Chapter 13
The company settled down inside the Great Hall. Theoden and Gandalf wore grave expressions. They had just returned from visiting Theoden's sons grave. With them they brought two children who had escaped from a massacre of their village. The kids were a girl and a boy whose names were Freda and Eothain.
Eowyn, whose uncle was King Theoden, tended to the children as they ate at the large table. Eowyn's brother turned out to be the leader of the riders they met on their way to Rohan. His name was Eomer and he was next inline for the throne since Theodred, son of Theoden, was dead.
Everyone listened in horror as the kids told their story. It was horrible to believe that people would kill unarmed women and children.
Eowyn bowed her head in sadness. "They had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the wildmen are moving through the westfold, burning as they go. Rick, cot and tree."
"Where's momma?" asked the little girl.
Eowyn quickly ran her fingers through the girl's hair in comfort. "Shhh..."
Justin felt his heart reach out to the girl. He hoped that their mother got away safely. The woman was truly brave to send her kids away not caring about her own safety.
"This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. All the more potent for he is driven mad by fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on. Draw him away from your women and children. You must fight," Gandalf said to Theoden.
Theoden looked as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. He had to make a decision that would affect every one in his kingdom.
Aragorn nodded his head agreeing with Gandalf's wise words. "You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Eomer is loyal to you. His men will return and fight for their king."
Theoden shook his head angrily. "They will be three hundred leagues from here by now. Eomer cannot help us. I know what it is you want of me. But I will not bring further death to my people. I will not risk open war."
"Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not," replied Aragorn evenly.
Theoden narrowed his eyes at Aragorn's tone. "When last I looked, Theoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan."
Justin nodded. "That's what I thought too," he muttered non-too quietly. He looked to his left to see Boromir covering a smile. Legolas sharply elbowed him in his side.
"Ouch!" Justin cried in pain.
He snapped his head in Legolas's direction rubbing his side. The blonde elf gave him a meaningful look. It clearly read, 'behave'. Justin pouted and nodded his head. Legolas gave him a small smile and they turned back to the conversation.
"Then what is the King's decision?" asked Gandalf finally.
"We flee," Theoden said simply.
After the decision was made everyone began gathering his or her things to leave. Hama, captain of the King's guard, was shouting out the king's orders to everyone near.
"By order of the king, the city must empty. We make for the refuge of Helm's Deep. Do not burden yourself with treasures. Take only what provisions you need."
People were running every which way gathering things. Everyone was moving at a frantic pace. Gimli humphed and looked at the people disdainfully.
"Helm's Deep! They flee to the mountains when they should stand and fight. Who will defend them if not their king?"
Aragorn sighed heavily. "He is only doing what he thinks is best for his people. Helm's Deep has saved them in the past."
Justin didn't know what the hell they were talking about. Personally he thought Theoden was making a good decision. Everyone else seemed to think the people were going to meet their downfall.
"What is Helm's Deep?" he asked.
Boromir explained. "It's a great coomb with lots of caverns behind it. It lies in the northern valleys of the White Mountains. It is said to very formidable and impossible to break into. Theoden wants his people to take refuge there in hopes that they will be safe."
"Okay, so it's like Fort Nox," said Justin. Seeing clueless looks he sighed and explained. "In my world there is building where we store all our gold. No one in history has ever successfully broken into it. It's impossible."
Gandalf leaned heavily on his staff. "There is no way out of that of ravine. Theoden is walking into a trap. He thinks he is leading them to safety but what he'll get is a massacre," he said sadly. "Theoden has a strong will but I fear for him. I fear for the survival of Rohan. He will need you before the end, Aragorn. The people of Rohan will need you. The defenses have to hold."
Justin didn't really see why Gandalf was relying on Aragorn. Sure he didn't like the Ranger one bit. But what could one man do.
Aragorn looked at the people determined. "The defenses will hold."
Gandalf seemed to look inward for a moment. "The Grey Pilgrim. That's what they used to call me. Three hundred lives of men have I walked this earth and now, I have no time."
Gandalf looked at all of them once more. He turned to Justin and smiled softly. "Remember what I told you young one. Your power is in your voice. Don't be afraid to call upon it."
A ray of light hit Justin's sword catching Gandalf's attention. The man blinked in surprise as he recognized the blade. "The Dawnbringer," he said breathlessly.
"You've seen this sword before," asked Justin curiously. "It was a gift from Galadriel." Justin unsheathed the sword handing it to Gandalf.
The wizard gripped the blade's handle and turned it over inspecting it.
"It has been many years since I have seen this sword. It once belonged to one of the old great kings." He handed it back to Justin carefully.
"The sword is very powerful. In a time of great need its power will come to you."
Justin wanted to ask him what he meant but he could tell that the wizard wouldn't tell him. Gandalf was wearing one of his mysterious smiles. That meant he wouldn't get an answer from him no matter what.
The wizard turned his gaze to Aragorn. "With luck my search will not be in vain. Look to my coming at first light of the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East."
"Go," said Aragorn.
Gandalf whistled and Shadowfax came galloping from nowhere. Gandalf jumped onto the horse's back and rode out of sight.
"He's going to go find Eomer isn't he?" questioned Boromir.
Aragorn nodded. "Yes. We just have to hold off the enemy till he gets back."
Legolas and Justin walked the halls of the castle by themselves. Gimli and Boromir were helping people pack. And Aragorn went off to go and find Theoden.
Legolas reached his hand out and slipped it into Justin's. "I fear we will not have much to time to be alone together for a long time," said Legolas.
Justin stopped and turned to him. "We'll just have to make some time."
Legolas smiled slyly. "I wouldn't say no to that idea."
Justin laughed and put his arms around Legolas's waist and pulled him into a kiss. They both felt an electric tingle as their lips met together. They moaned growing deeper into the kiss. They only separated because they had to come up for air. They broke apart each breathing deeply.
They leaned into each other and rested their foreheads together. Legolas gasped as he looked at Justin. The singer's eyes were glowing a vibrant blue. Desire and lust was swarming around his gaze.
"Justin your eyes are glowing!"
Justin's eyes widened. "What? They are?"
"Wait. They're returning to normal now," said Legolas, watching the glow recede and Justin's normal sky blue eyes appear.
Justin smiled wickedly. "I guess you just have that kind of effect on me Blondie."
Legolas met his smile with one of his own. "You want to know what kind of affect you have on me. I'll give you a hint," he said, leaning close and whispering the last part in his ear.
Legolas leaned back and watched as Justin's face turned bright red. "Hmmmmmmm . . . I wonder how far that blush goes."
Justin laughed so hard that tears fell down his cheeks. He got control of himself and looked at Legolas with a large smile. "You have been hanging around me way too much. I think I've corrupted you."
The people of Edoras, the chief city of Rohan, were ready to go quickly. Justin had to admire these people. In his world people would take the chance to begin looting and start a riot. But these people moved quickly and orderly out of the city.
The Fellowship walked near the front of the pack of people. Justin and Bormir noticed that Eowyn walked especially close to Aragorn. As usual Gimli was talking away about Dwarves. Eowyn was listening politely to his ramblings.
"How come many people don't see any women Dwarves?" asked Eowyn.
Legolas and Justin smiled at one another. Merry had once asked the question before while they were travelling through the mines of Moria. "It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, they are often mistaken for dwarf men."
"It's the beards," whispered Aragorn, gesturing with his hand.
Everyone smiled and didn't laugh as not to hurt Gimli's feelings. Justin's eyes widened as he looked up at Aragorn and Eowyn. The two were trading glances with each other out of the corner of their eyes.
"That slut," Justin whispered quietly. Legolas was the only one who heard him only because of his keen sense of Elf hearing.
"What are you talking about Luv?"
Justin pointed discreetly to the two. "Aragorn has a thing for the blonde."
Legolas followed his finger and didn't see anything. "What? They're acting normal to me."
Justin sighed and rolled his eyes. He patted Legolas's arm. "Never mind Las. Maybe I'm just imagining it."
Legolas nodded and looked ahead looking for signs of trouble. Justin loved Legolas a lot but the Elf could never pick up subtle hints. So Justin turned to his good buddy Boromir and pointed out his observations.
Boromir saw the subtle flirting. "I hope Aragorn doesn't make a mistake that could hurt Lady Arwen."
Justin shrugged his shoulders. "Aragorn's a bastard, scumbag, maniac, tightass, and psychopath, but he's no dog. As long as he's with Arwen, he won't try anything."
"How can you tell?" pondered Boromir.
"He's clean like that. You know like a Brady or an Osman. He probably doesn't even believe in having sex before marriage."
Justin sighed as he saw a light appear in Boromir's eyes. That light only appeared when Boromir was going to make a dirty joke.
Boromir smirked. "So, speaking of sex. Is Legolas any good? How big is his--"
Justin swatted him on the back of his head before he could finish. "That's none of your business," he said, blushing heavily.
Justin moved closer to Legolas catching the tail end of Gimli's sentence. "And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women. And the dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground! Which is of course ridiculous."
"Whoa!" Gimli shouted as the horse took off with him on it. He galloped on the back for a bit before he lost his balance and fell off.
The company laughed while Eowyn ran to go and help him up. "It's alright! It's alright. Nobody panic," Gimli said loudly. "That was deliberate. It was deliberate."
"Deliberate my ass," laughed Justin, helping Gimli back on the horse.
"I didn't know Dwarves were such jokesters," Legolas chuckled.
Gimli humphed and crossed his arms. It wasn't long before he started on rambling about Dwarves and their greatness.
They rested for the night and set off again in the morning. The people of Rohan awoke early with no complaints or arguments. A pair of riders, Hama and another man went ahead to scout for trouble.
Suddenly a scream and shout was heard from up head. A warg scout appeared above them upon a hill and attacking Hama, killing him. Legolas immediately came to the rescue, shooting with his bow and finishing him off with a knife.
Justin and Boromir stood side by side drawing their swords. Legolas turned to Aragorn his eyes troubled. "A scout!"
King Theoden rushed to front of the group. "What is it? What do you see?"
"Orcs! We are under attack!" shouted Aragorn.
Legolas appeared by Justin's side with his arrows drawn. Justin quickly kissed him before the Orcs appeared. Legolas looked at him and smiled tenderly. "I love you," he said quickly.
"I love you too," replied Justin.
