Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 62: Sing to Me by Tripp Savidge
- Scene 1 *
'There's no reason to worry. It's not like we did anything wrong. It was before you could hear me, so no saying it was my fault,' Mistral warned.
'That hadn't even occurred to me. Though... if you try for a do-over, we'll have words.' Skye still had occasional nightmares about his captivity, but Kwill had done something, so they weren't nearly as intense. Maybe I should see if he could do the same for Jacovy, Skye thought.
He looked at the large green where he waited. It wasn't exactly a park, but perhaps it was the centaur version of one. While the town looked "mostly" like what he'd expect elsewhere on Draga, there were enough differences to make it feel "other."
"I may get a complex if you keep ignoring me," Taleel said.
"Sorry. This feels awkward."
Taleel laughed. "Skye, you should be a pro at awkward. You seem to be a magnet for situations that would test most dragons."
"Tell me." Skye sighed. "Why does he want to talk? I've tried my best to forget."
'Except for the part where you finally got to meet me,' Mistral reminded him.
"Yeah, except for shifting into a dragon for the first time and meeting Mistral."
"I can't imagine not having Jett with me. I know some dragons don't connect with their other half until the change, but he's always been a part of me."
"He could speak to you before you were able to shift?" Skye didn't realize that was possible.
"I don't remember a time before. We're taught that it's different for each dragon, though more than half don't hear them until they're through puberty and begin the change. I always considered myself fortunate."
"Was it the same for your brothers? You said you had brothers, right?"
"I have two older-both bonded-and one younger. My younger brother, Jakeel, has always heard his dragon, but the other two didn't until their first shift. It's been somewhat of a sore point as Jak's dragon is on the mischievous side and frequently gets him into trouble." Taleel smiled broadly as he looked up at the sky.
"From that look, I'm guessing you two are close?" Skye said.
Taleel laughed. "I can practically hear my father sighing." He turned and grinned with a sparkle in his silvery eyes. "Jak and I are much alike, though he's much younger, about Nik's age, and still completing his studies. I miss him."
"You have some time; why not visit?" It dawned on Skye that many of his wing-mates had family and siblings they likely hadn't seen in a while.
"Jakeel isn't on Draga. He's studying to be an archaeologist, and the best place to do that is at Clawborn University on Terrae, the original home world of the Dragon Empire. It's barely more than a preserve and outpost now, but the university kept its presence on Terrae even through the wars and exodus."
"I guess it's not close?"
"No, and Terrae is also not somewhere you casually visit. While there are abundant historical sites and history, the planet has not yet recovered and is considered hostile. Extreme weather patterns, seismic activity, radioactive zones, and little to no infrastructure. They don't expect Terrae will be able to support life for another millennia or more. The university and few science settlements all must be self-sustaining and bring in or produce their own food."
"And he wants to be there, why?"
"If you're trying to learn about dragon history..." Taleel shrugged.
"I hope I get to meet him someday. Guessing if the place is that dangerous, he had to sign off on all kinds of disclaimers first." Skye didn't have trouble imagining, but he also wasn't sure he'd have had the courage to do it-no matter how curious he was.
"He did. I saw him a little over a year ago. Even that's complicated because he had to undergo an extensive quarantine and tests before they'd let him leave," Taleel said.
"Hopefully he likes his studies and the career he picks if he's making that much of an investment."
"He loves it." Taleel turned and looked over Skye's shoulder before giving a nod. "I think Jacovy is here." Taleel stood and put a hand on Skye's shoulder. "I'll be nearby, and your guards are still watching. Use your mind voice if you need me."
"Thanks." Skye watched the centaur approach and realized that he didn't know if it was Jacovy. His memories of their encounter were hazy at best, and all he could recall for sure was dark hair and beard and that the human portion had been more muscled than Garrett with a massive chest and arms. He didn't remember the face at all.
The centaur drew close and bowed his head. "Prince Skye?"
"Jacovy?"
"Yes. Thank you for agreeing to speak with me. I'm sure it is uncomfortable for you." The centaur didn't raise his eyes. It gave Skye the opportunity to really look at him. Jacovy was handsome, and while the Henley-like shirt hid details, he was most definitely built. His hair was dark brown like his beard and was pulled back in a loose braid that hung past his shoulders. The horse part of him was a dark chestnut color and as massive as the rest of him.
"I'd say awkward, and it is likely no better for you. I'm sorry for what happened to you."
Jacovy grunted. "At least there's some satisfaction in knowing that the kidnappers are dead, though we still don't know who was paying them."
"Not everyone, but the Emperor and his people have tried and convicted several of those involved. I'm afraid it was a much larger operation than anyone expected. They're still investigating." Skye shrugged, hoping the centaur might relax.
"That is good to know. I've not seen anything about the slavers in the news vids. But that wasn't the reason for my request. I wanted to offer my apologies in person and ask if there was anything I could do to make it right."
"You don't have to do that but thank you. You had no more choice than I did. I never thought to ask; you were badly hurt. Are you recovered?" Skye knew the centaur had fought valiantly during their rescue, but the details of what happened to the others and their escape were lost in the drug haze.
Jacovy shuffled as if nervous. "Yes and no. Most of my injuries were treated and healed over time. Unfortunately the damage done by the drugs they used to force my rut could not be fixed. I am sterile, and there will be no foals in my future. How about you? Did you fully recover?"
Skye could feel the sadness and wished there was something he could do. He did a quick scan but neither his magic nor his telekinesis showed him anything he could fix. But he was certain that Jacovy would have been given the best medical care the Empire could provide. Pater had personally overseen those who'd been kidnapped.
'Skye, this may not be the time for it, but I'm starting to get suspicious over the coincidences,' Mistral whispered.
'We can talk later.'
"I'm sorry, Jacovy. Yes, I was very lucky. Shifting so soon after seemed to have healed everything except my memories." Skye paused and looked back to the centaur, who finally met his gaze. He had deep brown eyes. "You don't owe me anything and there is nothing to make up to me."
"I disagree but will defer to you for now. I confess that I'm relieved you don't remember clearly. I was terrified that I'd physically hurt you or given you mental scars from..." Jacovy waved his hand as his face reddened. "You know..."
Skye burst out laughing. Perhaps it was a release of tension. Or maybe it was Mistral's commentary replaying in his mind.
"No, no. That part I remember, and don't worry, it was disconcerting but very pleasurable in the end. Not that I wish to repeat it," Skye was quick to add.
"Oh, goddess." Jacovy covered his face with his hands. "Let's not tell Tiessa that we enjoyed it. She's already upset enough, and I think I finally have her convinced I am not interested in any males, dragons or otherwise."
'Someone is lying,' Mistral sing-songed in Skye's mind. 'And did you notice that slip?'
'Shush. We need Tiessa's help, and I don't intend a repeat, regardless of what you say.'
"Of course. I wasn't trying to embarrass you further, just wanted you to know that you had nothing to 'make up for,' in that regard." Skye tried to keep his face neutral as Mistral taunted him.
"Goddess, I wasn't expecting... yeah, so. Any thoughts on the elf queen?"
Skye laughed again at the awkward segue. "Not a queen anymore, just sayin' and no. I thought I'd visit again before dinner and see if there's anything I missed. The first time was a bit of a shock and I doubt I was thinking clearly."
"It's not looking good." Jacovy's voice was solemn and carried his concern.
"No, it's not. Seems pretty clear that we need to get her to Underhill. Do you know any more of what Keeper told your chief when he visited."
Jacovy raised an eyebrow and scowled.
Skye could already guess part of what the centaur would say.
"The fae are not known for clear communications. I heard it secondhand from Tiessa, but I gather it was a lot of words that said nothing. Short version, we had to wait for you."
"You realize you and I are both considered fae?" Skye grinned.
"No need to be insulting. There's fae and then there's 'the' fae. I'm pretty sure the elves would agree." Jacovy huffed with an almost disturbing horse-like sound. "My experience is that the lovely court of summer believes themselves to be far above all others."
"That, I'm not going to argue. Though I can say I've had the pleasure of meeting several who don't fit the stereotype. The Queen Mother, Telawynn, being one."
"And have you met any of the 'others'?" Jacovy's smile said he already knew the answer.
"Mm-hm... They were the ones who tried to kill me. Didn't go so well for them."
Jacovy let out a deep laugh and gripped Skye's shoulder. "You are not what I expected. Oh, I remembered how attractive you were, but we didn't have a lot of time to talk."
"What's next?"
"I keep my mate sane and grounded, and you figure out how to save that foal."
"That's my plan."
Jacovy gave a nod. "I'm sure we'll be speaking again soon. I think we're all gathering for dinner later."
"Maybe we'll know more by then." Skye watched as Jacovy trotted away, still thinking it odd that the mythical creature and he had shared the ultimate intimacy.
'We could do it again,' Mistral prompted.
'Drop it, Mistral. He's going through enough already and we have more than enough men in our wing that don't think they're getting enough of me. I don't want or need to add more.'
'Wonder why our magic didn't notice him...'
'If we believe Kwill, then it's because he doesn't have anything that the wing requires for us to be successful.'
'But he's got a big dick!' Mistral protested.
Skye sighed and felt Taleel's hands grip his shoulders before he began to work on the tight muscles in his neck.
"I have this feeling that you and your dragon are having a disagreement." Taleel chuckled.
"How can you tell? Not so much a disagreement as Mistral and I don't always have the same priorities."
"Ha! I know that feeling. Jett's primary mission is to find our mate. Following that it's anything that would make us more appealing or able to provide for our mate when we find him."
"That's sweet. Mistral is usually focused on sex." Skye moaned as Taleel found a knot and began working it out.
"Maybe our dragons balance us. Left to myself, a mate is the last thing on my list, and we all know you seem to have this aversion to sex."
Skye snorted. "Pretty sure that I've proven I don't. I'll grant you I may have some guilt issues, but it's getting better."
"I'm glad Kwill is helping you, and I'm not going to lecture you. As long as I'm on the fuckable list I'll keep quiet."
"Jerk." Skye couldn't help the smile. "My thoughts always get darker and more negative when I'm stressed. And have I mentioned how much I hate being herded and manipulated?"
"Haven't seen it, but the others have shared. You think it's happening again."
Skye rolled his eyes. "Duh..."
"We have several hours before dinner, why don't I distract you. I bet you haven't practiced your kata in an age. You'll still have time to check on the foal again, but I think you'll be in a better frame of mind," Taleel said.
'YES!' Mistral mentally shouted.
"Sure, we could do that."
- Scene 2. *
"Pretty sure you're going to have an audience." Corbin gathered Skye's discarded clothing.
Skye hadn't thought to bring workout clothes, but he was able to borrow a pair of Feired's shorts that were snug but would work. Edwin assured him the centaurs wouldn't be offended. And the weather was nice enough that he didn't worry about being cold.
"Taleel, shouldn't River learn this too?" Skye looked at his brother standing to the side speaking with Feired and it occurred to him that he'd not been included.
"Whoa there. Don't be dragging me into your shit!" River scowled but Skye picked up on the conflicted emotion.
"Huh... Yes, it would be good for him, especially since he's designated himself as your protector. It's somewhat different from what Master Chen teaches." Taleel stretched as he spoke.
"How is it different?" Braden had found a spot in the shade and made himself comfortable.
"The Warrior Kin was specifically developed for dragon warriors, and while it follows the same discipline as the martial arts Master Chen teaches, you have to be a dragon to do many of the moves, and it can only be taught by another master," Taleel explained.
"But Master Chen's a dragon," River objected.
"True, but he follows a different path. And while he served the Empire, I doubt you'd find a dragon who'd mastered the Warrior Kin willing to train an assassin. I'm sure you can see the benefit of knowing more than one style?"
'Huh...' Skye thought to Mistral. 'I hadn't realized the distinction.'
'If it was intended for elite soldiers, they may find an assassin's ways less than honorable. It is more like dueling with rules than simply fighting to win.'
'But if you combined the moves from various disciplines, you'd have a better arsenal and be able to both surprise and adapt to your opponent,' Skye reasoned.
'I think that was Taleel's point to your brother.'
I guess you have a good point, River interrupted.
River! You've got to stop listening in on my thoughts. It's creepy! Skye scolded.
Eh. I'll work on it, cause sometimes it's just gross. But you'll be glad to know I already mentioned it to Beck.
"Whenever you two are done." Taleel gave them a knowing look.
Skye was surprised at how quickly the moves came back to him. That wasn't the challenge. His issue was how hot Taleel looked in the form fitting shorts with the sheen of perspiration glistening on his sculpted body. He'd run through the kata twice when Taleel gave him a reprieve.
"Your turn, River. You've been watching and you already know most of the elements." Taleel beckoned to Skye's brother who stood on the sidelines.
"You got this, River," Corbin encouraged.
"Skye, you were awesome." Braden handed Skye a towel when he dropped to the ground beside his assistant.
"I agree with Taleel that this will be good for River." Feired joined them and sat beside Skye, pulling his knees up to his chest as they watched. "Given how River likes blades, there are several moves that lend themselves."
"I remember someone telling me that they'd seen the Warrior Kin done with swords," Braden said.
"I've seen it done but only barehanded." Feired turned to Skye. "It earned you a lot of credibility with the military-types. I think it will be good for River, too."
"Hm. We probably ought to make sure he has an audience once he's got it down. I'll make a note to speak with Pater when I talk to him later." Braden pulled up his bio-comm while he spoke.
"You've been on that thing most of the time we've been here. Has it all been for Prince Argos?" Feired asked.
"Yes." Braden let out a deep sigh.
"If it gets to be too much, let me know. Pater promised me that he wouldn't overwork you." Skye looked at his assistant with concern, keeping his shields down in case there was anything he should know.
"I'm fine, promise. Ouch..." Braden winced in sympathy as they watched River take a hard fall.
"Anyone else think Taleel is gorgeous?" Skye was trying not to think about what he wanted to do to the sexy black dragon-but it was a losing battle.
Feired snorted. "Everyone thinks he's hot. And I don't mean just our wing. But he also has a reputation for being out of reach of most dragons."
'Not for us,' Mistral gloated, pulling up images of Taleel sprawled on Skye and Garrett's bed with his leg's spread wide.
A loud burst of thunder sounded, startling them.
"Whoa." Feired stood and turned, looking at the sky. It was blue and sunny overhead. Feired pointed to the north. It wasn't visible until they stood but just over the treetops dark clouds had formed.
"We ought to move inside." Corbin joined them and had his comms pulled up. "Major thunderstorms moving our way." He lowered his arm and looked at where Taleel and River were still practicing. "Go on. I'll let them know and stay with River. I'll keep two of the guards with us as well."
"Is there a rush?" Braden dusted off his pants and turned to look at the horizon.
"It's going to be a big one. You felt that thunder, let's not take chances. According to the radar it's moving fast." Corbin pointed toward the cluster of buildings where the centaurs had offered them rooms.
Another loud rumble reinforced Corbin's point.
The centaurs had provided them with rooms set up for humans and they'd decided that it worked best to split into pairs. No one wanted to be by themselves, and the beds weren't large enough to accommodate more than two.
"I'll stay with you until Taleel arrives." Feired closed the door behind him, leaving two of the Imperial Guard in the hall.
"Where'd we lose Braden?" Skye took the bundle of clothes from Feired and laid them on the bed. He'd probably need to wear something different to dinner, but he could decide after he'd showered.
"On his comm. I think Prince Argos sent something for him to take care of." Feired crossed his arms. "You think Keeper is going to show?"
Skye paused. "Yeah. I could be wrong, but I think I have an idea of what he might be plotting this time. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes an appearance before morning." He turned and entered the bath-also set up for humans, thank goodness.
He had just lathered up when he felt a new presence. Skye smiled and waited, hopeful that Taleel would join him.
'Pfft. Ask or I will,' Mistral scolded.
I'm in the shower if you'd care to join me, Skye sent to his reticent general.
Your abilities have gotten stronger. I've barely stepped into the house.
Then you better hurry. Skye grinned and closed his eyes. It let him focus on his connection, and, on a whim, he reached out with his powers.
"Ugh! Skye!" Taleel shouted. Though, on a positive note, his wing-mate was much closer.
The door to the bath opened.
"What... Skye? Shit... that was you, wasn't it? Please tell me it was you." Taleel sounded worried.
"Did you like it?" Skye teased.
"Father Dragon." Seconds later a naked ebony-skinned hunk stepped into the shower with him. "That's not playing fair."
Skye stepped into Taleel and wrapped his arms around the muscular man before turning him into the spray. "Just a warm-up. I thought it might make you remember having me in your ass the other night."
"How?" Taleel let out a moan as Skye began lathering his body.
"The time in Underhill gave a boost to our magic and abilities. Not just mine, all the dragons or those with magic. We've also been practicing, though technically, that was my telekinesis, not magic."
"But I wasn't even close to you."
"Hm. Probably helps that I can feel and locate you through our bond. Probably wouldn't work with a stranger." Skye hadn't thought about it, but it would make sense. Perhaps he should experiment.
"You now in the habit of massaging stranger's intimate places with your powers?" Taleel gave him a skeptical look.
"You know me better than that. Then again, I suppose if I want to better understand my powers and test my limits... You know, all in the name of science and all."
Taleel burst out laughing. "If I didn't know you, I'd worry. You are teasing, right?"
"Did I inspire any ideas?" Skye asked.
"Oh, those ideas were already building. Seeing you in those skimpy shorts doing the kata... Damn, dragonling, you've put on a lot of muscle since that last time we danced."
"Maybe you were away too long." Skye squatted to finish washing Taleel's lower half. This might be stretching my self-control, he thought. 'Maybe we could take this to the bed, Mistral. Somehow, I doubt they have the palace's magic water heater.'
"I had no control over the time you spent in Underhill. You can't blame that on me."
Skye turned off the shower and grabbed a towel for Taleel. "Maybe next time you should make sure you're with us."
"I'm flattered you think I have that much control. Reality is that I go where I'm told."
"Fine, then." Skye smirked. "Get on the bed."
"Yes, sir." Taleel lay on his back, propping his head on the pillows and spread his legs invitingly. "Like this, sir?"
"Hm...it's a start." Skye couldn't help that his eyes were drawn to Taleel's cock which stood tall and hard with a glistening stream of pre- cum dripping from the head.
'We could suck him, then when he's relaxed, flip him over and eat that beautiful ass,' Mistral suggested.
'Good idea, Mistral.'
Skye crawled onto the bed between Taleel's legs and grinned at the black dragon staring back at him. "Relax. I've been practicing."
"Mm-hm. I'm just worried about what that vampire might have taught you." Taleel's words might have been skeptical, but Skye could feel the lust building.
"Mostly he teaches you how to survive having multiple orgasms in a row. Passing out optional." Skye gripped Taleel's shaft and squeezed. "Sorry, I can't give you the blood kiss, but I have learned a few other techniques you might enjoy."
Skye took the head of Taleel's cock into his mouth and sucked. He wasn't as big as Garrett overall, but the head of the black dragon's dick was larger than the shaft. The flesh was warm and velvety smooth, and he could taste his sweet pre-cum.
'We'll get more soon. Taleel deserves the full treatment. We have missed opportunities to make up for,' Mistral said. 'We should shield. I don't want to hear Storm whining about not getting to join.'
'Pretty sure Corbin and Feired can keep River occupied.'
Mistral snorted. 'He'll still whine. Do you really not know your brother and his dragon? The "We want ALL the dicks" brother?'
Skye laughed and almost choked with Taleel's cock lodged in his throat.
"You find my dick amusing?"
Skye reluctantly pulled back, swiping his tongue across the tip to catch a drop of pre. "Sorry, Mistral was reminding me to shield or expect to have River join. Since I don't want to share you at the moment, give me a second." Skye closed his eyes-for some reason it made concentrating on his powers easier-and shielded out the others except for Taleel and Garrett. He tried not to block his mate unless he had to. While he was focused, he thought about his telekinesis and what he might do for Taleel.
He took Taleel back into his mouth and sucked while running his hands up the powerful thighs, encouraging them to stay parted for him.
"Father Dragon, you have been practicing."
"Mm..." Skye sent a tendril into Taleel's ass, finding his prostate and beginning a gentle teasing massage.
"You don't play fair," Taleel moaned. "Not gonna last long if you keep that up."
Skye smiled around the dick but chose not to respond. Maybe Taleel had forgotten that Skye could bring him back over and over. None of his partners needed to be satisfied with one and done.
"UGH!" Taleel's body arched, and he made a strange keening sound when Skye pinched and pulled on the black dragon's nipples.
'Maybe I'm the forgetful one. How could I not remember how sensitive his tits are?'
'Make him squirm. If he can still remember his name, we're not doing this right. His nips and prostate need to remember us. Harder!'
Skye sucked harder as well, letting the smooth shaft slide across his tongue and into his throat. Taleel was so hard that Skye could trace the veins with his tongue. He pressed his nose into Taleel's groin, and swallowed around the large prick, letting his throat milk the dragon's shaft. Taleel's body was attempting to come off the bed, but Skye had enough strength to hold him in place.
'Dragon muscles for the win,' Mistral teased. 'Bet our general isn't used to having lovers who can hold him down and make him fall apart like this. He needs it. He needs to give up control and let us pleasure him.'
'He does.' Skye carefully monitored the dragon's thoughts and emotions, ready to pull back if there was any hesitation or displeasure. Mistral was right; Taleel was so programmed to be in control he struggled with letting go.
"Fuck, Skye! What..." The question ended in an odd keening sound and Skye felt the cock swell and stiffen further before he could feel the cum pulsing through the shaft.
Skye pulled back enough to be able to swallow and continued bobbing his head, using his lips and tongue to stroke and tease the orgasm from the dragon. He pulled even harder on Taleel's tits and knew that milk had begun squirting across the dark muscled chest. He couldn't tell from his telekinesis, but he was still in Taleel's head and knew that objective one had been achieved.
Taleel came apart with an almost blackout level orgasm. Skye felt a wave of approval from Garrett.
'Goals.' Mistral's voice held a hint of pride. 'We'll fuck him unconscious, trust me. We got this. Besides, it was too early to take a break.'
After swallowing and licking Taleel's cock clean, Skye gripped the narrow hips and pulled himself up, licking his way up the eight-pack abs to the full round pecs. He captured all the spilt milk and licked the swollen nibs before sucking one into his mouth. A few hard pulls and he got a little more, including a whimper from Taleel.
"Have I ever mentioned that I really, really, like your nipples?" Skye moved to the other and sucked until it was becoming too much for Taleel. He playfully swiped the tip with his tongue and waited for the dragon to open his eyes.
"Father Dragon..." Taleel moaned as his eyelids fluttered and slowly revealed his swirling silver eyes. His body had started to glow, a brilliant silvery-white making his eyes look even more like moonlight.
"There you are. I thought you might check out on me."
Taleel snorted. "Dragon scales, maybe you shouldn't practice any more. I'm not sure I could take it."
"Ah, that's sweet. It just means we need to build up your endurance. Ask the guys who went with me to Underhill, they'll tell you."
"Hmph. Strange that none mentioned it."
Skye shrugged and sat back on Taleel's thighs. "Take it up with them." Skye enjoyed the view for a moment. 'There is an extremely lucky man out there who is going to be thrilled to claim this ebony hunk as his own. Now, we just have to find him.'
'What if it's a "her"?'
'Even the fates aren't that cruel. Especially now that Taleel knows how much he likes dick in his dragon hole, thinking of... I think we've given him enough recovery time.'
'Definitely. We must prepare him for his someday-mate. I expect when he sees Taleel our black dragon won't escape the bed for weeks.' Mistral had a touch of glee in his mind voice.
Skye climbed off the ebony hunk then flipped Taleel onto his stomach without warning, straddling his hips so he was pinned.
"Skye?"
"I've missed this ass." Skye gripped and squeezed the round globes. Taleel was similarly muscled to Garrett but had a narrower waist and hips accentuating his glutes. He spread them enough to see Taleel's dragon hole, already quivering and glistening with slick.
Taleel made a small whimper-completely at odds with his physical presence. "How do you do this to me?"
"What? Flip you around? Or maybe..." Skye teased Taleel's opening with his finger, spreading the slick and gently pushing into the first knuckle, only to have the black dragon lift to try to get him in deeper. "Did you mean how hungry your hole is for my dick? Hm?"
"Insufferable brat," Taleel grumbled.
"Aw, come on. Is it my fault that I was the one to discover how much you like having a cock inside you?'
"I don't," Taleel growled as his ass continued to push back.
Skye pushed two more fingers into Taleel as he lay forward pressing Taleel's body into the bed. He was positioned so his mouth was against the dragon's ear. "It's okay. I've got you. There's no shame in liking a cock inside you. Pretty sure that's how dragons roll. And it's pointless to lie or protest. I'm in your head and I know very well how much you want this."
"How does Garrett put up with your sass?"
"Hm... A few orgasms and he will swear that he finds it cute and endearing."
Taleel laughed. "Why do I not doubt that?"
"Obviously, because it's true." Skye pushed his fingers in deeper.
"Just do it already," Taleel said into the pillow.
"Yeah? I mean if you insist." Skye repositioned and pressed his cock into the channel between Taleel's cheeks and spread the leaking slick. He pressed the head to the dragon's opening and gently pushed forward, only to have Taleel thrust back, forcing him the rest of the way in.
"Greedy dragon," Skye teased now that he was fully seated inside Taleel. He wiggled his hips and was delighted with the sounds it got from him. Skye lay forward pressing his chest to Taleel's back and began slow, deep thrusts.
"Father Dragon, yes..."
Skye pushed Taleel's hair aside and nuzzled into his neck as he found a steady rhythm. "I don't know why you fight it. We both know you and your dragon crave this."
"Shut up and fuck me," Taleel rasped.
"I could help to make sure you have a hot wing-mate in your bed every night. If you wanted, I could even make sure there's someone always willing to satisfy your needs, day or night." Skye had said his piece and decided to let it drop. He could feel the conflicted emotions and didn't want to ruin the moment or the possibility of planting a seed that would bud later.
'There must be a reason he holds back,' Mistral observed. 'It is not near the surface of his thoughts...perhaps we should ask Kwill or Beck to investigate. Maybe there is something that can be fixed.'
'Agreed. Can you ask his dragon? You see the same thing, right? It's not my imagination that he wants and needs this-and it is not because of us.'
'He fights his nature. But Jett won't say why. Don't worry, we'll figure it out and make it right. For now, let's use our magic and abilities to take him apart again. If we and Garrett are the only ones he will permit, then we will do our best.'
Taleel let out a low moan and his body tensed before his channel tightened and throbbed around Skye, almost pulling Skye over the edge. It took him a moment to regain control so he could continue thrusting. If he hadn't miscounted, that was Taleel's second anal orgasm.
'He won't last much longer,' Mistral warned.
Skye took Mistral's hint and focused on Taleel's nipples as he had when he'd sucked him but this time rather than adding pressure to his prostate, he stimulated Taleel's cock. He could feel the building orgasm and knew he only had seconds to prepare his magic. Pulling and spooling his power came easily and he was ready.
"Father Dragon!" Taleel cried out as he came. His muscles spasming and his dragon hole clenching tightly around Skye's cock.
The magic flowed out of Skye and into Taleel, filling every corner as his release pumped into the black dragon's tight ass.
"That's it, let go, Taleel." Skye licked along the dark pointed ear and felt the man and his dragon shudder beneath him with a second orgasm. The silvery glow illuminating Taleel's body grew brighter, and he was pretty sure his wing-mate had passed out.
'Ooooh...that was a good one.' Mistral sounded rather smug at the pleasure they'd wrung out of Taleel.
'It was.' Skye carefully withdrew and laid gentle kisses down Taleel's spine before licking at his slick hole. Most of Skye's cum had already been absorbed by the dragon but such a beautiful ass needed to be loved. He carefully rolled the man out of his spend and got a wet cloth from the bath to clean him. Crusted jizz was never pleasant. He wiped up what he could and pulled a cover over Taleel, before deciding on a shower.
- Scene 3 *
Skye was glad the rain had held off long enough for them to get to the clinic, though from the ominous looking dark clouds and impressive show of lightning, it wouldn't be long.
"Are you looking for something specific?" Braden asked as they walked down the hall of the clinic.
"Ya could have waited!" River shouted from behind him. He walked briskly toward them followed by the two remaining Imperial Guard.
"Shhh... Indoor voice." Skye rolled his eyes as he, Braden, and two of the guards paused to wait for his brother to catch up.
"Sorry." River had the decency to look embarrassed as he glanced around- likely realizing there could be other people recovering in the clinic. "You going to check on her again?"
"Yeah. I might not have been thinking clearly the first time." Skye repressed a shudder at remembering Caladwen's grossly distorted body. He turned to Braden. "I don't know what I'm looking for...maybe hoping that I missed something."
"Since River is here, do you want me to wait outside?" Braden asked.
After thinking for a moment, Skye shook his head. "No, I want you to join us." He stopped at the door to the prep room where they could wash up and don gloves and masks before he shot River a look. "What happened to Corbin and Feired?"
"Taking showers before dinner. I got them messy." River's face lit with a huge shit eating grin. "And Taleel?"
"Napping."
"Uh-huh. Napping... I'm rather hurt you didn't include me." River mock pouted.
"You'll live. Ready for this? You should open your magic sight. You, too, Braden. It will be good practice and I know Master Quanta taught you how." Once they were ready, Skye led them to Caladwen's room.
"Snitch," Braden grumbled as he followed Skye and River into the room, leaving the-now four-guards in the hall.
"Medic lady isn't going to get upset that we came in without her?" River appeared to look everywhere but at Caladwen.
"Hmm..." Skye heard his brother but was caught in the shifting auras that shone around the former queen and her unborn foal. He'd noticed how fractured Caladwen's appeared on the first visit but hadn't noticed the interaction between hers and the baby's. As he looked more closely, he noticed that the edges where the two touched, Caladwen's aura was "healing." It wasn't dramatic, but he was pretty sure-
"River, Braden. Do me a favor and tell me what you see where their aura's touch."
"You mean the glow-y rainbow thing?" Braden made a pained sound. "Father Dragon, how is she still alive?" Braden's confusion and horror were coming through their bond.
"Magic." Skye wasn't certain but it was Tiessa's answer and the only explanation he could come up with. 'Remind me to talk to Quanta. I think Braden needs a few more lessons on auras and reading magic.' Skye heard mistral's humph of agreement.
"Huh..." River moved closer and squatted near the bed, still outside the magical stasis field. "No question that Caladwen's is fucked up, but now that you pointed it out. It's like the edges that touch the foal's are repairing themselves. The color is better and it doesn't have any of the black veins and streaks."
"Oh! I can see that. And the baby's is much prettier and looks more right."
"That's an understatement," River snorted.
"You're right. Caladwen's magic and aura are badly damaged. The elders blocking her powers shouldn't have done this. But I have no idea why or how it happened. Maybe some of the damage was already there?"
"You think that's why she went psycho?" River moved to a different spot so he was closer to the foal.
"I'm only guessing. The other fae might have seen something at the time. I didn't even know to look." Skye knelt beside River. "Did something catch your eye?"
River's hand hovered close to the shield. "I swear I can sense her. It's not strong... But her magic has a melody-like she's singing to me."
"I hear it too. And I don't have anything to base it on, but my spidey senses tell me she's going to be a mage. Mistral agrees and thinks that's why her aura is so bright and why she sings to us."
"You can tell that from someone's aura?" Braden looked at Skye skeptically then turned his attention back to the pregnant elf. "Looks like swirly colors to me."
"You need more practice, that's all. I'll drop my shields so you can see mine. It's not just what you see, there's a hum I can feel and if you listen closely there's a soft melody. Compare what you see around me to Caladwen and the baby." Skye lowered his shields. There were many layers that he built around himself out of habit. Some protected him from magic, others from intruding minds or thoughts, and yet others kept those with magic from being able to detect him.
"Whoa..." Braden's eyes went wide. Then he looked at River before glancing between Skye and Caladwen. "You both have rainbows of color but yours is much brighter, and you've got a lot of orange and indigo. She has mostly green and yellow. But there's something else, not quite a color..."
"That would be the magic. If you filter out the aura, you'll sense it more clearly. It doesn't always have sound or a vibration, sometimes it's more like a shimmer or sparkling cloud," Skye explained.
Braden scowled again. "Filter. Right. I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Skye, Quanta just started teaching me how to do that, it may be that Braden hasn't gotten that far." River had moved again, this time closer to Caladwen's head.
"Sorry, Braden. I keep forgetting. You'll get there."
"And all of that means?" Braden had moved closer to be beside Skye.
Skye let out a nervous laugh. "No clue. But if I had to guess, I'd say the foal's magic is trying to protect it by keeping Caladwen's sickness away."
"Skye, wouldn't that work better in Underhill? Magic is stronger there for us, so wouldn't it potentially help the baby as well?" River asked.
"Yes. I don't think there's any choice but to move her to Underhill. I think we're just waiting for Keeper." Skye sighed. "Or some series of unknown events or tasks that have to take place first."
"Even if you are able to move them, what happens with Caladwen? No way that foal is coming out of her body and leaving anything intact," Braden said.
"Hmph. Sorta like in 'Alien' if it was mostly grown when it popped out." River grimaced.
"Yeah." Skye felt queasy.
'We shouldn't put it off any longer,' Mistral reminded Skye.
"River, I'm going to try to read Caladwen. Can you have my back?"
"What do you need me to do?" River asked.
"Keep your connection to me and pull me out if I get lost or stuck? I'm not sure what I'll find or be able to see. She's not technically sleeping but she's not conscious either. I'm worried about what Tiessa said-that Caladwen isn't mentally stable enough to care for the child."
"I thought that was a given." River didn't look pleased.
"She was the queen of the summer court. Even banished and denounced there will be those looking for reasons to object. It also means the baby is part of the royal family, even with the questionable conception and Caladwen's actions. I think you should treat every action and decision related to her as being subject to intense scrutiny." Braden blushed when he finished.
"Dude. You have been spending too much time with Pater." River shook his head with a grin.
"And he's right. That's why I want to check, and we aren't going to 'do' anything or make decisions without someone smarter than me." Skye took a deep breath and mentally prepared himself for the dive.
River stood and moved behind Skye, placing his hands on Skye's shoulders. "I got you, bro."
"Is there anything I should do?" Braden asked.
"No, but you can start thinking of how we fix this," River said.
Skye focused and slid past the rudimentary mental barriers that protected Caladwen's mind. He couldn't tell if they were defenses that she'd set up or if someone else had placed them. He did his best to ignore her aura. The colors were sickly and dull with disturbing black veins and splotches.
'This is a dark and scary place,' Mistral commented as they tried to sort through her thoughts and memories. 'It is most similar to a dream state but not a reality I would wish to live in.'
'Agreed. I'm not sure she would have chosen it when she was well. You don't think...we didn't do this to her, did we?' Skye was horrified that his intervention in the grove could have caused this.
'It is a dream, Skye. Maybe a nightmare. Not reality and while we made a suggestion, this level of kink, with centaurs, doing what they're doing...was nowhere in our thoughts. Ignore it, that's my plan.' Mistral pulled back.
Skye confirmed that Caladwen's mind was damaged. It seemed as if many of her memories had been blocked or erased. The missing pieces created disconnects and fragmented other parts of her stored knowledge and memories. 'This doesn't make sense, Mistral. This isn't from removing or blocking her magic.' Skye withdrew and took a deep breath.
"Fuck bro. You think a psion did that?" River asked.
"Did what?" Braden asked.
"I don't know. I'd think if a psion had done it, it wouldn't have been such a mess. They know the dangers of wiping memories. That was...a-"
"I believe you're thinking 'butcher job.' I don't think she's going to recover from that. I mean maybe if Kwill worked on her. But even then..." River said.
"You going to explain?" Braden asked.
"It looks as if someone or something wiped out years of Caladwen's memories and were very sloppy about it." Skye grimaced knowing that it was unlikely to have been accidental and added yet one more mystery.
- Scene 4 *
The storm raged outside, the thunder loud enough they often had to pause in conversation to be heard. Fortunately the dinner was in a building connected to where they were staying so they didn't have to venture out. They hadn't been so lucky when returning from the clinic and had been totally drenched, requiring a change of clothes.
A whispered conversation between one of the guards and Corbin caught Skye's attention.
Everything okay?
Give me a moment, I'll explain, Corbin responded.
"I hope everything has been to your liking," Edwin, chief of the centaurs, said.
"It's all been excellent, thank you." Other than taking their meal at a standing table, the food was fairly standard. He hadn't been sure if centaurs would be vegetarian but that was quickly answered when there were several types of roasted meat set out. If anything, the food was more like what they'd had in Underhill than what they served at the palace.
Skye, Emperor Darius sent word that they will not be joining us tonight. The storms are too severe for them to travel so we should expect them in the morning, Corbin sent.
I'm not surprised. Skye felt a chill as he remembered the storm that had been used to conceal his transport being shot down that began the ordeal with the slavers.
"You were saying that you agree that Caladwen may not be capable of caring for the child?" Tiessa looked concerned, more than surprised.
"I'm not a mind healer and would like someone else to confirm, but yes. There is more damage than there should be. I don't have any explanations." Skye shrugged. He did have suspicions that there had been foul play, but he couldn't prove anything, and it didn't change what they needed to do.
"We seem to be at an impasse." Edwin stared at his dessert as if it had betrayed him.
"Is there anything that you can do until the fae allow her to be taken into Underhilll? And can she be moved while she's in stasis?" Jacovy asked.
"Perhaps, with care." Tiessa seemed to be thinking. "I'd have to stay with her...and I'm not sure if my magic is strong enough to hold, especially when we cross the veil."
Skye felt a familiar tingle and a sudden awareness that told him a portal had opened nearby. "I think we may have answers soon. A portal just opened."
Corbin and Feired immediately stepped to Skye's side, blocking him and River from the entrance to the room. The guards also moved closer, forming a second barrier.
'It's Keeper,' Mistral confirmed in Skye's mind.
He'd recognized the feel of the fae, but it was nice having it validated. "I believe Keeper has arrived."
A few moments later Keeper stepped into the room. The elf was as striking as ever; however, he'd forgone his elegant robes, or kurta with silk pants and was wearing a tailored military-style jacket and slacks that would have fit in at any formal Draga function. His beard was trimmed short and his long silver-white hair was pulled back accentuating his elvish features. Keeper gave a slight bow. "Good evening."
"Keeper, we are honored by your presence. May we offer you anything? I'm sure that the chef can prepare something for you," Edwin said.
"Thank you, Chief Roan, but that will not be necessary." Keeper turned his brilliant blue eyes to Skye. "Prince Skye."
"Keeper. It's good to see you again." Skye wondered for a moment about how to phrase his question then remembered that the centaurs had already approached Keeper. "I think we're all hoping you have answers for us and can tell us what we need to do to move Caladwen to Underhill. Is there somewhere that she can stay?"
"Of course. We've arranged for a home near your grandmother's farmstead. It can accommodate Caladwen as well as her centaur caregivers." There was a twinkle in Keeper's eye and a knowing smile on his face that made Skye wonder.
"Wait. Am I still expected to care for her?" Tiessa asked. It appeared from her expression that it might have been a surprise. "I have a job! Responsibilities here in the village. A mate."
Keeper turned his gaze to Skye, apparently unmoved by Tiessa's reaction. An immaculate silver eyebrow arched, and while nothing was said...
"What?" Skye was well aware he sounded defensive.
"I expected you'd have it all worked out by now." Keeper's tone sounded disappointed as if Skye had failed.
"Easy for you to say when you have the answers," River said. "Perhaps if you told Skye and the rest of us what is needed, we could make it happen."
Skye bit his tongue because his intended response of "Yeah! What he said," was perhaps not helpful.
"River, you should understand by now I can't do that. Perhaps you can outline what the problem is and what you think needs to happen. While I can't give you the answer, I might be able to nudge you in the right direction."
What do you think, River? Our guesses could be wrong, and I hate to cause more pain and disappointment.
I think it is worth the leap. It is a good solution, even if it isn't the one Underhill wants. Storm said that he and Mistral already agreed.
"Okay. If everyone could please be patient and hear me out." Skye looked at those gathered around the table, and while there was skepticism on their faces, the centaurs appeared to be willing to listen.
"I think everyone agrees the former queen is mentally not well. The how, why, and what to do about that is a separate discussion. However, River and I agree after doing a mind probe-"
"You what?" Tiessa's eyes went wide.
"It's part of Skye's telepathic gift. He's certified by the Assembly as a Truth seeker." River was quick to jump to Skye's defense.
"Please continue." Keeper waved his hand as if to silence Tiessa.
Skye looked at Tiessa and hoped his expression conveyed apology. "Her memories have been badly damaged, many of the pathways are gone or broken. I don't know how she'll be able to survive long-term without extensive mind healing. I don't see how she could care for a child, and I doubt she'll be able to function independently."
"Was this from blocking her magic?" Edwin asked.
He hesitated, but he, Mistral, River, and Storm had discussed it when he'd been in her head and determined that Underhill's manipulations weren't to blame, and if anything, the magic block was helping her. "No. I know there were some who thought she'd been losing it for a while but this is different. Her core is fractured and if she still had an open channel to magic, it would likely overwhelm her as I don't think she retains the knowledge of how to handle it. As it is, her inherent fae magic is holding her together but I don't know how long it can last. It's hard on the foal as well since her aura wants to connect with her mother and can't. She's alone."
Tiessa let out a pained gasp and turned to Jacovy for him to pull her into his arms.
Skye took a deep breath and felt an encouraging nudge from River before he spoke. "I think the foal should be placed permanently in Tiessa and Jacovy's care to raise as their own. I don't know what's involved with the fae court since the child is part of the royal line. I'd like it to be officially documented so no one can cause problems for them later. I think the fae should assist with an allowance and other support since it will require Tiessa and Jacovy to give up their jobs and move to Underhill until the foal is born. Jacovy you asked if there was anything you could do, I'm asking for this."
Skye paused and tensed himself, waiting for the pushback.
"We also wondered if there was a way-especially once we're in Underhill- for Tiessa and Jacovy to connect with the baby since she's not getting what she needs from Caladwen." River glared at Keeper as if daring him to disagree.
"I'm not sure-" Edwin began but stopped when Keeper held up his hand.
"What else?" Keeper smiled.
River gave a mental snort. I can almost hear him saying "good boy."
"I don't know what will be required to move Caladwen or what care she'll need to ensure the baby is delivered successfully. I'd like the priority to be for the health of the baby, not Caladwen. I don't mean to sound cold or cruel but there's not enough of her left to save." Skye glanced around and not having been shouted down or struck by lightning, he continued. "And can we do it soon?"
"Of course. Though I believe we still need everyone's agreement. Tiessa and Jacovy, do you agree to being the filly's parents? It's a lifetime commitment and will have challenges." Keeper turned to look at Skye. "You think she'll be a mage?"
"We're pretty sure." Skye glanced at River who nodded.
"Obviously, we'd make sure you have support, both for dealing with the fae court as well as a young budding mage," Keeper continued.
Tiessa and Jacovy had their heads together in a whispered conversation. Skye did his best not to listen and he wondered if the centaurs were used to being around other shifters. If so, they'd know that whispering was pointless. They hugged before Tiessa turned to look at Keeper with tears in her eyes.
"Yes, we agree." Tiessa's voice broke.
Braden, is there any reason why I can't commit to taking care of their expenses?
No, Skye. You have more than enough funds, and Prince Argos already instructed me to offer Emperor Darius's support if it came up.
Keeper nodded. "Good. Chief Roan, will you handle providing leave to Tiessa and Jacovy so they can join their new daughter in Underhill? Handle any issues-"
"Keeper," Skye interrupted. "I will cover any expenses incurred for Tiessa and Jacovy. Chief Roan, if you could orchestrate and send any needs to my office, we will handle it."
"Thank you, Skye. Chief Roan you'll need to deal with any inquiries and communicate with neighbors and friends," Keeper continued.
"I will gladly do so. Does this need to be kept a secret?" Edwin asked.
Keeper was quiet for a moment. "It is fine for others to know that Tiessa will be continuing her care for Caladwen and that she has been taken to Underhill. No one should wonder why she'd take her mate with her on a long assignment. Let's say nothing of the child."
Edwin bowed his head. "As you wish. How soon do you think you'll be able to move her? We don't have a suitable transport to move her to the elf palace."
"If Skye and his team are amenable, we'll move her tonight. Do you have any objections, Skye?"
"Um...no?" Skye was caught off guard not thinking it was a possibility.
"Tiessa, Jacovy, you may wish to pack for an extended stay. Skye, maybe a couple of your big brawny dragons could help them?"
Taleel can stay with you and River. Feired and Braden can help me assist the centaurs, Corbin sent.
You don't mind? Skye asked.
The sooner we get them moved and settled, the sooner we can move on, Feired added.
I'll get the information I need to make sure we can cover for them while they're in Underhill, Braden said.
Maybe check if they have family here that you can work with. We have no idea of their living situation or if they're supporting anyone else. Once they're in Underhill, communication is unpredictable. Though now that the portals are being kept open it should be better. Skye tried to think of what else they might be missing.
"How are we going to get everything to Underhill? The portal at the elf palace is hardly private," River said in a low voice.
"Not to worry. I'll open a portal here. It is one of the perks of the job, and with the storm raging and it being late, it is unlikely the elves will even notice." Keeper winked.
'Duh... Why didn't that occur to me? I felt him open a portal to get here.'
'We have more experience with portals disappearing than opening.' Mistral sounded amused.
It was an abrupt end to their dinner as Jacovy and Tiessa returned to their home to pack with the help of Skye's wing-mates. Chief Edwin Roan excused himself, and Keeper asked to be taken to Caladwen.
Skye expected to be completely drenched on their return to the clinic. The storm was one of the worst he'd seen since being on Draga. Much more akin to what he'd seen of hurricanes back on Earth. The thunder was so loud he could feel it in his bones and the lightning was blinding.
"Can someone take the lead? I'm not familiar with the town or where the clinic is located." Keeper looked at them expectantly.
"Um... It's raining..." River looked a bit nervous. Even inside, the storm sounded loud.
Keeper chuckled. "I doubt you'll melt, but don't fret, River, I can handle a little downpour."
River and Skye shared a look. We're going to die, aren't we?
I doubt it very much. He needs us. Besides, we have no idea what his abilities are. I'm sure he's got to be as strong as Master Mage Quanta if he's the voice of Underhill.
River grunted.
The Imperial Guards put Keeper in the center of their group with Skye and River. When they stepped outside, Keeper glowed for a moment and a translucent bubble formed around the group, holding back the rain as well as the wind and worst of the sound.
"Huh. Cool." River looked as if he was going to poke at the soap-like bubble and Skye really hoped he didn't. You should learn this one. Could come in handy.
Somehow I doubt it's a beginner spell. Skye was impressed as the bubble moved with them, keeping everyone protected until they entered the clinic.
"Which room?" Keeper asked.
Skye pointed. "We're supposed to wash and put on protect..."
"That worked well." River laughed as they watched Keeper walk into Caladwen's room.
"Skye, please join me," Keeper called.
"But..." Skye gave a pleading look to River.
"Don't sweat it bro. If Keeper doesn't think it's a problem, he knows more than we do. Who knows, maybe he did a magic sanitizing spell." River smirked. "It's temporary anyway. I doubt they have protective gloves, masks, and booties in Underhill."
Skye hugged River. "Thanks."
"Yeah, yeah. I know you guys just can't keep your hands off all this magnificence. HEY!" River screeched when Taleel squeezed his ass.
"You're right. Very hard to resist." Taleel delivered it in a serious deadpan voice that made Skye smile.
"Are you coming, Skye?" Keeper peered out of the doorway with a scowl.
"Sorry." Skye and his wing-mates followed Keeper back into the room. Nothing had changed since their last visit.
"Such a tragedy and a waste. She wasn't always crazy. Don't misunderstand, she was never a good queen, but there are degrees of incompetence." Keeper reached out as if testing the stasis field before sitting on the bedside. His hand hovered over Caladwen's distended belly.
They watched in silence. Skye assumed they were all wondering if Keeper could sense anything they had not. His curiosity piqued even more when Keeper gave a soft smile.
"Oh, she will be a joy. And such strong magic. You were right Skye. Giving her a connection to Jacovy and Tiessa must be a priority. I can't imagine how lonely and scary it must be having only Caladwen's mind to touch." Keeper stood abruptly and turned to Skye.
"Could you pick up anything we missed?" River asked.
"Doubtful, but it's something we can discuss once they are settled."
"Was there a reason you couldn't move her to Underhill before? I don't see why we needed to be here," Skye asked.
"Skye." Keeper crossed his arms and waited.
"Because I needed to see for myself? That I had to be the one to say the child would be with Tiessa and Jacovy."
"I knew you'd figure it out. You have the power of Emperor Darius behind you in addition to well-established connections to Underhill and the fae. Can you imagine if her disposition was left to the fae court?"
"Well that would have been a fuck show of epic proportions," River muttered.
"Exactly. All thinking of the young child as a pawn for politics and power and not giving a thought to what was good for her. She may have elf blood in her veins, but that child is a centaur and needs to be raised by those who will not only understand her but love, cherish, and accept her for who she is."
"You're right. I get it now." Skye saw River nod in agreement. "You think she's in imminent danger?"
"Not at all. I've been monitoring Caladwen. Her appearance may be disturbing, but she'll deliver the young filly just fine. The stasis spell won't be necessary in Underhill, and we can take it down to move her." Keeper moved to the other side of the bed and waved his arm in front of the wall. It began to glow softly then faded until they were looking into another room.
Keeper turned back to the bed and with another wave the stasis spell vanished. "You may want to let your wing-mates know how to join us. They can bring Tiessa and Jacovy through here."
"How do we move her?" River asked.
"I've called for assistance." As Keeper responded, four ogres entered the room across the veil carrying a stretcher. "And there they are. Good gentlemen, please." Keeper gestured to Caladwen.
The ogres stepped through, carefully positioning the large stretcher next to the bed. Rather than lifting Caladwen, the ogres each took a corner and lifted the mattress onto the poles. They lifted in unison and carried her still prone form through the portal. They repeated the process, lifting the mattress onto a similar bed in the room in Underhill.
Without another word the ogres took the stretcher and left.
"And that's done. See, that was the easy part after you took care of the difficult political pieces." Keeper stepped through to the other room beckoning the others to follow.
"One second." Skye closed his eyes and concentrated, sending out a warning to his wing-mates. I am going to cross the veil into Underhill. Nothing wrong, we're moving Caladwen. Didn't want you to worry when I disappeared.
Love you, be careful, Garrett sent.
Love you. Hopefully this will be a short trip. Wish you were with me. Skye narrowed his focus to those who'd come with him to the centaur village. When you're ready, Keeper has opened a portal in Caladwen's room. You can join us through there. He waited until he felt the acknowledgment and stepped through the portal.
"Skye?" River's tone immediately told Skye something was amiss. He followed his brother and understood immediately. "What the fuck?"
While he agreed with his brother, Skye was already pulling on his magic and opening his other sight. He held his hand over Caladwen's belly and let out a sigh of relief. "How?"
"Magic. Lots of it in Underhill. Not to worry, she's still a centaur filly and hasn't been harmed in any way. Think of it like a pocket dimension within Caladwen's womb. This is how cross-species births have been handled for eons. All is as it should be," Keeper explained.
Skye was still stunned but had no real choice but to accept Keeper's word. Caladwen now looked like a "normal" pregnant elf. If Skye hadn't already confirmed with his magic, he might have thought she'd lost the foal.
"Do we need to do anything for her?" River walked around the bed, holding his hand over Caladwen. Skye could tell his brother was using his other sight and magic to confirm what his eyes were telling him.
"Not until the others arrive. I've asked one of the more experienced midwives to assist Tiessa. She knows elves, Underhill, and mixed species births. Combined with Tiessa's knowledge of centaurs, they'll be able to handle whatever is needed. The centaurs will have plenty of support and I think they'll find the time here good for rebuilding their relationship as well as establishing one with their new daughter."
"The elders didn't think Caladwen would be able to survive here after her magic was blocked. Has something changed, or are there other precautions we need to take?" Skye asked.
Keeper scanned the room, clearly noting Taleel and Skye's guards before he spoke. "You saw the damage? This was not her condition when you confronted her, nor was she like this when she was banished."
"I did. I assumed you didn't want to mention it in front of the others. I promise, you can trust these men. I don't know who or how, but someone ripped the memories from her with no consideration to the damage they were doing."
"Yes. I can feel the taint of their touch. Underhill did not do this to her though it was done with magic, not telepathy. Underhill's manipulations would not have caused permanent harm. I would venture to say she knew things someone did not want us to learn. She's so far gone that any discomfort she felt at being surrounded by magic she couldn't access is irrelevant. I think you realize that this amount of damage can't be fixed."
"I'm no expert and certainly not a mind healer, but yeah, that was my thought." Skye wasn't going to argue about what damage Underhill messing with the queen would have done. It wouldn't help them now.
"We can make her more comfortable and certainly get her through the pregnancy but I'm not sure we'd be doing her any favors to pull her out of her dream world." Keeper looked sad at the prospect.
"If there's anything I can do..."
"Stop." Keeper raised his hand. "You are not responsible for this, Skye. If someone hadn't attacked her mind, she could have had a long and productive life after birthing the foal. Even being banished. No, this was someone else's doing. My bigger worry is not knowing what they were trying to purge or what plots they were trying to cover."
"Sounds familiar," River muttered.
Keeper laughed. "Yes, it would. That's what happens when you're at the center of the storm bringing about change." Keeper's gaze moved over Skye's shoulders, and he turned to see that the others had arrived.
Skye heard Tiessa's gasp, even through the veil. If her expression was any indication, they had some explaining to do.
Scene 5 *
"You're going to wear a rut in the floor, dear." Grandma B. sat on the couch stroking River's hair. He'd fallen asleep with his head in her lap. If he weren't jealous, he'd probably give him grief for it. It was late, and they'd been there for hours.
"Do you think I can trust him?" Skye could acknowledge he might not be in the best frame of mind.
Grandma B. gave him the look. This was the "I love you, but sometimes you're daft" look. "Yes, dear. He and the elves have done right by me. And think about that poor little filly. How horrible it must be to have that thing for a mother and be trapped with her day in, day out. You need to do this for her."
"Grrr." Skye ran his hand through his hair. It was such a relief to have his grandmother show up at the door shortly after they'd brought Caladwen across. He remembered that Keeper said the house they'd chosen was near, though he hadn't remembered him saying Grandma B. would be their next- door neighbor.
'Skye, you're overreacting. You know we have to do this. Maybe you're reacting to being cut off from the wing?' Mistral was sounding so disgustingly reasonable Skye wanted to scream.
Strong arms wrapped around him from behind, holding him tightly as warm lips brushed against his ear. "Breathe, Skye." Taleel's voice sent a shiver down Skye's spine.
Skye took a ragged breath, then two, reveling in the feel of Taleel's tight hold on him.
"Sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me."
"Nothing to apologize for. We'll do what we need to do. It's been a lot to deal with, and the magic here alone is enough to set a dragon on edge."
"You get used to it." Corbin walked in with a cookie in each hand and dropped onto the couch beside Grandma B. and leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek.
"Skye, you have to promise to bring the rest of your wing to visit sometime. They're all so...so..."
"Sexy. I think that's the word you're looking for," Corbin mock whispered.
"Hush, you. Like you have any room to talk." Grandma B. blushed. But she also had a huge smile on her face.
"See that's why Skye's introducing us a few at a time. Though dark and scowl-y Taleel counts for two. But Braden's sweet, and Feired's baking up a storm," Corbin said.
"I told him I could have brought cookies." Grandma B. looked toward the kitchen doorway.
"He doesn't mind, Grandma. Baking helps him relax, and we're all a bit stressed. I'm sure if you get him cornered, you can swap recipes. He and Grandma Nancy are quite the baking duo." Skye turned in Taleel's arms and gave him a quick kiss. Thank you.
Taleel was glowing brightly as if he'd just had the best sex ever, and his eyes were almost blinding. They'd all been through it, but for the new guys it was disconcerting. For this visit, Corbin had more of a pale luster with a golden glow to his eyes. He still wasn't sure why it faded over time, but he had firsthand proof that it did.
"Ma'am, do I understand correctly that you'll be assisting to watch over the former queen," Taleel asked.
"No, dear. I'm here for the little one and her parents. The old queen can rot, once she's done and delivered that precious bundle. Tiessa and her man aren't familiar with Underhill, and it can take some getting used to."
"Do you think they'll remain here once she's born?" Skye asked.
"We'll have to wait and see, dear. It will likely depend on what's best for the little one."
"Skye, I think they're ready for you." Braden stepped into the room, and it was like someone had turned the lights on. Where Taleel had a silvery glow, Braden was as golden as the sun, and his blue eyes sparkled like gems. "Oh, come on. I can't help it." Braden's face reddened.
"But you're so pretty when you glow," Corbin teased.
Braden was about halfway into flipping off Corbin when he caught himself and mouthed an apology to Grandma B.
"Okay, here goes." Skye reluctantly pulled away from Taleel's embrace.
"You'll do great." Taleel squeezed his shoulder.
"Grandma, I'll call when I'm ready for you." Skye walked down the hall to where they had Caladwen and knocked at the door frame. This house, like the ones in the centaur village, was designed with them in mind.
"They're ready, Skye." Keeper stood and came to stand by him. "My spell is set and ready for you to do your part. Do you need me to repeat the incantation or steps for you?"
"No, I remember. So, this replicates what they'd have had if she had been their genetic child?"
Keeper paused as if thinking. "No. This will be much stronger. It is more like a lesser soul bond between mates. And it will supplant her native connection or attempts to draw from Caladwen. You and your magic bridge the gap and create an anchor for the spell that links the filly, Tiessa, and Jacovy. Your grandmother will serve as your proxy and an additional anchor, so the spell is not weakened when you're not in Underhill. The child will always feel a connection to your grandmother as if she were her own."
"And to me?"
"Yes, and to you. Think of yourself like a doting uncle. She and her magic will be drawn to you since it was present at her conception and holds the spell. It will feel 'familiar' like home. But she needs your grandmother since you'll be on the other side of the veil."
'Skye, we owe her this.' Mistral had been adamant since Keeper first suggested how to fix the broken parental bonds and the taint the foal might pick up from Caladwen.
He approached the centaur couple and waited for them to acknowledge him. They were staring at Caladwen's belly, likely still in disbelief. Jacovy turned his head and nodded.
"I promise, she's still there and healthy as ever," Skye reassured them.
"We saw. Keeper showed us." There was awe in Jacovy's tone.
"You understand what we're going to do?" Skye thought Keeper had explained it, but with how worked up everyone was, it didn't hurt to ask.
"You'll connect us as if I were the one carrying her." Tiessa still had tears in her eyes, but Skye could feel hope and joy as much as a tinge of sadness.
"Even stronger since we're mimicking a mate bond, and it will include Jacovy."
"Will it hurt?" Tiessa asked.
"Not at all. You might feel some tingling sensations, and you'll pick up on emotions or strong thoughts once it's in place. Your little girl loves to sing, so don't be surprised if you're able to hear her."
"She can speak?" Jacovy's eyes went wide.
"No, sorry, maybe I should say she can hum? It's a melody but doesn't have words, and I think part of it comes from her magic. If you're both ready, we'll start." Skye closed his eyes and began gathering his magic. It was ridiculously easy in Underhill, and he had to be careful not to pull too much. He'd yet to determine if it was just the nature of Underhill or if he had an added bonus due to his connection with the heart stone.
He opened his eyes.
"Keeper, can you ask Grandma to join us?" Skye used his other sight to see the foal's aura. Keeper had been right; he could see it stretching toward him even before he began. Skye pictured pulling a strand from the baby and connecting it to himself. He whispered the words Keeper had taught him. Once anchored he repeated the process to connect her to Tiessa then Jacovy. Once those were in place, he looked for Grandma B.'s and did the same. The next step was familiar. He began using his magic to strengthen the bonds, building layer upon layer to the strands, whispering the second part of the incantation.
He was momentarily distracted when he felt the foal's emotions come through along with her melody. It was stronger and happier than when he heard it last. She seemed to recognize his mental touch and was singing to him. Skye concentrated, trying to fight back the emotion, and returned to building the strands. When he was satisfied, he added connectors to make the bond more like a web, reinforcing the mate connection between Jacovy and Tiessa and then tying in Grandma B.
Skye pulled back to examine the bonds. They were solid and glowed with the emotions now passing through them. The centaurs already loved their little girl and it showed. She knew it as well and Skye fought more tears as he felt her joy at no longer being alone and finding her parents.
"It's a beautiful thing. Thank you." Keeper's voice was quiet as he spoke next to Skye.
"She already has so much love to give. I feel terrible it took me this long."
"It happened in the time it was needed. They were not ready before now, nor were you. This is right, and if you think her song is loud and her bond affects you, wait until you're carrying your own dragonling."
Keeper's words jarred Skye back into reality. 'I am so not ready for that!'
Mistral had the nerve to snicker. 'I don't think that was his intent. I believe he was pointing out how wonderous it will be when we hear the song and love of our own little one-when that eventuality happens.'
'Okay, I can live with that. Look at Grandma. She's beaming.'
'Another child to dote on. I think she considers this a gift, not a burden,' Mistral said.
Skye turned to Keeper. "Do we return to the centaur village now? Is there anything else we need to do here?"
"I can open a portal to your rooms. I think you all could use some sleep, though you might have to carry your brother."
- Scene 6 *
"I'm sure everything's fine." Taleel didn't look nearly as confident as he sounded.
River snorted. "Look at his face. That is not a good news face."
Corbin had stepped off to take a call from the Emperor's team, and they watched as he gestured and paced.
"You mean you're not listening in?" Skye turned to look at his brother. His lack of telepathic control had become a theme.
"Huh-uh. I'm trying to be good. You do it." River grinned.
"I'm sure he'll tell us when he's done." Skye was somewhat worried. It was already late morning, and the Emperor's shuttle hadn't arrived. The worst of the storm had passed, or at least the thunder and lightning had, and what was left was a steady downpour. "Where's Braden?"
"He was on his bio-comm with Prince Argos a few minutes ago," Feired said.
"Pater never gives him a break, does he?" River put his arm over Skye's shoulder as they waited.
"He promised to tell me if it got to be too much, and I've been checking on him. So far he's being honest." Skye realized it had been a few hours since he'd connected with his other wing-mates.
Skye sent a mental poke through his bond. Hey, sexy. How's everyone doing?
They're all fine, but my balls are going to burst if you don't get home soon. I need you, baby. Garrett sent a mental image of exactly how Skye was needed.
Aww... I don't believe it. Pretty sure Dillon and Jerrick have been sacrificing themselves since I left.
But it's not youuuuuuu... Garrett whined.
What a drama dragon. Seriously though, all the new guys okay?
Quit worrying. Yes, they're fine. Pater and your grandparents are hovering. Other than being a little overwhelmed and overfed, they're coping well. We had wing-mates with them so they didn't freak when you crossed the veil. I think Willow has given the most exhaustive tour ever of the Royal Gardens, and several of them have found favorite spots. Kwill is here with me and he can give an update to the others.
Thanks, love. I miss you. I'll let you know when we reach the compound; otherwise, I'll partially shield so you don't get distracted.
Love you, Skye. Come back to me soon.
Garrett's presence faded to the background as Skye rebuilt his shields and turned his attention to Corbin who was walking toward them.
"Well?" River asked.
"Small change in plans. Emperor Darius has to return to Capital City. They found something when interrogating one of the contacts you found in that wolf shifter's head. The guard didn't say what. They've dispatched a shuttle to pick us up here and get us close to the compound where we can pick up a ground transport."
"That's not as bad as I expected. Father wasn't going to join us at the compound anyway, just drop us off. Did they say if there were any more problems or issues with the resettlement?"
"Not that were mentioned. My understanding was that it was just the storm," Corbin said.
"I hope the storm didn't freak out the relocated dark fae too much," River said.
"From what we saw and heard from the dark fae on Hell World, I imagine it wasn't anything compared to the storms they're used to. They also had much better protection in the village than they had before," Corbin said.
"How long until the shuttle arrives?" Skye was pleased to see that Braden had joined them.
"Won't be long. I've already asked Chief Roan if there's someone who can take us back to the meadow." Braden pulled up something on his bio-comm and was scanning it for a moment before he spoke again. "Prince Argos said the candidates should be there before we arrive. You're not to fret and that he loves you and knows you'll do great."
"Kinda scary how well he knows you, bro." River punched Skye's arm, and Skye realized that his brother hit a lot harder than he used to.
"Gentle, River. You forget you're a big strong dragon now. I'll have bruises, and then I'll have to tell Garrett and Nik you were mean to me." Skye grinned.
"You're such a git. Where's your sense of humor?"
Skye tapped his chin. "Hmm..." He turned to River and smirked. "I think my mean little brother beat it out of me."
"This is all delightful, children, but are we ready? Our wagons are here." Taleel arched an eyebrow and gave a look worthy of Pater. Skye was impressed.
It didn't take long until the group was boarding the boxy military craft to depart.
'Mistral, I might be spoiled. I was really hoping for one of Father's with the big comfy chairs.' Skye absently buckled his harness as he watched Taleel board. Well, mostly he watched his body-because who wouldn't?
Taleel stopped and checked Skye's straps and made sure he was secure.
Skye rolled his eyes. "I'm not a child, Taleel. I know how to buckle myself in."
"You were too busy watching my crotch to pay proper attention. I'm not taking chances with you."
'He's not wrong.' Mistral chuckled.
"I'll forgive you. Now if you could turn around a moment so I can ogle your ass..."
"Hey, it was my turn to stare at his ass." River scowled as he was sitting opposite Skye.
"I think he should just drop his pants and do a show for all of us. I mean really, hiding up on the Temero and avoiding us all this time. Not fair to deprive his wing brothers like that." Corbin's grin couldn't have gotten any bigger.
"Yeah, now we're talking!" River fist punched the air.
"I see discipline and etiquette have declined during my absence." Taleel was wearing a stern expression, and if Skye couldn't sense the emotions underneath, he'd have thought his black dragon disapproved. But no, Taleel was regretting how much he'd missed with the others.
Once Taleel was seated and strapped in next to Skye, he reached over and gripped the muscled thigh. "Don't worry, Taleel, we'll make up for what you missed."
"Only some of it," River objected. "No worms and no beetles."
"Pretty sure Skye was thinking more of the sexy times," Feired put in. "Wait, have you even experienced the Kwill Beck double whammy? It'll make your wings pop."
Skye couldn't repress the laughter at Taleel's expression, making him wonder if the black dragon's imagination was that good or someone had told him what it meant.
Corbin leaned forward to catch his wing-mate's attention. "Braden, you might need to help Taleel with a project plan and schedule. With all the wing-mates we've added and some of their appetites, he's got a lot of catching up to do. Maybe stock up on some of that salve the elves gave us; it does wonders."
"Got it." Braden had already been doing something on his bio-comm and didn't look up as he continued. "Taleel, send me your calendar and what hours I can claim. I'll have you sexed up in no time."
"Taleel, how do you feel about vampires? I swear it's worth the donation," Feired asked.
"Father Dragon, what is this? A conspiracy?" Taleel asked.
Skye squeezed Taleel's thigh again. "Aw, come on. Wing-mates take care of each other. And you need to strengthen your connections." Feired's comment reminded Skye that he ought to check in on Basil and Rebel. He wasn't sure who was monitoring them, and as much as he loved Garrett, that wasn't his strength.
Kwill? Skye poked at the psion and waited.
Skye? Everything okay? Garrett told us that the centaur issue was resolved, and you were on the way to the compound.
Yeah. I wondered if anyone had kept tabs on Cocachet, Basil, and Rebel. Garrett said the guys at the palace were doing okay. Skye felt overwhelmed at how many he had under his care and somewhat guilty for not being there with them.
We are. Beck is staying close to those you brought back and trying to assess their mental state. I've been monitoring the others. Everyone is coping and we made sure they knew what was happening when you went into Underhill. The warning helped. Though I would prefer if I could be with you. Perhaps something to address with Prince Argos? I swear I'm well enough to travel.
He's just being protective. I think he felt responsible for what happened to you and Beck. I'm not sure if you could sense it since we were in Underhill, but I had to create a bond of sorts with the centaur foal, and by extension, with the centaur couple who will be raising her and Grandma B. It wasn't a wing-mate bond, but the spell still used my magic and used me as the anchor.
Interesting. Kwill was silent for a moment. I don't sense any new connections, but that could be because the others are across the veil. When you return, I'll have to look more closely, and I'd like you to explain exactly what you did.
Sure. But everyone's okay, and I don't need to be worried about any of the new guys I've bonded?
They are. I'll confess to using Venci to help me coordinate and ensure no one is being left to themselves. Hopefully your excursion will be brief, and you can return soon. I think they need time with you. It helps strengthen the bond and reassures them while they adjust. Your young dwarf and siren especially. I've asked Kleitos to give them extra attention as they seem to be drawn to him.
Thank you, Kwill. Skye opened his eyes to see River staring at him, a smirk on his face.
What?
You worry too much. Beck said all is good, though Jhaeros may have joined forces with Christos and Rilien in torturing Arcturus. Not a concern, Beck is keeping tabs and will intervene if it goes too far, River sent.
"Is there a reason for the death grip on my thigh?" Taleel had a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Sorry. I do like your thigh, but no, I guess I'm channeling some stress. Have you been to this place before?" Skye still had concerns about what was being done at their secret lab.
"No, but I've heard of it. There are a few other similar installations on Draga. I've never had a reason to visit one."
"It doesn't bother you?"
Taleel turned to look at him. "Why should it? I can personally vouch for the benefits of what they do, having been a ground soldier who was inoculated. I saw a fellow soldier who refused the vaccine for the planet where we were stationed die an incredibly painful death. There is some scary shit on some of the worlds in the Empire. And what's worse is the stuff you can't even see."
"Then why all the secrecy? Doesn't seem like it should be necessary if they're developing ways to keep the citizens safe." Skye tried to think if any of the big bio-chemical companies on Earth were ever mentioned as security risks.
"Because of the biotech weapons used in the Great War, the Empire is very careful to guard anything that could be made into a weapon or misused. While many of the samples they have are native to some worlds, they can still be deadly if not properly handled. Since they develop the vaccines, antitoxins, and cures, there are thousands of substances in those facilities that can kill. I'm glad they are so well protected," Taleel said.
"I hadn't thought of it that way." Skye could see Taleel's point but still had doubts.
"Any idea of how many shifters need to be 'treated'?"
"Pater didn't say. If it works like the last time, I'll find out when we arrive." Skye nodded toward Braden. "He may also have sent the information to Braden." Skye noticed an odd expression on Taleel's face. "What is it?"
"Just thinking that one of the shifters you change could be my mate. I know it's a long shot." Taleel shrugged.
"Don't worry, I fully intend on helping you find your person." Skye planned to find mates for all his wing. He still wasn't sure how it worked, but he and Mistral suspected the ability was part of being a "father dragon."
Taleel gave him a skeptical look but didn't argue.
Conversation turned to recounting their adventures in Underhill and on Hell World and answering questions for those who hadn't been there. Skye appreciated the distraction and was surprised when the pilot announced they were landing.
Similar to their trip with Prince Argos, a ground transport was waiting for them, but rather than a hanger, they were in a heavily wooded area with just enough clearance for the shuttle to land.
"Don't people get suspicious when they see the military vehicle?" River asked.
"No. The compound is hidden under a military equipment maintenance station, so vehicles of all types are in and out regularly," one of the Imperial Guards answered.
"That works." River buckled in, and the last of the guards pulled the hatch closed. "They have a thing against windows."
"They make you vulnerable. There isn't a transparent material that's as strong as the armor plating. There are usually some small viewports you can open in case the external cameras are damaged," Taleel explained.
"I like seeing where I'm going," River grumbled.
Taleel laughed. "The driver can see; that's what counts."
They had been traveling for a while when the transport came to a stop. Moments later, it moved on, and Skye remembered this from their last visit. There was a second stop with a longer pause before they were moving again. Just like before, it happened several more times before the transport powered down. There was a ping, and then the driver announced that it was safe to exit as the outer hatch opened.
'They really need to work on the ambiance, Mistral.' He looked around what he thought of as the underground loading dock, all done in elegant dirty dark concrete. The guards led them to the security doors. It wasn't hard to believe they were below ground. Skye looked more closely at the heavy security doors as they passed through. They appeared as if they could withstand some heavy fire or explosions for sure.
"Gentlemen, welcome," a man in a medic's coat greeted. He was backed by two soldiers with their weapons prominently displayed.
"Sir." Corbin stepped forward. "I understand we won't be able to stay with the princes. Is there a location close by where we can wait?"
Skye didn't know that Corbin had been briefed, but he obviously knew what was happening, perhaps more than Skye.
"You'll be able to wait in the observation room. I assure you that this is a secure facility, and they will be quite safe." The medic looked at the group, and his expression told Skye he thought the number of protectors was excessive. Skye didn't feel the need to explain that four of them were friends, not guards.
Don't worry, guys. This is the way it went before when Prince Argos brought us. River and I can still use telepathy, and we'll keep the connection open so we can speak freely.
You'll be able to see us once we're in the procedure room, River added.
Two more soldiers arrived to escort Skye's wing-mates and the four Imperial Guards to the observation room while the medic led them to the prep room.
"We already have the candidates staging for the procedure. As soon as you're masked and gloved, we'll be able to start. Unless you have an objection, we'll use the same process as before. Only the operating medic and anesthesiologist know you're here and who you are. The others in the room, including the guards, will assume you're part of the medical staff. Our head of security felt it best that as few people as possible know about your presence," the medic explained.
Skye and River didn't need any instruction on what to do when they got to the prep room.
Wanna bet Pater was behind the secrecy? River wasn't recognizable by the time he put on the scrubs and mask.
I'm sure. I expect there are other key people who know we're here.
These are shifters who asked for the change, right? River caught Skye's eye with a look of concern.
That's what Pater said. Supposedly, wealthy or influential shifters who tried to pull strings to get the new treatment. Skye bit back a laugh as he pulled on the gloves and adjusted his cap.
Oh, I'm sure Pater was soooo put out. This is exactly what he and Father wanted. Are we still going to check them, just to be sure? River paused then turned back to face Skye. Also need to make sure there aren't any with questionable motives.
Good point. The others won't be able to tell so let's do it the same as before. Pretend each one is successful and we can let Pater deal with it later. Skye wasn't struggling with making the change on these men like he had on his first visit. In theory, they knew exactly what they were getting, even if they didn't have the "how" of it correct.
"Okay, let's do this." Skye approached the medic who was holding the door. "How many patients are we treating?"
"We have eight shifters being prepped. The first is already in the procedure room. A wolf."
You going to do this for Gregg at some point? Only seems fair, River asked.
If he wants. Mistral says I have to, but I'd rather it be his choice.
The operating room was set up as it had been before with the soldiers out of sight and a team waiting for them by the patient.
Guys, you still with me? Skye sent.
We are, Corbin responded.
So the way this works is River and I do a quick dive into the shifter's head to make sure this is what they want and that they're not a bad guy in disguise. If they're good to go, I unblock their bonding ability. If they're not, I pretend to and then signal the others to proceed with the fake procedure. Unless they're a mage, they won't be able to tell a difference.
"Welcome. We're ready to go. If you don't mind completing your check, we can start," the lead medic said.
You'll tell us if any of them are ours, right? Feired asked.
Of course. Skye looked at the young man on the table and waited for River to join him.
Skye, something's not right. Storm is agitated and pacing and telling me we're in danger. River stepped into Skye until they were touching. I'm going to power up, just in case. I've got your back.
You hear that, guys? Be on alert. I'm starting on the shifter now. Skye had his shields down already but he couldn't do a mind dive on the wolf and scan the room at the same time. He'd have to trust River to keep them safe.
