Chapter 10
After the talk with Brad's mom, I was exausted. I woke in the morning to feel Brad gently stroking my hair. I turned over to kiss him. I said, "Good Morning beautiful." (Kiss) Brad said, Good morning sexy." (Kiss)
I blushed and smiled. We lay ther in bed for a while till I remembered what Mrs. Fisher said. I suddenly felt really uneasy. Brad noticed this. He said, "What's wrong babe? Is it Aaron?"
I said, "Brad, there is something serious we need to talk about. You're probably going to freak out when I tell you, but you're going to find out anyway."
Brad said, "Dave, If you cheated, please don't tell me about it. I don't want to know."
I said, "Oh honey. I would never hurt you like that. This is a bit more serious than that. We should go downstairs. I don't want to disturb Aaron."
Brad said, "Why? Am I going to want to scream or something?"
I got up off the bed and walked to the door. I motioned for Brad to follow me. We walked down to the family room and sat down.
I said, "Brad, Hve you thought about what we would do if we were ever discovered?"
Brad wearily said, "I'm really not ready for people to know. I think I might try to deny it. My parents would totally freak out if they knew. They'd kick me out for sure. We've been so careful. Nobody saw us did they? Did they?
I chuckled uneasily at that. I had to find an easy way to break it to him. Brad looked really scared, and was quite pale.
I said, "Theres no easy way to tell you hon. Somebody did see us. It's ok though....." Brad passed out and fell to the floor. I ran into the kitchen and got a toewll and wet it. I also got him a glass of water. I held him in a sitting position and leaned him forward. I put the towell on the back of his neck. He started to come around. I held him till he could sit up on his own. He looked at me with fear in his eyes. He almost whispered "Who saw us? Was it somebody from school?"
I said, "Before you go off and faint again, calm down. The person who saw is accepting. They had their suspitions, and it was confirmed when we kissed. So, there is no denying it. You have to promise me you won't scream or pass out on me if I tell you."
Brad nodded weakly, and I took his hand. I said, "We weren't too careful yesterday morning. We were lucky to escape being discovered by the maid. However we weren't so luck here. Your mom saw us kiss while we were playing 'Doom'.
Brad said, "Oh my god. My life is over. I might as well just go and kill myself. I'll just spare them the trouble."
I raised my voice a little at first, but quieted down. "DONT YOU EVER talk like that. You mom and I talked last night. She is the only one that knows. She said she suspected for a long time. She really started to think something was going on when you started spending every waking minute with me. We didn't help matters any by looking at each other the way we do." I hugged Brad to me, and he started to cry. I couldn't help it. I cried right along with him. We held each other till we heard him mom comming down he stairs. She walked by us on her way to the kitchen.
Mrs. Fisher came in with a cup of coffee, and sat down. She said, "I take it you told him about our talk?" I said "I just barely managed to. He fainted when I told him we were seen. I really don't think this is a good time right now. We need to talk about this privately first."
Brad said, "If she knows, we might as well get it out of the way." Brad turned to his mom. "Well, I was trying to avoid this till college. Mom, I'm gay. It's not something I chose, It's just the way things are." Brad sat there just looking at the floor. A few minutes passed before anything was said.
Mrs. Fisher said, "It's going to take us a little while to get used to, but we've suspected for a while. Your father and I will still love and support you in whatever you do." She turned to look at me. "Do you think your father would react badly?"
I said. "He has never spoken highly of gay people. I think it would be better if he didn't know. He travels for work a lot, so it shouldn't be hard to keep it from him."
Brad said, "I really don't like the idea of anybody knowing. It's bad enough that that you know. I don't want you telling everybody mom. That is my choice. If you tell anyone, I'll leave, and you will never see me again"
With that he got up and walked back to his room. Brad's mom looked at me and said, "I don't see why he is so upset by this. I do think his family has a right to know."
I sprang up to look at her. I had never falt so angry with someone. I said, "How would you like it if someone went around telling your most closely guarded secrets. You would feel betrayed. Think about that before you destroy your son's world. You have had my respect so far. I hope that it wont ever change."
I went to Brad's room to see him sitting at his desk. Aaron was still sleeping. We talked quietly so we wouldn't wake him. I told Brad what I said to his mother. We talked about us. Brad and I decided to keep our relationship a secret as long as possible. We decided to also keep our displays of affection limited to when we were alone, or around Aaron, because he wouldn't tell. We even managed to work out our own little way of being close without anyone suspecting. Brad came up with a tough one though.
He said, "What about girlfriends? I mean what if someone asks if we are seeing someone?"
I said "That's an easy one. I had to deal with it before. We just say that they go to a different school. When we're not around, they will just assume we are with them."
Brad said, "You're a genius dude. I would have choked on that one."
I said,"You would have choke huh? I could give you something to choke on" I laughed and gave him a shot to the arm.
Brad laughed and gave me a kiss. He said, "Not in front of the str8t boy babe. Besides, we need to deal with him first."
I said, "I guess you're right. All we can do is just be there for him. I just don't want him to get lost in his greif."
Brad said, "Let's just try to keep him active. If he keeps busy, he won't have the time to feel bad."
I said, "We can try that, but have to remember that he lost one of the most important people in his life. We should wait for him to come around. Until then, lets just do what we've been doing."
Brad nodded in agreement, and we went about our daily routines. We went down to have some breakfast, and Mrs. Fisher wanted to talk to us again.
She said "Brad, David said something to me that made me think for a while. I had a friend who I used to trust with my most cherished secrets. One day we had a fight, and ended our friendship. She went around and told people all the stuff I swore her to secrecy about. I was deeply hurt. My secrets weren't quite on the level of yours, but secret all the same. When you are ready to be more open, we can talk about it then. Until then, this will be the last time we discuss it. Deal?"
Brad hugged his mom, and we had a normal breakfast. After breakfast, I had to go home to change, and wait for my dad's call. When I got home, ther were several messages on the machine. I returned a few calls, then brought the cordless with me to shower and change. Just as I finished drying off, dad called. I told him all about what happened yesterday. He said he would be comming back soon, and would help the Welshes any way he could. I told him about Aaron, and he said I was like that for a while. He told me that he would probably be crying for a few days. That was a no brainer. We talked for a few more minutes about the usual stuff I do when he is out of towm. Dad asked me about the party. I thanked him on Brad's behalf, and scolded him for making it a new laptop. He laughed, and said he got a really good deal because it was a promo. We talked for a few minutes more about general stuff, then hung up.
I busied myself for a few minutes cleaning my room. I hadn't bothered to clean it in a few days. When I finished up, I went back over to Brad's house. When I got there, Mr. Fisher was back home. He gave me an odd look, and told me that Brad told him. He seemed uncomfortable discussing it. I told him that Brad and I decided we weren't going to discuss it till we were ready, and I refused to discucc it further. He was upset at first, then said it was our decision. I thanked him for understanding. I excused myself and went up to Brad's room. Brad was sitting, talking with Aaron. He was at least talking today. He still looked like hell. Who wouldn't? We tried to keep the conversation away from what happened to his father. Aaron seemed to be handling things well. We sat quietly for a while till Aaron spoke up.
He said, "I really don't remember much after I got to the hospital. How did I get into these clothes?"
I said, "I couldn't stand seeing you wearing the clothes you were in. Brad and I took you to the doctor's lounge and cleaned you up. I hope you're not upset, but we had to throw away your clothes. They were well beyond cleaning. I had to lose my shirt too."
Aaron said, "I don't think I would have wanted them anyway. I just want to forget about the whole thing, but I cant. My dad is gone. All the things I wanted to share with him will never happen." Aaron was crying. He had tears streaming down his face, but he managed to keep it together. "It all happened so quickly. The guy just walked up, and the next thing I knew, I was holding him in the parking lot." Aaron started crying really hard. We moved to his side to comfort him. He was crying so hard, he reminded me of a small child. He burried his head in Brad chest, and cried. Aaron was shaking from his crying. Mr. Fisher heard the commotion and came in to check on us. I looked up and noticed him in the doorway. I motioned for him to come in. He came in and sat next to me on the bed. We sat ther taking turns saying what little we could to try and settle him. Aaron cried for over an hour. Aaron just clung to Brad like a small child. He eventually cried himself out. Aaron saw Mr. fisher in the room and immediately went to him. Mr.Fisher held Aaron like a small child. He gently rocked our friend calming him like only a parent could. Mr. Fisher motioned for us to leave them alone for a few minutes. Brad and I walked out into the hall. Brad hugged me tightly.I held him till he felf confident enough to speak.
He said, "Your dad told me you were like this when your mom left. This must be bringing back some pretty bad memories."
I said, "I've pretty much dealt with it. I still have trouble on the holidays, and when I need to talk to someone. My dad tries, but he isn't exactly a sensitive guy."
Brad said, "It tears me up just knowing he's suffering like that. I just wish ther was something we could do for him."
I said, "All we can do for him is be a friend, and be there when he needs somone to talk to."
I hugged Brad and said we should give them some time to be alone. We walked downstairs to the kitchen. Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Wels were sitting down talking. Brad and I got a drink, and sat down with them. We sat next to each other, and sat quietly listening to the conversation. I could tell Mrs. Welsh was dealing with this better than Aaron was. I suppose all those years in court made her a little tougher. She looked over at us and stared for a minute
She said, "I just wanted to thank you for helping Aaron last night. I can only imagine what it must have been like for you boys. Donna told me what you did. I don't think I could have done it."
Brad said, "We just did what any friends would do. Dave did the hard part though." Brad took my hand under the table and squeezed. "He's the one who cleaned him up. He got Aaron undressed, and into the shower. Dave had to strip down to his boxers and get in with him. Dave just went to work washing him up. I don't think I've ever seen him so serious."
Mrs.Welsh said, "I don't know what to say. You guys did more than what any friends could be expected to do. Thank you for doing everything you've done."
I said, "We don't need to be thanked for doing the right thing. Just knowing that we were able to help is enough. If there is anything else we can do to help, don't be afraid to ask. That's what friends do for one another."
Mrs.Welsh nodded, and thanked us again. We talked about the arrangements to be made. She asked if we would consider being pall bearers. We said we would think about it. Mr.Fisher came down with Aaron, and asked to speak to us alone. We followed him into the den, and he closed the door. He sat down, and asked us to do the same.
He said, "Aaron is in pretty rough shape. I think it would be best if he had some time to be with the people closest to him. I know you boys have been ther for him, so you should probably continue." Mr.Fisher looked at me, and said "I think I owe you an apology. I was ready to light into you about a few things after I spoke to my wife this morning. I wanted to blame you for Brad's revelation to her. I wanted to have it out with you, but you refused to argue with me. You just went right on with the most important thing at the moment. I'm glad you did. My wife wanted to slap me. Donna told me how you were the one to keep it together. I know how tough it must have been for you. She told me how you were there for Brad when I couldn't be."
I said, "I really don't need an apology from you or anyone else. You react the way you do, because that's the way you are. As far as being ther for him, I would have been ther regardless of your presence. That's what you do when you love someone. You share their pain. Aaron is my friend too. I kept it together, because they needed to see someone stable. I don't ever want to have to do that again."
Mr.Fisher said, "I'm proud of the both of you for doing what you did. This is all a bit much for me to handle all at once, so I'm just going to ask that you give me some time to get used to this."
Brad said, "We decided to keep our relationship away from you regardless. neither of us are willing to come out right now. I also have one more thing to say, then the discussion about us will be over. If you in any way tell ANYONE, you will lose me forever. I will tell people when I'm ready. Not you. Am I clear on that?"
Mr.Fisher nodded, and we changed the subject. We talked for a few more minutes about Aaron, and we excused ourselves. We walked back out to where the ladies were. I noticed Aaron sitting, looking out into the back yard. I walked up behind him and wrapped my arms around him. He looked over his shoulder and smiled weakly. Brad came up and put a hand on his shoulder.
I said, "Do you mind if we steal this boy for a while? I think he could benefit from a few hours in the pool. He also needs to eat, so I'll make him lunch."
Aaron said, "I'm really not up to it guys. You go ahead without me. I'm not hungry anyway."
I said, "I don't remember asking the boy for his opinion in the matter. Did any of you hear me ask his permission?"
There was a chourus of "I didn't hear anything". I said, "It's settled then. Come along young man. You could always try to argue, but we'd just drag you kicking and screaming. Some come peacefully before we have to tickle you till you wet yourself."
That managed to get a small grin out of him. We said our goodbyes, and set off for my house. We had a light lunch, because it was so hot that day. Aaron barely managed to touch his food, but we got him out for the day. We didn't manage to see Aaron again until the day of the funeral. We had school, and his family came to help out. If you can call it helping. To me, it looked like they were trying to get something for themselves. I can't stand it when people do that. The day of the funeral, I went over to check on Aaron and his mom. I walked into an argument between Mrs.Welsh and her sister in law.
I said, "Aaron, What's going on here?"
Aaron said, "She wants something that belonged to my dad. Mom told her to wait till after. She won't even wait till we..." Aaron started crying again. Aaron cried into my suit. I was getting angrier by the minute. I calmed Aaron down, ans said, "You go wait in your room. I'll be up in a minute." Aaron nodded and went to his room.
I walked into the kitchen where they were. I saw Mrs. welsh crying while that bitch was berating her. I don't know what came over me. I stepped between the two of them.
I said, "ENOUGH. I come here to comfort two of the most important people in my life, and I find you spaeking to her like this."
She said, "This is a family matter. Why don't you just go home."
I said, "You can screw with me all you want, but The Welshes are off limits to you. I want you to leave. The have to do what no family should have to do today. I will not under ANY circumstance allow you to cause them any pain."
She said, "What are you going to do drag me out. You don't have the balls."
I grabber her arm in a vice like grip. She winced in pain. I kept my grip as I walked he out to her car. I opened the door, and put her in. I shut her door and bid her a good day. I walked back in and went to Mrs. Welsh.
I said, "I'm sorry for having to do that. This day is hard enough for you. Her behavior was shameful, even for family. I just have my dad, so my friends are everything to me. I just didn't want to see you suffer any more than you had to."
Mrs. Welsh said, "I understand. I was about ready to toss her out too. Thank you."
I hugged Mrs. Welsh, and she chuckled a little. I pulled back unsure of was brought it on.
She said, "You should have seen the look on your face when she said you didn't have the balls to. I thought you were going to punch her. I thought walking her out to her car was a nice touch."
I said, "I couldn't have her thinking I'm not a gentleman. Now could I? Besides, The only reason I didn't smack her is because she's your family. That, and I will never hit a woman. I wanted to, because she made Aaron cry though. I just kind of snapped. You're and adult, but Aaron is a kid. He deserves better."
That got me another hug. We talked for a few more minutes before I went up to get Aaron. He was trying get his tie on. I pushed his hands away and tied it for him.
Aaron said, "You do this for all your friends?"
I said, "No. Just the ones I care about. I don't go around playing bouncer for just anybody."
Aaron laughed a little and gave me a hug. I made sure he would be ok, then went over to Brad's. We went to the service with his family. The service was pretty sad. I didn't have any idea how many lives he touched. There were a lot of people who got up to say things about him. Brad cried a lot during the service. Aaron did much of the same. We got together after the service to talk. Mrs. Welsh looked like she was all cried out. She looked older somehow. I spent some time just listening to the storied being told about the late Mr.Welsh. We weren't that much different in the way we looked at life. I kind of regret not spending more time getting to know him. I thought there would be more time. It just goes to show, you never know when you will lose the opportunity to know someone.
I'm going to leave it there. I have been pretty busy lately with sorting out my family situation. I haven't had the time to do much writing. I hope to get the next chapter posted soon. Thank you for reading, and I hope you continue till I finish it.
