Author's Note: Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed Chapter 10. I certainly had fun writing it. I heard from someone about chapter 10 whom I am glad to call a dear friend. She is a loyal reader who has always commented on my story. I love hearing from her and hope she continues to enjoy this story as much as I enjoy writing it. She told me that in Chapter 10 I got my magic back and I am glad that she thought so. I don't know what has happened to me but I feel totally different than I did about a month ago. Everything seems new and I am having the time of my life doing absolutely nothing but sitting on my balcony on the warm nights. But enough about me. The main thing I wanted to say was that this chapter is dedicated to that person. Chapter Eleven is for you Lori.
Chapter Eleven
Josh's POV
I was standing in the kitchen at Scott's mom's house and waiting for everyone else to get out of bed. I was singing lightly as the coffee pot gurgled indicating the much awaited coffee was done. I poured myself a cup and sat down at the bar looking out over the backyard. It was a nice house and it reminded me of Scott. I could easily tell where he got his tastes from. It looked like he had decorated it himself. Everything was bright and airy. The kitchen was kind of small compared to our house but a good majority of it was glass. There was no pool and only a small back porch with a swing. I really liked this house but it wasn't home. My home was with Scott. In our house in Savannah.
I was startled out of my thoughts by a cabinet door slamming. When I jumped and turned I saw Pat standing there.
"Sorry," she said, "I can't get used to this house."
"It's ok," I said softly, "I had the same problems at Scott's."
"I've never seen his house, or his work, his car, anything at all." She said sadly.
"You'd like it," I said, "It reminds me of this house, only bigger."
"Yeah," she said laughing, "Scott never did anything on a small scale."
"You've noticed that too?" I asked.
For the next half an hour she told me stories of Scott growing up. About how he was so curious all the time and wanted to know how things worked. About how he would mix things up in the bathroom like some mad scientist. It was nice to hear those things and they only made me love him more. We were sitting there at the bar drinking coffee and laughing. Then all of the sudden she turned serious.
"Josh, I know you love Scott. I can tell by the way you look at him, the way you act together and most of all the way you act while you are apart." She said.
"Pat, he is everything to me. He is the part of me that I didn't know was missing." I said softly. "Every morning when I wake up I lay there and stare at him wondering what in this world I did to deserve such a perfect angel."
"Honey, you two deserve one another." She said, "He told me some of the things you've been through. Now I know I am in no position to judge but you may have had it a little easier than Scott. And most of what he has been through is my fault."
A single tear was slowly sliding down her cheek and her voice seemed to catch in her throat.
"You know that's not true Pat." I said placing my hand on hers.
"Isn't it?" she asked. "If I had left his father earlier like he begged me to I could have spared him a lot of this shit he went through."
"And he wouldn't have become the person he is today, the man who helps save lives on a daily basis, who would do anything for anyone, and the man I fell in love with." I said with conviction.
She quietly nodded her assent and went to refill her coffee cup. When she sat back down I noticed that she seemed to be in a slightly better mood than she had been in moments before. She took a few sips of coffee before she began to speak once again.
"I have rationalized everything in my mind many times. I have made excuses time after time and up until a few months ago I believed them." She said quietly.
"Well everything seems to have worked out for the best." I said, "You raised a good son and he is someone I am going to be proud to call my husband."
She went to tears from her face and then said, "enough of this, why don't you go wake that fiance of yours while I make some brunch." Then she walked to the refrigerator and began pulling out various types of things in order to prepare brunch.
I placed my coffee cup and the sink and walked out of the kitchen. On my way out of the kitchen I bumped into Scott who had been standing there the entire time.
"Morning Baby," I said leaning over for a quick kiss, "When did you get up?"
"A little while ago," he said leaning over on my chest, "She really likes you ya know?"
"What makes you say that?" I asked rubbing his back.
"Because I've known her all my life, and she doesn't talk about stuff like that with just anyone." He said smiling.
"I really like her too," I said while moving his face to look at me, "besides I don't know what I'd do if my fiancé's momma didn't like me."
He grinned at me then leaned in for a kiss. It was a tentative kiss soft and sweet, it was a kiss of love. Before we could let the kiss go any farther we were interrupted.
"If you two are finished making kissey faces at one another I am hungry," Pat said while smiling.
Laughing we all went into the kitchen to have brunch.
Scott's POV
The remainder of my time visiting was pretty uneventful. I took Josh around to see where I had grown up and where many of the important things in my life happened. Like the place where I got my first kiss, where I went to high school, and most importantly the place where I lost my virginity. He seemed to enjoy himself but at the same time I couldn't help but think that something was on his mind. I decided not to ask him about it because he didn't seem like it was bothering him, he was just pensive sometimes.
It was a clear morning when we set out for the airport to head home. The night before we'd had a big party and we were still kinda tired from it considering we were up half the night just talking and laughing. Not to mention the amount of drinking everyone did, which would explain why it felt like I had someone playing the bongos behind my eyes. No one except my mother had went with us to the airport, because everyone else had prior engagements.
It was relatively quite at terminal considering that it was 7a.m. After a few minutes our flight was called and after a tearful goodbye we walked over to the gate and boarded our flight home. We were sitting there waiting on the plane to taxi out when Josh's cell phone rang. That shrill sound made me want to throw it out the window but he answered it quickly.
I sat there as he talked quietly on the phone. I stared out the window and was almost ready to fall asleep when Josh started talking excitedly to me.
"Hey Baby guess what??" he said quickly.
"You won the publisher's clearinghouse sweepstakes," I said a little sarcastically.
"Close but no," he said with a huge grin, " I sold the house."
"Really?" I asked surprised.
"Yep, all I have to do is sign it over once all the paperwork goes through," he said
"That's great," I said leaning over for a quick kiss, "so I guess this means I'm stuck with you now?"
"Yep, for ever and ever and ever..."
I decided at that moment to stop his rambling with a kiss. It had the desired effect because he sat there dazed for a few moments before starting up again, this time he was a little more subdued.
"And you know what the best part is, we have a little money now." he said like a kid on Christmas.
"Honey, we had a little money about two weeks ago," I said giggling.
"Well now we have $750,000," he said waiting for my reaction.
"Excuse me?" I said.
"That's how much the house sold for." He said calmly.
I sat there stunned for a minute or so and Josh saw this as his opportunity to elaborate on the situation.
"Ya see baby, that house is downtown, which automatically raised the property value. And I've done some renovations to it and what not so that's why it sold for that much. That and my real estate agent is a friend of mine and sold the house to a business and started out asking a million for it and then negotiated down to that much. Now that means that we can have one hell of a wedding." He said.
He had been rambling and to be honest I didn't hear but about half of it because I was honestly in shock. I was so stunned in fact that I had completely missed the plane taking off. Josh was sitting beside me and dozing off and eventually I joined him.
The next thing I knew the flight attendant was shaking me telling me that we had landed. While we waited to exit the plane I noticed Josh was a little more awake than I was. I guess he had slept off most of his hangover, unlike me. We made our way to the baggage claim and then we were off to the house. As soon as we got home I began busying myself making sure everything was just as we had left it. After making sure that everything was ok I went up to our room and began to unpack our luggage.
It was later in the day and our laundry was washing while I was sorting through the mail. Josh had left about an hour ago to run some errands and he had said that he would be back in time for dinner. To be truthful I was pretty bored until the phone rang. I looked at the display and smiled.
"Hey Rick, how was the vacation?" I said answering the phone.
"Hi yourself, it was pretty good but I am glad to be home." He said laughing
"Yeah there is no place like Savannah," I said, "actually Josh and I just got back as well."
"Ohh really, another romantic getaway for the lovebirds," he said with suggestion in his voice.
"I wish, actually we went back home for a while," I said.
"You're kidding," he said slowly, "is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is great, but we have a lot of catching up to do," I said.
"I'd say we do," he said still sounding shocked.
"Well that happens when you disappear off the face of the earth for months without even calling your best friend." I said quickly.
"Yeah I know but I've been really busy and not much time to myself, and then when I went on vacation I just turned off my phone and relaxed." He said.
"Well we need to catch up so get your ass over here," I said forcefully.
"Well I need to ..." he started but I cut him off.
"You need to get over here if you value your balls at all," I said.
"Ok so you win the bitch award for the month," he laughed, "I'll be there in ten."
"K, bye bye now," I said sugar dripping from my voice.
When I hung up the phone I could hear him laughing. I decided to make some iced tea while I was waiting for Rick to arrive. I was just stirring the sugar in when the doorbell rang.
"It's about time," I said opening the door and puling him into a tight embrace.
"It's good to see you too Scott," he said returning the hug.
I didn't realize how much I had missed Rick until now. We went into the kitchen and poured glasses of tea and then went out to sit on the patio. He filled me in on how all his conferences went and all that shit he had been doing out on the west coast. Then we talked about what I had been doing and why I had gone home after all these years. Once we were pretty much up to speed with one another's lives I decided to drop my bombshell.
"So Rick there is a few minor details that I left out earlier," I said knowing it would pique his interest.
"Like what?" he asked trying to play it cool.
"Ohh, just some little things," I said deciding to toy with him.
"Okay," he said prodding me along.
"Yeah, for starters Josh is moving in here," I said calmly.
"Really," he asked, " I don't mean to pry, but are you sure you are ready for this big step?"
"Well considering that I'm marrying the man I decided what the hell," I said waiting for his reaction.
"WHAT!!!!" he yelled while showering me with iced tea.
"Damn, thanks a lot Rick," I said trying to wipe the tea off my face.
"Don't change the subject," he said.
"Josh and I are getting married, and before you say anything, yes I have thought it through and yes I am sure that I want to do this. He makes me happy Rick." I said turning serious.
He studied me for a moment before answering, "I can tell, congratulations babe, I am so happy for you."
He got up and came around to my side to the table and wrapped his arms around me. When we finally broke the hug we both had tears in our eyes. After a few minutes we managed to compose ourselves. We sat back down in our respective chairs and resumed our conversation.
"Ok, I want details," he said grinning.
For the next half an hour I relayed the details of our vacation, and the date on which Josh had proposed.
"... and then after I said yes he slipped this on my finger." I finished reaching my left hand across the table to show him my ring.
"Ohh Scott it's gorgeous," he said admiring the ring.
I had decided to forego telling him about my mini-breakdown but I filled him in on everything else, including Josh selling his house.
"Damn babe I am jealous." He said grinning.
"Well too bad cause he's all mine. Which brings me to my next order of business." I said then paused to take a sip of tea.
"We haven't set a date or anything, but I'm not really worried about that, but I been thinking since you were the one that set us up in the first place that you should get the honor of... that is..." I said trying to find the right words.
"For god's sake Scott just spit it out," he said laughing then picking up his glass to take a drink.
"I was wondering if you would be my best man," I said.
For the second time that afternoon I was sprayed with iced tea and made a mental note the next time I give someone big news to do it without refreshments.
"Scott, I'm honored, but don't you want one of your brother's to do it, I mean they are your family and all." He said
"So are you Rick," I said, "besides if I pick one of them the other will get mad and why do I want a brother, when I can have my favorite sister."
"Bitch," he laughed.
"You know I love you Scott," He said.
"Yeah, and I love you too," I said then moved over to hug him.
After a couple of more minutes passed we broke the embrace and I turned to go sit down when I saw Josh standing there watching us.
"Hey baby," I said walking over to him and giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
"Hey yourself," he said then we walked back over to the table where Rick was seated.
"How are you doin Rick?" he asked him.
"Doin good," Rick said.
"So then why are you tryin to move in on my man?" he said.
Rick looked panicked then began stuttering, "I...I...,"
Josh started laughing so hard I thought he was gonna piss himself. I slapped him on the ass.
"You better behave yourself or I'll cut you off," I said grinning like a madman trying to keep from laughing.
"You wouldn't dare," he said.
"You know me too well," I said laughing.
"I'm sorry Rick I just couldn't resist," he said still smiling and holding me around the waist.
"It's okay," he said laughing, "I'd have probably done the same thing."
"Well baby I'm gonna go in the house and see what kind of trouble I can get into," he said kissing me and wandering off toward the house.
"You dirty up that house and I'll kill you Joshua," I yelled after him.
He just turned and smiled innocently at me then went into the house. I turned to look at Rick who just grinned.
"What?" I finally asked.
"Even when you are yelling at him I can see how much you love him," he said softly.
"What's not to love," I said, "Besides he knows I don't mean it."
"Ohh you mean it and I know you do," he laughed.
"Well maybe a little," I said grinning.
We sat there for a little while and I noticed that Rick had grown quiet and looked pensive.
"We've known each other a long time Scott, and I've never seen you this happy," he finally said, "I would be honored to be your best man."
"As long as I get to be you're best man too," I said.
"If I ever find someone to marry," he half joked.
"Don't worry babe," I said placing my hand over his, "You will."
"Then I guess it's a deal," he said.
He glanced down at his watch.
"Oh shit I've got to get home and get some laundry done. And I've got to be at work in the morning at 7," he said.
"Yeah, me too," I said, "but I've already done our laundry so I just wanna take a nice hot bath and sleep."
"Well you two kids have fun, and don't be late for work." He said as I walked him to the door.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll see ya in the morning Rick," I said.
"Ok night Scott." He said then walked to his car parked in the driveway.
After I watched Rick drive off I closed and locked the door then went off to find my wayward fiancé. I went from room to room trying to find him. I walked through the kitchen and saw the ice cream sitting on the counter melting. I went over to pick it up and noticed that it was my favorite. After placing it back in the freezer I walked upstairs to our bedroom and found him sitting on the bed spooning ice cream in while watching a rerun of something on tv.
"Hey Baby," he greeted me.
"Don't you hey baby me!" I said.
"What?" he asked pretending to be innocent.
"You know perfectly well what," I said crossing my arms.
"Honest baby I don't," he said.
"Josh honey you know I love you more than life itself, and that I've agreed to share my life, my house, and my heart with you. But I've got to draw the line somewhere" I said.
"Umm ok," he said anxiously.
"So you are welcome to anything I own, but stay the hell away from my chocolate chip cookie dough!!!" I said then ran across the room and jumped on top of him.
"Yeah yeah yeah," he said then kissed me deeply.
After we broke the kiss I said, "Well I could be persuaded to forgive you."
"And how could I do that," he said suggestively.
"Give me my ice cream!!" I said laughing.
I grabbed for the bowl but he was too quick for me, after we wrestled around for a while I ended up under Josh with him sitting on my thighs. I watched as he leaned over and picked up the bowl off the nightstand. He didn't say a word but he swirled the spoon around the bowl then brought it to my lips. I allowed the spoon to slide across my lips and closed my eyes as the cold ice cream slid around my mouth. I laid there with my eyes closed enjoying the taste. As I felt the ice cream start to slid down my throat I felt Josh's lips touch mine. He began to deepen the kiss and eventually I felt his tongue slide past my lips.
His lips always tasted so good and that coupled with the taste of the cold ice cream was heavenly. After all of the ice cream was gone from my mouth Josh broke the kiss and began to repeat the process. He continued feeding me the ice cream in his special way until the bowl was empty. Once he sat the bowl on the nightstand he leaned over for a quick peck on the lips then grinned.
"Baby, that was the best ice cream I have ever had." I said.
"So does this mean I am forgiven." He asked like a small child.
"Always baby," I said then gave him a quick kiss, "I am going to go take a quick shower."
He laughed, "Since when did you take quick showers."
"Bite me," I said getting off the bed.
"Don't tempt me babe," he said.
I laughed and walked to the bathroom and started the shower running. After the water had heated up enough I stripped off my clothes and stepped inside. I began washing my hair then lathering up the rest of my body. I stepped out after I had been in the shower for almost half an hour and dried off. I wrapped a towel around my waist and walked out into the bedroom.
"Mmmmm, have I ever told you what a nice view your bed has?" Josh asked me.
"No I don't believe you have," I said grinning.
"Well allow me to express my appreciation for it now," he said.
I laughed and turned around and started looking through the closet. Once I found what I was looking for I dropped my towel and started getting dressed. As I started pulling my shorts on Josh was whistling and catcalling. I slipped on the shorts and then pulled on the robe. It was black silk pajama set that Josh had bought me for Christmas, It came with the matching robe that nearly dragged the floor. I had bought him the same thing only in white. I chose white because it showed off his deep tan. After I had dressed in the shorts and put on the robe leaving it open I turned to see Josh laying there on the bed.
He was looking slightly flushed so I walked over to him and leaned in close for a kiss. It was a sensual kiss and it had the desired effect. When I broke the kiss I heard him whimper so I leaned in to his ear close enough so my lips brushed his ear when I talked.
"Go take a shower," I whispered then walked out of the room.
I heard him grumbling then as I walked down the stairs I heard the water in the shower start running. I went in to the kitchen and decided that I needed something to drink. I fixed myself a glass of iced tea and then went back upstairs to sit on my balcony. It was a warm night here in Savannah and there was a hint of rain in the air. I stood there and listened to Josh humming in the shower and smiled.
Josh's POV
I had finished my shower and was just finishing up getting dressed. I had opted to wear my pajamas that matched Scott's. As I slipped on the robe I glanced out on the balcony and saw Scott standing there. The black silk of the robe was dancing in the breeze and he looked like he was a million miles away. The moon was dancing between the clouds and it cast a soft glow on my angel.
I remembered back to the day when I first saw him. He was dressed in ceil blue scrubs and a lab coat and looked a little worse for wear. His hair was tousled about and his eyes looked dark underneath them. He looked tired and like the entire world was resting on his shoulders, but he still managed to be nice to me. He took a little longer than was necessary to draw the blood because we were talking about various types of things while he was working. That was one of the reasons that made me go along when Rick invited me and I've never regretted it.
I walked over to the window and leaned against the frame. I loved this house and had almost bought it myself except by the time I got around to calling the realtor it was sold. I had never thought of that before but it seems that Scott and I are almost the same person. I couldn't wait until we got married. It was almost April now and we hadn't really thought much about when we would get married. Then it occurred to me...
Scott's POV
I was standing there on the balcony enjoying the nice evening when I heard a voice behind me.
"August 25th," I heard Josh say.
"What baby?" I asked.
"August 25th is when we should get married," he said.
"I didn't think we were going to rush it babe," I said while he walked over to the banister.
"I'm ready," he said looking deep in my eyes.
I stood there looking back at him. I saw all of the things that we have done in our time together, the dates, the quiet evenings at my house, the fights, everything. I thought about the date he had picked. It sounded vaguely familiar and I thought about the time of year. It was in the late part of August so it would be a nice temperature and I also had a vacation coming around that time. It would give us time to get everything done and ... Then it hit me. Josh was still looking at me with a serious expression on his face.
"The day we first met," I said.
I thought Josh's face would break he smiled so big.
"You remembered, " he said.
"How could I forget the first time I saw you boo," I said feeling tears come to my eyes.
"So what do you think about it?" he asked a little impatiently.
"It's perfect baby," I said moving closer to him and wrapping my arms around his waist
He leaned over and kissed me quickly. Then he leaned his forehead against mine.
"We're getting married baby," he said like a little kid.
"I know boo," I said.
Then he picked me up and started spinning me around while he kept saying "we're getting married" over and over again. When he finally decided to stop my head was spinning but it wasn't from Josh, it was because I was getting married in less than 5 months. I started mentally going over all of the things I had to get done before then. I had a guest list to make, a menu to decide on, flowers...
"Scott?" he asked.
"Yeah babe," I said
"You mind putting the wedding plans on the back burner until tomorrow so we can get some sleep?" he said grinning.
He knew me too well sometimes.
"Ok babe, let's go to bed," I said knowing that it would be at least an hour before we got to sleep.
Two hours later we both lay on the bed breathless and I had just lit a cigarette. Josh had decided on celebrating a little longer than usual. He was always insatiable in the bedroom but tonight he almost killed me. He was laying on his side of the bed waiting on me to finish smoking before we went to sleep. That's just another thing I loved about this wonderful man, he never fell asleep right after we made love. I took one final drag from the cigarette and stubbed it out.
After going to the bathroom and brushing my teeth I crawled back into bed and snuggled up to Josh. He was so warm and cuddly. I had left the doors open so we could enjoy the warm night air.
"I love you boo, goodnight," I said after getting nice and comfy.
"Goodnight angel," he said placing a kiss on the top of my head, "I love you too."
Josh drifted off to sleep before I did and no matter what he had told me earlier I drifted off to sleep thinking about the wedding and who I wanted to be there.
To Be Continued...
Finally!!! I just got the inspiration tonight of how to finish it. I have been working so long on this chapter I had to reread it to make sure it makes sense. I hope you guys enjoy it now it's back to studying anatomy.
