Chapter 9
Justin woke up from his sleep. His 'spider sense' was going off. He looked around carefully and blue met blue in an unblinking stare. Lady Galadriel smiled at him and beckoned him to follow her with a look. Legolas was awake and nodded to show he should follow. Justin kissed him and rose from Legolas's following her obediently.
They descended down a set of steps and entered a garden. In the center of the garden was a stone pedestal with a silver basin on top. Galadriel retrieved a ewer and filled it with water. She looked at Justin with those wise old eyes.
"I am sorry to wake you. But we have much to talk about."
"Such as what?"
Her speculating gaze made Justin shiver inwardly. "I have lived a long life," she said. "And I have not met one whose mind has been blocked to me."
"Are you saying you can read minds like Jean from the X-Men?" he interrupted.
She gave him a blank look then continued on. "I think Iluvatar placed a protection on your mind when he brought you here."
He looked at her hopefully. "If you know why I'm here then you must know if there is a way for me to go home."
She sighed. "I do not know if it is ever possible for you to return home," she said sadly. "The power that brought you here is far beyond than that of my own."
Oh well. It was worth a shot. He might as well begin to think of himself as stuck here.
"Will you look into the mirror?" she asked.
Justin looked down at the basin then back at her. "There is only my reflection."
"The mirror can show many things. Things that were, things that are and some things..." she began to empty the water from the ewer into the basin. "that have not yet come to pass."
"Riddle me this. Riddle me that," he muttered.
"Will you look into the mirror?" she whispered. He nodded. It was not like he was going to die by looking into it. He looked down into the water. The water's surface was clouded over giving it a smoky look.
The water cleared and the image displayed made Justin gasp. There stood his family gathered around a room their eyes wet and red. His mother was leaning against his stepfather looking devastated. The image changed and this time his band mates appeared. They looked sad and nearly a dozen TV cameras were on them. Before he could think about it the image changed again. This time it showed hundreds of people in the street each with a candle in hand and expressions of sadness on their faces.
The water rippled once again. He saw himself standing beside Legolas on top of a ledge. They both were armed with a bow and Elves stood beside them. The image changed once again and it showed Legolas and Justin dressed in all white standing before a person smiling lovingly at each other.
Justin jerked back from the basin as if burned. He ran his hand threw his hair breathing hard. "That was just freaky. Was anything of that real?"
"Yes. Those were actual images from your world. The rest is just a possible future."
He took a deep breath. "I hope we win the battle that is ahead."
"So do the rest of the people of Middle Earth."
Justin turned and walked back the way he came. A million thoughts were racing through his head. The most frequent one was the last image in the mirror. It looked almost like a marriage ceremony.
Justin sat down at Legolas side. The blond looked at him questionably. "Are you alright?"
Justin nodded and tried to put on a smile but failed. Legolas saw this and wrapped his arms around him. "What is wrong?"
"Nothing. I guess I'm just worried about what's ahead of us."
Legolas cupped his cheek. "There is no need to worry. As long as we are together we can overcome anything before us."
Justin's stomach did a flip-flop. He gathered what little courage he had for what he was about to say. "Iloveyou," he said quickly.
"What was that?" Legolas asked leaning closer.
Justin calmed himself and said it more slowly. "I love you."
Legolas gave him that 100 hundred watt smile. "I love you too."
"That's the first time we have said that out loud."
"But it's the words our hearts have been saying to each other since we met." Justin shook his head. "That's one reason why I love you."
"What?" The Elf asked confused.
"You always know the right things to say to me."
"And I know how to take the words out of you also," he said playfully. He leaned down and captured Justin's lips in his own. The feeling of vertigo came over him again. Each time he kissed him was like the first time.
They withdrew from the kiss and looked into each other's eyes. There were no words to be said. The kiss said everything for them. The moment was perfect till Justin let out a loud yawn.
"I guess I need to sleep."
Legolas smiled and gave him a quick kiss. Justin laid down and rested his head on his love's chest. Justin looked up meeting Legolas blue eyed gaze. "Don't try anything while I'm sleep."
Legolas raised his eyebrow. Justin smiled innocently. "You have to wait till I'm awake."
Legolas's musical laugh was the last thing he heard before he drifted off to sleep.
Before long it was time to say goodbye. They couldn't afford to spend anymore days within Lothlorien. Saruman was gathering his forces. By staying here they were putting the Elves in danger.
They stood in the early dawns light in line before Galadriel and Celeborn. They were given cloaks to wear by Elves who went about garbing them. The Elves pinned identical leaf brooches onto their cloaks.
Celeborn was every bit a leader should be. His calm and royal stance made everyone stand straight. "Never before have we clad strangers in the garb of or own people." The Elves finished cladding them and stepped back.
"May these cloaks shield you from unfriendly eyes," he said.
Celeborn turned to Aragorn. "Every league you travel south, the danger will increase. Mordor Orcs now hold the eastern shore of the Anduin."
"Can we find safety on the western bank?" asked Boromir.
Celeborn shook his head. "Nor will you find safety on the western bank. Strange creatures bearing the mark of the White Hand have been seen on our borders. Seldom do Orcs journey in the open under the sun, yet these have done so."
He walked up to Aragorn and handed him a carved dagger. Aragorn unsheathed it and inspected it.
"Le aphadar aen," he said in Elvish. You are being tracked. Justin's eyes widened as his translated it. Legolas saw his distress and squeezed his hand in comfort.
"By river you have the chance of outrunning the enemy to the Falls of Rauros," Lord Celeborn advised.
Galadriel stepped forward. In her hands she held a bow like the ones the Lorien Elves carried. "I have gifts for all of you to help you in your journey."
She handed the bow to Legolas. "My gift for you, Legolas, is a bow of the Galadhrim. Worthy of the skill of our woodland kin." He took the gift with undisguised awe in his eyes.
She smiled and moved on to Merry and Pippin. One of her handmaidens handed her two daggers. "These are the daggers of the Noldorin. They have already seen service in war. Do not fear, young Peregrin Took. You will find your courage." They drew the daggers from their sheaths and looked at them with their mouths agape.
She moved over to Sam. An elf handed her some silver rope. "And for you, Samwise Gamgee, Elven rope made of hithlain."
"Thank you, my lady," He looked at the daggers Merry and Pippin held with envy. "Have you run out of those nice, shiny daggers?" She smiled mysteriously as if she had a secret that only she knew.
She moved on to Gimli. "And what gift would a dwarf ask of the Elves?"
"Nothing. Except to look upon the lady of the Galadhrim one last time. For she is more fair than all the jewels beneath the earth," he finished sheepishly.
She let out a melodious laugh. Gimli made a noise and turned away. "Actually, there was one thing. No, no, I couldn't," he scolded himself. "It's quite impossible. Stupid to ask."
"What is this impossible thing you ask of me?"
He looked at her with wide eyes. "Would the lovely lady of light do me the honor of letting me have but one golden hair from her head."
She smiled softly and plucked not one but three hairs from her head. He accepted the gift reverently. She moved over so she stood in front of Justin. A handmaiden gave her a wrapped bundle. She handed it to Justin. He accepted the gift and unwrapped it. Nestled inside of it was a magnificent sword. He unsheathed it.
The blade was shiny and unmarred. It had writing on both sides in Elvish. It said, 'In the worthy's hands, light shall come to defend.'
He looked at her grateful. This was a great gift. "Thank you."
She nodded and went to Aragorn. "I have nothing greater to give, than the gift you already bear." She touched the Evenstar around his neck. It was Arwen's last gift to him. Her symbol of immortality. "for her love, I fear the grace of Arwen Evenstar will diminish." She said the last part in Elvish.
"I would have her leave these shores, and be with her people. I would have her take the ship to Valinor."
"That choice is yet before her. You have your own choice to make, Aragorn. To rise above the height of all your fathers since the days of Elendil, or to fall into with all that is left of your kin." She placed her hand on his shoulder.
She stepped in front of Frodo. The last person in the company. "Farewell, Frodo Baggins. I give you the light of Earendil," she handed him a glass vial filled with a clear liquid. "Our most beloved star. Namarie."
She kissed the top of his head. "May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out."
The Elves had spared them boats for them to travel down river in. They were white and their paddles resembled leaves.
The Fellowship was almost ready to set off. They just had to finish putting the supplies the Elves gave them on board. Legolas put some packets on board the boat Merry and Pippin sat in.
"Lembas," he said recognition. He began to explain its significance to Justin and the two hobbits. "Elvish waybread. One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man."
Merry and Pippin smiled and nodded as he walked off for more packages. "How many did you eat?" Merry asked Pippin. Justin overheard the conversation. "Four," he burped. Pippin nodded picking his teeth.
Justin laughed and walked off catching up to Legolas. "Honey, I think we might need more of that wonder bread. Whoever made it didn't take into account the stomachs of hobbits."
Legolas laughed realizing what he meant. "I think you may be right."
Suddenly he lost his smile as Haldir approached them. "Ah, I hoped to see you before you set off," he said only looking at Justin. Legolas narrowed his eyes. The other Elf had been doing that for the past couple of days. He obviously had his eyes set out for Justin.
Justin didn't notice the Elf's admiring gaze. In his line of work you learned to tune out the gazes people shot you. They start to get to you in different ways. "I guess this is goodbye then."
"Not goodbye. I'm sure we will see each other again."
"Not likely," Legolas said some of his anger entering his voice.
Justin spun around and looked at Legolas with a weird look. He had never seen him even remotely angry before. Haldir sensed the other's emotion and quickly bid them a farewell.
Justin turned to Legolas and crossed his arms. "What was that about?"
Legolas shrugged and looked at the ground. "Nothing," he mumbled.
"I don't think it was nothing. If I didn't know better. I would say you were Jealous."
Two tiny pink dots graced Legolas cheeks. "Maybe. A little."
"Or a lot," Justin clarified. Legolas looked up. "I am sorry. It just came so suddenly. He was looking at you like I wasn't even here."
Justin shook his head and smiled at him. "Las, I didn't even notice his looks. I only have eyes for you."
Legolas smiled. "Really?"
Justin rolled his eyes. "You know its true. Don't play coy. I love you Blondie." They leaned their heads together and met in a heart-stopping kiss. The sound of a voice clearing their throat made them look up. Justin sighed and leaned his head onto Legolas shoulder. Aragorn was standing in front of them.
"And the bitch is back," Justin said his voice muffled.
"We need to get going," said Aragorn. "And I'll pretend I didn't hear your comment Justin."
Justin looked up anger flashing in his eyes. "You don't have to pretend."
Legolas sighed and placed his hand over Justin's mouth. "We're coming Aragorn." The Ranger walked off leaving them alone. Justin looked up into Legolas's eyes. He put on his most innocent cute expression.
"What?"
