Disclaimer: This story is a work of pure fiction created by my imagination. Certain parts of this story will contain sex between consenting adult male partners. This story is homosexual in nature and should only be viewed by those over the required age in your area. If you are reading this story and are not of that age then I do not want to know so please don't tell me.
Author's Note: I have received some very nice feedback on this and I hope it keeps coming. I have a lot of stuff going on in my life right now but I will still make the attempt to write whenever possible. I finally wrote the sex scene and not to disappoint any of you but that might be it for a while. I haven't really decided where the story is going from here and it is mostly writing itself but I at least do have a small idea. Mainly what my intent for this chapter is to tie up lose ends and give you readers a little more info about the characters. So here is chapter five of Dreams and Satin Sheets.
Chapter 5: The Other Shoe
It was early the next morning and Josh was sleeping upstairs. I was sitting on the patio waiting for the sun to rise. The birds had already realized that it was the beginning of a new day and were singing happily and the horizon was beginning to lighten. I had awakened about an hour ago and couldn't fall back asleep. I had come down here to keep from waking the angel in my bed. I had allowed my thoughts to carry me away and didn't notice that Josh had come outside and was standing beside my chair. He finally decided to speak and startled me in doing so.
"Good morning," he said.
"Geez scare me to death," I said as he leaned down to kiss me.
"Sorry, but you looked deep in thought. I have been standing here for a few minutes waiting for you to notice. Is anything wrong?" he asked me while taking a seat beside me.
"Just thinking about stuff," I said draining the last of the orange juice from my glass.
"Anything you wanna talk about?" he asked cautiously.
I sighed and stood up taking Josh's hand and led him over to the lounge chair. He sat down first and I sat down between his legs and he cradled me in his arms. We sat that way for a few minutes with him just holding me and kissing the top of my head. It was exactly what I needed and his grip on me didn't slip one bit while I began talking. "I am just waiting on the other shoe to drop," I said.
"I'm not sure I understand," he said the puzzlement clear in his voice.
"It's just that we're so happy and I love you so much I am just waiting on something to come along to screw it all up. As I said the words my voice began to crack and I could feel the burning tears begin to slide down my cheeks.
"Oh baby, it's ok nothing is gonna happen to us." he said reassuringly.
"You can't promise me that," I said feeling more tears about to fall.
"No I suppose I can't, we never know what we are going to face in the future, but I can't think of anything that would make me want to leave you." He said taking my hand.
I looked up and I could see his eyes staring into mine. I could barley make out his face through the tears that were about to fall from my eyes but I could see the concern and the love. I stared into his eyes and I could feel the tension melt away from me. He has this calming effect on me and all he had to do was look at me. I finally managed to compose myself enough to speak.
I looked down in the direction of my lap and began to talk, "I feel the same way but I just think we might be rushing a little too much. I mean you know all about me and I feel like I know nothing about you."
"Well baby what do you want to know? I know I haven't told you much but I just assumed that you would ask. Anything that you want to know I will tell." He said while using his finger to raise my chin.
"I want to know everything," I said. Then my face spread into a grin and I said, "But I think it would be good to start out with stuff like your job, where you live, your last name."
He chuckled then leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. Still holding me in his arms he began to talk and I simply absorbed all that he said.
"Well for starters my last name is Parker. I thought you would have known that already from the lab work which you did for me. I live a little further in the city and I will take you there anytime you want to. About my job, that's where it gets a little hard to explain. I really don't do any work if you want to get technical about it, but I do have a job or I guess you could call it a position." He said.
At this point I was thoroughly confused. A thousand thoughts began running through my head as I attempted to figure out what this position might be, but before I could draw any conclusions I felt lips pressing to my neck and Josh began speaking again.
"I can see how confused you are so I won't keep you in suspense any longer. The position that I hold is Vice president of Savannah bank and trust. I said that is my position because I don't do very much except sign a bunch of papers and surf the internet all day. Not nearly as important as your job but hey it pays the bills." He said laughing.
"Wow, who knew I was dating a Vice President, and don't say that you aren't important. Because you are important to me and don't you forget that." I said smiling.
We talked for a while longer with all of the tension melting away with the morning dew. I sat being held by Josh and he would occasionally kiss my neck or cheek as we continued talking about our families, friends, and anything else important in our lives. I enjoyed this time and I feel it brought us closer together.
Our time together was about to be cut short as the cordless that was lying beside us began to ring. I groaned looking at the caller id and then answered.
"This is Scott," I said dreading the response.
"Scott, I hate to do this to ya but we need you." My friend Alicia from the hospital said.
"What's wrong?" I asked no longer thinking that today was supposed to be my day off.
"Well there was a MVA on the freeway and they are backed up in the ER and half the dayshift called in today." She began to ramble.
"OK just calm down, how many are in the lab now?" I asked while going in the house to find a clean pair of scrubs. Josh was following behind me obviously wondering what was going on but not daring to ask.
"Well there is me, and Sherry, and Tammy. Everyone else called today and one has called in for this evening." She said as I heard the people running around in the background.
"Ok, the quickest I can get there is half an hour. I'll see ya then." I said and hung up before she had the chance to answer.
I turned around from my closet and saw Josh looking at me with worry clear on his face. I walked over and wrapped him in my arms.
"I'm sorry baby but I have to go into work, they need me. I don't know what time I'll be able to come home." I explained while rubbing his back.
He nuzzled into the crook of my neck and at that moment the hospital was the furthest thing from my mind.
"It's ok baby, you are needed," he said, "if it's ok I'll just stay here and wait on you to come home."
"I was hoping you would do that, it feels good to know someone is waiting for me when I come home." I said then turned to go to the shower.
I walked downstairs and went into the kitchen to find Josh busy making a sandwich. I stood in the doorway watching and smiled when I saw him take out a paper bag to put it in. I went into the living room to locate my badge and cell phone then returned to the kitchen. I walked up to Josh and wrapped my arms around hit waist and kissed his cheek.
"Mmmmm, you smell good," he said.
"You taste good," I said planting a kiss on his neck. He turned in my arms and gave me a brief kiss on the lips then walked to the counter and brought me my lunch.
"Whatever I did to deserve you, I hope I keep doing it." I said punctuating it with a kiss.
"You better go before I drag you back out to our chair." He said grinning.
"OK, make yourself at home. I'll be home later. Don't wait up it might be late." I said while gathering my things and heading towards the door to the garage.
"Ok, I love you, no go help all those people I'll be waiting for you when you are done." He said and placed a kiss on my nose.
"I love you too, and no skinny dipping in the pool." I said grinning.
"I'll wait for you to do that" he said and with that I was in the car and backing out of the garage.
As I was on my way to the hospital I began to sing along with the radio and before I knew it I had arrived at the hospital. I went in and walked upstairs to the time clock then to the lab to begin what would be overtime for this week.
When I walked into the lab I was kinda surprised because the counter was lined with specimens that needed to be processed and the only person I saw was Sherry. She waved as she walked toward the chemistry lab with a hammer in her hand. I had long since learned to never question anything Sherry did, only nod my head and go about my business.
I placed my stuff in the lounge area and then washed my hands and put on my gloves. It was going to be a long day.
Two hours and 36 out patients later I was sitting outside enjoying a much needed cup of coffee and a cigarette. My mind was wondering and I hadn't noticed my friend James from Radiology set down beside me.
"Ok so what is his name," James said while lighting up a cigarette.
"Josh," I said pulling myself from my reverie.
"It's about fucking time you found a man." He said while laughing.
James was a close friend of mine and we both knew the other was gay. James was with his boyfriend of two years. They shared a house a couple of miles from mine. They seemed to be very content and very much in love. When they first got together I had said those same words to James that he had just spoken to me.
James and I had a habit of calling our friend Alicia a slut but that is a long story. Alicia was nothing close to a slut but it was fun to watch her blush whenever we called her that. I knew I would have to tell Josh this little story whenever I found the chance.
"Ok, now I know I have to meet this man that has you grinning like an idiot." James said while lighting another cigarette.
"What?" I asked confused.
"You must have been thinking about him because you started grinning like a fool." He said while smiling.
"He makes me happy." I said simply.
"I can tell. The light in your eyes is back. The light that I had feared was extinguished long ago; it's good to see it back." James said choosing his words carefully.
"Yeah, it feels good too." I said.
"When do I get to meet him?" he asked while finishing his cigarette and taking a sip from his coffee.
"I will see when he is free and I will have you two fools over for dinner, if you promise to behave." I said grinning and standing to go inside.
"OK, I promise." He said deflated.
"Good, make sure your better half understands that as well." I said swiping my badge to enter the building.
I heard James curse under his breath and smiled inwardly. He returned to continue irradiating people and I went back to the lab to suck some more blood.
Six hours after I had clocked in we had managed to get caught up. It was getting late in the evening and just like every other day our supervisor stuck out head in the lab to tell us she was leaving. I swear I would hit the floor if I ever saw her do a test. How anyone could stand to sit in that hole she called an office for eight hours everyday I'll never know.
Alicia looked over at me and grinned, everybody knew what happened when the boss left. That old adage is true; when the cat's away the mouse will play. So like every other day, when the door closed on her exit, the music started. With the music going we finished up the work we currently had then the door opened and the boss was back.
"Scott, I was wondering if you could work the evening shift for me, Kim couldn't make it today." She asked while Alicia turned down the radio.
"I guess so," I said while making a blood smear.
"Good, see you guys tomorrow" with that she left.
"Wonder what Kim's excuse is now." I said to no one in particular.
Alicia giggled and we continued on with the evening. Many hours and many patients later I was beginning to feel a little tired. I decided to take my lunch and went outside to eat at one of the picnic tables. I took out my lunch one piece at a time. When I had everything out I looked at the napkin and scribbled on it was a short note in Josh's handwriting.
Baby,
Hope you are having a good day. I know you will be tired when you get in just know that my arms are waiting for you. You are my everything.
Love, Josh
Those few simple words gave me enough energy to want to finish my shift and get home A.S.A.P. I began munching on my lunch and folded the napkin and put it in the pocked of my lab coat.
Back in the lab me and Alicia were goofing off as usual but still managing to get our work done. I was doing a urine culture when she asked me if I had a pen.
"Yeah there's one in my coat pocket." I said while streaking the plate.
"What's this?" she asked with a mischievous grin.
"A note from my man," I said nonchalantly, "It was in the lunch he made for me. "
After she finished reading it she was grinning from ear to ear.
"Oh My God, Honey you have got to keep him," she said practically jumping up and down.
"I have no intention of letting go," I said placing the plated urine in the incubator.
"Good, James told me earlier that the light was back. Now I can see why." She said handing me the note back.
"He makes me happy," I said. It was the only words that could describe what it was like to be with Josh and even those fell short.
"Baby, you deserve it."
Alicia is one of my best friends. She helped me through a rough time in college when I was fast heading for a meltdown. She listened to me bitch and moan. I could talk to her about my problems and her to me. We were always giving the other advice whether we wanted to hear it or not.
The rest of the night passed fairly quickly and Alicia and I were just basically just sitting around because it had been a few minutes since we had any work come in so we were reading and chatting. Then the phone rang. It was the new tech. that was supposed to work the midnight shift. She said the words I did not want to hear. She couldn't come in because her son was sick so that left me to fill her place. All of the other techs were going to arrive so that left me to pull the midnight shift in the chem. Lab. I went to the out patient room to call Josh.
"Hi Honey, It's me." I said when he answered.
"Hey babe, When you coming home?" he asked and sounded a little tired.
I melted when he spoke. "Well its going to be tomorrow morning sometime, I gotta pull a midnight shift tonight." I said
"Ohh no you are going to be so tired," He said stifling a yawn.
"I'll be ok babe, you just go back to sleep, I know that's what you were doing." I knew he had been sleeping because when he woke up his voice was a little raspy and ohh so sexy.
"Ok, you caught me; I will see you tomorrow morning." He said.
"Ok, I love you." I said almost tearing up.
"I love you boo," He said softly, "goodnight."
"Goodnight angel," I said and hung up the phone.
I wiped a stray tear from my cheek. It hurt knowing that I couldn't be with him even though we were so close. I knew I was just being stupid and that I should just suck it up and deal but love knows no logic. Alicia chose that moment to come over and sit down.
"It hurts doesn't it?" she asked.
"Yes it does," I said my voice cracking.
"Well it doesn't get easier," she said
"I'm being stupid, I know but I thought we were going to be together today and then all this shit happened and now it will prolly be tomorrow afternoon when I get to see him again." I vented to her.
"Well, love is a funny thing; it is a combination of emotions that makes you feel better than you ever have before. There is passion, contentment, extreme joy, and many others. But with those comes others like sadness, and loneliness. But without them love wouldn't feel half as good." She concluded.
That's one of the things I liked about Alicia, she always made me see things from a different point of view. She knew what it felt like to be apart from someone you care for. Her boyfriend was in another state on business and it had been a couple of weeks since she had last seen him.
I knew it was hard for her because when she speaks of his absence you can read the sadness clearly in her eyes and on her face.
Alicia's shift was over and she gathered her things and left, giving me a hug at the door. It was something we both needed.
I walked to the chem. Lab and began the nightly maintenance on the machines. As I was calibrating the LX the DJ began to speak on the radio.
"Ok we have a request that just came in. It goes out to Boo' who is working late at the hospital. From Angel' to `boo' here is 98 Degrees."
When the first verse began so did my tears.
The loneliness of nights so long A search for strength to carry on My every hope had seemed to die My eyes had no more tears to cry
Then like the sun shine from up above You surrounded me with your endless love. And all the things I couldn't see Were now so clear to me
You are my everything Nothing your love won't bring My life is yours alone The only love I've ever known Your spirit pulls me through When nothing else will do Every night I pray On bended knee That you will always be My everything
By the time the first chorus had finished I had forgotten all about the machines. The only thing on my mind was that at that exact moment my angel was listening to this exact song. For those few minutes while the song played it was as if we were together.
After it was finished I went back to my work attempting to finish it as quickly as possible.
Hours later I was finished with the work and then only thing I had left to do was disinfect the counters but I could care less at this point. I was ready to head out the door. It was 7:45am and almost time for the dayshift to begin. And believe me I was ready for it.
As usual at 8:15 am my supervisor waltzed in the door and looked shocked to see me.
"Scott what are you still doing here?" she asked.
"Well, Carmen called in last night so I had to work midnight in Chem. So here I am." I said flatly.
"Well take tomorrow and the weekend off. I'll see ya on Monday." She explained.
"Thanks," I said while gathering my stuff.
You needn't expect a thank you from her. Never will you get an "Ohhh I appreciate you working" or "you didn't have to do that". She was all business.
I gathered my things and clocked out. I walked out to my car and saw a figure sitting on the hood of my car. As I got closer my heart quickened.
"Josh, what are you doing here?" I asked surprised.
"Well you have been here at this hospital for almost 17 hours and I figured you didn't need to be driving. So I took a taxi over here so I could drive you home." He explained and then stood up and gave me a hug and a deep kiss.
I leaned on him for a minute feeling suddenly exhausted. I handed him my keys and went to get in the passengers seat. The ride home was quick, or I dozed off but when we pulled in the driveway I was awake. We walked into the house and I pulled Josh to me and gave him a kiss.
"I love you angel. Thanks for coming and picking me up." I said
"I didn't want you driving home when you would be so tired." He said leading me up the stairs.
As soon as I was within sight of the bed I collapsed. I was sprawled out on the bed and it felt wonderful. Josh began untying my shoes and then he took off my scrubs. He pulled down the comforter and then picked me up and placed me under it. He then went downstairs and locked up the house and turned out the lights. I heard the door latch and then heard the rustling of clothes. It suddenly got very dark in the room and then once my eyes adjusted I noticed that Josh had placed several quilts over the windows to block out the light. The next thing I felt was Josh snuggling in behind me. Instinctively I rolled back into his waiting arms.
"Baby, I heard your request last night." I said almost asleep.
"Good, I was hoping you would." He said kissing my shoulder.
"I love you angel," I said.
"I love you too, sweet dreams boo." He said then we settled in to sleep.
I was asleep within a few minutes and as I was drifting away I could hear Josh humming. I smiled when I realized he was humming "My Everything". Feeling safe and loved I drifted off to sleep.
To Be Continued...
Ok there it is, I apologize for the long wait I just hope that you guys think that it was worth the wait. I am either going to start writing longer chapters or start posting more frequently. Or at least that's what I hope to do. Let me know what you think.
