We had driven through Indianapolis and were still headed north on Indiana State Road 9. Jake had been asleep for about the last 100 miles. We had entered a little town called Alexandria, which meant the next stop had to be Fairmount, according to the map.
"Hey Jake, wake up, we're almost there."
"I;m so excited, Chuck. I want you to see everything for me and describe everything. Don't leave out the color of a barn or a dip in the road. Paint me a picture that I can remember always in my mind."
"You got it, Buddy. All right, we're gonna turn off on State Road 26. There's a farm on the left with a house and a big barn. Now on the right there are just a few houses and something called the Wesleyan Campground. There's a lotta old tall, white, wooden buildings...and now back on the left is a school. A sign says it's The Academy. It's an old 19th century red brick building with some stones and a pitched slate roof. That must be where Jimmy went to school. Now the road is leading downward like we're going into a valley, and on the right in the distance you can see the town...Fairmount. Lots and lots of trees and reaching high about them is an old water tower, On the left there are farm fields as far as I can see. We're coming to a creek. The sign says Back Creek...and now we're coming to an intersection...let me see...Yeah...Sand Pike. That's what the guy at the last filling station told me to look for...Sand Pike. We're suppose to turn left there and that will take us to the cemetary."
"What kind of day is it, Chuck?"
"It's a beautiful day. The sun's bright...Everything is pretty and green. I'm in my favorite car, just like Jimmy's and I've got my love beside me...All is right with the world for a change. Are you happy?"
"I'm as happy as if I had my eyesight back."
"Jake, have I told you how proud I am of the adjustment you've made?"
"You didn't have to. I've learned to visualize your expressions by the tone of your voice. Remember, I got to see you every day for over 12 years and I know you inside out."
"You've only known my insides for a few short weeks."
"Shut up, if you're gonna talk nasty...How are you holding out...You tired from driving?"
"I don't get tired, when I'm with you."
'Just as long as you don't get tired of me."
"Never...not in a million years. You belong to me and I, to you, forever and ever...Now you got that pictured in you mind?"
"In living color."
We had travelled about a mile down Sand Pike when I saw what looked like a wrought iron fence leading into the cemetary.
"Chuck, do you believe that story about Jimmy peeing in front of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson?"
"Yeah, to me, it's just the kind of thing Jimmy would do. It wasn't just in front of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, it was in front of the entire cast and crew of 'Giant'. I heard he just whipped his dick out of his jeans and peed for all the world to see."
"Gosh, why do you think he did it?"
"I can think of two reasons. First, because he WAS James Dean. And secondly, he did it because he WANTED to, and he knew no one could stop him."
"Wow, I wish I could have seen him."
"Pervert!"
"You think anyone took a picture of him with his dick out?"
"Probably, some photographer standing there looking at him snapped one,"
"Wish I could see it!"
"Jake, you couldn't see it if we had it."
"Well, you could describe it to me."
"I could describe it to you, without the picture."
"OK, do it then."
"What?"
"Pretend we're there and describe to me what you see."
"I've said it before and it looks like I'll continue to say it...You're incorrigible,"
"Come on, let me have my fun, make up a story and describe everything in detail."
"You're the one with the vivid imagination...You describe it to me."
"OK...they're in Texas. They're filming an outdoor scene in 'Giant'. Jimmy doesn't like the way George Stevens is directing the film. You see, Jimmy is a New York stage actor and he likes to do everything in one shot. And this director, George Stevens likes to shoot the same shot over and over...20 or 30 times and Jimmy is fucking mad. He and George get into this big fight,,,and they scream and holler at each other...and Elizabeth Taylor tries to step in and calm them down...and Jimmy gets madder and walks away...and then suddenly he turns back at looks at everyone and unzips his pants and flips out a seven inch cock with a shiny red head...and then he points it at them...but mostly at George...and he lets loose with a big golden stream...and everyone is shocked and surprised and they stand there in disbelief with their mouths open...and then Dennis Hopper starts laughing...and then Elizabeth starts laughing...and Rock Hudson starts applauding...and soon everyone is laughing and clapping their hands...everyone except George. He is still mad...and then Jimmy finishes and puts his dick back in his tight jeans and takes a bow...How's that."
"If I didn't know better, I would swear you were there."
"I did pretty good, didn't I?"
"You may become a writer if you can learn to put your thoughts on paper."
"That reminds me...I've got to sign up for Braille lessons when we get back."
"That's a good idea,"
"I already can read some things with my fingers."
"What?"
"I can describe every inch of you naked body by just touching you."
"You could do that in the dark...when you COULD see."
"Yeah, but I'm more aware of it now."
"I think that's the hill we're looking for, up ahead...Let's get out and walk up to the grave. This is a beautiful cemetary. The graves are spread out far apart. There are big slopes of green grass and big grey tombstones. Now I think they said that Jimmy is at the top of the hill and to the right...Here take my arm. We're going up a rising and I don't want you to trip...That little creek runs around to the back of the cemetary. I see a large headstone. That must be it."
"What's it look like?"
"Just a plain ordinary gravestone,,,about three feet wide and two feet high and about eight or ten inches thick."
"What does it say?"
"Here, let me put your fingers on the letters and you tell ME what's written on it."
I made him kneel on the grave and stretch out his hand and slowly he moved his fingers into te crevices etched in the grey granite.
"What do you feel?"
"J..A..M..E..S..B..period..D..E..A..N.."
"Good, go on."
"I think it's a one...am I right?"
"Yeah, it's a one."
"OK...1..9..3..1..and then there's a line and , OK...1..9..5..5."
"Good"
"Is that all, I mean are there more letters I'm missing?"
"Nope you got 'em all. There's a lot of the gravestone missing, though."
"Whaddya mean?"
"It looks like people have chipped away at the granite and have taken quite a few souvenirs."
"Oh, Chuck...do you think we could chip away a piece of it too...I would hate to have come this far and not be able to take a part of Jimmy back with me."
"That's what I was thinking...You stay here and let me go back to the car and get the handle of my jack and I'll chisel off a little piece,"
"What's all this garbage I feel on the ground?"
"It looks like many of his fans were influenced by "Rebel" just like we were. There's all kinds of beer cans, cigarettes, dead flowers, I even see a deck of cards...and Jake,,,you won't believe this...but there's a bunch of rubbers someone left here...still in the cellophane wrappers."
"You're kidding,"
"Nope...here take a pack and maybe we'll try 'em out later."
"I've never even had one on...I've carried one in my billfold since I was 13, but I've never put it on."
"Well that will something new for you then, won't it?"
"Have you ever worn a rubber, Chuck?"
"Oh lots of them."
"When?"
"When I use to fuck the varsity football team before they had showered and I didn't want to get my dick all sweaty and dirty."
"You better NOT have!...You didn't really, did you?"
"That's for me to know and for you to find out."
"If I DO find out, then I'm going to sue you for divorce?"
"And get all my money?"
"No...just get all of you...all to myself...forever."
It seemed so right to want to kiss Jake while kneeling on James Dean's grave. I didn't care if anyone saw us. I was with the two men in my life, My lover and my idol.
After what Jake had suffered and after all I had lost, it was only fair and
fitting for us to have found some happiness. Jimmy was tormented when he was alive. He had lost his mother when he was nine. He had gone through many relationships with both men and women and never had that one person to call his own. Jake and I were lucky...we had each other before we found each other and nothing could take that away from us...not death, or fires, or car crashes, or blindness...nothing. We would have our new home...we would have Mac, Jake's seeing eye dog. We had enough money for the rest of our live...and we had love. We both knew that there would be rough times ahead. Jake, without his sight, force us to live in a world we hadn't expected, but as the old saying goes, "I would rather live in his world completely, than have a part of him trying to live in mine."
We had paid our homage. We had worshipped our king, Now it was time to go home and like the phoenix rising out of the ashes, we would blow on that little glowing ember left in the cinders of our lives and that's all we needed...just a tiny ember to lighten our darkened destiny and show us how to live for the next forty or fifty years.
I didn't want to end our story by describing one of our sex scenes. Sure, we had many, but I'll tell about them...some other time.
