The Special Memories by Gerry Taylor
Chapter 7 - The Manumission
One clear, direct result of the Sheik's dinner was Aziz's freedom. I had all the slaves assembled after their dinner the following evening. In anticipation of the event, I had the best jewellers in Dahra prepare and deliver a golden fly-swish to me at the Bank.
To my mind, it had to be an occasion that all would remember for a long time, so I also had Marko and Flavio make up a hundred litres each of strawberry and chocolate ice cream to follow the now customary bowl of soup, which preceded the two slave biscuit regime.
When all the medical staff, the overseers and the slaves were assembled, it was clear to all, but the blind, that something important was afoot, particularly since all the slaves of the Aloe Palace were in attendance as well. Only the driver of the Bank's limousine was left in the Aloe Palace as an ad-hoc porter for the night.
`The Aloe Palace and the Lime Palace are now my homes as they are now your homes. As my slaves, I have tried to treat you well and with fairness. No one here can say that the life is too hard or too harsh and if you can remember from those places where you have been before here, you will agree.'
'The work you do here is important to me, because it pleases me. It pleases me that you are fit and healthy, that you are appreciated and wanted here, that you are well looked after by your own personal buddy, just as you look after your buddy.'
'What I am about to do now is to protect you all for the future. One of the changes needed at the Palace is the following' and I read out Aziz's Declaration of Freedom, which ended with the phrase 'and of this day, Aziz al-Aziz is now a freeman'.'
'Aziz, please come forward.'
The head of household seemed unable to move and Yedo, his personal slave by his side, had to take his elbow and bring him forward.
I handed him his Declaration of Freedom and then to the slaves I said, 'I also give Aziz al-Aziz this symbol of his authority as a Master in these Palaces with myself and young Master Jack,' and I held up the golden fly-swish for all to see.
Taking Aziz black onyx fly-swish from him, I broke it underfoot with a single blow of my heel and again holding up the golden fly-swish, I handed it to him.
There was a sound like thunder for the massed slaves who started to chant 'Aziz! Aziz! Aziz!'
As the shouts were chanted, I nodded to Flavio who signalled a team around him and Marko and they went into the kitchens.
I think that in that one moment, the chanting slaves had forgotten just how hard, at times, a head of household Aziz could be, but were rejoicing in him obtaining something that each of them had once, but had no longer and something which some in the deep recesses of their soul might still aspire to.
I held up a hand and silence fell after some seconds, 'To celebrate this evening for all, Flavio and Marko have prepared something extra for us all to eat.'
With that Flavio, Marko, Bob, Marek and Jerzy and a team of others came out with the large trays with bowls of ice cream in strawberry and chocolate.
It was noticeable how quickly people, including slaves adapt. One buddy took a bowl of strawberry and the other buddy slave took a bowl of chocolate. Never was food more silently consumed, nor so many bowls licked totally clean. When it was clear that the last of the slaves had finished eating, someone started a very quite tapping of a spoon on the side of the bowl and it was taken up by all.
I told Flavio and Marko to stand up and take a bow, which they embarrassedly did. Flavio, all Italian, merely raised his shoulders and put his hands palms up towards the evening sky, as if to say 'all in a day's work', while Marko was smiling looking down at the ground and afraid to look out at the applauding slaves. When he shyly glanced over at me, I gave him a wink and then he did smile broadly.
Aziz's eyes were glowing with happiness in the evening sunlight. I mentioned to him that people from the Ministry of the Interior would be expected the following morning to remove the GPS bracelet.
`Aziz, please ensure that you have your Declaration of Freedom at hand in the morning, our visitors will need to see it.'
The memorable evening was drawing to its natural close, so I bid all the overseers and slaves a good night.
Early next morning, just after inspection and breakfast, when the slaves were just departing for their various tasks, two jeeps arrived. One brought two technicians from the Ministry of the Interior; the other, my friend the Police Captain and his assistant.
Though the police were as usual heavily armed, they and the technicians were businesslike and respectful. The area Police Captain greeted me and Aziz warmly and I invited everybody into one of the sitting rooms, though nobody sat down.
The Police Captain had to see the Declaration of Freedom at which he just glanced, following the legally required procedure and he nodded to the two technicians. Not once did any of the government technicians give an order. The assistant Captain asked permission totest the code signal. Aziz nodded too overcome to speak. The Captain took out the pre-programmed locator device, pressed a button and there was a beep'. The Captain asked Aziz if he would be so kind as to let them check the SIN. Aziz opened his dish-dash to reveal his SIN number on his left chest. The Captain quickly read it off, looked at the number on the screen and directed a thank you' to Aziz.
Aziz closed the top of his dish-dash. One of the technicians requested him to place his right foot on a chair, got down on one knee before him, applied the bolt cutter type apparatus to the GPS bracelet and with a plop', it was off. The technician took the bracelet off Aziz's ankle and pocketed it with a thank you' to Aziz.
The Captain took his leave of both of us.
I said `Yedo will show you out.'
The room was strangely quiet when the whole crew had departed and Aziz stood there alone. It was all over in less than fifteen minutes.
`Master, I cannot find words enough to thank you,' Aziz started to say.
Aziz, it is now Jonathan' and you don't have to find any words. You have given great and valuable service to three Masters and a Mistress. Now you have come and will come into your own, as your own Master.'
`I will find it difficult. Last night I hardly slept as Yedo will attest. Freedom after all these years feels strange and like a new friend at my side whom I don't yet recognise. I don't rightly know what to do, or how I will do it as I direct my own destiny.'
`For the moment, Aziz, your duties will continue the same. I have some suggestions to put to you later on, which I think will please you. But let us take one thing at a time. Tariq al-Akhri helped me secure your freedom and the Sheik himself sent his congratulations. It appears his father knew your father and respected him. Now, Aziz, I have to move and get to the Bank. We shall speak again this evening.'
`Yes, Ma...Yes, Jonathan.'
We both smiled at his self-correction and leaning close I embraced the new freeman and quickly left for the Bank.
