From Last Chapter:
We then went out to the barn and found a huge stack of wood stacked near the barn. It was the wood for the new barn that would be twice as big as the current barn. It would be capable of holding twenty six horses with room to grow if needed.
The boys went to work taking care of the horses. They got them all moved out into the larger corral so they could get the stalls cleaned out. Steve and I helped but let the boys do most the work. They really seamed to love the hard work that came with caring for the horses.
By lunch the boys were done. Steve and I had gotten the lunch we packed out. Jose had a huge picnic table built and placed under the huge oak tree outside the barn for us to use. Just as we were finishing lunch Sean got a text from Brian saying they were on the way and gave them the directions.
About an hour later Brian and his parents pulled up the lane. Sean told them to drive past the main house and down near the barn were we were relaxing under the shade tree. Steve and I got up and walked with Sean to where they had parked.
Chapter 50
Sean went to Brian and shook his hand. Steve and I walked up behind him and shook hands with Brian's parents , thanking them for coming out. We invited them to walk down to the picnic table. I noticed the rest of our boys hadn't left their seats and just watched us walk back toward them. I could see the three of them were not as excited to see Brian as Sean was.
When we got to the table, I took the liberty to introduce the boys to Jim and Helen. You could feel the tension in the air , and you could tell that everyone could feel it. I took it upon myself to get a conversation started, asking Jim if they had any problem finding the place. Jim said that they didn't have any problems and asked about all the construction going on.
I took the chance to explain to the three of them that we were starting a ranch for under privileged kids, or kids needing a second chance. Someplace where they can be themselves without being judged; a place where they can have a chance to make a life for themselves.
, I asked, "Would you guys like to take a little tour?" They agreed, so we all walked back up to the main house. Steve and I explained the layout of the ranch, with the main house for the two of us, and the two "ranch hand" buildings, which flanked the main house, where the kids would stay.
Steve explained, "The plan is, once the main house and one of the ranch hand buildings are finished, we would all be moving out here. We have three ranch hands that will be moving up from San Antonio once they finish their classes. They all attend college down there and work for my boys' grandfather on a ranch down there. They will be transferring up here and helping us out on this ranch."
Jim seemed very interested, saying, "This area really needs this. I work with the courts, and I see kids every day that could benefit from a place like this."
I said, "As a police officer , I see them every day, as well. We hope this will be a place where we can teach young men some responsibility, by having them take care of their own horse, along with helping with the day to day chores that go along with running a ranch. A good friend has donated the use of this land and provided us with the horses. Sean and Connor's grandparents are moving in to a house just over the hill. They have been working on a ranch for many years in San Antonio , where they have college students help out on the ranch. We are really looking forward to getting things up and running."
As we were talking, we showed them where the mess hall and pool will be going. We then worked our way down to the barn , where we joined the boys. While we were talking with Jim and Helen, Sean had led Brian down to the barn. Of course Colby, Aaron and Connor, were all right with them; never more than an arms length away from Sean.
When we joined the boys, I noticed all our boys were either inside the corral with the horses, or sitting on the top rail. but Brian was standing on the outside of the corral. Once we were all at the corral, Sean asked, "Can we go for a short ride? Brian has never ridden a horse before."
I looked over at Steve and could tell that he was a little uncomfortable with idea, since the boys would be out of our sight. Everyone was looking at Steve in silence. I looked from Steve to Sean and could see the pleading look he was giving his dad. After what seemed to be an extra long time to answer, Steve answered, "I don't see why not, as long as it's ok with his parents."
Jim looked at Brain and then Helen, before saying, "Sure, I don't see why not, as long as it is just a short one. We have to get back into town soon."
Sean was smiling ear to ear. but when I looked at Colby and Aaron. they didn't seem to be so excited. The boys used my saddle and got one of the more gentle horses readied for Brian before they got their own horses readied. Once they were all ready, Colby held the horse while Sean gave Brain horse riding 101.
Brian looked a little nervous as he was sitting there, waiting for the rest of the boys to climb onto their horses. Once the boys were all mounted up, they started toward the gate where I was standing. I opened the gate to let them out, but noticed Brian was still standing in the same spot, with a confused look on his face.
Sean turned around to see Brian just sitting there,so he turned his horse around and brought it up alongside Brian's horse. Brian just looked over at Sean, saying, "This is the first time I've ever been on a horse, so I have no clue what I'm doing."
Sean just smiled and said, "Well, just kick her in the sides with the heels of your feet to get her to go, and pull the reins to whatever side you want her nose to go. Give her a kick and she will fall right in behind Colby's horse. I will stay behind you, in case you have any problems."
Brian gave his horse a good kick and she started walking toward the gate, falling in behind Colby. I just smiled at them as they went through the gate, closing it behind them. We four adults watched the four boys take off down the trail. We then went back the picnic table to chat, while the boys went for their ride.
About an hour later . I saw the five boys emerge from the wood line, slowly working their way back toward the corral. Aaron and Conner were out front, riding side by side, while the other three were a bit behind them, with Sean and Colby on either side of Brian. Even though I couldn't hear what they were saying,I could see that all three were talking back and forth.
Once inside the corral, they all watered their horses and got the saddles taken off. I walked over to the barn to see how things were going, while Steve and Brian's parents relaxed under the tree.
When I walked into the barn I saw the boys brushing down their horses. Sean and Colby were helping Brian, while Conner and Aaron took care of their horses. I don't think the boys saw me walk up to the stall they were in. As I was standing there watching them, I heard Brian say, "Man, I now know why you are all wearing really tight jeans. My balls are killing me. Next time I come out here, remind me to wear my tight jeans, so my balls don't bounce all over the saddle like they did in these loose shorts."
All three boys laughed, and kept on chatting. Brian went on and on about the good time he had had, and really wants to come out again to do some more riding. I got the feeling that they were going to all get along pretty well. Even Colby had a smile on his face. I left the boys to their task and went back to join Steve and Brian's parents.
It wasn't long before the boys came out to join us under the shade tree; and a short time later, Brian's dad suggested they load up to head back to town. We still had a few things that we needed to get done before we headed back to down. As we were saying our goodbyes, I noticed that Brian and Colby actually shook hands with smiles on their faces. Later on, I asked Steve if he saw it, which he had. Both Steve and I agreed that the meeting went better than we thought it would.
Once we got everything done at the ranch, we headed back to town. By the time we all got showers, it was dinner time. Conner and I made some hamburger patties to grill. Since it was Saturday night, Aaron took Colby and Sean to get a movie from the Red Box for us to watch after dinner.
By the time they got back with the movie, dinner was ready. The boys talked back and, about their day. From what I heard, it sounded like everyone had a good time, and there were no issues with Brian being there. They even talked about taking Brian out to the big pond on the other side of the ranch, the next time he comes out.
It didn't take long for the boys to devour two hamburgers each, and with the cleanup done, we all went to our usual spots in the living room to watch our movie. Steve and I were lounging on the big couch while, Colby and Sean cuddled on the love seat. And, of course, Aaron and Connor were sitting together in the oversized chair.
By the time the movie was over, most of us were yawning, every couple of minutes. Steve and I hugged all the boys good night before heading to our bedroom. The boys each got ready for bed and said their good nights. Colby and Sean went to their room, while Aaron went to Connors room and climbed in bed with him, which has become the norm when he stayed the night at our place.
There wasn't much more than a little touching here and there in any of the bedrooms. Everyone was pretty tired from our long day out at the ranch, so everyone seemed content with some cuddling before drifting off to sleep.
