"Hey, who's the new guy?"

As the swim team lined up across the edge of the pool, Dean made his thoughts known to his best friend, Juan Alvarez.

"Don't get your hopes up. We don't even know if he's gay," Juan perceived.

"Probably not. He doesn't look or act like it."

"Stereo-typing us again, are you, Dean?"

"No. Just saying."

The whole time Dean conversed with Juan, his attention remained keyed to the dark brown-haired sixteen year old, in the light green swimming suit.

"What're you looking at Savage?"

In the light of the school gymnasium, stepped a dark shadow; Jim Hart and his cronies.

"Nothing."

"Don't give me that crap. You're eyeing up the new kid."

"Am not."

There was something Jim Hart knew, that none of the others knew. While stripping off their shirts, he caught the new kid, Michael Malkovich, looking their way. With a gift, whether he used it for good or evil, Jim Hart could spot another gay guy `a mile away'. Unlike guys of Dean Savage's and Juan Alvarez's mild mannerisms, Michael stood up against guys like Jim Hart. Sure, Hart could take what he wanted by force, usually meaning a guy on his knees, servicing his cock, but it was more fun to plan some devious prank, tricking a guy, then pulling the rug out from under him.

"Tell you what I want you to do Dean," Jim proceeded to unravel his most recent, secret, hostile plan, "I want you to get to know this guy, Michael."

"That's his name?"

"Yeah," Jim spoke cunningly, weaving his subversive plot, "he's gay."

"Really? How do you know?" Dean asked, inquisitively.

"That's none of your business."

Acting like his best friend, pal, Jim Hart patted Dean on the back.

"Your business is to find out about him."

"What do you want to know?"

"No, you're not getting it, Savage. I want you to be more than a buddy to Michael."

Dean still wasn't getting it.

"We have to team up on the social studies project. I could ask him maybe?"

"Now you're talking sense."

"But I don't understand why, Jim?"

"You leave the rest to me."

"If you say so."

"Yeah. Think of it as a gesture of good will."

All the time listening, Juan thought an evil plan was being hatched. In his mindset, Jim Hart's outlook was to only produce an outcome of harm, devised by trickery. After speaking his mind, Jim Hart surrendered Dean's personage, leaving his head swelling.

"What does he want you to do?" Juan asked.

"Get to know the new kid. Michael," Dean nodded towards the far side of the pool.

"For something devious, no doubt."

"No, he was really concerned."

Juan imitated barfing, sticking his finger in his mouth, down his throat.

"Yeah, right."

"He wants me to offer Michael partnership in our social studies project."

"And you'll be partners with Jim Hart, doing his dirty work."

"Okay, look. I know anything Jim touches turns to evil, but what could hurt being friendly to the new guy. It doesn't seem like anything hurtful."

"What could hurt, is Jim Hart. Everybody knows it."

"Not this time. Besides, Jim says Michael is gay."

"Look, Dean. This is the way I see it. Take my advice or forget it and I'll never mention it again. Michael looks like the type that doesn't scare easily."

"So?"

"Probably Jim Hart couldn't get him to bend the way you do all the time."

"Heeeeey."

"It's true. Look at what he's asking... no... Telling you to do."

"He's not telling me. I `want' to get to know Michael."

"For him to `dick' you?"

"Juan, you're asking for it!"

"Yeah right. You're not the type, Dean, so back off."

Dean backed off.

"What were you saying, Juan?"

"Never mind. Do what you want!"

"Don't be mad at me. Juan?"

Dean called several times, but Juan lit out of there, diving into the pool, swimming the lane like an expert, to the deep end. Instead of flipping over, returning, he swam to the side exit and climbed out, avoiding Dean.

"Hey."

"What's up?" Juan returned the tall, dark-haired boy's greeting.

From the far side of the pool, Dean watched Juan talking to Michael. They shook hands. He couldn't make out what they said, but it was `friendly'. Suddenly the two looked over towards Dean, then away, still chatting. Next, Michael dove in the water and swam the distance of one lane. Placing both hands on the edge of the pool, he pressed down, hauling his body out of the water.

"Hey. I'm Michael Malcovich."

For sixteen, Michael looked kind of nice. A few of the guys, Dean noticed, started getting some hair on their bodies. Below Michael's navel some spikes of hair started to form. The water made them look darker against his white skin. The pool water against the light breeze of the room made Michael's nips shrivel up.

"Dean... Savage."

Michael cut right to the point, "I saw you talking with Jim Hart and his goons."

"Jim's a friend of mine," Dean lied.

"Oh, okay. Poor choice, but it's your's. See ya!"

Michael dove into the pool, swimming on Juan's course. Dean hated saying what he said. If anything, he could be considered Hart's number one enemy. He hated everything Hart stood for. Now he lost his chance to connect with Michael, by choosing the wrong words.
