CH 7.

It was out of place. It was very out of place Marc thought as he looked at the yellow school bus at the end of the mansion's walkway. He stood at the door while his uncle approached with Ken and Trevor in tow.

Uncle T was shoving books into their backpacks. He also had a handful of school supplies he was adding in there.

"Dammit, I can't believe I overslept," Uncle T was muttering. "I could have asked any of the other workers to do it, but no, no it had to be me." Uncle T was still in his pajamas, which was nothing more than a white t shirt and loose shorts.

"Hi Marc," Uncle T said, acknowledging his nephew's presence as he got to the door. The two male Cowmen came up behind him. Uncle T handed them their bags and watched as they put them on.

Marc noted that Trevor was suffering from a serious case of bed head. Trevor's dress shirt was wrinkled and not completely tucked into his khaki pants. Ken however was primped and pristine. Not a hair on his head was out of place. He filled out his clothes nicely too. From the look on his face, Ken was more excited to go to school than Trevor.

"You're going to school too?" Marc looked at Trevor.

"What else does it look like I'm doing?" Trevor said groggily. He then got a look of realization, "Sorry, I didn't mean that. It's too early in the morning to be nice."

The bus driver honked the horn grabbing everyone's attention.

"Come on we have to go!" Ken said grabbing Trevor's hand and pulling him along.

"It's too early to run." Trevor whined, allowing himself to be dragged.

"Bye!" The two waved as they went down the walkway to the bus.

"Don't forget I packed you lunches in the bottom of your bags!" Uncle T shouted out.

Ken and Trevor disappeared onto the bus. They were both in their own morning world, they didn't even hear him.

Marc let out laugh. "You're like their mom."

"What's so funny about that," Uncle T said, putting his hand on his hips being dramatic.

The two waved as the bus drove off.

"Nothing, I never thought of you being a parent though." Marc said turning his attention back to his uncle.

"Marc, I've been a parent to these Cowmen more times than I can count. It's my job to raise and guide them."

Marc thought about the question Xander had asked him at the party. It dawned on him then that he never answered it. He hoped Xander didn't come back looking for an answer. Marc wasn't ready for that kind of responsibility.

Uncle T continued, "I'll admit it's been awhile since I've done personal things for any Cowmen." Uncle T and Marc walked inside.

"What do you mean?" Marc closed the door behind them.

"Back in the early days, when it was just me. I wasn't looking to start a farm. I was just helping raise some kids. Then surprise! They weren't human. Living with them, learning to help them through the world made me to help take care of more. "

Uncle T looked around the main hall of the house. Marc followed his eyes. The high ceiling the, the stairs, The east and west wings. Uncle T was taking in all of it.

Marc saw a tear roll down his uncle's face.

"Ya know, I kind of missed it. Taking care of the Cowmen like that. Packing their bags, sending them off to school, helping them with homework, sitting with them and getting to know them."

Marc squinted his eyebrows. "Don't you already do that. I mean you seem to know everyone on the farm."

Uncle T let out a sad chuckle, "You don't understand. I have workers that take care of all that now and even if they don't most of the Cowmen here have parents that do that."

"Really?" Marc was shocked he hadn't seen any interaction between any Cowmen and their child. Then he thought due to their aging a Cowmen could be almost the same age as their parents. Marc found that jarring.

Marc followed Uncle T into the dining room. "Yeah, you just missed out on it because it's the beginning of summer. That means all our Cowmen from our personal brood have already aged up."

The dining room table was decked out with breakfast food per usual. Uncle T and Marc sat down, however their conversation was not over yet.

"Personal brood?"

Uncle T scooped a serving of eggs on his plate "Ah, we try to get our Cowmen to breed at the same time. All farms have their own time. It isn't anything special. That's mainly what the breeding stations are for. Of course, this isn't prison. We can't tell someone when and when not to have sex. They can have babies anytime but having a majority at once keeps things cohesive. That's why breeders are important for farms."

"Do, breeders only have babies?" Marc asked reaching for the pile of bacon in front of him.

A smile appeared on Uncle T's face "I'm glad you're asking questions. I think you're starting to like it here."

Marc wished he had a remark, but honestly ever since he got kissed by both boys all he could think about what a Cowman's life was like. Heather said sexuality didn't matter to them. What else didn't matter? and what did? He needed to know.

"Reproducing is the primary function of the breeders. We pair up people with good genes and ask them to... you know," Uncle T waved his hand about.

"Have sex." Marc finished.

"Exactly. It's not always straight forward though. Cowmen can be so particular."

Uncle T could see Marc didn't understand so he explained. "For example, there are male Cowmen that refuse to get impregnated. Most don't mind, but it can be a problem when they pop up. It's not normally an issue but..."

"If you have two in the room and no one bottoms, there's no baby." Marc finished. It didn't take a genius to know two tops don't make a bottom.

"Which means we can't combine their good genes in an offspring." Uncle had finished piling food on his plate. "That sucks but we'd never force them to copulate. Then we'd be no better than the places were Ken and Trevor came from. I mean having Cowmen with good genes, who produce good milk is a staple of any successful farm. But forcefully making that happen is not the way to go about it." Uncle T shook his head with a look of disgust.

"Regardless, they'd have been disappointed with Trevor not making milk yet." Marc said.

Uncle T gave Marc a curious look. "I guess Trevor told you that. That's good it means he trust you. I think Trevor's previous "guardians" if that's what we'll call them. Were much more interested in making their Cowmen fight." The word `guardians' left Uncle T's mouth seeped in anger.

"Anyways, I wasn't finished about breeding. Children that aren't apart of the normal breeding season can easily be ostracized."

"Like Ken and Trevor?" Marc asked.

"Yep." They aren't from our farm and are not the same age as the others. A farmer usually wants to shoot for Cowmen in the same age brackets. I needed these two here early before all the rest though."

"All the rest?"

"Yeah we have more Cowmen coming. Mostly Cowmen in the same age bracket as Trevor and Ken, but a lot of their parents are coming too."

"Will they from the same places as Ken and Trevor."

"Definitely not! These Cowmen will be coming from other farms."

"Why?"

"Isn't it obvious. It prevents inbreeding. We bring in fresh blood and flush out the old."

"You send the Cowmen away?"

"Yes. I will admit we try to hang on to our top breeders and milk producers, but if they insist, we let them go. Cowmen understand that it's for the better health of all the farms if they move every so often."

"They volunteer for this I'm guessing?" Marc asked eating his food.

"See, now you're starting to get the hang of how things work here. A week before you came, I said goodbye to one of our top breeders. He wanted to follow a female cowman." Uncle T took a bite out of his bacon.

"We usually start with a list of who we're looking for to come to the farm and the other farms do the same. Some families can't bear to be separated and come to the farm as well."

"Hmm," Mark said digesting the info.

"This new group coming should welcome Trevor and Ken with open arms. That means there'll be more kids around your age too. At least for a while."

That was true. Marc hadn't even considered the fact more kids meant he could make more friends.

"So, you'll have a lot more backpacks to do huh?" Marc joked.

"No way, most of the kids don't need to go to school anymore. The ones that do the workers can handle. I draw the line at two."

"They don't need to go to school, why not?"

"It is summer Marc. Are you the only one allowed time off?" Uncle said in a tone that made it clear he was teasing.

"No, but what about Ken and Trevor? If these guys are all the same age, then why—

"Ken and Trevor have never gone to school. These other Cowmen did. What they learn there is more than Math, English and Science. They learn about their culture. And I don't care how good I am. That's something I can't teach them. This summer school is to try and cram as much information they need in their heads before their shift. Trevor will be shifting soon and then Ken right behind him."

"I can see how Ken a bit behind, but Trevor already knows about being a Cowmen. He's the one that told me about the aging thing and that making milk is a source of pride." Marc defended.

"I can tell you, that is only a fraction of what he should know. Trevor's farm only told him about things they deemed important for Cowmen. And Ken's... well, they didn't teach that poor boy anything."

Uncle T and Marc ate the rest of breakfast in silence.

The two separated with Uncle T going to work and Marc returning to his room.

Once in there, Marc pulled out his laptop. He logged on after a few unsuccessful attempts. His laptop had been neglected since he got here and recalling his password took a minute.

Marc still wanted to pick Uncle T's brain some more about his experiences with Cowmen, but there was something else he could do. He could search the general information. There had to be thousands of articles dedicated to them. In his hometown Marc never once thought of doing this, not even out of curiosity. Cowmen as a concept were out of the reality that he lived in there. He never encountered any, none lived there, no farms. Not to mention, the Cowmen milk his town imported, was only bought by the rich.

Today was different he wanted to know. Marc had never thought of himself as strange for not looking into Cowmen. He didn't expect straight people to look at coming out videos or LGBT things. Even if they did, did they care about what was being expressed? Marc stopped at that thought. Maybe there were some that did. If straight people did that, then maybe there were humans that looked up Cowmen. After all, they exist and shouldn't that reason enough to care.

Marc sighed to himself. He wished he had that sort of outlook long ago. Then maybe he wouldn't have been so clueless when it came to life on the farm.

Marc typed in the word `Cowmen' into the search engine and began.

The first paper Marc clicked was boring and the webpage was riddled with ads. He clicked onto another and found it to be visually more appealing. As he read though, he couldn't find any information that was different than what he learned in school.

There was one passage that stood out to him as he read. It was under a section titled `The Appearance of Cowmen'. It was discussing the 1st generation of Cowmen. It said Cowmen were not some alien species, or science experiment gone wrong. Apparently, millions of people across the globe went to sleep and woke up changed. These were the original Cowmen that had the horns and the tails, but none of those traits were passed to their offspring. The article suggested it was a way to help them assimilate better into society.

The first wave of Cowmen had caused quite and uproar leading to public panic, outrage, and in the most extreme cases death. Governments across the globe tried to handle their populations, after extensive test and studies done the original people affected showed no change in personality or anything else. The global public was no longer convinced aliens were making a move to steal the planet.

Marc laughed. It was all quite absurd he couldn't imagine any of the Cowmen he met as evil. Marc stopped laughing when he realized it must have been quite shocking at the time. Going to bed with your partner only to have them be something else in the morning, or siblings that share the same room, or a friend that was staying over for the night.

Marc felt a cold chill travel down his spine. Judging on how he reacted to Ken he probably would have screwed that up to. Marc didn't think of himself as a coward but staring something in the face that can kill you surprisingly humbles a person. Marc shook off his bad feeling. Then he read on.

All Cowmen after that initial appearance have only ever been born. No one knows why Cowmen are here. If there's a reason for it. Some believe they were sent by a higher power. Others think they should be eradicated.

The writer of the article took a neutral stance with ending of the appearance section. Marc kept reading, but it went back into stuff he already knew. Grammar things like `Cowmen' should be capitalized and refers to both the species and plural form, while singular is cowman. Cowmen males can get pregnant blah, blah, blah.

Marc didn't want to reread this. He got all that out of his middle school textbook. His history books never wasted more than two pages on Cowmen. Marc went back onto the search engine. He typed `Cowmen life.'

Various pictures of Cowmen on farms came up. Marc retyped his search to `Cowmen life in cities'.

The first link that popped up was a video, titled `Candid Cowmen Close Up'. In the Thumbnail were two men both very fit, but the one on the right was slimmer and taller. He had on casual clothes. While the one on the left was dressed in gym clothes. Marc decided to click on the video. 100% percent not based on how hot the guys were.

The video opened with a cool opening title sequence as, the host, a cute Korean 20 something introduced herself and the platform. Then she introduced her guests. Saleem, the hot Israeli guy in the casual wear, and a dirty blond-haired German Aden in gym clothes. They had been born overseas. but immigrated to the states with their parents.

Sarah, the host, asked them a series of general questions how, there day was going, what do they like to eat? Etc. She was trying to show Cowmen were just like everybody else. Marc dragged the video ahead a bit.

"So how are you guys finding life in LA? Being a Cowmen do you find it easy living here?" Sarah said.

Ayden answered first "I like it here, if it rains though, everyone forgets how to drive. Besides that, I gotta drain these bad boys like every 4-5 days." Ayden poked his Pecs. "If that happens, I usually plan it, so I don't change my schedule."

Saleem spoke, "For me I have to get milked every other week. So, My life his super easy. My life-mate here has super productive glands." Saleem reached over and squeezed Ayden's Pecs. "I mean their fun to sleep on when there so pillowy, but I like his firm body more."

Sarah spoke, "Going off what you said, Saleem you two are life mates. Can you explain what that means for the audience at home?"

Saleem spoke clear and concise. "A life-mate is, exactly what is sounds like. A mate for life. It's like saying your partner for life. Nowadays most Cowmen around humans will just say boyfriend/girlfriend for sake of clarity. Yet, it's a bit different."

"How so?" Sarah asked

Ayden decided to pitch in, "The term originally came from farms. A lot of cowmen that were breeders wanted others to know they had a partner outside of what they do. I think today Cowmen use it to express our undying love."

Saleem replied with, "Really? I just thought it meant, we should be exclusive," The two Cowmen shared a laugh.

Marc had been surprised with the whole life-mate thing. Saleem and Ayden looked more like two bros hanging out than guys in love.

Ayden went back to his answer, "But yeah, if you want a life-mate today. It's basically and marriage proposal. So, most breeders won't have one."

"So more serious than `going steady', but less expensive than buying the ring?" Sarah added.

Marc clicked off the video. He had enjoyed watching it, but he wanted to know more about the daily routine. Saleem and Ayden didn't spend a lot of time on theirs and the video was moving in different direction.

Marc was able to find a Newspaper interview with a male and female Cowmen detailing their lives. The female married a guy on a farm and moved him off there. He was already working for a business. She encouraged him to give it a try leaving and now they're married. The other interviewee was single. He chronicled living in the city. He shared his parent didn't live on a farm, therefore he had never been on one.

Marc searched another topic. Ever since he'd gotten kissed, he had a big question on his mind. He looked up human and Cowmen relationships.

The results were nonsensical. The first link going to a magazine cover photo with "I Married A Cowman" as the Headline. Marc clicked off and went to the next, which was news about a reality show staring various couples. Marc had to go to the dreaded page two of search results, before he found serious inquires.

Marc thought something about these relationships would blow his mind, but it was all mundane stuff. Nothing he couldn't have guessed himself. The only thing worth noting among all the articles he scanned on page two was a child born from a human and a cowman. The child is usually a cowman. Cowman genes often overwrote human genes.

Marc scoffed to himself, "Always with the genes with these guys." He put his head back looked at the ceiling. He had more questions, but which to ask first?

"Why are Cowmen dying out?" He recalled Xander saying that but didn't get how that'd be possible. Cowmen could probably multiply rapidly with how fast they grow.

After hitting enter Marc expected research papers, or more news articles to pop up, yet the whole first page was missing person stories and reports. The second page continued the trend. It wasn't until page 5 it made sense.

A link's header read "Number of Missing Cowmen Grows is Extinction on the way?"

Marc clicked on it opening the page. It was a string of missing person's reports across the globe. It talked about farmers sharing the last known whereabouts of those in question. The writer used a missing person story from Peru to tie all the stories together. It went as followed:

"It was a warm Saturday last June when Farmer Diego reported his missing cowman Fernando. Fernando was known for being more rambunctious and wilder than his peers. Him disappearing for a night or two was not anything new. However, after day three Diego was on high alert. His farm' is a house and only consist of 20 workers. Locals have compared it to a group home or hostel. It wasn't strange for Cowmen tourist to stay there for a time. The police investigated but to no avail. A few weeks later several more Cowmen would go missing. The town would collectively conduct a search party. There were no answer's in sight. Farmer Diego did not give up looking for them. On the last day in August one of the farm workers arrived at work to find the entire farmhouse empty. No sign of Farmer Diego anywhere. When questioned by the police the worker shared Farmer Diego didn't have enough money to pay workers overnight. The workers words were He didn't need help keeping them in check. He had raised most of them since they were kids.'"

Marc had to stop reading. Out of all the missing person stories this was the only one that ended up with the whole farm disappearing. The other farmers listed 1 or 2 people missing, but if Farmer Diego had such a small place, he probably knew each personally. This was something he couldn't let go.

Marc didn't want to go further with this topic. The answer was darker than he expected. He needed a change of pace. There was only one other huge mystery about Cowmen that was at the forefront of his thoughts. He went back to the search bar and typed one word.

Bullmen.
