Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 64: Feel the Magic by Tripp Savidge
- Scene 1 *
Skye fought the urge to run through the palace to reach Jhaeros. His wing-mates had already given him assurances, but he needed to see for himself.
"Breathe, Skye. You're vibrating." Jayce put a hand on Skye's shoulder as they walked.
"Jhaeros will be fine. Octus has him sedated, so there's no rush. While scary and uncomfortable to come into your magic so abruptly, we'll be here to help him adjust." Quanta's assurances made Skye feel a little better.
"Ril, was it like this for you when you got your magic?" Skye asked.
"Not really." Rilien gave a pleading look to Master Mage Quanta and stopped walking.
"Rilien may not be the best example, Skye." Quanta gave Rilien's shoulder a squeeze as they paused. "His powers were dormant, but he was never cut off from magic. We may never know the specifics, but we believe the charms and spells his mother used to disguise him also repressed his ability. Since he was under our tutelage as he learned how to draw on the magic, it was controlled."
"There must have been some reason she was hiding it from Meadowdove." Skye thought for a moment. "Maybe because his birth father was a high-elf and mage, it would have tipped off the king that Rilien wasn't his son."
Quanta shrugged. "We may never know. Or he could have had an episode and used his magic when he was quite young and doesn't remember it. That would not be uncommon."
"Okay then, so no help in understanding what Jhaeros is going through." Skye couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
"I'm afraid not; however, we have been through this with several of the dark fae. While it's frightening for him at the moment, we'll help him through."
"Thank you." Skye was glad the master mage was helping. 'Crap, Mistral. Do you think the others from Hell World will go through this too?'
'If they're mages, yes. Neither of Kibli's parents had magic, so he's less likely. We know less about Revali.''
"Quanta, should we contact Arnakkhor and Allanna?" Skye wasn't sure Jhaeros's parents could help, but he might be comforted by their presence.
"Someone may have already done so. If not, we can."
Skye thought for a moment and realized he wasn't sure how to reach them. He wasn't even sure where they were. They had been at the elves' palace last he knew, but that was for welcoming the dark fae to Draga.
'We'll find them,' Mistral assured him. 'Pater or Father will know how to reach them if no one has contacted them.'
'Right.' Skye realized he wasn't thinking clearly. He wanted to reach out to Garrett but that wasn't a good idea either. After the emperor had pulled him away from the Protectorate to deal with some new political issue discovered from one of the wolves, he'd then lost more time coming to be with Skye after the latest attack. No, Garrett needed to focus on his work. He didn't want his mate to get into trouble.
They reached the room Jhaeros shared with Venci. Jayce knocked and peered in before letting Skye enter.
Skye gave the gold a raised eyebrow as he passed.
"You know the rules. Just because we're in the palace doesn't mean we don't have to be cautious." Jayce's tone was warm and conveyed how much he cared. No, his guards wouldn't let him take any shortcuts on safety. Kuai smirked and took a post by the side of the door.
The first thing Skye noticed was that his grandmother was sitting on the edge of Jhaeros's bed holding his hand with Dillon and Revali on the other side. A slender man he didn't recognize sat in a side chair and rose as they entered.
"Thank the goddess you're here," Dillon said.
"Prince Skye, Master Mage Quanta," the stranger greeted with a bow.
"Octus, has there been any change?" Quanta asked.
"The magic has quieted somewhat, but nothing notable. Would you like me to wake him?"
"Not yet." Quanta put a hand on Skye's arm. "Let us see what we can while he's still comfortable."
"Grandma, do you know if someone has contacted his parents?" Skye asked.
Nancy turned and gave a smile. "Prince Argos took care of it and sent an air car to bring them."
"The other wing-mates wanted to be here, but we were afraid it would be too much. Everyone felt it when his magic hit. Venci reached out to the others to let them know what was happening so no one worried," Dillon explained.
"Where is Venci?"
"He's in one of the studies. He didn't want to make calls from here in case it disturbed Jhaeros." Dillon stood and came to stand with them, putting an arm around Rilien.
"You ready, Skye? Open your magic sight. You too, Jayce. This is good practice." Quanta approached and stood by the bed. Nancy was going to move and the mage signaled for her to stay.
Skye and Jayce approached and stood at the foot of Jhaeros's bed. Skye could feel the magic like a tingle on his skin. The night elf's aura was much brighter than usual as well. After what he'd experienced with the centaur foal, Skye also "listened."
"His aura is really bright," Jayce commented.
"It is. Can you feel the magic?" Quanta asked.
"Yes..." Jayce sounded unsure.
"Quanta. There's a melody, but it's discordant and almost painful." Skye had expected something more pleasant.
Quanta turned to Skye with a grin. "Very good. Yes, it is. There's nothing wrong. The discordance is a sign that Jhaeros and his magic aren't in sync. It's to be expected in the early stages. What else?"
Skye realized that Quanta was likely expecting him to use the identify magic spell he'd been taught. It took a moment for him to clear his mind and remember. Skye mentally spoke the words and gestured to outline the glyph in the air. He concentrated again.
"I thought you'd forgotten. What are you sensing?" Quanta was using his teacher voice.
"The magic feels strong but unfocused. The only answer I got from the identify spell was 'magic.' Not a purpose or what Jhaeros's aptitude might be." Skye was frustrated not to have clearer answers.
"I wish it were that easy."
"You mean casting the identify spell doesn't just give you the answer?" Jayce sounded affronted.
Quanta laughed. "For aptitude, never. I still don't know the answer for Skye and River, and we've been working with them for months. If it is cast on an enchanted object, then yes, it will usually identify the purpose of the spell."
"To be clear, this isn't his 'gift' as in being fae. This is mage magic?" Skye was disappointed he didn't know any more than when he'd started.
"It's likely both. And they're all tangled and jumbled. Once he's begun to acclimate to the magic we should be able to cast again and at least identify his gift." Quanta turned to look at Jhaeros. "When Arnakkhor and Allanna arrive, we can ask what gifts run in their families. Those often carry down, even if they sometimes skip a generation. Mage talent is less predictable."
"Can his aura tell you anything?" Jayce asked. "The greens and pinks seem much brighter than the other colors."
"Both heart chakra. There isn't a direct correlation between the chakras and the magic, though they often reflect each other. Whether the magic alters the aura or the aura influences the magic, no one has determined." Quanta turned to look at the other mage. "Octus, when Jhaeros came into his power, were there any events or signs? Fire, flooding, trembles, did those around him have any reactions? Headaches, bleeding, dizziness?"
"I was not with him at the time. I felt the spike in magic, and my monitoring spells alerted me. No one reported any unusual events. I believe Revali was with him."
"That's odd. Revali, can you tell us what happened?" Quanta asked.
"We'd just returned from a walk in the gardens after lessons with Arcturus. Jhaeros was upset because he didn't think he had anything to offer to the wing. We agreed that neither of us would be good guards, and he was pacing as we talked. Then he started to glow and stood really still, clenching his fists. He looked at me like he didn't know what was happening."
"Did he say anything?" Quanta asked.
"Um...yeah. He said, 'Revali, something's wrong.' His eyes glowed like Skye's do sometimes. He gasped, and it got really warm, not painful, the good kind. I felt all floaty, and then he screamed and grabbed his head. That's when Master Octus came in and put his hands on him. We laid him on the bed." Revali paused for a moment. "Yeah, I think that's everything."
"Octus, thoughts?"
"It all happened rather quickly, and I was focused on helping. He seemed to be in a lot of pain. But..." Octus seemed to think for a moment. "The magic wasn't hostile or aggressive, but it was strong enough to make it difficult to concentrate and cast."
"Does that tell you something?" Skye asked.
"Not as much as we'd like, but it went better than it has for many of the dark fae who've come into mage powers. No one was set on fire, no one hurt, he didn't bring down the roof, or cause any destruction. I'll take that as a win. I-"
"Jhaeros!" Allanna burst into the room and ran to the bedside. Nancy moved out of her way as the night elf burst into tears and hugged her sleeping son.
Arnakkhor and Prince Argos followed. Argos stepped up beside Skye and put his arm over his shoulder while Arnakkhor joined Allanna on the other side of Jhaeros.
"Is he all right?" Allanna looked to Quanta and Octus.
"I put him to sleep to give his body time to adjust," Octus answered. "It can be traumatic when someone comes into their power so abruptly."
"He should be fine. We've seen this with almost all the dark fae who have developed gifts after leaving Hell World. If it makes you feel better, the adjustment for those on Draga haven't been as difficult as those in Underhill." Quanta walked over to Allanna and put a hand on her shoulder. "We'll help him get through this."
"Thank you." Allanna turned back to Jhaeros and smoothed his hair from his forehead.
"Is it better on Draga because the magic isn't as strong?" Argos asked.
"We believe so. The magic in Underhill is also more...wild and unpredictable. It can be harder to manage and control, though Skye and his wing seemed to adapt quickly."
"Prince Argos said you thought he might be a mage?" Arnakkhor looked like it hurt to even ask the question.
"I don't think there's any question. Were there mages in your family?" Quanta asked.
Allanna looked up. "The gift of sight runs in my family, but I don't know of any mages, and I can't control my visions." Skye got the feeling there was more she wasn't saying. He was shielding out others' thoughts, so he wasn't picking it up from that. It was the glance she gave him and her body language.
'She is a seer and gets visions. Perhaps she's already seen but doesn't want to share,' Mistral whispered.
'Not sure how it would change things but she's been very reticent to share any of what her powers show her.'
"Arnakkhor?" Quanta prompted.
"My father's people all had stronger than usual gifts. Not quite mage level but beyond most fae, and it was almost always battle related. My mother was a healer, as was her mother and grandmother. Her father was also a mage, but I don't know much more. He left when my mother was still a baby."
Quanta gave the king a disbelieving look. "You're not a mage? You were the consort of the Queen of Darkness."
Arnakkhor snorted. "No. She would not tolerate any who might challenge her. My battle skills were what she wanted."
Allanna reached over and took Arnakkhor's hand. "You were also the most handsome of all the night elves." Allanna turned to look at Quanta. "I served the queen as well. Arnakkhor is right; the queen only tolerated mages who were weaker or who had been broken and bound to serve her without question."
Skye was beginning to think Lady Telawyn was the exception to fae royalty.
"Your gift is much stronger than usual. Given your parentage, that may have played a part. Being the king of the dark fae may also impart some abilities." Quanta appeared to be thinking hard. "That may be why you seem 'more.' As for Jhaeros, it's not uncommon for mage gifts to skip generations, but I don't think he will be a battle mage."
"You think maybe a healer?" Arnakkhor sounded hopeful, and again Skye noticed Allanna stiffen.
"It's too early to tell, but from what Revali shared, his magic was not violent or destructive. I can't say for certain, but I would lean more toward 'generating' abilities rather than 'overcoming.'"
"So not like mine?" Rilien asked.
"Probably not."
"What happens next?" Prince Argos asked.
"I'd suggest moving him to the mage halls. We can have him work with several different disciplines and see what resonates. Unfortunately, there is a lot of trial and error in finding the correct path."
Skye was about to object when Prince Argos beat him to it.
"Absolutely not. Jhaeros will remain at the palace. Let me know what facilities and resources you need, and you can bring your mages here." Argos's tone did not leave room for compromise.
"But, Your Majesty..." Quanta stopped and bowed when Prince Argos raised an eyebrow. "Of course."
"He's already been through more than any young man should have to endure. I'm not about to have him separated from his wing for testing. I remember how difficult that was for Rilien, and I don't intend to repeat it if it's not absolutely necessary. Is it time to wake him?" Argos glanced to where Allanna and Arnakkhor were hovering over Jhaeros.
"Yes, he'll be uncomfortable, but Octus can assist. We can use dampening spells and gradually let him become accustomed to the magic."
"Good, wake him, and you and I can return to my office to discuss what is needed. Skye, you and Octus can explain things. Your bond will help you. Revali and Dillon, please let the wing know what's going on, then return and help make Jhaeros comfortable."
- Scene 2 *
"Hey, quit worrying." Rilien bumped Skye's shoulder as they walked. "He'll be fine."
"Ril's right, Skye. He seemed more excited than worried once Octus showed him how to control the magic. It will take time, but you saw his smile," Jayce added.
"Yeah." Didn't mean Skye wasn't going to worry about his night elf. It also made him wonder who else might be struggling with how they fit with the wing. He didn't want to share Jhaeros's private thoughts, but his wing-mate was relieved that he would have magic and might be "useful" now.
"Do you think that will happen to me?" Revali asked.
Skye was ready with a quick answer but paused and looked at the siren. His friends gave concerned looks when they came to a stop, but Skye ignored them.
'What do you see, Mistral? Anything?'
'We know his singing drew on magic...'
Skye remembered the time they were all drawn in by Revali's voice. Now he wished he'd paid more attention and used his magic sight. It wasn't showing him anything at the moment.
'Perhaps he has to be singing for it to show. I don't see magic gathered around him like it did with Jhaeros,' Mistral observed.
"Skye?" Revali's tone was worried.
"I don't know and don't want to mislead you, Revali. It isn't something to worry about, you saw how quickly everyone rallied around Jhaeros. We'd do the same for you."
"Yeah, I guess-" Revali stopped when Jayce held up a hand and then put a finger to his lips telling them to be silent.
What is it? Skye sent.
Someone has been following us. Jayce walked back the way they'd come a few steps, then turned and joined them.
Hiding. Obviously doesn't want to be seen.
Let me check. Skye closed his eyes and concentrated. He found the person quickly; their anxiety was like a beacon. It's Father's servant, the keeper of the bedroom or whatever they call him.
Jayce snickered. Close. I don't think we've said anything to worry about, but maybe be cautious. He's not doing anything 'wrong,' but I don't want to take chances.
Agreed. I'll get word to Pater. I'm sure he'll want to know. Skye opened up his telepathy to the others. We're being followed. It may be innocent but assume any conversation could be repeated.
Kuai nodded and beckoned the group to follow him. As they walked, Skye reached out to Kwill. With Tennat being removed until he could be cleared of any wrong doing, Kwill and Beck were taking turns assisting Prince Argos and the emperor. Skye quickly relayed what little he knew so Kwill could inform their majesties.
Skye felt the tingle of magic as he saw Rilien gesture in a sweeping motion. He was about to ask when Rilien spoke.
"Silence spell. We can talk without being overheard."
"Handy." Kuai turned and gave Rilien a grin.
Rilien blushed, and Skye noticed the elf mage giving Kaui's backside a serious stare.
'Kuai hasn't been in our bed in far too long. Actually...there are a number of brothers we need to reconnect with.'
Skye knew Mistral was poking him, and if he were honest, his dragon wasn't wrong. Some days it seemed that there wasn't enough of him to go around. He realized they'd been walking for a while, granted, the palace was huge, but...
Kuai already had the door open when Skye reached him. He berated himself for not paying attention when he realized how many wing-mates he could sense in the room. He stepped in, and his first thought was that he'd never been to this study before. This one was very Art Deco with bold lines and colors and was larger than several of the others they'd used.
"Is he okay?" Kibli was the first to ask but his question was echoed by several around the room.
"He's doing well. Is everyone here? I can give a full update but want to make sure we have everyone." Skye glanced around and realized his bonds were already telling him several were missing. He saw Christos and noted that his panther was looking especially worried.
'I thought we'd have found him with Jhaeros. He tends to stick close to the new ones,' Mistral commented.
Venci pulled Skye into a hug and gave him a once over before guiding him to one of the couches. "Several are still on their way. I'll update those who couldn't join once we're done."
Kuai and Jayce sat on either side of Skye, close enough they were pressed against each other to allow for Dillon and Revali to join them. The two guards clasped arms behind Skye, enveloping him in an embrace.
"Where's Garrett?" Dillon asked.
"He's not on his way?" Skye knew his mate wasn't near but had assumed he'd be joining.
"We don't know. I couldn't reach him. His bio-comm had an auto-response that he was unavailable," Venci said.
"Oh, let me check." Skye reached out to his mate but found that he was shielding. He was about to tell the others when he felt Garrett's mental touch.
Sorry, babe. Tied up in meetings. I'll be back late and will explain then.
"He won't be joining. Who else are we expecting?"
"Taleel got a call from Captain Nekko and had to go to Protectorate Patrol. I think he was joining Garrett on some issue." Christos fidgeted as he spoke.
You okay, Chris? Skye didn't like seeing him like this.
Worried about Jhaeros. And what happens if Kibli or Revali get magic too?
It will be okay. Jhaeros is doing much better, and Quanta is sending over more mages to help. They'll be ready if any of the others come into their power.
Christos looked up with hope in his eyes and a soft smile.
Come here, kitty. You can sit in our lap. Kuai and Jayce won't mind. Skye felt Christos's relief and soon had the young man in his lap.
"Didn't know cats did the puppy pile thing," Jayce laughed as he kissed the top of Christos's head.
"Hey, don't dis it until you try it, bro!" Greggory shouted from the other side of the room.
"Nah, we just call them dragon piles. Or if Venci's there, orgies," Kuai teased.
"Hey, I'm feeling called out." Venci put his hands on his hips and glared at Kuai.
"Um, are you saying it's not true? 'Cause if it were me, that's what I'd be going for," Jerrick added.
"No denying those two are related." Gilian was usually quiet, and Skye was surprised she joined in the banter.
"Oh, please. We all know you've converted now that you know how much you like dragon D." Venci was never one to back down from a verbal challenge. "And remind me...how many dragons 'did' you take in the grove?"
"Um, maybe save the sparring for later," Skye interrupted. "Who are we waiting for?"
The door opened, and Mica entered with Bram, Noud, Raphael, and Bryan.
"Braden is with Prince Argos, so I think just the guys who were at the mage halls, but they're on their way. Right, Nik?" Venci turned to look at Nikias.
"Yup. River says they're almost here." Nik stood and went to the door to greet his mate. Moments later, Skye's brother joined them along with Mattekin, Feired, and Fiske, who'd been training at the Mage Hall.
"Learn cool new stuff?" Dillon asked.
River got a big grin. "Nothing destroyed and no lectures today." He fist pumped into the air.
Fiske and Feired glanced at each other before Fiske spoke.
"We did. You never told us how tiring it was. But my instructor was encouraging, and he said I'm making progress."
"Same. They keep telling us the more we use it and practice, the easier it will be. I'm not there yet." Feired accepted Arcturus's wave of invitation and collapsed at his feet, leaning back between the bear's legs so he could get his shoulders rubbed.
"How about you, Mattekin?" Kleitos asked.
The druid blushed as he found a seat. "Not so much new, but I am learning better techniques and discipline so I can do more." He glanced around. "It's embarrassing. They don't say anything, but I swear they think I was raised with no education."
Rilien snorted. "They're full of themselves. Just because you weren't taught their way doesn't mean they're always right."
Skye thought there was probably a story there, but now wasn't the time to pursue it. He'd have to remember to follow up later.
"That's everyone who could be here, Skye," Venci said.
"Okay. There's not much to say, but first, Jhaeros is doing well. His parents and a couple of the palace mages are with him. He came into his magic like some of the other dark fae. Yeah, it's dramatic and scary, but Master Mage Quanta said everything is perfectly normal. It's from being cut off from magic for so long, and it just takes a while for things to connect," Skye explained.
"He's going to be a mage?" Mica asked.
Skye glanced up as the door opened, and Beck joined them. He wondered if Kwill was still with Prince Argos.
"Yes, Kwill is with the prince." Beck walked over and plopped in River's lap after kissing Nik.
Skye turned to Mica. "Yeah, but we don't know much more than he can tap into the magic. Quanta thought he'd be fairly strong, but we won't know more until they've tested him. The only family history Arnakkhor and Allana could remember was battle magic or healing."
"Those are about as different as you can get," Arcturus said.
"Yeah." Skye laughed. "Quanta didn't want to say, but I think he doubts his aptitude will be battle related based on how it manifested when Jhaeros first touched the magic."
"How is Jhaeros taking it?" Mattekin asked.
"Now that he knows what's happening, I think he's happy," Rilien said. "You could see him getting excited as Octus and his parents explained what had happened and what it meant."
"Yeah, he's very pleased." Skye didn't want to share too much.
"Especially when his mom told him it was a good thing," Dillon added.
"Wait...his mom-Allanna, the seer?" Chaz clarified.
"Did she have a vision?" Corbin looked at Skye.
"Not that she shared. You know how she is about talking about her visions."
"Didn't you read her, Skye? Come on! Damn, wish I'd have been there." River frowned.
"No, I didn't read her. That's not polite."
"Did you at least think about it?" River raised an eyebrow.
Skye was saved from responding when Beck smacked the side of River's head, and it appeared they went into a telepathic conversation.
'Hopefully, Beck is providing some guidance.'
Mistral laughed. 'He'll need all the luck he can get managing that one. Storm says the rules are silly.'
"What happens now?" Corbin asked.
"Quanta's mages will work with Jhaeros to teach him control so he doesn't draw too much magic, and then they'll do a lot of tests. Once they figure out if he has any leanings, they'll start lessons, just like the rest of us. But Pater 'did' insist that the testing be done here."
"Wish he'd done that for me," Rilien muttered.
Skye turned to Rilien and sent a mental hug. "You are the reason he insisted. He didn't know how hard it was on you until it was over. You hid it a little too well."
"I guess."
"I'm glad he'll be staying here. He puts on a good front, but I don't think he'd do well separated from the wing," Arcturus said.
"I agree. This is a lot of change for all of them." Venci made eye contact with Kibli and Revali as if daring them to disagree. Skye also figured that since Venci was sharing a room with Jhaeros, he'd likely know more than anyone.
"Do we need to do anything different with Kibli or Revali?" Arcturus asked.
"No. Octus has spells set to alert him if anything happens, and Quanta will be sending over more mages to work with Jhaeros, so if anything were to happen, they'll be on it. I asked Master Mage Quanta, and he wasn't worried." Skye did a quick scan of the room to see if anyone had concerns they weren't sharing.
"You never got a chance to recover after the attack at the lab. Are 'you' doing okay?" Mica asked.
"Still a little twitchy, but I'll be fine." Skye watched his brother and Beck and guessed the lecture must be over when Beck blatantly wiggled until a grin stretched over River's face.
"There it is." Beck's voice sounded very satisfied.
"Perv." River's voice didn't hold any heat, and he shared Beck's smirk.
"But he's our perv." Nik reached down and squeezed Beck's crotch. "Still working. I was afraid Pater may have broken you."
"Nah, but taking down that uppity gold did get me horny."
Skye's interest was piqued now, and the psion must have known as he turned to Skye and winked.
"Don't leave us hanging!" Venci complained.
"Anything you can share, Beck?" Skye was wondering if Argos had already investigated their unusual spy.
"Like there are secrets." Beck rolled his eyes. "Sadly, the emperor will need to find a new Gentleman of the Bedchamber. Carver Goldenclaw has been sent home with his tail between his legs."
"I have a feeling there is more to it than that," Mica said.
"He was the one following us?" Jayce turned to look at Skye.
"Yeah, I couldn't remember his name," Skye admitted.
"Was he spying?" Dillon sounded aghast.
"He has been for quite a while, probably since he started at the palace. Seems that Prince Argos never trusted him and always made sure they didn't discuss anything sensitive while he or any other servant was around, so he didn't learn anything other than the normal family drama that all the servants see."
"Beck, did you or Kwill read him to make sure?" Skye was concerned what someone so close to the emperor might have picked up.
"We did-under Prince Argos's supervision. We also drained his balls and fucked him senseless. A few of the guards helped with that part, then we wiped his memory of the interrogation. He'll remember the fucking of course, 'cause we're thoughtful like that."
Beck had been spending too much time with River. They were even starting to sound alike.
"Nothing damaging he can report back?" Mica clarified.
"Not a thing. He can report that Jhaeros got his powers, but that will hardly be a secret once the mages converge on the palace. He can tell them all about Prince Argos's temper or his preference on tea, hardly big news," Beck said.
Skye reminded himself that if Kwill and Beck had both scanned the dragon, then it was as much a guarantee as you could get. They would be thorough and not impeded by Skye's sense of guilt for being intrusive.
Beck pointed a finger at him and nodded.
Are you always reading my thoughts? Skye asked.
No, but you leak when you are surrounded by wing-mates and think you're safe. When you're serious about shielding, I don't think there is a psion alive who could get through. Kwill taught you well.
Thanks. Skye felt a little better. Not that he'd admit it.
"I think we can all feel relieved that Jhaeros is well and happy about the outcome. I don't know about the rest of you, but that spike of terror...shit, don't ever want that again." Arcturus shook his head.
"Sorry, bear, that's unlikely. We're all connected, so it's going to happen, but I can say it gets easier to deal with when you know what's happening." Mica stood and started to pace before turning back to look at Skye.
"Was there something else?" Skye asked.
"Yeah, we've been talking. Mostly since we got back from Hell World, but there's never been a quiet moment. We want to talk about bond marks."
"Okay?" Skye wasn't sure where this was going.
"Not all of us have your mark. Sure, we're all bonded, and you can see it with magic, but some of us." Mica gestured to the room. "Have visual proof that we belong to you. We all want that."
Skye heard words of agreement and saw nodding heads. "Okay, but I'm not sure it shows on everyone. It might just look like a scar."
Kibli stood from where he was sitting with Corbin and stood in front of Skye. He turned slightly and pulled down the collar of his tunic revealing a perfect platinum scale.
"What? When?" Skye knew it wasn't there before.
"It showed up a couple of days ago." Kibli adjusted his shirt and returned to Corbin's arms.
"I want this mark. It is a sign of honor; we wear our scars proudly." Leesai crossed her arms and glared at Skye. He remembered that her bonding had been ceremonial, no sex, and no biting. He also thought she was more likely to give scars than receive them.
"Everyone?" Skye was surprised at the request and looked at Gilian, who nodded in response.
'I like this request. A reason to fuck.' Mistral sounded all too pleased.
'We don't have to have sex for me to bite them. I doubt Gilian and Leesai want that.'
Mistral snorted. 'Did you forget the Delea grove? I think Gilian would very much like to renegotiate her original request. Leesai would be more challenging, but if we did a partial shift...it could be an adventure.'
'No, hard stop, no.' Skye didn't want to hear any more from his lustful dragon. Though he could warm up to sex with the others...
Beck burst out laughing. Skye turned to him with a glare. Not a word.
But it's so naughty. Dad will help you, I'm sure. Your scales would protect you from her claws when she gets into it, Beck teased.
Stop it.
"Venci, perhaps you could help coordinate getting those bond marks finished since you manage Skye's calendar? I'm sure it would make him feel better knowing it was handled. Just make sure you allow enough time for him to do it right." Beck's gaze never diverted from Skye as he spoke.
You're up to something, Skye accused.
Oh, sweet dragon, I always am. And I'm feeling so much better now, I need to make up for lost time. I bet your sweet Kibli has a delightful scream when he cums...and cums, and cums. Beck was laughing again, and everyone looked at him curiously.
"Ugh. Ignore him, guys. You don't want to know," Skye said.
"Um, I want to know." Jerrick raised a hand.
"Of course you would. Mica, was there anything else?"
"Yeah, a few of us were talking, and we're a little worried about what happens if we find our mate."
"I don't want to be compatible. I'm not about to leave you and run off with some stranger," Rilien said.
"Kleitos, can you help with this one?" Skye asked.
"Sure. I'm guessing you weren't told, but when you joined Skye's guard, Father changed your status, so if a match were found, he'd be notified first. Only the dragons are in the system. Pater gave me access so I can run tests but none of the rest of you have been officially registered. Dillon and Willow are the only ones I've checked, but I can say that Dillon's mate is not currently in the database."
"I'm not in the system?" Dillon asked.
"No, none of our elves or shifters are. Pater doesn't want anyone to know, and if we need to check for a match, I can do it discreetly without leaving a trail," Kleitos explained.
"But Jos and I are mates," Willow said.
"Yes, but there's been nothing recorded, and it's not official until you're ready. We didn't register Charlie and Nancy until Father gave approval, and they'd already started building their bond with Luca. HealthCorps is overwhelmed with the elves and others who Skye changed. They won't be a problem."
"Does that help?" Skye looked around but could feel the relief from his brothers even if they didn't respond.
Mica scanned the group as well before responding. "Yes, thank you. I don't think any of us want to leave your service."
"Let's give Skye a break. Dinner is at the usual time, and we're all expected to be there. I'll follow up with Lord Eluf and the others so they know what's happening." Venci stood and pointedly nodded to the door.
Skye felt a bit of trepidation as he watched Venci usher most of his wing out the door. Fortunately, Kuai and Jayce hadn't left his side. Venci returned and dropped into a seat across from them.
"Bad news?" Skye prompted.
"Not necessarily. When I spoke with Rebel, he said Copernum isn't looking so good. What he described sounded a lot like what you said Eluf went through. Thought you'd want to know."
"Sometimes the magic isn't patient." Skye realized that he'd delayed longer than planned after the unexpected trip to the centaur village. "Can you help me figure out how we can get to him? It might be awkward to try and get him back to the palace."
"Already working on it. Braden was going to bring it up with Prince Argos, and we have some ideas to run by Eluf once he rises for the day. I need to talk to him about Jhaeros anyway. Also, I wanted to see if you need me to reschedule your meeting with Carmen Brightwing. We planned it before all the stuff with Caladwen and the lab came up."
"When is it?"
"Day after tomorrow." Venci pulled up his bio-comm.
"Let's keep it. If he's as famous as you've said, he's probably not going to take it well, and it might be tough to get another time. Was that it?"
"Yes. I'll let you know as soon as I have something worked out for Copernum. So...do I really need to continue with magic lessons?"
"You do. All of my wing who have any bit of magic need to participate. It will be good for you. Is Prada objecting?"
"No, he thinks it's fun." Venci sighed.
"They're going to teach us how to magically keep our clothing when we shift. I bet they could come up with a spell that would let you alter your clothing, you know, color, or style so you could always match." Jayce kept a straight face, but Skye could feel the humor radiating off the gold.
Venci gasped. "Oh, Father Dragon! YES!"
'That problem's solved.'
'Prada is practically salivating,' Mistral said.
- Scene 3 *
"Do you like it?" Skye watched Dillon's expression as he sipped. Dillon had brewed the special blend that Keeper had given Skye in Underhill. The elves loved tea as much as Skye and were able to taste flavors and nuances that made it a fun adventure.
"Mmm. Brings back memories. One of the servants used to brew something similar when we were young." Dillon closed his eyes as he held the cup and took another drink.
Skye glanced at Kwill but the psion only shrugged. "Dillon, I notice you and Gilian never talk about your parents. You've only ever mentioned servants and Gram gram."
Dillon frowned. "My father was never around. No one would ever say, but Gil and I think he had a falling out with Queen Caladwen. Mother was too busy to be bothered with us. She was much more interested in socializing and being seen. Or finding her next bed partner."
"I'm sorry. Is she..." Skye stopped, unsure how to ask if his mother was still living without giving offense or upsetting Dillon.
"Dead? No idea." Dillon gave a weak chuckle. "Last I knew, she was still doing what she always did. Once Grandmother had her declared incompetent to be in the succession, there was no reason for her to pretend. Not like we stayed in touch. She didn't even attend my banishment."
"I'm sorry." Skye regretted the turn in conversation. "When I had tea with Keeper, he also had these little treats that were amazing." Redirecting the conversation didn't stop the questions in his mind. Was she still living? Was she in Underhill or the fae lands? How did Caladwen's fall affect her? Did she know Dillon was reinstated? But most importantly, was she a danger to Dillon and Gilian?
'If she is, our fire will put an end to it.' Mistral's mental voice was heated, and Skye felt his dragon's resolve.
"If you want, I could ask the kitchen if they have any little sandwiches or cakes. I doubt they have anything elvish, but we could get the recipes."
"Maybe the next time. We should come up with our own traditions. I think what Keeper served was from Earth, maybe Japanese? I can't remember what he called them, but they were excellent." Skye glanced at the door again.
"He'll be home soon," Dillon assured him.
"He's on his way. I can feel he's closer, even if he's still blocking me."
"I'm sure he has a good reason." Dillon finished his tea and offered more to Skye.
He does. Be patient, Kwill mentally sent to them.
"You're looking much better, Kwill. I hope Pater didn't work you too hard today." Skye thought Kwill looked the best he had since returning from his home planet. Skye watched the psion lift the cup and absently drink the tea Dillon had poured. He knew tea wasn't high on Kwill's list.
I am feeling much better, thank you. And Prince Argos was very solicitous of my health. The tasks were trivial. Kwill waved a hand as if dismissing the idea.
"Even dealing with Goldenclaw?" Dillon paused mid-sip and stared over his cup.
Kwill chuckled. Mm...that was fun, not work. And while he may have been a spy, he was delicious. Kwill exaggerated licking his lips. And Beck said he had a tight dragon hole. Or he did before we were done with him. Kwill laughed again.
"Why-" Skye began before Kwill interrupted.
Because we didn't want him to remember being interrogated and needed a reason for him to fill the time gap without revealing we knew he was a spy. Having Emperor Darius find him spit-roasted between the guards was poetic justice. Seems he got distracted by dick and didn't complete a number of his duties. I'll admit it wasn't necessary to have quite so many guards prior to the reveal, but I wanted to make the prince happy, and if you didn't know, he really, really didn't like the dragon.
'Yet another reminder not to piss off Pater,' Mistral chuckled.
"Hopefully we'll be able to have Tennat cleared soon, and he can return to work."
I did attend Prince Argos for a visit to the holding area. While the prince asked about some other business, I did a quick scan-with Tennat's knowledge of course.
"Did you find anything?" Dillon asked.
Confirmation of what Skye had already discovered. Nothing new. He's gullible but not malicious. We've come to an understanding, and he is more likely to work with us going forward rather than against us. Kwill glanced toward the entrance to the suite, and Skye and Dillon followed his gaze.
They heard the door open seconds later and muted conversation with the guards. Skye let out a sigh of relief and stood.
"Told you he'd be here soon." Dillon smirked as he began gathering their cups and the tea onto the serving cart.
Garrett stepped into view, and Skye pulled him into a tight hug and claimed his mouth. I missed you!
Breathe. Need to breathe. Garrett gasped as Skye released him.
"Sorry."
Garrett rolled his shoulders. "It's okay, but you've got to remember your strength, baby."
"Why are you blocking me?" Skye glared at his mate and poked him in the chest.
"I'll set these out for the kitchen to pick up and be in my room if you need me." Dillon pushed the cart toward the door.
I'll be with Dillon. He needs some relief, Kwill sent.
Relief? The dragon wasn't enough for you? Skye asked as he fought back the laughter.
Would you deny a man something sweet for dessert? Kwill grinned and winked as he followed Dillon. Oh, and ignore any moans or screams.
"Right..." Skye said out loud and turned his gaze back on Garrett.
"I'll explain." Garrett held up his hands and moved to the couch, gesturing for Skye to join him. "Your call if you want to snuggle while we talk or if you'd rather glare at me."
"Ha ha." Skye wasn't sure what he wanted, so sat opposite and crossed his arms. He was honoring Garrett's wishes by not pulling all the information out of his mate's head. Most people's shielding was more of a "do not disturb" sign than a barrier.
Garrett visibly squirmed. "So... change in plans."
Skye raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. He didn't have to read Garrett's mind to feel the trepidation and guilt. That much came through the mate bond.
"The interruptions have put us behind schedule. Taleel and I need to go up to the space dock and work for several days to get caught up. Captain Nekko will also be there. I knew a trip was likely in a week or so, but they need us there now." Garrett looked at Skye hesitantly. At least he didn't cringe.
"Okay. Is Nekko well enough to travel?" Skye hadn't checked on him since they'd finished the bonding, and he'd been released from the Royal Infirmary.
"He's as good as new." Garrett ran a hand over his face. "Taleel and I will make sure he's taken care of while we're away."
"Are you up to that? You were trying to avoid any 'personal' contact with him since he's the captain." Skye did his best to focus on the facts and not spiral over Garrett being gone.
"The, um...connection to the wing is making it hard to resist. He assured me it was not a problem and even had his commander take me aside. Taleel doesn't have my concerns."
"Uh-huh. So...you're going to fight over who gets to ride his massive dick?"
Garrett coughed. "Taleel isn't really into bottoming."
Skye burst into laughter. "He's such a liar. Get him warmed up, and I guarantee he'll be riding your captain like a cowboy in heat."
Garrett chuckled, and his eyes gleamed. "You think?" He paused for a moment. "Forget I said that. Of course you'd know. I guess he has been much more willing to do that with me since you came into the picture." Garrett turned puppy dog eyes-or would it be dragonling eyes?-on Skye.
"No, I'm not happy. Yes, I understand you don't really have a choice, and this is your job. I'm not angry with you." Skye held out his arms, and Garrett moved to join him.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not sure there will ever be a 'good' time. There are too many players and too many things going on."
"When do you have to go?"
"Tomorrow."
Skye pulled up his bio-comm and sent a message to the kitchen.
"What are you doing?" Garrett asked.
"Ordering dragon berry wine and some snacks. You'll need your energy. I plan on draining you dry before you leave. You can sleep on the transport on the way there."
"Oh, okay." Garrett looked worried but he hadn't said no.
'I like this plan. Since the wing-mates want us to mark them and Garrett's going to be gone, maybe we make sure Venci schedules us time to enjoy them properly,' Mistral suggested.
- Scene 4 *
Skye watched curiously as his family and wing-mates exited the dining room one by one. That wasn't so unusual. It was the looks and backward glances they gave as they left.
"It will be okay, bro. I've got your back." River hugged Skye from behind while he was still seated before taking Nik's hand and leaving.
'Mistral, I'm getting a really weird feeling...' He watched Darius stand and give Argos a kiss before he rounded the table to come up behind him.
"Skye, I want to tell you again how proud I am of you and everything you've done. You're an amazing son." Darius gripped his shoulder and gave a squeeze before leaving.
That left Skye and Prince Argos.
"Should I be worried, Pater?" Skye figured he might as well just throw it out there. His gut told him something was going on.
Argos gave him a warm smile. "As a royal, it's safest to always assume something is afoot. But I'm not aware of anything particularly dire. There's always business to discuss, and the office gets boring." Argos moved to sit across from him and propped his elbows on the table, bringing his teacup with him.
"Maybe we should discuss definitions of dire?"
Argos laughed. "You are such a joy. You're looking more tired than usual. Are you okay? I know you're upset that Garrett had to leave again."
"Today was more challenging than usual. Master Chen decided we needed to include more blade work. I showed him the gift from Keeper when he asked, and he took scans to have practice blades made. I guess the real ones are too lethal to even think about using in practice."
"But I thought you had trained..."
"Yeah, but I guess not hard enough. He even had Kuai join us so it was two on one." Skye let out a sigh. "It hurt. I still hurt. Then there's something going on at the Academy. I've been really careful not to read others without permission, but I think they're arguing over my placement on the Temero."
Argos raised an eyebrow.
"My current assignment is communications and backing up in medical when needed. The instructors in medical have been very vocal that it's a waste of my abilities. Which I don't understand."
"Did something happen in one of your classes?" Argos asked.
"Yes and no. We've been asked to assist on rounds a couple of times, and I may have found a few cases where their equipment gave them misleading information. Not that I could have done anything about it. My telekinesis can do simple things, but I'm not a healer."
'Um...understatement,' Mistral prodded. 'Those soldiers could have died if you hadn't intervened.'
'But I couldn't fix them. All I did was explain what their fancy equipment missed,' Skye argued.
"You have magic, don't you?" Argos's question brought Skye back to the moment.
Skye looked at Argos and wondered what he was getting at. He took a sip of his now-cold tea to help focus.
"Well, yeah, but even if I learn healing spells, I'm much more limited than someone whose gift is healing."
"Uh-huh." Argos nodded. "And why aren't you using your abilities to find out what the arguments are?"
"Because it wouldn't be right! I can't just go snooping in people's heads." Skye was upset that Argos didn't seem to be in agreement with him.
"Skye." Argos gave him a sad look. "I love your strong moral fiber, but you may have to learn to be a little more...flexible. As part of the royal family and Garrett's protector, there will be times when you need to bend the rules a little. But then, you know that." Argos smiled and Skye felt like a rock dropped in his stomach.
'He's right,' Mistral whispered.
Skye took a deep breath. "I don't think what job I take on the ship merits violating their privacy, but if I think someone's in danger, I agree."
"I'll see what I can find out. Do you have any strong feelings over being assigned to communications or medical?"
"Not really, as long as I'm with Garrett. I think the only reason they picked communications was my telepathy. I'm not all that good at the other parts. I can't honestly say I see myself as a great fit for either."
"Don't worry, dear. It will all work out. And I know it's all more difficult when you're apart from your mate. I assure you I've let the command staff know to keep the separation to a minimum. Besides, Garrett can't miss your grandparents' bonding."
"Thank you. I know he has a job to do, but these mate bond feelings are no joke. I now understand why service people can take their mates with them-even on military campaigns and in space."
"Ages ago they tried, and it didn't work. According to the histories, an unmitigated disaster. We've gotten better at keeping the mates safe while still being close. That's also why so many of the combat personnel are unmated."
"I was glad Colonel Devroe found his bonded. I wish I'd known from the start what was happening." Skye at least knew what the feeling was-when or if it happened again.
"You're still learning and will get there. Colonel Devroe will be on leave for a few weeks so he has time to build a relationship with his mate." Argos chuckled. "I won't say he went willingly, but Father didn't give him a choice. I'll make sure to introduce you to his stand-in, Colonel Bloom. He's a lion shifter." Argos paused. "He's already brought an interesting matter to our attention."
Skye looked up from where he'd been toying with his napkin. "And?" He racked his brain but couldn't recall meeting anyone named Bloom.
"Seems Devroe's match raised the awareness within the Imperial Guard. I don't know if they weren't as comfortable sharing with Devroe or he chose to squelch their request. A number of guards would like to be included in the 'program.'"
Skye was stumped for a moment as he often thought of the guards as being dragons, but his brain-and Mistral-reminded him there were also shifters, elves, and a few other races. It just happened that Darius tended to pick gold dragons for his personal guards. Skye realized he hadn't responded.
"What are your thoughts?"
"It raises some security concerns; however, since you read the candidates, that provides more assurance than we'd get through any other means. It would likely boost their loyalty and positive feelings toward the family. While they are discreet, we have to assume that many of them at least suspect you are the reason it's possible," Argos said.
"Are you thinking of sending them to the lab like the others?" Skye really hated the thought of going back.
"No. That facility is now compromised. Most of the projects are being redistributed, and it will be declassified and redirected to non- confidential research. For the guards, I thought we could set up something here. Adds to the mystery." Argos grinned. "Are you willing?"
"Sure. I think it would be great for the guards to find mates. But we'll need a process so they don't get suspicious if I have to do mental scans."
"I'll think about it and talk to a few people. Including Admiral Cocachet, of course. No reason not to have Kwill and Beck nearby, either. If we're doing it at the palace, it won't raise any questions, and the candidates don't even need to know. Thank you for allowing him to assist us while Tennat is out of commission."
"He appreciates all you've done for him. I also think he's looking much better." Skye didn't mind the prince borrowing Kwill; it kept the psion from finding ways to torment him.
Argos waved a hand when a server peaked through the door and held up his teacup. They paused their conversation while their cups were refilled, and the server exited.
"You can be assured those responsible have all been dealt with. The medics have also committed to improving their knowledge of psions, so we don't have to bring in outsiders. I should be able to confirm a time for when you and Leku need to do the truth seeking on Tennat for the Assembly. I expect it will be early next week."
"Whenever you need me. I'm sorry about the issue with...Father's steward." Skye didn't want to mess up the official title, so didn't even try.
Argos snorted and took a sip of tea while shaking his head. "About time we're rid of him. And since you offered, I'd appreciate your help when we select replacements. My steward isn't working out either. Sweet dragi boy but barely competent. I think I'll look for a dragon this time, and we will not be continuing the tradition of selecting a noble for Darius."
"Will that cause waves?"
"Eh. Maybe. We don't honestly care. We agreed we'd rather have competent servants we can trust. The nobles will get over it. If they really want their sons to work for the emperor, they can apply and earn it with skills like anyone else."
"Can I ask about Goldenclaw? I don't understand."
"What did you want to know?" Argos's face lit up.
"I may have been told incorrectly, but I got the impression he was let go with the reason he had sex with the guards. But I thought that was normal for dragons."
Argos laughed. "No, no. Though I can see why you might interpret it that way. He was sent home with his tail tucked for failing to do his job. He spent so much time following around people and being an incompetent spy, he neglected his duties for Father. We had to let him go on long enough so the evidence was irrefutable. The sex was mostly a distraction to cover Kwill and Beck interrogating him. But it also provided further evidence that he was focused on things other than his job."
"So they wouldn't care about him having sex?"
"Oh, depending on how snobbish they are, they might be embarrassed he let common dragons seed his hole. Some nobles are touchy about 'who' they bend over for. They'll be shamed by his inability to control his urges and having the other nobles know he failed. The Goldenclaws have been sending sons for over a century. We'll make sure the word about the disgrace gets out to all the right people." Argos got a predatory gleam in his eyes. "But that's enough on that. I understand you need to visit Lord Eluf's estate?"
"Yeah. I think Copernum, one of Eluf's generals, is suffering the same sickness that affected Lord Eluf when I delayed bonding." Skye felt like his head was spinning as he kept up with Argos jumping from topic to topic.
"Father came up with a solution. You'll be officially asked to visit Lord Eluf on behalf of the empire as our ambassador. Since you've already been established as the Hand of the Emperor and you're to help build relations with the vampires, it won't raise any questions. The Assembly agreed you should meet with him regularly, especially after the incident with the wolves."
"That will help, thank you." Skye was constantly amazed at how Darius and Argos managed the assembly and events to work in their favor.
- Scene 5 *
"Tell me again where we're going?" Skye looked out of the air car at the neighborhood they were passing through. It was not what he expected.
"It's called Red Wolf. From what I could research, it's a neighborhood pub that attracts mostly shifters. It's been there for a long time but changed ownership a few years ago. Brightwing's people picked it," Venci said.
Skye turned to Gregg, who was sitting across from him with Jayce. "You ever been?" At least now he had a better idea of why Venci had suggested their wolf shifter join them.
"No. Do you know how many pubs there are? You tend to go to the one nearest where you live."
"You think it will be safe? Things are still touchy between wolves and dragons," Jayce asked.
"Brightwing's people promised it would be. Skye's got four guards and me. I think we can handle it," Venci said.
They arrived at the Red Wolf pub. It looked fairly typical for a small neighborhood bar. The driver pulled to the curb, and they exited and stood on the sidewalk until the guard parked the car and joined them.
Skye waited as the two guards, dressed in street clothes, entered first. It was only a moment before he was being led inside. He glanced around and did a double-take at a few of the accents. Most of it was what he expected: dark wood floors, walls, and furniture. A long bar and bar stools and a row of booths and small tables down the center. But there were some touches that seemed at odds with the traditional look. Twinkle lights blanketed the ceiling like a night sky, there was dramatic colored accent lighting under the bar and in the backbar, and sparkling faceted light fixtures threw rainbows over the dark wood.
"Welcome to Red Wolf." A huge bodybuilder shifter greeted them. "I pulled some tables together for you." He nodded toward the back.
'A wolf, right, Mistral?'
'Yes. Smells like wet dog.'
'Be nice. Gregg doesn't smell like wet dog.'
'Nah, our puppy usually smells like sex,' Mistral snickered.
"Can I get you anything?" the wolf asked.
Skye glanced at his companions. "Just water for me, please."
His wing-mates said the same, and the two Imperial Guards passed. One of them pulled out a chair for Skye. He guessed they were waiting as it didn't appear that anyone else was in the pub.
"Did you ask if they want drinks?" a voice asked, but Skye couldn't see anyone. "Ugh, fine. Go stand at the door and do your guard thing."
A moment later, a young man came out from behind the bar carrying a tray of glasses and a bowl of something. He was...beautiful and so out of place, Skye questioned if he was imagining things.
The silver dragon stood there a moment with the tray in hand and gave a dazzling smile. He was stunning with cerulean blue hair that matched his eyes, and makeup that accentuated his features. He also was extremely fit, with a gymnast's body shown off by a short crop shirt with "Fabulous" emblazoned across the front in metallic sparkly letters. His pants may as well have been painted on, and he was wearing gem-studded heeled boots.
'Pretty,' Mistral said with reverence.
Venci took one of the glasses as the young man visibly shook trying to set them down. "It's okay. He won't bite unless you ask him to." Venci took the tray from his hands.
The man squealed and clutched his chest. "Sorry, sorry. It's just... Oh, Father Dragon! Breathe, Blade. You can do this." He said to himself and fanned his face. He looked at Skye with pure lust.
'Um...Skye...' Mistral prodded.
'Crap, crap. Yes, I feel it, and if I can smell him, I'm sure everyone with us can too.'
"I can't believe the Bloody Prince is in my pub!" the man squealed again and practically bounced on his toes, and Jayce and Venci saved the remaining glasses from being jostled as he bumped the table. The bowl of snacks also survived, with only a few pieces lost.
"We're here to meet Carmen Brightwing," Venci said as he passed out the glasses of water.
Jayce lifted a hand, and Skye felt the magic and heard his gold murmur. "They're good," he said in a low voice.
"What? You think I'd poison a royal?" the server clutched his shirt with a panicked look.
"No, no. It's just standard protocol. You can relax, honest. I'm assuming Mr. Brightwing has yet to arrive?" Venci said.
The server rolled his eyes and gave a sigh. "No, that wouldn't be dramatic enough. He'll be here soon. Can I get you anything else?" His eyes focused on Skye as he licked his glossed lips.
"We're good for now, thank you. I'm Jayce; this is Venci, Gregg, and Prince Skye D'Or Drakken. Our other companions prefer to be anonymous."
The server glanced at the guards standing back and then turned his gaze back on Skye. "Father Dragon, you're even more gorgeous in person!" He paused his bouncing, and a concerned look crossed his face. "Oh, oh. Sorry, I'm Blade. I own the Red Wolf." He blinked his long lashes and stared at Skye again.
"Thank you for hosting us." Venci gave a questioning glance to Skye.
"Mmmm...sure." Blade let out a deep sigh, then jerked. "Right! Let me know if I can get you anything..." He walked back to the bar and almost tripped a couple of times as he kept looking back over his shoulder.
I think you have a fan, Jayce said. They knew not to whisper since most supernaturals had excellent hearing.
I think he's adorable. Venci snickered.
'Do I tell them or wait?' Skye asked Mistral.
'Let's hold off and see how it goes with Brightwing.'
Do you think the wolf's dick is proportional? Gregg stared at the man Skye now assumed was a bouncer and not a server.
Focus, Wolfie. We're here to protect Skye, not arrange hookups, Jayce chided.
Skye looked up when he felt more people. Two shifters, built like the first man who'd greeted them, came through the door to the kitchen. They did a quick survey of the room and nodded to the wolf who was still by the door.
One moved to the entrance, and the other stepped back as five more dragons came through the door. None of them looked like the flamboyant Carmen Brightwing Venci had described. Four of the five were also bodybuilder-big but dressed in casual clothes with a similar look. The fifth man also had a strong resemblance but was slender and immaculate- like a dapper executive out for lunch.
"Blade, why are you here?" the dapper dragon asked.
"Um? My pub?" Blade looked a little confused and irritated at the same time.
"I told you that Braxus could handle it," the dapper dragon said.
"No. I am not letting that bruiser behind my bar. He can stand over there and look muscly." Blade's eyes lit with fire, and Skye swore he was wearing a pout.
The dapper man sighed and shook his head before focusing on their group.
"Good afternoon, gentlemen. Prince Skye, it is an honor." He approached, and Skye stood and extended his hand out of habit.
Venci poked Skye to remind him, but before he could pull it back, the man grasped it and shook his hand.
"Carmen Brightwing. Don't worry about it. I have extensive dealings on Earth and am quite accustomed to the habit."
"You're Carmen Brightwing?" Venci put his hand over his mouth as if he hadn't meant that to come out.
Skye had seen a few photos, and this man looked nothing like those images. Steel gray hair in a neat fade. Perfect suit, dark eyes with hints of silver, no, not at all like what he expected.
Carmen laughed. "I am." He leaned forward toward Venci as if sharing a secret. "This is the real me, sorry. The other is a persona I wear to keep my public and personal lives separate. Trust me, underneath the suit is a dazzling diva."
Venci grinned and bowed. "It's truly an honor."
"Oh, dear. Don't tell me I have a fan?" Carmen grinned.
"Father Dragon, don't get him started," Jayce muttered, and Venci turned his best glare on his wing-brother.
"We must finish introductions; I have to know who these gorgeous men are." Carmen never took his eyes off Venci.
Skye realized his assistant was beyond words, so jumped in. "Venci is my assistant, Gregg and Jayce are part of my wing, and the two strong silent types are Imperial Guards."
"Incognito even." Carmen chuckled. "Let me introduce my sons, and feel free to shake hands. They're familiar with the custom."
Skye got the strong vibe that something else was happening. But figured he'd go with it and figure it out as he went.
"My sons, Argent, Grayson, Steel, and Sterling."
Skye shook hands with each of the large men and noticed Carmen watching intently. To his relief, there was no tingle or unusual feelings. It then struck him that all four of the brothers had the same color eyes as Blade, but very different builds, and they all had varying shades of gray hair from bright silver to dark charcoal.
Carmen let out a sigh. "Disappointing..."
"Sorry?" Skye turned to Carmen, and his brain caught up. Oh. My. God! 'Mistral, he was hoping one of them would be a wing-mate.'
"Wait!" Blade's voice called from behind the bar. "You have to touch them? Father, you didn't tell me!"
"Blade, stop. Please don't-" Carmen began, but Blade was already there bouncing on his toes with his hand extended and giving a pleading look to Skye.
"You want to shake hands?" Skye asked as he tried to stifle the laugh.
Blade nodded so hard Skye was concerned he might rattle his brain. Skye extended his hand and braced himself as the jolt ran through his body.
Blade gasped and his eyes went wide. "Father Dragon! Just fuck me now!"
"Blade!" Carmen scolded, then looked to Skye in question.
'It serves no purpose to deny it,' Mistral said. 'He was obviously aware of it enough to have his other sons tested.'
"Perhaps we could sit to have our conversation?" Jayce held Skye's chair and put a hand on his shoulder to make sure he didn't fall.
"What? Did that mean something?" Blade glanced around at the others as if he missed something.
"Blade, get me a scotch, would you? A double." Carmen took a deep breath and sat. Blade looked confused but did as he was asked. A commotion coming from the kitchen interrupted Carmen.
"Carmen Brightwing! How bloody dare you!" A petite man stormed into the pub, and Skye could guess immediately it was Carmen's mate. He had the same cerulean blue eyes as their sons and a build that likely Blade inherited.
"Father Dragon." Carmen put his face in his hands.
"Oh, hello." The man stopped by the table and batted his eyes-very much like Blade-and blushed. It was easy to see where Blade got his beauty and maybe some of his fire. "Oh, my."
Skye didn't think it was possible, but the man's eyes went wider, and he blushed even more. He not so subtly elbowed Carmen and whispered out of the side of his mouth. "It's the prince!"
"Let me introduce you, my mate and the love of my life, Collin Marshall, Prince Skye D'Or Drakken." Carmen impressed Skye further when he remembered everyone's names and introduced the others. "Steel, pull up a chair for your papa."
One of the dragons complied, and Collin took a seat. He stared at Skye and blinked his long lashes, reminding Skye of his son.
"Please forgive Collin for staring. He's a fan of the royal family and probably knows more about your business than anyone should."
Collin gasped and turned to Carmen. "You didn't!"
Carmen looked at his mate with an adoring expression.
"Oh, my God! You did." Collin put a hand over his mouth and nervously glanced at Skye, then Carmen, then back at his sons, who stood behind them. "That's why you asked all those questions."
Skye was picking up Collin's panic and was afraid the poor man might hyperventilate.
"Collin, it's okay." Skye laid a hand on his arm, and Collin turned and stared at where their skin touched, then up into Skye's eyes. "Breathe. I'm not upset."
Skye, is everything okay? Venci asked.
Collin was close to a panic attack. Seems that Carmen didn't share he was meeting with us and asked a number of questions-especially about magic and how I'd found my wing-mates.
"Before you ask, I don't know," Carmen said.
"Here's your drink, Father. Papa!" Blade hugged Collin and stood back. "Papa? You okay? Would you like a drink?"
"One of those berry things, please, but this time, put in alcohol."
Blade raised an eyebrow but saw his father nod and shrugged. "Anyone else change their mind? I can make most drinks and we're stocked for shifters and dragons."
"We're fine, thank you, Blade," Skye said and was rewarded with a huge smile.
"Perhaps we could discuss why you wanted to meet with Prince Skye?" Venci seemed to have regained his composure.
"Before we do, my apologies, Prince Skye, but I'm dying of curiosity. Was Collin correct when he told me you identify wing-mates through touch?"
Skye smiled and nodded. It looked like poor Collin might burst from his skin. "Yes, my magic reacts to touch, but I can also see it if I open my magic sight. As you might have guessed, it reacted to Blade."
Carmen looked stunned. Skye was pretty sure the dragon had hoped it would be one of the other sons.
Collin bit back a squeal and bounced in his seat.
"Skye, if I may?" Venci asked.
Skye nodded, and while the attention was turned away from him, opened his sight and looked at Blade as he returned with the drink for his papa. It confirmed what he and Mistral already knew.
"Why don't we focus on the reason you wanted to meet? Give yourselves time to adjust to your son being one of Prince Skye's wing, and then I can be on point for questions or any follow-up." Venci was back in control. Maybe learning that the celebrity was part of an act helped him refocus.
"First, let me say we can talk freely here. We have protections, both technology and magic, to ensure confidentiality. I don't think it's any secret that your visit to The Lust Factory was good for our business. That location has been at capacity every day since, and your appearance has made us a lot of money. I also understand the visibility was good for you." Carmen paused.
"It was," Venci agreed.
"I think there is a lucrative opportunity for us to work together. If you were willing to visit our properties or, even better, help promote and endorse our brand, it could be a win for both of us."
Venci held up a hand. "I see how you would make a lot of money from this; what is in it for Prince Skye."
Skye was impressed that Venci could be a hard negotiator and all business when, under the surface, he was still fan-boying at being in Carmen Brightwing's presence. He wasn't actively reading the others, but he had lowered his shields enough to realize there was something "bigger" that had yet to be said.
"Easy public relations and visibility. Licensed product merchandise and branding. For most dragons, it would be a substantial revenue stream."
"Mr. Brightwing, forgive me for jumping in, but this is window-dressing. There's something you haven't said which is more important to you than my endorsement." Skye watched as Carmen froze; his eyes glowed, showing his inner dragon as he visibly pulled himself together.
Collin squeaked and gripped Carmen's arm. "I told you!"
It was likely meant to be a whisper, but everyone heard.
Carmen gave a self-deprecating laugh. "So even more of the rumors are true." He took a deep breath. "I'm not sure how familiar you are with our businesses. We are one of the empire's largest and most profitable private companies. An entertainment conglomerate with operations on the most populated planets in the empire and the protectorates whose technology has progressed enough to make it lucrative. We have a vast network of contacts who help us navigate local laws and politics. That has turned out to be good and bad."
Venci gestured for Carmen to continue.
"There are some less than reputable parties who have shown interest in our network and connections. Please understand I am not without resources. We have our own private army and employees with specialized skills who can deal with most threats; however, we're a family business, and I prefer to keep them and me out of jail. My adversaries don't have those limitations."
"I'm following you," Skye said, wondering where this was going.
"An idea came to me." Carmen turned to look at Collin and gave a loving smile. "I'd like to propose a partnership with the empire. Access to my facilities and contacts-even my direct assistance when needed-in exchange for certain dispensations. I don't need 'protection' as much as I need to know I can defend my people and my business without getting caught up by laws that only protect the criminals."
Venci nodded. "If I may be blunt. You want the ability to use extreme discretion in terminating threats as self-defense without being charged? You know there are laws and resources to help protect you from criminals and threats."
A license to kill, Skye mentally muttered. His brain processed the idea, and there was a Machiavellian logic to the proposal.
"The empire is vast, and they can't be everywhere. They deal with corruption when they can, but it still exists. We're not a priority, and I have to tread carefully. If my network was a resource for the empire, a way for them to gather information, move people in and out of protectorates, hide people... It would be in their best interest to protect it from criminal elements who wanted to use it for smuggling, drugs, and trafficking." Carmen splayed his hands and sat back.
"And my working with you would give you cover and let everyone know that you're under scrutiny by Emperor Darius...and Prince Argos," Skye was somewhat thinking out loud, but he was catching on, or so he thought.
"And the prince does have a reputation for being protective," Carmen added.
Collin whimpered, and his eyes darted back and forth between them.
"Understand that some consider the oversight to be burdensome and intrusive. It's not without cost," Venci cautioned.
"Consider my alternatives. I want my family safe and my business to prosper. Does the development with my son make this a problem?" Carmen asked.
Venci turned a questioning look on Skye.
"I can't speak for the empire, but I can take your request and see if there is interest. Having a family member as a wing-mate won't necessarily change things. Though it certainly won't hurt your chances," Skye said.
"That's all we can ask for, thank you," Carmen said.
Collin looked at Carmen. "Blade? My baby?"
Carmen rolled his eyes. "My love, he's a full-grown dragon." Carmen used a thumb to wipe away a tear.
"Um...right here, Papa." Blade objected.
"My sweet baby!" Collin jumped to his feet and pulled Blade into his arms as he sobbed.
Skye bit his lip as he saw Blade roll his eyes and hug his papa.
Is it evil that I find this amusing? Jayce asked.
Oh, please. From what you've said about your dads, they're just as bad, Gregg teased.
Only one of them is a crier, and it's not my papa. But yes, family drama is a thing. I feel bad for my little brother.
Should we do something? This is awkward, Venci asked.
Give them a minute. If he's like Daddy, he'll calm down soon and then feel embarrassed. Skye, what do we do about Blade? Might be uncomfortable to talk about 'things' in front of his parents and brothers, Jayce sent.
I'm not so sure he'd be bothered, but I would. What do you think? Invite him to the palace? Pick a neutral location? Skye wasn't sure how to move forward, but Jayce appeared to be right about Collin calming.
"Blade, could I have your contact information? If I initiate a bio-comm conversation and add you to my approved contacts, you won't get blocked if you try to reach me. I'd like you to share information with Venci too. He's one of my assistants and can always reach me."
"Sure." Blade stepped away from his papa and pulled up his bio-comm.
Skye would have to have Venci check to ensure it was up to their standards. He felt the ping and captured the information before responding with a text.
Skye: || It's going to be okay. ||
Blade gave him a big smile.
"Can you tell me what the tingly thing means?" Blade gave a nervous glance to his brothers, who were wearing matching scowls.
Concerned, Skye did a quick read and bit his lip so he wouldn't give anything away.
'Not like our brother,' Mistral huffed.
'No. Though I guess we can feel flattered that they're all jealous. But I gotta say if the magic was going to pick one, I'm glad it was Blade. He's adorable.'
'I doubt it will ever be boring with him around.' Mistral's tone was pleased but carried a note of trepidation.
'Yeah.'
"I don't have all the answers but what we've seen so far is that my magic as a platinum reacts to individuals who would be good for my wing." Skye didn't think it necessary to bring up the case where his magic changed its mind. "We'll set up a time to meet and I can answer your questions. I can bring other wing-mates if that would help. Not sure what you know-"
"I can help him," Collin jumped in. "I...um, might know who your wing- mates are." The man blushed again.
"Good. You can let me know when we set up a date." Skye turned back to Carmen. "Did you have anything else?"
"I really hope we can work something out. Either way, you are always welcome at my clubs. Have Venci contact me, and we'll make sure you're treated well."
Venci almost swooned when Carmen sent a private message to Skye and Venci's bio-comms with his personal contact information.
"Thank you. It was a pleasure meeting all of you. Collin, have you ever been to the palace?" Skye asked.
"N...no." The man's eyes went comically wide and he froze.
"I'll see about getting you a personal tour. Maybe we could even have tea?"
Collin's mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
"My mate would be delighted, thank you." Carmen bowed after standing.
Skye was a little concerned that Blade had retreated behind the bar but a quick check assured him it was just nerves and not having any idea what to do. Skye waved as they left and gave him a smile he hoped was reassuring.
"Never a dull moment with you, is there?" Gregg said as they climbed into the air car.
"Sure there are. So...anyone want to volunteer to tell Pater we have a new one?"
Skye got a round of very clear and definite declines.
- Scene 6 *
Skye decided that maybe getting cornered in the dining room after dinner wasn't so bad. He sat on one of the weird "couches" in Prince Argos's office waiting for him to finish a call. Kwill reclined across from him and, every once in a while, would turn and smirk.
Why do you keep doing that? Skye tried not to sound petulant.
You failed. I do it because you're amusing. He's just going to tell you what you need to cover with Lord Eluf.
Wasn't that all included in my official orders?
Ah, but it's the nuances that matter. He's in a good mood. He's already got his people looking into Carmen Brightwing's enterprise as well as all the key individuals. I'm pretty sure he'll know more than Carmen himself before he's done. Kwill seemed to be amused by this.
That is his way.
Yes, This is the way. Kwill accompanied his reply with a mental snicker.
I never should have introduced you to that show. Skye had always loved the originals that his grandfather introduced to him at a young age, so it was only natural that he tried to keep up on things.
I'm way more fun than Yoda.
Maybe, but he was more powerful-
"Skye?" Argos called.
"Yes, Pater." Skye walked over to the desk where Argos sat and waited.
"I want you to take Greggory with you. Actually, anytime you visit the vampires, please include him. We need to rebuild relationships between the wolves and vampires. While he's an anomaly being one of yours, it's still good for the image. If you don't mind, I'd also like Braden to join. I know Venci often handles these things, but this way Braden can report back to me. Or you can take them both..."
"Of course." Skye wasn't sure it was a request so much as an order.
"Please assure Lord Eluf he has our full support, and while we think we've eliminated or dealt with any of the shifters who caused him problems, we'll deal severely with any additional incidents. After all, he is almost family." Argos grinned.
Yeah, my family, so I guess by extension, Skye thought.
"Since this is an official visit, please make sure your people are in uniform, and you'll want to present yourself well. You'll use one of the royal limos and one of Father's drivers. Hm...was there anything else?" Argos tapped his chin as he thought. "No, I think that was everything. Also, don't forget to enjoy yourself."
"I'll try." Skye couldn't hide the blush. Argos knew darned well Skye was going to claim Copernum as a wing-mate. He decided to go for distraction. "Any thoughts on Brightwing's proposal?"
"Hm. Such a brilliant idea, if I do say so myself. And yes, so many thoughts." Argos got a devious grin, and his eyes lit up. "Seetal is practically salivating at the opportunities. He has some very interesting proposals and options that would provide what was needed without it looking like we've given Lust Enterprises a special deal. Optics, you know. Father is dealing with the 'official' network and leaders, but he's getting similar enthusiasm. I think it's just a matter of getting the details worked out. I have no doubt we can make it mutually beneficial."
"Good." Skye was somewhat worried at how quickly they'd jumped on the idea. He also wondered how Seetal could already have developed proposals when it had only been a few hours since he'd brought the request to Darius. But there wasn't time to worry about it now. He needed to get dressed and let Gregg and Braden know they were joining him.
- Scene 7 *
"Sorry for dragging you guys out tonight. I know you put in a full day already." Skye felt bad for them but not enough to have taken unknown Imperial Guards with him. The evening was bound to be awkward enough with wing-mates.
"It's okay. We don't mind taking one for the team, right, Fiske?" Mica said.
"We all have to make sacrifices. Are you sure two of us is enough?" Fiske led the way through the corridor to the underground garage where they'd get the limo.
"Excuse you! Braden and I are quite capable of assisting," Gregg argued.
"Oh, Wolfie, sorry forgot you were there." Fiske snickered, but fortunately, they all knew it was in good fun, and Greggory wasn't offended.
"You still with us, Braden? You're awfully quiet," Skye asked.
"I was thinking about Jhaeros. What a whirlwind he's gone through."
"Now that he knows what's happening and has some control over pulling the magic, he's really excited. Yes, I've checked. And Kwill and Beck are both keeping mental tabs on him."
"It's rather sweet how your grandmother has taken Allanna under her wing." Mica gestured for the others to climb in the air car.
"I was surprised she and Arnakkhor decided to stay at the palace for a while." Fiske was the last to enter before the driver closed the doors.
"Grandma insisted they attend the bonding ceremony, and Prince Argos encouraged them to take some time to enjoy the city and let him show them around the capital." Skye couldn't help smiling when he thought about his grandparents and how happy they were with Luca.
"That didn't take long." Braden pointed to the media drones that swarmed the limo as soon as they exited through the palace gates.
"I'm really glad they aren't permitted on the palace grounds. They're intrusive enough." Skye had come to hate the constant attention, but at least this time, they were serving a purpose. As an official visit, they wanted to be seen traveling to Lord Eluf's estate. "Do you think Eluf has the same barriers to keep them out as we do?"
"I'm sure he does. It has become standard practice with anyone wealthy enough to afford it. I grew up with it but didn't realize it wasn't common until I started attending the Academy," Mica said.
Skye often forgot that Mica came from a wealthy and prominent family. The drive was uneventful, and Skye didn't hide his curiosity as they entered the main gate and traversed the long drive to the mansion Eluf called home. Several of his more recent visits had been hidden, approaching through hidden entrances, and on Skye's first visit, he'd been so overwhelmed he hadn't really appreciated the splendor and old-world European feel of Eluf's estate.
"Impressive, isn't it?" Braden looked out the window with his face pressed to the glass.
"Cool that we get to go in the front door again." Skye did a quick check of his wing-mates. All of them were somewhat nervous, but nothing out of the ordinary.
"Have you decided how you want to handle Copernum?" Mica asked.
Leave it to him to bring us back to reality, Skye thought.
'It's a good question. We knew he has a thing for Braden, and he's also into wolves. I say we have options,' Mistral pointed out.
They exited the car into the cobblestone courtyard in front of the mansion. Skye stretched and took a deep breath while he waited for everyone to gather. A quick glance to the sky made him realize the drones hadn't followed. It didn't mean there would be no photos, but at least it wasn't intrusive.
They climbed the grand staircase to reach the entrance of the massive stone structure. Armed guards stood to either side, but because of their lack of reaction, Skye figured they must have decided that he and his people weren't a threat. The doors opened and Kiawa greeted them.
Skye felt torn between thinking how stunningly beautiful she was and her vibe of "I will kill you when you least expect it." At least he remembered her name. She was much more terrifying than the guards.
"Good evening, Kiawa," Skye greeted with a bow.
Kiawa extended a hand for Skye to kiss. He did so and felt his stomach do little flips at her smile. She leaned closer and ran a finger under his jaw.
"Mm. You're looking absolutely delicious tonight, Prince Skye."
"Thank you, but I pale in the light of your beauty."
Skye felt a change in her emotions and saw the slightest blush. "Eluf is right, you're a very dangerous dragon." She stepped away and acknowledged the others before leading them into the grand entrance hall. Kiawa visibly relaxed once everyone was inside and the door was closed.
Seconds later, Skye was pulled into a tight embrace. He hadn't even seen the vampire before he was in his arms. Soft kisses trailed up Skye's neck before Basil pulled back and grinned at him.
"Hello."
"Hey, Basil." Skye felt flushed and a little unnerved at how his body reacted so quickly to the stunningly handsome vampire.
"Basil! No fair using your vamp speed to get in front of me!" Rebel yelled as he joined them.
Skye pulled the blue dragon in for a hug as soon as Basil released him. "Good to see you, Rebel." He held Rebel by the shoulders and gave a good look. The blue looked happy and healthy.
'Do you see it, Mistral?'
'Yes, even stronger than the last time. It appears that whoever he's bonding to is somewhere in the mansion.'
'We ought to let Eluf know. Maybe he can help us figure out who it is. Unless something's changed, I don't think it would be a vampire. There must be a human that's his match.'
"Do I pass?" Rebel asked with a shy smile.
"Always." Skye kissed his forehead and turned back to the group.
"Ah-hem." Basil cleared his throat, raised an eyebrow, and gave Skye "a look."
'We kissed Rebel, but not him,' Mistral helpfully supplied.
Skye had planned to go for a kiss on the cheek, but Basil turned, gripped the back of his head, and before he knew it, there was a tongue exploring his mouth. A low moan escaped Skye, and the blood rushed to his dick. Damn, he is hot, Skye thought.
"Whenever you two are done, I'll be glad to escort you to Lord Eluf." Kiawa's voice held a note of amusement.
Skye gasped when Basil released him and straightened his jacket. "Um, yeah." He pointedly ignored his wing-mates' snickers. He glanced around and up at the stairs and balcony but didn't see Copernum.
"Copernum-" Skye started.
"Not well. He's resting. I'll take you to him later...if you're good." Basil squeezed Skye's ass, and his dick got even harder.
"Quit that. I can't think," Skye objected.
Basil leaned in, his breath giving Skye goosebumps as it tickled his ear. "That's the point."
"Good thing your glamour doesn't work on dragons, I'd be doomed," Skye muttered as he followed them to meet with Eluf.
- Scene 8 *
"I'd already planned for a reception later with food and drinks. I'll make sure the humans in our care are present. I think it is most likely to be Kenta. Rebel spends the most time with him and often insists he joins us in bed. I'd also like you to check on Vidal to ensure he's still loyal and not having issues with Rebel becoming so popular."
"You mean taking priority in your bed?"
Eluf smiled. "Guilty as charged."
"I feel that I have to say it again. Please reconsider intimacy with Basil and Copernum. Especially when they're both wing-mates, it will be good for you and them. I don't know how else to assure you they're both interested and would very much like to be with you in that way." Skye hated the way Eluf cringed but felt a little better when he picked up that the vampire had been giving it serious thought.
"I hear you. I took the liberty of moving Copernum to my suite. It is more secure and will allow your people to stay nearby without being in the same room or forcing them to stand in the hall."
"Thanks. If you need to feed from Mica, Fiske or even both, they're more than willing. I don't think we need to worry about anyone getting by all three of you, even if you are preoccupied. Besides, I'll have Gregg and Braden with me."
"Skye, you wound me! You don't think I'm distracting enough to occupy their thoughts?"
"You're telling me you didn't plan to have some of your own standing guard as well?" Skye shot back.
Eluf shrugged. "You make it difficult to get away with anything."
Skye laughed and followed Eluf out of his office. He needed a guide to find his way to Copernum. The place might not be as large as the palace, but it still had multiple floors, wings, and a maze of corridors. They had covered the official Assembly business first, so now it was time to help Copernum. His team stepped in to join as they exited.
"Time to fix the general?" Mica asked.
"That's where we're headed. Maybe while I have Braden and Gregg assist me, you and Fiske could reconnect with Lord Eluf?"
"If you're sure you won't be needing us?" Mica said.
Skye looked at his surfer dude and grinned. "Even for Copernum, I expect the three of us will be sufficient."
"I agree with Prince Skye. He's not quite up to his usual self. No need to tax him," Eluf added.
They had reached Eluf's suite, and the master vampire was about to open the inner door to his chamber. Braden, Gregg, are you both still good with helping? You don't have to if you're not comfortable. The blood kiss can be...overwhelming.
Bring it on, Gregg replied.
Yeah, I'm fine. Just nervous. Copernum is a little overwhelming, Braden sent.
I think that might be particular to you, Braden. You seem to have caught his interest.
Braden snorted but didn't say more as they stepped into the bedroom.
Skye sat on the edge of the bed and cupped Copernum's face. "Hey." The general looked ashen and didn't have his usual vitality or cocky stare.
"Sorry, I'm not myself."
"We'll get you fixed up. You saw this happen with Lord Eluf; you should have reached out to me sooner."
"You were tied up."
Skye chuckled. "At least not physically, though we got close. I want you to enjoy this, so we're going to start with a feeding." Skye waited to see if he'd get a reaction.
It was telling that all he elicited was Copernum licking his lips and glancing at the other two wing-mates.
'This isn't good, Mistral.'
'No, but it's what we expected. I can smell Gregg's lust already. Have him get naked and feed fang. I expect he's already prepped too.'
"Gregg, Braden, go ahead and undress, then you can help me with Copernum. Gregg, are you prepped?"
Gregg gave an ear-to-ear grin. "Of course."
"Good, I want you to feed him but expect a hard fuck as soon as he gets some of your blood. Then Braden and I can join."
Copernum let out a low growl.
"Like the sound of that? I know wolves are your animal to call, so I thought Gregg might appeal to you. He also likes it a bit rough, so you won't have to worry about being as careful."
"Fuck. Is he always like this with his wing? He seemed so skittish. This isn't what I expected."
Braden laughed, and some of the tension in the room bled away. "That dear wing-brother is because you're hurt. Skye's worse than a mama bear when one of us is injured or not well. He gets very bossy and practical."
"Huh." Copernum watched Skye with a curious expression that made him want to squirm.
Skye pulled back the covers to get Copernum ready and it was Gregg who growled. The vampire was already naked, and even without feeding, his cock was impressive.
"Now you did it," Braden teased. "Gregg won't be able to think until he's got that beast inside him. Skye, how's this going to work? I thought the vampires needed to feed from dragons once the magic noticed them?"
"I have a theory. Dragons are the most powerful of the supernaturals but Gregg's still a super and also a wing-mate. I think the combination may be enough. If not, I'll feed him." Skye adjusted the covers and threw pillows out of the way as Gregg fell on Copernum's cock like a starving man. Licking and slurping as if that alone would bring the vampire to life.
'Well not completely, but he is having an effect,' Mistral said.
Skye stepped behind Braden and helped him finish undressing. His assistant didn't have a uniform but had chosen a sharp-looking long jacket over snug trousers. He gathered the clothing and folded it, placing it with his own. Skye laughed to himself.
'Guess maybe Dillon has me trained.'
'He does get rather testy when you toss your designer clothing in a heap,' Mistral agreed. 'Now we can focus on our sexy dragon while Gregg entertains Copernum. I want to play with his nipples.'
Gregg must have realized he wasn't going to get what he needed until Copernum had fed. He'd draped his muscled frame over the vampire and pulled Copernum's head into his neck.
"Oh, fuck!" Gregg moaned, letting Skye know the feeding had begun.
Skye pressed against Braden's back as they watched the two on the bed. Skye slid his hands around Braden's chest and began massaging his pecs, teasing his nipples enough to get them hard. It was pointless to deny Mistral what he wanted when Skye happened to agree.
Braden leaned back harder into Skye and made sweet, satisfied sounds as Skye began working his nibs. Most dragon's nipples were hardwired to their dicks, and Braden was no exception. Skye reminded himself that he'd need to prepare them for Copernum. Once the vampire had fed, they might not have time for the niceties of foreplay.
Skye used his telekinesis to begin massaging Braden's channel and prostate. He paused long enough to grab lube from the nightstand. Thank you for planning, Eluf, Skye thought as he squirted some on his fingers and worked them into Braden. Most dragons produced some slick for sex, but unless it was their mate, not usually enough.
'We don't have that problem,' Mistral said proudly.
He wasn't sure whether to be pleased or embarrassed that his dragon hole had started producing more slick than usual-even when he wasn't with Garrett.
'Pleased, of course. Means we don't have to wait.' Mistral sounded so sure of himself.
"Skye," Braden whimpered. "You're going to make me cum before we even start."
Redirecting his power, he pinched off the orgasm before it was too late. Maybe Braden hadn't been getting enough attention. That was pretty quick.
Copernum growled and flipped Gregg, then turned the wolf-shifter on his stomach. He wasted no time latching back onto his neck; the length of his pale body stretched over Gregg. His hips gyrated, grinding against Gregg's ass until the wolf let out a satisfied groan.
"Yesssss, fuck me!"
Skye did a quick read and knew Gregg was already close. The blood kiss would push him over the edge, and especially with Copernum pounding into his ass, his wing-mate could expect multiple orgasms.
Mistral gave Skye an idea, and he quickly acted. He slicked up Braden's cock, then fingered some of the lube into Copernum, using his powers to loosen the vampire's opening and get him ready. A good massage of his prostate, and he'd have a dick inside him before he realized it.
"Go ahead, Braden. Show him what it's like to have wing brothers take care of him." Skye added a mental nudge, and Braden straddled the vampire, slowly sinking home.
"Oh, fuck, he's tight." Braden continued and soon was matching Copernum's rhythm.
'He won't last long, but it will at least break the ice.'
'And open him up for us,' Mistral added.
'I got the sense that Copernum doesn't usually bottom, but we can fix that.'
"Oh, Father Dragon, I'm going to cum!" Braden pumped faster.
"Me too! Fuck me! Harder! Breed my ass!" Gregg shouted.
Skye could feel the sexual energy and lust through the bonds. The room now smelled like jizz, and he realized as he glanced over his shoulder that he was picking up on Mica, Fiske, and Eluf as well. That wouldn't do.
He'd never last if he was getting everyone's reactions. It took a moment of concentration to focus and bring up his shields so he was getting only the feedback from those he was with.
Braden slowly pulled out and dropped onto the bed beside Copernum. The vampire gave a couple more thrusts causing Gregg to grunt and moan until he pulled out and stood. He already looked better.
"That is one fine ass." Copernum smacked Gregg's butt and then walked over to Braden, leaned down and claimed his mouth. "And you, my pretty, throw a great fuck. I liked it." Copernum grabbed Braden's dick and gave it a few gentle strokes. "Maybe I should keep you?"
Braden's eyes went wide, and Skye picked up on a flurry of mixed-up emotions.
It's okay, Braden. Worry about it later. He's got bond sickness and everyone is wound up. Not the time to think hard thoughts. Skye sent reassurance through the bond and felt Braden relax.
"But you didn't join us?" Copernum turned to Skye, and his head tipped as if trying to read him.
"That's next. Let me check on Gregg." Skye put his hand on Gregg's head and sent his magic through the shifter. "He's out. Probably for a while." Skye looked at the impressive pile of jizz between Gregg's legs. Since vampires didn't produce semen, that meant it was all the wolf's. "How many times did you make him cum?"
Copernum shrugged. "A few?"
Skye laughed. "Been there. I think he's empty. He's going to be so disappointed when he realizes you didn't plant a load in his ass. But then again, making him cum like that probably made up for it."
"Never had any complaints." Copernum even managed to sound sincere.
"I doubt you have." Skye backed Copernum up to the bed until the back of his knees hit, and he had to sit or fall. "How do you want to do this?" Skye noted that Copernum looked much better so his theory had been correct, Gregg's blood was potent enough to feed him.
"Is it possible for you to claim me while I drink from you?"
Skye thought about it before giving a quick answer. "Maybe. I'm not confident I can keep my concentration during the blood kiss. It's intense. I'd recommend you take Braden while I take you. You can feed from him, and I'll set the bond and mark you, then once we recover, I'd rather like it if you fucked me and drank once you're bonded."
Copernum's eyes widened, and he grinned.
"You're just full of surprises. I like it." Copernum turned to Braden. "You up for it, pretty boy?"
Braden blushed and nodded. It was clear there was something "extra" between the two of them.
In a flurry of motion, Copernum had Braden's knees over his shoulders and was already inside the dragon.
'Good thing we prepped. Someone's a tad desperate.'
'He likes our Braden.'
'Yeah, he does. Something else is going on there, but I'm not sure what. We'll need to keep an eye on them.'
"Oh, Father Dragon, YES!" Braden cried.
"My pretty boy likes to be fucked. Likes having a big dick in his dragon hole, doesn't he?" Copernum purred.
"YES! YES!"
Skye grabbed the lube and used it on himself before gently teasing and fingering Copernum's hole. He was already open and slick from Braden, but Skye wanted him to experience only pleasure.
'Maybe pull our magic now, before we're distracted?' Mistral suggested.
'Good idea.' Skye reached out and pulled on Braden's as well, spooling it and binding it with his own. It seemed appropriate that it would be him since the two had an odd connection. Once it was ready, Skye added a third finger to Copernum's ass, and it slipped in easily.
Skye took a deep breath and slowly started to press inside.
'Oh, crap. Braden's right. For as easily as he took my fingers, he's tight.'
'Mmm... feels good.'
Skye used his telekinesis to add to Copernum's sensations. Braden seemed to be getting enough from the vampire without any extra help. It was rewarding to see Copernum affected by the nipple play and extra pressure on his pleasure points. He knew neither of his partners were going to hold out long, so he paid attention to know when the right time was to strike.
"Fuck me, fuck me, yes, so good," Braden moaned.
"Cum for me, pretty boy." Copernum bit and Skye felt the wave of pleasure and release through his bond.
Skye pushed his magic into Copernum, setting the bond and lighting up the vampire from the inside. As soon as he released the power, he bit down on Copernum's shoulder near his neck. It wouldn't be visible unless he was shirtless.
Copernum let out a cry of ecstasy, and Skye felt his body shake as the vampire was likewise struck with an ongoing orgasm. He rabbit fucked Braden with supernatural speed driving Skye's dick in and out of his own ass in almost unbearable pleasure.
Skye's orgasm slammed into him and he gasped. His shields slipped, and he was hit with the waves of pleasure that Braden and Copernum were experiencing. It took a moment for him to regain control as he collapsed on top of the other two.
"Holy fuck." Copernum's voice sounded far away.
"Yeah, welcome to the wing," Braden laughed.
Skye felt a warm grip on his arm and realized he was lying on his back. "You still with us?" Copernum asked.
"Mm-hm." Skye felt so good, and he could sense the new bond with Copernum. That made him smile.
"I, um, might need a few minutes," Copernum admitted, and Skye felt the bed jostle as he collapsed back to be beside him.
"'S okay. We've got time." Skye turned and wrapped his arms around the vampire and realized Braden was doing the same on the other side.
"Why did I wait?" Copernum's voice was soft, and Skye nuzzled into his chest. He realized a nipple was close by and teased it with his tongue.
"Fuck..." Copernum moaned.
