Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 61: Going Green by Tripp Savidge
- Scene 1 *
Skye closed his eyes and tried not to think about hanging in mid-air. He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of his guards, but he was not a fan of the anti-grav lift. Give him nice solid stairs any day.
"Sir?" one of the guards said.
Opening his eyes, Skye realized they were back in the palace, and Dillon was waiting for him on the platform. He stepped out of the glowing shaft, and his shoulders relaxed as he felt the solid floor beneath him.
"Prince Skye." Dillon's greeting was more reserved than usual, and Skye wondered if something was wrong.
"I'm guessing you know that Prince Argos requested my presence?"
"I saw. Braden set up my bio-comm, so I'm copied on all the non- confidential messages."
"Do I have time to change first?" Skye was tired and ready to be out of uniform. After a morning in his new office, he'd spent the afternoon catching up at the Academy. They weren't cutting him any slack, regardless of the reasons for his absence.
Dillon checked the time. "Sorry, but I think it would be best to go straight there."
"Is everything okay? You don't seem like yourself." Skye was debating dropping his shields to see what he could pick up.
"The new guys are all doing fine. Nothing you need to worry about. And don't try to peek. I met you so we could talk on the way. I've been helping Venci and Braden and have some updates."
"Okay..." He had to wonder what they'd given to Dillon. Skye didn't consider himself that important and didn't think he'd have enough work to even keep Venci and Braden occupied.
"I checked in on Captain Nekko as you requested. He's resting but seems to be otherwise recovered. They moved him to a private room. The medic attending said they were observing him but didn't see any concerns."
"When will he be released?" Skye wanted to know and yet didn't since he knew the bond needed to be finished and wasn't sure if he was ready.
"Probably tomorrow unless some other symptoms develop." Dillon paused as they passed some others in the hallway; once out of sight, he resumed. "Not sure if they told you, but the guys asked me to investigate the centaur issue. Lady Telawynn helped me make a few connections, and while it's still urgent that you visit soon, the elf mages have Caladwen in a magical stasis. From what I could find, this is not the first time a pregnancy has resulted between a centaur and an elf; however, it is very rare, and everyone agreed that it was because of the delea grove. Seems the prior recorded cases also happened there."
"Isn't Lady Telawynn your great-grandmother? And Caladwen's your grandmother? Why do you use their names?"
Dillon grimaced. "Caladwen forbade anyone from referring to her in any way except by her name or title. I guess being a 'grandmother' didn't fit with her image. For Lady Telawynn, it feels awkward, though she'd scold me if she overheard. Growing up, I only knew her as Gram gram, and it's not like we were close. She stayed in Underhill...er, I guess Caladwen imprisoned her there." Dillon shrugged.
Skye stopped and turned to Dillon. "Gram gram. Looking like she does now or..."
"I guess she always used her glamour with us. We only ever saw her in Underhill, and until recently, I'd not seen her in this form. She explained that it helped avoid conflict with Caladwen."
"There's a long story there. Maybe another time. Back to Caladwen... Did the prior pregnancies work out?" Skye wasn't surprised about the grove. Even in his limited conversations, he'd heard that Underhill was responsible for many of the unusual pairings.
"They did, but at least in all the cases we could find, the expectant mother stayed in Underhill."
"Which they didn't do for Caladwen because they bound her magic and thought it would make her go crazy, right?" Skye clarified.
"Pretty sure she was already crazy." Dillon rolled his eyes.
Skye laughed. "Yeah, true. So, if that's the case, why do they need me? Why not just move her back to Underhill?"
Dillon stiffened and took a long pause. "Because..."
"Because why?" Skye did his best to keep his tone light. He could feel Dillon's apprehension. "You know I don't hold you responsible just because you're the one telling me."
"I know." Dillon took a deep breath. "It's because Keeper said so and something about the Seer. He told them that you had to make the decision, and Underhill would only permit her return if you asked and were the one to bring her across."
"Well, shit." Skye stopped walking. 'Mistral, does this feel like another setup to you?'
'It is possible that there are complications we're not aware of. While I agree we're being herded again, there could be a good reason.'
"Was there anything else?" Skye asked.
"Her caregivers have raised concerns and think she's become more unstable."
"Is there anything I can do before we visit in person?"
"Not that anyone has shared. There are a few more people that I haven't been able to reach yet. I'll keep trying, and I suppose we could try and talk to Keeper..." Dillon didn't sound very confident about the idea.
They'd arrived at the conservatory where Skye was to meet with Prince Argos.
"Thank you, Dillon. Maybe we can talk more at dinner."
Dillon bowed and stepped back as the guards opened the door for Skye. He was momentarily surprised when none of the guards joined him, but he realized it wouldn't be necessary if they had all the entrances guarded. Skye glanced around, trying to remember the path. The foliage and planters blocked the view, and none of the pathways went all the way through. It dawned on him that it was similar to his office, no straight lines. He walked toward the opposite wall, remembering that Prince Argos's spot was in the back left corner.
Partway, he heard voices to the right. Huh, maybe he moved or is using a different spot, Skye thought and followed the sound. Stepping out into an open area, he found Lady Telawynn and his grandmother having tea at a small table surrounded by flowers.
"Skye! So good to see you. Were you looking for us?" Nancy asked.
"Hey, Grandma." Skye bent to give her a kiss on the cheek and bowed to her companion. "Lady Telawynn."
"You look really good in a uniform, sweetheart." Nancy took his hand.
"I think you could say that Skye looks good in whatever he wears...or doesn't." Lady Telawynn smiled and winked at him.
"Did you need one of us, dear?" Nancy asked.
"No, Grandma. I was supposed to meet with Pater but heard voices and..."
"Opposite corner. He is painting, and I'm afraid his subject today is a little too distracting for your grandmother and me." Lady Telawynn grinned as she brought the teacup to her lips.
"Is it Treor?"
"I don't know his name. He's the pretty one who looks like he's been covered in fairy dust and gems. He makes me think unladylike thoughts, so we decided a little space was in order," Nancy said.
"I don't think it's fairy dust, but I must agree that he has a fae quality. Makes you wonder..." Lady Telawynn let the comment fade, and it was clear to Skye that she was lost in thought.
"It was really great to see you both, but I should be on my way. Prince Argos is expecting me."
"Oh, Skye, before I forget. Dillon may need some reassurance. Regent Thillean reinstated Dillon to the Court of Light and the royal family. Caladwen's prior accusations have all been struck from the record. Dillon seems to think it jeopardizes his position with you," Lady Telawynn said.
"What? No way. I don't think it changes anything." Skye paused, wondering if he'd missed something. "Does it?"
"Not as long as you don't mind. There will be those in the court who think it's beneath him, but that's their issue. Not yours." Lady Telawynn gave him a reassuring smile.
"I'll talk to him, thank you." Skye kissed his grandmother's cheek and bowed to Lady Telawynn.
"It's good to have you back, dear," Nancy called as Skye started to leave.
'It is good to be back, Mistral. Now, if we could just stick around for a while.' Since he was already at the back wall, Skye followed it to find the Prince. 'This place is huge.'
'I rather like it. If the weather is bad, you can come here and still feel like you're outside,' Mistral said.
"Skye, I'm glad you could join me. Please, take a look and see if I'm capturing him," Prince Argos called as Skye stepped out of the foliage.
He approached and looked at the canvas and then at the lorikean, Treor. "It's amazing."
"Thank you. It helps to have such a stunning subject. Let me do a few more touches, and then we can talk."
Skye felt a little warm and doubted it was from the sun since it was cloudy. Treor was "covered," but it didn't hide his grace or beauty. He wondered how Prince Argos could spend so much time with the lorikean and not be affected.
'And yet... it's not our magic,' Mistral observed. 'Can we fuck him again?'
'Stop! Now is not the time or place...' Skye realized he was breathing harder, and his dick was trying to break through his trousers. His thoughts were interrupted by a hissing sound.
Looking back at Prince Argos, he saw his pater set an aerosol can to the side before looking up at him.
"Better? It may take a minute or two."
"What?" Skye was confused but was starting to feel less distracted by Treor.
"It's the pheromones. They're quite strong-especially now that Treor is feeling better. The spray is a neutralizer." Argos returned to the painting.
"Like a nymph?" Skye remembered that he'd been told that was why nymphs were so hard to resist.
"Yes, but stronger and effective against more species. I thoroughly researched lorikeans before I invited one home, you know. I probably know more about him and his abilities than he knows himself. I would venture to say he finds you attractive."
"Why do you say that?" Skye decided it was safer to watch the prince paint than it was to look at Treor.
"It causes the pheromones to spike when he's with someone he wants. But don't get upset with him; they have no control over it."
"How have you not..." Skye gestured to the divan where Treor reclined.
Prince Argos laughed. "What makes you think I haven't? It took a while to get the neutralizer perfected, and it wasn't exactly a hardship. There is a reason why the lorikeans are some of the most popular pleasure workers."
Skye stared at Prince Argos for a moment. 'But I thought he wasn't into men. Did I misunderstand?'
'Did you forget the blond guard? And while I know you don't like to think about it, if you put some of our observations together, it would seem that he likes both men and women. It's not out of character for him to be discreet and secretive about it.'
'That's a good point. Also may help to balance Father, who isn't the least bit subtle.'
'Um...dragon...' Mistral poked.
"Thank you, Treor. That will be all for today. And as I said earlier, it's up to you on whether you accept Lady Telawynn's invitation."
"As you please, Prince Argos." Treor stood and bowed, being careful to keep the drapes wrapped around him. He smiled and bowed his head to Skye before departing.
'Should I ask?'
'Do you want to know?' There was amusement in Mistral's tone.
'No.' Skye dusted off invisible dust from his jacket. Focus. "Did you need to speak with me, Pater?"
"I did. That would be why I asked you to join me." Argos raised an eyebrow giving Skye a serious look. "He was getting to you, I take it?"
"The spray helped." Skye could feel the heat rushing to his face.
Prince Argos began gathering his supplies and cleaning his brushes. "He feels somewhat indebted to you, if you weren't aware. There might also be some hero worship." Argos turned to him with a grin. "I also gather you rather impressed him with your sexual skills."
"Uh..." Skye thought his face might catch on fire.
"Don't be embarrassed. Treor is very attractive, and I can assure you he is as much into sex as any dragon. That's why so many of his kind go into being pleasure workers. They need intimacy and physical connection. Unfortunately, the Pleasure Workers Union does not allow them discretion on their partners. One of the reasons I am so adamant that he has the final say on any of his liaisons."
"Is it typical for a pleasure worker to be at the palace?" Skye thought it a rather odd notion.
Prince Argos put his hand on Skye's arm and looked into his eyes. "Skye, you are so precious. It is common for any wealthy household to employ pleasure workers for their guests. The palace typically has four or five on staff. They are also invaluable when young dragonlings go through the change."
"Where? I've never seen any." Skye was wondering if he was teasing him.
Argos laughed as he continued to work on the brushes without looking up. "And why would you need their services? Of course you haven't seen them. You already have more willing people than you can handle, but I assure you they are here. We have a dragi, two nymphs, and a Pembran male. Though none of them compare to Treor."
"Oh." It dawned on Skye that there was still a lot about Draga and Empire culture he didn't know. "Did we need to take a walk?"
"No, we can stay here. It looks a little cloudy, and we might get rain." Argos pointed to a chair off to the side as he sat on the stool.
"Is there a problem?" Skye was a little nervous when he didn't know why they were meeting.
"There are always opportunities. But nothing for you to fret over. There are so many things happening I wanted to connect and go over some updates, and I thought this..." Argos gestured to the conservatory, "was more pleasant than my office."
"You're aware of the situation with Caladwen?"
Argos grimaced. "Yes. One of the items on my list. You'll be joining Darius's entourage tomorrow to make the trip. He is welcoming some of the dark fae-I believe the brownies who came from Hell World and the hobgoblins-to a reclaimed elf village in the preserve. It's not too far from the centaurs. Joining him provides additional security as well as a cover story so the media doesn't pounce."
"I didn't realize it would happen that quickly." Skye frowned, wondering who'd be able to go with him. The Academy had been rather put out by their absence and was demanding several of his team put in extra hours to catch up.
"I hate to pressure you, but you may want to finish with Captain Nekko before you leave. I trust our staff to keep their silence, but I don't want to keep him here on the palace grounds any longer than necessary."
"Dillon said he was doing better." Skye felt a little queasy at the implication of Argos's words.
"The medics told me that other than being somewhat dehydrated and tired, he should be fine. Whatever you did appears to have resolved his malady." Argos's tone told Skye that was a question.
"I set the bond, but I haven't marked him. The mark seems to work better if we're...you know..."
"Having sex?" Argos asked.
"Yeah. There's something about that, with the mark, that seems to make it stronger and grounds or stabilizes our connection. I wish we knew more; all of this is trial and error."
"The priests should be done with the scrolls soon, and then Kwill can begin deciphering."
"Have they found anything yet?" Skye was ever hopeful.
"No, Skye. But they haven't tried either. The experts they have capturing the documents aren't linguists and don't have the ability to translate. That will have to come later. Tomorrow, before you leave, I'd like you to come to my office. I've arranged a meeting with the psion ambassador and Tennat."
"This is where you want me to read them?" The thought made Skye squirm, but he understood how it wouldn't be right to ask Kwill.
"Yes. We're missing something. And there's another thing I need you to do on your return trip from the preserve. We have several more shifters that we need made compatible as dragon mates."
"But-" Skye started to object, and Argos held up a hand.
"This is not a whim. These are...I'd guess you'd say shifters with powerful families or political clout who have 'formally' petitioned the emperor to be included in the 'program.' Of course, they aren't so forward as to say the experiments and certainly aren't asking the prince to take pity on them. But I'm sure you can see how their inclusion would be to our benefit." Prince Argos sat patiently waiting for Skye.
"It would help Father's plans." Skye sighed as he could too easily see why it was important. They also wouldn't want to anger the people they were trying to pull in. "I'll want River with me."
"Of course." Argos nodded. "You'll receive all the details on your return trip." The prince visibly relaxed. "I spoke with Master Mage Quanta this morning. He shared that you made some interesting discoveries while in Underhill."
"That's somewhat broad. Was there something specific? What we learned could probably fill a book." Skye was back to being nervous.
"The magical capabilities of dragons. He's asked for our blessing on continuing lessons for your dragons. We'll be monitoring your wing's success to see if it's something we should roll out for other dragons. I also agreed to his request to include Mattekin and your other new wing members. While I understand you're not sure that they all have magical powers, Quanta suggested they at least be tested."
"He told you that some of the dark fae are just now coming into their powers?"
"He did. I'll have the court mages prepared if any of them manifest while you're gone. Quanta seems to think it is likely." Argos sat back, watching.
"He does? He didn't say anything to me..." Skye tried to think. 'I'm not missing a conversation, am I, Mistral?'
'No, but he could have thought of it after. He had more time with the other dark fae who came into their powers. Maybe there is a pattern.'
"I believe he said something to the effect that you tend to draw those with strong magic or powers. I have to say that I agree. You already know there's something more to your siren."
"True. And I'd feel better having Quanta and his mages helping us," Skye admitted.
"I also think Rilien will enjoy having company. He's been feeling a bit lonely."
"Are you really okay with all the new guys I've brought in?"
"Absolutely. I appreciate the life you have brought into this palace and all the new boys to dote on. I couldn't be happier. I do love a good project, and you've given me several."
"Thanks, I think." Skye wasn't sure how to interpret his wing being a project. Did that mean particular individuals, the group as a whole, or something else?
"We won't be with you for dinner this evening, but I did ensure all of your wing members at the palace were notified. I thought you might like some time with them while Nancy, Lady Telawynn, and I are discussing the bonding ceremony."
"What time do I need to leave tomorrow?"
"Darius's secretary will send the details once everything is finalized. Since you'll be traveling with him, you aren't required to take your own guards. If you prefer to have a couple with you, that's your decision."
"Thank you, enjoy your dinner this evening." Skye stood and was going to bow but quickly changed it to a hug when he saw Argos's reaction.
- Scene 2 *
"Why now?" Skye was not happy.
"Because there are things that have to be done, and it's my responsibility as second. We've been gone a while, Skye. I can't just ignore my job. The launch is going to happen before we know it, and there's a lot of work that has to be completed and people waiting for me to do my piece. I can't just up and leave every time I want. I need to put in extra hours to catch up." Garrett was using his calming "don't piss Skye off" voice. It wasn't working.
"You promised me we wouldn't be separated again! What am I supposed to do, ignore Caladwen and put the baby at risk?"
"No, you can't do that. Not all of the wing is in this bind; you can still take a few brothers with you. I'm sorry I can't go."
"I don't like being apart. I need you."
"So... guess telling you that I'll have to go back up to space dock in a couple of weeks isn't good either?" Garrett cringed as if he expected Skye to hit him.
'It's a thought,' Mistral whispered.
Skye took a deep breath and concentrated on getting dressed for dinner. "For how long?"
"A few days, maybe. A week at most?"
"You're not sure?" Skye was very aware that his mate was blocking him.
"It all depends on how the tests go and if everything is working the way it should." Garrett had moved out of reach.
'If he didn't think it wouldn't take longer, he wouldn't be shielding us out,' Mistral said.
'Agreed, but I understand he doesn't have a choice. He is an officer, and Underhill kept us away for quite a while. Doesn't mean I have to like it.'
"You're going to make this up to me."
"How?" Garrett looked concerned.
"I don't know yet, but we'll think of something. And so we're perfectly clear, Mistral is just as upset with you right now as I am." Skye walked to the door, not waiting for Garrett. But his mate caught up to him by the time he was in the hallway. Skye glanced at his messages as they walked since he wasn't sure where dinner was being held.
"The dining hall," Garrett said.
"Oh, because that's so descriptive," Skye muttered.
"Skye, please. I'm sorry." Garrett said.
They reached the "dining hall," and Skye was pleased to find so many of his wing-mates already there. Even so, they were dwarfed by the space. Unlike the Palace Banquet Hall, this room was paneled in dark wood, decorated with intricate carvings, and large colorful tapestries. Fireplaces large enough to stand in stood at both ends of the hall. The vaulted ceiling soared over forty feet above them with graceful arches and a mural of the daytime sky with dragons in flight.
Skye noticed that Kibli and Revali beckoned and saved him a seat with another for Garrett opposite him.
"It's good to see you both. Are you doing well?"
"It's all a bit overwhelming," Kibli whispered, and Revali nodded in agreement. "But everyone has been very kind, and Arcturus has been helping."
"Good. I know that lessons aren't always fun, but it will help you navigate your way around this new world."
"Nik and Kleitos are taking us on a tour of the palace and grounds after dinner. Nik said he knows all the best spots." Revali paused as if thinking. "He didn't say for what, but I'm sure he'll explain, and it will be fun. This place is huge! Much more complicated than the caves and tunnels."
"Have you been using your bio-comms? The AI Zeus can help you find your way," Skye asked.
"I hate to bother him, he must be really busy taking care of this huge palace and all the people," Kibli said.
Skye's mouth opened, but he felt a nudge from Mistral before he formed words.
'Don't bother. He's not ready, and it would take longer than dinner. Ask Arc to explain it to them,' Mistral said.
'Good point.'
As the first course was served, Skye realized that Argos must have asked the chef to do something special. Even for the palace, the food was a little over the top. He observed his wing-mates, doing a mental check of who was present and who wasn't. Zo, Eluf, Basil, Rebel, Nekko, and Cocachet were missing. He was pleased to see that Ian had included his mate, Nels, and Skye assumed that Corey's mate, Ronan must still be out on tour.
'This is the most we've had together...ever.' Mistral's joy sent a tingle through Skye.
'We also have more wing-mates than we did when we were at the cabin. Not a bad thing.' Skye felt a sense of peace and satisfaction at having his people together.
Ya know, bro. I think we are going to outgrow the breakfast room. Good thing we have options. This room is cool. River's mental voice interrupted Skye's thoughts.
It is. As Skye ate, he caught snippets of conversation but was content to enjoy the food and wallow in the bond connections, and watch the others interact and get to know each other. A few words broke through, and Skye turned his attention to Mica and Corbin.
"What was that?"
"We were talking about the riots and demonstrations," Mica said.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Skye thought if it was big, someone would have mentioned it before.
"Haven't you seen any of the news vids? It's hard to miss," Jayce asked.
Skye shook his head and waited as the others played eye tag. He guessed that Mica lost.
"A radical group of dragi, they call themselves Daico-day-kho. Dragi against Imperial Colonization and Occupation, are demonstrating against the acceptance of the dark fae. There have been riots in several cities and attacks on fae citizens. They've also tried to enter the fae lands and damaged some of the surrounding area. They tend to rely on explosives and high-tech weapons, but the Protectorate's mage squad got them to disperse, and a combination of mages and soldiers are patrolling the borders. They wouldn't be able to get in anyway since the fae's magic protects their land from intruders. Warnings have been issued, and they've advised fae citizens to take extra safety precautions," Mica explained.
"That's awful. Why?" Skye figured there was more to the story. "And what is a mage squad?"
"Daico is very outspoken about this being 'their' planet and that the empire doesn't have the right to grant citizenship to other races. It's a very old argument," Corbin said.
"The mage squad is what it sounds like, a group of battle mages that are part of Protectorate. One of the few groups remaining who still value magic-and even so, the only squad left is on Draga," Mica added.
"Is it the dragi's planet?" Skye didn't want to assume.
"Oo, I got this. We just studied this in one of my history classes." Nik jumped into the conversation. "The dragi are considered the only indigenous humanoid species on Draga; however, the dragons have been here longer than recorded history. Or at least the recorded history we have available since the Great War. So a few thousand years at least. The group Daico was formed around the time that the dragons made this the capital of the Empire. That was also when immigration to Draga changed the power dynamics, even though the dragi outnumber all the other races combined."
"Like on Earth, just because you have the numbers doesn't mean you have the power," River added.
"That's true, but it is even more complex and unbalanced than you might guess." Kleitos's voice joined the conversation. "I expect that the inclusion of the dark fae is more of a catalyst because they are magical creatures by nature."
"And that matters, why?" Skye asked.
"The dragi are magically void. They do not have the ability to see, feel, or use magic, not even simple magic like witchcraft that requires ingredients, rituals, and spells that humans can use. They also have no natural resistance to magic," Kleitos said.
"That sounds like a setup for something really bad." Skye had a sick feeling in his stomach thinking about the potential for abuse and subversion. "So you're saying magic can be used on them, but they can't defend themselves?"
"Correct. And without any resistance, it takes very little power to affect them. That's why Protectorate uses the mage squad and why the dragi will feel disproportionately threatened by the dark fae. The mage squad can cast spells that calm the demonstrators and make them forget why they're fighting long enough for them to return to their lives. Unfortunately, when they recover, they are even angrier and more violent, and so the cycle continues."
"That's fucking depressing." River crossed his arms and sat back. "Don't they have rights?"
"They have the same rights as any citizen of the empire. They can hold any position, take any career, and have the same legal recourse as any other. But no citizen has the right to cause harm to others or their property." Mica leaned forward with his elbows on the table so he could look at Skye. "Protectorate can use the same tactics against any citizen, they choose to use magic with the dragi because it is the most effective."
"It's one of those things we don't tend to talk about." Garrett looked uncomfortable as he spoke. "We all 'know' they are at a disadvantage. And the reality is that while they 'can' take any position, they are up against dragons, shifters, and fae who live much longer and have other abilities that give them an edge. Dragi are equally intelligent and driven, but when a dragon has had the job for a few centuries, what's a dragi to do when they are lucky to live eighty years?"
"I'm not surprised they're demonstrating. But it sounds like a no-win situation." River caught Skye's eye. This sounds totally fucked, but I've got no ideas on what should be done differently.
I was thinking the same. Sort of like their approach to kidnapping humans to be mates isn't right, but what is a better solution? I'm bummed that the more we learn, the less utopian the empire is and the more it shares with home.
Then again, we're now dragons and have the best mates ever. Maybe if we think about it, we can come up with something? River suggested.
Skye thought it was fortunate that the conversation was interrupted by the servers bringing the next course. Thinking of the fae, Skye wondered about Bram and Noud. They're probably re-thinking their decision to leave Lady Telawynn's service.
"Bram, Noud, are you finding enough to keep you occupied?" Skye watched the fae guards turn their gazes to Mica.
"Um...about that..." Mica looked uncomfortable again.
"Yeah?"
"Bram and Noud will be joining the classes for the Imperial Guard. Emperor Darius and Admiral Cocachet already put things in motion, so they've skipped all the preliminary steps. They'll be assigned to you once they've been assessed and completed any necessary training to bring them up to speed."
Skye sat back, feeling stunned. "Already?"
"Yeah. I know it happened quickly. Something else that Cocachet said he'll need to discuss with you and Garrett... Sorry, this is awkward. You'll need to think about setting up a chain of command within your guard and designate an official lead to report to Devroe. Admiral Cocachet said that while we can keep reporting to Devroe, we need to be structured as an independent platoon."
"That makes sense. I was wondering how long they'd leave us alone. We've got too many guards for Devroe not to insist." Garrett nudged Skye's shield until he opened up. It's not a bad thing, more a formality than anything else. We're already treating Mica as the lead, we'll just make it official.
Okay. You'll help figure out what we need to satisfy them? Much as Skye wanted to stay angry with Garrett, it wasn't working.
Of course. I love you. Garrett's eyes showed his emotion even if Skye couldn't feel it through their connection.
Love you too. Skye returned his attention to Bram and Noud. "Are you both okay with this? I'm not sure what you planned for..."
"We are. Noud and I decided we wanted to serve you after we saw how you worked with your wing on the alien planet. They said we may not be cleared to join you by the time you go into space, but we are patient and will gladly serve here until we can join you." Bram looked at Noud, who nodded in agreement.
"I'm glad to have you."
Another course was being served, and conversations around the table resumed. Skye was pleased at how much their new brothers from Hell World enjoyed the food. All of them were so much happier now, something Skye didn't even need to ask since he could feel their emotions. Even Mattekin was finding that life outside of the fae kingdom wasn't nearly what he'd feared and was looking forward to the lessons Master Quanta had promised him with the others at the Mage Hall.
"Are we going to talk about the elephant in the room-the alien one?" River's voice carried over all the other conversations and had everyone's attention.
"What does he mean?" Revali whispered to Skye.
"Do you mean Captain Nekko?" Kleitos asked.
River rolled his eyes. "Duh? I can't be the only one who's feeling his confusion." There were agreeing nods and mutters around the table before the attention turned to Skye.
"What?"
"You need to finish this, bro." River gave Skye a stern look. "Does he even know what's happening? Has anyone explained the bond or the whole mind thingy to him?"
"He'd have to be conscious." Skye knew he was being defensive, and he hadn't exactly been napping and killing time. "I plan on speaking with him after dinner."
"We should talk first," Venci said.
"Why?" Skye asked.
"Your call on whether I share with the group, but you should know a little more about pelurians. It might help you frame your explanations."
"Garrett?" Skye wanted someone else's opinion.
"I'd say we should all know. We need to be able to welcome Nekko, and it's going to be awkward enough since he's my senior on the Temero. Go ahead, Venci, tell us what you know."
"To be honest, I researched after I felt Nekko in my head. I'm sure many of you were equally confused by his emotions and reactions to having a connection with us." Venci paused. "Pelurians are a hive species in a matriarchal society. The females hold all the power and control and run things. The males are the workers or breeders and serve the females. On average there is one female to every one hundred to one hundred fifty males. They work somewhat like a harem, with the males serving the female in their 'nest.' Because of the disproportionate numbers, most males take pleasure with other males. The male breeders' relationship with their 'queen' is for the sole purpose of creating new pelurians."
"Sounds horrible," Nik said.
"To each his own." Venci shrugged. "Leaving a nest or renouncing their duty to the queen is a big deal, and the exiting male is considered an 'outcast' and not permitted to return to pelurian society. That means that Nekko no longer has a 'home' as you and I would understand, and he is not welcome on the world where he was born. Because of the hive society, they do not have mates or even what we'd consider partnerships. While the males can hook up with each other, they're not permitted to be in any 'relationships' because that would take away from their dedication to the queen."
"That sucks." River glared at Venci as if it was his fault.
"But what about Fleet Admiral Kiko Matsui? She's pelurian," Skye asked.
"She's even more of an outcast than Nekko. Her leaving her home world to pursue a 'career' in the Empire instead of reproducing or rising within their society is considered a betrayal of her people. If I understand correctly, they wouldn't just consider her dead to them; they'd completely wipe any trace of her existence."
"Ouch. That's brutal. But also short-sighted. Having her in a position of power would help the pelurians. Don't they see that?" River asked.
"Sorry, I didn't get that far into their beliefs. I'm not sure they care." Venci turned to Skye. "All that to say, he may need help and will likely struggle with how close we are."
"I think we'll all need to be sensitive to his reactions and allow him some extra space and time to adjust. Skye, you may need to be direct and ask him what he needs," Kleitos said.
"Can I just say that goes for all of you? There are enough of you that I can't keep up without some help. You all need to be direct and tell me what you want or need. I'll do my best, I promise."
Not to worry, Skye. That's my job. Beck and I will be glad to tell you what you need to do, Kwill sent.
- Scene 3 *
"Thank you again for helping me. I didn't want to do this on my own, and Garrett..."
"Is being weird, I got it. I'm glad to take one for the team. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't get volunteers. Maybe because he's pelurian?" River seemed to retreat into thoughtfulness.
"Even for them, I guess he's 'alien' and not a race they're used to. I gather from what Venci shared that pelurians aren't super common. I'll check, but I'm also doubtful that Nekko would be a compatible bond-mate."
"Huh...that might be another reason the dragi have it bad." River stopped walking and turned to look at Skye. "Think about it, dragons are compatible with humans, shifters, and several types of fae-even if they didn't remember. They're not able to mate with dragi, even the females. Maybe our dragons favor races who could be partners?"
'Of course we do,' Mistral spoke up in Skye's mind. 'And don't let him fool you, Storm already told him.'
"You think the wing won't take to Nekko?" Skye hoped that wasn't the case. It wasn't really fair since Nekko had no control over it.
"It will take them time, but I think he'll be accepted. We just have to make sure they see him naked, it will be easy after that." River snickered.
'That's true. Dragons may prefer finding a mate, but good fuck buddies are right up there. Tell me we're going to fuck him. We are, right?' Mistral sounded skeptical.
'We need to ask him what he wants.' Skye hedged, not that he was opposed to the idea, but he was a little unnerved about Garrett thinking it was such a big deal. That wasn't like his mate-at all.
"Mistral agrees with you. Are you as uncomfortable about the dragi conversation as I was? Intellectually, I get it, but it feels wrong."
"Yeah, but I don't have any better ideas. Let's face it; humans wouldn't rank much higher if they couldn't be mates. Could you tell if it bothered Garrett? Nik seems to just accept it as the way things are."
"I couldn't tell if it was because he really thought it was unjust or if he was worried that I would. We might have been having a fight, so I wasn't open to his thoughts." Skye felt a little bad now that he'd had time to think about it. Not going with Skye wasn't Garrett's choice.
"Something I need to worry about?" River bristled as if he needed to protect Skye.
"No. I was miffed because he can't go with us to the centaur village."
"Oh. Neither can Nik. He has to catch up on his studies and some of the training he missed. Not sure why we're getting a pass, but I'm not going to argue or point it out to them either."
They'd reached the infirmary, and Skye had to look at one of his guards for direction. "He's in one of the recovery rooms. You happen to know where they are?"
"Yes, Prince Skye. Do you know which room?" the guard asked.
Skye pulled up his bio-comm. "Zeus, which recovery room is Captain Nekko in?"
"Room four, sir." The voice that responded was deep and cultured, making Skye smile.
Of course the guards insisted on going in first and making sure the room was safe before they'd allow Skye and River to enter. He no longer fought them and tried to be patient after Prince Argos scolded him for making their jobs more difficult.
Being in the palace, Skye wasn't surprised to see the recovery room was as luxurious as many of the other bedrooms, just smaller and with a medical bed and equipment.
"Prince Skye, Prince River, why are you here? Do you know why I'm here? Or why one of your guards has been standing at the door?" Nekko sounded confused.
"No one has told you?" Skye glanced at River, thinking that surely one of them would have said something.
"The medics asked lots of questions about how I'm feeling. Your guards didn't speak." Nekko's gaze moved back and forth between Skye and River.
"You're in the Royal Infirmary in the palace. You passed out and were in a coma for a while. Don't you remember us talking in the hospital?" River asked.
"No. Should I? Why here and not the military hospital?" Nekko seemed to be getting more suspicious.
"I promise we'll explain. But first, how are you feeling?" Skye looked over the pelurian carefully, opening his magic sight. Nothing appeared to be amiss. At Mistral's prompting, Skye also looked for a mate connection and was surprised to find that not only wasn't there a blockage, there didn't appear to be anything to block. The thread connecting Nekko to Skye and the web of wing-mates was there, but no other tendrils.
"Okay...but..."
"Voices in your head?" River asked.
"Well, not so much voices as...thoughts, emotions, feelings. It's somewhat like I'm back in the nest, yet not." Nekko looked confused.
"Might as well start from the beginning," River said.
"While you were on holiday, you collapsed and were taken to a local hospital. We think it was due to a variation of bond sickness-from the delay in establishing a bond after my magic recognized you. It has caused different issues for different people. Your body appeared to be in a coma, but we think it was more like hibernation or stasis. With me so far?" Skye lowered his shields enough to pick up any strong thoughts or emotions.
"Yes. I remember feeling progressively worse and attributed it to the stress and being over-tired. That's why I took a holiday. Now you're telling me that wasn't it?" Nekko appeared thoughtful.
"We think it is most likely but can't prove it. We don't know, and we haven't bonded any other pelurians to the wing. It's not something we can test." River shrugged and looked at Skye.
"Right. We found out where you were, and while in the hospital, I established the wing bond. You immediately began showing signs of recovery, and that enabled us to move you here." Skye stepped closer to the bed. "The strange thoughts, emotions, and feelings are your wing- mates. You now have a connection to them. We can teach you how to shield, so it's not intrusive, but you'll always sense when they're near."
Nekko was quiet for a moment. "It is similar to the link I shared with my nest mates. I had accepted that I'd never have that again, and yet...I think I like this even better. But wasn't the bonding supposed to be...intimate? From our conversation when your magic reacted, I was expecting that was part of the deal."
"It doesn't have to-"
"Skye." River's voice carried a tone of warning.
"Usually it does, but you were unconscious. That wouldn't have been right."
Nekko snorted. "It would have been fine by me, but since I don't remember your visit, I probably wouldn't have remembered that either. Disappointing. I was really looking forward to it."
"You still can." River gave Skye a stern look as if daring him to argue. "There's a lot we still don't know, but from what we've seen, the bond is stronger when there's fucking involved. It also helps if Skye marks you- sort of like shifter mates. The bite seems to help anchor the connection and make it more stable." River bumped shoulders with Skye and nodded toward Nekko.
"You are already bonded and a part of my wing. You don't have to do anything." Skye ignored Mistral's tirade.
"And if I want to?" Nekko glanced between Skye and River.
"See, he'll fit in with the wing just fine. I always tell the newbies to take the sex option, but it makes Skye grumpy." River smirked and waggled his eyebrows at Skye.
"And Prince Garrett is okay with this? I'm surprised he's not with you."
"He said it wasn't appropriate since you're his commanding officer," Skye said.
"Ah... You do know that there are no rules against it? They recommend staying within your rank, but it's a suggestion. I expect he's trying to be extra careful since he's a royal and doesn't want to give others any additional reasons to talk. Some assume that positions and honors are 'given' to him because of who he is and that they weren't earned. Not true, but you can't stop people from being jealous and starting rumors."
"Thanks, that makes more sense than what I came up with." Skye felt a little guilty for thinking Garrett was being difficult and not trusting there was a good reason.
Nekko threw back the covers and stood, stretching his arms up. "Ugh. Too long in bed. So, how are we doing this?"
For a moment Skye stood quietly, stunned at how quickly he became aroused by the pelurian. The man was a work of art. Tall, muscled...and green. Nekko's cock already stood at attention, and it was...noteworthy.
"Fuck. You're hot." River's voice was reverent.
"Thank you. I try to stay in shape. Please tell me I get to have sex with both of you. That's why you're here, correct?" Nekko reached out and ran his hand down River's arm.
"Oh, yeah. Maybe before things get hot and heavy, you should tell us what you like and don't. You know, if there's anything about pelurians we might not know."
Skye was glad River was still speaking because he was struggling. Even though he'd already established the bond, it felt as though his magic wasn't done and was drawing him to Nekko.
"Hmm... I like being fucked as much as I like fucking, and if you weren't aware, we produce our own slick. Sex between males is pretty much a given for us. I also don't need prep like dragons and shifters who have a human form. My antennae are very sensitive, and if you lick or stroke them, it can make me orgasm, same with my nipples. And similar to dragons, I produce something akin to milk. Breeders are responsible for caring for the male children, the queens only feed females."
"Whoah, cool." River grinned. Skye wondered if that's why Nekko's nipples were so large.
'I think we have a lot to learn about our new wing-mate,' Mistral said. 'Perhaps ask him about our mark. We may want it to be hidden given his position.'
"I don't know if my bite will be visible for you, Nekko. Better to be safe and assume it will-any place you'd like it more than another?" Skye asked and felt his stomach do a dip when he saw Nekko's expression.
"Oh, yes. I want it right next to my hole. That way, when my lovers are up close and personal, they'll know the Bloody Prince was there first." The pelurian looked absolutely gleeful, and River broke out laughing.
"He's got ya there, bro. And you know that'll just make our brothers even hotter for him."
"I'm pleased you both find me attractive. I can smell your arousal." Nekko lifted his nose and did an exaggerated inhale. "Ambrosia..."
River rolled his eyes and began to strip. "Dude, one of the things we forgot to mention. Don't freak if you get turned on by the other wing- mates. It goes with the deal, and odds are you'll always have a bed partner if you want one."
"You can't call him 'dude,' he's the captain and our boss." Skye emphasized "boss" as if his brother might not get it. Skye pulled a container of dragon lube out of his pocket and tossed it on the bed.
"I rather like it, and you better not be thinking of me as your captain when you're pumping your load into my ass. I'd rather just be Nekko, your very willing fuck buddy. And so we don't have misunderstandings, I want your cum inside me-as much as you can give me."
Skye blushed and River snorted. "Such a good fit for us. Your magic has more brains than you," River muttered.
"Jerk," Skye muttered right back. It was disconcerting how turned on he was by Nekko, and he couldn't help but wonder why he wanted them to cum inside him. Did it do something for him?
'Mistral, do you think pelurians put off pheromones like the lorikeans and nymphs?'
'No one mentioned it. I'd think that Venci wouldn't leave that part out if he knew.'
'True.' Skye folded his clothing and set it aside. When he turned, it was to find Nekko staring at him, his dark eyes intense.
"Can we agree now that when we're on board ship, we work out a way to repeat this often? The view alone..." Nekko sighed and pulled River to him so he could claim his mouth.
'Mistral, I gotta admit that's pretty hot.'
'Our brother is stunning, and so is our new conquest. Have you thought about what we're going to do to him? I think I would like to feel that impressive dick in our ass and then fill him with our seed. He seems to have a sense of smell sensitive enough that he'd be reminded we'd claimed him long after the deed was done.'
A wave of lust and heat flowed through Skye as Mistral offered up images. Skye stepped behind Nekko and pressed his body against the pelurian's warm flesh. He wrapped his arms around him and tracked the defined abs up to his pecs-even larger than Garrett's.
"Mmm. Can't wait to have your cocks inside me," Nekko said.
Skye wrapped his hand around Nekko's dick as the pelurian and River continued to kiss. The skin was warm and velvety but different from humans, tougher and more like buttery soft leather. His cock was more slender than Garrett's, but perhaps a little longer, with a mushroom head and no foreskin. Nekko was leaking pre-cum already.
"Lay on the bed." River pulled Skye to the side and pushed Nekko until he had no choice but to sit. "Head on that side and ass this way." River dropped to his knees and took Nekko's hard cock into his mouth.
"Ughhhhh."
Skye grinned as he moved to the other side of the narrow bed. He leaned down to kiss the pelurian, running his hands over his chest and squeezing his nipples. "You ready?"
"Past ready. Can I suck you?" Nekko tipped his head back over the edge of the bed, opening his mouth in invitation. Skye moved forward, letting the pelurian take his cock into the wet heat of his mouth.
Skye... River nudged mentally. Don't forget to shield. Not sure the newbies are ready for this much heat. River winked while still deepthroating Nekko.
Skye pulled up his magic and reinforced his shields, layering them so he didn't leak. He could still feel River and Nekko, but nothing "should" get out to the others. Skye used his magic to attune himself to their new wing brother and make sure he heard his thoughts. With how little he knew of the man and his species, Skye didn't want to take chances on doing something that wasn't welcomed.
Fuck, he wasn't kidding. His hole is already open and dripping. He also seems to have a prostate given his reaction to me finger fucking him and hitting that bump. River's mind voice had gotten much stronger and was clearer than any of his other bonds except Garrett.
He really likes what you're doing. I think his ass may be more sensitive than a human's, the pleasure is intense.
Awesome. River's satisfaction at making the pelurian feel good came through clearly.
'Are we going to see if we can overload our new green friend?' Mistral asked.
'Should we? I don't want to mess with his antennae until we know what feels good, but we could do the other stuff.'
Skye slid free of Nekko's mouth and climbed onto the bed beside him. He kissed the pelurian and cupped his face looking into the large dark eyes. "If there's something you want, tell us."
"I want everything." Nekko's voice came out as a rasp as his eyes tracked Skye.
"Well, I want to suck these; that okay with you?" Skye gripped both of Nekko's nipples and squeezed. The pelurian's back arched, and he let out a loud moan. "I'm taking that as a yes."
'No question, Mistral, these are the biggest nipples in the wing. And no milk leeches required.'
'Suck him harder. I want to taste him. And milk that other titty while you suck,' Mistral demanded.
Do it again, Skye! I got a mouthful of delicious pre-cum.
"Oh, oh, oh," Nekko moaned, and Skye got a squirt of pelurian milk from the nipple he was sucking. He savored it, deciding it was even better than dragon milk, creamy and nutty tasting.
Skye moved to the other tit and milked the one he'd just left with his fingers, pulling and stroking and grinning as the creamy liquid squirted onto his hand and Nekko's chest.
"I'm gonna cum!" Nekko cried.
That okay with you, River?
Hell, yeah. The sound of River sucking and slurping on the green cock in his mouth filled the room.
"Ahhhhhheeeeee." Nekko's hips lifted off the bed as he cried out. Skye was connected enough that he sensed the orgasm and sucked even harder until the pelurian was thrashing. River had his hips pinned and his nose buried against Nekko's groin as he sucked down his release.
Skye turned to look at River when he felt his brother tap his arm.
Share. River mentally sent and pulled Skye toward him. Their mouths crashed together, and River pushed part of Nekko's load into Skye's mouth with his tongue.
Sweet musky flavor burst across Skye's tongue as he licked up the jizz from River. Mm. That's good stuff.
Damn right. I knew how good it was and couldn't wait to get more. 'Course Kwill and Beck know it too, so we'll have to fight for our share.
Skye had a flashback to when he'd bonded Nekko of turning his back and hearing slurping sounds. He'd assumed Kwill and Beck had cleaned up Nekko's cum, but he hadn't known if River joined them.
'Guess he did,' Mistral snickered, but Skye also felt his dragon's approval.
Can you get him hard again? River asked.
If he works like dragons and shifters... Skye reached out with his telekinesis and was surprised to find similar plumbing. That was good since it meant he knew how to make sex better for the pelurian without guessing.
"Nice." River grinned as he stroked Nekko, his cock as hard as ever.
"How?" Nekko lifted his head to look at River playing with him.
"Don't worry, buddy. We got you. Lay back and enjoy." River stood and pushed Nekko's legs apart. "There it is...such a sweet hole."
Skye grabbed the lube he'd dropped on the bed earlier. "You need-"
"Nah, he's so horny he's got slick dripping out of his ass. You okay if I fuck him first?"
"Sure, that works." Skye opened the lube and used it on himself. He was looking forward to having Nekko inside him.
"Fuck." Nekko's eyes were wide as he stared at Skye fingering himself.
Skye swung his leg over the pelurian's torso, laying his hands on his chest for balance. River helped position Nekko so that Skye could ease back, taking him in.
"Ohhhhhhh." Nekko moaned as Skye mounted him at the same time as his brother slid his cock into Nekko's slick hole.
"We wing-mates know how to take care of each other." River ran his hands up Skye's back in encouragement. You got this, bro. Ride as long as you want, then it's my turn.
It took a few tries for Skye to get his muscles to relax and take Nekko's cock all the way inside him. When he felt his hips resting against the pelurian's, he let out a sigh and began to rock. Skye gripped each nipple between a thumb and forefinger and began squeezing them and milking Nekko as he rocked.
'Mm. He feels really good, Mistral.'
'He does, and I love seeing his titties squirt. Maybe lean forward and see what we can do with those ignored things on his head. Let's see if we get as much of a reaction from playing with them as we do his nipples.'
Skye braced his elbows on either side of Nekko's head and caressed his face, giving him a gentle kiss before he slid his fingers up the quivering antennae.
"Ughhhhhhhh." Nekko's cock drove up into Skye, and his body shuddered as Skye began stroking the long green tendrils with a gentle caress.
"You like that?" Skye continued to rock and added his telekinesis, taking over with the nipples he could no longer reach and adding to the sensations River was already giving Nekko's prostate.
"Fuck me harder...please..." Nekko cried out.
River obliged, gripping Skye's hips to steady himself. "You're going to love this ass, Skye. He's so tight."
"Soooo good," Nekko moaned.
Skye had to agree. The pelurian's large cock filled him and hit all the right spots.
"Gonna cum!" River was pounding Nekko hard enough that the sounds of slapping flesh filled the room.
"UGH!" Nekko thrust up, and it felt like someone had shoved a fire hose up Skye's ass. He could feel the heat and pressure of the pelurian's release filling him.
"Fuuuuuuuck." River lay his head on Skye's back and took a deep breath. "Your turn." After a few moments, River pulled away and moved to the other side of the bed where he offered his still dripping dick to Nekko.
Skye eased off of his wing-mate, very aware of the warm jizz dripping from his hole. He closed his eyes and concentrated, willing his ass to close. He wasn't as practiced using his powers on himself, and usually, his body would absorb his partner's spend, but there was too much.
"Mm. Is it always like this with you?" Nekko said around slurping River's cock.
"Sort of?" River shrugged-which looked really odd in context. "Skye tries to have another wing-mate with him when he bonds. Usually that's Garrett. Having another wing member makes it more intense."
"Guessing that an orgy with your wing would be mind-blowing?"
"Oh, brother, you have no fucking idea. Can't even be described; you'll just have to try it for yourself." River laughed as he pulled back and looked at Skye. From behind? Turn him with me on the bed?
Give me a second, but yeah, that sounds good. Skye found the lube where it had fallen to the floor and tossed it to River. He bit his lip at the depraved sounds Nekko made as he watched River get himself ready.
'Our magic doesn't make mistakes. He's going to blossom being in our wing. You felt his emotions-saw what was in his head. He needs us,' Mistral said.
'You're right, and I'm trying to get over my hangups. Be patient with me, please.'
River lay back on the bed and spread his legs. He didn't have to say a word before Nekko lifted his hips and buried his face in River's ass.
He's so shy, Skye teased.
River gave a strangled snort. And he's got a magic tongue. Fuck.
Climbing up behind Nekko, Skye gripped the firm round globes of the pelurian's ass. It was sculpture-worthy, and Skye thought it defined "bubble butt." While Nekko's upper body was as big as Garrett's, his hips were much narrower, exaggerating the curve and swell of his ass.
Skye ran his finger over Nekko's hole, eliciting a groan and assuring Skye the man didn't need any prep. He was still slick and dripping from River's load. He positioned himself and carefully pressed into Nekko's wet heat.
"Oh, wow," Skye moaned.
"Told you he had a great ass. Now, come on big green, get that dick inside me. You've played long enough, and I want fucked." River's tone made Skye smile. He sometimes envied his brother's directness and ability to ask for exactly what he wanted.
'River is right, Mistral. He's so tight and slick, and damn, he's got ridges in his channel.'
Ribbed for your pleasure! River mentally laughed and then let out an audible groan as Nekko pushed inside him.
'Mistral, remind me to talk to Beck about River's shielding and mental control.'
Nah, nah. It's good, bro. Being in your head is like watching a comedy... of horrors. River burst out laughing.
"Sorry, Nekko. Not laughing at you, honest."
Don't think now is the appropriate time for jokes, River.
Chill, bro, and enjoy that amazing ass. You know you want to.
Skye gripped Nekko's narrow waist and thrust, pushing the pelurian deeper into River.
"Harder, bro. We can take it."
Mistral pushed to the front of Skye's mind and shared the experience, prodding Skye to fuck harder and faster. They were still in Nekko's head and knew he was loving it. If anything, he wanted it rougher.
I'm not going to last, River. Can I borrow your magic?
Me either. That dick is going to push me over the edge any second. Fuck. Take it!
Skye drew on River's magic and intertwined it with his own. River's magic always responded well to Skye as if it knew they shared a deeper connection. It hummed as he built up the power that he'd shortly push into Nekko.
"Now!" River shouted, and Skye sensed his brother's orgasm.
He pushed his magic into Nekko, and the pelurian's ass tightened and throbbed around him, bringing Skye over the edge. He came hard and slammed as deep into Nekko as he could, letting his seed and his magic fill their wing brother.
Nekko cried out, and his entire body shuddered with his release. He didn't glow like River was but Skye knew the pelurian was still lost in the euphoria of a multiple orgasm. When Skye was sure his balls were empty, he pulled out and lowered himself, licking at the well-fucked hole before he held Nekko still and bit the tender flesh between his balls and hole.
"FUUUUCK!" Nekko screamed, and Skye felt Nekko's body pumping more seed into River. He lapped at the bite and saw that it had already healed, leaving a perfectly shaped platinum dragon scale.
'Guess it's good we assumed my mark would show.'
'He will be very happy and wear it as a badge of honor,' Mistral said with pride.
Skye rolled his eyes but knew his dragon was right. He sat back to catch his breath. Neither Nekko nor River were moving.
'River looks angelic when he glows like this,' Mistral observed.
Skye laughed. 'Oh, please. River is about as far from angelic as you can get. More like a little devil.'
Mm... but I'm your devil, bro. Someone's gotta get you to loosen up. Fuck that was awesome. Though...I feel like I've got a gallon of spooge in my gut. Wonder if I'll slosh when I move.
I think we'll all need showers before we leave. I'm covered in jizz and pelurian milk. And I sure don't want anyone reporting this back to Pater.
River snorted. When he wakes up and moves, you mean. Pretty sure he passed out.
"I'll help," Skye said out loud as he went to the bathroom to grab a towel.
"I'm going back to our room after this and pinning Nik to the bed so I can ride him 'til his balls are empty. I'm already open and slick. He won't know what hit him." River's voice was filled with glee.
'You think Garrett would be up for that, Mistral?'
Mistral snorted. 'After he's done shoving his tongue in our dragon hole.'
Skye felt a presence and carefully opened his shields. Kwill?
Waiting in the hall. Take your time. I'll stay with Nekko and make sure he's well. You and River can return to your mates.
You can come in. I'll let the guards know. Skye picked up on Kwill's thoughts; it just took him a moment to process. He might still have been on his own post-orgasm high. Kwill! Really?
Can't let it go to waste. I promise he'll enjoy it very much.
Skye sighed, and River gave him a questioning look.
"Kwill's here for clean-up duty. Said we can leave, and he'll take care of Nekko."
"Ha! I'll bet he will. Little perv," River muttered as he began pulling on his clothes.
- Scene 4 *
Skye shuffled uncomfortably from foot to foot. Yes, he was nervous, but more than anything, he swore he could still feel the prior night's activities. He didn't think his mate had ever gotten his tongue that deep inside him before, and then the number of times he buried his cock... Skye shuddered.
"Are you okay, son?" Prince Argos asked.
'Wait. Mistral, is it just me, or does Pater look like he's smirking?'
'Likely just your imagination.'
"Yeah, just nervous." Skye glanced again to the other corner of Prince Argos's office where he "knew" Seetal, the master chameleon spy, hid. He couldn't see him, but he could feel him in his mind. He still wondered why he could sense them when the psions could not.
"You'll do fine. Don't worry about what you find, just let me know, and I'll deal with it. And remember, it is fine if you wish to mind-speak me." Prince Argos pulled up a data screen, then opened a decorative box on his desk and took out a large crystal and set it out. It gave off a faint green glow.
Skye didn't doubt that he could do what Prince Argos asked, but he was afraid of what he might find. He noticed Boch Nee giving him a curious look. He hadn't expected the Speaker of the Assembly to join them. Now they waited for Ambassador Rahl and Tennat to join.
'What we find is not our problem. If the ambassador or Tennat have betrayed Kwill and Beck, they deserve whatever they get.' Mistral's mental tone was cold.
A knock sounded at the door, and one of the guards announced the ambassador and Tennat's arrival. What surprised Skye was that four guards entered with them and took positions against the wall.
"Your majesty." Tennat and Ambassador Rahl both bowed. It took them a moment to notice Skye and Boch Nee.
"Prince Skye, Speaker." Rahl gave another bow to Skye before they took the seats indicated in front of the prince's desk.
Skye expected to feel a reaction from the ambassador, perhaps curiosity at least, but got nothing. He could feel that Tennat was surprised and unsure of his presence, and most definitely speaker Boch Nee's, but he did not seem upset or worried.
'With our shields down, we should be able to at least pick up surface thoughts or emotions.' Mistral was concerned.
'He can't be that good at shielding. Maybe we should look a little harder.' Skye concentrated and opened up his magic sight as well. He knew from dealing with Balem, the rogue who'd kidnapped Rilian, that even a powerful psion could not keep him out.
'Magic.' Mistral's comment brought Skye's attention to the odd glow that surrounded Ambassador Rahl.
'I can't get past it. It's like he's inside a steel fortress-with force fields.'
'You and your movies. Yes, he is protected. Look for the source.'
Skye used one of the simple spells Master Mage Quanta had recently taught him and found the source of the magic-an amulet hidden under Rahl's waistcoat.
"You wished to speak with us, Your Majesty?" Rahl asked.
"Yes. I thought we should follow up on the incident on Telerune. The Council's attempt is quite concerning and affects the empire's security. While our delegation is still working things out with the 'new' Council, I have to wonder if there might be any sympathizers remaining on Draga. What are your thoughts?" Prince Argos glanced at the crystal on his desk that was now glowing red and then to Skye for just a moment, but it was enough for him to get the message.
Ambassador Rahl is wearing a magical talisman that blocks his thoughts and keeps me out. I don't think that can be accidental, Skye sent.
Where is it? Argos asked.
On a chain around his neck. It is hidden under his clothing.
Is it dangerous for someone else to touch? Could we have a guard remove it?
Skye closed his eyes for a moment and tried to look at the magic more closely. It should be safe to touch, but I don't think he'll let go of it willingly.
"Gentlemen, are either of you using magic?" The question seemed innocent, but the steel in Prince Argos's voice said otherwise.
"Of course not, Your Majesty. I know such things are forbidden without your prior consent," Tennat said, and Skye noted he was both speaking the truth and not worried.
Argos's gaze turned to the ambassador.
"Not me, Your Majesty." Rahl's voice was calm.
"You insult me." Prince Argos reached out and tapped the crystal. "I have evidence to the contrary. Zexes. If you would please assist and remove the amulet that Ambassador Rahl has around his neck." Argos looked at Skye. Can you please protect Zexes from any mental attacks? I do not trust Rahl.
Yes, Pater. Skye pulled his magic and wrapped several layers around the blond guard. He was confident it would protect him from any telepathic or magical attacks.
"I object! You cannot do this. I have diplomatic immunity, and I'm not subject-"
"Silence! Your status as an ambassador does not exempt you from security protocols when dealing with the royal family. Zexes, continue." Prince Argos's eyes were glowing red with his anger.
"You can't..." Rahl objected again, and Skye saw the look of horror and resignation when his attempts to get into Zexes's mind failed. Zexes used his blade to break the clasp and lifted the amulet without touching it to his skin. Skye was impressed.
As the amulet was removed from the room, Skye felt a wave of relief. He hadn't realized it was making him edgy. Now, he could easily dive into Rahl's mind. Obviously, the psion was doing his very best to put up the strongest shields he could manage. To Skye, they were nothing more than gossamer, easily parted without thought.
"Let me repeat the question." Argos gave a stern look to Rahl and Tennat in turn. "Are either of you aware of anyone who assisted in the attack on Kwill and Beck or the Council's plan to replace them?" He sat back and waited patiently while Skye did his thing, and the two psions squirmed.
Skye got strong emotions and thoughts from both men. It took him a moment to isolate them and dig into who was thinking and feeling what. Pater?
Go ahead, Skye. What have you found?
Tennat is feeling afraid and very guilty. Let me say first that he did not knowingly or intentionally do anything to betray Kwill, Beck, or the empire. However, he realizes he was used and tricked into providing information to Rahl that he should not have. He wants to tell you, but he's not sure how since he doesn't have clear evidence against the ambassador, only speculation.
And Rahl? Prince Argos's mind voice was incredibly calm given the circumstances.
He was working directly with the former Council and manipulated Tennat. He had full knowledge of their plans. He is also still working with a remnant on Telerune who are plotting against the Empire. He...um...was not aware of my abilities and considers himself safe. He believes he is stronger than Kwill or Beck and can resist any mind probes.
"No, Your Majesty, I assure you that all of the psions on Draga are completely loyal to the empire and would never work against your interests," the ambassador said.
Prince Argos smiled, and the effect was chilling. "Ambassador Rahl, I don't believe you. Are you ready and willing for the consequences if I can prove otherwise?"
"I have nothing to hide, Your Majesty."
"Seetal?" Prince Argos called.
"Your Majesty." The chameleon, Prince Argos's master spy, stepped out of the shadows and stood by the desk. He turned his gaze on the two psions. "The ambassador is lying."
"And Tennat?" Prince Argos asked.
"Guilty of being too trusting of the ambassador, but he is otherwise innocent," Seetal stated in a flat tone.
"I object. It is against our accords to have...one of them..." Rahl waved a hand at Seetal. "In the presence of a psion without our knowledge and permission."
"That is a Telerunian rule, not one recognized within the empire. Else, how would we have checks and balances on a telepathic race who loves deception?"
"You can't. I'm an ambassador of Telerune and not subject to your whims." The anxiety and fear were leaking into Rahl's voice.
Prince Argos rolled his eyes and sighed. "Ambassador Rahl, did you read the treaty your people signed with the empire to gain your favored status? I think not, or you'd know that almost every argument and claim you've used has no backing."
"Speaker, you've been remarkably quiet. Do you have any questions for the ambassador before I proceed?" Prince Argos asked.
Boch Nee stepped closer and looked directly at Ambassador Rahl. "It doesn't take a telepath to recognize deceit and treachery. Speaking for the Assembly, I recommend that the ambassador be restrained with due caution and investigated. Prince Skye." Boch Nee turned to look at Skye. "May I assume you've already done a truth-seeking?"
"I have, sir."
"What? He's not a psion! His piddling telepathy can't be considered as evidence," Ambassador Rahl objected.
Skye saw Tennat squirming; maybe he had more spine than Skye thought because it seemed that he hadn't shared the depth of Skye's abilities with Rahl. And even then, Tennat only knew a small part of what Skye could do.
"You must be misinformed, Ambassador. Skye has already been acknowledged by the full Assembly as a truth seeker, and his testimony is admissible. Have you slept through all the Assembly meetings?" Prince Argos's smile was disconcerting to him, he wondered what it was doing to the ambassador.
"I demand council." Rahl had the audacity to sit back, cross his arms and glare at the prince.
"Of course. And we'll make sure they are present for your full truth- seeking and subsequent trial for treason. Do you have anything else to say?" Argos tapped his fingers on his desk
"I'll review my report with you, Prince Argos, before submitting it to the Assembly. May I ask what Prince Skye discovered?"
"I object!" Rahl said.
At Argos's nod, Skye explained. "As you saw, the ambassador was using a magic shield at first. Once removed, I was able to read him. He had full knowledge of the intent to capture and replace Kwill and Beck. He was working directly with the former council. He is still working with several senior psions on Telerune as well as several sympathizers on Draga. I can provide names when it's appropriate. There are a number of other actions that I think would count as treasonous, but I'm still learning all the laws, so would need someone else's guidance."
"Master Seetal, do you agree with Prince Skye? I know your skills are different, but perhaps there is some overlap?" Boch Nee asked.
"Prince Skye speaks the truth, and while I don't have that level of detail, I agree that the ambassador is a security risk." Seetal had an emotionless monotone in his delivery that made Skye somewhat uncomfortable.
"I've heard enough, Prince Argos. I support the charge of treason," Boch Nee said.
"Thank you, Speaker. Guards, please secure Ambassador Rahl."
"No!" Ambassador Rahl stood and lashed out with his mind. Fortunately, Skye was already expecting it and had wrapped his shields around him like he'd done with the rogue psions in Caris. How sad that he had the experience to handle this.
"I'm impressed, Prince Skye." Seetal bowed when he smiled at Skye. "You and I should have a conversation. I think we may have future opportunities."
'Well, shit, that does not sound good.'
'He's rather intimidating, but Prince Argos trusts him and must think well of him, or he wouldn't be here,' Mistral said.
All four of the Imperial Guard approached the ambassador, and one of them had a collar that they placed on him while the others watched. When it was secured, it hummed, and small blue lights illuminated. Skye immediately felt the dampening field, not too dissimilar to the amulet's effects from earlier, but this time it kept Rahl's thoughts in rather than others out.
"He's secure, Your Majesty," Zexes said.
"You know what to do. Speaker, thank you for being here on such short notice."
"Always a pleasure, Prince Argos." Boch Nee bowed and followed the guards who escorted the ambassador out of the office.
Seetal hadn't moved but turned and gave a scrutinizing look to Tennat. "Perhaps be careful of who you trust in the future."
Tennat nodded but didn't speak. Skye could feel the psion was terrified.
Prince Argos sighed. "Tennat, I'm afraid you'll have to endure a truth- seeking as well. I am glad you were loyal, but others will not trust you unless we clearly prove your innocence."
"I understand, Your Majesty. I swear I had no idea what he was doing..."
"As Seetal advised, it is safest to trust no one. Skye, I know this is awkward, but would you be willing to partner with Leku for the truth- seeking? Since we are in essence investigating crimes against Kwill and Beck, it is not appropriate for them to be involved."
Skye took a moment. 'Shit, shit, shit. Mistral, that psion terrifies me.'
'We can do it. We are stronger than Leku, and perhaps it will help us build a rapport with him.'
"I will do whatever you need, Pater. I assume you'll tell me when this needs to happen."
"It will be several days at least. I expect the Assembly will want to discuss and determine appropriate recourse. Telerune is already on probation, so this will not help them, but it may give us additional leverage. I expect Boch Nee will want those names sooner rather than later. I'll let you know when it is time for the truth-seeking. Thank you, Skye. I know this was awkward and not pleasant for you. Try to rest on your trip to the preserve. Have you chosen who will go with you?"
"Other than River, I left that up to Mica. Several of the guards are required at the Academy, so it will take some juggling."
"You'll do well, son. Good luck."
Argos extended his arms, and Skye stepped in for a hug, surprised that his pater would show affection in front of Seetal.
- Scene 5 *
"You'll figure it out. I have confidence in you." Emperor Darius gave Skye a reassuring smile. He was seated across from Skye in the Royal Transport, a much nicer means of transportation than the military transports Skye had experienced. The interior was elegant, and the chairs were more like large recliners.
"I think the cryptic message they received from Keeper is what has me worried."
Darius laughed. "You haven't decided to trust Underhill and its mysterious mouthpiece? You 'have' made a bargain."
Skye grimaced. "Yes and no. I'm more worried about the 'fine print' that may or may not have been visible. While Underhill has come through for us up to this point, I'm not deluding myself that it will always work that way."
"I've found that a measure of skepticism will serve you well in all negotiations. Thank you again for your help with the psion ambassador. Unfortunate but sadly not surprising. Given the nature of the crimes, the Imperial Guard was tasked with bringing in the others. All of them were found and secured before we took off."
"What will you do about the psions on Telerune working against the empire?"
Darius smiled. "My resourceful, talented mate has that well in hand. As River would say, 'he has people for that.'"
"What did I do?" River asked from behind Skye. He was seated with Corbin, Feired, and Braden. It turned out that due to Corbin's time in the military, he needed very little additional training for his role on the Temero. Feired tested out of much of the food service training, already a better chef with more knowledge and skills than the 'chef' he'd be reporting to.
"Nothing, Father was using one of your expressions," Skye called over his shoulder.
"That's because I'm the cool one."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Skye grinned at Darius, who seemed to find their banter amusing. "I heard about the protests; are you expecting trouble?"
"We are preparing for trouble, but the area is remote enough, we'll have plenty of warning if they try. The preserve does not have any tube lines or highways, and air traffic is restricted; nothing for you to worry about."
"Are they causing problems for the dark fae? They already felt persecuted by the Court of Light. I can't imagine this helps?" Skye felt bad that they had another obstacle to moving forward.
"They are handling it well. They seem to be jaded enough to expect problems." Darius paused. "Even more interesting is the dark fae don't seem to consider the dragi a threat-even with their modern weapons."
"Which I expect riles up the dragi even more."
Darius gave a "what can you do?" shrug.
"Is the resettlement going well so far?"
"Very well. Administering the implants with inoculation went smoother than we ever hoped, and those who agreed to the bio-coms appear to be very pleased. It wasn't a very high bar, but all of those who've been resettled so far have nothing but good to say about Draga."
"I'm glad. After being banished to Hell World, they deserve a break. I know we can't expect them to reconcile with the other elves right away, but maybe over time..."
"Actions speak louder than words, though I think we have a better chance since they now fall under the empire and have equal rights."
"Since the same happened with the shifters, are there any groups remaining who are 'independent' of imperial law?" Skye asked.
"Not who reside on the core worlds. The human colonies and a few other planets are still considered protectorates and are allowed to operate independently-being ignorant of the existence of the Empire and the other races." Darius turned when Taleel approached.
"Your Majesty." Taleel knelt and bowed.
"General Del Nuit."
"Do you have a preference on which four of the Imperial Guards go with the princes?" Taleel asked.
"No, you work that out with the captain. I trust your judgment. We expect to rejoin you at the centaur village by the end of the day. They are preparing accommodations should we need to stay the night-which I expect to be the case." Darius spoke to Taleel in a tone he'd come to associate with how the emperor spoke with his sons, not the voice and manner he used with outsiders. Taleel returned to his seat.
'Garrett said he treated Taleel like another son,' Mistral reminded Skye.
'True. He hasn't been around enough for me to notice, and while he was with us when we first came to Draga I might have been distracted by other things.'
Emperor Darius had turned his focus to his data pad, where Skye assumed he was dealing with "emperor stuff." Skye looked out the side port and watched as the landscape zipped by below them. He looked around the cabin and caught Taleel watching him.
Skye grinned, and Taleel gave him a bright smile in return. He was more than surprised to find Taleel going on the adventure with him. His black dragon had explained that he was currently on leave and had no pressing business. With so many of his guards tied up at the Academy, he was glad to play protector for the mission.
"Approaching the landing site. Please fasten in," a voice said over the intercom.
The touchdown was barely perceptible, and then there was a flurry of activity as Skye, his wing-mates, and four guards exited onto the grassy meadow with their duffel bags. As soon as they were clear, the shuttle took off.
"I feel kind of like we were just dumped off," River grumbled.
"We were. The emperor's shuttle never remains stationary long due to security risks. Don't take it personally." Taleel gripped River's shoulder.
"Um...now what?" Skye didn't see any signs of others coming to welcome them or even a path to know which way to go.
"We've notified the centaur chief, Roan, of our arrival. They should be here shortly," one of the guards said.
A low hum let Skye know someone or something was approaching. A few moments later, two floating platforms appeared on the horizon, each operated by a centaur.
"That's never going to get boring." River bumped Skye's shoulder.
"Seeing centaurs or floating air cars?"
"Both. And put them together... What the fuck are those things? Air wagons?" River snickered.
Skye took a moment as they drew nearer to formulate an answer. "I think that's as good a description as any. Not quite a platform since it has sides."
The two craft stopped about twenty feet away from the group. The centaur driving the craft in front stepped out and joined them.
"Prince Skye, Prince River, I have no difficulty in recognizing you. I am Edwin Roan, Chief of our centaur herd, but please call me Edwin. Now, if you'd introduce me to the rest of your group?"
"Pleased to meet you. My assistant Braden Thomas, my wing-mates, Taleel Del Nuit, Quinn Corbin, and Feired Fornay. I'm afraid my guards prefer not to be introduced." Skye wasn't sure why they always insisted on being anonymous, but he really didn't want another lecture.
"Welcome. I'll ask you to divide into two groups and select the air car of your preference. It will only take a few minutes to get to town."
'Well, now you know. They're called air cars,' Mistral teased as the guards divided them up; Skye, Taleel, Corbin, and two guards in one car and River, Braden, Feired, and two guards in the other.
Skye's first thought as they crossed the meadow and entered the forest was that there were no roads, but he revised that as he realized they followed a clear wide path-it just wasn't paved. He was even more surprised when they cleared the trees and a modern town was revealed in front of them. Skye wasn't sure what he'd expected, but it wasn't this. The buildings all looked oddly proportioned but otherwise typical of what he'd seen on Draga.
"If you don't mind, Prince Skye, we'll be going directly to the clinic. I'd love to impress you with a formal welcome, but needs must," Chief Roan said. Skye noted that the man...er centaur's name fit his coloring, a blend of white and brown across his flank and body with brown legs and tail. His hair and eyes were also a deep brown. He wore a nice but simple shirt and waistcoat on his human half.
"Certainly. We don't have an agenda," Skye said, enjoying the scents and the feel of the wind on his face.
Similar to their approach, the town's streets were grassy green alleyways. Skye recognized the clinic before they reached it. It looked similar to the ones that were dotted throughout Capital City.
Skye was so busy looking around that he stumbled when he stepped off the platform. Taleel caught him and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. Pay attention, Skye. Wouldn't do for you to get hurt when we've barely arrived. Taleel's mental voice teased Skye but also held warmth and affection that Skye missed.
You need to be around more, Taleel. I've missed you.
Same, buddy. Now pay attention, and let's do this...whatever we're here to do.
They followed the chief into the clinic. Skye quickly noted the differences, higher ceilings, wider hallways, and larger doors. Also, the flooring looked different.
"Prince Skye, may I introduce Tiessa Fries, she is our senior medic," Edwin said. "His brother, Prince River, and the rest can introduce themselves as needs and time permits.
Skye bowed his head. "Pleased to meet you." The medic was a dark chestnut with light brown hair down to her shoulders and honey-gold eyes. Her human part was clothed in a simple shirt with a white medic's jacket over the top.
"Tiessa." She gave him a curious look, then sighed. "I really hoped you'd be ugly. The gods can be so cruel." She paused and took a deep breath. "My apologies for being direct and short. The situation is not good. I've been overseeing Caladwen's care since her arrival. Unfortunately, we're at a point that my medical training and all the technology in the empire is not adequate to resolve her case."
Skye was still stuck on why she wanted him to be ugly. 'Mistral, did we miss something?'
'I don't believe so. Perhaps follow along and she'll explain later?'
"Does your entire entourage need to stay with you?" Tiessa raised an eyebrow, her opinion clear.
"No. Is it possible for River to stay with me? The others can stay outside, though a couple may need to be nearby, perhaps the hallway?"
Tiessa looked over the group. "That works. Not sure that we've ever had a royal in town before. Sorry, if we don't know the protocols."
"The princes are required to have guards nearby at all times. A few of us are wing-mates and are here for moral support," Taleel said.
Tiessa turned to Taleel and gave him a look up and down. "Hm...I somehow expect that a few of you might be even more dangerous than the guards."
River snickered. "She's got you there, big guy."
"You're not wrong. Corbin and Feired are also Imperial Guards, Taleel is in Protectorate Patrol, and Braden is my assistant but also combat trained." Skye gestured to each in turn.
"Are you expecting trouble?" Tiessa asked.
"Overprotective parents," River said into his hand, but it was loud enough for everyone to hear, and fortunately, the chief and Tiessa laughed.
"Why don't we start with you seeing the problem for yourself." Tiessa smiled and held up a hand. "Whoever needs to stick close, follow me."
"I'll be here when you are finished," Edwin said.
They followed the medic through a couple of corridors, passing other clinic staff on their way. Tiessa stopped and turned to the group. "Anyone who will be going into the room with Caladwen needs to wash and suit up."
Skye and River followed her into a room, and each washed their hands and put on the caps, masks, and gloves Tiessa handed them. Once finished, she took them back into the hallway and gestured to one of the oversized doors. "Let me set expectations. Caladwen is being held in a magical stasis. So don't be concerned about how still she seems."
Skye felt the magic before she opened the door. It was a thrum in the air that vibrated along his skin. He turned when River poked him, a look of question in his eyes.
Is that the magic?
If you mean the tingly hum, yes, Skye answered. Perhaps open your magic sight when we go in. It might help you and your dragon to know where the sensation originates.
The room was much larger than the recovery room he'd been in just the day before. Even the "bed" was huge, it dwarfed the former elf queen. Skye bit his lip to hold back his gasp.
"Holy fuck." River was not so inhibited.
Caladwen's face was still recognizable though she didn't look "good." Her body...
"How is that even possible?" River whispered.
"Magic." Tiessa sounded tired.
"The baby isn't near to being due yet, right?" Skye asked staring at the grotesquely deformed former queen. Her belly was large enough Skye couldn't imagine that she was even able to stand or walk without help.
"No. That's part of our concern. While the child is growing as expected and is where a centaur foal should be for this many months, I'm not sure the elf can bring her to term. It is a girl by the way."
Skye's heart sank. It wasn't the child's fault, and if he was honest with himself, he created this situation. "How can we help?"
"I can't do anything more for her here. I have healing magic, but not enough to fix this. From every account we've been able to find, prior foals born of non-centaurs have always happened within Underhill-or at least those that didn't end in death for both." Tiessa looked angry and perhaps frustrated.
"So we need to get her to Underhill. What else?" River approached the bed and looked more closely, his hand gently prodding at the magical green sphere that surrounded the former queen.
Tiessa turned to Skye and gave him a long, serious look. "Caladwen is not well, mentally. I don't believe she'll be able to care for the foal. I'm honestly not sure she'll be capable of caring for herself. I don't know all the history, but something is not right. It's almost as though she's in a different reality and hearing voices that aren't there."
"May I take a look?" Skye asked to which Tiessa nodded and waved to the patient.
'What do you think, Mistral? I don't see how it is even possible.'
'We can check her for ourselves. Our magic and mind powers should not interfere with the stasis spell.'
Skye moved beside River. "Take my hand and I can show you."
River turned with a surprised look but nodded and accepted Skye's offer. What do I need to do?
Open your magic sight and keep your shields down. It works somewhat like telepathy but I'll be sharing what I see as well. Skye took a cleansing breath and drew on his magic before letting his telekinetic powers focus on the former elf queen.
Trippy.
Let's tackle the obvious first. The foal has an extremely strong aura and...I'd guess magic signature? I can feel it humming...and I hear a faint but beautiful melody. Can you?
Yes. Something else, the foal's aura and 'feel' reminds me of Master Mage Quanta, River said.
I'm not an expert on centaurs, but everything looks and feels right. Now, for the queen.
Ew... River turned away, and Skye gave him a moment.
Not good. Skye ignored the magic for a moment and checked her health. Elves were part of his training and weren't too dissimilar from humans. He was relieved that other than the sheer size of the foal, everything looked right. Physically, she is doing well. I thought the stasis 'froze' them in time but it appears it slowed them. They are still functioning but at a ridiculously slow pace. I'm guessing you reacted to her aura and the scars from having her magic removed?
**It's broken, fractured, messed up, I don't know...it just feels wrong. I can see where her powers were, and the vague hum is discordant and painful. I'm surprised if they stripped her of her powers, there's any hum left."
She is still fae and, by nature, 'is' magic. I think the fractured aura is a window into her mind and soul. I don't know that they ever determined what caused her decline. They may not have bothered to look. Skye wondered if it was too late for that and if the elf was beyond help.
You think she may have been spelled or cursed? River asked.
I don't know, and I'm not sure if we ever will. But I agree with Tiessa, she's not fit to be a mother.
Before I puke, can we be done? River looked a little pale, and Skye didn't think there was much more he could find. He closed his magical sight and withdrew his magic.
"I'm going to guess that you were doing something. I could feel the magic. Are you a healer?" Tiessa asked.
"I have magic and telekinetic abilities that can help, but I don't have a healer's gift. I was able to confirm what you've already told us. I'll admit that I'm out of my depth right now. I don't know why you think I can fix this or have the answers," Skye said.
"Oh, I get it. I said something similar when they told me it was my job to care for her."
Tiessa turned and signaled them to follow her out of the room. "Like you, the Seer dumped this in my lap. So the why is because the one with magic visions said you had the answers. Just like she said I "had" to be the one to care for Caladwen."
"Okay, that's kind of creepy," River said.
"Tell me. I hoped to never meet the human my mate tried to breed while being held captive. And yet, here you are."
"Dragon now," River muttered and then looked guilty when Skye glared at him.
"God, I am so very sorry. I had-"
"No choice, no control, drugged and forced? Oh, I know, and my mate still has nightmares of what those slavers did to him. If they weren't already dead, I'd track them down and kill them myself." The heat and anger were clear in Tiessa's tone. "But here we are. Let's get you and your people settled and then we can discuss this. The stasis will hold Caladwen and the foal for now. We have some time and perhaps solutions will come to us?"
"We can hope. Do you know who spoke with Keeper? I was told he was consulted." Skye pulled off the gloves and hat once they were out of the room.
"Edwin went to Underhill for help. He can tell you more. We'll talk over dinner and I'll make sure we have alcohol. I think we all might need it," Tiessa said.
