Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 53: The Stag by Tripp Savidge

  • Scene 1 *

Skye stretched out on the rock and let the sun's warmth soak in. He'd done his best to ignore that the light didn't look quite right, the trees were strange, and that sky was more purple than blue. Other than that and the foreign sounds of animals and birds he'd never heard before, he could pretend he was back on Earth.

Mistral snorted.

"Don't you want to shift and stretch your wings?" Gilian asked from beside him.

"Not allowed. I had to promise I'd stay on the ground and with you before River and Mica would let me out of the hold," Skye said without opening his eyes.

"And don't you dare step off that rock," Bryan said from somewhere nearby.

Gilian laughed. "That must have been before I came into the room. Maybe if you stopped disappearing, they wouldn't be so paranoid."

"None of those were my fault." Skye didn't like the whine that came out in his voice.

"Uh-huh. How'd you convince River to let you out of his sight?" Gilian asked.

"Quanta insisted he do more training this afternoon. Venci, Garrett, and Kuai are there too. I'm a little worried that Mattekin didn't show. Quanta said he wasn't feeling well." Skye thought back to when he'd checked on the druid and somewhat assumed the visions Underhill had sent might have made for a sleepless night.

"Maybe the visions are getting to him. A lot of the elves can't stop talking about it. You know they came again last night?" Gilian said.

"I didn't. The same as before? None of the wing mentioned them." Skye opened his eyes and turned to look at Gilian.

"That's because, other than me, most of the wing was up all night satisfying Jhaeros or Arnak. I blocked out as much as I could, but damn, is it getting tough." Gilian picked up a leaf and began playing with it.

"I'll try to figure something out for you, I promise, Gil. So the others- what kind of vision?"

"More of the same. My friend said hers was pretty explicit. Pretty much showed her that if she didn't claim the guy she's been crushing on and stop playing coy, she'd lose him."

"Anyone you're crushing on?" Skye asked.

"Please. You know I don't need a man in my life or my bed."

Gilian's glare didn't fool Skye. Even with the sour look, she was stunning. He couldn't understand why she didn't have every available elf trying to get her attention.

"I know that's what you want everyone to think. And I believe you when you say you don't want some foppish elf prince who's more concerned that you not be prettier than he is. But you do prefer men in your bed, and I think you'd love to have a bonded mate-type relationship."

"Says you," Gilian harrumphed.

"Actually, says you. You'd be amazed how much you guys leak. I don't have to read you to know what you're thinking. So what do you want?"

Gilian crumpled the dead leaf in her hands and stared as the pieces drifted away on the breeze. "I want a dragon mate like the others. Not a prince or a royal, a solid, practical man who doesn't freak out because I might be more deadly than he is. A man who looks at me like Garrett looks at you." She turned to look at Skye with tears in her eyes, a strand of her long auburn-brown hair blowing across her face. "But that's not going to happen, is it? I can't have a life-bond or carry dragonlings, and that's not something you can fix."

"Part of that's true. But you can still fall in love and have children. I'd also be able to enable any of your male children to mate with a dragon. I'm not sure what my magic would do to you."

"Would you try it?" Gilian asked.

"What if it went wrong or I hurt you somehow?"

"And if I think it's worth the risk? Would you at least consider it?"

"I will." Skye didn't like the idea, but he couldn't deny Gilian the hope.

"Venci being trained to use magic... I bet that will be interesting," Gilian said, changing the subject. She pulled a small elvish dagger from her boot and began tossing it and spinning it through her fingers.

"Guaranteed. Too bad you weren't there to hear him when he found out. I'm not sure why he thought he wouldn't be included." Skye sat up and wrapped his arms around his knees.

"I bet. Maybe they can teach him a spell that lets him color-match his armor."

Skye laughed. "I'm sure he'll ask. Why didn't the mages test you? Don't all elves have magic?"

Skye cringed when Gilian turned her "you're so stupid" look on him. "We 'are' magic, but only some elves have the ability to spell cast. Most, but not all, inherit special talents or abilities but not mage powers."

"Can I ask what your gift is?" Skye watched as a dragonfly-like insect landed a few feet away. It would never be mistaken for the ones he grew up seeing. This one was about two feet long with a neon-blue body and iridescent gossamer wings. I really hope it's not carnivorous, he thought, seeing the faceted eyes turn to him.

"Tracking and stealth. I didn't choose to become a ranger on a whim. You have to have those talents to even be considered. I also have more dexterity, and I'm better with a bow than most. Raphael is the same."

"And blades... I guess that makes sense." The dagger was making him nervous as it spun in the air, over and over. But his other option was watching the huge dragonfly, which seemed to be inching closer. Maybe I could give it a little nudge to make it fly away? "Do you know what Dillon's talent is?"

"Sex," Gilian said without missing a beat.

"No..." She has to be kidding, right? But I didn't detect a lie or falsehood, Mistral. I wasn't 'reading' her, but I should be able to tell...and her face isn't giving away any clues.

Gilian burst into laughter and fell back on the rock, kicking her feet into the air before she sat up again. Fortunately, she'd slid the dagger back in place. "Oh, that was worth it! Your face!"

"But you weren't lying," Skye objected.

"No, but I'm an elf. We are the masters of partial truths. And Dillon's talents do help with sex."

Skye glared at her but refused to stoop to pulling the rest out of her head.

'He is very good at sex,' Mistral supplied helpfully.

"Dillon used to scare the life out of me when he was young. His gift is speed and agility. Most elves have more than humans, but Dillon is far beyond what's considered normal. He can climb a tree like a monkey and run through the canopy faster than I can cross an open field. He'd do that to get away from me, and I'd watch in horror as he ran the branches leaping from tree to tree. He started doing that almost as soon as he learned to walk. If he didn't want to be caught, you had to wait him out. There was no point in chasing him."

"That's scary. But, wait. How does that help with sex?"

Gilian rolled her eyes. "Dillon is 'extremely' flexible and has amazing stamina."

"Ohhhh." Skye hoped his face wasn't as red as it felt.

Gilian held out a hand and put the other to her lips, telling Skye to be silent. She stood and turned, looking into the forest and down at the stream that ran below the rocks they were on. The tree line on the opposite side of the water came almost to the shore.

I think it's an animal, Corbin mind-spoke.

Other side of the stream and to the south, Bryan added. Odd, but it doesn't smell like food. There are too many weird scents here to be sure.

Skye couldn't see either of his guards but knew they were both close by, hidden in the thick forest.

It's large, and from what I hear, four legs, sounds more like hooves than paws. Skye, can you do a quick scan? Gilian asked.

Skye closed his eyes and reached out with his mind. The connection to the wing-mates came first. Surprisingly, he found Bram and Noud next, then Raphael, then the others he knew well. Once his brain accounted for those he expected, it started noticing "others," so many others. By the feel, he guessed fairies, sprites, and maybe nymphs. There was a different presence that stood out and was moving closer... Mattekin? Mistral, am I imagining this?

'No, I sense him too. There's a slight pull to it, and he feels...other. Maybe he's in his shifted form?' Mistral said.

I think it may be Mattekin, Skye sent to the others, and if it were a shifter, that would explain why Bryan didn't think the creature smelled like prey.

We'll stay alert. Don't take any chances, Skye. Not everything here in Underhill is friendly. I'm assuming it's deadly until proven otherwise, Gilian warned as she drew her bow.

Um, maybe don't shoot the new potential wing-mate, Skye sent.

Trust me, Gilian responded as she moved to where she had a better line of sight.

That was when Skye heard movement in the undergrowth. Seconds later, birds chirped and scolded as something disturbed them, sending them into the air. Skye held his breath, watching. Now that he'd identified him, Mattekin was easier to follow, but he still wasn't prepared for the creature that stepped out of the forest.

Wow. Did you know he was a stag shifter? Gilian asked, lowering the bow but not un-nocking the arrow or putting it away.

Stag? That's what that is? Skye asked in disbelief. The creature was unlike any deer or elk he'd ever seen and had no resemblance to a moose. The beast looked like what you might get if you crossed a Clydesdale with an elk. The rack had to be at least six feet across. And the body was muscled with a dark brown dappled coat. His legs were also much thicker, with longer contrasting fur at the bottom, covering his large hooves.

It would make sense. He said he was raised among the fae, and they revere the stag, Gilian added.

The stag raised his head as if sniffing the air before he lowered it to the water and drank.

You sure that's Mattekin? Corbin asked.

Skye concentrated and found the druid's mind easily, though at the moment, his stag seemed to be in charge. I'm sure.

The stag raised his head again, pawing at the ground and let out a loud bugle-like sound.

Does he know we're here? Gilian asked.

I don't think so. His stag thinks he smells something good and wants to come closer. But from what he's thinking, the human side isn't connecting it with us. Stay still, and I think he'll move on. It's freaking Mattekin out.

That's why he dropped dick? Gilian conjectured - the humor coming through in her mind voice.

The stag let out another bellow and turned, leaping into the undergrowth and running away.

He's gone, Bryan confirmed.

"Well, that was interesting. I guess they can't fight the magic no matter what form," Gilian said.

"Yeah." Skye stood and stretched, fighting the urge to follow Mattekin. He figured that if Mattekin was freaking out about everything, then it was very logical to shift and spend time in his other form. He knew the man was not ready. Shifting and letting Mistral take over normally helped calm Skye and put things into perspective. Though he had to admit that the magic pull was strong enough there might not be anything that would help. It made Skye uncomfortable enough that he had to assume it was painful for the druid.

"The place where they're holding the celebration. Do you know if it's near here?" Skye asked as he looked around. He still couldn't see Corbin or Bryan. Guys, I think we're going to explore some. Do you want to move in?

"It's back toward the hold but not far; why?" Gilian asked.

Corbin and then Bryan stepped out of the forest and waited at the edge of the rocks.

"Just curious. I'm kind of expecting that's where the vision will play out. I heard the delea grove wasn't far from it either. I wondered if I'd pick up anything." Skye climbed off of the rock platform and joined the others at the tree line. "Gilian, do you know where the farms are or more specifically, where my grandmother's house is?"

"I know how to get to the farms, but I don't know which one is your grandmother's. We'd have to ask. It isn't close, but if you want to explore some more before we return to the hold, I can show you where they're setting up for the festival." Gilian began leading them through the thick undergrowth and into the forest.

"Hm, I guess. When I said I'd go back to see Grandma B, it never occurred to me to ask how to find the place, and since her presence was being hidden, I'm not sure who it is safe to ask."

"You're not going to like my answer, but in Underhill, you are usually best served by heading in the direction and letting Underhill guide you. The farms are South of the hold. Are you going to take River?"

"I'd like to. I wasn't expecting that Quanta would have him training with his magic every day. I thought we'd both be done at lunch and could try finding her. Today would have been good since Jhaeros and Revali were tired enough they didn't want to go out."

"Jhaeros I understand, considering he didn't get much sleep. Why was Revali tired?" Gilian asked.

"He was a bit distracted by Skye and the wing's activities. The bond is still new, and I'm afraid we overloaded the poor guy," Corbin said. "Remember how intense it was at first? Add that to Underhill's magic and Jhaeros's enthusiasm."

"Poor thing," Gilian commiserated. She stopped and turned back to look at Corbin. "Shit, did someone help him? He probably was so worked up from the feedback he couldn't think. The rest of us have had a lot more time to adjust."

Gilian's mental image of how she coped was not what Skye expected, and it took all of his self-control not to react. He wasn't trying to read her thoughts; it just came through-unwelcome and unbidden.

'Who knew elves were so adept at making magical sex toys?' Mistral chuckled while Skye returned his focus to the conversation.

"I'm pretty sure Chaz and Venci helped him let off some steam," Bryan snorted.

"I feel bad. I didn't even think of shielding the wing since so many were going to be...you know, taking part. Once he's feeling up to it, I think it would be good for the guys to take Revali out for another flight. He was used to flying every day."

"Hey, don't worry about it. Pretty clear that Jhaeros got exactly what he wanted, and Revali might have been a little overwhelmed, but there was a big smile on his face at breakfast. I think all of the shifters need some time in their other skin." Gilian held a large fern back so Skye could duck underneath.

"Venci sure seemed impressed with Jhaeros," Corbin laughed.

Skye knew they were getting close when he both heard and sensed a number of elves nearby. They had a very different feel from those minds he'd sensed in the forest. Corbin pushed in front, keeping Skye behind him as Bryan followed. Moments later, Gilian led them into a large clearing where a number of elves were putting up tent-like structures and stringing garlands and other decorations.

"And you said the delea grove is close?" Corbin asked, looking around the area.

"There's a path on the far side of the clearing that leads to the grove. But I'll warn you, once you enter the grove, you can't find the path back until morning."

Skye remembered that part vividly.

"Have you ever..." Bryan started to ask.

"No. Most elves do their very best to avoid the grove. Usually the ones who end up there don't do so willingly. There are protective wards around it to warn you that you're getting close. Unfortunately, they seem to fail when Underhill wants you in the grove."

"Doesn't surprise me at all," Skye muttered.

"There are legends that it once helped with fertility, but as far as I know, that hasn't worked in a very long time," Gilian said.

"Hm...I'd be careful about assuming that now." Skye tried to see if he could sense anything from the clearing. There was nothing out of the ordinary. "With the heartstone healed and the magic returning, that may have changed. I would strongly advise that if we get pulled into the grove, you run the other way."

"You don't have to tell me twice," Gilian grumbled.

"Are you sensing anything about the clearing?" Corbin asked.

"No. Nothing out of the ordinary. I sense a lot of minds just on the edge of the tree-line in addition to the elves and brownies setting up. They seem to be curious and watching," Skye said.

"You do realize that Willow and Teak are both unusual for their kind. Most fairies are very timid and don't like to show themselves. That's why you don't see them in the hold. They prefer to be out here."

"So the hold is mainly for the elves?" Bryan asked.

"Open your eyes, Bryan. Most elves consider all the other fae 'lesser' and not worthy of their time. That's how we got into this mess and why I didn't blink twice at walking away from the court. The others you have seen in the hold are mostly servants," Gilian explained.

"But everyone has been nice to us," Bryan countered.

Gilian stopped and turned around to glare at Bryan. Skye thought maybe his wing-mate should hide given the eye roll and expression on Gilian's face. "That's because you're with Prince Skye, dufus, you have more magic than most elves, and oh, yeah, you can turn into a dragon and eat them. A few may have realized that without help, we're close to extinction, but I wouldn't count on any mass awakening."

"Oh," Bryan muttered.

Don't feel bad, Bryan. It took me a while to see it too. There are 'some' good ones, and we've got Underhill on our side, sort of, Skye mind-spoke to Bryan.

Your idea of being on our side needs some work, Bryan responded.

  • Scene 2 *

Skye followed Corbin, watching closely where the man put his feet. He'd much rather watch his ass, but the last time he got distracted, he'd almost face-planted. How does Gilian know where we're going, Mistral? I sure as hell don't see a path.

'It's her talent, remember. She's also been coming to Underhill all her life. Maybe since we're close to the hold, she knows the way by instinct,' Skye's dragon responded.

Skye had gotten past the point of being afraid and could even appreciate the strange beauty. Of course it helped that Gilian had explained that most of the vegetation wasn't out to kill them, and she'd point out anything dangerous.

A flash of color caught his eye, and he remembered to stop this time before looking for it. Um...birds? I guess. They were as colorful as any tropical rain-forest parrot, but the sounds were more like ethereal songbirds. As he stared up at the canopy, a face peeked around one of the massive tree trunks. It was the briefest of glimpses, but he knew he didn't imagine it.

'Likely a tree nymph,' Mistral suggested.

"You okay?" Bryan asked from behind Skye.

"Yeah, sorry. I was looking at the birds and thought I saw someone."

Gilian turned back to them and looked up into the trees. "More of them than usual. But since the portal's closed, they had to already be here. Maybe with cleaning the magic, they're more active?"

"They could also be curious about you," Corbin said. Even when there was no apparent threat, Corbin always seemed to be on edge, ready for anything.

"Very possible. The brownies are the worst gossips. I'm sure they've reported all your adventures," Gilian laughed and turned to lead them onward.

"Great," Skye muttered, looking apprehensively into the canopy. Mistral, you think there's a way to make sure the nymphs know I'm not interested? You know, without having to explain it personally.

'I don't think nymphs would grasp the concept,' Mistral said.

You're probably right.

"Anyone else think the forest feels different than when we were looking for the portal? I don't know...maybe like...more alive?" Bryan asked.

Skye didn't even have to think about that one. He could feel the magic vibrating, and if he opened his other sight, everything had a sparkling shimmer.

"Definitely," Corbin said in a tone that indicated he thought it wasn't a good thing.

"I don't know that it's bad, Corbin. Underhill seems to be healing itself. The first time I came here, you could see death and decay trying to creep in. Now, it's gone, and everything is lush and alive," Skye replied.

"Not to be difficult, but I'm with Corbin. It makes me nervous. I've been coming to Underhill all my life, and it's never been like this." Gilian didn't bother turning around or stopping, continuing to march on.

Skye reached out and touched the rough bark on one of the massive trees. The area where he touched glowed with a golden light. Do you feel it, Mistral? It's like the magic is coursing through the tree. I think this is how it is supposed to be. It still reacts to us, but more as though it welcomes our touch.

'It feels right,' Mistral agreed. 'It reminds me of how the heartstone reacts.'

"Uh...should you be doing that?" Bryan asked suspiciously as he moved in closer.

"It's fine, Bryan. The magic likes us." Skye pulled his hand away and moved to catch up with the others. Skye didn't miss the skeptical look Bryan gave the tree or how he moved a few steps farther away before passing.

When they were finally entering the rough cave entrance to the hold, Skye let out a sigh of relief. He'd admit to being paranoid that Underhill would divert them and not let them find their way back.

Gilian stopped when they were all in the tunnel and waited for them to close the distance. "You pick up anything from the others?"

Skye closed his eyes and opened himself to the bonds he shared with his wing-mates. It still seemed odd to feel Revali and Jhaeros, but he knew that would pass in time. He did his best to keep his mental touch light so as not to disturb any of them.

"Magic lessons are still in full swing. The wards and shielding they have up are making it a little harder to get details, but I can tell that much. Mica is in the grand hall teaching Teak, Revali, and Jhaeros basic self-defense with Chaz and Jayce's help."

"Sad, but they're going to need it," Corbin said. "It sucks they can't just have a peaceful, happy life after what they've been through."

"We'll try to give them as much as we can. You know my grandparents are going to spoil them rotten."

"If Prince Argos doesn't kill us all," Bryan muttered.

"I'm trying not to think about that possibility. He knows I don't have any control over who my magic chooses, right?" Skye was a little anxious about bringing home more damaged young men who needed socialization, an education, and some serious TLC.

"He's been supportive so far. I figure if he can handle Willow, Jhaeros and Revali won't get more than a raised eyebrow," Corbin said.

"Resettling the dark fae might be a different matter," Gilian added.

"Yeah, but it's not my fault," Skye pointed out. He did not appreciate the laughter he got in response.

When Gilian stopped laughing, she gave Skye a serious look. "If we've got time to kill, I think you should practice your blade work. I'll grab some practice blades so you don't hurt yourself."

"Gee, thanks," Skye grumbled. He wasn't that bad, maybe not as good as Kuai, but he'd passed all the tests, and even Master Chen had said he was decent. He ought to know, having been an assassin and all.

'The Master Assassin,' Mistral added.

  • Scene 3 *

Skye slid down the wall and closed his eyes. He just needed a minute. Everything hurts, Mistral.

'Yeah, but we whooped her ass.' Mistral had absolute glee in his voice, and Skye could picture his dragon prancing with pride.

"Goddess," Gilian sighed as she dropped to the floor beside him. "I'm really sorry I underestimated you."

"I did okay?" Skye wasn't above fishing for compliments.

Gilian opened an eye and still managed to glare. "I knew you'd trained with blades, but it wasn't something we focused on at the Academy. How?"

"Oh, it wasn't there. Prince Argos brought in Master Chen to train River and me." You ever notice that Gilian glares a lot?

'She needs sex. Real sex with a dragon, preferably two, who've got really big-'

I got it, Mistral. No need to be crude.

Gilian sat up and turned to him. "The former Master Assassin? The same one who set up our training at the Academy?"

"Yeah, him. I really thought he was a total prick when we started, but we eventually worked things out. I'm not going to say it was fun, but I did learn a lot." Skye heard Mistral snicker in the background.

"No wonder." Gilian pushed back against the wall again and closed her eyes. "Skye... why would the Prince have an assassin train you?"

"He wanted River and me to be able to protect ourselves and our mates. I guess that even if you surround yourself by bad-ass guards, sometimes someone still slips through. Prince Argos may have mentioned a few personal experiences of needing to take out an intruder. Even when we started at the Academy, Master Chen would still have private sessions with River and me. I don't think most of the guard knew. I guess Chen will insist on starting up again when we get back." If we get back.

"But assassins aren't about self-defense; they are usually on the offense and take out the enemy first."

Skye still felt squeamish about the whole thing but knew there wasn't any point in sugar-coating the truth. "Pater says sometimes you need to be proactive."

Gilian snorted and cracked her eye open again. "Proactive?"

"He...uh...knows all about our gifts. Since we can usually identify our enemies before they tip their hands, he pointed out that we could save lives and our people a lot of pain by taking care of things before they escalate."

"How about you let your wing help you with that? I can feel how uncomfortable it makes you. You're vibrating with angst, and I don't think it's in you to be that proactive."

"I tried that argument. It didn't get me very far."

"And River?"

"He thinks I'm being a wuss. But he said he wasn't worried because he knows I'd do what I had to, even if I hated it."

"You would, but maybe if you let us use our skills, you wouldn't have to. Pretty sure that's why you've collected this odd group of wing-mates. Maybe you need to think about that."

"My head knows...honest." Skye could feel Gilian's skepticism even if she didn't say anything. "But I hate putting any of you in danger if I can do it myself."

"That's not going to work. I think we need to talk about this as a wing. Don't misunderstand me; I have no doubts you 'can' do it. I've never sparred with anyone who was faster than me with knives. And Goddess, but you are good."

"Thanks."

"But. We are much stronger as a team and working together," Gilian said.

'She's right, and you know it as well as I,' Mistral said in Skye's mind. 'It's no different than putting Mica in charge of the guards. Each of them has unique gifts. We just have to figure out what they are and how best to use them.'

"Mistral agrees with you," Skye admitted.

"Well, he is the smarter of the two of you," Gilian teased.

Skye huffed and heard footsteps approaching. He debated opening his eyes, but it took so much energy. He used his mind instead and identified Rafael and Bram.

"Are you two okay?" Raphael asked.

"Embarrassed, but I'll recover. Skye and I were practicing hand-to-hand blade work, and he might have destroyed me," Gilian admitted.

"You? Goddess, that's...wow...sort of scary," Raphael said.

"I think he's got to have some elf in him. No human could move that fast," Gilian said.

Skye opened his eyes and turned to her in surprise.

"Well if he doesn't, I'm sure we could arrange it," Raphael smirked.

"Pretty sure you'd have a long list of volunteers," Bram added.

"Ha ha, no seriously, do you have any elves in your family history, Skye?" Gilian asked.

"Not that I know of. I'm sure the medics would know from all the tests and bloodwork they did, but neither they nor Prince Argos shared anything. Other than confirming that Lord Eluf was an ancestor."

"Anyone who looks at the two of you together could figure that out," Gilian retorted.

"Wait. You're related to the Master Vampire?" Raphael squeaked.

"What? You live under a rock, Raphael? It was all over the news feeds," Gilian said.

"I haven't been outside the fae kingdom much, and you know they don't allow technology or any of the news from the Empire to slip through."

Gilian stood slowly and stretched. "You ought to get out more. You too, Bram. Not going to meet many hot dragons in the fae kingdom."

Skye accepted Gilian's proffered hand and stood. He realized Raphael was anxious. "Was there something you two needed?"

Raphael's anxiety spiked even more, and he glanced around nervously. The grand hall was big enough that the others practicing were not close. "I had this dream last night..."

Skye sighed.

"I'm supposed to stay close to you," Raphael spat out in a rush.

"Was that in the dream? Was there any more? Any specifics of something you need to do?" Skye thought it odd since most of the others had rather explicit visions of what they should expect. He watched Raphael's face, but Skye had his shields up so as not to accidentally pick up thoughts. Even when Skye shielded, he still got strong emotions and the occasional leak.

Raphael's face turned red, and he dropped his eyes. "Not really. Something important is going to happen, and I need to be nearby when it does."

Skye knew immediately that the ranger was lying. Whatever happened in the vision, Raphael thought it was very important. Skye considered for a moment and decided it didn't really matter. Most likely, Underhill wanted Skye to change Raphael so he could be a dragon's mate, though he wasn't sure why that would embarrass the elf when Skye had already seen him naked with more than one wing-mate's dick in his ass.

"Are you okay with being changed to be able to be a bond-mate? That seems to be the most common vision, but I wouldn't do it if it's not what you wanted."

"Oh, yeah, that was it, and yes, I've never been more certain of anything." Raphael didn't meet Skye's eyes.

A partial lie that time, Mistral. There's still something he's holding back. "Of course you can stay with us. I somewhat expected you to but assumed you wanted to be with friends. You don't have other duties you have to worry about?"

"I was assigned to your team. My orders haven't changed other than helping Lady Telawynn when she's asked. I didn't think it was a problem since you're not going anywhere and you've got more than enough guards. And when we returned, I assumed you'd only want your wing with you."

"Hey, it's okay. That was fine, though I do consider you as part of the team. And if you'd asked about helping Lady Telawynn, I'd have told you to do the same. We're sort of killing time anyway. But if it would help to stick close, you're welcome." Skye turned to Gilian. "I need to get cleaned up, and we should have time before the others finish up. We can see if Corbin and Bryan will come with me so you can do the same."

"Great idea. I'll check," Gilian said.

"You know it would be simpler if you took one of the rooms with us," Skye called as she walked over to where Bryan and Corbin were sparring.

She stuck her hand up and flipped him off without ever turning around. Well, that wasn't very nice, and how'd she even learn that? It's not exactly a universal gesture.

'Probably from River. He uses it all the time and frequently with us,' Mistral suggested.

Skye waited for Corbin and Bryan to join him before walking back to their rooms. Their suite looked mostly the same as it had when Skye first arrived, but Underhill had added additional bedrooms, and the gathering room had expanded. There was now room for all of his wing to find a seat and be together. There was even a table and chairs that Venci had been using as a desk while he worked on the ideas for re-homing the dark fae.

"You were looking good, Skye. I might have held my breath a few times, but the two of you... Father Dragon, remind me never to go up against either of you with a knife," Bryan said.

"I almost never have blades, but I agree, don't piss off Gilian. She's like Kuai with sharp things tucked in places you don't even want to know."

Corbin chuckled, but Skye noticed Bryan was frowning.

"Maybe you should remedy that, Skye. After seeing you two go at it, I think you should carry blades. Maybe not as many as Kuai, but at least a few," Bryan said.

Corbin nodded, then turned to Skye with a grin. "You should ask Gilian if they could set you up with some elf blades. Fuck, those things are a work of art."

"Yeah? I think maybe you should get one."

"Eh...I'm passable with a blade but give me a good blaster any day," Corbin said.

"You think Teak will ever give up that rifle? He's still carrying it with him wherever he goes," Bryan asked.

"That worries me some. I'm not sure why when it doesn't even work in Underhill." Skye thought maybe he'd have to talk to Teak or even do a little mental prodding. He really hoped there wasn't something more serious going on.

Skye felt someone and turned just as Revali stepped into the sitting room. Poor thing looked so nervous.

"Hey, I saw you practicing with the guys. Looked like you were catching on pretty quick." Skye hoped to give a little encouragement because he remembered how awkward he felt when he first started training with Taleel. Skye felt his face blush at the memory of how he loved watching Taleel's crotch and the efforts he went to trying to fluster the man.

"Thanks. Um...could I talk to you?" Revali shuffled and didn't make eye contact.

"Sure, what's up? Do you mind asking in front of Corbin and Bryan - they get really grumpy if I'm alone."

"That's fine. Am I a bad wing-mate?"

"Huh?" Skye stared at Revali in confusion.

'This sounds serious, just open our shields and read him. With what he's been through, we can't take risks,' Mistral said.

Skye opened himself to Revali and took in the confused jumble of thoughts and images, trying to sort it out without reacting at the same time. Maybe being so used to bottling up his emotions and hiding things would pay off in this situation.

"Rev, can you tell me why you think you aren't a good wing-mate?" Skye thought it might help if Revali put it in his own words.

"I was talking to Jhaeros..." Revali paused and stared at the floor.

"Father Dragon," Corbin muttered, and Bryan sighed and shook his head.

Maybe Skye wasn't the only one who was figuring this out.

"And?" Skye prompted.

"I was there for part of it, but he was telling me how awesome it was and that he'd been with all the wing-brothers, and wasn't that just amazing and..."

"Rev, you are not Jhaeros. I think it's safe to say none of the wing- mates are exactly like Jhaeros-"

"Eh...maybe Willow," Bryan helpfully suggested.

"Regardless, what I'm trying to say is each of us is unique and finds our own place and fit within the wing. While Jhaeros may have chosen to connect physically, that's not for everyone, and it certainly isn't expected or required. I'd go so far as saying his appetite is unusual..."

"Skye's right. Most of us were much more hesitant about getting intimate with each other, let alone the...yeah, anyway. Did you know Kuai and I just had sex for the first time a couple of days ago?" Bryan shared.

"So it's not bad that I haven't..."

"Not at all. Like I explained, the attraction will grow, and at some point, you may want to do things with other wing-brothers, but you don't have to. It isn't expected. You need to go at your own pace and with who 'you' choose." Skye could feel Revali's relief and saw some of the tension melt away.

"It's not that I don't like sex. I thought it was incredible, but I'm not ready for all of them to... But I would kinda like to do things again with you and Garrett, you know, if you ever wanted." Revali blushed even redder. "...and maybe more with Chaz and Venci."

"I'm sure they would be very flattered and more than willing, Rev. Skye's been trying to get me straightened out since I joined the wing. We all come with issues. If you ever need to talk or just want to complain and get it off your mind, I'm here for you. And you know you can always talk to Skye," Corbin said.

Revali nodded as Corbin walked over and pulled the siren into his arms. Skye and Bryan joined in the group hug.

"Better?" Skye asked.

"Yeah. Sorry I freaked out."

"Nothing to apologize for. Why don't you get cleaned up for dinner? That's where I'm headed. I can also promise you that it won't be long before I invite you to join Garrett and me again." Skye watched as Revali walked back to his room.

"Well, fuck. I don't think we'd survive if all the wing-mates were like Jhaeros. It's going to be hard enough keeping up with what we've got," Corbin muttered, opening the door to Skye's room. "What? Aren't you going to take a shower?"

Skye followed Corbin, giving him a quick kiss on the way by. "I think we'll be okay and thanks."

"Uh, do we need to be in the bath with him, or is out here safe enough?" Bryan asked.

"I'll keep the door open; how's that?" Skye wasn't sure anywhere was safe given that the last time he was in the same room with all of them and in touching distance of River.

Skye stripped and got into the shower, thanking Underhill or whatever power had given him a real bath with a hot shower. He'd somewhat expected for elves to use waterfalls or something. He'd just got naked and lathered up his hair when he heard the bedroom door open, followed by a curse.

"What the?" a deep male voice exclaimed.

Skye peeked out but couldn't see who it was.

"Did you need something, sir?" Corbin asked.

"No! How did I get here?" the voice growled, and Skye heard the door slam.

"Weird..." Bryan said, and Skye returned to focusing on getting clean. He'd just finished rinsing off and turned off the shower when the door opened again.

"Blazes! What in the nine levels of hell?"

"Dude, we haven't moved. Not sure why you keep expecting something different when you open the door," Bryan said.

"But I didn't! I'm trying to get back to my room, but no matter what damned door I open, I end up here!"

Skye wrapped a towel around his waist and stepped out to see what was going on. Corbin and Bryan didn't sound worried, so he was confident it wasn't a threat. The pull registered at the same time he saw their reluctant guest.

"Mattekin?"

"Of course it's you! Damn it. Can't you just leave me alone? No matter how hard I try to avoid you, you're everywhere! Don't you have clothes?" Mattekin yelled.

Skye held up his hands. "Chill. I swear I'm not doing anything to you, Mattekin. The guys can tell you we haven't been stalking you or even looking for you. Besides, you are in my bedroom."

Mattekin grumbled and slammed the door closed again.

"Maybe I should talk to him," Bryan said, opening the door. He opened it wider. "Skye?"

"Yeah?"

"He's not there. I mean, even if he ran, he wouldn't have gotten out that fast."

"Maybe he was motivated?" Corbin said.

"He's got it bad if you ask me," Bryan said, pushing the door closed. "Any idea why he's having a harder time than the others your magic has noticed?"

"My only guess is it has something to do with Underhill and how strong all the magic is here." Skye pointed to the leather pants on the bed. "Can you hand me those? Other than that, I don't know. Revali was in bad shape physically, so it might have taken a while for his body to be ready, and I didn't touch Jhaeros until right before, so he hardly had time to get too worked up."

"You think Underhill might be messing with Mattekin?" Corbin asked, handing Skye his vest.

"Given that he got a play-by-play vision of us welcoming Jhaeros, yeah, I'd say that's very likely."

Bryan sat on the bed and lay back with his arms spread. "Damn, speaking of Jhaeros, that elf sure knows how to fuck. And those ears, UGH! So fucking sexy."

"Better not let Raphael hear you talking about Jhaeros that way. He might get jealous," Corbin said, leaning against the wall.

"Who ever said I can't like more than one? But Raph is kinda perfect. Skye, are you sure your magic didn't notice him? We need more hot elves in the wing. You don't share Dillon or Rilien with the rest of us."

"Not even a tingle. Doesn't mean it couldn't change." Skye tried to count through the anger at Bryan mentioning Dillon and Rilien. They could be with whoever they want; it isn't my fault they prefer me or each other. Skye looked at Bryan's muscled body all stretched out and wondered if he'd ultimately end up with an elf as his bond-mate.

'Need to admit that we might be more protective of Dillon and Rilien than the others. And can I point out you didn't mind at all when we found out Bryan was fucking Gilian? Might want to think about that one. But the bigger issue is that you need to realize that the sooner we change Chaz, Teak, and the elves, the more time our wing-mates have to check them out and see if one of them is their mate. Just because we haven't noticed any connections doesn't mean there isn't one right under our snout,' Mistral said.

That's a good point. Doing the change is pretty low-key...maybe I do Raphael after dinner tonight. It also made Skye realize that since Dillon had been one of the first to change if his future bond-mate was in the wing, they'd likely already know.

'I think it is safe to assume that Jhaeros's mate is not one of the dragons with us as well.'

Skye tried to remember what Kleitos had explained about naturally forming bonds. He couldn't remember everything, but he did recall that sex was a catalyst.

"Do you know if the others are on their way back yet?" Corbin asked.

Skye closed his eyes and extended his mind. "Yeah. Magic lessons must be over because Garrett and the others are on their way, and the ones who were training in the grand hall are getting cleaned up.

Bryan frowned. "How bad?"

Skye smiled and double-checked his wing-mates. "Things must have gone well. They're in pretty good spirits. Especially River. Even Venci seems to be in a good mood."

"Whew, that's good. It's not fun for anyone when your brother is in a mood," Bryan said.

Once Skye had his boots on, they went back into the common room. As soon as he'd stepped out, Skye paused and listened. "Do you hear that?"

"Yeah..." Corbin smiled and closed his eyes.

"Who..." Bryan whispered.

Skye couldn't just hear the voice; he felt it down to his bones. He couldn't make out the words, but the melody was hauntingly beautiful, full of hope and joy. He couldn't remember a song ever affecting him so strongly.

"It's...fuck, it's going to make me cry," Corbin said, looking at Skye with concern.

"Revali?" Bryan asked with tears forming in his eyes.

"Let's see." Skye walked to the room Revali had been sharing with Chaz and pushed the door open. As soon as he did, he could hear the words more clearly and bit his lip. "I think we know why they're called sirens."

"But I thought they used their song for seduction. To lure in their victims," Bryan whispered.

The bathroom door opened, and Revali stepped out, wearing a towel. The song stopped abruptly with a squeak.

"Oh! No! I'm so sorry! I didn't think anyone was around or would hear me! Please don't send me away! I'm sorry!" Revali gasped and pleaded. "I'll never do it again. I forgot. I'm so, so sorry."

Skye quickly stepped into Revali and pulled him into his arms. "Shhh... It's okay. You didn't do anything wrong, and no one is sending you away." Skye drew his magic and pushed it into Revali, calming him and showing him he was loved.

"But..."

"It was beautiful, Rev. There is nothing to apologize for, and I might be a little upset if you never shared your voice like that again. I think I need to hear it often. Find our connection, focus on it, and you'll feel it. I can't lie to a wing-mate."

Revali buried his face in Skye's shoulder, his body still shaking with sobs.

"It's okay. Everything will be fine." Skye was focusing on calming Revali when the door burst open, and several wing-mates burst into the room.

"What happened? What's wrong?" River yelled.

Garrett stormed in and came immediately up behind Skye, wrapping his arms around his mate and Revali. Skye accepted Garrett's offer of his magic without thinking, adding it to his own to wrap around the siren.

"Guys! Someone's hurt!" Jhaeros yelled, pushing his way through his new brothers. "What's wrong? What can I do?"

Deep breath, everyone. It will be okay. Can you give us a little space? I'll explain soon, Skye sent, then had an idea. Jhaeros, can you get your father? He might be able to help.

Going now. Jhaeros turned and got through the press of bodies as easily as if they weren't there. Skye felt a wave of pride at Jhaeros's reaction. He was so new to his connection he probably couldn't even tell who was in trouble but had still come running and didn't even question Skye's request.

Do you need me? River asked.

I think we'll be okay. I'll try to figure this out once I get him calmed down. Can you herd the others to the dining room and distract them? Skye asked, speaking only to River.

Want me to dance naked on the table? River asked.

Save that for later. Skye mentally laughed and felt some of the tension ease. As soon as the room cleared, he eased Revali over to the bed and sat him down.

"Now... tell us what's wrong," Skye encouraged, keeping his arm around the siren's shoulders.

"No one is angry or upset, Revali. The others were just worried. They can feel your distress through the bond," Garrett explained as he sat on the other side, pressing against Revali.

Revali looked at both of them in turn. His eyes still full of tears and puffy. "Mother said if I ever sang again, she'd cut out my tongue and feed it to me. I'm so sorry, I wasn't thinking, and I guess I thought I was alone so it wouldn't matter..." He began crying again.

If Skye hadn't been reading Revali's thoughts and got glimpses of his memories, he would have been totally lost. As it was, he still wasn't sure he understood.

"What happened when you sang before?" Skye prompted.

"The other sirens got really upset and tried to hurt themselves. Some had to be restrained from throwing themselves off the cliff."

Skye took a deep breath. "Did anyone teach you how to use your voice or how to control the song?"

"No. As a male, I wasn't considered worthy, and they didn't figure it mattered since who would come to a male siren's call? They didn't need the female elves," Revali answered.

Garrett gave a shoulder bump to Revali and grinned. "Pretty sure any dragon within hearing distance would have come to you, and as you now know, every one of our wing."

Skye rolled his eyes. "Revali, the song I heard was beautiful. It didn't make me sad or make me think of hurting myself. It was full of love and hope and happiness."

"I was happy here...with you and the others. But I understand if you need me to pack my things and leave."

"Not a chance, buddy." Garrett put his arm around Revali's waist and hugged him tight.

"Garrett's right. You're ours now and not going anywhere."

A knock sounded at the door, and Corbin opened it to reveal Arnakkhor.

"Jhaeros said I was needed."

"Please come in, Arnak. You remember the young siren, Revali," Skye said.

"I do. How can I help?" Arnak moved closer.

"What do you know about a siren's song or more specifically, a male siren's?"

"Revali is the first male siren I've ever seen or heard of who made it to maturity. You saw how he was treated, most don't survive that long. The female's song is one of seduction. It has an underlying layer of compulsion, so when a male, regardless of race, hears it, he can't help but follow. I'll be honest, I have heard it, and it is terrifying. You know you should fight it, but you can't. They use it to draw in males for breeding, or before we left Earth, for food and wealth. They'd draw in ships and take the most attractive men to mate, strip the ship and then sink it. Once all the females had bred with the ones they wanted, the males were then killed."

"Well that sucks," Skye scoffed, tugging Revali in tighter.

"There were no other songs? No different gifts or powers?" Garrett asked.

"Not that I ever heard of. Their power was widely known, and sailors took great care in reporting any sightings. It was common to keep wax or a bit of rag on hand to plug your ears when sailing near their waters. Once we were exiled, we put up markers to make sure no one stumbled into their territory."

"Maybe we ask Master Mage Quanta to help us figure it out?" Skye suggested. "There's no way anything that beautiful could be bad. I'm thinking we just don't understand. Maybe for now, we'll keep the singing in private, but please, Revali, never hide it from me."

"Or me. We've got you, Rev, and Skye's right, we'll find answers," Garrett added.

"If you're sure."

"Very. Get dressed, and we'll walk over with you for dinner. You need to eat more so we can build up your strength," Skye said. He noted that while Revali was still nervous, he believed their assurances and was back to being hopeful. I'll take that as a win, Mistral.

"And the food here is so much better than we had before, right Revali?" Arnakkhor asked.

"Yes," Revali said with a smile.

'Pretty sure we're going to find out his power isn't like the other sirens,' Mistral said.

Skye kissed Revali's forehead and pulled Garrett from the room after Corbin opened the door. Bryan followed.

"Whew. Thank you for coming, Arnak."

"I was actually already on my way. Allanna had another vision, and she said I needed to be here."

"Can you join us for dinner?" Garrett asked.

"If that would be acceptable," Arnakkhor said with a nod.

"Of course. This is your home more than ours. Pretty sure, we're the interlopers here," Skye added, then shivered as if a frigid wind had come through the room.

"Hm. You felt it too?" Arnakkhor asked.

"What?" Skye asked.

"The cold. Pretty sure Underhill didn't like your statement. I may have been gone a while, but maybe that's one thing that hasn't changed." Arnakkhor said.

"Underhill expresses opinions on what you say?" Garrett asked.

"At times, yes. Or at least that is my recollection. As I said, it has been a while."

"Was your wife's vision about Revali?" Skye asked.

"She never shares details about her vision, but I don't think so. I could be wrong, but the impression I got was that I would learn something. Perhaps about Jhaeros?"

"I'm not aware of anything new. The bonding was successful," Skye said, trying to ignore Garrett's dancing eyebrows as he stood behind Arnakkhor. "But I do have a question for you. Gilian was talking about how magic works for elves and the idea of gifts or talents. Do you happen to know what Jhaeros's are?"

"No, I'm sorry, I don't. His mother and I have worried that being born on a planet void of magic that it perhaps meant he wasn't blessed. He's shown no signs, and for me, mine began when I hit puberty."

"May we ask what your gifts were?" Garrett asked.

"Mine are related to blades and fighting. It was one of the reasons the Queen of Air and Darkness chose me as her champion. At that time, there was no other fae who could best me in battle."

"I take it you assumed Jhaeros would get something similar?" Skye clarified.

"Gifts often run in family lines, but not always. And to our knowledge, Jhaeros has never had dreams or visions like his mother."

Garrett's stomach growled, and Skye bit back a laugh. Revali joined them and moved to stand next to Skye. A smile lit his face when Skye took his hand. "Maybe we should talk more while we eat? I think Garrett might be hungry, and this one is always hungry." Skye gave Revali's hand a squeeze.

They walked across the hall to the dining room. Skye thought Pater would be appalled that they didn't have "proper" sit-down meals that were served, but Skye liked the variety. This way everyone could eat what they liked and have as much as they wanted. Something that he'd discovered was important to shifters and also helpful when he was trying to nurse a few wing-mates back to health. He bumped shoulders with Revali when the siren hesitated on filling his plate.

Either take what you want, or I'll fill the plate for you. There is more than enough, and if we run out of anything, they'll bring more. Go heavy on the meats. Remember? Itheral said you needed lots of protein.

"It smells wonderful," Arnakkhor said as he stared at the spread of food on the sideboard.

"I'm really glad all the legends about eating with the fae didn't turn out to be true. I love the food here," Skye said and felt Arnakkhor's gaze.

"Oh, but in my day, they were true."

"Maybe you can explain it to us after we have full plates and can focus." Garrett's stomach rumbled again as he reached for one of the fresh-baked rolls.

Skye turned back to the room and saw that most everyone was already seated. Quanta and his mate were at the far end of the table, as were the remaining open chairs - except for one between Chaz and Venci. It looked as though Lady Telawynn was not joining them this evening, but Raphael was seated between Kuai and Bryan. He didn't often join them - so maybe his sticking close had already started. And no surprise that Mattekin was not present. He wondered briefly why Quanta's other mages didn't join them. All three of them were dragons so he'd have thought they'd have been more comfortable with Skye's group.

Skye watched Revali and filled a second plate of the siren's favorites. He steered the siren to the seat by Chaz and set the other plate down, and poured him water as well. He gripped Revali's shoulders and kissed the top of his head. "Eat as much as you want, okay?"

Revali turned and smiled up at Skye. He couldn't resist leaning in for a quick kiss. He put his forehead to Revali's and closed his eyes. You belong with us now. And I'll say it again, I thought your song was breathtaking. Skye pulled back as he felt the siren take a deep breath, and a sense of calm filled him.

As he passed Garrett on the way back to the food, his mate leaned in for a quick kiss of his own and cupped Skye's neck. "We'll take care of him, quit worrying."

Skye wasn't going to argue that he wasn't worrying. He worried about all his wing. Constantly. He focused on filling his plate and set it down beside Garrett before he went to get something to drink. There were pitchers of water on the table, but he'd noticed a decanter of wine and decided he needed it. He poured himself a liberal amount and on his way back, paused as he saw Raphael staring at Bryan as the gold joked with Mica. The elf's eyes were full of longing, and Skye decided there was no time like the present. He stopped behind Raphael's chair, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"I'm glad you decided to join us this evening, Raphael. It's nice having you here." As he spoke the words, Skye pulled his magic and formed the thoughts in his mind, pushing his power into the elf ranger. Raphael gave a slight shudder as the change took hold. Skye gave a gentle squeeze and moved to his seat.

Skye's butt hadn't even hit the chair before Quanta leaned over and whispered. "What did you do?"

"What?" Skye turned to the master mage and was surprised at the intense look he was getting.

"I got some wine?"

"No, no. Not that. You did something to Raphael." Quanta was whispering, but several of his wing-mates turned to look. Maybe the mage forgot about shifter hearing.

Quanta, they can hear you. What are you talking about? Skye sent mentally. He wasn't going to admit to anything until he knew what the mage was talking about.

I've been studying your bond with your wing-mates and had cast a spell so I could see the magic in the room and watch the interactions. I thought this was a good place since everyone would be focused on eating and relaxed. When you put your hand on Raphael's shoulder, the magic flared and lit him up like a dragon after sex. Then as it pulled back, Raphael was different. You changed something.

Skye sighed and picked at his food, taking a slow sip of his wine as he glanced down the table. Everyone was focused elsewhere. I fed the magic into him to enable him to be a bond-mate someday. I'm not sure how long it takes or how it works.

Fascinating...

Skye took a few bites and felt Garrett's hand rub up his leg. It's okay, baby. Doesn't matter that he knows. Raphael wanted the gift, and it won't be long before Quanta will have lots of elves to study.

Skye turned to glare at his mate. That doesn't help, you know?

Garrett laughed and gave Skye a quick kiss. Remind yourself how many dragons you're going to make happy. And let's be honest, I think the elves are going to be pretty pleased as well.

Maybe. Skye took a bite of roasted meat of some type and let out an audible moan. Oh, Mistral, that is like the best thing ever... His dragon prompted him to eat more of the savory meat and felt eyes on him. He looked up to see most of those around the table looking at him.

Mica raised an eyebrow.

"Sorry, this...whatever it is...is amazing." Skye blushed and stared at his food, pretending not to feel the heat coming through his bonds. He hadn't meant to make them all think of sex.

"I agree, Prince Skye. Don't let them get under your skin. I've found the food in Underhill to be just one of the many delightful discoveries," Aksel said.

"You sound like you've enjoyed being in Underhill," Garrett said.

"Experience of a lifetime. Though I didn't like the part where my mate was in a coma. Other than that, this is beyond what I ever imagined." Aksel squeezed Quanta's hand. No one could miss the love in the dragon's eyes.

"Arnak, you mentioned something about the food earlier..." Skye leaned around Garrett to look at the dark fae king.

"I was commenting that things have changed. Before the exile, the elves were feared for good reason. Mushroom rings, fairy circles, will of the wisps, there were many lures to draw in unsuspecting humans and bring them to the fae realm. Once here, they were given food laced with magic and often special spices and mushrooms."

"Why?" Skye asked.

"Breeding stock, entertainment, a bit of sport." Arnakkhor's tone made it sound as if it was perfectly normal. "Surely you all realize that humans are the most fertile race. They are short-lived but breed like rabbits. I assumed since dragons take them as mates, this must be common knowledge."

"Say what?" River asked, joining in the conversation. "I thought breeding with humans was a big 'no' for the elves."

Arnakkhor frowned. "Why would you think that? If we didn't interbreed with humans, there would be no births. The elves, high elves or the night elves, would interbreed to the point that there would be no elflings. Even so, we have one or at most two offspring in our long-lived lifespan. It was always so."

"Uh...I think someone messed up somewhere along the way. Gilian or Raphael, I don't know if you can explain this better, but my understanding is that having human ancestry was looked down upon and would get you banished."

"Well, that's a joke. There isn't an elf alive who doesn't have a human somewhere in their family tree," Arnakkhor snorted.

"Skye's correct, Arnakkhor. In my lifetime, it has always been strictly forbidden to lie with a human or as Skye said, we would be banished from fae lands," Gilian said.

"And how's that working for you? Are your females still having children?"

"Fewer and fewer with each generation. Most of those born are because the parents had enough funds or power to enlist mages to help them," Raphael added.

"Let's get back to the food. What did the magic or mushrooms do?" River asked.

"Humans who ate the spelled food could no longer pass the borders of Underhill or the fae kingdom. They were trapped. The spices or mushrooms, as you might expect, would remove their inhibitions and put them in a state of mind to lie with whoever was available. Not that I think it was right, but the human men were passed around until they could no longer contribute. They would seed the female elves, but most of their lives would be as a plaything for the men. When they were no longer fertile or they became unattractive, they were made servants or forced to labor."

"And the women?" Gilian asked.

"The same. They would bear as many children as their bodies could carry and then they would either die or become servants. The children would be taken in by the father who sired them. It was also quite common to swap babies that would be sterile or sickly with healthy human babies from the human realm."

"Changelings," River said just above a whisper.

"Yes. They would be raised as elves and often glamours cast so no one would see that they were once human," Arnakkhor explained.

"If that's true, then Underhill wanting elves to mate with dragons isn't such a stretch," Skye said.

"No, of course not. Who thought it was? I knew a dragon whose other form appeared to be an elf. He was one of those who refused to leave Earth."

"I think all of you heard me speak of this, but Kleitos said that many if not all dragons have traces of elf DNA. Not much but enough to believe that there were elves in their ancestry just like Arnak said elves had humans in theirs."

"I'm not sure it changes anything." Arnakkhor looked around as if waiting for someone to contradict him.

"It could..." Gilian looked at Skye. "Maybe we need to not only open the fae's minds up to considering dragons but humans as well for potential mates. See if under Theon's guidance, he can change the laws."

"It would have to start with Regent Thillean. I'm not sure Theon has any power yet. Would you be willing to talk to your grandmother? If anyone could do it, it would be Lady Telawynn." Skye suggested.

"How could this knowledge have been lost? It seems too important to have been forgotten," Quanta asked.

"It is more likely that someone intentionally wiped out the knowledge or made it a crime to speak of. Over time it faded away. The King of Light often voiced such opinions and said the elves should become more pure, but at that time, there were too many who knew better," Arnakkhor said.

"But other than those exiled, no one else is left from that time, Arnak. I'm not even sure who you could ask or where it might have been recorded, but it seems as though at some point after you left, the elves drank the Kool-Aid," Skye said.

Arnakkhor scowled. "I do not know of this cool aid."

River burst out laughing.

"Sorry, I guess it doesn't translate. People believed the lie."

"Sadly, yes. My people suffered as well since we had no other races to help us. You saw how few young were born after our exile, and that happened over a much shorter period of time."

Everyone returned to their food, but the mood had become more somber.

"So what magic did you guys learn today?" Teak asked.

Conversation immediately picked up as they each talked about what they'd learned, and Venci's humor and drama distracted the group enough to bring laughter.

Thank you, Teak. I love you, Skye sent to the fairy and smiled as he sat straighter and preened at the praise.

Skye felt Quanta's touch and turned to the mage.

I'm not quite as taken with Underhill as my mate, but I will say it has been one of the most educational adventures in my life. There are so many questions and new areas that I need to research that I think I will be busy for the next several decades. But for the moment, have you looked closely at your wing-mates?

Not sure I understand, Skye replied.

With your magic sight. It is easy to distinguish the bonds you share with your wing and the bond you have with Garrett or that River has with Nik is like my own with Aksel. But what I also see is an untethered bond. As I look around, those who don't have it are Teak, Chaz, and Arnakkhor. And what I think is most revealing is that Raphael didn't have one before you touched him. For the others, it appears more like a tentacle, but for Raphael it's no more than a stub. Yet, it is there, and it glows the same golden light like the others. Is that what becomes the bond for true mates?

Skye opened his other sight, and after his brain caught up, he could see what Quanta was talking about, a bright golden cord that extended from his core to Garrett's. For those who were unmated, it was thicker like a tentacle. Skye turned his focus to Jhaeros, and the night elf's was more than the stub Raphael had but not nearly as long as the others. He thought it would make sense if the change took time to complete.

'I would agree. We need to do Chaz and Teak soon as well. Underhill is going to get upset if we don't. Our bond to Mattekin and the changes have to happen before the portal will return,' Mistral grumbled.

I see it, Quanta. And you're right. I haven't started the change in any of the other three. I wouldn't for Arnakkhor since he already has a wife, but I do need to do so for Chaz and Teak.

Perhaps you shouldn't assume? I'd suggest asking Arnakkhor what he wants. My understanding is that it makes it possible, but the individual still chooses, Quanta said.

Yes, but when you meet your perfect mate, I'm not sure it's all that easy to say no. Having his own mate, Skye thought Quanta should understand.

"Skye, do you want me to get you more wine? I was going to pour one for myself," Garrett asked.

"Yes, please."

Maybe ask him about Jhaeros as well as Revali, Garrett suggested as he got up from the table.

The others were all very distracted now in their own conversations; however, Skye didn't want to risk them hearing or becoming upset again. He caught Quanta's eye.

I have a couple of unrelated questions. How familiar are you with sirens or their magic? And do you have a way to detect an elf's magic gifts?

I'm somewhat familiar with sirens. I have dealt with a few since I was bonded and became a mage. They weren't all sent into exile. As long as they don't use their powers to break Imperial law, they are left alone and treated like other shifters, Quanta explained. And similar to your magic sight, you could try a reveal or a divining spell to detect magic gifts or power. That's what I've been using on the dragons.

Have you ever met a male siren, like Revali?

No. I didn't think it was possible for there to be a male siren. I've only ever encountered or heard of females. Why?

Skye tried to explain the song he'd overheard and the interaction with his new wing-mate. Mistral insisted on Skye sharing that they speculated that Revali's power might be different and that likely the reason Quanta had never seen a male was because they'd been killed. Which of course required Skye to recount how they'd initially met Revali and the conversation with the Mother and other sirens.

Okay, wow. Can I have a moment? I need to think.

Skye agreed and sipped his wine. Garrett reached over and took his hand. He leaned in and kissed Skye on the neck below his ear before he whispered. "Check out Bryan."

Skye had to lean, but he looked at his wing-mate, trying to determine what Garrett had seen. His next reaction was to find his bond to Bryan and open his connection more fully. Skye put his hand on Garrett's as he tried to sort through his wing-mate's emotions and confusion. Also interesting was the somewhat smitten look on his face as he stared openly at Raphael.

It's a mess, Garrett. His thoughts are all jumbled. Best I can discern is he's really confused why he never noticed before how attractive Raphael is. There's not much more...well, the longer he stares at him, the hornier he's getting, but after all, he is a dragon.

His expressions and the way he looks at Raphael is different. I mean Raphael is pretty. You even said so the first time he appeared in your vision. Now, look at Raphael and tell me if you see something different with him.

Skye bit back his immediate response and tried to just "see" the elf. He didn't have a bond with him, but he should be able to pick up anything strong. Garrett was right, Skye had thought the ranger was pretty the first time Underhill sent him the vision. Seeing him in person, the real Raphael was even more stunning. There was a vibrancy and light that didn't come through in the vision. He was admittedly attractive with his pale skin, dark hair, and large eyes. Skye had seen him naked and knew the body was as fit as any of his wing-mates - if not as heavily muscled.

Well? Garrett prompted.

Skye tried to focus on Raphael's thoughts. Nothing stood out. He desperately wanted Bryan to fuck him again, but he was also thinking there were several others he wanted to try, including Skye. He was...happy. In his own mind, he thought he was happier here with Skye's wing than he had ever been in his life. He liked them, enjoyed being with them and for once, felt accepted.

Nothing unusual, but it does make me a little sad, Skye started then filled Garrett in on the rest. Everyone had finished and started clearing the table.

"Skye, you're scheduled to train with me again in the morning. It will be good to get back to your lessons. And if there is someone in particular you'd like me to test, bring them along. I'm hoping Mattekin is back and able to train tomorrow. Your dragons are making progress, but they're all behind where I'd like them to be," Quanta said.

  • Scene 4 *

"You think this will work?" River asked as Raphael led them south of the hold.

"I hope so. I'm not sure who I could ask." Skye was a little nervous, but Mistral thought it would work. Skye glanced up at the purple-blue sky. He had no idea how long it would stay light but it seemed like it was high summer - so hopefully several more hours.

"So we're trusting that Underhill will lead us to your grandmother?" Nik did not sound very convinced.

"Well, the way I figure it, we'll end up there or the Delea grove," Garrett said with a laugh.

"That's not helpful," Skye grumbled. He could see Mica and Jayce up front with Raphael and knew without looking that Kuai and Noud were behind them. The elf guard had insisted that like Raphael, he was assigned to Skye until told otherwise and would protect Skye's people whether he wanted him to or not.

'I know we didn't bond him, but he acts as if we did,' Mistral observed.

Yeah, and it's creeping me out a bit. Bram was acting the same way. You don't think it's because we had sex, do you?

'Wait and see, or we could check them to see if there's magic involved. They weren't at dinner with us when we were examining the others.'

"I see some farms, so that's good, right?" Nik asked.

"Skye, do your magic scan woo-woo and see if you pick up anything. Maybe there will be a big arrow, or one of the places will glow," River said.

"Why don't you? Wasn't that one of the things you learned today?" Skye retorted.

"Started learning. I'm nowhere near as good as you, big brother. You should do it."

Garrett snickered, causing Skye to sigh and open his other sight and scan the horizon. He didn't see anything that indicated where his grandmother might be, then dropped his eyes and stopped as something on the ground caught his attention. He leaned down and picked up a slightly glowing green stone. He scanned behind him but didn't see any others, then turned and looked ahead and saw them stretching out between him and his guards. Who incidentally stopped and were looking back in confusion.

"Does anyone else see these?" Skye held the glowing stone in his hand. Nik and River were the closest.

"It's a rock, so?" Nik said.

"That's glowing..." River reached out and grabbed it, rubbing his fingers over it.

"Is not," Nik retorted.

River looked up and caught Skye's eye, giving him a huge grin. "Cool!"

"What's cool about it?" Garrett looked over River's shoulder. "It's a stone."

"Well if you were special, you'd see it was glowing." River winked and looked ahead, apparently seeing them as Skye had. "Can I lead?"

"Go for it," Skye said.

"You guys are seeing something we can't?" Garrett asked.

"I guess. But for River and I, they definitely give off a pale green glow, and they're set in a line about every few meters, leading that way." Skye pointed.

"Then I guess we better stick with our mates, Nik." Garrett threw his arm around Skye and gave him a squeeze.

Skye saw that River had caught up to Raphael and was likely explaining to him and the others that he could see a path. They fell in behind River and the group continued on. The farmhouse didn't end up being too much farther away. They passed about three others before the stones led right up to the big wrap-around porch of a house that looked like it had come straight from Earth.

He stepped up beside River and put his arm over his brother's shoulders.

"It looks familiar for some reason," River said, looking up at the house.

"Pretty sure it's identical to the one she and Grandpa had back home." Skye looked up when the screen door opened with a screech and his grandmother stepped out.

"There you are! I was beginning to worry that you got lost. Well, stop gawking, boys. Come on in." She turned and the screen door made a bang as it snapped shut.

"Ready?" Skye asked.

River grunted. "This is so weird."

"How do you want us to do this?" Mica asked.

"Hm...pretty sure we ought to all go in and get through introductions," Skye said.

"Perimeter is clear. There's a picnic table and chairs in the back if we need to wait outside," Kuai said when he joined them.

"Skye?" Garrett prompted.

"Everyone in and let me introduce you. We can decide after that," Skye said.

"River won't say it, but he'd like time with just Skye and his grandmother," Nik said as he squeezed River's arm.

"I get that." Mica gestured for Skye to lead the way.

Skye took Garrett's hand and opened the door, leading everyone into the vintage living room. His grandmother was seated on the large floral couch with photo albums spread out in front of her on the coffee table.

"I thought some of you might like seeing the boys when they were little." She tucked a long gray strand of hair behind her ear and beamed at them. It was clear when her eyes went wide and her hand covered her mouth that she'd seen River. There was even a barely audible gasp.

"Holy..." River whispered.

Skye had dropped his shields before even stepping on the porch, so he got blasted by both of them. He had to wipe tears away as Mistral helped him calm his breathing and let the emotions wash over him.

"I'd recognize you anywhere," Grandma B whispered. She stood and stepped up to River, who immediately pulled her into a hug.

"I remember..."

"Of course you do, sweetheart." They held each other for a few minutes until they pulled apart and both had to wipe tears away. "Now, introduce me to this handsome young man."

"Grandma B., this is my mate...or I guess husband Nikias."

"So handsome and look at those eyes - another trouble maker, for sure. I sure hope the Goddess knew what she was doing putting you two together."

"Not me," River said innocently.

"Oh, my memory is way too good to forget my little hellion." She ran her finger along the edge of the leather vest River was wearing. "Not the most practical get up."

"All our other clothing disappeared when we returned to Underhill, and we found the leathers in their place," Skye explained.

"Eh...well I'm sure there is a reason. Oh my, and who is this? My but you're a big one," Grandma B said.

Skye was a little worried when her eyes were on Garrett's crotch and not his face. He'd noticed that the leathers did not exactly conceal his mate's endowment.

"Grandma B., this is my bond-mate, Garrett D'Or Drakken."

"I bet you broke more than your share of hearts before my grandson nabbed you."

"Of course not. I was waiting for Skye." Garrett gave his most innocent love-struck expression. The scary part was that it looked totally sincere.

"Pfft. Please, you're a dragon. You are what I expected. Skye always did favor the male dolls with exaggerated muscles. What were those...rescue rangers?"

"Rescue Heroes, and they weren't dolls; they were action figures." Skye corrected her. I think she's making that up, Mistral.

"That's alright, honey. How about these other handsome men? I've seen you before, I think."

"It is an honor, ma'am. I'm Noud, part of Lady Telawyn's personal guard. I was assigned to assist Skye."

"And you as well, I assume?" Grandma B. stepped over to Raphael.

"Raphael, I am one of the Royal Rangers, in service to Regent Thillean."

"For now..." She winked at him and turned to look at Mica, Kuai, and Jayce, who'd stayed back behind the others.

"More dragons, I think. You must be the wing-mates."

"How'd you know about them, Grandma?" River asked.

"Oh, Keeper was explaining it all to me. He said it would help me relate to you better if I knew some of what had been happening."

Skye thought his stomach might have dropped to his toes, but Garrett nudged him to bring him back. Introductions?

Right. "Grandma, this is Mica. He's the leader of my guards, Jayce and Kuai. There are a lot more, but they're back at the hold or still on Draga."

"Guards? Hm...I think much more than that. But I'm being a terrible hostess. Please, everyone have a seat. I made fresh lemonade. Is there anyone who doesn't want any?"

No one objected, and Skye encouraged the others to sit down. Nik immediately grabbed one of the photo albums, and Garrett quickly sat beside him.

"Skye, River, would you mind helping me, please?" Grandma asked.

They followed her into the kitchen, where she set out glasses on a tray. "River, please get the ice out of the freezer for me. Skye, there's a tin of fresh-baked cookies over by the toaster. Would you put some on a plate for me?"

Once the cookies and lemonade had been delivered, Skye and River returned to the kitchen and sat at the table while their grandmother busied herself at the counter.

"This is really hard to believe," River said as he watched her.

"I know, dear. Give yourself some time, and you'll get used to the idea. Do you still drink milk, River?"

"Um...yeah?" River glanced at Skye in confusion.

"Grandma, you said the Keeper came by to speak with you?" Skye prompted.

"He did." She walked over to a fancy cupboard and pulled out what looked like a pie.

"And?" River and Skye said at the same time.

"He wanted to tell me a little more about you boys so I understood what you were going through. That's how I knew about the wing and a little bit about your mates. They are both so handsome." She sighed and stilled for a moment. "I'm happy for you both."

"Did he pass on any messages for us?" Skye asked.

Grandma B. stilled again. "Hm...not really. He wanted me to be prepared for your arrival and like I said, gave me some background."

Skye sighed. I was really hoping for some direction, Mistral.

"Grandma, Skye said you can't return to Draga with us. Why?"

She turned and set a glass of milk in front of both of them. "I can't leave Underhill, dear. When the bad men broke in and attacked us, I wasn't killed, but that doesn't mean I didn't get hurt." She unbuttoned the top button of her dress and pulled the collar aside, revealing the edge of a very large scar across her shoulder. "I don't exactly know what the creature was. Goodness, they probably told me, but I didn't know about this world then. Whatever it was, its claws carried a magic poison. The elves got me here before it killed me, but it had spread far enough they couldn't undo the damage. Don't worry, it's gone now, but it's the magic here that keeps me alive. If I step across the veil, I die. Simple as that."

"But you look healthy," River objected.

"Well of course I do. Underhill takes care of me. I haven't aged a day since, but Keeper warned me that eventually, I'll fade. Not to worry though, I have enough years to see my great-grandchildren someday. Keeper promised."

Skye stood and pulled his grandmother into a hug. "I'm so, so sorry."

"Oh, shush. I'm fine, and I've come to love it here. I have my boys and friends, and now, you two. I do hope that once things settle, you'll bring Charlie and Nancy to visit. Keeper told me they found their true mate. That's just wonderful. I'd like to meet him too."

"What?" Skye and River again said at the same time. The first question to Skye's mind was how could Keeper have known? Unless Underhill somehow pulled it from their minds? River and a few of the others knew he suspected...but...

Grandma B. laughed. "You two still acting like twins? My Lord, there were times when you two would give me chills with how in synch you were. And look at you now, both so handsome. Though I'm surprised to see that Skye's bigger. Always thought you'd be the larger one, River."

"He still might be. River didn't get his dragon form until a while after I started to change."

"That makes sense. I'm sure it bothers you, doesn't it, sweetheart?" She kissed the top of River's head.

"Don't worry, Grandma, I'll catch up. I've got to. My job is to keep him out of trouble."

She laughed again and patted his shoulder. "That will be a big job. You better do more than catch up." She returned to the table and set a piece of pie in front of each them, then came back with a third and put it at an empty seat.

"Please sit down and join us, Grandma," River said.

"Oh, that's not for me, honey. One of the boys will be along shortly. He needs to talk to you." She tipped her head, and Skye could hear the guys laughing in the other room.

Skye watched her pour another glass of milk and wondered who might need to talk with them. Adding that to the fact that the Keeper had visited her both piqued his curiosity as well as made him nervous. The laughter in the other room faded and it got to be very quiet.

His grandmother let out an audible sigh. "Don't worry, they'll be fine."

"What?" Skye exclaimed and immediately reached out to Garrett and found him in a deep sleep. Quickly he checked the others and found the same. "Grandma..."

"They're just sleeping, dear. Keeper said it was necessary, and I promise you're perfectly safe here. Keeper himself said he'd be on guard."

"Grandma, what did you do?" River asked nervously, likely having checked and found his mate and the others asleep just as Skye had.

There was a click, and River and Skye turned to see the door into the broom closet open. Mattekin stepped out with a towel wrapped around his head and one around his waist. He was still wet.

"What? Fuck, no. Not again," Mattekin swore.

"Hello, son. I wondered when you'd get here." Grandma B. walked over and pulled a bundle off one of the side chairs and shook it out, holding out what appeared to be a pink robe to Mattekin.

"This can't be happening." He turned and looked back into the closet he'd just exited to find that it was an ordinary broom cupboard and not a magic portal. "Fuck!"

"Now, Matty. You know I don't like that language in my house. Be a good boy and put this robe on. I already poured you a glass of milk."

"But..." Mattekin looked a bit unhinged, and Skye wasn't sure what to do to help the druid. It was pretty clear that Underhill was going to extreme measures.

Skye wasn't sure he wanted the druid to don the robe. His body was...wow. And the towel didn't hide that he was happy to be there.

Skye, I know he's freaked out and all, but that is one gorgeous man. I think he might even be more hung than our mates.

Skye bit his lip. Leave it to River to go there.

'He's right though,' Mistral pointed out. 'Greggory is going to love him.'

Now Skye had to fight the urge to laugh.

Mattekin took the robe and put it on before letting the towel drop from around his waist. He removed the towel from around his head, folded it and then picked up the other he'd dropped and did likewise. He glanced at Grandma B. who pointed and he put the towels where she'd shown him. Mattekin gave a heated glare to Skye and River before dropping into the chair.

"And I supposed you're going to say you had nothing to do with this?" Mattekin challenged.

"Of course they didn't. Matty, where are your manners? I told you this morning that you needed to stop fighting, and Keeper warned you. Didn't he?"

"Yes." Mattekin's response came out clearly as a sulk - even his shoulders drooped.

"Mattekin, if you don't want the bond, I'm not going to force it on you. I would never do that. It has to be something you want and that you go into of your own free will. Don't do it because Underhill messes with you," Skye said.

Mattekin snorted and stared down at the piece of pie in front of him. He let out another sigh and looked at Grandma B. "Really?"

She laughed and gave a shrug of her shoulders. "You're going to love it, I promise."

Skye looked at River and saw the quirked eyebrow. Are we missing something?

Not that Storm or I can see. Looks like berry pie to me. Smells good too. Mattekin's a mess. You can feel it, right? He's practically vibrating with need. I know he seems to be fighting the magic, but his body is giving a very different message. Maybe you should stop being so prim and proper and just read him?

Skye already had his shields down, so he knew what River was sensing from the druid. But then a thought hit him, and he turned to his grandma. "So you know Mattekin?"

"Of course, dear. He's one of my boys. Matty has been coming around for...what? At least five seasons, maybe more. Keeping track of time in Underhill is difficult at best. He helps me with my garden."

"When I'm not being harassed," Mattekin sniped as he took a bite of pie and moaned.

"I talked to her again last week. She understands that she only gets to stay if she gets consent. I'll not have my boys seduced against their will, and I explained to her that you weren't into women and so she could just stop," Grandma said.

Skye saw River tense up and knew he had to say something.

"Who is she?" Skye asked.

"Did you see that huge oak out back? It has its own tree nymph, and we have come to an understanding." Grandma B. walked over to River and put her hands on his shoulders. "Don't you fret. Keeper told her if she so much as looked at you, he'd move her to the middle of the swamp."

River's shoulders relaxed, and he took a deep breath. "Thanks...I had a-"

"No need to bring up bad memories, dear. You're safe here."

Skye worried a little that his grandmother already seemed to know about River's run-in with the nymphs because that likely meant that Keeper knew. And how exactly did Underhill find out? It raised so many questions. He took a bite of the pie and knew immediately why Mattekin had moaned. It was heaven in his mouth.

"Grandma B., this is like the best pie I've ever eaten," River said as he closed his eyes.

"Why, thank you. Keeper brought me the berries when he came to visit. Usually my boys pick the fruit for me, but those are much harder to get."

"Delicious as always, Grandma," Mattekin said.

Skye noticed the druid was more relaxed now.

"Matty, are you going to tell them?" Grandma asked.

"You're not going to let up, are you?"

"Once you come clean." Her words may have had a bit of bite, but her eyes were full of love.

"I'm scared. There. I said it." Mattekin didn't make eye contact and seemed to give all his focus to finishing his pie.

"Scared of what, exactly?" River asked. "The bond doesn't hurt. If anything, it's pleasurable and being connected to the others is like a giant hug. It isn't intrusive, but you still know they're all there if you need them."

"Well, sometimes it's intrusive," Skye admitted. "You can't hide strong feelings or emotions from your wing-brothers. You sometimes get more personal insights than you might want or get spillover through the bond."

"Especially when Skye gets hot and heavy," River snickered. "Sorry, Grandma."

"That's fine, dear. A good, healthy sex life is crucial to living a happy life. Are you starting to remember more, River?"

"Yeah, I am." River's voice held a bit of surprise. "I agree with Skye, the smells here are so familiar, and every once in a while, I'll see something and think it looks familiar. Like the cookie jar."

"Fine." Mattekin blurted. "I'm terrified of leaving Underhill and the fae kingdom. I've never gone beyond the borders. I know nothing about the Empire, or technology, or most of the things you all talk about. I hate feeling stupid, and...fuck, it scares the crap out of me. Sorry, Grandma."

"And the bond?" Grandma B. prompted. Giving Skye a meaningful glance.

"I want it so badly. I'm tired of being alone and blazes, that vision... I want that. I don't belong anywhere. I have no herd, and the fae tolerate me, but I'm not one of them. They'll gladly use me for sex, but they never let me forget I'm not as good as they are."

"Wow." Skye got choked up as he felt the emotions and pain. There was a downside to his powers because he couldn't get the thoughts without the feels. "I'm so sorry, Mattekin."

"I need a minute." He looked up at the ceiling. "I promise I'm just stepping outside for a little; I'm not leaving."

Skye watched as the druid left. He finished his pie and took the last sip of milk. "That was so amazing. What kind of berries were they?"

"Dragon berries."

"What?" he and River barked at the same time.

"I thought you liked them?" Her face pinched with worry.

"But...dragon berries..." Skye felt a little woozy as he realized how many there must be in a single slice of pie. He'd eaten every one - as had River. Their eyes met across the table, understanding passing between them with no words or thoughts shared.

"Mattekin needed the pie. The fear was overwhelming him, and he needs your wing and what you offer so badly. I know he looks all tough and sure of himself, but he's not. I love my boys, but Matty's right about how they treat him."

"But if just one berry-" Skye started.

"You're a dragon now, that pie might take the edge off for you and make you feel good. But you'll burn it off quickly. Matty's not as susceptible to the effects as a human, but he'll get more of a hit than you or River. Just enough for him to let go."

"How can he give consent if he's drugged?" Skye argued.

'Dragon berries aren't that powerful,' Mistral reminded him. 'Even when you were human, before you accepted me, did it make you lose control? No, it let you stop worrying and let go.'

And it also made me really horny, Skye pointed out.

'Pretty sure that's primarily because it was with our mate.'

Skye wanted a great retort, but as he thought about it more, he found that Mistral and his grandmother's arguments were sound.

"I should probably check on him," Skye pushed his chair back.

"Can you say why you put the others to sleep?" River asked.

"Keeper said they'd overwhelm Mattekin. He needs to start slow. They'll wake once you and Skye..."

The conversation faded as Skye stepped out the back door. He could see Mattekin not far away, so cleared his throat and walked to him. He stood beside him, shoulder-to-shoulder. Skye worried that Mattekin might not be ready for eye contact yet.

"I get the fear thing. I'm scared most days and was absolutely terrified when they first took me from Earth. I didn't know most of the races even existed, and not only was the technology overwhelming, I didn't know about magic either. So yeah, I get it."

Mattekin turned to look at him, and Skye fought a smile at the image. The druid's hair was still somewhat wet, and he was standing in the yard in pink-flowered robe.

"You keep surprising me."

"My mate says that all the time. You need to know that we'd take care of you. That's what we do. We won't let you fail, and with all of us supporting you, I'm sure you'll pick up what you need to know pretty quickly. Besides, you're a bad-ass druid."

"Ha ha. Don't think anyone has ever described a druid as bad-ass."

"Maybe they didn't see you in a towel," Skye mock whispered, leaning his head a little closer while he stared off into the distance.

Mattekin laughed again. "So you know, I do want this. I can't stop thinking about you. Even without Underhill's helpful visions, my imagination has filled in a lot of details. And it's not just you, River, Garrett, Venci-blazes. First time I met him, all I could think was how good he'd look bent over that fancy desk with his legs spread for me. And Jayce... how can anyone be that attractive?"

"So you know, Jayce doesn't see it. He's probably one of the most innocent of the wing. Don't get me wrong, he's got an appetite, and once you get him going, damn. So we're very protective of him because he's a little clueless."

"That's...hard to believe."

"Venci, on the other hand. We might have to protect you."

"And if I don't want you to?" Mattekin gave him a side-eye, but he was also smiling.

"Venci would be thrilled. If you go through with the bond, you'll know when a wing-brother is interested. You'll also get insights into what they need and want. Doesn't mean communication isn't still important, but I'll say all the interactions with wing-mates are more satisfying because of the bond."

"What I saw with Jhaeros. I was curious how much of my vision was real and how much Underhill made up."

Skye felt the heat rise in his face and felt Mistral's nudge of encouragement. "What you saw was real. I'll confess that I was worried about you and might have checked in on you. I saw parts of the vision. Yeah, that's the way it went down. But before you panic. That was what Jhaeros wanted and was most definitely not typical."

"Too bad. It looked pretty fun to me."

"You do realize the bonding is just the first step? The connection to the wing and the draw to the others grows over time. I don't think any of the guys sleep alone anymore. Not that they're all in one big orgy every day, but they take comfort in each other whenever they can."

"You don't need to sell me on that part." Mattekin turned and looked at Skye. "You really think you'll be able to help me adjust to your world?"

Skye recognized the seriousness of the question, so took his time and thought it through. "Yes. Not only will you have the support of the wing, but I've got some other connections that will help get whatever resources we need."

"Could we do it now? Not sure you noticed, but Underhill has been putting me in your path every time I turned around."

"I kinda got that. By the way, your stag is awesome. I've never seen anything like it."

"You were there! I knew it! I might have been fighting with my stag at the time, and he finally gave in, but he was so pissed at me for moving away from you."

"You had to be ready. And if you think the time is right, we can. I'm guessing that's part of why my mate and the others are sleeping in Grandma's front room. Garrett often joins me for bonding, but I get the sense that might be a bit much for you."

"He's very handsome, but no, I'm not ready for him quite yet," Mattekin admitted.

"How about River?"

Mattekin turned to look back to the house, and then his face split into a grin. "That would be okay."

"Not twisting your arm. River will understand whatever you decide."

"Yeah, I'd like that. Wanna see if we can borrow a blanket?"

Skye followed Mattekin back into the kitchen where his grandmother was washing up the few dishes they'd made. She turned at their entrance and grabbed a towel to dry her hands before she pulled Skye into a hug. She kissed his forehead and gave him a big smile.

"Top of the stairs, first door on the right. River's waiting for you." She leaned in a little closer and whispered into his ear. "Make your grandma proud, Skye. Matty's going to need the full treatment."

Skye pulled back and stared open-mouthed at his grandmother. She put her finger to his chin, pushing it closed.

"Keeper explained things." Grandma B. winked at him before she pulled Mattekin in for a hug of his own. "Don't fight it, Matty. Let go and for once, enjoy yourself. Oh, and don't worry about being quiet. I'm going to spend some time in my moon garden you made for me. It's beautiful out this evening."

"Right," Skye agreed, seeing the likewise stunned look on Mattekin's face. "Don't know if this is normal for you, but I feel like I'm constantly being managed if not outright herded by the universe."

"Or Underhill," Mattekin muttered.

  • Scene 5 *

Skye pushed the door closed after Mattekin stepped into the old-fashioned bedroom, complete with a king-sized canopy bed. Currently occupied by his naked brother. Skye glanced around and saw a familiar bottle on the nightstand. Geez, she even left us lube?

"You in a rush?" Skye asked as his face heated.

"Hey, I'm respectful of my elders. Grandma B. told me to come up here and get myself ready. She also said if Mattekin was able to form sentences when we were done, we screwed it up and had to start over."

Skye laughed because what else could he do. And I thought Underhill was getting pushy when it used the hellhounds; now it's using my own family against me.

"Before we do anything, Mattekin, you need to know that we don't have to have sex to complete the bond," Skye explained.

"But we both know you don't want that option," River said, as he began stroking himself.

"River!" Skye scolded.

'I'm with River. You make me miss out on sex with him, and I'll make your life hell. You won't be able to take three steps without face-planting,' Mistral warned.

"No question that I want the sex option. I've been fantasizing about it since before you even told me what was going on." Mattekin dropped the robe to the floor.

Skye bit his lip again. Mattekin was tall and slender with broad shoulders that tapered to a narrow waist and hips. A nice pert ass and long legs rounded out a drool-worthy body.

'Lucky for you he's not going to let you be stupid,' Mistral said.

Skye began unlacing his vest when he caught River's grin. Mattekin must have seen because he turned, and Skye forgot to breathe. The druid had muscled pecs to match his arms and a large, Celtic tattoo that accentuated them. Yeah, he was stunning. Skye's eyes dropped lower, and a meep might have escaped when he saw that some things from the stag carried over. Mattekin was very well endowed and looked to be even bigger than Garrett.

"Let me help you," Mattekin said, his voice going deep and husky with lust.

Skye realized that the dragon berries had begun to work their magic. Both on him and on the druid. It was hard to tell with River since his brother was pretty much always ready for sex. Mattekin dropped to his knees as he undid the lacings on the leather pants and pulled them down to Skye's knees. That's as far as they got before Mattekin wrapped his mouth around Skye's cock.

"Oh..." Skye moaned as it struck him that Mattekin not only knew what he was doing, he was very much into Skye. His magic immediately reacted to the druid, but fortunately, it was toned down from their first touch. It still raised goosebumps over his body and drew an interesting sound from the stag.

"Come on, you two. Bring it over here," River said.

Mattekin turned and crawled onto the bed, giving Skye a nice look at his ass and the tiny little rosebud that peeked at him as the druid moved.

Skye decided that the biggest downside of the leather was getting it off. It wasn't something you could do in a hurry. He managed to completely strip and joined his brother and Mattekin. Since they were kissing, Skye took the most available option and gripped Mattekin's ass, licking a swath down his crack.

"I should have asked. Is there anything you particularly wanted to do or don't like?"

Mattekin grunted and sat back.

"Tell me. He talks way too much, right?" River said.

"Shut it. This is important," Skye said.

"I'd like you to both fuck me. Elves see my dick and spread their legs like they never get any. It's hard to get them to reciprocate."

"Probably 'cause once you're done they can't move or think. Not to worry, our mates are both hung like you. Skye and I are pros," River said.

"Yeah. So I won't have that problem with the wing?"

Skye laughed. "With this ass? Please. We're a very versatile group. Odds are you can have both at the same time."

"Fuck." Mattekin's eyes darkened, and Skye's dragon could hear the druid's pulse pick up.

"Do you want that?" River asked.

Mattekin seemed at a loss for words, but he did nod.

"We've got to get you warmed up first. River you want heads or tails?"

"Heads, for sure." River grinned and claimed Mattekin's mouth in a hard kiss.

It didn't take long to get Mattekin spread out on his back. Skye had to take a moment just to appreciate the man's body. His wing-mates were going to be so pleased with the new addition and he had to remember to tell Venci. The copper would waste no time in claiming a piece of the druid for himself.

"You two are both so handsome. I've gotten so used to elves that you guys look huge."

"Nah, this is huge." River gripped Mattekin's cock and gave it an appreciative stroke. He zeroed in on Mattekin's right nipple, while Skye took the left. Within seconds, Mattekin was moaning and arching off the bed. The brothers worked their way down his body and took turns licking and sucking at Mattekin's cock.

"This is going to feel so good," River said, gripping the base and giving a squeeze as a clear drop formed on the tip. Skye darted in and lapped it up before River could.

River smirked and gave a nod toward the druid's spread legs. Skye moved out of the way as River straddled the druid without catching his long hair or any other awkwardness. River looked at Skye and grinned. He gripped Mattekin's thighs and spread him farther open, holding his legs back and to the sides so the shifter's pucker was in clear view. "Go for it."

Skye got into position and kissed Mattekin's tender opening as his brother worshiped the huge dick. Skye didn't need to rely on his powers to know his brother was happy. The sounds he made told him that. Mattekin was a little harder because if he didn't read the druid he wasn't sure the poor man wasn't in pain. As they got into it, Skye realized that the stag was desperate. And it was almost painful because he realized what he'd been missing.

Don't know, Mistral. Sort of worries me that elves don't know how to take care of a man. How could they not worship this body? And that dick? Ugh. I can't wait to feel that inside me. It's going to be so good...and fuck, Greggory will probably beg when he meets him.

'Don't worry about our wolf. Did you forget we left him with Arcturus? I'm sure he's a happy pup, taking care of the bear while we're gone,' Mistral said.

True, but now there's more for him. And don't forget Revali, that boy's packing a big one, and he's not even done growing.

Skye used all the techniques Garrett had taught him. It had taken a while because usually the pleasure of Garrett's tongue made Skye forget to pay attention. Skye wasn't yet to his mate's master level, but he had gotten to the point where shifting his tongue to be larger came easily, and he'd learned how to use his magic to read his partner's body.

"Blazes, I'm not going to last!" Mattekin growled around River's cock. The two were in a perfect sixty-nine, each sucking and worshiping each other while Skye gave the stag the best rimming of his life.

Mistral, do you think it still counts as rimming when I'm fucking him with my tongue?

'River was right. You talk too much. Get him relaxed and open. Focus!' Mistral demanded.

"Mmmmm..." Mattekin moaned, and Skye could feel the stag getting close. He looked up to see his brother smiling around the dick shoved down his throat, partially wondering how he managed. Skye was about to give him a warning when he realized his brother already knew.

Skye felt Mattekin's muscles tighten around his tongue, his body clenched, and his brother started slurping and swallowing. If River's dick weren't buried deep in the shifter's throat, he was sure he'd have heard more sounds from the druid. River gradually released the throbbing cock and licked it clean.

"Damn, bro. Stags taste amazing."

"You going to let him have a taste of dragon or are you saving it for his ass?" Skye asked as he resumed his work, adding a finger and pulling his magic.

River climbed off and then turned around to kiss the druid again.

"Am I bonded now?"

Skye grumbled that he had to pull out again and more that he had to adjust his tongue before he could speak. "Seriously? I thought you were a druid. Did you feel magic?"

"Yeah... best blowjob ever."

Skye took a deep breath. "No, you aren't bonded. River just took the edge off so you can enjoy yourself. River, why not show him how good your ass tastes. He's never had a dragon before."

"Gladly." River turned back around and tilted so Mattekin could have his first taste. He wouldn't produce as much slick as he did when he was with his mate, but there'd be enough for a good taste.

He returned to his work and pulled on his magic, sending it into Mattekin and relaxing his hole even more. Once the druid's hole was where Skye wanted it, he began working the other erogenous zones while beginning a nice deep massage of the stag's prostate.

River, would you be willing to share your magic? When Garrett and I join our powers, it makes it much more intense for them. I don't think it changes the bond, but their reaction and the orgasm they get is pretty spectacular.

Fuck yeah. Do you think sometime you could help me do that to Nik?

'Think before you fuck this up,' Mistral warned.

Skye was still a little weirded out by being with his brother "like that," but he'd love to be able to do the same for Garrett. It sure would shut up his mate when he got all cocky and forgot himself. Yeah, if you'd do the same with Garrett.

Fuckin' deal, bro. Now, let's make this stag scream.

River spun around and claimed Mattekin's mouth. Skye grabbed the bottle of oil thinking he liked it better than the dragon-made lube. With River's ass right there, Skye figured he'd help out his brother and used his magic to increase River's slick and relax him while he added some of the pleasant smelling - and tasting - oil. Mattekin was pretty big and even being used to Nik, he'd need some prep. Fortunately, Skye had this part mastered. He slid his fingers into River's tight hole and began working him open while his other hand worked Mattekin's ass.

Damn, bro. You've been practicing. Even River's mental voice had taken on a lusty sultry tone.

I think you're ready if you want him.

Hell, yeah, I want that beast.

Skye held the base of Mattekin's shaft and lined it up so River could ease him in.

"Ohhhhhh... you don't feel like an elf," Mattekin moaned.

"No, buddy, that's pure dragon ass. And I'm going to show you what you've been missing while you've been hiding in the fae forest."

Skye stood and gently put his cock to the druid's relaxed hole, easing in slowly while River picked up his pace.

"Goddess!" Mattekin cried as Skye slid the rest of the way in. Skye's power was hitting all the right nerve endings as he began to thrust. Adding that to River milking his cock with his ass, and the shifter was quickly losing control. The dragon berries might have helped get him here, but Skye was pretty sure he'd burned off any of the effects by now. Which to Skye's mind, was a good thing. He wanted his new wing-mate to remember this.

It didn't take long for Skye and River to get their rhythm. It disappointed Skye a little that the stag didn't have more staying power, but if he expected that Mattekin had never been truly satisfied before, he guessed he could forgive him. Besides, it gave them room to improve.

Skye pulled his magic then reached for River's. His brother's power merged with his just as easily as Garrett's had. He massaged and blended the power getting ready as Mattekin got closer and closer to his orgasm. Then just before he crested, Skye pushed it into the stag, letting the power flow through to every corner of his body, filling him and charging every cell. The bond slammed into place as Mattekin's cock erupted deep inside River. Mattekin's ass tightened and pulsed with his climax and Skye let go, filling the dragon with his cum.

Mattekin screamed, and his eyes rolled back as his body glowed with the magic and shook with the intensity of his release. Before he'd even stopped shaking, Skye and River changed positions. River pushed into the cum-slick hole and fucked hard and fast while Skye slid down on the still dripping cock.

"Too much..." Mattekin whimpered.

Skye pulled a bit more magic and kept the druid hard while getting his body to come back to life. Within moments the stag was groaning again as River pounded into him. It didn't take long before Mattekin was cumming again, filling Skye with his load while River added to the cream Skye had already deposited.

River wrapped his arms around Skye and held him while they both caught their breath. River kissed his shoulders and up his neck. "That was awesome. We should do this more often. We make a pretty good team."

"Yeah, we do," Skye admitted.

River propped his head on Skye's shoulder. "Think you did it again. He's out, isn't he?"

"Yup. Guess I'll have to carry him back."
