Chapter 6: Brighter Discontent
I sat between Hannah and Marco, watching Leprechaun 4: Leprechaun in Space. It was so near Halloween and I was kind of sad, but having them there made it all better. Then we watched the finale Nip/Tuck, which was a re-run. As it got to the end, I began singing the song which I believe was "Brighter Discontent" by The Submarines.
Marco looked over at me, " You actually like this song?" he asked.
"You don't?" I chuckled, continuing the song.
"I don't know. I guess so." he shrugged.
"Well, I like it." Hannah chuckled, " And I think this show is the bestest ever!"
"Bestest?" Marco smirked.
"Yeah, idiot. Bestest." Hannah said.
"Keep it down, I'm trying to hear the song." I said, still singing. As I got to the part of the song that gets louder, I was hit with a pillow, " How rude."
"Sorry. Did I do that?" Marco smiled mischeviously.
"What time is it?" I asked.
"11:30. You two should be in bed." Marco said, looking down at his watch.
"You just want us in bed so you can go and see your girlfriend." Hannah joked.
Marco's face went red, " No, but seriously, tomorrow is the team party and I really want you two to be there when I get the MVP award." he smiled.
"Yeah, then there's the party at Harry's house." Hannah smirked.
"Who said you were going to that?" Marco asked.
"Mom already said I could go, as long as I don't go alone and I don't get drunk and/or high." Hannah said quickly, " So ha."
"Fine." Marco said, getting up and leaving, " Good night."
I flipped through the channels and stopped on Comedy Central, " Hey! A puppet!" I screeched, " Haha, purple." I laughed.
"Dork." Hannah chuckled. I saw Hannah's phone light up and she smiled really big and walked away. I smiled, maybe she was finally getting a boyfriend.
The next morning, Hannah went to Ira's Diner to meet with Zack Kennin. Hannah and Zack had met when they were in Summer camp and everytime she went back, they dated and he was the first boy she ever went 'far' with, even though not 'far far'. Hannah had told Adaen about him, yes, but she had just said a boy at Summer Camp and had neglected to tell him that she had fallen for him and went as far as she did. Even after he was too old, he had become a counselor and he and she had been so close, so very close.
As Hannah walked into the Diner, she was over-joyed and felt a surge of surrealism as she hugged Zack warmly.
"Bananza!" Zack said, kissing her.
"Zack! I'm so glad to see you!" Hannah said quickly.
"I missed you, you're..." he checked her out, " Different."
Hannah sat at the table, " So, you're going to college at Massaro?" she said nervously.
"Yeah, so, you're still in high school?" Zack asked.
"Yes. I'm almost a freshman...in college." Hannah smirked, blushing.
"You don't have to be nervous, I'm just as nervous." Zack smiled, " So, how's life?"
"Well..." Hannah said, starting the conversation that would catch them up on their history.
Ballard, Bradley, Davis, and Harris sat around Davis' room, Ballard and Harris were playing the X-Box 360 while Bradley watched and Davis wrote his speech for accepting half of the MVP award.
"This is not right," Ballard said, turning left hard in the game, " MVP, most valuable player, one person. You. Not you and Marco."
"Well, the Coach picked both of us." Davis growled, " Look, it's over, just get over it."
"All I'm sayin is that Marco is always messing something up." Ballard said, still into the game.
Bradley looked back, " Yeah, him and his little fag patrol." he sneered.
Davis winced, " Look, we all know who the star is. Me. So it won't matter after I get my acceptance into..."
"But this is bigger than that," Bradley said, " We should do something."
"Like what?" Davis asked.
"Maybe we should pull a Carrie or something." Harris suggested.
"Whaddya mean?" Ballard asked.
"I got it." Bradley smirked, " We'll lock the door so that you can get the award alone. We'll rig it to unlock when you need it to, but when he tries to get out, he won't be able to."
"That's genius." Harris chuckled.
"Thanks." Bradley said, " Come on, guys, while Mr. MVP writes the paper, we'll get supplies." he said, leaving with them.
I walked into the Diner, trying to find Hannah and I found her sitting with some guy. From the back, he looked familiar. I walked closer to see who it was. I was shocked when I saw that it was Zack Kennin and Hannah looked up at me, shocked that I was there. She immediately jumped up and he looked back, more shocked than either of us.
"What's going on?" I asked.
Hannah blushed, " Ummm, you remember the guy from Summer Camp? The...uh...guy." she asked nervously.
My head was in a whirl and I remembered the Haunted House and the stories I had heard about the 'Guy' from Summer Camp and it all clicked, " Yeah," I nodded, extending my hand, " Hi, my name is Adaen Lawrence. You must be..."
"Zack, Kennin." he said nervously.
There was an awkward silence before Hannah cleared her throat, " Umm, yeah, so we were just having lunch and I was...was gonna call you and tell you that, but we were having so much fun." she stammered.
"Is this your boyfriend?" he asked, " I've heard so much about you."
"No, but good save." I smiled weakly, " Best friend."
"I hate to rush off, but I'm gonna go." he said, kissing her on the cheek, " Nice meeting you." he said leaving.
"I know, I know, but I'll tell you as soon as I get back from the bathroom." she said, rushing to the bathroom.
I smiled and headed in the opposite direction. I caught up with Zack just as he got to a corner by the door, " What the hell was that?!" I asked angrily.
"What?" he sighed.
"Hitting on me at the Haunted House, then you mysteriously pop in town for my 'friend'?" I asked.
"What?" he asked, " Are you always so vain? This isn't about you."
"Then what is it about?" I asked.
"I met her way before I met you." Zack argued, " I love her, I was just gonna get some from you."
"I can live with that, I mean, I'm not like," Hannah had come back from the bathroom and found us at this point, " 'Oh I need you to be interested in me and fuck me and forget her! She's just not worth it." I said, mocking his obvious thought of me.
Hannah gasped softly and ducked behind the corner. Zack grabbed me and kissed me as Hannah looked around the corner. Hannah was furious and strode back to the seat, " See, no spark, no emotion. NOTHING. NOW LEAVE ME ALONE." Zack said, leaving.
I grunted and turned to walk back to Hannah, but she was right there, " Hey, where are you going?" I asked.
"Home." Hannah said coldly, leaving.
"Han..." I said, watching her leave.
"ONE, TWO, THREE!" Christina shouted over all the grunting and shouting in the gym. She was the Head Cheerleader. Head Cheerleader. She was their guide. Their god, at least in this gym and if they didn't like it, they could leave. Just like Davis. He couldn't take it, so he left. But she had left him, or that's what her side was. It would always be that way, " Girls, come on, nationals are coming..." she stopped as Julie ran through the door, her uniform halfway on.
"Sorry I'm late, I just..." she stopped when she saw how Christina and Kendall were looking at her, " What?"
"What do you mean what? You come in an hour late and ask me what?" Christina asked.
"An hour?" Julie asked, " 30 or 40 minutes."
"Still, all the other girls made it on time..." Christina sneered.
"I didn't." Kristen Barber said, raising her hand.
Christina rolled her eyes, " You were three minutes late." she said impatiently.
"Not an hour? Just minutes." Julie asked.
"That is so different." Christina frowned.
"Whatever, can we just get on with it?" Kendall sighed.
"Yeah." Julie said quickly.
"I suggest if you can't make it on time, you just don't come." Christina said.
"What's your problem?" Julie asked.
"You being late." Christina said, " I mean, you have time to hang out with Marco and the Loser Squad, but you can't make it to hang out with...the squad?"
"The Squad? Oh, right." Julie said, turning.
"Julie, where are you going?" Kendall shouted.
"I've got better things to do." Julie said, giving them the finger.
"OKAY EVERYBODY! ONE, TWO, THREE, EVERYBODY LEGS UP!" Christina shouted.
"Fuck!" I shouted at my phone, " Answer the phone!"
"Who are you talking to?" Marco asked.
"Well, this stupid phone. I mean, this is ridiculous." I said, " It's gotta be the phone."
"Who are you trying to call?" he asked.
"Your sister. I've looked everywhere and that's how I ended up here, I figured she'd be with you at the gym." I said, noticing how good Marco looked all sweaty.
"She's not here. I haven't talked to her since last night." he said, " So, where've you been? You were gone when I woke up."
"Huh?" I asked, sending her a text.
"I mean, not that I checked up on you, I just passed the room and saw you gone and.." he stopped nervously.
"Well, I had to go and get clothes. I mean, not that I have my own Julie...or, you know, Jonas, but I do like to feel clean." I smirked
"Yeah, I mean..." Marco said.
"Are you okay?" I asked, " Are you nervous about the award?"
"Yeah," he said quickly, " That's it. It's...that." he smiled.
"Well, it'll be okay. I mean, you already won the award, so, it's a given." I chuckled, " Awww, relax."
"Right. Well, I'll see you later. If I see Hannah, I'll tell heh your looking for her." Marco said.
"Later." I said, walking away.
The night was in full swing and everything was going as planned. It was like a ball without the ball. Behind the cool, calm exterior of the night, there was a march of chaos as everyone tried to find their place in the event. The night had started off with bang. Literally as the mayor's driver was in an accident with Ballard Tipton's parents. That was an accident that I was sort of happy to see. Don't ask me why. But as it got closer and closer to time, I got nervous, so I went backstage to find Marco.
"Marco?" I asked, swinging the door open to see Davis standing before me. I frowned, " Is Marco here?"
"No." Davis said simply.
"Oh. Kay." I said, turning to leave.
"You could say something to me." Davis said angrily.
"Why? I thought you couldn't do this." I said.
Davis sighed, " Look, I told you...I don't need this, not right now." he said, looking down at his speech.
I chuckled angrily, " I can't believe you. Do you think that I'm just something in your life that you can turn on and off? God, you're an unbelievable asshole." I said.
"You like it." he said, causing me to look at him, " Yeah, I meant that two ways."
"Asshole." I growled.
Davis moved over to me and kissed me, catching me off guard. I felt his tongue invade my mouth and our tongues fought passionately. We quickly broke apart as the door opened and we stared at Marco as he stared at us. Just then, the music started outside.
"Umm, well, I'm gonna go find a seat." I said, walking out of the room.
Davis and Marco just stared at each other, then Marco walked up to Davis' face, " What do you think you're doing?" he asked.
"What do you mean?" Davis smirked.
"Look, I don't know what you're up to but if you even think about hurting him..." Marco said, his fist balled up.
"What goes on between me and him is our business." Davis said quickly.
"Well, I..." Marco said, but before he could say anything else, he heard his and Davis' name being called outside, " You just got saved." he said, trying to open the door.
"What?" Davis asked, remembering what he'd done, " OH shit! Are you serious?!"
"What?" Marco asked.
"I don't think we're getting out." Davis said, striking the door.
I walked out to the table with Laura (Marco's mom), Michael (Hannah's dad), and Hannah. When I sat down by Hannah, she moved over. I looked at her oddly.
"Where have you been? I've been calling you all day." I said quickly.
"I know." Hannah said quickly.
"And the texts..." I said.
"Yup." she said coldly.
"And you're not talking to me?" I asked.
Hannah turned to me, " You're sitting in Zack's seat." she said, causing me to look back and see Zack.
"Are you serious?" I asked.
"Forget me, I'm not worth it." Hannah said.
"What? Hannah, I didn't say...okay, I did, but you only heard.." I said quickly, turning to Zack, " Tell her."
"He came onto me." Zack lied.
"I cannot believe this." I said, standing, "Hannah..."
"Go." she said, turning back to the stage.
I nodded, leaving out of the room and not bothering to watch the award being given.
It had been an hour since the banquet was supposed to have started and the guys tried everything they could, but could not get out of the room. Marco layed on the couch, facing up while Davis sat on the floor against the wall.
"We haven't done anything." Davis said tiredly.
Marco sat up, " What?" he asked.
"Me and Adaen. We kissed, I freaked, told him that I couldn't, and now I'm trying to get him back. God, that sounded weird to say." Davis said, standing.
"I meant what I said, if you hurt him, I'll snap you in half." Marco said casually.
"Look you could." Davis laughed, " And he's mad."
"He was just kissing you." Marco said quickly.
"I kissed him." Davis said slowly, " And you walked in and ruined it."
"Good." Marco said, flopping back down on the couch.
"Right. I wonder why they haven't looked for us yet." Davis sighed, " I mean, dad..."
"Oh yeah, cause he's such a dutiful father." Marco said.
"What?" Davis asked.
"Dutiful... it means.."
"I know what it means, I just don't understand why you'd say that." Davis said angrily
"I remember when we were six, your dad griped you out and made you cry in front of the whole team, then he told you to stop crying because crying is for losers." Marco said.
"Dad is just..."
"Overbearing." Marco said.
"You just don't know him." Davis argued.
"That works more toward my theory." Marco said.
There was a knock on the door.
"HelP! HELP!" they both shouted.
"Who's in there?" A voice asked.
"JUST PLEASE LET US OUT!" Marco yelled.
The door opened and Larry Bergman stood looking at them.
At the party, I looked around, trying to find Hannah, or at least Zack. I couldn't find either, but I know they were there. I walked into a room where there were most of the partiers were and I stopped. Julie was standing in the middle of the room, watching the t.v. screen and sobbing. On the screen, she was having sex with Darrieus. I looked from her to the movie, then walked over to the DVD player and ejected the DVD.
"WHAT IN THE FUCK ARE YOU DOIN?!" Ballard asked, standing in front of me.
I snapped the DVD in half, " I don't know. But I have a feeling that it's the right thing." I said, unsure of myself, especially because everyone was staring at me.
"You were..." Hannah said, but stopped.
"What?" Christina asked.
Hannah looked at me, " Go ahead. Say it. I mean, it's what you believe, right. We've know each other since we were born, but I would lie to you." I said.
She stood in front of me, and we stood in front of everyone, " He tried to fuck my boyfriend." she said bitterly.
I looked around, noticing that Davis and Marco were there, " Bullshit! I'm not an angel, but I would never..."
She slapped me, " I HEARD YOU!" she said angrily.
I heard the gasps and touched my face. I was speechless. Everyone was. I just shook my head and walked past her. On the way out of the house, I grabbed a bottle of vodka and started walking down the street. Soon I had drunk half of it and I saw the lights pull up and the black truck.
"Hey." Davis said, getting out of the truck, " Get in the car."
"What? No. I'm good." I said drunkenly.
"Come on." Davis said, picking me up and putting me in the truck. I struggled and he just laughed, " Are you always so stubborn?"
"Maybe." I smiled, " Are we gonna fuck?"
Davis looked at me, " What?" he asked.
"I mean, I'm drunk and you're here and I'm pretty horny." I said, slinking in the seat.
"I..." he stammered.
"Calm down." I laughed, closing my eyes.
"Hey." Christina said to Hannah, who was still at the party, " Nice work. I mean, if he would have hit on my boyfriend, I think I would have done the same thing."
"I guess." Hannah said sadly.
"Me, Kendall, Ballard, and Bradley are going to a club, wanna go?" Christina asked.
"Can my boyfriend go?" Hannah asked.
"Duh." Christina smiled as they headed away from the party.
As I stumbled into the house drunkenly, I flipped the light switch and tried to climb the stairs. As I got to the fourth stair, I fell and slid down. Davis came running and helped me up to my room.
I laughed.
"What's funny?" He asked.
"I just can't catch a break." I laughed, " My best friend outs me, the guy I like breaks my heart, I get my locker hate...crime-ed. Ed. Hahaha. Then I meet a guy at a Haunted House and he turns out to be the scum of the Earth. Then my fucking whore of a friend believes that scummy...scum...dummy over me. Can you believe that? I mean, I spend all this time trying to just live here and she thinks that I'd..besides, i've got too many problems with love already. I mean, you don't even want to be with me." I chuckled.
Davis sighed, " I was scared. I still kinda am, but I don't think I'd be able to deal with not being with you." he said.
"That's sweet." I smiled drunkenly, " We should have sex now." I said, kissing him.
"No." he said.
"That part still freak you out?" I asked.
"No. Your body is...I want to touch it.." Davis said slowly.
"Mine? Really?" I asked.
"Yes, but you're drunk and I really, really like you." Davis said, laying me on the bed and laying next to me.
"Where's Marco?" I asked.
"He took Julie home." Davis said.
"Oh." I smiled, " That's nice. I mean, he should be happy."
"Do you love him?" Davis asked.
"I love tacos." I smiled. He got up to leave, " Will you stay with me? I mean, we don't have to have sex, but, will you stay?"
Davis nodded and slid in behind me. I smiled and pulled his strong arms around my waist. I heard him breathe in and out and soon I fell asleep.
Well, if you liked it please tell me so I can start work on the next one.
