Fly Me Away 01
Danny
Walking out of class was by far the most triumphant feat I've had all week. Knowing that the highest score on the hardest test of the year-or so Miss Sheeba said-was mine, well, it just did something to me. It sent like a shock right through me.
There in the parking lot sat my mom in her car. She wasn't paying attention to what was going on around her. Her attention was focused on a book she has been reading for quite a while now. I guess when you have a retard son your priorities change.
"Hi, m-mom," I said nonchalantly as I got in the car. I set my backpack down on the floor and handed her my test.
She looked at the top of the page at the huge circled one hundred percent. "Honey, you aced it! That's great!" She leaned over and grabbed me in a hug.
"Y-yeah, I really d-d-did." I chuckled. Mom always got super excited when I would bring home A's. That's actually all that I brought home. Ever since the end of middle school, A's could always be found on my report cards. Guess those doctors who spend years and years getting their degrees aren't as smart as everyone thinks.
"Well, this calls for some ice cream then. What do you feel like?" We started to pull out of the school parking lot.
"Actually, I-I don't f-feel like going out. C-can we just g-get some bubblegum ice cream from a l-l-liquor store?"
Mom smiled. "Sure, honey. I just need to drop a package off at the UPS Store real quick, but then we'll go, okay?"
"Okay,"
The UPS Store wasn't too far from a liquor store. I watched mom in the store, though, and she got on the phone with somebody. That isn't breaking news or anything, but she seemed to be very secretive about it. Once she got off the phone, she then stood in line to ship her package. When she came back to the car, a huge grin was plastered on her face.
At the liquor store, she went inside to get my bubblegum ice cream. I lost sight of her after that, though.
She searched around in the freezer for a tub of the bubblegum ice cream, but was coming up short. They seemed to just be out of stock. She walked up to the register to ask the clerk to get her some.
"Excuse me, could you go in the back and get me a thing of your bubblegum ice cream. I would really appreciate it." she said to the clerk politely. She believed that politeness would benefit her in most situations.
"I'm sorry, but I can't leave the reg. If you could wait like fifteen minutes, the stocker can get you some."
"I don't have fifteen minutes to wait. Please, can't you just run back and get me a tub real quick? It can't be that big of a deal."
"Sorry, lady, but I can't." the clerk said. "Now, if you don't mind..."
A customer behind her started to move forward, but she turned around and glared at her. "My son wants bubblegum ice cream. All his life has been filled with disappointment after disappointment. Do you know what that does to me? How that makes me feel? To know that I am responsible for his pain? Well, not today. For once, he is going to get exactly what he wants. Now, I'm not asking you I'm telling you. Go and get my son the frickin' bubblegum ice cream!" She slammed her hands on the counter causing the clerk to jump and then run away into the back.
The few customers standing in line took a step away from her. She turned around to look at them, but at that moment, the clerk came running back to the register with a tub of bubblegum ice cream. "That'll be three dollars."
She tossed a five on the counter and said, "Keep the change."
Mom handed me the tub of ice cream when she got back in the car. She appeared to be a little irritated, but I couldn't imagine why. Her driving was a bit more aggressive as well. In fact, we got home faster than we normally would have.
"Mom, are y-you okay?" I asked her as the two of us entered the house.
"Of course, I'm fine." she replied in her usual happy tone. She also took the ice cream from my hands. "Now, I am going to start dinner so you go on up to your room and do what ever homework you have."
"Sure, m-mom, but what's f-for dinner?"
"That's for me to know and you to find out."
I went upstairs to my room and began my homework. My parents are pretty well off so the size of our house is larger than average. Mom works as a dental hygienist, which explains my exceptionally straight, white teeth. Dad on the other hand is a real estate broker, which can also explain our large house.
Being it's already Thursday, my teachers didn't give out a lot of homework. So, within an hour I finished what little I had. Dinner probably wouldn't be ready for at least another hour and with my homework finished, I figured I should maybe study a little bit.
"Danny, dinner is ready!" mom said through the intercom right next to my bed. I closed my math book and headed out of my room. Dad was standing next to mom by the front door when I cleared the stairs.
"Um, w-what's up?" I asked. The two of them were just standing in front of the door staring at me.
"Congrats on your A, sport." dad said happily. "Mom called me at work and told me all about it."
"And the two of us remembered how much you wanted a Labrador for Christmas last year." mom cut in. My excitement began to grow drastically. If they were saying what I think they're saying, then that means...
"So, go look in the backyard." dad finished.
I ran to the back door and looked out the window. There in the yard was a black dog running around sniffing its environment. The dog was shiny and bursting with energy. I opened the door and walked out cautiously. The dog stopped sniffing and raised its head to me.
"C-c-come here, b-boy." I said nervously. Although I've always wanted a dog, I'm not sure what to expect now that I actually have one.
The dog slowly made its way closer to me. He was definitely as nervous as I was. I stuck my hand out for him to sniff. And sniff he did. We looked into each other's eyes, waiting for the other to make a move. Obviously, I was the one to make a move.
With every bit of caution, I moved my hand from in front of his nose to his upper back. He calmed down even more than I did as I started to rub him.
"Seems like you two need some time together." dad said humorously.
"I c-can't believe you guys g-g-got me a dog!" I excitedly said.
"He's already been trained in a lot of ways. The only thing you really need to do right now is name him." dad stated.
"Hmm, I'll h-have to think of a g-g-good name."
The three of us went inside.
Brandon
My dad forced me out of the house and ordered me to drive around town in order to become more familiar with the area. The idea of having to drive around an unfamiliar city may seem kind of interesting to a certain extent, but to someone like me it is really lame.
Driving through the downtown area, I took note of all the little shops and food places that I can visit when I get some down time. The more I drove around the more I realized that I might actually begin to like living here.
Dad and I moved to this town for one reason: work. His work to be specific. When the idea of moving first came about, I wasn't against it at all. There were some people back home that I could not stand so moving was a great way to get rid of that drama. My second ex-boyfriend would constantly try to win me back, but he cheated on me, and I will no longer have any more of that bullshit going on.
As I drove back home, I saw a really cute guy walking his dog. He looked to be about five-ten, maybe a hundred and forty pounds with medium length brown hair and a nice even tan. The guy definitely has some fashion sense wearing Hollister and all. I can only hope the he goes to the high school where I'll be going. Speaking of school, can you believe I have to start tomorrow? On a Friday nonetheless!
When I pulled back in the driveway, dad was unloading what was left in his truck. He gave me a weird look when I got out of my car, but I just ignored it and went inside to my room.
You know, when I first realized that being gay wouldn't be so bad, that decision was made on my own. If my dad ever finds out that I am gay, it'll be the end of me. In return, that creates an astonishing amount of pressure on my part to play the role of a perfectly straight son. It sucks having to lie to him, but I have no choice. Someday I plan on telling him, but that won't be until I have found the right person to do that with. I may be tough on the inside, and the out, but I think when I have my coming out day, I'll need some mega reassurance in my life.
Most everything in my room I have already unpacked so there really wasn't much for me to do except organize everything. With all my clothes already in the closest and in dresser drawers, organizing would be quicker than I had imagined. I'm a very simple person when it comes to personal things. I have a bed, a desk and a chair, a dresser, and a TV stand. Those are the biggest things in my room. Then there are the smaller type things such as a DVD rack, CD rack, lamp for my desk, my laptop, and a small fan.
The simple things in life excite me. When it comes to having a boyfriend, he must be a simple guy. I honestly cannot deal with complex people. They seem to just wear a sign that says "I'm complicated, Brandon, stay the hell away." No matter how hot the guy is or how much we click, he has to be simple. The complex things are done in my life. From now on, I want nothing but simplicity.
"Brandon, get out here!" dad shouted from the living room. Well, so much organizing my room.
"Yeah, dad?" I asked as I walked out of the hallway.
"What do you want for dinner?" he questioned.
"A burger is fine," I replied.
He tossed me his credit card. "Great, go get us some food."
I groaned on the inside. He's always doing this to me. Let me put it in a way that you'll understand faster. Mine and my dad's relationship is kind of strained. If you were over at our house and you happened to come in contact with the man that was rarely here anyways, you'd want to leave faster than you came. He has this intimidating aura about him. It's not that he's a scary guy, but the way he acts could be misinterpreted as threatening. Anyways, ever since I was little he's always been letting me down.
After getting our dinner, we ate in separate rooms saying nothing to each other. The time flew by and before I knew it, it was already nine o'clock. With my room the way that I wanted it, I felt at ease enough to fall asleep.
The next morning I woke up with a sick feeling in my stomach. Don't know what it is, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's my nerves. Being the first day of school, I'm not sure what to expect. Once I showered and got ready, I went into the kitchen for a quick breakfast. Dad of course wasn't home. He is already at work and will be there probably until either late tonight or early tomorrow.
The high school was filled with students by the time I arrived. I already got my schedule a couple of days ago when my dad registered me so luckily I don't have to go to the office or anything. Off in the distance, one of apparently three bells rang. The first bell is a warning bell to get to class. Then there is a two-minute bell. And the final bell signals the beginning of class.
This is it.
I grabbed my backpack from the backseat and started towards my new life. All the kids around me just kind of gave a curious look. Am I wearing a sign that says new kid or something?
First period for me is American Government. Back at my old high school, I was given a tutor because I did so lousy in the class. More likely than not I'll need another tutor. I walked into the classroom just as the teacher was starting up an overhead projector. And as luck would have it, I was the first person to enter.
"What can I do for you, honey?" the large black woman said. I could immediately tell she's a woman you don't want to screw with.
"Um, I'm new here. I have your class right now." I said nervously. The moment of truth is being lived right now.
"Well, welcome, I am Miss Sheeba." she said nicely, but then said more seriously. "I only have one rule. You give me attitude, I give you an F. Is that clear?"
"Yes, ma'am," I smiled. "I'm Brandon by the way." For some unknown reason, my nerves were just suddenly calmed.
"Okay then," she smiled. "This here is the only open seat." Miss Sheeba pointed to the second seat in the first row. Just then, another student walked in. "Morning, Danny."
I recognized him immediately as the guy I saw walking his dog yesterday. So, his name is Danny. That name definitely suits him seeing as how cute he is. God must be looking down upon me and saying something like, 'He's gonna have himself a good day.'
"G-good morning, M-Miss Sheeba." he stuttered out.
What's with the stutter?
Several more students began to file into class each taking their respective seats throughout the room. The two-minute bell rang followed with the rest of the class I'm assuming. The final bell went off and everyone just erupted in chatter. A ping went off and I looked around for what it was.
"Happy Friday," a voice boomed. I looked up and found where the voice was coming from. There's a speaker mounted in the ceiling. "I am Mr. Yale, the principal at this fine school. I introduce myself today only because we have a new student with us, but I'll spare him the embarrassment. Now for your morning announcement."
Even though he didn't say my name, the entire class looked directly at me.
Miss Sheeba spoke, "Mhm, for all ya'll talkers up in here, it's time to keep it down right now." The classroom went silent upon hearing her speak.
"Not too much on the school front until the end of next week when we'll have our fall dance. Remember that tickets will continue to be on sale until next Friday's lunch. There will be no tickets sold at the event. In my hand is an envelope. And in this envelope is the result of the poll that has been active for the past week. Today I will be releasing where the dance will be held." Everyone could hear him rip open the envelope. "There were three choices: the gym, the football field, or the University's football field." Paper could be heard being unfolded. "And the winner is-big surprise-the University's football field!" A victorious song was played through the loudspeaker. All the kids in the class were cheering. Everyone, that is, except Danny. He was just slouched in his seat.
The principal gave more details about the dance like what to wear and the time it started. Miss Sheeba went straight into teaching after Mr. Yale was finished speaking. Throughout the course of the class, I instantly knew I will definitely be needing a tutor to help me through this crap.
"Since ya'll have been so well behaved today, I'll give an extra credit question." Miss Sheeba said. "Who can tell me what the thirteenth amendment is and when it was put into act?" The only person to raise their hand, almost immediately after the question was asked, was Danny. "Yes, Danny?"
"The thirteenth a-amendment abolished slavery a-and authorized C-C-Congress to enforce s-slavery. I-it was created in 1865." Danny said in a quiet tone.
Miss Sheeba smiled. "Perfect, Danny."
The bell rang and all the students quickly exited the classroom. I stayed behind so that I could talk to Miss Sheeba about getting a tutor. Danny was still in the room, but I didn't mind.
"Miss Sheeba, I was wondering if I could talk to you about something?" nervously I asked her.
"Sure, uh, Brandon, right?"
"Yeah," I said. "Well, at my old school I had some trouble with government so I was wondering if you could, um, set me up with a tutor. Or tell me who I could talk to about hiring one."
She seemed to think deeply for a moment before replying. "My best student is right behind you." I turned around and stared at Danny. He stopped what he was doing and looked back. His demeanor suddenly changed and turned frightful. "Danny, would you mind helping Brandon out?"
Danny just stared at me, like he was trying to figure me out or something. I gave him a sympathetic look and a shrug of my shoulders.
"I-I-I guess I c-could," he stuttered.
Yep, God definitely is making sure I'm gonna have a good day.
"Great, well, you two talk and figure out dates and times and such." Miss Sheeba happily said. "Now get goin' to class."
Who knows what I'm getting myself into with Danny. If he starts to tutor me, it'll continually become harder and harder not to touch him. I'm sure he's not gay. I mean, it seems to me like he's kind of... Well, to put it bluntly, mentally slow. But that can't be right, right? He answered Miss Sheeba's question almost immediately after she asked it. Maybe he's just a really nervous person. And even if he is gay, Danny seems to be a very complicated person. I'm not into that.
The two of us walked side by side for a few seconds before I broke the silence that had consumed us. "So, when and where do you want to help me?"
"I-I don't know," he replied. Gosh, I can't be that intimidating at all. He looks so scared. Maybe this isn't such a good idea.
"Well, I'm free all day every day until I find a job. I know it's Friday and all, but would you care to start this afternoon?"
He stopped walking and looked up at me. The awkwardness was just surrounding us. Danny seems to be thinking rather hard about something. It could be that he doesn't trust me. I guess I can see why. I mean, I'm new here and all of a sudden I'm trying to get him to tutor me. If it were me in his shoes, I'd probably be nervous as well. Although, if someone as hot as me were to come up and ask to tutor him, then I'd jump on that train mega fast. Conceited much...
"N-no, today is f-fine." he softly spoke.
"Great," I grinned. "So, where do you live? I'll swing by around four."
Danny
Mom wanted to know what was wrong with me when we got home. I'd been too quiet even for me. Honestly, I don't know what's bothering me. That's a lie. It's Brandon. The time is near for him to be at my house so I can tutor him. Ever since I left school, it's been bugging me. A quick FYI: I only have four periods so I can leave at lunch. Hopefully he isn't like all the other jerks in school. The ones who constantly pick at me, making fun of my stutter. I can feel their stares on me all day long. The quiet chatter can be heard about the 'retard kid' that goes all around school every day. Sometime in the future, I'll show everyone what I am capable of because I am apparently the only one who believes in me-besides my parents that is. While thinking of all this, my dog was lying at me feet. Speaking of which, I still haven't figured a name out for him yet. I'd better hurry, too, because I don't want him to get used to the name 'boy.'
Downstairs, mom's baking some of my favorite cookies ever, coconut macaroons. She always knew that serving me several macaroons would solve my problems, but not this time.
"There're some fresh ones in the jar, honey." she said, noticing I was scavenging in the cabinets.
"Huh?"
"Macaroons. I'm assuming that's what you're looking for."
"Oh, n-n-no, I was just l-looking."
"So, isn't your friend supposed to be here at four?"
"That's w-what he said."
"Well, it's a quarter past. I hope he shows up soon."
We continued talking for a little while longer before we heard dad come in through the front door. It sounded like he was talking to someone himself. As he came into the kitchen, Brandon was right behind him.
"He showed up just as I did." dad said. "Honey, this is Brandon."
My mom stuck her hand out. "I'm Carmen, it's nice to meet you, Brandon." There was a certain kind of look that mom gave to dad. A look of uneasiness maybe.
"Nice to meet you, Mrs. Turner." Brandon responded politely. If he is trying to get on my parents' good side, I'm pretty sure he just succeeded. "Sorry I'm so late. I'm still trying to learn the area." His face was red with embarrassment.
"How're you liking the city so far?" dad questioned him.
"Well, so far I'm liking it.
"Well, you two get started on your homework. I'll bring up some drinks and macaroons in a little while, okay?" mom said with all the uneasiness still apparent.
The two of us went upstairs to my room. As Brandon was walking in, he let out a whistle. "This is a really nice room. Really big, too."
"Y-yeah," I said embarrassingly. "Let's g-get started."
Over the next hour, Brandon and I went over a lot of my notes and several sections from the book. He began to show signs of improvement quickly. In fact, I'm not entirely sure why he needs a tutor in the first place. Eventually, mom brought up a plate of macaroons and two cans of soda for us. After she left, I began to notice that while we were sitting next to each other, Brandon kept rubbing against me either with a gentle touch of his hand against mine or a not so subtle bump of the knees. Every time our skin would touch, though, it brought with it a spark of feeling that I had no idea about. I'd never felt those feelings before.
"Man, this is such crap." Brandon groaned. He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes.
"C-come on, this i-isn't that hard." I chuckled. I also noticed that over the course of an hour I grew extremely comfortable with him, which is definitely not like me.
"Easy for you to say, Mr. Best Student. Speaking of which, what's your GPA? It must be way up there." Brandon shot back.
"I-I have a-a-a 3.4."
"A 3.4! Holy crap that is way up there!" He chuckled at my obvious embarrassment. He took a swig of soda before asking, "So, on a different note, can I ask you a personal question?"
"U-uh, sure, I g-guess." I got out nervously.
"Well, do not take any offense to this at all, but I was wondering why you stutter so much?" he inquired. I could definitely tell that he meant no offense by his question.
Sensing that this was not a hostile question, I answered it with more ease than I normally would have. "I-i-it's just a speech d-disorder that I h-have. I've h-had this p-problem ever since I was l-l-little."
"Haven't your parents taken you to speech therapy or something?"
"Yeah, b-but nothing has helped m-me."
"Sorry to hear that then. Do you have a girlfriend?" He continued writing down some definitions on his paper.
"N-no," I muttered. "Do y-you?"
"Nah, I'm gay," he said easily. "Now, I think I finally have it down. In order to become a Senator, one must be at least thirty years old, been a citizen for a consecutive nine years, and must live in the state they want to represent." Brandon put his pen down and covered his mouth to stifle a yawn.
"R-right," I stuttered, surprised he was able to change the subject so quickly. I sneakily looked up at him.
I've never met a gay guy before. Now that I have, I don't see any difference between the two of us other than the mental thing. Brandon looks just like a normal guy. He has brown eyes and has the same skin color as me. His hair is blonde and rather long, but it accentuates his bold face. I guess he looks really mature for his age even though I don't know how old he is.
Brandon caught me staring at him. I quickly averted my gaze back down to our work. He didn't stop looking at me, though. In fact, he touched me, too. It was just a soft, gentle touch on across my arm. I looked back up at him and he had a small, almost shy, smile. Not knowing what to do, I looked back down at our work again. The faintest giggle came from him.
"Well, Danny, I should get going. I still need to eat dinner and take a shower." Brandon began packing his things in his backpack. "Thank you so much for helping me out today. I don't know what it is about you, but you really got this stuff to stick in my head. How about we do another one of these sessions on Monday after school?"
I thought for a moment. Brandon seems to be acting too nice to me. I mean, he's a nice guy, but I have to consider the fact that he might be just using me. The real question is once the tutoring stops, will he continue talking to me? This could quite possibly be my first true friendship. Then again, I could be thinking way too far ahead.
"Y-yeah, Monday with b-b-be fine." I stood up and walked him to my doorway.
Brandon all of a sudden stopped and turned around. Our faces were a mere few inches apart. His eyes locked onto mine and mine to his. He slowly began to lean forward until our lips met. A jolt of energy coursed through my body upon feeling his lips on mine. I felt one of his hands caress my cheek. The other holding my face in place. I furrowed my eyebrows and closed my eyes enjoying the feeling that I was feeling. Just as quickly as he leaned in, he pulled away with the same small smile as before, except this time I knew what caused it. I on the other hand felt indifferent about this.
He kissed me.
I kissed back.
_
He's my first kiss.
But he's a he.
_
Is this right?
All these thoughts buzzed around my head. I had no idea what to do, what to say. There was no emotion showing on my face; just my furrowed eyebrows. Brandon was obviously becoming a little worried. I was just standing in front of him still shocked, staring at him with disbelief.
Then I just couldn't stop myself. "G-g-g-g-get out."
"Danny, wait, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that, but just..."
"N-no! I said g-get out. Get out n-n-nnnow!"
Without looking back, Brandon hurriedly walked away from me. I ran up to my bed and collapsed on top of it, crying my eyes out. What I'm feeling right now is indescribable. I've never felt anything like it before.
