Chapter One
I rolled over, little did I know, I rolled right into the direct rays of the raising sun. I quietly cursed myself and tried to roll over again but Danny already had his arms around me. And when he is sleep, he's not moving. But it's ok because it helps me get my thoughts collected.
Danny and I met 2 years ago. I had no idea that we were going to get this serious. Guess I should probably tell you I am. Well my name is Tyler Matthews. I am just an average kid. I have sandy brown hair and I have brown eyes. I am about 5'6" and I weigh 140 pounds. You know to this day I still don't see what he sees in me, but I guess there is something, so why don't I tell you my story and maybe you'll be able to help me.
"You know Tyler," Dr. Valnesheo, my therapist, sighed. "If you don't talk, I can't help you."
"I don't understand why I am here in the first place, Dr. Valnesheo." I said looking out the window.
It had been second month, since I started my therapy. I hadn't said very much and I didn't want to. I mean, to me, I had no reason to be there. I was just a regular kid.
"Tyler, we don't need to be formal here. I call you by your first name, you can do the same." She said changing subjects. "And you know why you're here, Tyler."
"Yea," I said smugly. "I am here because I have nightmares; does that mean that everyone who has nightmares should be in this room with me?" I turned and looked at her for the first time in the hour I was there.
"No," she sighed as she pushed her dark red hair of her green eyes. "But when a child loses their mother and tries to commit suicide, that child has to be in this room and talk to me." She said simply.
Well... I guess I did have some issues here.
I walked around to a chair that faced her and I slumped down. I looked down feet and the up at her. "I just miss her so much." I said for the first time, in two months, since my mother, Sterling Matthews, died in June. "I wish it could have been me instead of her. My mom and dad were just so happy. And now she is dead all because didn't want to go pick her up." I said tearing up. "I am sure my dad hates me now." My tears now ran down my face.
"Tyler," her voice was so sweet and soft. "I happen to know for a fact that your father doesn't hate you. He wants to you be happy, which is why you are here." She said as the timer beeped.
"Looks like our time is up." I said wiping my tears away and standing.
"But remember anytime you need to talk, I am only a phone call away." She said standing with me. "I'll walk you out." She said walking me to the door.
I walked out the door and my father was waiting for me with a weak smile in his face. He really has been good through all of this. I just wish there was something I could do to help him cope.
"Hi dad." I said.
"Hey Ty," he said. "You feeling better?" he asked coming closer, he look tired. I guess this was just as hard on him as it was on me.
"Yea," I nodded, "I think I am."
He smiled and pulled me into a bear hug, "Thank god." He said.
"I think this is going to be Tyler's last visit for awhile, Mr. Matthews. There nothing I can do for him right now." She said.
"But-," my dad went to say but she cut him off.
"I have faith that Tyler won't digress." She said to my dad, then looked at me, "I believe in you kid." She said messing up my hair.
"Ok, if you say so." My dad looked at her questioningly and she nodded. "Well I guess we should get going." My dad looked down at me then his eyes lit up, "I have a surprise for you anyway."
"What is it?" I said when we got out of the building.
"It's a surprise kid that means you're not supposed to know."
"You can't do that." I said walking in front of him and stopping him. "It has to be against some type of rule."
"Well, rules were made to be broken." He said.
"Where was this guy when I got in trouble at school?" my words dripping with sarcasm.
"Sleeping no doubt." He said with a sly smile as he walked around me. I could see that he liked they way I was acting.
"So not funny." I said finally catching up with him.
"I thought it was,"
"I am guessing you did." I said pushing him. "Dad," I said getting serious. "Do you think I am better?" I said.
He thought, "Well you seem to be, but why don't we just wait before start jumping to any conclusions." He said.
"Ok," I said.
Dad then changed the subject then we started talking about our days and the upcoming school year.
When we pulled into the driveway there was a tarp over some type of car. I looked at my dad and the car.
"Dad," I said as we got out of the car, "What is that?" I said pointing at the tarp.
"Why don't you go see?" He said.
"Dad this is too early," I said walking towards the house.
"Wait!" he said walking around in front of me. "Now, Dr. Valnesheo said it was good idea that I give this to you. And she said if you didn't take it, I should force you to at least drive it once," he said reaching in his pocket and taking the keys out. "Please?" he said.
I looked at the keys he held over my hand, I could feel my heart beating in my chest. I couldn't say no to him. Even if I thought I wasn't ready. "Ok," I said taking the keys from him.
He smiled, "I have been waiting 2 months for this day." He said walking over the covered vehicle. "Your mom and I were talking about getting this for you, and I think she would have wanted you to have still. SO..." he said pulling the tarp of.
My eyes just about fell out of my head. It was my dream car. It was a Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS, and it was glossy jet black. My mouth fell open; I looked at my dad and then the car.
"Do you like it?" he asked.
"Yes." I gasped. I looked up at him again.
"It's yours; go take it for a spin. Oh and Chloe supplied the music. I think she wants you to see her. Take your time. It's time to live life again kid." My dad said looking at me and then walking away and going in the house.
He left me looking at the car. I finally decided to get in the car. I opened the door and looked inside. It had leather interior, black leather. I sat down; I took the time to look at everything. Every little detail.
I looked at the keys again. "Here goes nothing." I said putting the keys in the ignition. The engine revved and soft music came on. I recognized it immediately; it was Massive Attack's Tear Drop. I put the car in reverse, shifted into first, and headed in the direction of Chloe's house.
I pulled into the driveway of the Stevenson's house. I turned the car off and got out. I walked up to the front of the door and walked right in, like I always do.
"Chloe!" I yelled.
"Tyler?" Chloe said coming out the kitchen drying her hands on a dishtowel.
"The one and only." I said and smiled.
It's been months since I had since Chloe. The last time I saw her, it was my mother's funeral. And that's when I told all my friends that I needed to be alone. It took Chloe awhile to understand this but she was still somewhere in the background.
"Oh my god!" she said hugging me. "I have missed you so much!" I thought she was going to squeeze the life out of me. "Are you better?" she looked at me.
"Well, Dr. Valnesheo thinks so." I said walking into the living room. "She convinced dad it was ok to buy me a car. Everyone said she was good." I said.
"The best in her field. But tis great you are better." She said sitting next to me. "So you have any plans for tonight?"
"Not really, I just came over to hang out." I said. Looking down at her.
"I glad you came over." She said.
The night was pretty much just like every other Chloe and I hung out. We ate everything under the sun, she told me about the cute guys that come into the store she worked at, and who did this and that, you know all the gossip.
I didn't actually get out of there until 2:23 in the morning. And even then I had to fight to get out. She made me promise that I wouldn't take so long in coming back and seeing her again.
I walked into the house to find dad sleeping on the couch. I couldn't help but smile. Poor guy, he spends so much time worrying about me that he neglects himself. I went to the couch, covered him in a blanket, and kissed him.
I turned to walk up the steps to my room. When I heard a faint "I love you."
When I got to my room I decided to check my email. I signed on and saw that there was an email from someone. The subject was "Thanks for the kind words." So I opened it so see what it was. It read-
"Tyler,
Sorry it took me so long to write back to you, but I have been reading your email over and over again. The words were like someone hugging me when I needed them. I just accepted that I am gay a couple months ago but I can't tell anyone about it, not even my best friend of 17 years. So it was nice to hear some tell me that things will be ok. If you don't mind I put you on my buddy list, so we can talk some more. I hope to talk to you later.
Dan"
When I was done reading that, I wanted to go hug this kid. He seems to have rough. I looked at the address on the email and decided to him on my buddy list.
Just as I was doing that a message came up.
"Tyler?" it's said.
"That would be me." I typed back.
After a couple second a new message came up, "Cool, I have been waiting to talk to you." Another one popped up. "This is Dan."
"Oh cool!" I sent "So are things getting better?" I sent.
"Yea, you could say that." He said.
"Cool." I said.
"So is everything ok?" he sent, and then added, "You know with your mother's death and everything?"
I was a little blown away by the question. I really didn't remember telling him about that. I guess he took my silence as a bad thing.
"I am sorry." He sent, "It wasn't my business to ask that question."
"No, no it's not that. It's just that..." I sent to him.
"What?" he wrote back.
"Well, I never really thought about that question so much." I sent, and then my mind just started spewing how I felt. Things I thought I never really thought I felt, but there it was.
When I was finish, I had realized I just spent a good part of 45 minutes on telling him how I felt.
We decided to change subjects and our conversation drifted from topic to topic. Our last conversation ended up being about what we found attractive in a guy and what we thought was sexy. Before I knew it, it was almost six in the morning.
"I guess I should be getting off." He sent me. "I have football practice in about 4 hours."
"Already?" I sent. "But school doesn't start for another month." I sent.
"We have been in practice for a month now. Schools always do it that way." He sent.
"Well, you know that's another thing I find sexy." I sent. "I love jocks." I typed and sent.
"Ah, well then I think I would be sexy to you." He sent. "But with that I have to end this conversation. But can I ask you a question?"
"Sure." I sent back.
"Can I have you number?" he typed.
"Yeah," and I sent it to him. Then I sent to him my number and told him to call me when he got a chance. With that he signed off.
So I decided that this would the perfect time to sleep. So I undressed from my clothes and slid into bed and before I knew it I was sleep.
