Dorence was regretting his decision to visit Trey, as he knew he would be constantly looking for damning evidence and that wouldn't be fair to either of them. Blaming scenarios went through his mind; the bag of questionable content he found next to his backpack; his being tired on minute and full of energy the next; the conversation with the man in the restaurant; seeing Trey walking with his backpack to an upscale part of town. Conceding he could have been betrayed, Dorence acknowledged he misses his conversations with Trey, helping him read every night, but he continued with his book without the aid of Trey. Feeling good about his accomplishments and knowing he had Trey to thank.
Hesitantly, he climbed into the truck to drive the several hours, trying to think of what he might say, questioning if he would say it, as the situation weighed heavy on his mind. Upset and nauseous, he debated whether or not he should turn around and avoid the whole situation, if that's what it's going to be. Controlling his urge to call the number on the business card, he thought it was only fair if Trey told him directly, to what was going on.
With his eyes glued the road, Dorence kept forging forward, his angst got harsher the closer he got to his destination. Gulping when the welcome sign for the college town appeared, he wanted to turn around, heading back to the safety and comfort of his home. Nervously, he drove past Trey's place towards Rebecca May's, with his clammy palms holding onto the steering wheel tightly.
Lamenting while he sat in his truck for a few moments, he found the strength to knock on Rebecca May's door, she greeted him sweetly, invited him in. Seeing the tormented look on Dorence's face, she was worried something significant was wrong, she gave him an embracing hug figuring he would confide in her what he was feeling. Though she thought she knew who the culprit was from his morose demeanor.
With the two alone in her apartment, she asked Dorence if he needed anything to drink, he mentioned water would be fine. While sitting down at the table, she sat next to Dorence handing him a glass, giving him a very concerned look. Seeing the concerned expression on her face, he looked at her teary-eyed saying he drove by his place but just couldn't bring himself to stop in. Standing to calm him, she rested her hand on top of his trembling hand, she stood behind him, wrapping her arms from behind, as she tried to comfort him in her arms.
"It hurts", he muttered, holding onto her hand. Squeezing his hand to let him know she understood, she leaned over to kiss him on the top of his head, she sincerely wished she had the power to make the pain go away for her long-time friend.
Tormented seeing her friend going through his turmoil, Rebecca May comforted him the best she knew how. Having had her own confrontation with Trey during the week, she knew it wasn't the appropriate time to tell him. Feeling betrayed, she understood some of what Dorence was going through.
Reaching for his wallet, he pulled out a business card, proceeding to tell her the story of how this man, as he pointed to name on the card, wanted him to come over after his evening Trey. Choked up, he continued with the story, how this man, as he kept pointing to the name on the card, referred to it as our `business meeting'. Dorence assumed he was being offered compensation to be his companion for the evening. Resting his hand on his other hand, Dorence confessed how it made him feel like a cheap object of desire. That he was nobody.
Tears welled up in his eyes, as he continues about the plastic bag containing powder that fell out of Trey's backpack. Going from exhausted to a very happy mood after using the bathroom, he noticed the white powder by his upper lip, brushing it off twice, and yet Trey seemed so clueless.
Reaching for the card as Dorence handed it to her, she carefully looked it over, Rebecca May gasped as she recognized the name. Suddenly poker faced, she placed the card face down on the end table, she knew of the man, as she heard Peter and Trey talk about him. From the conversations, she knew Dorence was right about offering money for an evening of companionship. Picking up the card from the table, Dorence placed it back in his wallet his hand trembling. Realizing she didn't have to say anything, Rebecca May's face said it all.
With his angst growing, Dorence knew Trey was expecting him, in a quagmire, he didn't want to see him, but needed answers. Knowing not to say anything or give her opinion on the situation, Rebecca May thought Trey should be the person to tell him and not her. Fearing what he was going to hear, Dorence stood up hugging her, trembling as he thanked her, as he held her tight for a moment. Tapping his hand on her hand, saying things will be all right, he confirmed that would be over later as Trey had to work tonight. Placing her face to his chest, she breathed deeply before she looked up smiling at Dorence, saying, she was looking forward to an evening with him.
Hesitantly, he slowly walked to the door, he sighed before opening the door, raising his eyebrows looking at Rebecca May giving her a half attempt of a smile when he opened the door. With his heart in despair, he walked across the street to his truck. Anxiously sitting there a few moments, taking a few deep breaths before he started his truck, looking in his mirror making sure it was safe to pull out into the street continuing his way to Trey's apartment. When he arrived, he sat in his truck, wanting to leave, after taking a few deep breathes, he mustered up enough courage to go see Trey. Looking into the rear view mirror checking his eyes, making sure they weren't red and puffy from crying, he thought he should wait a little longer. Reaching for the truck door handle, his hand shook as he pulled it. Taking more deep breaths, he stepped onto the street, as instinctively closed the door. Jumping when he heard the door slam shut behind him, his nerves already on edge, he sighed, looking both ways before crossing the street. Walking toward the front steps of the apartment building, he fumbled for Trey's buzzer waiting anxiously for Trey to answer.
Relieved that he heard Trey's roommate's voice, Dorence introduced himself, saying Trey was expecting him. When the buzzer sounded, he opened the door slowly ascending the stairs, Trey's roommate, Josh, greeted him at the door welcoming Dorence. Directing Dorence to Trey's room, he hinted that Trey was most likely taking a nap. Tapping on the door, he got no answer, slowly opening the door, not knowing what he might see, Trey was sprawled naked across the bed, snoring. Standing awkwardly in the doorway, Dorence felt a stir in his pants, as he viewed Trey in his natural state. Closing the door, Dorence waited in the living room, not wanting to disturb the man he loved.
Fifteen minutes later Trey's phone was buzzing, when Dorence heard the sound of Trey's voice from behind the closed bedroom door, he was confirming that he was indeed working tonight, quoting some prices, he confirmed he had some candy, and would bring it along before confirming the time and the address.
Dorence heard some jostling behind the closed door, he momentarily feared Trey as he got up and went into the bathroom, "Oh, Shit!" was heard from behind the closed bathroom door as Josh let him know Dorence was waiting in the living room. Jumping from the unexpected sound of slamming doors, Dorence heard the running of water, looking up, Josh went to his backpack, excusing himself as he retrieved what he was looking for. The door quietly opened as Josh mumbled to Trey, the sound of a plastic bag being opened as Josh rushed into the living room, stopping for an instance, as he turned around leaving Dorence sitting all alone.
Looking into the mirror, Trey slapped the cold water onto his face, he held his hand to his nose, inhaling. He quickly stepped into his underwear as he sniffed his underarms. Feeling the false sense of security, he took a deep breath, smiling, Trey greeted Dorence with open arms and full of energy claiming how much he missed him.
Rising from his seat, Dorence pulled Trey into his arms, as he bore a fake smile, hugging him back saying he was a sight for sore eyes. Ignoring Trey's runny nose, he watched as Trey wiped it several times, claiming allergies. Realizing he's standing there in underwear, he asked Dorence to give him a few minutes to get changed. Sitting back down, Dorence waited for Trey, when suddenly Trey's phone rang. When he heard Trey mutter, "Oh! Fuck." Before he closed the door to his room, Dorence just asking himself, why was he there.
Suddenly the doorbell rang, Josh answered the door inviting the guy inside, the guy nervously looked around avoiding eye contact with Dorence, Josh nodded that Dorence was OK, he nervously hands Josh some money. Returning with rolled up cash, Josh hands it to the guy, saying, here is your change. Distracted by the roommate's antics, Dorence smiled, Josh walked back to Trey's room. When the door opened Dorence heard, "But Peter, Dorence is here." then the voices were muffled when Josh closed Trey's door.
Feeling uncomfortable with what he just witnessed, Dorence looked up at the roommate, telling Josh he'll be waiting outside. The roommate nodded, Dorence trembled as he got up and walked out.
After his conversation, Trey went to greet Dorence, his roommate informed him he went outside, Trey wide-eyes; instantly realized Dorence must have heard part of the conversation. Fearing Dorence had left, Trey ran out looking for him relieved when he saw Dorence sitting on the tailgate of his truck. Trey ran over to join him, he sat next to him to ask Dorence what is wrong. Reaching for his wallet, Dorence pulled business card and said, "I saw you go to this address, your friend gave me that card last week when we were at the restaurant and wanted me to visit him after my dinner with you."
With trembling hands, Trey took the business card, recognizing the name, he gulped, not knowing what to say. Not wanting to look Dorence in the face, he looked down at the card, repeating, "I'm Sorry."
With tears streaming down his face, Dorence continued, "What do you keep in your backpack? I saw the plastic bag that fell on the floor, I picked it up and it contained some powder. I also brushed from your face twice last week."
With tears forming in his eyes as well, he wanted to speak, Dorence watch as he tried to form the words, but nothing came out. Trey realizing Dorence knew what he was trying to hide, looked over at Dorence, "I don't want to be this."
Regretting the next question, not sure he wanted to know the answer Dorence looked at him, "A prostitute? A drug dealer? A liar?" as the tears rolled down his face, not wanting to look at Trey.
Trey cried as he nodded his head yes. Validating Dorence deep fears.
Dorence gulped, never feeling so gullible in his life, asked, "Are you going to get help?"
Not wanting to admit it was a serious problem, Trey tried to convince himself, "I will beat it. I plan to spend senior year abroad just to get away from Peter."
Dorence shocked, questioned, "Senior Year abroad? When were you going to tell me? Peter?"
As Trey started to break down, he shook his head in embarrassment, confessing, "He got me started, he gave me the coke and then he started to keep track of how much I used. He asked how I was to pay for it. He informed me that he was pimping me out so I could pay back the money I owe him. But instead of paying the debt off, it keeps growing. As for senior year abroad, I didn't think you would understand, so I didn't say anything. It's Peter, I'm trying to get from, not you."
Trying to swallow what he just heard, Dorence was shocked and asked, "How much do you owe him?"
Trey cried, "Eighteen thousand dollars", as he reached for Dorence hand, "I'm sorry."
Not thinking he actually heard the correct amount, Dorence shook his head, "How?"
Looking back down at the ground with tears flowing down his cheek, Trey tried to explain, but Dorence couldn't make it out through his sobbing. All he heard is, "It adds up."
Dorence closed his eyes, thought for a second before asking, "If I paid it off, would you stop?"
Trey kept repeating, "I'm trying, I'm trying. It's not that easy."
Knowing he still loved Trey, Dorence repeated, "If I paid it off for you would it stop."
Trey broke down, turning his head and placing it on Dorence's shoulder, "With you not here, I just can't." Recalling the same conversation earlier in the week, Trey felt like his world was falling apart. He realized that wasn't the right answer, he was frightened what might happen next.
Not wanting to hear that answer, Dorence looked at him sternly, "If you're not willing to help yourself, then I'm not willing to help you. Come see me, when you're ready. The money isn't the issue, I loved you."
Trey bawled, hearing those words. He knew if Dorence wasn't around, he couldn't stop.
Dorence looked at him, he saw the skeleton of the man he once loved. He realized, Trey wasn't going to help himself. He felt sorry for him, this is not the person he thought he knew. Dorence felt rage.
Sliding off the tailgate of his truck, Dorence trembled as he stood up, he couldn't bring himself to look at Trey. Now he must face the consequences, Trey stood to hold him, but Dorence pushed him away, turning his back as he couldn't look him in the face. The loud thud filled the air as he slammed the tailgate into position, turned to look at Trey in disgust. Getting in his truck, he got his answer, he knew he wasn't returning, sadly.
Standing in disbelief that the only good thing in his life just left, Trey stood there crying wanting to take back it all he did and said. He knew his solution is waiting for him back in the apartment, it will help to ease the pain.
Heartbroken and angry, Dorence sat in his truck quaking in front of Rebecca May's. Hearing a knock on his window, Dorence looked up, seeing Todd's friendly face, Todd's face turned to utter concern. Opening the door to comfort Dorence, Todd saw he was visibly upset inviting him to come inside where it is warm. Crying on his shoulder, Dorence shook his head, Todd helped him out of the truck putting his arm around him as they walked across the street to Rebecca May's apartment.
With the door opening when they arrived, Rebecca May helped Todd with Dorence. They sat on the couch, Dorence shaking, he didn't say anything. With his head in hands as he cried, Rebecca May sat next to him, placing her hand on his shoulder. Concerned, she tried to comfort her heartbroken friend, keeping her secret of her encounter earlier in the week.
Hearing the agonizing sounds of a man sobbing, Rebecca May wiped the tears from his face. Looking up at her in his emotional state, he kept repeating, "He lied to me, he lied to me'' placing his head back into his hands. Rebecca May sat there in silence, pulling him to her bosom, patting his back as she tried to comfort him.
They sat there for forty-five minutes in silence, when Rebecca May heard a knock on her door, she wasn't expecting anyone and when Todd answered the door, Peter stood outside. Saying now is not a good time, Peter pushed his way past Todd. With Dorence on the couch, Todd stood between the two, asking Peter to leave. Not expecting to see the other culprit, Dorence looked up, getting off the couch to leave. Peter intimately tried to physically block the muscular man.
Looking him in the face and poking his finger into Dorence's solid chest, Peter told Dorence, "Stop interfering with my business. He just cost him $2000 and someone is going to pay."
Dorence saw red, and walked up to his face, saying, "It won't be me."
Peter pushed himself against Dorence's body, telling him, "I'm adding to your boyfriend's bill."
Standing chest to chest, Dorence pushed out his chest, sending Peter flying against the wall, "Why don't you leave him alone?"
Dorence took a step forward, Peter frightened by a physical altercation shouted, "Stay away from me or I'll call the cops. You, you, you fucking inbred country bumpkin bastard."
Not believing what he heard, Dorence looked at him and said, "Isn't that ironic. If anything happens to me or Trey, remember you got witnesses", as he stepped closer to Peter.
Peter's eyes got wide and he made a quick dash for the door, Dorence stood there trembling as he shook his head in disbelief.
Crying and frightened, Rebecca May was hiding behind Todd, Todd saw Dorence physically shake, walked up to him, placed his arms around Dorence hoping to calm him down. He explained Peter has some protection and the police won't do anything.
Feeling trapped and betrayed, Dorence just wanted to get out of there. Hugging Rebecca May to calm her down, he apologizes that she witnessed this particular circumstances, he never meant to include her in this spectacle, he turned, broken hearted and ashamed, to walk out the door. As he carelessly crossed the street, he heard the wheels skid when he walked in front of a car to his truck. Looking up and see the terrified look on the driver's face, he waved as quickly got in and drove away. When he calmed down, he realized he was heading for home, and he had some apologizing to do.
It was dark when he pulled into the garage parking lot, his highlights shone the façade, and it made the place look bleak. Feeling bleak himself, he desperately wanted to forget that this drama intense day ever happened. What he realized came to a dreaded fruition, he knew he had to make at least one thing right, out of guilt, he quickly went to his phone and asked for Mark.
He repeatedly apologized to him, crying, he told him he never wanted to hurt him. He knew that's what he did and now he knows how it feels. He didn't hear much of what Mark said, nor did he want to realize he might not ever be with him again, he hung up shedding even more tears. Feeling sorry for himself, he sat in the dark and cried thinking how horrible a person he was. Karma was definitely a bitch.
Being his best friend, his bed beckoned him to join. Laying in the dark, he thought about what he has done to Mark as well as what Trey has done to him; when the door to his apartment opened, startled, he looked up finding Mark standing there. Carrying his duffle bag, Mark walked over to Dorence hugging him. He apologized for leaving the way he did, kissing the side of Dorence face, telling him how he missed him.
Feeling the guilt, Dorence held onto him and kept apologizing. Placing his fingers against Dorence lips to silence him, Mark sat with him in the dark holding on the man he was falling in love with. Having never experienced love nor heartbreak, he was just happy to be holding him and hoping on day Dorence will love him too.
Feeling the comfort lying in his arms, Dorence held onto him knowing he couldn't tell him about his heartbreak, as he knew what he meant to Mark.
The night marched forth as it always does, both were exhausted, Mark suggested they get in bed helping Dorence get undress and climb under the thick warm covers. Naked, Mark climbed in next to him cuddling next Dorence as he lay his head on his chest sniffling and holding back the tears. Feeling Marks' head on his chest, he ran his fingers through Mark's thick hair, realized what he meant to Mark, as he caressed the young muscled bound body, he realized how lucky he was. Though his heartbreak was real, Mark was soothing the ache, Dorence was thankful as he drifted off to sleep.
Dorence tossed and turned, waking throughout the night, sitting up he yelled at someone or something. Occasionally, Dorence jumped out of the bed, walking or running in some aimless direction, muttering incoherently. Patiently, Mark tried to calm Dorence down with each alarming episode. Fearing Dorence might harm himself, Mark would pulled Dorence back into his arms, trying to soothe him with each chaotic outburst. Eventually Dorence physically wore himself out, as well as Mark, tired, Dorence slept in refuge of Mark's embracing arms.
When they woke, Dorence was exhausted realizing he was all sweaty and sore. Turning away from the light of the window, he felt someone next to him. Groggily, he opened his eyes to see Mark and his contagious smile, he leaned over to kiss and thank him for spending the night. Being glad to be waking up next to him, Mark wrapped his arms around and placed his head on his chest. Smelling his masculine scent, Dorence enjoyed his presence and honestly was glad he was there.
With yesterday behind both of them, his heart still ached, Mark instinctively saw it in his eyes. Wanting to be his protector, Mark held onto Dorence not wanting to let him go nor get hurt again.
The morning sun rose higher in the sky, Mark realized the time was slipping away, got up to make breakfast. Wanting to put a smile back on Dorence's face, he tried to entice Dorence out of bed. He did a little naked dance next to the bed, causing Dorence to laugh, Mark was proud. Teasingly wearing only an apron, Dorence was surprised Mark could cook. As his hormones raged in his body, Dorence sauntered over the table, set the table for breakfast for two. Mark announced breakfast is being served sitting down next to Dorence resting his hand upon Dorence's hand. Smiling, they both sat there totally naked and ate, Mark was glad he was Dorence, hoping the Dorence will be inside of him soon.
With the aftermath of breakfast, Mark cleaned up doing the dishes. Since it was a day to be alone with Dorence, he asked Dorence what he wanted to do. Dorence replied with an, "I don't know", Mark suggests they go for a walk. Nudging his lips to Mark's neck, Dorence thought it was a good idea for some fresh air. The sun was shining, the skies were blue, but the temperature was freezing.
Braving the cold, they bundled up and went out back in the cold frosty morning. Mark reached for Dorence's gloved hand holding it as they walked. Enjoying the beauty of the Sunday, Dorence didn't say much, just enjoyed being with Mark.
Thinking back on his childhood, Mark told him how he always looked up to Dorence. He knew as a kid, he was a pest to Rebecca May because he was jealous that she always had his attention. He always wanted Dorence to pay attention to him.
Dorence just smiled, reached over, and messed his hair, saying, "You think you were a pest?"
Mark smiled and said, "I just wanted your attention, I didn't realize back then that I was attracted to you. I just wanted you to talk to me, not tell me to run home. You actually didn't bully me like the other kids did, and for some reason that's why I wanted to be your friend."
Dorence looked at him and asked, "Am I your friend now?"
Mark smiled and squeezed his hand, "I'm hoping more."
Dorence looked at him, "More what?"
Mark said, "You're going to make me say it?"
Dorence looked perplex, "Say it?"
Mark smiled, "I want to be with you."
Dorence teased him, "You want to be my boyfriend?"
Mark looked him the eye, "I'm not gay, but my boyfriend is.", as he leaned in to peck Dorence on the lips before he started laughing.
Dorence retorted, "Honey, you sucked my cock that makes you gay."
Mark laughed, "Only with you."
With his feelings coming to the surface, Dorence cried when he heard the words, and he wrapped his arm around Mark's shoulder to pull him into his side.
Feeling Dorence pulling him closer, Mark was happy as Dorence held him tightly, this was the intimacy he always yearned for. Thoughts of being alone with Dorence, taking walks through the woods, go swimming together, go bike riding together, the normal things a teenager wanted.
Dorence looked at him and said, "Tell you what, I think I could get used to you being around. You're kind of rubbing off on me, kid. That annoying little squirt turned into a strapping, handsome young man."
Mark was happy and said, "You blossomed nicely too! I always imagined being with you."
Wanting Dorence to always be at his side, Mark reached behind Dorence placing his hand on Dorence's hip, holding Dorence against his hip as they walked through the woods.
Getting caught up in the beauty of nature, Dorence heard a cardinal chirping and asked Mark what it was.
Mark beamed back that it was a cardinal. When the blue jay cackled, he asked Dorence what it was.
Dorence replied it was a blue jay.
They both listed to the noises and identified the creatures. Laughing as they listened for sounds, enjoying the time together.
As the morning progressed into the afternoon, Mark was happy to see Dorence smiling as they walked through the woods. Passing a frozen pond Mark pointed it out, saying how he wanted to go skinny dipping with him.
Dorence chuckled, "It's a little cold for that and aren't we a little old."
Mark laughed. "In the spring silly, and you're never too old to go skinny dipping."
Horsing around, Dorence laughed, "You just want to see me naked," as he grabbed Mark from behind, rubbing his hand through his hair.
Mark smiled, "You bet! I'd like that every night."
Dorence conjuring up images of Mark's wet naked muscular body, reached down to adjust himself as he turned to look into Mark's eyes, saying, "I'm looking forward to skinny dipping with you."
The path came to a clearing next to the road, crossing they continued their romantic walk. Feeling the moment, Mark turned, stood up on his toes to kiss Dorence on the lips. Feeling the same for Mark, Dorence kissed him back, thanking him.
Obviously rearranging himself, Mark told him there is more where that came from.
Feeling his spirits being lifted, Dorence smiled and said, "That's good to know, as I have many more for you too."
Momentarily thinking about Trey's betrayal, Dorence realized what he was looking for was standing right next to him. He knew he needed time to heal, but Mark was there for him. Even after the way he treated him.
He quickly thought, he was going to be 24 this year and Mark will be 20. He thought Mark was a little young, but he enjoyed being with him.
The Sun was high in the sky for a winter day, once they got to overlook, they held hands and gazed at the beauty below them. Dorence turned to kiss Mark, Mark held on passionately. He could see the passion in Mark's eyes, feel it in his lips, his soul shone whenever he was with Dorence.
Realizing the day just flew by, Dorence held Mark from behind, inhaling his scent. Mark's shorter stature fit well against his body, he was the protector of this vulnerable muscular creature. He cried a tear of joy before they headed back before the sun sets.
Right before they got to the point where they started today's trek, Mark held onto his arm that was wrapped around his chest, standing near the lake as they watched the sun go down, they held hands as they made their way back to the garage. It was dark when they got back, Mark wanted to make Dorence dinner. Dorence didn't picture Mark as someone who liked to cook, though he didn't have much in the refrigerator or ice box as Dorence called it. He did make a delicious dinner for both of them to enjoy.
Mark asked, "Can I stay the night?" and Dorence told him, "Anytime you want."
Mark replied, "If you're serious you might regret those words."
Dorence smiled, thinking it would be nice waking up to Mark every morning.
Once dinner was over, they both got up to cleared the table, Mark washed the dishes as Dorence dried, taking occasional breaks to kiss. After the Sunday night chores were completed, Dorence got the popping corn, putting it on the stove. When it was all popped he sat closely next to Mark watching the movie. Realizing he wasn't alone, Dorence appreciated Mark and was glad he was there. He seemed to be the angel sent to save the weekend. During the movie, Dorence ran his fingers through the thick hair on the back of Mark's head. When the movie was over, they announced the fresh air tired them out, they headed to bed, and they stripped naked, climbing into bed to cuddle.
Mark leaned in to kiss him, saying, "Hey."
Dorence replied, "Hey" and Mark smiled.
For now, "Hey" was good enough.
Mark turned on his side and Dorence spooned behind him, whispering he was sorry.
