Great Aunt Mabel's Will Reading
"I'm sorry. Can you say that again please? I think heard you wrong."
The solicitor smiled, as mother and father just looked on in shock. "Wade Richardson, it appears that Great Aunt Mabel Patterson has chosen to leave everything that she has to you.
"You apparently were the only one that was there for her. Not for what she could give you." He glanced at mother, then smiled as he looked at father. "You were also the only family member that visited her and antiques never went missing when you left."
"Pardon me?"
"There were number of times, that she found antiques missing from her rooms when family and friends had left for the day. When she went into hospital, she had to involve the police to recover her possessions. You see, the house had almost been emptied. Apparently, they thought she would not be coming home, so they just took everything. That was why, in the end, you were the only one to have a key to her house when she changed the locks."
"Mum? You swore on the bible that she gave you those jewels."
"Well, they would have come to me. Your father Daniel was her favorite nephew. He was her Pirate Dan."
"So was his father and his father before him, but they never stole from her! You stole her treasured rubies. When they went missing she called me to go over to her. She was in right state. Do you even know who gave them to her?"
"No, but I know what they're worth."
"Forget the fucking value! They were given to her by Arnold P Trenshaw! Her husband to be. They became engaged and were very much in love when World War 1 started and Arnold was called up. Before he left he gave her a gift to show how much he loved her. It was those rubies! Mum, he never came home. How could you be so heartless?"
"She...She recovered quickly."
"No father she put on a show. In the last two years, I've lived with her and driven to university every morning. I couldn't leave her alone. She was ninety-three and she was being attacked by the family that were supposed to love her. That she had done everything for! You were all, just waiting for her to die!"
Wade looked at his parents, "How could you do this to Aunt Mabel? I remember the wars she used to play with us when we were young. She played with you and your sisters too dad. Before you there was your father, the original Pirate Dan. How could you forget those times?"
Father looked at Wade, "Son, we all Grow up."
"Yes we do, even then she stepped in and paid for your study so that you could become a doctor. She paid for all of you...Aunt Sue, Uncle Paul, all your cousins. What is wrong with you all? Hell, when Uncle Paul came out as gay and Gramps threw him out, who took him in and looked after him?"
Mother looked down to the floor "Mabel saved his life."
"Exactly! When your father went bankrupt mother who paid all of his debts so that he wasn't humiliated? Who also paid for your wedding?"
Father slumped into a chair next to me. "Mabel did, even though they weren't her family"
"Dad, how did you pay for the doctor's surgery?"
"Well..."
"Who financed it? Who paid for the building, renovations and patient list?"
"Well..."
Mother looked the lawyer, "Mabel stepped in and paid for everything. She, even covered salary for a year until he was established. It must have been well over...Oh, what have we done Daniel?"
The solicitor asked, "What happened to you all? Everyone in your family has been helped by Great Aunt Mabel."
Mother looked up, "Yes, but when Bertie died he left her everything. She had so much money."
"Mother, she never faltered in giving it to any of you when you needed help. Even times when you used her good nature to just get a free hand out for your next holiday." Mom and Dad looked at Wade, "Oh, she knew you did it. Even though it hurt her terribly, she loved you. So she let you get away with it and turned a blind eye. Just like she did with everyone else."
The solicitor looked at mother, "Care to tell Wade what you and his father did on the 15th of last month."
She looked at him and wept. Wade answered for her, "Mother dressed in a copy of the black Victorian dress that Mabel always insisted on wearing and they went into the bank and withdrew £15,000. Aunt Mabel, even knew about that as the bank phoned her the next day. I drove her to the bank to view the cameras and identify who they were. She actually said to the police that she had asked them to do it, when she saw who it was."
Looking at mother, "Do you know who Bertie was? You know the one you say left her everything?"
"We were told he was an Uncle."
"Exactly, but who was he?"
She just looked at Wade as he said, "Lord Edward P Mortimer, third son of the Duke of Louth. Right to the end she protected those she loved. Bertie as she knew him, was the gay lover of her father Daniel W Patterson. She was his only daughter and when her father was ruined Bertie stepped in and purchased the house for the family as long as father and he could continue their affair in safety."
Father looked up, "I never knew."
"When she was sixteen her mother died and she was alone. So she went to their rooms and even though she found her father being buggered by his lover. Her words, not mine. She asked the men to be a family, with her. Years later her father died, but she continued to live with and look after Bertie. When he got sick, she was the one that nursed him until the day he died... By then, his whole family had died and he was the only Louth family member left, so he left her everything. It was quite a substantial amount, as he had liquidized the estate when it came to him.
"The time she invited them to be a family with her, was the time that Arnold was called up. Losing a mother and losing a lover so close to each other was not easy for a young Victorian lady. She needed her father's support, so she had to support him in return. She never recovered from losing Arnold, and was in mourning all of her life. Hence the black dress. She was a spinster, because she was always in love with Arnold."
Father asked, "Son, how do you know all of this?"
"Because, I was the only one that loved her for who she was and not what she could do for me father. You used to visit, but you never listened to her unless it was about you and what you wanted. You never even saw her in the street, even though you walked right past her several times. Hell, you never even saw me when I was with her.
"When was the last time you remember seeing her?"
"When she..."
"Pardon?
"When she loaned me £5000 for the business, that I needed."
"What did you do with it?"
Mother smiled, "Bought me a car."
"I know, because Mabel saw him. Peter and I were talking to the dealership owner with Mabel at the time, as she owned 25% of the business."
Mother looked up "Peter? Who is Peter?"
"Mother, she told me not to tell you because of how you would react. Peter is my partner and lover. We have been together since before I started university. We have been living with Mabel for two years now."
Father had gone red. "Partner? Peter, is you partner? You started university at seventeen, so you are telling me he has been your lover since then."
Wade looked at him. "No, I am telling you Peter has been my lover since we were in highschool. Mabel knew about us, as I knew she was the only one that I could tell about Peter."
"You're telling me that you are a dirty little poofter?"
He stood and was about to clobber me when the solicitor shouted to get his attention, "Mabel added an addendum to the will. It states that when you found out about Peter and Wade, if you were to strike or hurt him in any way we are to issue you with a writ and subpoena that states; her estate will sue you and all of your cousins for every penny that she has ever given to you. Believe you me we will follow this to the letter if you hurt either of the boys. If you leave and leave now, no action will be taken. Decide as police are in the office waiting, should they be needed."
Mother looked at the solicitor, "We're going. May I say one thing?"
Wade nodded, "Go on."
"Honey I knew about you and Peter when you were fourteen years old. I also knew that I could say nothing, as your father would have gone ballistic if I did." She looked at dad, "When Terry was kicked out by his parents who stepped in and saved your best friend's life?" she looked at the solicitor and smiled.
Dad looked at her and then Wade, but avoided looking at the solicitor. "Dad who was Terry?"
"Terry was my best friend. His parents found him naked in bed with a teacher fucking him and they nearly killed him. I called Mabel when he was turned up on our doorstep and she took him in. He lived with her until he died of. Well he isn't around anymore, but Mabel looked after him and his partner. Son I was wrong, but I am sorry I cannot have anything to do with you if..."
The solicitor was about to speak when mother stood. "Come on Daniel. The best man won in the end. None of us deserve a penny and I will return the rubies Wade." She looked at the solicitor, "Terry, I do not blame her for cutting us off." She looked at Wade, "I'd like to stay in touch son. I'd also like to meet my son in law to say sorry, because I saw who beat him that time when he ended up in hospital and I never did a thing. I'm sorry Terry..."
"We need time mum. Plus, you know where we'll be." They stood and walked out, leaving me and Peter's father my solicitor in the room.
"Terry, dad never even acknowledged you."
"Wade he knows Noel died and to him I died when he found out that I was gay. You heard what he was like with you and Peter. He also would never believe that it was just pancreatic cancer and nothing else that Noel died of. I was dead to him years ago. He's changed so much. When we were young I thought it would be him and me together, how wrong I was." He had a tear rolling down his face.
Terry smiled, "I can understand Mabel now." He looked at Wade, "We adopted Peter when Mabel asked us to step in to help her friend. It was Arnold's great-great-niece that needed help and we were able to be there for Mabel.
"You are a lucky boy; just like I was with Noel. We met when I was eleven and were together for 35 years." ____________________________________________________________________________
