Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 56: Story Time by Tripp Savidge

Keeper turned and waved his hands over the mosaic mural on the wall of the antechamber. As they watched, it blurred and reformed, showing a perfect replica of the garden with the torii gate at the center. The gate began to glow, and the image in the center changed.

"Well, it's dark," River said.

"As you requested, on Draga, it is the middle of the night." Keeper stepped out of the way and gestured to the gate.

"Here goes," Skye was about to step forward when Mica's arm shot out and stopped him. He glared and cleared his throat.

"Right. After you." Skye tried not to sound grumpy.

Mica was the first to step through, then Garrett and Skye, followed by Venci with River and Nik bringing up the rear.

Skye stumbled onto the bridge when he passed through the portal. Loud klaxon alarms filled the night, and bright searchlights blinded him from various points on the palace walls.

"So much for a stealth entrance," River said from behind him.

  • Scene 1 *

Skye put his hands over his ears to block the screaming of the alarms. He was just about to move forward when his mind was hit with waves of emotions and thoughts that forced him to his hands and knees. He couldn't think, he was barely able to breathe. He knew he was sobbing, overcome by fear, joy, relief, so many feelings. The thoughts and words were a jumbled mess. There were so many battling for his attention he couldn't separate them.

SHIELD! The command hit him like a sledgehammer. He tried to steady his breathing and build his shields layer by layer. Slowly but steadily, the tide of noise receded. Now that he could think, he realized that he and Mistral knew that voice.

'Kwill is back,' Mistral's whisper sounded strained as if he too, had been thrown by the onslaught.

Hands were rubbing Skye's back. Someone was beside him speaking.

"...come on, baby. You can do this. Block everyone out until you get control."

Garrett. That's Garrett. Skye opened his eyes. The alarms had gone silent, and the searchlights were dark again. River was lying on the bridge beside him, Nik holding his head in his lap.

"What happened?" Skye tried to sit up and then thought better of it.

"Keeping your shields down so you knew if there was a threat backfired. Kwill said you were overcome when all the bonds flared, waking up our wing-mates. As soon as they felt you, they all reached out to you at once. He also thought your gift might have gotten stronger."

"Kwill? So we didn't imagine it."

"He's back. He alerted Father and Colonel Devroe right away so they could make sure we weren't met by a battalion of armed guards. I guess they had more defenses than we expected," Garrett said.

"Might be an understatement." Skye rubbed his temples but was feeling better. Garrett helped him to his feet, and he saw Nik was doing the same for River.

"You okay, Bro?" Skye asked.

"Wow. What a fucking head punch. That sure never happened before."

"You shielding everyone out?"

"Yeah, thanks for telling me. I couldn't think," River said, giving a weak smile.

"Wasn't me. Kwill is the one who shouted in my head. Probably him or Beck."

"Come on, we need to get moving. I'm sure the alarms woke people up, and we don't want them to look out and see us," Mica said.

"Well after that, they certainly know someone is here." River dusted off his knees.

"Kwill's on top of it. They're telling people it was a false alarm. Devroe is clearing a path for us back to the family wing. We're supposed to go in through the door near the Chapel and take the servants' stairs. Someone will be waiting for us."

"Garrett, how do you know all this?" Skye asked.

"Kwill. He's been in my head since he told you to shield." Garrett looked around and nodded to Mica, who took the lead in guiding them.

"Is he okay?" Skye asked.

Garrett was quiet a moment. "He didn't say, and I didn't think to ask. We were focused on the not getting killed part. Kwill did say he'd let the wing know, and I told him everyone was safe but that they weren't all with us."

"Good." Skye hoped he'd be able to let his shields down enough to at least talk with Kwill and his wing-mates once he adjusted to being back.

Colonel Devroe himself met them near the chapel. Always a man of few words, the head of the Imperial Guard gave them all a quick once over before scowling. At least his body language said he was relieved even if he didn't say anything.

"Follow me."

Skye felt strange sneaking through the palace. The lighting was turned low for the night, and the halls were more deserted than he'd ever seen them. Usually there were at least a few servants. He'd never been in the back stairways but knew that Dillon often used them to get around when running errands for them.

They reached the family wing without seeing anyone other than Devroe. They walked in silence, not even whispering to each other. Skye wasn't sure where they were being led, but he hadn't expected it to be the Emperor's private chambers. They stopped outside the double doors, carved and decorated with gold leaf. Two Imperial Guards stood outside.

No one said a word as they opened the door and directed their odd group inside. Skye noticed Mica reach out and clasp arms with one of the guards, and the man squeezed Mica's shoulder as they passed. 'Must be someone he knew from when he served Father.'

'Or an old fuck-buddy,' Mistral offered helpfully.

Skye rolled his eyes, but his attention was drawn to the men waiting in the small study. Garrett rushed forward into his father's arms, and Nik went to Pater. Given the hugs and how long they held each other, Skye didn't need to read them to feel the love. There were tears and sniffles, and the brothers swapped parents.

Skye and River stood back waiting with Venci and Mica at their backs.

"Well? Don't just stand there!" Prince Argos said, holding out his arms after he released Garrett.

River nudged Skye to go first, and Skye had barely moved before Darius grabbed River.

Skye stepped into Prince Argos's arms and let out an oof as Pater hugged him so hard the air was forced from his lungs. Even shielding, Skye was soon crying from what he picked up from Pater. He let himself wallow in the love and strong arms that clung to him.

"Don't you ever scare me like that again," Argos said in a low voice.

Skye wanted to point out that he had no choice but figured that would come out later. He hugged back, taking all the comfort he could get. Argos kissed his brow and then held him at arm's length, looking him up and down. An eyebrow rose, and Skye saw a sparkle in Pater's eye. That's when he remembered they were wearing the leathers Underhill had provided.

"Hm. It's a different look for you."

Skye felt the heat rush to his face, realizing they looked like cover models for some leather porn.

"Underhill picked the wardrobe, not us. Look at Venci, not a stitch of color," Garrett pointed out.

Prince Argos gave a small laugh and leaned back into Skye and whispered. "You look good."

Skye reluctantly stepped back and fisted his eyes, trying not to let anyone know he'd been crying.

"We hope you don't mind. We didn't wake your grandparents. It might have drawn more attention, and we thought it best to speak with you first. Please, sit. Someone is bringing refreshments," Darius said.

The study in the Emperor's chambers was a separate room and much larger than the seating area in Sky and Garrett's suite. It was cozy rather than formal. Darius and Argos sat on one couch and directed Garrett and Skye to the other. River and Nik shared an oversized reading chair.

"Don't stand, please. It's like you're hovering. Pull up another chair," Argos directed, looking at Mica and Venci. "Colonel Devroe, can you please see to the security and make sure everyone is calmed down and any awkward evidence is cleared?"

"Of course, Your Majesty." Devroe bowed to the Emperor and Prince Argos and left the room.

Skye looked at Garrett. "Can we ask... How long have we been gone?"

"Thillean warned us that time did not work the same in Underhill. On this side, it has almost been a month since the portal vanished," Darius answered.

Skye gripped Garrett's thigh. "I don't know what to say."

"There is nothing to say, son. It is what it is. And somehow since your return was in the middle of the night, sneaking into the palace garden, I expect we have bigger issues to discuss," Darius said.

"Yes, and how did you do that? And why is there a portal to Underhill in my garden?" Argos asked.

"Underhill asked where we wanted the gate..." Skye said hesitantly. "We didn't think you'd want it inside the palace."

"You spoke to Underhill. The fae realm actually used words and a voice and talked to you?" Argos crossed his arms and took on a stony expression, his eyebrow crawling up into his hairline.

"It's complicated, and we didn't know of another way to reach you without creating a spectacle," Garrett answered.

"And you thought that entrance was discreet? And a portal in my garden?" Argos huffed. "I'm not sure I like this."

"It isn't a standard gateway and can only be activated by a select few." Skye knew Prince Argos was upset when he sounded more like Nik and dropped all pretense of formality.

"Perhaps if we start at the beginning?" Garrett suggested.

"That is probably best." Darius reached out and took Argos's hand.

The door opened, and Kleitos and Dillon entered, pushing a cart and carrying trays. They stopped for more hugs and for everyone to make plates and get a drink before the group took their seats again.

"You know parts of this, but I think it's still better if we go back to when we first entered Underhill and found the gateway to hell world. That's what we named the planet where the dark fae were exiled. It will make sense, I promise. So..." Garrett took point on beginning their tale with the others joining in when needed. By the time they reached the part where the fae had been brought through and the portal to hell world closed, it was time for a break.

"Is everyone really okay?" Dillon whispered while he poured another glass of berry juice for Skye.

"They are. We haven't gotten to this part of the story, but we have a few new wing-mates too. And Bryan found his bond-mate."

Dillon gasped and covered his mouth, glancing to see if anyone noticed. He leaned in closer. "Willow and Jos's bond marks have started. No question they're mates. Kleitos fitted them with plasti-skin sleeves for now, but you know those won't work forever." He added more food to Skye's plate, again glancing around nervously. "Kleitos thinks your grandfather has the start of a bond mark too."

"Wow. I should have asked, is everyone okay on this side?"

Dillon shrugged. "Mostly. I can't say here, but some things have happened." Dillon blushed and rubbed his neck. "Oh, and there's a group trying to kill Gregg."

"What? Why-"

"Let's get started. I have the feeling you have a lot more to tell us before we're done." Darius waved everyone back to their seats.

Skye couldn't tear his eyes away from Dillon as they returned. He wanted to know what had happened with Gregg. Was he still in danger? It didn't help that he couldn't just drop his shields and ask.

Even with the others helping recount what had happened, it took hours, and Skye was exhausted. He'd hoped that he'd be able to read Father or Pater's expressions or reactions enough to know if they were in trouble for accepting Underhill's offer. The only time he saw a hint of emotion was when they learned that the curse on the heartstone was similar to what had been placed on Zo. He even tried lowering his shields at one point, only to put them back in place almost immediately.

The room was silent; Skye twisted his hands and focused on Garrett's heat pressed into his side.

Darius cleared his throat and looked at Prince Argos. "Well... So much for a quiet day." He turned back to Skye and Garrett. "You made the right choice, Skye. Now, we need to move forward. I think we should start with Admiral Cocachet. After all the changes in Galicon leadership, I don't know who to trust in his command." He turned to Venci. "Once I have a point of contact, I'll get word to you, Venci. I expect you to act as liaison with this Keeper and Arnakkhor until we can acknowledge them. Even after, your assistance will be needed. My gut tells me we should do whatever we can to keep the dark fae on Draga. If the overlap with Underhill only exists here, then it should be their home. It's a big planet." Darius reached out and rubbed Argos's leg. "Once we announce the return of the dark fae, I'll add Arnakkhor to the Assembly."

"He's not planning to remain as king," Skye reminded them.

"It will likely take time to find a successor. He can serve until someone else is named. I agree that it is important that they have a voice. It also reinforces the sovereignty of the Empire." Darius stared off as if thinking while he spoke.

"We could play up the inclusion of the dark fae in Skye's retinue as well," Argos added.

"I'm not sure they're ready for a public appearance. They only speak old elvish, and Draga will be completely foreign and overwhelming. Even our translators struggled at times," Garrett said.

"Well of course, dear. They can be seen without needing to do more. We'll have our medics get the symbiotic implants done as soon as you think they're ready. I'll speak with Arcturus to see if he will need assistance in helping them acclimate. I may ask Lady Telawyn if she'd be willing to stay at the palace for a time." Argos was grinning, which made Skye wonder what else was going on.

"Have you spoken with the Queen Mother? Do you know if she plans on returning to Draga?" Darius asked.

Skye looked at Garrett before answering. "I have no idea but will be glad to ask when we return."

"Kleitos, I'd like you to work with HealthCorps to put together a triage team. I'll make sure you have authority. We can use the camp set up near the elf palace to do initial assessments and decide where best to treat any of the fae who need medical attention once they start coming through," Darius said.

"I'll handle the media and leak word that your training has been completed and you and your team will be returning soon. Dillon, I'll have the seneschal work with you on finding accommodations in the Palace for the new wing-mates. Unfortunately, the south wing's renovations won't be finished for a while yet. I'd like them in the palace and settled before we deal with the chaos of announcing the return of the dark fae."

"Pater, do you want me to assist with getting them through medical?" Kleitos asked.

"If you would. In addition to the symbionts, they should get full bio- comm implants with royal protocols like the others. The royal medics know to keep their tongues, and I'll think of something to tell the staff." Argos rubbed his chin.

"Dear, if they brought Quanta through the gate in the garden. He could begin work on modifying the palace spells, or at least he would know which of his team to call in. It would be best if Skye's team and his new wing-mates came to Draga discreetly and not through the fae kingdom, and not set off all the alarms each time," Darius said.

"I agree. He can always return and come back through the other portal if needed. Some knew he'd been called to assist the fae, and we implied that 'the training' was taking place in the fae lands. Also it will be hard to keep it a secret once the dark fae cross over." Argos stared off to the side as if thinking. "Communication will be a challenge until the symbionts can be placed. They may need to stay in the fae lands for a time."

"Most of the elves don't have the symbiotic implants," Kleitos pointed out.

An evil grin spread across Darius's face, and he looked at Argos. "If we could convince Arnakkhor to communicate to his people about the translation implants and tech and what it might do for them-"

Argos laughed. "Oh, that's perfect. The dark fae would have an advantage over their brethren and-"

"The light fae will demand the same be offered to them," Darius finished.

Skye watched as the two seemed to go into a mind-to-mind conversation and waited until they returned their attention back to him.

"I know this was a lot to drop on you." Skye took a deep breath. "I have no idea how we're going to explain the elves or others being able to bond. We won't be able to keep it a secret for long once the portal opens back up. There are too many to assume someone won't talk."

"Of course. Fortunately, Kleitos and I have used your time away to begin planning. When Willow's bond-mark showed, I knew we had to do something." Argos gave a meaningful look at Kleitos.

"Yeah, well... I've already begun seeding 'evidence' that other races have been compatible in the past. Some of it has already been discovered but has yet to be leaked to the public or discussed openly in the medical forums. We intentionally left the how or why unsaid. It is likely that the first few cases will be scrutinized and those showing the signs will be 'confined' for more study." Kleitos shrugged.

Oh, hell no. Skye thought. No way was anyone putting a finger on Willow.

"We will set up a distraction." Argos picked up the thread as if reading Skye's mind. "Through an unrelated set of events, we have several wolf- shifters who can be offered up as the first cases. Regent Thillean is helping find an elf or two he'd like taken off his hands."

"But they don't have the ability to bond. Only the ones I changed in Underhill," Skye began. "So-"

"Why you'll change them of course. How long does it take?" Argos sat forward.

"We know it's not instantaneous, but Skye hasn't tracked it. We also wouldn't know when the testing would recognize the ability," Garrett explained.

"Wait. Are these shifters criminals? Do you want them mated to dragons?" River objected.

"Father Dragon, no. We wouldn't allow that." Darius jumped in, looking very indignant. "They are...guilty by association, nothing more. Before they'd be selected, we'd want you to check them again."

"Kleitos, you what to do. Let's start with one of the wolf-shifters. Have the lab monitor him daily once Skye has initiated the change." Argos turned back to Skye. "I'm so sorry to add further delays, but I fear this is the only way to protect your wing-mates."

"No, I agree." Skye sat back and hugged himself. 'Ah, fudge, Mistral. I get the distinct impression they're asking us to change them against their will.'

'It is concerning, but his plan has merit. Perhaps we try to discover who these 'wolves' are and why he has chosen them. They may not be unwilling. But, Skye. I'd do almost anything to protect our wing-mates, and I trust Pater,' Mistral said. 'But we have another problem. What if those we changed in Underhill talk?'

'Shit, you're right. Let's ask Keeper when we return.'

"You must be exhausted." Darius gave them a look of concern. "Argos and I can start right away on our part. You may want to think of the best way to introduce your new wing-mates to Draga. You should rest, and we can resume our conversation later."

"By then, we may have more to share. I'd recommend staying within the palace. Devroe will ensure the staff and guards keep your presence confidential. Do you have anything you must do before you return to Underhill? We can only hide your presence for a short while," Prince Argos said.

Skye glanced at Garrett. "Not that we know of."

"We are so glad you are safe, and while the circumstances are unusual, it is nothing we can't work through." Darius stood, signaling that the discussion was ended.

Skye and the others got another round of hugs before they were on their way to their rooms.

  • Scene 2 *

By unspoken agreement, they all headed for Skye and Garrett's room. Since they were already in the family wing, it wasn't far and they didn't run into anyone else. Dillon opened the door and stood back as the others entered.

Skye was glad he'd kept his shields up as he saw who was waiting for them. He still felt overwhelmed, and the tears started as soon as he saw the suite crowded with his team. A quick count of bodies told him that fifteen of his wing-mates had come to welcome them back. He hadn't even managed to get a word out before Braden spoke up.

"Hold on, hold on. One second..." Braden was doing something on his bio- comm and then two holo images were added to the assembly. One was Lord Eluf and the other was Taleel and Jerrick.

Now, Skye couldn't speak even if he wanted to. He knew that if he tried, he'd break into sobs, so he bit his lip and let Garrett pull him into his strong arms. Even shielding, the emotions hitting him through the bonds were too much.

"Holy fuck, we missed you guys!" River and Nik jumped right in and started making rounds of hugging people.

Skye felt a nudge against his shields and lowered them just a little.

I can help you if you'd allow, Kwill offered.

Yes, please. Skye immediately felt a sense of calm wash over him. The tears stopped, and he took a deep breath. Thank you.

You should be able to ease back on your shields now. They've all calmed somewhat and won't be trying to mind-speak you at once.

Skye hadn't even seen Kwill yet, so searched for him in the group. Kwill! What happened? Are you okay? Should you even be up and moving?

I'll be fine. It will take some time, but I can assure you that Beck and I are both recovering. You have more important things to do than worry about us.

Skye wanted to ask more, but he could feel everyone's gaze and knew they all wanted answers. He decided that it would be best to address those on the holo since they wouldn't be able to pick up all that was happening in the room. Skye stepped out of Garrett's embrace and walked over to where Braden was standing.

"I wish you could be here in person." Skye looked at Lord Eluf's image. "I don't know how soon we can meet again in person, but hopefully, it won't be too long. I'll explain to the group but 'officially' we haven't returned. There are a number of things we have to take care of before the public can know we're back."

"I understand. It's good just to see and feel you again," Eluf said.

"And you two..." Skye turned to the images of Jerrick and Taleel. "How soon will you be back planet side?"

"Another week at most. Captain Nekko granted us leave. The modifications to the ship and testing are ahead of schedule, and we've done our part," Jerrick answered.

"Besides that, we miss our wing," Taleel added.

Skye turned to hug Braden and had the overwhelming urge to rub his face against his wing-mate. Skye gripped the back of Braden's neck and squeezed, then ran his face along Braden's cheek. He felt Braden relax in his arms and inhaled, feeling better that he now carried Skye's scent.

The next closest was Leesai, and Skye almost choked up again when he saw the gruff Felecian fighting tears of her own. "We've missed you, little dragon." He did the same with Leesai, gripping the back of her neck and rubbing cheeks. But Leesai turned the other cheek and did the same to Skye.

"I missed you too. There were more than a few times I could have used your help." Skye again committed to himself that he'd find a way to make things better for Leesai. He stepped from her hug right into Ian's arms.

"What? You didn't bring Nels?" He repeated the gesture and scented Ian.

"I wasn't sure of the etiquette, and he didn't mind staying back."

Corey was next and he answered the question before Skye formed the words.

"Ronan's out on tour."

"Should I be concerned that you're here and not with him?" Skye asked.

Dillon tapped Skye on the shoulder. "I'll explain later."

Corey gave Dillon a smile and sat back down on the bed. Arcturus stood and Skye stepped back, having forgotten how big the bear was. Arcturus didn't give him a chance before he pulled Skye into an engulfing hug. It made it a little more awkward to rub cheeks with the bear, but he must have understood as he leaned into Skye to make it easier.

"Not fair to bond a bear then leave," Arcturus muttered.

"Sorry about that. I assure you it wasn't my plan."

"Move aside, Bro. My turn." River hip-checked Skye and wrapped his arms around Arcturus's neck as the bear hugged him in return.

"You know, at this rate, it will be lunchtime before we even get through hugs," Garrett grumbled as Christos and Rilien sandwiched the dragon between them. Skye knew his mate didn't object, especially given who was taking over his personal space.

Skye ignored his mate and continued the greeting with each of the others. He'd never felt the urge before, but it felt so right he couldn't stop himself or maybe, he couldn't stop Mistral.

"I've already asked the kitchen to send up breakfast. Not sure where we'll put it all, but we'll figure something out," Dillon said.

"Damn, it's nice to have you back with us, Dil." Garrett picked up the elf and kissed him.

"Gregg, did we hear that there's something you need to tell us?" Nik asked as he found a spot on the floor to sit.

Gregg blushed and looked at the others, probably for support. "Maybe later, after you tell us where you've been and what happened."

"He's right, Nik. It's not time sensitive, and everything is under control and being handled by Prince Argos. We can explain later, and for now, he's sharing a room with Feired," Braden explained.

"Wait, you guys are all living at the palace?" River asked.

"Prince Argos insisted. We're in the same wing with the Imperial Guards," Fiske said. "And Jos is staying in Willow's room officially."

"Wow." Skye realized there was a lot for them to catch up on. He mentally reached out to Kwill. Do you agree? There's nothing urgent we need to discuss before recapping?

Braden is correct.

Skye gave Kwill a worried look. The psion was usually more sharing but seemed to be mind-speaking in sound bites. Christos grabbed Skye's arm and pulled him onto the couch. He and Rilien sandwiched him in as Garrett took a spot at his feet, leaning back so they could still touch.

Skye began their tale with the trip to the fae kingdom, passing into Underhill and the journey to hell world. They broke to get food when it arrived, and Skye and River, with the others chiming in, told the wing about what had happened since they'd been gone.

By the time they were through, everyone agreed the adventurers needed their rest. River and Nik took Mica with them to their room, and Dillon put Venci in his bed.

"We'll let you get some rest before dinner and when you have to meet with Father and Pater again." Dillon pulled down the covers on the bed to get it ready for them.

"Would you nap with us? Skye and I have missed having you share our bed." Garrett gave his best pleading eyes.

"Are you sure?" Dillon glanced back and forth between them.

"Sorry, but we're not up for sexy times; this is just snuggles. I promise we'll make it up to you later." Skye put a hand on Dillon's shoulder. Please?

  • Scene 3 *

Skye woke feeling much better and grinned as he felt the gentle rocking of the bed. Mistral stirred, his dragon waking and stretching.

'Our mate started without us.'

Skye hesitantly lowered his shields, ready to pull them back up in an instant if it was too much. He let out a sigh as it almost felt "normal." It was comforting to feel his wing-mates who had been cut off for so long, but now, he was very aware of those he'd left in Underhill.

'Damn it, Mistral, I want them all together.'

'Soon,' his dragon soothed.

Skye kept his eyes closed as he tentatively reached out with his mind. His nose and other senses already told him without looking that Garrett and Dillon were going at it. Not surprising as Dillon mounting Garrett first thing when they woke was a given whenever the elf shared their bed.

He was very aware of the web of bonds as his mind settled. Like he'd noticed in Underhill, the connections to those in Underhill were still there but felt "quiet" or strained. He methodically checked in on each of his team, trying to keep a light enough touch that it wouldn't disturb them. They were all well, and he felt an answering thrum as he brushed against Kwill and Beck.

'There's something not right with them, Mistral. I know he said they were recovering, but it worries me.'

'We can ask Pater or Kleitos; one of them might know if Kwill won't tell us more,' Mistral responded.

'Good idea. I'd guess it has to do with whatever happened on their home world.'

Are you going to join us or keep pretending to be asleep? Garrett asked.

Join you, of course. I was just checking on everyone. After being separated, I might be paranoid.

Garrett pulled the covers away from Skye. We'll distract you.

Skye rolled over and grinned. Garrett was on his back, slightly propped against the headboard, with Dillon riding him faced away from his mate. Garrett's hands were on the elf's hips, steadying him while Dillon's head was thrown back in bliss.

'We need to take care of that.' Mistral drew Skye's eyes to Dillon's hard dick, a shimmer of pre-cum coating the head.

Skye crawled over and pushed Garrett's legs aside so he could get between them. He licked a swath up Dillon's length, catching a drip of elf nectar. 'Mm...so sweet. Do you think he'll get along with the new wing- mates?'

Skye took Dillon into his mouth with a moan and began sucking, sliding up and down as he let Dillon into his throat.

'We'll make sure he does. I think we might want to nudge him toward taking Revali and Jhaeros under his wing. Mattekin might also respond well since Dillon's an elf. I'm not yet sure about Kibli, we'll have to see. But Dillon would help Revali, and Jhaeros will pull Dillon further out of his shell.' Mistral coaxed Skye to suck harder.

Skye slid his hands up Dillon's tight body, reminding himself of how the elf felt under his fingers. Hard muscle just below the silky smooth skin, hard nipples, begging to be sucked and toyed with. Skye's thumbs teased them as he continued to suck, while Garrett's cock filled Dillon in the best way.

Reminding himself that it had been a while since they'd been with Dillon, Skye pulled on his magic and then reached for Garrett's, gathering it and spooling it until the right moment.

Dillon let out a moan and his muscles tensed. Skye could sense the release coming and prepared to suck down every drop. Within seconds it hit.

"Garrrrrreetttt." Dillon bounced harder on Garrett, moving his hips and undulating to feel the thick cock inside him. His own cock fountained with cum, filling Skye's mouth as fast as he could swallow.

"I'm going to fill you with so much dragon seed you'll be leaking all day," Garrett grunted and began thrusting faster, drawing out Dillon's orgasm.

Skye slurped and sucked, not letting Dillon's dick escape his mouth. He released the magic, filling their wing-mate with their combined power.

Dillon cried out again, and Skye was rewarded with a second volley of elf cream. He licked him clean and nibbled up Dillon's torso until they kissed. Skye was sure that only Garrett's grip was keeping Dillon upright. With gentle care, they tipped him to the side, and Garrett withdrew, laying more kisses over the elf's shoulders and back.

"So good," Dillon murmured into Skye's mouth as they continued to kiss.

"You got him?" Garrett asked.

"Yeah, we'll cuddle while you get cleaned up." Skye pulled Dillon in and spooned against him, taking the opportunity to touch every bit of skin he could. "I missed you. Are you doing okay?"

"Hmm... Much better now. The other guys are great, but they're not you and Garrett."

"I'm sorry. We weren't given the option to get back sooner. You up to telling me what's going on?"

"What do you mean?" Dillon took Skye's hand and brought it to his lips, licking and sucking on Skye's fingers.

"Kwill and Beck look like shit. Someone's trying to kill Gregg, and everyone's on edge." Skye felt himself getting hard again, and the way Dillon sucked on his thumb was not helping his focus. "Are you trying to seduce me?"

"I don't know. Is it working?"

Skye laughed and kissed Dillon's neck, burying his nose in the auburn silk of his hair. "It is."

Dillon released his hand and turned so he was on his back. Skye wasn't sure if he'd rather Dillon continue or get answers.

"Kwill didn't share a lot. But he did say that when they were held prisoner, their captors drugged them with something that affected their minds and telepathy. Pater insisted that they stay in the infirmary until the medics say they're back to normal. Kwill said it will take time but that they'll both recover fully. They had to get Prince Argos's approval to be here earlier."

"I bet Pater was upset when he found out that they'd been hurt." Skye couldn't imagine him taking it well. In what he'd seen, the prince was very protective of those he considered his.

"I'm pretty sure the ones who did it are dead."

"Oh. Guess I'm not surprised."

'No. I think it was very appropriate. If he even was the one to make it happen. We don't know that,' Mistral said.

"Yeah. The thing with Gregg is more complicated. A few of the packs have taken exception to Gregg's popularity. They've tried a few times to have him kidnapped or killed. He's not allowed to leave the palace and has to have his own guards with him at all times. Pretty sure they've rounded up most of those involved, but it's not like anyone's telling us."

"They didn't get close, did they?" Skye couldn't imagine losing his wolf.

"No. Just gave us a scare and got everyone worked up. It's been quiet for the last week. But I guess before you find out from someone else, they also attacked Lord Eluf. And don't ask because I know even less about that. I just know from Braden that they assassinated his seneschal and his driver. He might be able to tell you more."

"I supposed I shouldn't have expected it to be completely quiet while we were gone, but I sure wasn't expecting anything like this. Everyone else is okay, right?"

"Yeah. Gregg's a little jumpy, but he's doing fine. I think he's more worried that he can't do his job."

"I'll have to see what I can find out." Skye breathed in Dillon's scent, trying to recommit it to memory. "Not sure I understand why they think Gregg is a threat. He's not even part of a pack anymore."

"That's just it. He doesn't have a pack, but because of his connection to you and the royal family, he gets lots of media attention. He's proven a wolf-shifter can be successful without a pack."

"Ohhhhh...yeah, that's a lot like Christos and the panthers." Skye thought for a moment, enjoying the feel of Dillon in his arms. 'I wonder if the Emperor's maneuvering has put Gregg in this spot. He might be sending a message, but our wolf is the one paying for it.'

'Not so different from what he did with the elves. Regardless of how much they deserved it, he's gradually taking down all the independent groups,' Mistral said.

'I think we should ask Pater. He's likely to know the most.'

"Your turn," Garrett called out, stepping back into the room. Skye watched as Garrett pulled out a pair of leggings and realized he'd get to put on real clothes too.

'No leather, Mistral.'

'We look good in leather. As does our mate. We should get more,' Mistral responded.

Dragons, Skye muttered in his head before turning to Dillon and offering him a hand. "Come on, Dillon. You can join me in the shower."

"Hey!" Garrett yelled. "No fun stuff. You've got just enough time to get clean and dressed before we need to be at dinner." He paused. "Wouldn't want to have to explain to Pater why you're late."

Skye chuckled as he turned on the water. It was good to be back, even if he didn't get to play more with Dillon.

  • Scene 4 *

Skye stared at Prince Argos as his brain tried to catch up. "But that doesn't make any sense. What could they possibly gain by attacking the King of the Vampires?" They'd finished their meal but had stayed to continue the conversation. Even his grandparents had remained. Unusual, as they usually tried to stay out of difficult conversations.

They'd gathered in what he'd always heard referred to as "the breakfast room." It was a small dining room, almost intimate by palace standards. Stranger still was that Dillon and Feired, along with just one other person, had taken on serving them. Pater had given the serving staff the evening off, explaining that it was easier to keep secrets if fewer knew them in the first place.

Skye was sure they'd still speculate and rumors might spread, but with Tennat hovering in the shadows, it might work.

'I'd much rather have Kwill and Beck with us,' Mistral grumbled.

They'd been disappointed to find that their psions couldn't join them and dinner would be only the immediate family. Pater assured Skye that Kwill and Beck would be fine but needed supervised care in the royal infirmary.

"A lot of things here don't make sense," Skye and River's Grandfather, Charlie, grumbled.

"Dear, he said it couldn't be avoided and promised to come back as soon as he could." Nancy was keeping her voice low, but with dragon hearing, it didn't matter to most in the room.

"Luca had to work?" River asked.

"He was called for an emergency meeting at the Academy. He didn't know why," Nancy said.

Skye noticed Prince Argos paying too much attention to his food and wondered if it might not be their fault.

"And you are right, Skye. The wolves picking a fight with the vampires is not a wise move. But then they attacked an imperial guard on palace grounds." Argos huffed. "I don't think intelligence is one of their gifts. That they thought, for one moment, they could get to Greggory while he was in the palace-or that there wouldn't be serious repercussions." Argos sounded both angry and dumbfounded at the packs' attempts.

"Do you think you've rounded up all those responsible?" Garrett asked.

"Unlikely, but we've certainly given them a good scare. Those we didn't find have gone into hiding. What they fail to realize is that with the help of a psion, we know who they are and will find them eventually. It's not like they can escape off-world. The pack who was at the center has been publicly disbanded. Those guilty of direct action against either Greggory or Lord Eluf's interests are awaiting trial. The members who were not involved are being detained in an undisclosed location for their own safety. Vetha Blackclaw and the Elders of the Were-council already had to face the Assembly. It did not go well for them. The Assembly was very unforgiving about one of their own members being attacked."

"Safe from whom?" Nik asked.

"And what happened to Blackclaw?" Skye added.

"Safe from the vampires, for one. A bit of glamour and they'd learn who was responsible for Lorde Eluf's seneschal, Raphael's death and take justice into their own hands. Obviously, we can't have vigilantes running rampant, especially when they'd likely take out any even remotely associated with the perpetrators. Eluf is doing his best to quiet his brood, but a direct attack against the vampire king pushes the limits. Raphael being a Pembran has also stirred up some who are claiming discrimination."

"How much does the public know?" Garrett asked.

"Fortunately, only part of it. They know Lord Eluf's seneschal and his driver were attacked and killed by wolf-shifters. Hard to hide an explosion in the middle of the city. From the Assembly meeting, they also know there was some type of attack on the palace, and they know what packs were responsible. Greggory has more than a few devoted fans, so we can be glad they don't know those details. Lord Eluf is keeping the services for Raphael private to avoid any spectacles. I know you won't be able to pay your respects in person for Raphael, but I can assure you, Father and I will honor Lord Eluf's servant and ensure his passing does not go unnoticed."

"The whole situation is stupid if you ask me." Charlie emptied his wine glass. Fortunately Dillon noticed and quickly refilled it.

"And Vetha?" Skye reminded.

"Publicly humiliated for having no control over the shifters. Father didn't have to say a word. The other assembly members lambasted Blackclaw for his ineptitude and demanded he step down. They also called the Elders to account and motioned for the shifters to lose any sovereignty they now claimed and come fully under the rule of the Empire."

"Do you think it will happen?" Garrett asked.

Argos shrugged. "From the reaction of the Assembly, it's only a matter of time and procedure. The Were-council will be given a chance to speak against the motion, but the blatant disregard for imperial law has already sealed their fate. It was also found that the pack tried to conceal a murder amongst their own with the knowledge of Blackclaw and the council. The second of the pack who's at the center of this mess has been accused of murdering a female pack member who had been associating with Lord Eluf. The city guards received an anonymous tip with enough evidence to confirm."

"Let me guess." Garrett looked around at the others. "The wolf-shifters you want Skye to change are from the packs who started the mess?"

"Seems appropriate to me. I doubt all of them are worthy, but those who could be a good mate would certainly have their focus redirected," Pater said.

"And further prove that the wolf-shifters don't need a pack." Skye could see it falling into place.

"Of course, dear. I always knew you'd make an excellent ruler." Pater grinned at Skye, and he felt both proud and a little unnerved.

"What about the shifters who wouldn't make a good dragon bond-mate?" River asked.

Pater shrugged as a smirk flashed on his face briefly.

"Yeah, that's what I thought." River turned to look at Nik, and Skye wondered if they were speaking mind-to-mind. All the signs were there.

"Were there females or children?" Skye asked.

"Some. Any females who were involved with the plotting will be treated the same as the males. Those who were not involved or mated with cubs are being held separately until Tennat can confirm they're of no threat. Father will have his people integrate them with other, more cooperative packs if there aren't issues. Their new alpha will take over their bonds and ensure that they keep in line," Argos explained.

"Are there any packs that can be trusted?" River asked.

"Several. From what we've gathered, only a few wolf packs were involved, and the others quickly distanced themselves and offered their support. The Were-council seems to get that they're on thin ice."

"I'm surprised Father is already meeting with the Admiral about the fae. That was pretty quick," Garrett said, changing subjects back to Underhill.

"Cocachet has been intimately involved since the start. Many of those who consulted when we had to have a plan for the other world have remained on standby. Everyone assumed the portal would open again soon." Argos sighed. "Not as soon as we'd hoped, but there's no helping that. I forgot to mention that Father spoke with Thillean since they likely knew as soon as a portal opened."

"Were the elves upset?" Garrett asked.

"Surprised, but also pleased that there wasn't a problem with the portal. Father gave him what assurances he could. Now, our focus needs to be on getting you home to stay," Argos said.

"Well, we certainly want that," Nancy piped in. "But we are so glad to know you're all well and safe. I can live with you disappearing again for a short while if I must. I'm still in shock that you found Brenda. We thought for sure that she and James were both dead."

"Grandma B really wants to see you both again. Once things calm down, we'll try to figure out how to make it happen," Skye said.

"You mean going to Underhill?" Grandpa's voice cracked.

"It's not so bad, Pops. I'm sure Luca would go with you," River said.

"Well, we'll do what we need to. I'm not sure I'm happy about you going back so soon, but there's not much choice, is there?" Charlie added and took Nancy's hand.

"I'd rather they stay also, Charlie. But if we can get Cocachet to start working on how to deal with the dark fae and how to re-home them, and Quanta can fix the spells on the palace, that would be a good start. It would let us do check-ins without alerting everyone in the palace," Argos said.

"And once the wolves show compatibility, we can leak the news, and all the attention will be on them," Kleitos said.

"Thillean promised to have a few elves to me by end of day. I believe he had a couple already in mind. We'll transport them here as soon as we can; you can do your thing and then return to Underhill. Devroe has also found a panther shifter and a lion we can use. We wouldn't want it to look like it could only be wolves." Argos sat back and looked around at the others.

Skye's stomach dropped. It wasn't new news. He knew they'd have to return quickly but he'd have much rather had more time. Then again, knowing that the delay would help keep his wing-mates safe was more important.

"How long do you think we have until people get suspicious or we can't keep it quiet?" Garrett asked.

"Tomorrow morning at the latest. Keeping the servants away longer will raise questions we can't answer." Argos's sympathy was clear in his expression.

"Where are the shifters, and how will Skye get to them?" River asked.

"We'll wait until late tonight and take the tube. I'll be going with you, Skye, and I'm afraid you'll need to pretend to be a guard again."

"Gee. Just like old times," Skye muttered.

"Won't we be going with him?" Garrett asked.

"Too obvious. We need to keep it to as few as possible so as not to draw attention." Argos gave Garrett one of his parental "looks."

"Well, I'm going. Skye's disappeared too many times already." River crossed his arms and gave a credible glare right back at Prince Argos.

Skye held his breath and braced himself. When he saw Argos smile, he worried even more. They hadn't given the group all the details so they hadn't known how many times Underhill nabbed Skye without warning.

"I already had uniforms for both of you delivered to your rooms."

Skye bit his lip when he saw the stunned look on River's face. Yet again, Prince Argos was one step ahead of them.

"Are you sure it's safe?" Garrett gripped Skye's leg a little tighter than what was comfortable.

"He'll be with me, the Imperial Guards, in a secure tube car and then in one of our facilities. I think he'll be okay."

"Forgive me for saying it, but you all seem much more nervous than you were before going to Underhill. Was there something you didn't share?" Nancy asked.

"We gave you the highlights and jumped to the points where we knew what was going on. There were many times where something happened or someone 'disappeared' and we had no idea what was going on. Underhill seemed to make a habit of snatching Skye without warning and sending him off by himself. Sometimes when he'd been with the group seconds before," River said.

"But with your bond and your telepathy, you should have been able to speak with the others, right?" Nancy asked.

"Only when Underhill wanted him to." River scowled and gave Skye a look daring him to argue.

"River's right. While it all worked out, there were some very tense moments."

"And you want us to trust Underhill?" Charlie challenged.

"I think I understand. If Underhill sees the fae as its children, it's not so different from what I'd do. I'm hoping to get the chance to speak with this Keeper you mentioned. I may enjoy working with Underhill." Argos gave a smug look. "I have a few more things to take care of before we can leave. I'll let you know when it's time." Argos left the room.

Skye turned to his grandparents and opened his other sight once he was sure that Argos was gone.

'Huh. No doubts now... Grandpa and Grandma are both definitely bonded, and I'm assuming to Bianchi.'

'That would be most likely,' Mistral agreed.

What is it, Skye? Garrett asked.

Surprised that Garrett hadn't already picked it up, Skye decided he might as well tell the others.

"Grandma, Grandpa, is there something you want to share with us?"

"What?" River turned to look at him, then startled and turned to their grandparents. Skye bit his lip to avoid laughing when he realized River had picked up on his thoughts confirming the bond. "Go, Grandpa!"

Charlie blushed and Nancy took his hand before looking at them. "Your grandfather and I have finally found what we've been missing. We haven't said anything to anyone else, but we, the three of us, have decided to try being in a relationship."

River snorted and leaned over to whisper to Nik.

"That's really great but..." Skye stopped and turned as he heard Nik's intake of breath, his eyes wide with his hand over his mouth. River must have let his mate know.

"You need to tell them," Garrett said softly.

"Grandma, Grandpa, you are passed trying. You've already bonded with Luca. Both of you. If it hasn't already started to show, you'll be getting a bond-mark soon. It starts like a little colorful spot-usually on your wrist, then grows to cover your arm." Skye held out his arm and pulled the sleeve back to show them his gold dragon.

Nancy gasped and covered her mouth, eyes wide. Charlie held out his hands and turned them over, looking until a huge grin split his face.

"You'll probably want to keep it quiet until Pater says it's okay. But maybe tell Luca. He'll probably need time to adjust. Kleitos, can you help them hide the marks for now?" Skye felt the love from his grandparents.

"I'll take care of it." Kleitos smiled fondly at the couple.

"I just... I mean... I can't believe it. It's like our life has started over since we came here." Nancy turned and kissed Charlie.

Skye was surprised he hadn't noticed earlier, but they both looked younger and more vibrant than when he left. They'd already showed signs of better health and had shed years before he'd left for Underhill. It made him wonder how far the "rejuvenation" would go. Was it part of being bonded? Would this happen for any older human who found their mate? The questions continued to build.

Skye stilled when Garrett's hand massaged his neck. The heat and touch calming him.

We'll figure it out in time. For now, let them be happy, Garrett sent.

Wasn't the whole point of Kwill's trip to research platinums and find the notes from that rogue? River asked.

That was his goal, but remember, his government recalled him and Beck. I'd love to know if they found anything, but it's going to have to wait, Skye responded.

"I'm not sure what to do next. It didn't really sink in that we'd have such a short time here before we returned to Underhill," River said.

"When you come back, it would be a good idea to get a full exam. Not saying that anything has changed, but we don't know what Underhill does to dragons," Kleitos said.

"I'll mention it to Prince Argos," Nancy volunteered.

"Gee, thanks," River and Skye muttered simultaneously then looked at each other and laughed.

"I wish you wouldn't do that. It's kind of creepy," Nik said, scowling.

"You should have been around him and Jasper." River grinned. "They were always finishing each other's sentences."

"No more than the two of you," Nancy chided. "And you're right, Nik. It can be very unnerving. I can only imagine how bad it's going to get now that they can speak telepathically."

"And read each other's minds," Nik grumbled.

"Ah, come on. You love me." River pulled Nik into a kiss and everyone politely looked away. River still hadn't caught on to where to draw the line on what was appropriate in public.

"I'd like to spend a little more time with the wing before Pater needs us," Skye said.

"Dillon said several of the others are gathering in the English study," Kleitos said as he looked at his bio-comm.

"Where's that?" River asked.

"I'll show you." Kleitos stood from the table.

"Before you go." Nancy came around the table and gave Skye and River hugs. "Please be careful and come back soon."

"We love you, boys." Charlie gave River a hug then pulled in Skye.

  • Scene 5 *

"How did I never know this was here?" Skye asked as they followed Kleitos.

"Because there are too many studies to remember all of them," Nik said.

"There aren't that many." Garrett took Skye's hand as they walked.

Leesai and Jos were waiting for them outside the breakfast room when they left and now acted as guards to give them a little privacy. Skye guessed that the study was just up ahead when he saw the two Imperial Guards standing in the hallway.

They opened the door for the group but said nothing about Skye or the other princes' presence. Rather than having his attention drawn to his wing-mates, Skye was caught by the room itself.

"Whoa. Looks like Sherlock Holmes would fit right in." The study was done in rich colors and an abundance of wood and paneling indicative of the late Victorian and early Edwardian period in London.

"No shit..." River didn't finish his statement but did bump shoulders with Skye.

"Can I get you a drink?" Dillon asked, standing next to a period bar cart.

"No, I'm good. Especially if we have to go out later with Pater. I'll need every brain cell," Skye answered.

"And then some," River muttered.

"I'll take a scotch, Dillon." Garrett pulled Skye over to a spot on the couch and sat.

Nik shook his head, and Kleitos went over to either help Dillon or pour his own.

"I'm sorry we're going to have to leave so soon. This situation got to be very complicated." Skye looked around the room and saw his team nod, and now that he'd adjusted to being back and didn't have to shield so tightly, he could feel their agreement.

"But you said everyone is okay, right?" Willow confirmed.

"Yeah. There were a few bumps and some scary times, like with the bugs and worms I told you about."

"And that night elf," River coughed into his hand.

"Oh, yeah. And one delusional elf," Skye added. "I'm going to need your help with the new guys. Especially you, Arc. Not only are they not from this time, they were raised on a strange world and don't know anything about the Empire, modern technology, the current state of the fae-"

"Hell, they still speak old elvish," River put in.

"I'll make sure the medics are ready with the symbiotic implants and bio- comms. They'll need a full work up anyway. We also need to make sure they are inoculated. They may not have any natural immunity to things we take for granted." Kleitos went quiet and stared off as if working things out in his head. Skye was relieved to have him on point to help.

"Arc, so you know. They are adults but will need tutoring on pretty much everything. We can talk to Pater about private instructors, but they need some basics first."

"There are two, right? The night elf and the eagle shifter?"

"Three. There is also a half-dwarf-half-elf. And technically, the other is a siren. I don't know what the difference is, and he may be unique as I understand male sirens are extremely rare."

"You mean non-existent. Quanta thought he might be the only one," Venci added.

"Yeah, that."

"I will do my best, of course," Arcturus said.

"They're going to be overwhelmed." Dillon handed Garrett a drink.

"For sure. Dillon, I want you to help Mattekin. He grew up on Draga but has never been outside the fae kingdom. He'll be most comfortable with you and Rilien. He speaks modern elvish but knows nothing about the rest of the world."

"That's messed up, Skye," Rilien said.

"One problem at a time," Skye responded.

"Can't believe Bryan found his mate," Feired said.

"Will he need help as well?" Dillon asked.

"A little like Mattekin though I'm pretty sure he's been outside the fae kingdom. He and Gilian were teammates before she joined the guard," Garrett said.

"There's got to be a story there." Fiske laughed, and Mica snorted his drink.

"I'm sure you'll hear all about it eventually. Do you mind if I ask what else we've missed? Is there anything we need to take care of?" Skye asked.

"Or that he needs to worry about and brood over?" Garrett said it with a smile and gave Skye a kiss, but Skye still wasn't pleased.

"I swear I didn't do anything to piss off the wolves. Or at least anything new." Gregg seemed a bit defensive.

"He didn't, Skye. We're not sure what set them off, though Prince Argos thinks your absence might have been seen as an opportunity. He thought perhaps they assumed we would be laxer with you not here," Braden said.

"From something you said earlier and a couple of comments Pater made, I got the sense you've been working with him?" Skye was curious but didn't want Braden to feel awkward.

"He won't say it, but I can. Prince Argos pulled Braden in to act as his personal assistant as soon as Venci left. He's been at the Prince's side ever since, including after we got back to Capital City," Fiske explained.

"Yeah, that's true." Braden refused to make eye contact.

"Are you okay with it?" Skye asked and opened his mind a little more to pick up on Braden's emotions.

"It's...uncomfortable at times. But yeah, I'm fine with helping him."

Skye picked up on the nuances and hesitations that Braden didn't put into words. He couldn't even say he was surprised.

'We need to reassure him that we approve and he's not in trouble,' Mistral said.

'And that we won't go looking for the secrets he's supposed to hold,' Skye responded.

Braden, don't be afraid. Pater knows about my abilities, and he'd never have involved you if he was worried about me learning things. I won't go looking, but you aren't going to get in trouble just because I pick up on something. Skye knew he'd need to think more about this once everything calmed down. There was no reason that Celeste couldn't have supported Pater, so there had to be more to it.

Thank you. I think Fiske has picked up on it too. Not the secrets but that I'm hiding something.

Skye looked over at Fiske and did a quick dive. Fiske must have sensed him because he turned and caught Skye's gaze.

I won't say anything. I was in the room since Prince Argos took me on as one of his personal guards when we were at the elf palace. I didn't overhear a lot, but I know he had Braden taking care of 'things.' If you can let him know we have his back? Fiske shared, obviously picking up on the direction of Skye's thoughts.

I will, thank you, Fiske. Skye turned back to Braden after making sure the others were still in conversation and hadn't noticed Skye's silence. Braden, you don't need to worry about the wing either. We've got your back. I want you to be careful of course, but you're not in this alone.

Skye noticed Dillon looking around somewhat nervously.

"Skye, there's something else you should know. We discovered that wing- mates do not do well on their own. It's not just Lord Eluf needing a wing-mate's blood, Corey and Braden got hit with it too. It's almost like a sickness when one of us is separated from the others for too long."

Venci snorted and held up his hands as if lifting something. "Praise the Father Dragon. You said it. Totally sucks and you think you're losing your mind."

"Then you get sick," Corey added in a soft voice.

"Oh... That's why you're here and not with Ronan." Skye realized, putting the pieces together.

"He collapsed and went to the hospital. Prince Argos had him moved here, and it still took several days being with us before he recovered," Braden explained. "I didn't get nearly so bad because they sent Fiske to be with me when I said I was having problems."

"We'll have to be more careful. Guess we were really lucky that Taleel and Jerrick were assigned to work together. That wouldn't have gone well," Garrett said.

"Maybe once Kwill and Beck can be back with us, they can help us figure out if it needs to be just one wing-mate or if it would be better with a different number. We don't want anyone suffering," Skye said.

"And with shipping out on the Temero in a couple of months, we need to figure it out soon," River pointed out.

"What about Lord Eluf? He doesn't have any wing brothers with him either," Skye asked.

"Feired and I visited Lord Eluf." Dillon blushed a bright red, triggering Skye's curiosity.

As Skye picked up on Dillon's memory of the evening, he blushed along with his wing-brother. "Oh. Ohhhhhh... Um... well, yeah I'm pretty sure my magic noticed Basil too."

"You?" Dillon squeaked.

"Sorry, you leaked." Skye moved on quickly, not wanting to embarrass his friend even more. "Once we're back, I'll need to make it a priority to welcome the blue. Feired, were you okay feeding Lord Eluf?"

There were several snorts and chuckles around the room and Venci let out a dramatic sigh.

"I didn't mind. Though I'm pretty sure you and Jayce may have downplayed the...um...benefits to the donor."

"Don't remind me. The sex was so good, I can't even imagine." Venci gave a dramatic swoon.

Feired grinned back and laughed. "Yeah, but I don't mind sharing."

Arcturus let out a low growl.

"Did Arcturus tell you, he'd like one of the uniforms in pink?" Willow asked. His face was the wide-eyed picture of innocent, which told Skye it was anything but.

"Willow..." Arcturus growled.

"But everyone said you looked so good in pink." Willow's smile and batting eyes were turned on the bear - obviously with no effect.

Skye looked at the others knowing there must be a story that hadn't been shared.

"Well... It was an accident. I may have turned all of Arc's hair pink..." Rilien's voice was so soft he almost couldn't hear him.

"Accident, my ass!" Arcturus glared at the elf.

"That was pink too!" Greggory totally lost it and clutched his gut as he laughed so hard he started wheezing. Several of the others joined him, and Skye had to wait for someone to calm down and explain.

"It was rather unfortunate." Dillon began, doing a miraculous job of keeping a straight face when Skye knew the elf was laughing inside. "There was a slight disagreement and some hurt feelings between Christos, Rilien, and Arcturus. It may have resulted in a certain bear having all his body hair turned bright pink while his clothes were unavailable. There might have been a chase involving a panther and a naked pink bear- man and a terrified elf-mage. I may have had to intervene to assist in resolution."

Skye knew he shouldn't but he couldn't help it. He laughed. He laughed until tears were rolling down his face. The image of Arcturus's dark rug turned bright pink was both horrifying and hilarious.

"Go ahead, get it out of your system. Everyone else had a good laugh." Arcturus's voice was still coming out more like a growl. "Maybe YOU can get them to stop leaving stuffed pink bears in my room."

Skye looked at Arcturus's glare and the way he had his arms crossed over his chest and tried not to resume laughing.

"I'm sure it was the tension and stress from everything going on. Not to worry, Arc. It isn't the first such spectacle, and I doubt it will be the last." Skye had already picked up on some awkwardness but he also knew he didn't have time to sort it out before they returned to Underhill.

"Skye, you guys should also know that I was probably one of the last to see Lord Eluf's seneschal alive. He set up a meeting for me to help Rebel, the blue who is joining Eluf's staff. He's going to be great by the way. I really liked him. But it was while we were meeting that Raphael and his driver were killed. He was on his way back to retrieve Rebel."

"I'm sorry, Braden. That must have been terrible," Garrett said.

"A little unnerving. The guards were on top of it, and a couple of Eluf's team came to escort Rebel back to the estate. I still had to give a statement and answer questions for the City Guard. Someone from Protectorate also came by later to confirm. I just thought you should know."

"Thank you, Braden. I'm sorry you got caught up in that." Skye kept his face neutral but had also picked up on some other interesting thoughts. "Did you know the vampires who came to escort Rebel?"

"I um...hadn't met either of them before but they were both memorable. Kiawa and Copernum, she was terrifying. Or at least she was until she decided I wasn't a threat. The other guy...I can't explain it but there was something about him."

Skye didn't want to put Braden in an awkward spot and doubted that the dragon had told anyone about his interchange with Eluf's general. "I haven't been close enough to Copernum to know if my magic would notice him."

"But if Braden felt a pull..." River let the statement hang. The wing- mates who'd been with him in Underhill had all come to understand what that likely meant.

"We'll have to wait and see. Thank you, Braden."

A knock sounded at the door before it opened and one of the Imperial Guards leaned in. "Prince Skye, His Majesty sent word that it's time to prepare. You'll be leaving soon."

Skye stood then leaned down to give Garrett a kiss. "Love you."

"Love you too. Be safe and let River protect you if needed."

"Smart guy." River smirked as he waited for Skye to join him.

  • Scene 6 *

Skye and River stepped out of the lift onto the platform and found Prince Argos and four guards waiting. He turned back to Leesai and Jos.

"Thanks, we'll see you when we return. I promise to let you know when we're back safely."

Leesai and Jos both gave a fist to chest salute and turned back to the lift.

That was weird, River mentally said to Skye.

Probably did it because Pater and the other guards are watching. It was a guess on Skye's part, but he thought it was logical.

"Ready?" Prince Argos asked. "I must say you both look good in uniform."

"Thank you," Skye and River said in unison.

"Don't worry, you can trust these guards. May I present Samson, Zexes, Cary, and Gatlin."

Skye gave a nod in greeting. 'Mistral, is it my imagination or does Zexes look a lot like Mica?' Samson was obviously a copper and Cary and Gatlin were both silvers.

'He does. But we already knew the Emperor had a weakness for blonds.'

They entered the tube car and took their seats.

"Nothing to be nervous about, dears. It's about a thirty minute tube ride then we'll take a transport to the secure facility," Prince Argos explained.

Skye sat back and enjoyed the quiet comfort of the luxury car. He didn't expect small talk with the guards present. Argos might trust them, but he wouldn't want anything about Underhill or current circumstances mentioned in front of them.

Skye, you've got to help me figure out how to shield better.

Lost me, Bro. Kwill said you were excellent at shielding. Skye was a little confused.

No, it's this ability to read other's minds. How do you stop it or keep things from leaking through? River asked.

Practice, why? Skye really hoped River wasn't reading the prince.

Two of the guards. One is nervous because he's afraid you won't approve of him hooking up with Leesai-

What? Which one? Skye couldn't help being curious, and if River already invaded their thoughts, he didn't want to add to the violation.

Samson, the bodybuilder copper with the reddish hair.

Wow, he must be brave or stupid. Skye wasn't sure which.

He remembers the sex as being worth it. The blond who refuses to make eye contact is terrified we'll figure out he's been having sex with the Emperor and Prince Argos. Guess he's kinda like their new pet and he seems to like being spit-roasted.

Oh, my God. That's just...shit. I don't know what. I mean I knew Mica...

What? I fried your brain. Imagine getting the images too. I did not need that, River complained.

Tell me about it. So imagine a DMZ or demilitarized zone around you where other thoughts get filtered out. It's not so much a wall as it is a barrier. In my head I imagine fog that prevents their thoughts from getting to me. When there is someone I need to read, I clear the fog and picture them. It's the same concept as building walls. You need to visualize some kind of barrier that you can control.

If we had more time, I'd get Beck or Kwill to help. Thanks. I'm going to work on it.

They went back to being silent, but Skye's curiosity was getting the better of him.

'Mistral, I thought Pater wasn't into men? Why would he and Father bring Zexes into their bed?'

'Maybe he likes men more than he admitted. Darius is a dragon, so not surprising that he'd have the same hunger as his sons. We could ask him,' Mistral said.

'Hell, no. We'll ask Garrett when we get back.' No, just no. He did not want Pater to even think that Skye acknowledged the prince's sexuality.

The tube car slowed and came to a stop. A chime sounded and the four guards stood and went to the door. Moments later it slid open. Two stepped out while the other two remained in the opening.

"Clear," a voice said.

"Almost there." Prince Argos stood and nodded to the opening.

They stepped out onto a dark, deserted platform. The platform was barely more than a concrete apron. The walls appeared to be unpainted concrete as well with a single pair of security doors. There was no signage or markings of any kind. The only illumination was a single light panel over the doors.

"Not the most welcoming station," River muttered.

"That is intentional. You wouldn't even find it if you didn't know it was here. This is a military, not civilian platform." Argos waved toward the door where two of the guards were standing.

As they drew close one of the guards, Gatlin, opened a panel Skye hadn't seen and did something. There was the sound of a motor then several clicks before the doors separated and slowly slid to the sides.

They stepped into another non-descript room that illuminated as they entered. Another set of doors on the opposite wall. Gatlin moved to another panel and waited until the doors behind them slid closed. A gear driven locking mechanism was visible on this side that slowly moved back into place. Once it had stopped and gone silent, the guard did something and the next set of doors opened.

It revealed a long corridor with low-level lighting. They walked for several minutes before reaching yet another set of doors. Gatlin set about opening those and Skye found himself in a large hangar. Several ground and air transports filled the space. One of the ground transports was already running with the doors open and two men in combat gear standing at the ramp.

"That's our ride," Prince Argos said.

"What kind of place are we going to?" River asked.

"A military installation that has facilities for both detention and a full medical lab for research."

"Research?" Skye asked, unsure if he wanted an answer.

Prince Argos turned his head to look at Skye and gave a grin. "Nothing diabolical, I promise. They research alien ailments and work on developing vaccines as well as testing new treatments needed for our soldiers. The Empire has many worlds that are not hospitable to all our races."

"Okay." Skye didn't pick up any falsehood or misdirection, but the idea still made him uneasy.

We aren't the bad guys, are we? River asked Skye.

I sure hope not, River. I sure hope not.

Unlike the tube car, the transport looked just as military-grade on the inside as it did on the outside. Skye sat and pulled the harness down, securing himself on the hard, uncomfortable seat. Similar to the air transports he'd been in, there were no windows.

The ride to their final destination was much rougher than Skye would have expected, and he found himself thankful for the harness that kept him in his seat.

"I'm thinking we aren't in the city," River joked as he held on to his seat.

"Think that's a safe bet." Just as he said it, the transport came to a stop. Moments later it moved on but the ride was smoother. He was about to comment when the transport came to a stop again. This pause took longer but they were soon moving again. It happened several more times before the transport powered down. There was a ping and then someone spoke.

"We have arrived, Your Majesty. Troops will be opening the hatch soon."

"Skye, River." Prince Argos waited until Skye made eye contact. "I think it best if we use your special way of communicating. Assume that someone is always listening."

Whoa, heavy, dude. He's serious, right? He wants us to use our telepathy?

Sure sounded like it. That bothers you more than knowing someone is listening?

Sure. Pater is scary. River gave an audible huff and then unfastened the harness as sounds indicated the hatch was being opened.

Pater, are you sure you're okay with River and I mind-speaking with you?

Of course, son. I asked, didn't I? Prince Argos stood and stretched as the guards moved between him and the opening hatch.

Skye wasn't sure what to expect as he walked down the ramp. It wasn't nearly as glamorous or as well-lit as Hollywood portrayed secret government installations. A lot of dark concrete. The closest thing he could think of was an underground loading dock, but with more guards.

River bumped his shoulder to get his attention and get him moving with the others. They were ushered through some impressive looking security doors. And into a somewhat brighter looking hallway. Skye tried to be observant but there wasn't much to look at. They came to another guarded checkpoint then entered what appeared to be a large lift.

Are we underground? Skye asked.

We are and we'll be going deeper. The main facility is about eighty feet below the surface. The tunnel that brought us in is hidden. Right now, we're about twenty feet below ground level, Prince Argos answered.

Were the wolves that dangerous? River asked.

No. But we needed a place that is not widely known and has the medical facilities if this test is to work. We will be able to check them daily and confirm them as bond-mates here without any information leaking or having to include anyone from the outside. Kleitos will be kept up to date and may check on the subjects himself periodically. We were fortunate that Thillean and Devroe were able to decide on the others quickly enough that they could be delivered here as well. This way, all those you need to change are in one place.

Aren't you afraid they'll tell someone that I did this to them? Skye asked.

We are going to do everything we can to make sure they don't know. Pater turned to look at Skye. You said that it only requires you touch them. Correct? No words or additional contact is needed?

Well...yeah, but I usually talk to them and make sure they know what's happening and what they can expect. I also like to confirm that they're sure. Skye could feel Pater dismissing the idea even before he communicated anything.

No need for any of that. You are doing the shifters a favor. The others have been told that it's an experiment in final rounds of testing. So the non-wolves are all somewhat aware of the potential outcome.

From what you said before, I didn't have the impression that they volunteered, River said. Skye noted that his mental tone was very...careful not to give offense.

You worry too much, River. They chose this of their own free will. Prince Argos turned back around as the lift doors opened.

I'm with you, River. I think that was one of those, not lies but not telling us everything answers. Kinda like they said - you can be sent to the outer rim or you can volunteer to be used as a test subject and maybe be a dragon-mate.

River covered his mouth, but Skye still saw the grin. I was thinking exactly the same. But I got your back. And we can still do a mental check before you make the change. You'll know if they really don't want it, right?

Yeah, I should be able to tell. Not sure what to do about the wolves when they have no idea about what's going on. Skye answered.

"We're not in Kansas anymore," River whispered as they followed the guards out of the elevator.

Skye had to agree. This area looked more in keeping with the Empire and the advanced technology that Skye knew. Sleek, modern, bright and very, very white. A man in a lab coat came toward them with a determined look.

"Prince Argos." The man gave the required bow, but it was quick and without much reverence. "This is wrong! I have to go on official record as objecting to these experiments. There are best practices when introducing unknown alien pathogens. Start with one or two, not the entire test population."

Prince Argos stood silently while the man spewed.

"What if they all react badly, we'll have no subjects left. This substance your people 'discovered' hasn't even been properly analyzed!"

An eyebrow raised, and when the man was silent long enough, Prince Argos spoke. "Dr. Kentzel, you have been officially absolved of any responsibility for these experiments. Your objections have been duly noted and reported to your superiors. Your name will in no way be associated with any failures or successes that result from this work. You are to be commended for raising legitimate concerns; however, this is no longer your responsibility. Why not take a break. You've been working too hard."

"But..."

Skye didn't see how but apparently, some communication had happened as several guards, soldiers, anyway, men in combat gear, surrounded the doctor.

"Please, sir. We have a transport waiting for you."

"But I have work..."

"A well-deserved vacation, Dr. Kentzel. Enjoy." Prince Argos turned and gestured to the Imperial Guards to continue on.

Skye glanced back as the others escorted the confused doctor away.

Everything okay? Skye asked.

Fine, dear. Some people are rather inflexible. We tried reasoning with him. There are several other well-reputed doctors who are more than happy to assist us and take credit for the miraculous discovery.

Skye and River shared a look. 'Mistral, I'm back to thinking Pater is scary.'

'He has a dragon's soul. I like him.'

Storm agrees with Mistral. He thinks Pater wasted his time trying to convince the doctor.

The room they entered next looked like a surgery observation room. One wall was glass overlooking a larger room below filled with equipment. Several comfortable chairs were set near the windows. The military types all left, and the Imperial Guards took up position with two inside the room and two on the outside of the door. Prince Argos tapped his temple, and Skye opened the connection.

**The subjects are being gathered and prepared now. They will be brought one at a time into the procedure room. You will both dress in protective garments like the other attending medics. With those on, no one will recognize you. They will be conscious when they arrive, giving you time to check them to ensure they are not dangerous or spies. While they are being prepared, you can use your magic and touch them. Once done, signal the others, and they will give the subject an injection and then put the person to sleep," Argos explained.

What if we find someone who shouldn't be changed? River asked.

Mind-speak me with what you find. I'll instruct the guard to deal with the subject once they awaken. We'll continue with the fake procedure as if nothing is amiss. Depending on what you discover, they will either find that it was unsuccessful or wake up in a cell.

Are the guards soldiers? They don't look like Imperial Guard, River asked.

They are special ops so soldiers but not your typical ground troop. There's a squad that handles special security issues for this installation. I'll be in touch with their commander throughout the procedures. There is a room where you can change, and I'll have someone take you down to the procedure room. Do you need anything else before we begin?

No, I don't think so. Skye gave a questioning look to River, but his brother just shook his head in response.

It didn't take long to change and find themselves waiting in the sterile room. Now that he was closer, Skye noted that much of the equipment was the same as he'd seen in the palace's infirmary. It only seemed like more since it was all in one place. Skye also realized that some of the equipment and extra med pods were placed to create a visual screen. Two of the armed guards were in the room with them - but not in sight of the subject.

Skye turned as he heard the doors swish open. A couple of people guided a floating gurney into the center of the room and began hooking up sensors to the subject. He opened his shields and gently brushed against the subject's mind. Wolf-shifter. Somewhat terrified but hoping that agreeing to this procedure would get them out of trouble. Then a flittering of recriminating thoughts against their alpha and pack-mates for being stupid. Skye did a deeper dive but didn't find anything concerning. If anything, he decided this was a man worth helping.

He's good, River. You pick up any threats? Skye knew River's natural talent was identifying enemies or those who were a danger to the wing. By extension, Skye assumed that meant "bad" in general.

Nothing. Do it.

Skye lay his hand on the man's chest while one of the techs placed a breathing mask on the man's face. Skye pulled his magic and opened his other sight. A quick burst, and it was done. The wolf-shifter would be able to bond with a dragon.

Skye and River stepped out of the way as the others did their thing. The process repeated six more times before a subject set off warning bells. Skye wasn't sure what it was at first. His mental brush encountered a barrier. Opening his other sight, he saw an extremely bright glow coming from the man's chest that created an aura covering his entire body.

Do you see it? Skye asked River.

Magic of some type. Probably shouldn't touch it. Maybe ask the tech to open his gown.

My gut says let them proceed and put him to sleep first. If we can figure out what's blocking me, I'll still be able to get enough from him even when he's unconscious.

River signaled the team to begin and then they waited until the subject was out.

"Can you either move the gown out of the way or cut it? There's something not right about this one," River said.

The chief medic pulled the sheet back and used something that quickly cut through the cloth covering the wolf-shifter's chest. Underneath was a medallion of some type. To Skye and River's eyes, it glowed brightly with magic.

"Be careful not to touch it, do you have something I can use to pick it up?" River asked.

"Certainly." The medic grabbed a pair of tong-like clamps and held them out for River.

River pulled a fine silver blade out of somewhere and slid it under the chain after he had the medallion clasped in the tongs. Another medic held out an open jar, and he placed the chain and pendant inside before they closed the lid. Skye looked at the blade and from the faint glow assumed it came from Underhill. Maybe one of the ones Gilian gave them?

'But where did he have it hidden?'

'Makes you wonder. Unless he has a sheath, these scrubs don't have pockets,' Mistral responded.

"Thank you." River carefully took the jar and looked at it closely. He glanced up at Skye. Did you learn anything that would help with this?

Skye thought for a moment, realizing that he could use a shielding spell. He pulled his magic and whispered the words, reaching out, he touched the glass, and the jar glowed with a pale green light. He could no longer feel the magic of the jewelry inside.

Now that the amulet was gone, Skye tried to read the man again. He grimaced and pulled Prince Argos into his conversation with River.

Not good. The necklace was a protection or concealment spell of some type. This shifter is one of the leaders. I'm not sure how Tennat missed it. Anytime you can't read someone, you've got to assume they're hiding something. He was involved in planning the attack on Lord Eluf's seneschal as well. He also has some unsavory connections you'll want to look into. You'll want someone to check the amulet as well. They may be able to tell who created it or more about what it was supposed to do.

Thank you, Skye. We'll take care of it. Give the jar to one of the guards.

Skye did so as the shifter was rolled out of the room and the next subject was brought in. Skye and River got through ten more wolf-shifters before the first elf was brought in. They followed the same procedures and by the time they finished had added three elves, a panther-shifter, a lion-shifter and a cougar-shifter to the seventeen wolves.

Skye knew that for any Protectorate run, that was an impressive intake for potential bond-mates. He also didn't doubt that every one of them could bond. How quickly they found a match was a different question.

One of the soldiers escorted them back to the observation room where Skye and River took time to change.

That went better than I expected, River shared.

Much better. Pater was right, when I was in their heads, every one of them was just hoping to survive the ordeal. Most assumed their lives were ruined. Skye paused with his boot half on. It was nice to be able to give them something that would make their lives better. And the 'volunteers' were really hoping it worked. Not sure how they're going to explain when the treatment can't be repeated.

Uh, Skye. You do realize that as long as they can get you to help, they can repeat this as many times as they want. Not saying they will, but they could. And isn't it better to have them think it's some secret alien treatment?

That's a good point. Unless someone uncovers some ancient text that reminds people what the "father dragon" could do.

Pretty sure Pater and Kwill will keep that locked down tight. River waited at the door while Skye finished.

We still don't know what, if anything he found on his home world.

One problem at a time.

They stepped back into the observation room. Prince Argos stood and gave them a big smile.

"Very well done. Now we wait and see what happens."

"You mean test daily to see when the results are proven," River countered.

"Such smart boys. Ready to return to the palace? I'm pretty sure there are some people wanting to make the most of your remaining time here." Prince Argos turned and headed for the door.

  • Scene 7 *

"Short of finding no bad ones. I think that's about as well as it could possibly go." Garrett stood at the doorway to Skye's closet.

Skye looked at the sleep pants Dillon held out. "Nah, not going to need them." He ran his hand over the uniform he'd stepped out of and wondered if he should keep it.

"I did have your leathers cleaned. What do you want me to do with them?" Dillon asked.

Skye grumbled to himself. "Set them out. We'll need to change back into them before we leave. I'm not losing clothes I like just to get into a war of wills with Underhill."

"Underhill cares what you wear?"

"If you value your life, don't ask Venci that question. And yes, I agree with Skye. It's easier for everyone if we wear the leathers for our return," Garrett added.

"Okayyyyy." Dillon did not look impressed.

"Since we only have a few hours before we have to leave, is there anyone who really needs my attention?" Skye asked. "I already told Christos to stop by when we got back."

"Don't know why it didn't occur to me that we'd have such a short time here." Garrett moved over to sit on the bed as Skye and Dillon exited the closet. He pulled back the covers so Skye could slide underneath.

"I think they'd all say they do... but..." Dillon was quiet for a moment. "Maybe Christos. He's been struggling. I think he's taking Arc's rejection pretty hard. Something you're going to have to deal with eventually. The bear is holding back. I think he stuck to just Greggory until Braden got back."

"Braden? I thought for sure he had eyes for Feired," Garrett said.

"Me too. They're just weird around each other. But put Braden near Arc and he gets all growly and his eyes go dark. Then I give them a count down until they decide they need to go do something." Dillon laughed.

"Good for Braden," Skye said. "I'll see what I can do once we're back. Have you mentioned it to Kwill?"

"He picked up on it. Kwill said he'll do what he can but since he spends most of the time in the infirmary, he's not around much. Even the short time he was with us when you returned wore him out. I think he's been sleeping since." Dillon shrugged. "Even Rilien seems to be coping okay and spends time with me, Fiske, Feired, and Kleitos. Christos though...only me or Ril. I think he's taking Willows bonding hard. Since he noticed the bond-mark starting, Willow has ignored the rest of us."

"The other guys love Chris, why doesn't he connect with one of them?" Garrett asked.

"He won't say, and he's never gone for the other guys. It was usually, me, Rilien, or Willow. Leesai has also been teasing him lately, saying she'll 'make a real cat' out of him."

"That's terrifying." Skye shuddered. "I know I need to find someone for her and Gilian too. Now that Bryan has the ranger, Raphael Night Blossom, I'm not sure she'll be getting much from that dragon. He's pretty smitten."

"I'm glad he found someone. Oh, I just remembered, I have something for you." Dillon went to his room and returned with a small leather pouch. "Rilien wanted you to have these."

Skye opened the small bag and spilled out a half dozen brightly colored stones. Each had a glyph carved into them and hummed with magic. "What are they?"

"Message stones. Since you can't go back and forth without triggering the alarms. You can use those to get a message to us. He said you activate them like you would the portal and then say your message out loud. Unfortunately, it can only be about ten words. Then toss it through the portal onto the bridge. Willow will check regularly. Also if we need to get a message to you, there will be a similar stone set at the threshold of the portal."

"That's a great idea." Garret took one of the stones and turned it over in his fingers.

"Reaching through to toss a stone or pick one up shouldn't trigger anything," Dillon added.

A knock sounded at the door before it opened. Jos leaned in. "Christos is here."

"Send him in," Skye called back.

"I can put them with your leathers so you don't forget." Dillon took the bag and the stone from Garrett, returning it and tying the pouch closed. "I was going to spend the night with Rilien if that's okay."

"Sure. I'm not sure we'll see you again before we leave so give me a kiss before you go." Skye held out his arms and pulled Dillon in. "Sorry it was such a short return."

"Ooof," Dillon grunted when Garrett picked him up and squeezed him. Dillon might have said more, but Garrett had his mouth occupied.

"I can come back..." Christos said hesitantly.

"Hell no. Get over here. Dillon was just saying goodbye to Garrett before he left."

Christos sat on the bed beside Skye but stayed on top of the covers. They watched as Garrett and Dillon continued for a bit longer.

"Um... I should go now." Dillon was flushed and out of breath.

"Hey, Dil? We'll make up for this when we get back, okay?" Garrett said.

"I think I'm going to like that." Dillon grinned and gave a brief bow before leaving.

Garrett's dark eyes turned to Christos and he let out a low growl. "Hey, kitten."

Christos looked at Skye with wide eyes and gulped. "Hey?"

"How are you doing, Chris? We really missed you," Skye asked, cupping his cheek.

"Okay."

Skye sighed and opened his mind further to the wing-mate. It didn't take a deep dive to know the panther wasn't okay and seemed to be struggling more with their absence than the others. He didn't know why, maybe it was because of Willow.

'You could use our magic to check his health, but I think it is more mental than physical,' Mistral said.

Skye pulled his magic and checked Christos from head to toe, shushing him when the panther objected. He seemed healthier than ever. He was still thinner than he should be but he had a solid layer of muscle. His hair was rich and silky, his purple eyes bright. Skye closed his eyes to see if he could feel anything.

"Chris, are you upset about something?" Skye asked.

"I wish you didn't have to leave again."

"Anything else?"

"Do you think I'll ever find a mate or have guys look at me like they do the others?" Christos asked in a soft voice.

"Christos, you're beautiful. If you weren't hidden away the men would be all over you."

"But..."

"Being adopted by the Emperor and made a prince does have a downside. You're not just Christos the panther-shifter. Anyone who is familiar with Prince Argos knows he's watching over you like a mother hen. And...if they know my pater, that scares them shitless." Garrett chuckled.

"He's right, Chris. Even the wing-mates are more protective of you. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was worse while we were gone."

"Ugh!" Chris threw himself back on the bed and put his arm over his eyes. "If it weren't for Ril and Dillon, I'd go crazy."

"There's no one at school?"

"Since everything went down with Greggory, the instructors are coming here. And not even before, maybe it's like you said, and they're intimidated by me being a royal."

"We don't have a lot of time before we have to go back. You interested in maybe having some personal time with us?" Garrett asked.

"Does that mean fucking? I really need fucking." Christos turned and got on his knees looking back and forth between Skye and Garrett.

"That was my hope," Skye said.

"Yes!" Christos pulled off his shirt and began sliding out of his pants.

"Whoa, kitten. What gives? Look at you and all those muscles. Damn." Garrett looked up and down the panther's body in admiration.

"Between Master Chen and Leesai, I think they're trying to kill us. Our self-defense classes are how we spend half our days. Not just me, Rilien and Dillon too."

"Well, bring that sexy body over here. My tongue needs to explore." Garrett let out a low growl and stripped off his clothes as well.

"What do you want, Chris?" Skye moved the covers down.

"Everything." Chris climbed on top of Skye and kissed him, then rubbed his cheeks against Skye's.

Garrett let out a low growl, and Skye felt the bed shift as his mate crawled up behind Christos. He felt the panther tremble slightly as Garrett kissed up his spine.

"We're going to take care of you, kitten." Garrett pulled Chris off of Skye and positioned him on his back.

I wish we had more time to do this right, Garrett mind-spoke to Skye.

We're still going to do it right, even if we can't do everything you want. I want him to fuck me this time. Why don't you work on his hole, and I'll get him nice and hard, Skye suggested.

"Uff." Christos grunted when Garrett grabbed the panther's ankles, lifting them back and spreading him wide.

Skye kissed Christos softly, then laid kisses down his jawline, his neck, and onto his chest. Licking the light dusting of dark hair. He took a nipple into his mouth and sucked and bit until it was hard and swollen. When he thought it was as stiff as it would get, he moved to the other.

"Fuck, your hole is so sweet," Garrett mumbled. "I've missed you, kitten."

Christos responded with a whimper and slid his fingers into Skye's hair holding him against his chest as Skye continued to suck. Skye released him and licked down his treasure trail, smiling as Chris's abs tightened. He got to the silky curls and inhaled.

'He is ours. We should take care of him,' Mistral purred.

'And protect him,' Skye thought back.

'Always.'

Skye licked up Christos's shaft then took the shifter's cock into his mouth. It was thicker than he remembered but the taste...perfect. He paused briefly and kissed Garrett who was only inches away. They worked in unison, Garrett getting Christos's hole ready while Skye sucked him.

Skye, move your ass closer. Garrett's hand ran along Skye's side.

Focus on Chris. Skye sent back.

I need to get you slick and open if he's going to get inside you. Move.

Skye grumbled around Christos's cock and scooted around so his ass was closer to Garrett. Garrett's hand slid up his thigh and squeezed his ass cheek before his finger started sliding up and down Skye's crack. He tried not to moan, but just the brush of Garrett's finger had him pushing back and spreading his knees wider.

Love how responsive you are for me. Garrett's finger slid inside, and Skye moaned. He really appreciated that his body now produced slick for his mate. It saved a lot of time and trouble, and while it would be Christos inside him, Garrett would make sure he was ready.

Skye sucked harder as Garrett began working a second finger into his hole. Skye had kept their link open so they could better coordinate in satisfying Christos. He could taste Christos and feel his walls squeezing around Garrett's tongue as it slid deep inside, warming and opening up the shifter.

He's almost ready on this end. Where's his head? Garrett asked.

Focusing his mind on Christos's thoughts and feelings, Skye knew the panther was more than ready. He was still with them, but the need and lust were at the forefront of his thoughts. All their wing-mates were responsive to their combined ministrations, but Christos was happiest when it was both of them.

He's ready, love. And so am I.

Garrett's fingers went deeper and hit that perfect spot making Skye moan. Yeah, you are. When we get back to Underhill, I'm going to fuck you senseless. Then, when you're all warm and happy, I'm going to have the other wing-mates fuck you, one after the other.

Garrett. Even's Skye's mind-voice came out in a needy whimper.

I know what you need, baby, Garrett pulled away and gripped the base of Christos's cock, forcing Skye to back off. "You're ready, Chris. I'm going to fuck you but not until this cock is in Skye's ass."

"What?"

"You in the middle, kitten."

Skye rolled onto his back and pushed a pillow under his ass, then spread his legs. "Give it to me, Christos, I want your cock inside me."

"Shouldn't I..." Chris started, looking down at Skye, his eyes dark with lust.

"He's ready for you." Garrett guided Christos into position, even lining his cock up to Skye's ass.

"Oh, goddess..." Christos moaned, and Skye's eyes squeezed shut as he felt the stretch of Christos's dick sliding into him.

"All the way, Chris. Give me every bit of it. I want you to fuck me. I want to feel you."

Christos nodded and pushed until he was flush against Skye. Garrett stood over his shoulder, running his hands over the shifter to help ground him.

Skye felt the heat of Christos's hole as Garrett lined himself up. You with me? Garrett asked.

Ye...yes. He feels so good.

Just wait until you can feel how tight this cute ass is at the same time.

Closing his eyes again and steeling himself for the onslaught of sensations, Skye felt Christos's tight ring squeezing Garrett as he pushed inside. So warm and snug.

The panther stilled as Garrett pressed into him, forcing Christos all the way into Skye.

"It's too much," Christos panted.

"Give yourself a minute, then start moving," Garrett said.

Garrett pulled back a little to give Christos space to thrust. Skye could still feel the outer ring snuggly wrapped around Garrett's shaft. Just as he was thinking about the sensation, Christos pulled back and thrust into him. Feeling both Christos inside him as well as Christos squeezing Garrett took away Skye's ability to think. All he could manage was to feel.

"Faster," Garrett ordered.

Skye knew his mate had taken control. He was pretty sure from the sensations that Garrett had a grip on Christos's hips, pushing him into Skye then impaling him on his cock. Christos was in a fuck stupor, so caught up in the sensations he didn't even try to fight it.

'So good, Mistral.'

'Our wing-mate does not need Leesai to make him anything. He is already a man and will bring much pleasure to our brothers.'

Skye pulled back from feeling Garrett's sensations and focused on his own. He liked all positions for sex but had been on the giving end more often than not lately. He always enjoyed sharing Christos with Garrett, and the panther was giving him exactly what he needed. He may not have a flutter, but he knew his body would absorb every bit of essence that Christos gave him.

"Faster," Christos pleaded.

The cry was enough to bring Skye back to himself and realize he needed to draw his magic. He concentrated, pulling it to him, then reaching out and combining Garrett's power with his own. He spun it together holding it, ready for when Christos's orgasm hit.

"You can fuck me harder...please." Christos's body slammed into Skye with each thrust, bringing them both closer and closer to the edge.

"I'm going to fill you with so much dragon seed, you're going to smell like me and everyone will know I fucked you, kitten."

"Yes! Yes!" Christos's body tensed, and Skye released the magic, letting it fill the shifter as his and the panther's orgasm struck. "AHHHHHHH." Christos cried out as his body shook from the intensity.

"Filling up your pretty hole, Christ. Can you feel my cum pumping into you? Your panther knows he belongs to us, doesn't he?"

"Yesssss."

Ease up a little, love. His panther is so close to the surface if we do much more he's going to shift.

Garrett chuckled, and Skye felt Garrett press his body against Christos, sandwiching him between them in an embrace. He opened himself to Garrett's sensations and realized his mate was still buried deep inside their wing-mate. Little gyrations of his hips sending aftershocks through Christos's body.

"Goddess, I missed this. So good," Christos whispered, burying his face in Skye's neck and inhaling.

"We'll be back soon, and we can do it lots more to make up for being gone," Skye promised.

Christos laughed, and Skye felt his body shake. "I'm going to hold you to that."

The panther took another deep breath and relaxed as if he were trying to melt into Skye's body.

Um, I think we wore him out. Skye realized that Christos was now dead weight, and his breathing was deep and regular. He felt movement, and then Garrett was lifting Christos and getting him settled onto the bed.

"He's so beautiful," Garrett whispered as he pulled the covers over the panther.

"Hard to believe it's the same Christos we rescued, isn't it?" Skye said.

"We'll come back as soon as we can." Garrett was quiet a moment. "We've only got a couple of hours. Let's take a quick shower and at least get in a nap before we have to leave. I don't think Chris is up to any more."

  • Scene 8 *

Skye wiggled and squirmed as he tried to get his hard dick tucked into the leather pants. Garrett's hands slid up the inside of his thighs, his body pressed against Skye's back and the heat of his breath tickling his ear.

"Stop! If you keep getting me horny, I'm never going to get dressed."

"Hm... but I do love how you look in leather. It makes me so hot for you, babe." Garrett turned Skye around and kissed him.

A knock sounded briefly before River and Nik stepped into their suite.

"Ready?" River called out.

"Almost," Skye called back, pushing away from Garrett and grabbing his vest.

"You know you have a panther in your bed?" River asked.

Skye looked over and smiled at Christos's sleeping cat form. He'd shifted in his sleep.

"Don't bother him. He's comfortable," Garrett said.

"I'm not sure if I'm ready to go back," Nik said.

Another quick knock sounded at the door before Mica and Venci joined them.

"Lovely, looks like it's leather for everyone," Venci grumbled.

"I wasn't going to fight it, and I didn't want any of the stuff I like disappearing," Skye finished lacing the vest and saw Venci scowling at him.

"I'll have you know I already 'lost' several of my favorite things to Underhill."

"Sorry." Skye couldn't leave just yet. He crawled back onto the bed and wrapped his arms around the huge cat, pressing his nose into the soft fur. "Love you, Chris. I promise we'll be back."

The panther let out a grumbly huff.

"I know, but we have to do it this way. Maybe talk to Kleitos if it takes us a while. He'd take really good care of you." Skye switched to telepathy so as not to have the others hear. Besides that, he's a pretty awesome lover, and he's got as big a cock as Garrett.

Christos began to purr and flicked his tail.

"Take care of yourself." Skye kissed the panther again and ran his face along the cat's cheek.

"Can't put this off any longer, Skye," Garrett reminded him.

Taking a deep breath, Skye joined the others and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway. They hadn't gone far when he heard soft footsteps behind him. He turned and saw Prince Argos coming their way.

The prince pulled Garrett into a hug, then Nik, River, ending with Skye. "Be careful and come back to us soon. I'm sorry we can't give you more of a sendoff. You know all your wing-mates would be here if we let them. But this is best."

"We understand." Even with most of the servants given the night off, it was too risky to have a large group gathered.

"And check back to see if we've left any stones." Prince Argos pushed Skye's hair out of his eyes and smiled. "I believe in you."

Skye hugged Prince Argos again and ignored his watery eyes. With a nod, he pulled back, and they quietly made their way to the garden.

"A lot more peaceful than when we arrived," River said softly.

"That's a good thing," Nik added.

They arrived at the torii gate at the end of the bridge, and Skye reached for his magic, quickly feeling the presence of the gate and picturing themselves returning to the time they left. A glow spread up the sides and the air shimmered before they were looking back into Underhill.

"Venci, you're up first," Mica said. "Then you, Garrett."

"And back to Underhill we go." Skye let out a sigh and followed his mate through the portal.
