Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 63: Make the Garden Grow by Tripp Savidge

  • Scene 1 *

'I can't believe we're back here again, Mistral.' Skye was glad for the connection to his dragon as he dove into the wolf shifter's mind. He was pleasantly surprised that this time, Carson-that was the shifter's name- was the one who requested the change. He didn't want a she-wolf for a mate, and within the pack, that was what was expected.

'Backward,' Mistral huffed.

'I agree, but I can also see the conflict. He's from a powerful and wealthy family. His parents want grandchildren, young wolves, to carry on their line. Not his fault he's not into women, and if they didn't object to him hooking up with a male wolf, it still wouldn't solve the heir issue. Pater said shifter children stay with their genetic family, and adoption is almost unheard of.'

'Hmph. Mating is about finding your partner, not making puppies.'

'I agree. But he's here, so maybe they decided having a dragonling was an acceptable compromise.'

'Dragon mates are better anyway.' Mistral retreated as Skye pulled on his magic and burned away the blockage keeping Carson from bonding with a dragon. I hope you get the best dragon ever, Skye thought to the handsome shifter as he lifted his hands.

"Move away from the table!" One of the Elite guards stepped into view, raising his gun and gesturing. Another guard grabbed the anesthetist and held a gun to his head.

It took Skye a moment to refocus after having been deep in the shifter's mind. River gripped Skye's forearm and pulled him back away from the gurney.

Fuck. They're shielded. Magic. Can't pick up on their thoughts...I should have realized, River said telepathically.

Hang in there, guys. We're working on it. Don't do anything stupid or heroic; help is on the way, and even with your speed and strength, it's not worth the risk, Taleel sent.

Skye pulled up his shields to block out the flurry of emotions and thoughts coming from his wing-mates and concentrated, reaching out with his magic and his mind to the men holding them hostage. The four guards in the operating room meant to protect them were all wearing magic pendants that glowed brightly to Skye's other sight. Knowing where to look, he realized there was a void where he should have been able to sense the men with his telepathy. None of these men were the ones who welcomed them, so maybe they didn't know about Taleel and the others.

"Time for you to all say goodnight," another guard said as he pulled out what looked like a gas grenade.

A fourth guard moved up to the prep cart and picked up one of the glowing vials. "Where are they keeping the rest of the solution?"

"I don't know. They only dispense what we need for the procedures scheduled. I'd assume in the pharmacy or the vaults," the medic answered.

"If it's in the pharmacy stores, the other team will take care of it. What about the vault?" The guard dropped the glass tube on the floor and crushed it under his boot. He did the same with the remaining vials.

"They're working on it," the first guard said as he slid a breathing mask over his face. The other guards did the same, taking turns so someone had a gun turned on the medical team at all times. "You might want to sit down."

One of the other guards laughed. "Won't matter how bruised they are when we blow the place. They won't be waking up." He pushed the hostage to the floor but kept the gun at his head.

"Why?" the medic asked.

"Why? Because we can't let you turn our men into bitches for the dragons to breed."

The guard holding the gas grenade pulled the pin, and it hissed as the white gas began filling the room.

Skye, can you shield us? River asked.

Not from gas and keep us breathing. I don't know how to separate it from the oxygen.

Thought magic could do anything? River's frustration came through.

Well, that wasn't one of the nuances they taught me, Skye snapped back. Maybe it can, but I don't know how to do it without suffocating us.

'We could try to take the guards out with us. Maybe it will buy our team some time,' Mistral suggested.

Skye probed with his magic. His vision was starting to go fuzzy, and he was beginning to feel dizzy as the gas spread. The magic is protecting them. I can't get to the guards.

What about their masks? Does the magic protect what's on them and their weapons? River asked.

No... Fading...you take two left, and I'll take two right...not going to last long. Skye fought to stay awake as he used his telekinetic power to crack the seals on the breathing masks of the two guards. He felt the masks give.

"What the fuck?" one of the guards shouted, followed by a blood-curdling scream. Skye tried to stay awake, but the world faded to black, and he realized he should have sat while he could.

  • Scene 2 *

"There's my sweet dragon." Garrett pressed his lips to Skye's.

Skye blinked a few times, trying to claw his way back to reality and remember where he was and what was going on. Being in Garrett's arms was somehow not what he expected.

Take your time. Focus on your breathing. You're safe, Kwill mind spoke.

Kwill? Now Skye was even more confused. He reached for Mistral but found his dragon unresponsive.

"We've got you, Skye. It's okay. The gas messed with your head. The medics said you'll be fine, but it might take a while until you're thinking clearly and Mistral wakes.

Gas? The memories started coming back, the guards, sleeping gas... going to blow up the facility!

The rebels are contained. The explosives have been disarmed and are being removed. The place is swarming with Protectorate Patrol, and Admiral Cocachet and Fleet Admiral Matsui are both on their way here, Kwill explained.

Thought Elite was...

They 'were.' But given they've been compromised, and the saboteurs were all part of Elite Squadron, Protectorate is taking over until it's all sorted.

"River?" Skye realized he hadn't heard from his brother.

"He's fine. Nik and Beck are with him." Garrett pointed, and when Skye turned his head, he saw that his brother was in a recovery bed next to him. He scanned the rest of the room and saw that Taleel, Corbin, Braden, and Feired were also there with them, and he felt a surge of relief seeing they were well.

"The others?"

"A few bruises, but they'll all be fine. The two surviving guards are locked up for questioning," Garrett said. "Taleel said they got to you within seconds of you and River passing out."

"Two?" Skye remembered there being four and wondered if Corbin and the others killed them during his rescue. He noticed Kwill and Garrett exchanging a look and was pretty sure they were mind speaking.

"Um..." Garrett looked over at River. "We haven't had a chance to review the surveillance videos, so don't know details, but one guard was crushed under a bio pod, and the other looks like his breathing mask took off the front of his skull. It happened before our wing got to you."

"Oh." Guess that confirms their shielding only protected them from magic. And River might need more work on his control, Skye thought. He didn't feel too bad for the guards since they'd planned on killing everyone. He was more worried that River would be upset. It also meant his attempt to disable their breathing masks must have worked.

He'll be fine. From what Beck said, River wasn't trying to be super careful. He might have been angry, Kwill shared. I'm rather proud that he thought to use the mask and pod since he couldn't attack them directly and didn't use their weapons, which might have hurt others.

Skye had to agree that Kwill had a good point. He wished he wasn't in such a fog. He didn't like being vulnerable, even if his wing-mates were there to protect him.

"What about the others in the compound?" Skye turned his gaze to Garrett, taking in his handsome face and dark, concerned eyes.

"They've been contained. There were casualties on both sides, mostly the rebels but several loyal Elite as well. We think they were killed almost immediately when the takeover began. Likely, the rebels knew they'd never surrender," Garrett said.

"How'd you get here?"

"I felt it as soon as you realized what the guards intended. I let Father know and grabbed Nik. By the time we got to the pad at the Academy, a shuttle with Kwill and Beck was already waiting. We've been waiting for you to wake. You should know, Father's here."

Skye felt a chill down his spine. "Is he angry with me?"

Garrett drew back, eyes wide. "Why would he be? No, Skye. He's here because, intentionally or not, they attacked the royal family. Also, it's not a small thing to have Elite Forces go rogue. Pretty sure some heads will roll over this one."

Skye turned when he heard Taleel snort. The black dragon shrugged when Skye caught his eye. "He's not wrong. Elite is supposed to be above reproach, that they'd have this many willing to throw their careers and possibly lives away is a big deal."

"I figured it was more than the four when they mentioned someone was taking care of getting the serum out of the pharmacy. How many? Do we know?" Skye asked.

Garrett looked back to Taleel.

"Last count was twenty-two, mostly shifters and a few dragi. No dragons," Taleel responded. "Unfortunately, they were in key placements; it's going to take a while to clean up and re-secure the facility. We also think they leaked the location to the dragi faction, Daico. A group of them tried to enter the base."

Skye felt River a second before his voice echoed.

"Fuck!" River's hands gripped the sides of his head.

"He's awake." Garrett grinned at Skye.

"I heard." Skye saw that Nik and Beck were practically on top of his brother, reassuring him. "Maybe having them change their minds about River and me being put into Elite Squadron was a good thing. What happens now?"

Garrett pressed his lips together, and Skye saw what he'd come to know as the face his mate made when he didn't want to answer. He wasn't actively shielding out the others' thoughts, but it had become almost second nature. He carefully started to open his mind when a wave of vertigo and nausea hit.

Not yet, Skye. You need to rest a bit and let the effects of the gas wear off. It was nasty stuff. Kwill gripped Skye's arm as he spoke.

"Yeah," Skye rasped, closing his eyes and praying the world would stop spinning.

"They said it would take a couple more hours for you and River to recover. The others from the operating room are still out. That gives Protectorate time to secure the facility." Garrett took an audible breath. "Once you're recovered, they want you to resume making the changes to the remaining shifters. They'll use a different medical team and are setting up in another operating room."

Skye grimaced but had to admit he wasn't really surprised. That was why they were here. "Okay."

"You're not going to argue?" Garrett asked, and Kwill laughed.

"Still has to be done. Delaying or stopping would mean they won."

Garrett kissed him, cupping the side of his face. I love you.

Love you too. Sorry I messed up your day.

Garrett pulled back with a grin. "Nah, you saved me. I'd much rather be here with you. I'm sorry you had to endure that."

"Well, we now know gas weapons are a weak spot. I need to ask Master Mage Quanta if there's a way to alter my shields to protect us from something that's airborne."

Garrett cupped Skye's face and turned him to look into his eyes. "You realize you can't protect yourself from every possibility. Dragons aren't invincible. Like every other creature, we have weaknesses, and that's okay. Don't beat yourself up for this. I think you should be proud that you and River managed to subdue the soldiers."

"You mean before I passed out?"

"Yes. Because you still protected everyone else those men might have hurt if you hadn't." Garrett kissed him again and gave a satisfied grin.

"Where is he?" a familiar voice shouted from the entrance.

Skye gave Garrett an accusing glare and tried to sit, ignoring how the world tilted. "You said Father was here and didn't mention Pater?"

"Oh, Skye." Argos wrapped Skye in a hug when he reached his bedside. "I'm so sorry for all this mess. Are you okay?"

"Yes, Pater. Still dizzy and a little foggy, but it's getting better."

There was fire in Prince Argos's eyes as he looked Skye over critically, and Skye swore he could feel the heat radiating off him.

"Well, they'll regret this day." Prince Argos spun and moved to River. "Oh, my poor boy..."

Sorry, I didn't want to scare you. I thought we'd have a little more time before he showed up. Garrett sounded more nervous than apologetic.

Right. Skye laid his head back on the pillow and wished the side effects would pass soon.

"I hope you will forgive me, boys. I need to borrow Kwill and Beck for a while. We're going to interrogate the rebels while everything is still fresh. They're both approved Truth Seekers so anything they find will be accepted by the Assembly." Argos glanced between Skye and River with a familiar, determined look.

"Father said the Assembly was holding an emergency security meeting," Garrett said.

"They will be. I believe they're still gathering," Prince Argos said.

"I'm sorry I'm not up to helping," Skye apologized.

Prince Argos rested a hand on Skye's head. "Don't give it another thought. Since you and River were both victims of the attack, it's better for Kwill and Beck to handle the questioning. That way, there's no conflict of interest."

Skye wasn't sure he'd agree, given Kwill and Beck were bonded to them, but he didn't have the energy to argue.

"Besides, I need you to save your energy and recover so you can finish with the other shifters. Once we're back in Capital City, we'll see what we can do about getting your team some time to rest." Prince Argos kissed Skye's forehead before signaling for Kwill and Beck to follow.

Skye felt Mistral stirring in the back of his mind.

'My head... Someone needs to die for this...' Mistral sounded as if he were in pain.

'Pretty sure River already took care of the one who did this to us. We're supposed to feel better within a few hours,' Skye thought to his dragon.

'Is there a way to bring them back so we can make them suffer for a while before we kill them again?'

'Don't think we're supposed to be seeking revenge or killing anyone. Besides, Pater will deal with the ones who threatened us and survived.' Skye could empathize with his dragon but was glad it was out of his hands.

He sensed rather than heard Mistral huff before his presence receded. He wasn't sure if his dragon was pouting that Pater got to have the fun or decided he needed to rest.

  • Scene 3 *

"And here we are again." Skye pulled the cap and gloves back on as they changed in the prep room.

"It damn well better go smoothly this time," River muttered.

"Well, this time, our people are guarding us. That makes me feel a lot better," Skye admitted.

"Protectorate guys sure are a grumpy lot." River helped Skye tie the back of his smock.

"Not as grumpy as Cocachet and Matsui. They're rivaling Pater for death glares."

River snorted. "Pretty sure Fleet Admiral Matsui was a recipient of Pater's glare. You'd think Father would have done the reaming, but..."

Skye shuddered, and he hadn't even been there or heard the conversation. He and River had only picked up the emotions and thoughts in the aftermath.

"Definitely a black mark for Elite Squadron." Skye could understand the heightened emotions. They were supposed to be the best of the best and most loyal to the Empire. That there was any corruption, let alone enough to attempt this attack, was terrifying.

"Beck said they still have a number of soldiers to scan, but he didn't want me to worry. He doesn't think it's as bad as everyone's conjecturing," River said and let Skye go through first as the guard opened the door for them.

"That would be good. Fingers crossed." Skye took a deep breath before heading to the operating room. The Imperial Guards who'd been with him at the Centaur village were still diligently watching over them and escorted them.

The operating room looked almost identical to the one they'd used before, even to the bio pods standing at the side to help conceal their guards.

There's my man, Garrett said. Wanted you to know we're here in the observation room since you can't see us.

Thanks. Wish you could be right next to me. Skye saw the medical team giving him nervous looks. Not surprising given that everyone in the facility was on edge after the attack.

"Welcome, sir. We've got everything ready." The head medic gave him a brief head bow, letting Skye assume that this crew knew who he was. "We reviewed the procedure notes. Do you have any changes?"

"No, I'll do a check of the candidate, then signal you when it's time to administer the serum." Skye moved up to stand beside the gurney with their first shifter. Unless things had changed, he'd have six more after this one.

"And it's fine that they're already sedated? I'm hoping, yes, since this one is out." The medic looked nervous.

Not wanting to be surprised again, Skye already had his shields down and had done a quick scan of the room, looking for hostile intent.

"Yeah. That will be fine." Skye paused and looked at the medic again, realizing he looked and "felt" familiar. "Weren't you assisting when we did the first test group?"

The medic's eyes went wide, and he froze for a moment. "Yes, sir. I'm surprised you'd remember."

"Everyone's ready?" Skye glanced around at the others. Not being able to see full faces forced him to rely on his telepathy to read the others. The nods and subtle words of assent helped. River put his hand on Skye's shoulder.

I got you. Not bad looking. Is he one of ours?

Skye concentrated to make sure. No. Not feeling any pull, though I'm not sure if a mate of one of our wing would trigger that way or not. So far, our bonded matings have been between two wing-mates that my magic already noticed. He burned away the blockage with his magic after confirming that the wolf shifter wanted the change, then signaled the medic to proceed.

They repeated the routine with two more wolves before the snake shifter was brought in.

You know, River, if Celeste's brother is even half as handsome as this guy, we need to make sure he gets rescued and brought back to Draga. Wow. The man was classically handsome with fine features, golden-brown skin, thick brows, and shiny black hair. He was also throwing an impressive boner under the drapes.

River bumped Skye's shoulder. Maybe he can sense you? He's hot. Please tell me the magic wants him.

I agree! Can't you just make it happen? Garrett interjected.

Sorry, no. Not even a tingle-from the magic-not counting Mistral or other body parts, Skye continued to communicate telepathically with River and his wing-mates observing. He was a little disappointed, but he trusted his magic, and even Mistral agreed. He is a Naga, like Celeste, and yes, he wants this. He's also hoping for a black dragon... Skye turned to glance up to the glass wall where his wing-mates, including Taleel, observed, even though he couldn't see them. Might be worth at least getting close to him. His bond tether will be too new for me to tell, but yours should reach out to him if he's your mate.

On my way. I'll escort him back to recovery, Taleel sent.

Skye stepped away from the Naga. I'm tired.

Not surprised. It's been a long day. Hang in there; we only have three more and we're done. River moved in close enough to support Skye.

Until they find more they want changed. Skye knew he was being grumpy. Removing the block that kept shifters and elves from bonding was easy. What drained him was the subterfuge and drama that surrounded it. Well, that and people trying to kill us.

The next two were also wolf shifters, and Skye was relieved that everything went smoothly. Nothing odd or unusual about either man, and both were completely onboard with being mated to dragons. Skye shoulder- bumped River as they waited for the most recent shifter to be wheeled out.

Lost in thought? Skye asked.

How do you think it works? The mates' thing and you sometimes knowing?

No clue. Other than Pops and Grandma, the others have all been wing- mates. And I've only been looking for the auras on the last few. Otherwise, I'd have said it was a gut feeling. Not helpful or scientific... Skye shrugged as the doors opened and the next candidate was brought in.

"Last one," Skye whispered as he stepped up to the table and dropped his shields to begin. He looked at the lion shifter lying in front of him and froze as golden amber eyes looked back. "Um..."

[[Holy shit. It's really him! I'd recognize those eyes anywhere.]]

"Isn't he supposed to be asleep?" Skye gave a nervous glance to River before he turned to the head medic. The medic's eyes went wide, and he started a heated, whispered conversation with the anesthetist. Skye lay a hand on the shifter's shoulder and looked into the shocked amber eyes. Sorry about that. It's going to be okay.

'Pretty kitty,' Mistral whispered.

[[Shit! Shit! Shit! I can hear him in my head. So that's true too? Fuck, can he hear me?]]

Yes, I can hear you. No reason to freak out. Try to relax. Skye channeled calming energy with his magic.

Skye, you need me to do anything? River asked

Don't think so. Maybe pull your magic and be ready for...I don't know, something weird?

River laughed out loud and squeezed Skye's shoulder.

But... it's really you. The Bloody Prince. Wait... Please don't kill me, I swear I won't tell anyone! The guy's eyes were wide in fear, and his breathing became erratic, noticeable even through the oxygen mask they had on him.

Shh... It's okay. No one is going to kill you. You're here for a reason, right? You want to be able to mate with a dragon?

More than anything. You can really make that happen? The lion shifter asked.

Skye did a quick scan to assure himself that the lion would be a good mate and had no ulterior motives or secret plots in his head. He felt something odd and looked deeper with his magic sight as well. He didn't feel the pull he'd expect with a potential wing-mate, but there was something...

River, do you feel anything odd? Not sure what it is but something's different. My gut is telling me to pay attention.

"Sir, it will just be a moment. His metabolism is burning through the sedative as fast as we can pump it into him," the chief medic said.

Skye nodded and turned back to the shifter. Nervous?

Big time.

Nothing other than a very panicked shifter, River sent.

Spooling his magic and concentrating, Skye decided he didn't need to wait for the lion to be unconscious. He burned away the blockage while keeping eye contact. The shifter didn't even flinch. He looked more closely at his aura and didn't see it stretching or reaching for anyone, but he still felt something.

'Mistral, any ideas?'

'No, but I agree he feels different. Like we should notice and know what to do. Maybe ask Braden to get his name, and we can keep an eye on him. Pater may also need to get involved since he recognized us. He's hot, can we fuck him?'

Skye sighed. 'Good idea about following up, and no, we can't.' Skye patted the shifter's arm. You're going to be a great mate for a very lucky dragon. They'll try to match you within a few days. Be patient, it will work out. Deal? And congratulations in advance.

Thank you. The shifter's eyes started to droop, and Skye wondered if the drugs had started to take hold.

Skye glanced up to where he knew the others were as he stepped away to let the team go through with the rest of the charade. Braden? Did you follow any of that?

Already on it. I sent a note to Prince Argos, and I'm checking the guy's background now. Looks legitimate, from a wealthy, prestigious family who've been very supportive of the Emperor.

If Pater approved him, I'd expect nothing less, River said.

Good point. Hey, Taleel, did you get anything from the Naga? I didn't see your bond respond when you took him out, Skye asked.

Sadly, no. Gorgeous as he is, Jett says he's not the one.

I'm sorry. We'll keep looking, Skye promised. He looked over his shoulder at River when his brother pulled him back from the gurney and realized he was in the way of the team completing the fake procedure.

He is fucking hot. You sure he's not supposed to be a wing-mate? River asked.

I'm sure. My magic isn't responding to him, so it's not even like what I got with Bram and Noud. I wish I knew what it was.

I agree with River. The wing would have liked him. Good news is that you're done. Once they take him out, we can regroup with Father's people and see what's next. With the place on lockdown, it could get complicated, Garrett said.

  • Scene 4 *

"Anything from Kwill?" River asked as he paced the room.

"Nothing since I told you the last time." Skye leaned back against Garrett's chest as he played with his mate's braid. He wasn't satisfied with a chair and insisted they sit on the floor so they could be closer. The conference room where they waited didn't have much to offer. Taleel, Corbin, and Feired were discussing something about team structure, and Braden was-of course-working on his bio-comm. The Imperial Guards were posted outside at the emperor's insistence.

Taleel looked up at River. "It's a large facility. I'm not surprised it's taking a while for them to be sure they've found everyone. Being underground and having so many stone walls between sections messes with the scanners."

"I thought they could detect species on a planet or another ship; why is this place so difficult?" River objected.

"They're not on a spaceship, they're using hand scanners, not as powerful," Taleel said.

Corbin pushed back his chair and stood before leaning over the table, still in conversation with the others.

Damn, that ass. Makes you want to grab him and take a bite. Skye felt heat rush to his face as he realized what he'd just admitted to his mate.

River snorted and gave Skye a grin. "Nope, open channel, bro."

Corbin looked over his shoulder and smiled as he wiggled his ass. Of all the wing-mates, Corbin looked the most like what Skye imagined for a soldier with a muscular, athletic build, short-cropped, dark hair, dark eyes, masculine jaw...and a bountiful round ass worthy of worship.

Oh, God. Just kill me now. Skye buried his face in Garrett's arms.

Don't be embarrassed. I think you made Corbin's day, and you're not wrong; he has a gorgeous ass. Garrett's love came through their bond as he offered words of encouragement. Skye also realized his mate was smart enough to only speak with him and not broadcast to everyone.

You're being too hard on yourself. It's been a rough day. Garrett's arms wrapped tighter around Skye, and he laid kisses along Skye's neck.

I guess. Skye stilled for a moment as he felt a brush against his shields. He knew immediately it was Kwill and was impressed at how easily the psion managed their telepathic link. He wasn't intrusive; he didn't just speak; he gently caught Skye's attention and waited to be invited. Hey, Kwill. Everything okay?

It is. I was reaching out to let you know Beck and I are finished. Cocachet and Matsui have a few questions for the team, but the interrogations are complete, and the prisoners are being taken to another secure facility. Someone will likely be calling for you soon.

They're not coming here? Skye asked and realized the room was probably too small anyway.

No. They've commandeered a large conference room near the command center. The Emperor and Prince Argos are with them now, Kwill sent.

How's Pater's mood? Do we need to worry? Skye squeezed Garrett's hand so he'd know all was well. He could feel his mate nudging at the edge of his thoughts, wondering what was going on. Talking to Kwill, everything's fine.

Not sure I'm a good judge, but I'd say still angry. Things aren't catching on fire anymore, so I guess he's in a better place than he was. And while the burns were severe, I'm pretty sure a few days in a bio pod and those guys will be fine...I think.

And you and Beck? You're still recovering. This wasn't too much for you, was it?

Tired and mild headaches. We'll be fine. See you soon. Oh, and Skye...I agree Corbin's ass is perfection. Kwill cut off before Skye could respond.

"Jerk." Skye turned to look up at Garrett just as a knock sounded at the door.

"Your Majesties, the emperor has requested that we join them." One of the Imperial Guard had opened the door and leaned in to be heard.

"Shut down, Braden, we have places to be," River teased.

Braden responded with an eye roll and closed his bio-comm as he stood. Wouldn't surprise Skye if he already was in conversation with Pater and knew more than they did.

The conference room turned into the emperor and admirals' command center, and the surrounding offices were a hive of activity. He counted at least eight additional Imperial Guard at posts around the area and countless Protectorate Patrol uniforms and base staff scurrying in and out of the space.

Emperor Darius, Prince Argos, Admiral Cocachet, and Fleet Admiral Matsui were seated at one end of the large table.

"Please join us, gentlemen. Your guards can take a break while we talk," Emperor Darius said without looking up from his datapad.

Garrett, isn't it unusual for Father to be directly involved like this? Seems somewhat beneath his station, Skye mentally whispered.

It is. I'd even say it's unusual for Cocachet and Matsui to be directly involved, and no, I don't have an explanation, Garrett said.

"I know it's already been a long day for you, and I'm sorry to have to ask more. We have a few questions. Mostly to validate what we've already found and to learn if you might have seen or noticed anything that others missed." Cocachet gave a nod to the emperor and looked to the prince and Matsui. "Shall we begin?"

Most of the questions ended up being for Skye and River, though they did ask Taleel, Braden, and Feired about what they could see from the observation room and anything they noticed on their way into the compound. Prince Argos and Fleet Admiral Matsui left the majority of questioning to Admiral Cocachet and the emperor.

"Thank you. A transport is being prepared to take your team back to Capital City. We're taking extra precautions since Daico learned of this location. We'll be using decoys as well as camouflaged equipment to ensure your safety." Cocachet stood. "Try to relax as best you can until it's time to leave."

"We'll see you back at the palace. Travel safely, boys." Argos moved around the table and hugged each of them. When he got to Skye, he turned Skye's chin to make eye contact and held his gaze for a moment. "Don't fret. We've got this."

Fire still burned in Argos's pupils, but the heat Skye had felt earlier had cooled. He was going to take that as a good sign. Emperor Darius and Prince Argos were the first to leave, followed by Skye's team.

"Prince Skye, if you could spare just a moment?" Fleet Admiral Matsui said when he was almost to the door.

Garrett turned to him. Stay or go?

Wait for me outside. I'll keep our link open.

The door closed softly after Garrett, and Skye turned to the Pelurian commander and gave a head bow.

"I said when we first met you were going to be trouble." The petite dusty-green woman shook her head. Her voice was deep and raspy, similar to what his grandmother had referred to as a "smoker's voice." She sat and gestured for Skye to do the same. She stared at him for what seemed like several minutes before speaking again.

"Still think you would have excelled in Elite Squadron, today's debacle aside." Matsui steepled her fingers and continued her penetrating stare. Skye felt like he'd just been told he'd have done well in house Slytherin.

Skye waited for the pelurian to continue.

"No matter. You likely ended up with even better training, and it shows. Vice Admiral Silvers has been very impressed, and that's not easy to do. I no longer see the scared norbel. Another plus, and you've bulked up a good bit as well." Matsui tipped her head. "Yes, much more confident. Still a pain in my ass and a troublemaker. I thought I'd finally reached a point of being able to consider retiring-again." She let out a deep sigh.

"Sorry?" Skye wasn't sure what to say and he was surprised the man who was in charge of training knew anything about him. He hadn't met Vice Admiral Silvers and only knew him by name as the man Cocachet had promoted to take Vice Admiral Bresel's spot when he was reassigned.

"Much as I'd like to blame you, this wasn't your doing. You happen to have the uncanny misfortune to always be found at the center of the disasters." Matsui raised an eyebrow. "You wouldn't be using some secret mystical power we don't know about to do that, would you?"

"Not that I know of." Skye's mind raced-since in a way, his ability to make shifters compatible was likely the trigger, but he didn't think that's what the fleet admiral meant.

Matsui chuckled. "No, I suppose not. We've always had enemies. Recent events have likely forced their hand. You'll need to be diligent and take precautions. Not everyone is happy about shifters and fae becoming dragon mates."

"So I've discovered," Skye admitted.

"I have hope for you, Prince Skye. You've exceeded my expectations, but you've also shifted the game and terrified a number of factions. People do desperate things when they're scared. Be careful."

"Yes, ma'am."

"I think your mate and wing are waiting for you. I'll be watching, Prince Skye." Matsui stood and nodded to the door.

"Thank you, Fleet Admiral." Skye gave a head bow and retreated with the sound of Matsui's laugh following.

  • Scene 5 * "Pretty sure they'll fasten better without your hands inside." Skye liked Garrett's attention, but having his mate's hands gripping his ass and teasing his hole was getting him worked up, and there'd be no relief for hours.

"You sure?" Garrett laid gentle kisses along Skye's jaw, his finger teasing his entrance. Someone's getting wet for me.

Come on, Garrett! Stop. We can't do anything until we're back at the palace, and even then, it's going to be late, and people might be waiting for us. Not fair to get me all turned on.

But I've missed you. Garrett nibbled Skye's ear, sending chills down his spine.

"Okay, you two. Our ride is waiting." Taleel sounded exasperated, but then again, he'd just given a similar reminder to Nik and River.

Garrett pulled back and did an exaggerated lick of the fingers that had been inside Skye.

"Ugh." Skye closed his eyes and focused on getting dressed. They'd been given generic Protectorate uniforms to blend in for their departure. While the theory was that the facility was now secured, no one was taking chances.

When they reached the bay, they were directed to a beat-up-looking ground transport. Fortunately, the inside was in much better shape than the exterior would indicate.

"We're not flying?" River asked.

Taleel was already buckling in when he spoke. "Eventually. They're sending a decoy Protectorate shuttle out just before we leave. Another disguised transport is waiting for us several miles out. They did the same for the emperor and Prince Argos when they left. Since the location was leaked, there could be others watching for outbound traffic. No sense in making it easy for them."

"They aren't going to send out patrols?" Corbin asked.

"They have. Extra precautions won't hurt though." Taleel had met with the Protectorate commander who was taking over control of the facility to organize their departure.

"Any idea what they did with the dragi who tried to enter the facility?"

Corbin cringed. "I was talking to one of the guys-served with him back in the day-he said most of them were killed. Not sure if they were just poorly prepared or if the rebels were supposed to have cleared the way, but they never got close to the core facility. The automated defenses took them out."

"Sounds nasty." River helped Nik strap in. "You said most. That mean there were survivors to question?"

"He didn't say. Did Kwill or Beck mention anything? I'd assume they would have been involved if there was any questioning to be done since they interrogated the Elite rogues," Corbin said.

"Kwill didn't give any details before he left with Father and Pater." Skye paused while he checked his bond to the psion. "He's shielded at the moment."

River snorted. "Like that could stop you."

"I try to be considerate, and that's not polite. Telepathy is invasive enough on its own. There needs to be etiquette, something you could work on adopting."

"Yeah, yeah." River had the decency to blush.

The group was quieter than usual after the eventful day. Changing to the shuttle went without a hitch, and they arrived at an airstrip outside the city, where they caught a tube car to the palace. It was late by the time the guards escorted them back to the family wing, and Skye was ready to crawl into bed.

"Welcome home, Your Majesties." The guard opened the door to their suite. The lights were dim, and the bed had been turned down.

"Thank the goddess!" Dillon ran to Skye and pulled him into his arms. "You've got to stop scaring us."

"Totally agree," Garrett said. "Everyone okay here?"

"Yeah, it got to be late enough they headed to bed." Dillon stepped back and gave Skye a once-over. "They wanted to see you but knew you'd be exhausted. That's not your uniform."

"We were given these to blend in with the other patrol officers. I guess gather them and send them back to Protectorate? They didn't give us instructions."

Dillon frowned as he picked up the pieces as Skye and Garrett undressed. "I didn't realize how different your Planet Watch uniforms were from standard issue Protectorate Patrol. These are nasty."

"Eh, they probably just grabbed whatever they could find. We made it home safely, that's more important. Father and Pater arrive safely?" Garrett asked.

"About an hour ago. I only know because Kwill stopped by to tell me what was going on. He looked exhausted too."

"I'm not surprised. We can catch everyone up on what happened in the morning. You going to join us?" Skye asked.

"You need some couple time. Jhaeros is already asleep in my bed, so I'll rejoin him."

"Jhaeros, huh?" Garrett grinned and bumped Dillon's shoulder.

"We elves have to stick together, you know."

"Sure, sure." Garrett laughed.

"Thank you for accepting him and helping. They're going through a lot of change," Skye added.

"You make it sound like such a hardship. I like all the new guys, and as a reinstated member of the Summer Court, I take my responsibilities seriously. We have a lot to make up for, and whatever I can do to help Jhaeros adjust...well, it's my honor."

Garrett burst out laughing, and Skye had to bite his lip. He wasn't "trying" to read Dillon, but some things still leaked, like how much Dillon liked the night elf's dick and how good the sex was.

"We won't keep you any longer. Thank you, Dillon." Skye pulled the elf into a tight hug and gave him a quick kiss before watching him return to his room.

So, guessing Jhaeros has won him over? Garrett sent as he headed to the bath.

Think it was his dick and skills using it that sealed it. I didn't try to dig but... Skye followed Garrett so he could get ready. Sorry, I don't have the energy to stay awake. We'll have to make up for it later. I haven't felt this exhausted in a while.

Garrett stepped behind Skye and wrapped his arms around him, kissing his neck. Me, too. Terror over you being hurt took it out of me. I'm glad we're back.

Do you have to be back at the Academy in the morning? Skye finished and climbed into bed.

I should. I don't want to abuse their goodwill. I'm afraid this won't be the last time I'll need their understanding and forgiveness for messing up the schedule. Garrett spooned Skye and pulled him against his body.

Love you. Skye closed his eyes and knew sleep would claim him quickly.

Love you too, baby.

  • Scene 6 *

"Amazing, isn't it?" Charlie asked as he sat on the bench beside Skye.

"It is. Makes it easy to forget you're still on the palace grounds." Skye hadn't realized how much Willow and his grandfather had done in the gardens. It might not be Underhill-level, but it was stunning.

"You doing okay? You didn't seem yourself at breakfast."

"Just tired. It was nice of Pater to arrange for River and me to have the day to recover, but I wish Nik and Garrett could have been with us." Skye took a deep breath, enjoying the sweet floral scent that filled the air. He wasn't sure which of the many blooms he was smelling.

Charlie leaned back and looked up into the tree canopy. Colorful birds were hopping between branches and filling the morning with their chattering and songs.

"You have to go back to that military school thing tomorrow?"

"Yeah. I start the day with Master Chen, then the Academy. Every other day starting tomorrow, I also do a half day at the Mage Hall. Fortunately, Vice Admiral Silvers, Master Mage Quanta, and Master Chen already fought it out."

"Hm...guess it's good to be popular, right?" Charlie grinned.

"I could do with less. They all want to make me work and think their 'area' is the most important."

"Which do you think is most valuable?"

Skye thought for a moment and sighed. "All three. If I'm going to add any value on the Temero, I need the Academy training. If I expect to survive, I need to know how to defend myself and use the magic." Skye smiled. "It's so much fun and more than I ever thought possible."

"You ever pinch yourself to see if it's all a dream?"

Skye laughed. "Daily. Not sure I could have even imagined my life as it is now, and we're coming up on my first-year anniversary. Wow...so much has happened,"

"You're telling me?" Charlie held out his hands and turned them over. "Can you explain this?"

"Sorry, explain what? Your bond mark?" Skye knew the dragon tattoo-like marking had already begun forming, but Kleitos had been keeping it covered with plasti-skin until the ceremony was completed. They weren't ready for others to know that marks had started forming on their own.

Charlie raised an eyebrow. "Like you haven't noticed. Your grandma and I look decades younger than we did when we got here. Feels like it too."

"Yeah, we noticed, but I don't have answers. I asked Kleitos, but he says he's just guessing. Seems that it's almost unheard of to have an older human brought to Draga. He thinks it's because of your connection to Luca. When a dragon bonds with his mate, their life expectancy syncs, and you'll live as long as he does. Kleitos thinks that since Luca is still relatively young, fate or whatever magic is involved, reset your clock. Once they can prove it, the ability to select older humans could be huge for HealthCorps. There would be more potential candidates."

"I'm not complaining." Charlie laughed and blushed. "It's like a dream come true. God, but I love that man...er dragon. And while at first I'd wished I'd met him in my prime, it seems that may not be an issue. Besides that, I still love your gran, and I'd not change a thing about how we got here."

"Maybe selfish of me, but I'm glad you waited to find him since I wouldn't be here otherwise," Skye admitted.

"Exactly! And now I get it all. Sexiest man ever, my best friend, and the best grandsons anyone could ask for."

Skye leaned over and kissed Charlie's cheek. "I love you too." Skye paused. "I was afraid it would be really hard for you and Grandma to adjust. Everything is so...different here."

"True." Charlie was quiet a moment. "Something I need to tell you. I asked Kleitos to keep it quiet, but I know it will eventually come out anyway."

"Is everything okay? You're not sick, are you?" Skye turned a worried look on his grandfather.

"Sick? Nah. But seems that bond thingy is doing some freaky shit to my body. Kleitos says it'll be okay; he's just never seen it start before a human is officially bonded."

"Your body's biologically changing to make you a compatible mate for a dragon."

Charlie's eyes went wide. "How'd..."

"Mine started early and completed faster than the medics had ever seen. I don't know that Kleitos was involved then. It worried the Royal Medics enough I still have periodic check-ups. Still freaks me out that someday I'll likely be giving birth to a dragonling." Skye shuddered.

"You? How do you think I feel? I went from worrying about getting my affairs in order, to finding the man of my dreams, dropping years off my age, and now I have to worry about getting pregnant?" Charlie snorted. "Hell."

"They told me it doesn't happen by accident. There are too many steps. Wait... Did Kleitos think you might be able to?" Skye felt stunned at the idea.

"Yup. He thinks I'll continue to 'regenerate' until I'm on par with Luca."

"Guess you've got things to think about then." Skye struggled to wrap his mind around it. 'Holy shit Mistral, we could have a dragon uncle younger than us!'

'Are you forgetting your grandmother is likely to get pregnant too?'

'Stop! You'll make my head explode.'

"Don't you trample my flowers!" Willow's voice echoed from nearby. He stepped into view moments later. "Hey!"

"I was enjoying your garden, Willow. It's amazing," Skye said and wondered if the guards had inadvertently stepped where they shouldn't while trying to give him space.

"Thanks! We've been adding as many of the Underhill varieties as we could. Not all of them do well this side of the veil, but some have flourished."

"It's that amazing green thumb of yours," Charlie teased.

"Pfft. All of me is green. I told your guards if they jack off, make sure it goes into the flower beds. They love it." Willow bounced over and hugged Skye. He put his lips close to Skye's ear as he whispered. "I made a perfect spot for our guys to have sex. It's the best moss ever, and it helps make the garden grow. I'll make sure to show you."

"That's disturbing, Willow." Skye was still adjusting to Underhill using sex magic; he wasn't sure he wanted it on this side.

"No, Skye, Sex is good. If it isn't, you're doing something wrong. Right, Pops? You and Luca have fucked lots of times in the garden."

Charlie's eyes went wide. "Ah-hem. Well..."

"It's okay, Pops. We all know Willow has no filters, and I think it's awesome that you and Luca are together." Skye didn't want his grandfather to be embarrassed and knew it wouldn't even occur to Willow.

"Did you know your Grandma B. sent seeds for me from Underhill? I have to find the perfect spot to plant them, so I'll be back to take you on our tour once you and Pops finish." Willow barely turned before the garden seemed to swallow him, and he disappeared.

Charlie laughed. "You get used to it, though he's given me more than a few scares, just popping out of nowhere."

"I'm glad you enjoy gardening with him," Skye said.

"Bonus when it's truly magical. And look around, how can you not appreciate that boy's gifts." Charlie leaned over to whisper. "A word of warning: the moss and little grotto he planted are amazing, but bring a blanket."

"I appreciate your sage advice, Pops." Skye bit back a grin as he tried to remain serious. 'Who'd have thought my grandpa would be giving me tips on make-out spots?'

"What big plans do you have for the rest of your day off?"

"Willow wanted to take me and River around to show us all the changes he's made. I'm having lunch with Grandma so she can tell me about your bonding ceremony-not sure if you're joining us?"

"Oh, no." Charlie held up his hands in warding. "That's for her and Luca to work out."

"Chicken. I know she's got Pater and Lady Telawynn helping, so I'm sure it will be spectacular."

"If you can, push for simple."

"I'm not stupid. No way am I getting in the middle of your bonding ceremony plans. How's Grandma adjusting to being in a throuple with a dragon?"

"Better than I expected. Luca is good for her and is the perfect complement, filling in on the pieces we were both missing. He's a romantic for her and is really good at the mushy stuff your grandma craves. For me, well...he's got a dick, that's a biggy. And damn, but he knows how to use it." Charlie let out a happy sigh.

"I'm glad. You both deserve to be happy. I was hoping to spend some time with the guys once they're out of class. I haven't given them enough of my time. Pater promised we can have a big dinner with all the wing."

"The new young men you added are pretty special. Your grandma has adopted all of them and is fussing over them as much as she does the others. It's really nice having a big family-not something I ever expected."

"Pretty sure I've heard you've been spoiling them as much as Grandma." Skye grinned and bumped shoulders with his grandfather. "Thanks for taking them under your wing."

"Pshaw. They're all special."

"But I'm your favorite!" Willow's voice echoed around them.

"Don't let on, but he's right," Charlie whispered. "He's a joy to be around. There's so much joy in his heart, and while I know all too well about his 'nature.'" Charlie glanced around. "There's an innocence and purity in that boy that shines like the sun."

"Yeah, and then he gets that grin..." Skye couldn't help but wonder if their nymph had seduced his grandfather as well. Charlie might not be as hot as his wing-mates, but he was still handsome and getting more so each day.

Charlie laughed. "As you said, things are different here. Luca says it's his mission to reprogram me and get me to accept possibilities."

"Try having your entire wing 'work' on you. They don't understand us or how we were raised. Though I can see their perspective too. I think they may be winning me over." Skye blushed.

"Good. You need to let all that shit go. We were bombarded with so much hate and negativity; the dragons have it right. I'm doing my very best to embrace the change." Charlie waggled his eyebrows.

"Luca is good for you." Skye couldn't remember his grandfather smiling as much as he did now, and the sparkle in his eyes gave Skye hope for an even better future.

"I love him, Skye. Don't misunderstand; I still love Nancy, but Luca. God, that man...he's my world."

"That's what mates do for you." Skye couldn't help but think of Garrett and how much he missed him. Even worse, they'd been too exhausted to reconnect. 'Tonight, Mistral,' Skye promised his dragon.

"Skye! Where the fuck are you hiding?" River's shout echoed in the garden around them.

Charlie chortled. "Your little brother always has been colorful."

The presence of wing-mates washed over Skye as his brother, Gregg, Fiske, and Jerrick stepped into view.

"You know if you use the bond, it will lead you to a wing-mate like a beacon?"

River flipped him off and rolled his eyes while Charlie smirked with a "told you so" look on his face.

"Is it my imagination, or have the gardens grown a lot since the last time we were here?" River asked.

"Spending time here almost every day, I can assure you it's been a gradual change. If Willow continues to encourage and love on each plant, I don't think you'll recognize the place in another year," Charlie said.

"It's starting to have an Underhill vibe." River looked up into the trees with an expression that made Skye wonder if he thought it was a bad thing.

"Don't worry, River. I'm very careful of what I plant. I promise we don't have any harvest vines, carnivorous plants, or poisonous flowers." Willow joined them and sat in Skye's lap, wrapping his hand over his shoulder. His mind brushed against Skye's.

Hey...

You've been gone too much. You owe me a good fuck or maybe three. Willow wiggled his ass, making Skye's dick strain against his pants.

I know, sorry. But Jos is taking very good care of you. Skye tipped up Willow's head so he could give him a gentle kiss.

Mm...Jos is perfect. Willow leaned his forehead against Skye's, and Skye could feel the love Willow held for his mate radiating from him.

"Hey, no sexy times! We got shit to do. Thought we were going to get a tour. Jhaeros told me there are all kinds of hot fuck spots tucked away that we can use. I need them mapped so Nik and I can try 'em out."

"We don't have to wait for Nik. We could check them out and maybe test a few to see which ones are best," Jerrick offered.

"I've missed you, Jerrick," Skye said as Willow crawled out of his lap.

"Words. I hear words. I think you need to prove it to me." Jerrick grinned.

'Mistral, our day is going in a different direction than we planned.'

'Jerrick's ass... I'm good with change.'

  • Scene 7 *

Skye sipped his tea and grinned at how excited his grandmother was over the upcoming bonding ceremony.

"What do you think, Skye? Charlie and I got married in a church and had a very traditional ceremony. I want something different," Nancy said.

"Having the service in the Japanese garden would be lovely. Do you think there's room for everyone? I haven't spent much time there." He was familiar with the torii gate where the entrance was to Underhill, but before today, he'd never explored what was on the other side of the bridge.

"We want to keep the guest list small and private," Nancy said.

"There should be more than enough. We can place some chairs in the rock garden for those who wish to sit. It has a perfect view of the island for the ceremony," Prince Argos added.

"Willow thinks the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom, and Mattekin offered to help make sure. How wonderful is it to have a Druid to help!" Nancy's excitement was palpable.

"You said small. Who are you thinking of including?" Skye set down his cup and noticed that Colonel Devroe had entered but stood against the far wall as if not wanting to interrupt.

'Mistral, that weird feeling is back...'

'I think it's coming from the colonel. It wouldn't be polite to do so now, but when we're finished, we could use our magic sight,' Mistral suggested.

"Ian will be the officiant. And we'll have the royal family and your wing. Oh, I hadn't thought of the vampires..." Nancy frowned.

"I'm sure they'll understand," Skye assured her. He glanced up at Devroe when he heard the colonel's bio-comm alerting him to a call. Turning off sound helped, but his dragon senses were keen enough to hear the vibration. 'Yeah, the weird feeling is definitely him.'

"We're going to have a celebration dinner that evening. They can join us for that." Prince Argos's head turned to take note of Devroe and gave a nod in acknowledgment.

"Does Luca have family that will be attending?" Skye didn't know much about him.

"We'll invite his fathers, brothers, and their mates, but who knows if they'll accept." Nancy looked sad.

"You don't have to, Nancy. Only include them if that's what Luca, Charlie, and you want. I expect they won't be able to resist the opportunity for a private ceremony at the palace." Argos sat back and sipped his tea.

"What am I missing?" Skye could feel the tension but wasn't sure of the reason.

"Luca's family are assholes," Argos muttered.

"Argos, please." Nancy took a deep breath. "Luca and his family have a tenuous relationship. They aren't close and, from what he's been willing to share, have tried to ignore his existence."

"They're social climbers who felt his manifesting as a shrike was an embarrassment to the family." The heat in Argos's words came through strongly.

"But that's not his fault. A dragon form is genetic and would have come through his parents." Skye was appalled.

"Exactly," Argos agreed.

"It's an olive branch. I'm not expecting miracles, but it might at least let him reconnect with his brothers. He believes they didn't feel the same as his parents but were bullied into toeing the line." Nancy didn't look convinced.

"Why not just invite the brothers?" As soon as the words were out, Skye regretted it. All the politics and potential family dynamics tumbled through his head. "Forget I said that."

"That's my boy." Argos grinned. "The connection to the royal family may at least coax them into being more civil. I assure you, Father and I will make it very clear where we stand. Nancy, have you discussed my suggestion on the name with Charlie and Luca?"

"Oh, I thought I'd told you. Luca said he'd be honored."

"Name?" Skye asked.

"Yes, dear. I suggested they keep the connection to house Eklund and become Bianchi-Eklunds," Argos explained.

"Don't you normally give precedent to the dragon's name?" Skye asked.

"There are no laws or rules governing the choice of names. It is more common to give preference to the more powerful or well-placed family name when two dragons mate. It rarely comes up with bond-mates since they are human and not from Draga. I also expect it will come up more with the shifters now becoming mates."

"Grandma, if there are any issues with Luca's family or if they try anything at the ceremony, my wing and I will deal with it. No one is going to mess with your special day." He glanced at Devroe again; someone really wanted to talk to him.

"Thank you, Skye." Nancy reached for his hand and squeezed, giving him an appreciative smile.

"I'd expect nothing less. If you could pardon me for a moment? Colonel Devroe, I assume you have news?"

"I do..." He glanced at his arm again as he approached. "I'm sorry. They're being very persistent."

"Perhaps you should answer it?" Argos raised an eyebrow. "I assure you I won't be offended. Then we can speak without distractions."

"Of course, Your Majesty." Devroe bowed and stepped to the side. "Devroe speaking..."

Skye did his best not to listen in.

"Yes? ...What? ... Are you sure? Father Dragon. No, no, of course I'm pleased... Yes, certainly. I'll make arrangements. ... Thank you." Devroe turned back to them; his face was pale, his eyes wide, and he looked stunned.

"Is everything all right, Colonel?" Argos asked.

"I... I have a mate?"

The thought immediately came to Skye's mind. "A lion shifter."

"How'd... How did you know?" Devroe asked in shock, and Prince Argos gave him a curious look.

"I'm sorry, I meant it as a question." Skye hadn't meant to just blurt it out.

"Yes. That was HealthCorps. They've been trying to reach me as one of the new shifters was a perfect match for me. Father Dragon, I have a mate."

"Sit, Devroe. You look like you're about to faint," Argos ordered.

The colonel complied and put his head in his hands. "My apologies, Your Majesty. I never expected... it's been so long."

"Congratulations on finding your mate. You'll need to take some time off to get to know him and make arrangements. I assume you came with news?" Argos prodded.

"Yes, of course. The dragi you requested have been detained and are ready for questioning."

"Thank you. I'll let Kwill know he can begin. Please let me know who I should deal with in your absence," Argos said.

"I can-"

"No, Colonel Devroe. You have a new mate. He is your priority. I am more than comfortable working with someone from your team. Thank you, now, go see to your arrangements so you can meet your intended."

"Your Majesty." Devroe bowed and hurried out of the room.

"I hope you don't mind, Skye. I asked Kwill to help with some follow-up questioning. When he interrogated the rebels and insurgents from Daico, we discovered there may be some sympathizers or possible spies in the palace." Prince Argos poured another cup of tea.

"Oh, my," Nancy said.

"What will happen to them?" Skye asked.

"If they have betrayed our trust or broken any laws, they'll be turned over to Protectorate Patrol. If they've taken no actions, then we'll rely on Kwill's assessment. We won't punish them for their beliefs; however, we may still have their security clearance revoked or reassign them to non-secured areas so there is no temptation."

"Let me know if you need my help," Skye offered.

"I think it will be fairly simple. Kwill learned of them when he dealt with the surviving dragi who tried to breach the compound. He'll advise us on what he recommends. Would you like to tell us how you knew Devroe's mate was a lion?"

"Um... I didn't really know. There was just this odd feeling when I unblocked the lion shifter's bond; then I felt it again when Colonel Devroe came into the room. I can't explain. It was more of a gut reaction," Skye admitted.

"We'll discuss it later. Now, back to planning..." Argos gave Skye a curious look before turning back to Nancy.

  • Scene 8 *

Skye brushed his teeth and watched Garrett in the mirror. He had a flashback to when his brain had processed that the gorgeous muscle hunk was his forever mate. Given that Garrett was so much larger and a dragon, Skye had assumed that he'd be the one bottoming for the rest of his life.

'Sure didn't work out that way, did it, Mistral?'

Mistral preened. 'It's because he likes our dick so much he can't get enough.'

'I'm glad he's versatile, but I thought I was the one who was going to be protected and cuddled by my big, strong mate.' Skye accepted that with a dragon that was both larger and more powerful than Garrett's, the dynamic had changed. Even in his human form, Skye was stronger. 'Who'd have guessed that he'd have a kink about being at my mercy?'

'It's not a bad kink, and we have to accept that he needs us to protect him. He doesn't always think things through.'

'Yeah, I love him so damn much.' Skye looked up and caught Garrett's dark gaze and realized he'd been stuck in his head. "The new guys are fitting in well, aren't they?"

Garrett smiled and ran his fingers through Skye's hair. "Not sure why you expected otherwise. Kibli is still more nervous than I'd like, and while Revali seems to be doing better, I think he has some serious lust for our were-dagger. It is lust, right, not hero worship?"

"Yeah. But I think it's a combination of both. He's also more relaxed around Venci. Jayce leaves him completely flustered, and he can't seem to put words together with most of the others. He'll get there. Christos and Rilien have taken him under their wing. Kibli too."

"Given how they were raised, I guess we need to give them time. They're not even used to having regular meals or a soft bed to sleep in, and they're like sponges for the affection your grandparents and Pater show them. Maybe we need to spend extra time with them?"

"If we can find the time to carve out, yes, it would be a good idea. Mattekin and Jhaeros are coping better, and Raphael has Bryan. I'm glad Raphael decided to test for the Imperial Guard with Bram and Noud. If he's anywhere near Gilian's skill level, he may test out of most of the training-she did."

"It was the simplest way to keep him together with Bryan." Garrett stepped in behind Skye and moved his arms to wrap around Skye. "And Taleel and Jerrick both gave you assurances they'd make sure Nekko and Cocachet were doing well. I know you were worried about how to connect them with wing-mates."

"I feel the pull on my magic from Copernum. I think being close to him did something. Hey!" Skye squeaked as Garrett pinched and teased his nipples.

"So responsive. I think I need you to myself for a few nights before we start bringing our mates into our bed again," Garrett whispered into Skye's ear as he pressed his erection into the towel around Skye's waist.

"Mm...'kay," Skye moaned. It was getting harder to think as his blood rushed south. 'Yes, yes, this is what we need, Mistral. If you can figure out how we trigger this, we need to remember.'

Garrett pulled the towel away so his naked flesh was pressed against Skye.

"You let Taleel fuck your hot little ass, didn't you, baby?"

"Y...yes." Skye couldn't help but push his ass back against his mate's erection. He could feel the heat of Garrett's cock pressing between his cheeks. Skye thought he should point out that he'd fucked Taleel's dragon hole more times than he'd taken the ebony dragon dick, but the words wouldn't form. He loved it when Garrett took control.

"Mm-hm. Such a hungry boy. But you need to remember you're mine. This slick arse was made just for me." Garrett pressed two fingers into Skye's opening, easily sliding inside. "So wet."

Skye thought he should be embarrassed. He struggled with some of the changes and had a hard time wrapping his mind around his ability to produce slick in his ass. He knew the Skye of a year ago would never have believed it.

'Don't fight it. We want to be open and ready for our mate. Just like he is for us. If it turns him on, maybe he'll do it again,' Mistral said.

"Get on the bed, Skye. I want to fuck you and remind you that you're my dragon," Garrett ordered. "Don't forget to shield; I'm not going to hold back, and let's not share. I don't want you distracted by how good you feel."

A chill went up Skye's spine, and he could feel his cock and ass leaking from how aroused he was. He crawled onto the bed and lay on his back, waiting for Garrett to join him. The stunning golden-bronze bodybuilder stood at the edge of the bed, staring at him; the glow of his dragon, Rett, shone in his eyes.

"No, on your hands and knees."

'Yes, yes, yes,' Mistral whispered as Skye complied, giving him an image of wiggling his ass as he presented himself.

"Father Dragon was so good to me. I've got the hottest mate in the Empire." Garrett's hands slid up the back of Skye's thighs and over his ass, gently separating his globes. "Do you know how many dragons are out there right this minute, fantasizing about this hole and dreaming of what it tastes like?"

Skye spread his knees farther and lifted to encourage Garrett to do more. "Please."

"Please, what?"

"I need you to take me."

Garrett's breath ghosted over Skye's hole, causing him to clench. "So beautiful..."

Skye buried his face in a pillow to keep the embarrassing sounds from filling the room. He needed this and would gladly smack down his prior self for being squeamish about having his mate rim him. It only took one experience with Garrett's tongue for Skye to be fully onboard.

The tip of Garrett's tongue teased his opening, and Skye gripped the pillow tighter and fought the urge to push back to get more.

"You taste so good, baby." Garrett lapped at his entrance until Skye thought he'd scream. Then the tongue pushed into his dragon hole, and Skye groaned into the pillow. As he felt his mate go deeper and deeper inside him, he struggled not to sob with pleasure. No one he'd been with did this as well as his bond mate. A shudder of pleasure ripped through his body.

'You should thank me,' Mistral chided.

Even in his mind, it took a moment for the question to form. 'Why?' As soon as the thought formed, Skye realized the answer. When he got a dragon, and his body changed, his insides transformed, and not only did he produce slick to make sex easier, he also got the sensitive nubs lining his passage that took sex to a new level and gave him anal orgasms.

Skye bit his lip to keep from complaining when Garrett pulled away; he desperately wanted more and missed the sensation of having something inside him. Though he was hoping for something much larger.

"I swear, you produce more slick each time we fuck. So good, and Father Dragon made sure you tasted like my very favorite things...perfect, just for me."

Skye startled when Garrett pushed his fingers inside him and began moving in and out. His hand slid down Skye's taint and wrapped around his cock, and he began to stroke.

"You're so fucking hard."

He moaned into the pillow, overwhelmed as his ass was fingered and his dick stroked. It wouldn't take long for Skye to cum; he'd already had his first anal orgasm.

"You're ready for me, aren't you, baby?"

He turned his head enough to answer. "Yes. Need you. I'm close."

Garrett withdrew his fingers and pressed his cock against Skye's dragon hole. His mate slowly slid in, stretching him open. There was no pain, only the pleasure of being full and feeling Garrett's large cock sliding deep inside him where it belonged. He could feel every inch and even discern the larger glans and ridge as it passed over his nubs. Garrett stilled once he was fully seated.

"Mmmmm..." Skye lifted and pushed back, only to find Garrett's hands holding his hips still.

"Not this time, baby. I'm in charge, and I'm going to use your sweet ass the way I want." Garrett began moving but slowly enough that Skye wanted to scream in frustration.

"This sweet hole was made just for me. A perfect fit." Garrett bent, pressing his chest against Skye's back and kissing up his shoulder. "You feel so fucking good, baby."

A perfect fit was something that Skye could agree with. No one's cock felt better than his mate's. It was big enough to make him feel stuffed full, hit all the right places, and bring him to orgasm without touching his dick. Though he did like having his cock and nipples played with while he was fucked.

'We could nudge him,' Mistral whispered.

It took some effort, but Skye used his telekinesis to massage Garrett's prostate while he was pounding him and then added the sensation of having his nipples teased. His mate's tempo sped up, and Garrett growled.

"Not playing fair, baby. But fuck that feels good. Maybe I should do the same for you?" He reached around Skye and grabbed a nipple between each thumb and forefinger. Pulling and tugging as he fucked, it was Skye's turn to groan.

"Oh, God."

"Yeah, that's my man. You love this! Look at you glowing already. Cum for me."

The orgasm burst from Skye, and his channel clamped around his mate. He came hard, over and over as Garrett continued to fuck him and savage his nipples.

"Gonna fuck every drop out of you!" Garrett's voice had gone deep and raspy.

"Oh!" Skye screamed into the pillow as the pleasure was almost too much. He could feel the wet heat of Garrett's cum filling him, and Mistral cooed in bliss.

"Going to fill you up, baby. Make sure all our shifter brothers can smell my seed inside you so they'll know what we've been doing. You'd like that, wouldn't you? Maybe, I should let them join us after you're good and fucked. Bet you'd like...hmm...maybe Jayce, Chaz, and Corbin could take turns breeding your creamy dragon hole?"

"Garrett..." Skye whimpered, his mind filling with the images.

"You like that idea. Maybe get even more of our brothers, and once you're nice and stretched, sloppy with everyone's loads 'cause your body can't absorb the jizz fast enough, have Mattekin and Arcturus take turns."

Garrett pressed Skye into the mattress with his body and ground his dick into Skye's dragon hole, giving Skye wave after wave of pleasure.

"I'm going to take such good care of you..."

Skye pushed the pillow away and gasped for breath. He was too far gone in euphoria to respond, and he'd long ago lost the ability to use his powers on his mate. All he could do was hang on.

  • Scene 9 *

Skye closed his eyes to recenter himself. He was losing his concentration. He pulled on his magic and tried again. I can do this. He reached with his magic and reformed the sphere that would hold the smoke once it was separated.

"Remember, you know how air should feel; concentrate on what doesn't belong," Master Mage Quanta encouraged.

Looking at the yellow smoke rising from the bowl, Skye made himself aware of the grit and other particles that clouded before him and did his best to ignore the smell. He'd done this several times using his sight, but Quanta had insisted he do it without looking, as not everything was visible.

It seemed to take forever, but slowly, the smoke drifted into the globe, where it swirled and darkened.

"Beautiful, well done!" Quanta praised when all of the smoke had been captured.

Skye sagged in his seat and wiped the sweat from his brow.

"Now, we'll try it with two." Master Mage Quanta set another bowl on the table, and it burst into flame. This time, a pinkish-white plume rose. "Create two vessels and separate the pink from the yellow. Not using your eyes. Feel the essence of the sulfur and ginger that burn; they should feel distinct from each other. When you can sense what is not air and identify it, you can separate it. Once you've mastered this, you should be able to pull poison or any other substance without affecting the air you need to breathe."

Exhaustion made him wonder if he had needed to make his request so urgent. Explaining what had happened and his inability to save himself from the sleeping gas had prompted the master mage to change their agenda for the day's studies. Quanta didn't completely agree with River that you could do "anything" with magic but did think Skye had been limiting himself.

The yellow and pink smoke had intertwined and mixed as it rose from the bowls. Skye could understand how his sight would have betrayed him, whereas his magic senses could feel the difference.

"That's the way. Slow and steady. Don't rush." Quanta's tone was encouraging.

Skye managed to separate the two gases successfully, only to have Quanta demand he repeat it several more times.

"I think that will be enough for today. Release your magic and take a deep breath. You've worked hard."

"I feel drained," Skye admitted.

"You are." Quanta dispelled the globes holding the smoke and snuffed out the remains of burning embers. "You've depleted your magic stores but they should recharge overnight. As we've discussed, that's the difference between a dragon and a mage. Now, something we haven't tried..." Quanta went quiet for a moment, and Skye turned to look at the mage.

"Yeah?"

"We should practice sharing magic. I know you've done some spooling of magic with another when setting bonds and when we worked on the curses. But I think it would be good if your wing-mates with magic learned how to share. It could make a difference in a critical situation if you or others had more power to draw on. Maybe we'll even practice feeding your magic to Rilien or Mattekin."

"Do you think it will work?" Skye asked.

"What? Of course it will work. I'd expect you'll be able to do so more easily because of the wing-mate bonds. You're already connected to them, so the magic shouldn't fight you."

"I agree it might be useful. Have you had any luck with the other spells we talked about? I know you just returned, but..."

"And to think you're the patient one." Quanta laughed. "Your brother asked the same before I sent him off for his lesson. Yes and no. The bag of holding thing would not be a spell but rather an enchanted object. We haven't found any references to such an item, and several of my better mages think it would be improbable. But we'll keep looking. On a more positive note, the idea of a dragon being able to shift with clothing seems reasonable, and one of our archivists believes he's seen the spell. It may not work for all dragons since most aren't nearly as strong as you and River, but it may work for the ones with a decent amount of magic."

"That would be great." Skye began wondering if there would be a variant that they could cast for the other shifters. Perhaps Rilien could do it if it was too much for him or River. Or maybe they could have someone create a charm that could hold the spell.

"Rest for a few minutes, and then come to my office. I stayed up most of the night looking at those blades, but I'd like to talk to you where we've got more privacy." Quanta gave him a smile and stepped out of the training room.

'Why is using magic so tiring, Mistral?'

'Perhaps it wouldn't be if you practiced like the master mage told you to?' Recrimination seemed to come through too easily in his dragon's mind voice. 'We also were not at our best to start the day. Not that I'm complaining.'

Skye felt his face heat, and he adjusted how he was sitting. He wasn't sore, but his body remembered well what had gone on the night before. 'That was pretty awesome.'

'It was, but I'm still suspicious since it was very out of character for our mate.'

'But it was exactly what I...er we, needed.' Skye stood and reminded himself that the idea of having Garrett's cum sloshing around inside him was only a vivid imagination. His body would have absorbed it hours ago. 'Shit, exactly what we needed!'

'My thought as well. Do you think Kwill might have put the idea in his head?'

'Ugh. Little pervert. He'd do exactly that. I'm not sure whether to be angry or thank him.'

'Perhaps confirm that he did so before making accusations?'

"Good point," Skye said aloud as he opened the door. He hadn't made it out of the corridor when someone called.

"Skye!" Rilien ran up and hugged him. "It's so cool having you here. Are you done?"

"Hey, Ril. No, I'm going to Quanta's office. Want to join me?"

"You sure it's okay?"

"It's about that gift from Keeper. He wanted to talk in private, but we don't have secrets in the wing, right?" Skye made sure to look Rilien in the eye and pay attention. After his kidnapping, they all worried about him and hoped his trust would rebuild.

"Right. That's exciting. They're so cool!" Rilien leaned in for another hug as they walked.

"Did you see any of the other guys? River, Mattekin, and at least four of the others should still be around."

"That's what I was doing. My class got out early, so I was checking the training rooms to see who else was finished, and I found you. All the other doors were closed." Rilien glanced around and pulled Skye to a stop before whispering. "I heard River swearing, and there were really loud noises coming from the room."

Skye bit back a laugh. "I'm sure he's fine. Master Mage Quanta insists they use the strongest shields and have at least two mages when he's in lessons."

"Oh." Rilien's eyes went wide, and they continued to the master mage's office. The door was open when they arrived.

"Master Mage?" Skye called at the entryway.

"Please, come in. Hello, Rilien. I hope you had a good day."

"I did. My spell made three people invisible!"

"Congratulations. Won't be long, and you'll be able to do the whole wing. Never doubt your abilities, Rilien. You have incredible potential." Master Mage Quanta gripped Rilien's shoulders and pulled him into a hug when he finished speaking.

"Wow, that's amazing, Ril!" Skye felt guilty for not giving his elf enough time. He had no idea of what Rilien had been studying or how far he'd come. It was surreal to think that mages were real, and then an idea struck him. "Quanta, I have a really off-the-wall question."

The master mage turned to him with a raised brow. "Never. You?"

Skye blushed but forged on. "In the stories we have on Earth, mages and witches sometimes have familiars. Is that a thing?"

Quanta gestured for them to sit at the small table. He chose one of the chairs and pondered for a moment. "It is, but the practice fell out of favor centuries ago. Having a creature tied to you in the modern world is a challenge. Space travel would be next to impossible, and city living would greatly limit the feasibility of many types of familiars. You don't get to pick. Rilien, do you happen to remember seeing any in the fae court?"

"No. Queen Caladwen forbade the practice. She thought they would be used to spy on her. There may have been elf mages who were far from court who had them, but I never saw any."

"I can see the challenges, but I still rather like the idea." Skye was disappointed; he really thought a familiar would be good for Rilien.

Quanta unrolled the oiled leather wrap surrounding Keeper's gift to Skye. "You ready?"

"I think. Is it bad?" Skye felt a tingle of concern.

"Not at all." The master mage began removing the objects once the scroll was spread out. He carefully withdrew them one by one and set them on display. Several had scabbards or sheaths, and Quanta carefully removed them.

"Whoa," Rilien whispered reverently. He reached out and let his hand hover above one of the daggers. "Elvish."

"They are, and they are extremely rare and valuable. Not quite priceless, but close. Any dragon would preen to have these in his hoard. They are all made of elvish steel-which technically isn't steel-but you get the idea. You can tell by the swirling pattern and faint glow. The mineral used in forging is only found in Underhill."

"I don't know what some of those things are," Skye admitted.

"This is a set. You can see that all the pieces have similar gems and patterns. Interesting that they shine and sparkle like Mistral's eyes, don't you think?"

"He's right, Skye!" Rilien grinned and looked at Skye. "Like diamonds."

"A type of diamond-again, only found in Underhill. From what I've found, I believe this set was once used by the King of the Summer Court. There were likely several in different patterns and gems that would coordinate with his robes. But don't misunderstand; these are not decorative ceremonial blades. While small, that dagger in your hand could cut through our strongest Imperial armor like butter."

Master Mage Quanta took an even smaller blade, not much longer than Skye's finger and reached across the table, grabbing Skye's hand, and ran the blade over his palm. Skye cried out and snatched back his hand, looking for something to staunch the blood...that wasn't there?

"Also spelled," Quanta cut in, interrupting Skye's panic. "They cannot be used against their owner. Some of them are imbued with other magic. May I continue?"

"Um, sure." Skye looked at his palm again and flexed his hand.

"The two long knives would be worn in a belt or sash, resting at your hips. The smaller daggers would go in a vambrace or thigh sheath. The finger blades would be worn in a robe or waistcoat as decoration but work similarly to throwing stars. These scrolled pieces go around your biceps; they are enchanted to ward off magical attacks. The decorative ear cuffs are spelled to enhance your hearing."

"If these were made for the king of the fae, is it okay for me to even have them? I'm not an elf, and don't think I'm a member of the Court of Light," Skye asked.

"Beyond that Keeper gave them to you? I think yes. We proved it just now when the spells recognized you as their owner. Magic is not subjective, so you must have enough fae blood in your veins to satisfy."

"River is going to be so jealous," Rilien said as he picked up an ear cuff to admire. He chuckled. "It will make you look like you have elf ears."

"It was designed for an elf, so not surprising that it would follow their form." Quanta picked up the other cuff and turned it in the light. Now that Skye knew what it was, he could see that it was in the shape of an ear and was encrusted with gems that would sparkle as you moved your head. There were even dangling pieces. 'Mistral, I'm not sure I could wear these. They're a bit over the top.'

'Nonsense, they will look amazing, and they honor our fae heritage.'

"I know the pieces are all elaborate, and you may hesitate to use them but for the most formal occasions. However, I'd ask you to reconsider. All of these items are functional, ostentatious, and beautiful but also useful. I'd recommend having your armor and some other garments modified to at least allow for the blades. I agree the ear cuffs will draw attention." Quanta chuckled.

"You think?" Skye set the piece back down. "Dragon hearing is already pretty phenomenal, so keeping those for special occasions shouldn't be a problem."

"I agree, but dragons like sparklies. You'd set new fashion trends." Quanta winked, and Skye felt heat rise to his face thinking of the last trends he'd set-at The Lust Factory.

Skye was opening his mouth to thank Quanta for his efforts when a wave of terror washed through him. Seconds later, before he'd had time to process, additional emotions bombarded him: fear, anxiety, worry. Skye toppled from the chair as he and Mistral tried to regain control.

"Skye? Skye?" voices echoed.

"Breathe," Quanta commanded. "Pull up your shields, NOW!"

Skye gasped and felt the master mage rubbing his back as he'd pulled him against him.

"That's it. Keep breathing. Rilien, get him some water."

"It's one of our wing-mates. Something's happened," Rilien said.

"Master Mage," a new voice interrupted.

"Rilien, hold him and see if you can get him to drink. I'll be right back."

Skye was vaguely aware of being moved and felt Rilien wrap around him. His head was still spinning as he sipped at the glass of water.

"It's going to be fine, Skye. Nothing to panic over. Look at me," Quanta said.

Skye looked up into the master mage's eyes and saw concern but also confidence.

"There you are. Seems that Jhaeros came into his power. Octus notified me that the situation is well in hand and everyone is fine. They've sedated Jhaeros until we can get to him."

"Octus?" Skye rasped.

"One of the court mages who resides at the Palace. He's been watching for signs and was ready when he felt Jhaeros's power. Unfortunately, it has been this way for almost all the dark fae."

"What do you mean?" Rilien asked.

"Having been on Hell World, their natural gifts and magic were repressed. Once they're here long enough, it returns, but often violently. That's no indicator of their gift or the type of magic; simply there's so much built up magic it has to get out. I'm sure what you felt was Jhaeros's terror at the unexpected."

"And the others' reactions," Rilien added.

Skye took a deep breath. Carefully he lowered his shield and reached through the bond to Jhaeros. He confirmed that the night elf was sleeping. He felt a brush from Christos and opened his mind to the panther.

Everything okay?

Sorry, I think so. There's a mage here who says Jhaeros got his magic, and he put him to sleep. Are you coming home? Everyone's scared, Christos asked.

I'm with Master Mage Quanta now. I'll be back as soon as I can, Skye sent and withdrew, putting his shields back in place.

"Ready to check on our new mage?" Quanta asked as he offered a hand to pull Skye to his feet.

"Mage?" Rilien asked.

"I would assume so. Coming into his innate gift as an elf shouldn't have alerted Octus. We'll find out for certain when I examine him. Skye, are you able to check in with your men? They'll be quite distraught if you're gone when they finish."

Skye closed his eyes and reached out to those who'd come to the Mage Halls. He hadn't brought any additional guards since he had wing-mates with him. It took a moment for them to pause in what they were doing. Once he was assured his wing-mates could listen, Skye updated them on what was happening and his imminent departure for the palace. While several were still in the midst of lessons, Kuai and Jayce assured him they were through and could escort him. The others would return with River.

They waited in the lobby of the Mage Hall for the two dragons to join.

"This is one of those times I wish the emperor's security didn't prohibit us from teleporting into the palace. It would save a lot of time," Quanta bemoaned.

"Great way for assassins to get in, I'm sure. I don't think you'll win that argument with Colonel Devroe," Skye said.

"Too true." The master mage shifted on his feet impatiently.

"Do you have to be really powerful to use portal spells?" Rilien asked.

"A mage can often teleport his or herself small distances at the fifth level. Like any spell, some have more aptitude for it than others. Rilien, I fully expect you to reach level ten, which is the highest we measure. Unless you get lazy, you have the potential."

"I think I've been scolded," Rilien muttered.

Skye wondered what his potential was and debated a moment before asking. "Quanta, do you think I'll get to level five? Or do you know what my potential is?"

Quanta was quiet for a moment. "I'm not evading your question, but the answer is Dragons can't be classified in levels as we do mages. Your spell casting and use of magic work differently. Dragons have affinities for specific types of spells, often associated with their dragon form and element. Consequently, if your element is fire, you'll be able to cast related spells at a much higher level than water spells. In your case, I still haven't determined what your affinities are. I also don't think you've completed manifesting your powers. You already surpass the strongest level ten mage for telepathy and shielding."

"But you said I had magic potential." Skye wanted clearer answers.

"You and River test with the potential of a master mage. Most dragons I've tested aren't anywhere close to that. But as I said, they may cast some spells at a much higher level and some not at all. You'll know when I do. Please be patient. There haven't been platinum dragons in centuries, and we're just now digging into the archives to learn more about how dragons work with magic."

"Thank you for trying." Skye let out a deep sigh. He knew the master mage was being as honest and forthright as he could be, but it was frustrating. He would have to trust that they'd learn more and leave his questions for another time. Skye needed to focus on Jhaeros. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait longer as Kuai and Jayce joined them.

"Ready?" Quanta looked at Skye with concern and perhaps some empathy.

"Yeah, let's go, we've got a brother who needs us."
