"For Sale By Owner" 18 wriTten by T. Chase McPhee

"I have a thought Kyle."
"What's up?"
"I know this is sudden, but do you think we could get on the road before Knapp awakens?"
"Sure. I think it's a wise choice. Why should we have to be the ones to go through his interrogation when he wakes up. C'mon."
Going downstairs to Kyle's quarters, he pulls out a sportsbag, stuffing briefs and other clothing inside.
"You're packing like you won't be back for a week."
"Well, in lieu of what's happened I think I'll stay away til next weekend."
"Knapp will want you back here, no?"
"Nah. Weekdays don't have the draw weekends do, so I won't be missed much. Besides, he doesn't own me!"
Alex had only his tux to carry, plus his bag of shoes and socks, so he slung over his shoulder one of Kyle's sportsbags.
"Be careful of the gifts," Kyle cautioned, loading the jeep.
"You know, I almost forgot about them. My brothers and sisters are going to be so surprised!"
"Don't forget your mom."
"I don't know about those earrings. I don't think she's had anything as nice as a pair of diamond studded earrings."
"I have a confession to make," Kyle surrenders.
"They're not diamonds?"
"Oh, they're diamonds alright. I hope you're not mad at me when I tell you... I also bought the necklace, to match."
"You what? I don't have that kind of money to pay you back, Kyle!"
"Chill, Alex. It's like I've said. I would have bought something like this for my mom, but instead I'm buying it for your's."
"Still..." Alex gave up with a huff, "oh alright, but I think it's too much."
"Will `she' think it's too much?"
"Does the Pope read the Bible?"
"Well it's too late now, to take it back. It's all wrapped up as one package."
"What am I going to do with you? Next time you buy something, you are to tell me right out!"
"Then how can I surprise you for your birthday? Hey, when is it?"
"I'm not telling."
"Okay, well before I swear never to buy you anything in secret, I wanted you to have this."
Reaching over in front of Alex, Kyle pulls a silver box out of the glove compartment.
"What's this?"
"Something small I bought for you.... in case we hit it off?"
"Kyle."
"I know and after this I promise not to buy something unless you know about it," and he mumbled, "and unless it's your birthday."
"What was that?"
"Nothing," Kyle said. "Now open it."
"But it's not my birthday."
"Just open it?"
"Alright," Alex broke down.
Undoing the matching silver bow, he slipped the ribbon from the box. He then lifted the lid.
"Oooooh Kyle. This is too, too much!"
"C'mon," Kyle said, when Alex went to recover the box, fighting to put the lid back on.
"But this is too much. I hardly know you."
"Answer me one question, Alex."
"What?"
"Is there anybody else you feel more close to at this moment?"
"My mom?"
"She's not here."
"Oh, so this is a trick question?" Alex tried conveying.
"No, not at all. Listen, just wear it."
"Oh alright."
Taking it from the box, Kyle shimmied around in his seat of his jeep so he could place the silver chain around Alex's neck. As he snagged it in the back, he gave Alex a sweet kiss, withdrawing to his own seat.
"It looks real nice."
"Especially with this Abercrombie tee shirt."
"The silver looks great against your chest hair."
Pulling the top of the tee shirt, Alex looks inside.
"Kind of buries it, don't you think?"
"I'll know it's there. Do you like it?"
Alex learned to accept it, saying, "I love it and I love you!"
They kissed deeply.
"Now, how do we get to your place?"
"I haven't any idea. We came in a limo, remember, dah?"
"What's your address? I'll pop it into the GPS."
"24 Orchard Terrace, Lake Quinn."
"Hmm.. I think Dominic said something like route 280. We'll take the Garden State up to 280 and that'll lead us to 80. When we hit the border, we'll do some fine tuning on the GPS."
"Oh, I'll know the way once we cross over into `my territory'."
"Cool!"
After an hour on the road, they pulled off one of the exits, right before the foot of the Driscoll Bridge.
"I'm starving!" Kyle announced, "You?"
"A little. I have to more take a whiz. Hey, will you look at that?"
"The Colosseum. Yeah. I've heard of it. A nice gay nightclub."
"As nice as Eden?" Alex asks.
"I don't know. Too bad it's not night time."
"Maybe we can stop by on the way back?"
"Who knows what the weekend will bring."
"Well, nothing much exciting happens in Lake Quinn."
"Except swim competitions, huh?"
"It's on Wednesday, though we might try Devon's favorite club."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Mr. Pinque's."
"Have you been there?"
"Once."
All whizzed out and fed, the two set back on the parkway.
"So, what happened?" Kyle asked, catching some bad vibes about Alex's experience.
"This guy got kind of fresh. I didn't like the way he acted. Then he tried doing dirty stuff I didn't like."
"Sounds nasty. They should throw him out."
"What I thought, but Devon says he was the owner's son."
"It's still no excuse to behave like a slut!"
Alex laughed, saying, "True."
"So what happened?"
"I left and the nerd had enough nerve to follow me."
"He stalked you?"
"No. He stood behind my car and... well, I didn't think `I' had enough nerve, but I started to back up."
"No way. You didn't...."
"Nah. He got the hint real quick and jumped out of the way. Yet, Devon tells me later Kevin..."
"Kevin?"
"Hey I just remembered something."
"What?" Kyle questions.
"His name is Kevin Norris!"
"The same as my cop friend, from Asbury!"
"Yep. I didn't get the connection at the time, but that's it."
"Wait til I tell Kevin... my Kevin, that is."
"Well, be prepared, if you want to go to Mr. Pinque's, you might be running into him."
"Oh, I'm counting on it... let your Kevin Norris try getting fresh with `this boy'!"
In ninety minutes time, they had reached the turn off for Route 280.
"Don't miss it now.... it's right here... whew!"
"You're a real worry-wart, you know that Alex?"
Alex just smiled back.
"Guess what?"
"Um, you've got to piss again?"
"Worse... I'm hungry!"
"It looks a little congested around here. Let's wait til we get into the country?"
"Okay."
The hunger pangs really started beating like a drum, inside Alex's stomach.
"I just wanted to let you know that now I'm `very' hungry."
Kyle laughed, pulling off at the Livingston exit. They made a right hand turn down the road, onto Route 10. >From there they pulled into the local Burger Chef. They both ordered a #2, Alex with a chocolate shake, Kyle, vanilla. They sat outdoors, at an umbrella table.
"Pretty nice here."
"I thought with the traffic, we would get a lot of fumes, but no."
With his burger in his hands, elbows leaning on the table, Kyle took a bite, but also looked straight ahead.
"So, do you still like it?"
"What? The Abercrombie shirt?"
"You know what I mean!"
Alex cracked up. Wiping his hands on a napkin, he picked the shirt up and took it off, right over his head."
"Good idea," Kyle followed through, after putting his burger down. Then he commented, "I knew it would look good on your hairy chest."
"What's this big thing about my hairy chest?"
"I dunno. Maybe I like hairy guys," Kyle said with a smile.
"Well, that's one thing I should be thankful for! The other thing is this chain. I really like it, Kyle."
"Wouldn't it look nice with a ring hanging from it?"
"Kyle! I can't afford stuff like that."
"I can."
"I know you can, but you don't have to keep buying me stuff to show you love me."
"Tell you what," Kyle picks up his burger, "when we get the rings, we'll both pick them out and you can pay half."
"And they don't have to be expensive rings from places like Braddocks."
"Yeah. Okay. We'll pick a nice little jewelry store in Lake Quinn."
"I think it closed. You see, Lake Quinn is not a real `happening' town."
"No? What's it's main industry?"
"The fruit juice packaging plant, I think?"
"Fruit juice?"
"Yeah, you know. The little brick packs kids throw in their lunch boxes? My mom has been getting them in bulk since I was a little kid, real cheap."
"Tell me more about your family."
"There's not much to tell. There's three girls, Kimberly, Anne and Sue and four boys, Bob, Bill, Mike and Joey's in Iraq."
"I don't think I'll be able to remember all their names. By the way, how are they on handling me as your boyfriend?"
"First of all, I wasn't sure how they were going to handle Greg and I going to the senior prom. I guess mom was the most shocked, but you know what?"
"What?"
"She said she didn't care and I guess the rest followed mom in saying they still loved me, because she has always been that type of good role model for us."
"Cool."
"Speaking of cool, we better get our shirts on and get on the road."
"Yeah. Looks like we could see some rain.... oh but don't look now."
"Look? Where?"
"Some guy is checking us out."
"Where?" Alex asks again.
"The guy at the pick up window."
Alex smiles, fluttering his eyebrows, deviously turning his head slowly. Out of the corner of his eye, he picks up on the action.
"Oh yeah."
"Hey, I got an idea."
"What are you up to, now, Kyle?"
"Leave our shirts off. Get in the jeep and we'll drive by the window and order a coupla more shakes."
"Oh, you're cruel!"
"Yeah, right?"
So, Alex does as Kyle asks, leaves his shirt off. They get in the jeep, do a u-turn and head in the direction of the pick-up ledge.
"Um, may I please have two shakes?"
The clerk, not more than seventeen or eighteen asks, "Chocolate or Vanilla?"
"Do you have strawberry?" Kyle asks, making their lingering time longer.
"No, sir. Only Ch-chocolate or Vanilla. Um, nice `S' you got there."
"'S'? Oh yeah, I forgot."
Even though some of the hair has grown back, about an eighth of an inch, the `S' is still indelible, carved out of Alex's chest.
"So, how did you... did you do it yourself?"
"Private joke, actually and yes, I did it myself."
"Looks nice. So does the chain."
Something inside strikes Kyle as this guy being a nice guy'. He doesn't normally go around picking up burger chefs', but this guy seems different and since there's nobody behind them, in line, why not go for it!
"This here is Alex and I'm Kyle."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Tom."
Just then, the boss comes over to the window, one of those constant critic type of bullies.
"Something wrong with the food, Ladner?"
"No, sir," Tom tells him.
Right away, the guy irks Kyle the wrong way.
"The shakes are really good. That's why we came back for more and the service is super."
"Hmm.." is all the boss said, wandering off.
"Thanks guys, but I don't think it'll help. Chuck takes every moment he can to put me down. Y'see, I'm the youngest here, only seventeen and I think he's trying to get enough on me to get rid of me."
"Then why did he hire you."
"He didn't. The manager left and he was hired to take his place."
"We feel for ya, Tom," Alex leans in to tell him.
"Really nice chain, Alex!" Tom reiterates, telling the two he's still checking out Alex's bod.
"Thanks."
"Someday I'm going to earn enough money to get myself one. After I pay for college."
It's then they looked into the guts of the Burger Chef, to see the boss writing some stuff down.
"Where are you going to college?"
"I don't know yet. I don't even know if I'll have enough money. Know what I mean?"
"Well we better get going. Alex here gets mighty hungry. Why don't you give us another burger."
"Sure. No problem," Tom rings them up.
"Got an email address?"
"Yup."
"Why don't you write it on the bag? That is if you want to keep in contact."
"Yeah. That'd be cool," Tom says.
They get the burger, along with an email address, written on the outside of a bag, with the name, `Tom Ladner'.
"Take it easy Tom."
"Hey, where are you guys from?"
"Alex is from Lake Quinn and I live in New York City, but work sometimes in Asbury Park."
"Cool!" Tom says.
After they leave, they get back on Route 10.
"I think we're going the wrong way."
"The GPS says we can pick up 287 and that'll take us to Route 80."
"Okay. I know Route 80. That'll take us into the gap."
"What gap?"
"Delaware Water Gap Rec Area. There's a real nice view there. We should stop."
"And get romantic?"
"It's kind of wide and open."
"Oh. I thought maybe there could be a secluded picnic table to stretch you out on and make love to you!"
"Cut it out. You're making me hard, Kyle!"
