"Women....hmmm..," Phinneas began.
"The common whores you run into every port ain' worth wastin' yer time on. Ye'll catch some disease that ye'll never be rid of. So if yer so inclined, best ye get me advice. The men on the ship won't guide ye in the right way with women, they be makin' babies and havin' to pay their whores on top of it." He looked at both of them cautiously.
"Howe'r, ye need to think serious 'bout gettn' yerselves some wives." Phinneas continued.
The young pirates looked aghast. In one sentence Phinneas told them to not get involved with any other men on the ship, now he tells them to get wives."
"What fer?" Eirvarph spoke up.
Phinneas paused a minute. Indeed, what for? He himself hadn't seen his in over five years, the captain in over twelve. His wife was in some village in the New World. For all he knew, she might be dead. He never felt any romantic feelings for her and he certainly preferred sex with men over the few times he was obligated to having sex with her.
"Because, it is what's done," he snapped.
"Because, ye will one day be gentlemen, and ye can't be bachelors all yer lives." Phinneas went on. "If yer fortunate, ye can find ye a old widow who don' want to have relations and go about yer business with each other. I did until he was kill'd in battle."
Eirvarph and Megmefin looked at each other, then back at him sadly. Phinneas had a pained look on his face.
"Aye, 'tis been two years almos'. We ran into a Spanish flotilla off Cape Verde. 'Twas a fierce battle, and the Spanish began boarding the Howl of the Corsair. We were keepin' most from boarding, but a few got through and began shootin' anywhere. Our cannoneers finally began hittin' the flotilla and the Spanish panicked an' ran back to their ship, lest wise, we make them prisoners. When I found him, he was gone. I felt like I died with him."
Megmefin got up and went over to the older pirate and began massaging his shoulders and stroking his hair. Phinneas took firm hold of one of Megmefin's hands and held it next to his own face. Eirvarph got up as well and knelt at Phinneas' knees and looked into the face of the older officer. He truly felt sorry for him and his pain. "''Cept for this mornin', I haven' had relations with any man since he died," Phinneas said.
Eirvarph took his other hand and held it and stroked Phinneas' face softly.
Touched by their attempts to comfort him, Phinneas broke down and began sobbing. Eirvarph could feel tears stinging in his eyes as well, and reached up and hugged Phinneas around the torso, laying his head on his chest. Megmefin reached around, grabbed hold of Eirvarph's hand and hugged around Phinneas' shoulders. He thought of how he might feel if Eirvarph were taken from him like Phinneas' mate and he wept on the older man's shoulder.
"Aye, ye two be good mates," Phinneas finally said after some time, "ye be what he and I were to each other." And he took his hands and grabbed each of theirs and held them firmly.
Awkwardly, the men let go of each other and the two younger pirates sat back down in their chairs. There was a silence in the room as each man thought about what Phinneas had said. They picked at their food and looked at each other not sure what to do or say next.
"Aye, 'tis been a bit much for me this morning," Phinneas said, "I think I need to lay down a bit and pull me thoughts together."
He got up from the table, and took off his clothing except for his underwear. The young men, not knowing exactly what they would do on the island alone without their mate, quietly took off their clothing as well. Megmefin climbed into bed with Phinneas in front of him while Eirvarph laid behind the older sailor.
"No, mates, I don' want anythin' like that right now." Phinneas said quietly.
Eirvarph hugged Phinneas close to him and said, "We aren' here for that either. Jus' helping ye. Calm yerself and sleep well, friend, we're here just fer yer comfort and to keep you."
Phinneas pulled Megmefin close to him, wrapped his muscular arm over the younger man's torso like Eirvarph held him and quickly fell deep asleep guarded by his two strapping mates.
