From Last Chapter:
A short time later the boys were back up at the main house and we all made short work of unloading the last truck of stuff. Once we were done the boys asked if they could go for a ride before dinner. They all went down to the barn and started to get their horses saddled up. Colby and Connor helped Andrew with his horse. Since Andrew had never ridden a horse before, they took several laps around the corral. Jose, Steve and I were watching from the fence. Aaron stopped next to us and asked if it was ok if they rode out by the pond, saying they would take it nice and slow for Andrew. Jose said, "Sounds like a good idea. I think there is a broken wire on the fence near the pond so you can take some tools and wire with you so you can repair it while you're out there. Also, keep an eye on the weather: there might be a storm or two later this afternoon."
Jose got Aaron the tools and wire that he might need to fix the fence and then we watched them leave the corral with Connor and Colby right next to Andrew and Sean and Aaron just in front of them. Jose said, "I think that boy is in good hands. I'm headed back to the mess hall to find me some iced tea. You two want to join me?" After getting us a nice tall glass of iced tea we all settled into a rocking chair on the porch of the mess hall enjoying the view and awesome weather as we waited for the boys to return.
*********** Chapter 59 ***********
A short time later Linda and Maria retuned from town. They showed us the clothes that they had bought for Andrew. Everything was about the same as what the other boys wear, but a few sizes smaller. They took everything back to the bunk house and placed them next to Andrew's back pack and then came back to the mess hall to join us on the front porch. We spent the next couple of hours, talking back and forth about Andrew and other things. Maria mentioned how she thought that Andrew admired Aaron and saw him staring at Aaron several times.
The boys made it out to the pond and got off their horses, tying them up under the big shade tree. They showed Andrew around a bit, making sure Andrew walked around some to stretch his legs out. They all remembered how much pain they were in after their first horse ride. They spent a good hour roaming around the pond as a group, before coming back to the shade tree, laying down in the tall grass. Andrew was in heaven. He had never felt so a part of a family, even after only spending one day with Connor's family. Aaron was lying next to Connor with Andrew on the other side of Connor. Aaron asked Andrew, "Hey Andrew, how long have you been at that foster home?
Andrew answered, "About two years."
Aaron replied, "Wow, it's funny. I don't live that far from you and I don't remember ever seeing you around the neighborhood."
Andrew said, "I was never really allowed to go anywhere other than school. I had to pretty much stay at home."
Connor said, "Yeah, I tried to get him to come spend the night at our house but he could never get permission from his foster mom."
Colby said, "Well you're in a great foster home now. Steve and Mike are really cool guys. And you have some really cool brothers too."
They all laughed a bit at Colby's statement and threw a few sticks in his direction. Colby asked, "Andrew, do you know anything about your real parents?"
Andrew was quiet for a couple of minutes before he answered, "Not really. I have been in foster homes as long as I can remember. I overheard my case worker tell one of my foster parents that both my parents were heavy drug users and weren't able to care for themselves - let alone care for a baby - so they took me away from them."
Sean answered for the rest of them, "Damn dude that really sucks. We are sorry that happened to you."
Andrew thanked them, saying, "Well, things tend to work out. Because if none of that ever happened, I would have never met you guys and had got to stay in a really cool place like this ranch."
They all just laid there for a bit relaxing when they all heard a roll of thunder in the distance. Aaron got up and walked out and saw some black clouds in the distance. Aaron said, "Hey guys, that storm looks like it's heading straight for us so we better get back."
They gathered up the horses and saddled up. As they were about to leave, Aaron remembered Jose had asked him to fix a broken wire on the fence just up the trail from the pond. Aaron said, "You guys go ahead and start back. I'm going to check this fence real fast and I'll catch up to you guys."
As Aaron rode off in the other direction the four of them started back to the corral, again taking their time with one on either side of Andrew and the other in front. Aaron found the broken wire Jose told him about and got some wire and to make a temporary fix, but it still took him about twenty minutes to get it fixed. As he was working on the fence he could hear the thunder getting closer and closer.
We were still sitting on the porch and could hear the storm approaching. I could see that Maria was getting worried since the boys were still out. I told her, "Don't worry. I'm sure they are on the way back in and should be back any time."
It was only about a 30 min ride back from the pond so I knew it shouldn't be long. Just a few minutes later I saw Sean break the tree line and stop. Then I saw the others, Andrew, flanked by Connor and Colby, walk out from the tree line. Sean stayed near the tree line and kept looking back at the trail as the other kept coming toward the corral.
About that time a loud clap of thunder rolled in across the valley. I saw that the boys' horses were a little startled and Connor and Colby were right up next to Andrew ready to help him if needed. Jose stood up and stood there watching the boys for a couple of minutes before saying, "I think we are in for a good little storm. I'm going to go down to the barn and help the boys out."
Steve and I joined Jose. I could see a little concern on his face and he seemed to be walking a little faster than normal. As we reached the corral, Colby, Andrew and Connor had just made it to the gate. Jose opened the gate for them and asked, "Where is Aaron?"
Connor said, "He went to fix the fence when we heard the thunder start. He told us to start back and he would catch up."
Jose didn't answer but just looked back at Sean who was still waiting at the tree line. I could see that Sean kept looking back at us and then back at the trail. Jose whistled and motioned for him to come to the corral. Steve and I helped the other boys get their horses unsaddled and get their gear put away. I walked back out to where Jose was waiting. When Sean got to the gate, Jose asked, "Did you see Aaron up the trail?"
Sean said, "No sir and he should have caught up by know." I could see the worry on Sean's face as he climbed down off his horse. Jose took the reins to Sean's horse, saying, "Do you have your cell phone?"
Sean said he did. Jose, said, "Call Aaron."
Sean called Aaron's phone but after ringing five times it went to his voice mail. Sean looked at me and then at Jose, saying "He didn't answer."
Jose said, "Try again."
Again Sean dialed his number and got no answer. Sean looked up almost yelling, "There's his horse!" Jose and I looked down toward the tree line and saw Aaron's horse running up the trail toward the corral. Jose handed me the reins to Sean's horse. Aaron's horse slowed to a walk just as it got to the gate. Jose walked to him and was able to grab the reins but the horse kept pulling him back.
The other boys and Steve had walked down to the gate by this time. Jose looked at me saying, "Jump on Sean's horse. Steve we are going back to the pond. Get the Gadder and meet us there." Jose was climbing on Aaron's horse as he was saying this. Both Jose and I took off on horseback at a pretty good speed as Steve and the boys ran back to the mess hall where the Gadder was parked. When they got there, Linda and Maria were standing on the porch. Maria asked, "What's wrong?"
Steve replied, "I don't know. Aaron sent the boys back ahead of him when they heard the thunder, saying he would catch up after he fixed the fence but he never caught up to them and then his horse came back without him. Jose and Mike are headed back to the pond on horseback and I'm taking the Gadder out there."
Maria took charge saying, "Sean, go in the mess hall and grab the radio for your dad. You other three get out of that Gadder and get up here with me."
Of course the boys all started to say they wanted to go with me but Maria but a stop to that saying, "Boys I wasn't asking. Get up here now! Steve, take the radio with you in case your cell phone doesn't work."
Sean came running out of the mess hall with the radio handing it to Maria. Maria said, "We will be waiting here by the radio. Call as soon as you get there. I'm calling the sheriff just in case."
I looked at the boys as I started the Gadder saying, "Don't worry guys. I'm sure Aaron is fine and it was just the storm that scared his horse off."
In my heart I knew that wasn't true. I saw the way Aaron's horse seemed to pull Jose trying to get him to go back to the pond. I knew something was wrong.
It only took Jose and me about ten minutes to make it to the pond. We slowed down to a walk as we got close to the big shade tree where the boys like to hang out. We didn't see Aaron anywhere around the tree so Jose started to call out his name. The ground was still pretty soft due to the recent rains, so it was easy to find the horse prints leading in the direction of where the fence was broken. I was behind Jose as we rode along the fence line. About five minutes later my heart sank as I saw Aaron lying on the ground about twenty feet away from the fence line right where he was working.
