"Wow! This is `ver-y' nice!"
Alex made light of the walk-off elevator, taking himself and Chad right inside the spacious apartment dwelling, "Yeah. Thanks."
No sooner had they made landing, from one of the other rooms, Michael walks in. "Hi guys. Want some ice cream?" Scotty was right behind them, offering up the same greeting and delectable delight.
"Um, guys, we have company?" Alex reminds them of walking around with only their loins covered.
"It's okay," Chad replies. "Jake and I do..." It's then he realizes his relationship with Jake is over and done with. "What I meant to say is we used to... um do the same, so it doesn't bother me."
"Cool!" Michael responds.
He heads off towards the `family theater' portion of the lux floorplan, Scotty inviting, "If you guys want, bring your ice cream in and watch with us."
Scotty wanted to stay and chat, but Michael was calling, "C'mon Scotty, it's started!"
In the kitchen the two remove their hoodies, Alex instructing, "Oh just throw it over the chair. Now," as he peers into the freezer compartment, "Those two left us with a great selection. Would you like to have vanilla, vanilla or vanilla?"
With his eyes on Alex, Chad chooses, "If it's all the same to you I'll have vanilla?"
"Here!" he sticks his hand out with the carton, almost bowling Chad over. "Oh sorry! I didn't know you were standing there!"
"My fault," Chad replies. And it was. If he hadn't been right near the fridge checking out Alex as Alex was checking out the ice cream availability, this would not have occured.
For Alex, he stood there for a moment, just staring.
Chad had to remind him, "You better close the door before your veggies unfreeze?"
"Oh yeah," Alex interrupted his own train of thought.
Knowing, Chad asks, "Do I really resemble Kyle?"
"From what I can see, yes," Alex replies as he looks for a scoop in the draw.
"I think that's it in the sink," Chad tells him.
"Oh yeah," Alex replies. "Thanks."
Instead of the theater with Michael and Scotty, the two park themselves in the diningroom.
"I never ate at a table for more then four people!" Chad says of the table which seats twelve or more.
Alex interjects, "Oh, so there were four of you growing up?"
"Yes," Chad tells some family history, "but not in the way you are thinking it. My mom was single for most of her child-rearing years, bringing us children up single-handedly."
"So who was the fourth seat at the table?"
"Our older brother, Gregg. He lives out in Cali with his family. We don't get to see him much. Once a year around Christmas he will fly in to see Peter and mom."
"And not you?" Alex asks as he licks off the back of his spoon.
"Sure. Me too, but he's not exactly peachy-keen with me being gay, if you know what I mean?"
"Oh, so you and Gregg don't hit it off when he's in town?"
"I drive mom's car and pick him up at the airport. But believe me, it's a lonely trip unless mom is along for the ride, so I make sure she is always available," Chad replies, finishing the last of his vanilla mush.
Alex asks, "And your mom? How does she take your being gay?"
"Oh she's fine with it. Like Peter, they could care less. It's only Gregg, which I'm surprised because mom brought us up to always accept peoples and their differences."
Alex sits back, then stands, picking up his dish, "Well you never know what the forces might be which keeps a person from acceptance."
"True," Chad follows Alex's lead.
When they hit the kitchen, Alex asks, "Want some more?"
"Nah. But thanks. It was good."
The two made light work of the two dishes and accompanying spoons, putting them in the dishwasher. Then they stood there with little to say and nothing to do.
"Want to join Scotty and Michael?"
"Sure," Chad replied, anxious to have Alex `not' ask him to leave.
The double doors were closed so Alex knocked, entering and asking, "May we come in?"
"Oh hi Alex!" Michael called out.
"Alex?" Scotty asks in a fog, apparently waking up.
"Chad and I thought..."
The two waited by the door on account of looking over the back of the sofa, it became obvious the two had removed their briefs. Scotty, upon awkening had slid his bod off of Michael and stood. "Oops!" was his reply as he held one hand over `most' of his crotch.
"It's okay guys," Chad makes light of the situation, "remember I'm a guy too?"
In a playful mood, when Scotty picks up Michael's cock-sock briefs, the one being passed around the house lately, Michael steals it out of lover's hand, leaving his pubes exposed again. "That's mine!"
"If you want to get technical," he steals it back, "it really belongs to Alex!"
The slapstick continued, Chad saying, "Just like Gregg used to do, steal my briefs when mom hadn't done enough laundry."
"Oh well this is a `special' pair."
Hearing it from Alex, Michael, the devilous of the pair states, "Yeah, notice the place for a guy's cock and the roomy `underneath' in case he's got big balls?"
Chad couldn't help but laugh at Michael's salespitch description.
In serious thought, Alex couldn't get over how much Chad not only resembled Kyle, but the laugh seemed to match the perfect sounding tone.
"What? Did I say something wrong?" Chad asks, when he finds Alex staring at him.
"No. Um, not a thing. Look, I'm not much in the mood for a movie. Why don't you hang here with Michael and Scotty?"
It came back to Chad, about distancing himself from Jake and he was very much obliged for the offering, "Thanks." And he put it, "But if I fall asleep I hope you don't mind me staying the night?"
"Not a problem," Alex put it. He also left with, "Um Michael?"
"What?" Michael inquires as he and Scotty prepare a place on the eight-seater sofa for Chad.
"Be nice. Remember Chad is a guest?"
"No problem," Michael replies. "Don't worry. By morning it'll be like he's a fixture like the rest of us!"
"That's what I'm afraid of!"
He left in good humor, but as Alex began climbing the stairs to the loft, suddenly he changed course and retreated downstairs. He heard some noise from the room off of the diningroom and decided to check up on Darryl. "You okay?" he asked, walking in.
"He's just fine," Colton, Darryl Weismantle's nurse replies.
"He's sleeping?"
"Yes. He's been in quite a bit of pain today, but I see improvement over yesterday, Alex."
"Great," Alex replied. And after closing the door and leaving Colton to his book, he paced the length of the diningroom. Without Kyle there things seemed boring. He knew he would not be at peace in the bedroom, but did go upstairs one more time, with a goal in mind. Stripping down he decided to get today's grit off. On his way to the private jon, he stopped at his dresser. Across the top were a lifetime of memories, his family, group and solo pictures, then pictures of Kyle, one of him as a blond bundle after birth, then more blond pictures of various ages. He glanced across the room and saw the duplicate, only himself across Kyle's dresser. He stopped at the last pic, one of the two of them, taken by Carlos Guerra, his recital at Manhattan School of Music. He smiled, thinking it was the only time he's seen Kyle in a tie and dress shirt. A melancholy moment came over Alex and he held the picture to his barechest, breathing in deeply, his head
tilted back, eyes closed. For one short moment he could have sworn he was holding Kyle. And when he opened his eyes he found himself misty, sniffling, wiping an eye with the side of an index finger. Right then and there he knew how he was going to spend his night. The shower lasted about a minute and a half before Alex was in, out, toweled off and back in the bedroom searching for some late night clothing. He transferred his wallet from pants to pants, sat on the bed to tie the laces of his sneakers, picked out a fresh hoodie and exited the loft.
On the way down he decided to make his intentions known and interrupted the `theater-goers'. "Hey guys, I'm go...ing... out?" he said, stealing a quick glance to the oversized wall Tv, the steamy scene of a porno flick. A small smile adorned his face, looking at the sofa, Michael keeled over on Scotty, Chad lying with his foot very near Michael's crotch, his shirt stripped. He wondered if it was on his own volition or a product of Michael's doing to get Chad to remove his clothes. For a moment it created a diversion, but five seconds later Alex was back on track, wrote out a post-it note and stuck it on the screen of the Tv. He did get a little giggle out of putting it over one of the guy's crotches. Right before he cut the screen off.
"Everything copasetic?" Ellis asked Alex on the way out of the lobby.
"Fine. I couldn't sleep so I thought I would head on over to the hospital early."
Ellis replies, "They might give you a hard time, unless you want to give Uncle Swifty a jingle?"
"I could," Alex replied, not really wanting to disturb him.
"He's a Geoff's place. You have the number?"
"Maybe," Alex said, flipping his cell open. This last day and a half he wasn't sure which way was up, let alone if he had Geoff Kenyon's phone number stashed away in his cell phonebook. "Got it!" he assured Ellis.
Alex didn't make the call, relying on his own to get in to see Kyle after visiting hours. Strange thing though, when he reached the hospital an orderly was there to greet him at the door.
"Mr. Nouguet?"
"Um, that's me. And you are?" Alex asked, skeptical of how somebody knew he was on his way. Taller than himself, the guy had to be at least six feet, over five inches tall.
"Nice to meet you. You can call me Dex or Dexter, but if you even try Poindexter I'm gonna have to squash you with my thumb!"
"I bet you can do it!" Alex replied after a short giggle. For whatever reason, call it karma, but getting inside the hospital and the way paved to Kyle's room gave him a sense of inner peace.
Only obstacle they ran into was this chubby security guard who stood about half Dexter's size. "You know visiting hours are way over, Dex?"
Alex felt the need to giggle again as Dex says to him, "George do I have to lock you in the closet again?"
George walked with them, him telling Dex how humiliated he was when the day nurse opened it in the morning, finding him sleeping on a pile of linens. "She gave me hell y'know?"
"Really George? Not the way I hear it. I heard she locked the door behind her and gave you more than hell!"
His joy calmed when they reached Kyle's door, Alex trying the knob, said, "Thanks very much Dex."
"No problem. A friend of Swifty's is a friend of mine!"
Then George takes Dex's thumb in his hand and relays to Alex, "See this thumb here? You never want to call Dex here by his real name."
Dex looks down at George, who is bustin' to say it.
"'Poindexter'?"
Alex just shook his head as he heard George scream like a girl, Dex chasing him down the hallway, giving him hell, "I'm gonna whip that lily-white ass o'yours Georgie!"
They could have woken everyone in the wing, but when Alex entered Kyle's room he was sleeping like an angel, the different colored lights from the monitors creating an aura of a heavenly place, a central light gleaming down from above his head.
