Come Sail Away

Chapter 1

Have you ever felt so utterly alone, that ever cell in your body ached? I was once told that there were far worse things than being alone. At this moment, I couldn't think of a single one. I hated visiting my brother. He had a perfect life, perfect wife, and perfect Job. The only reason I even tolerated coming up to Kenosha, Wisconsin to visit, was the Lake. I love the water. To me there is nothing more relaxing. Sitting and looking out across a vast body of water. Today was no exception, there was a slight breeze coming in Off the lake and just a hint of chill to the air. It's briskness had a small bite to it. Enough That it made my numbness seem to wear off, even if it was only for a short time. I found my favorite bench and sat. I grabbed my backpack and rechecked my supplies. Book, Pops, Smokes. Like a grocery list, I methodically checked through my bag for what I felt I needed for the day.

I reached in and grabbed a book. I had started reading this a week ago, and thought it to be fitting of my mood. Edgar Allen Poe. Talk about someone who was depressed, and troubled. I sat and read through The Raven once again. Ever time I read it; I understood more of what he was feeling. I stared out onto the water, letting my mind drift in and out of conscious thought. Remembering another day when there was a chill in the air....

It was a cold morning, and it was suppose to have snowed last night. I glanced at the clock and noticed that I had just a little over 45 minutes before I had to meet Chuck over at the tennis courts. I hauled my ass out of bed, and ran to the window. Nope, no snow to be seen anywhere. As quick as I could I ran to the bathroom and jumped in the shower. I was running around trying to hurry as fast as I could. I glanced at the mirror and seen the same reflection I had seen for the past 18 years of my life. Nothing special, 5'10" Brown hair, blue eyes, and a medium to stocky like football player build. I sighed; maybe my mom thought I was good looking. But the fish sure weren't jumping in the Boat. I wasn't going to play tennis on a November morning; I was going to play Street Hockey. Yep, not a better place to play than a tennis court. You got your fence all the way around, and with the net down, the length was just about right. I was hoping that today we were going to have a better showing than last weekend. I finished getting dressed and ran out the door. I threw my stuff in the back of my truck. Net, sticks and drinks, and as usual I was the first to arrive. Damn that makes me mad, why the hell do you say your going to be here at 10:30, when you know your ass isn't going to show till 11:00. I placed the net at one end of the court and started my warm ups. We liked using a tennis ball for a puck. When you reached back and let that slap shot go, man you could you make that bitch scream. Well as usual Chuck's truck came screaming to a halt. Lets see what time it is. 11:10. I had to laugh to myself, I mean I could have stayed in bed. I knew he was going to be late. I just shook my head as I glanced over to the cars that had followed him in to the park. I recognized the usual faces. Fresh meat. Like taking candy away from a baby.

I made a couple more shots and felt good enough to take the net for warm ups. Donning the glove and goalie stick I stepped in net and let these guys give me there best. Chuck was the only one that could consistently get it by me. That shit eating grin he would cock on his face as the ball would sail past me on the weak side. Taking the impossible angle shots and getting them to go in was what he lived for. I sized up everyone and noticed that the teams were going to be lopsided. Chuck had mentioned that Darin was supposed to meet them at work this morning. When he didn't show he called. His brother said he was still in bed. And from what he could see, wasn't getting up anytime soon. I didn't know Darin all that well. He worked with Chuck at the chicken joint and we had partied once. That's about all I knew of him. Chuck said he lived close and was going to go over and see if he could get his ass out of bed. We continued to screw around, and Chuck took off down the road in search of our missing player.

We had a little half court going on when his truck pulled back into the park. I was playing D and really didn't notice when he walked up. I was screwing with this rookie's chain and taunting him good. I stole the ball and iced it down to the other end to stop their offense this time around. When I glanced up, I wasn't ready for what I saw. Kyle had struck out with getting Darin to come, so his brother came instead. He looked to be young, I really couldn't tell his age. He stood about 5' 10" and had brown hair, and the most adorable face that could have ever graced an angel. I stole my glances and tried not to make it obvious that I was staring. He took his warm up shots, while Chuck was in net warming up a little. I couldn't help but notice the small hole in his jeans at the seat of his pants. I'm not really sure if it was a tear, or the material was worn through. I leaned back against the fence and just watched this kid. He was graceful and seemed to have pretty good control of the ball. I admired the way he seemed to almost float around the court. Chuck was really giving him the shit now, and I couldn't help but smile. Chuck had this incredible gift of making you feel like shit with just a mere laugh.

I watched as Chuck warmed up and noticed that he seemed as ready as I was. I really wanted this kid on my team. I tried to talk to him, and found I was tongue tied all of a sudden. When I glanced in his direction, I found I was scared. Worried that he would notice I couldn't keep my eyes off of him. As you could have guessed earlier, I usually don't have a problem of talking shit, hell I have never have had a problem of talking to anyone. Why now. Why this kid? What made him so special that he could make my chest feel like it was ready to explode. My mouth goes dry and my head feel dizzy. Teams were being picked and Chuck and the new kid were on the opposite team. I finally heard his name. His name was Brian. Fitting I thought, he looked like a Brian. The game started, Chuck was playing center and I was forced back to playing Defense. Hopefully with a little stick checking I could keep Chuck down to just a hand full of goals. I smiled as I seen Brian putting on the glove and grabbing the goalie stick. An evil grin appeared on my face. I was going to light this kid up. As usual Chuck had all the shots. Giving his team a 3-goal lead in a matter of what seemed like a few minutes. I called time out and grouped our team back by the net. We discussed a few plays and went strong on Offense. I played back at what would be the blue line. Letting them set me up for the slap shot, and hoping for a knock in on any rebounds. I let some serious shots fly on goal and I was starting to get flustered. Brian was stopping everything we let fly. I traded off and jumped up to Left Wing. I was going to the net and I was going strong. I let loose a little wrist shot and it went through the ole 5 hole. I pumped my fist and was ready now. We all played the game hard as we could, and you could really feel the intensity building on the court. When all was said and done, we lost. We just couldn't put anything together. And I must admit Brian played one hell of a game. As we sat around drinking and cooling down I worked up the courage to talk to him.

" Hey Brian, you played one hell of a game today." He looked up at me, and for a second I looked deep into those chocolate brown eyes of his and froze. "Thanks, you had some real killer shots today yourself. Several I really had a tough time seeing till the last minute. To be really truthful with you," he leaned in close to me. And then started to almost whisper in my ear. "I was really lucky to just deflect them." While he leaned in, I really got a close look at him. His face and skin looked so soft and smooth, and he even smelled good sweaty. As he backed away I couldn't resist it any more. I just had to feel that skin. I made a fist and playfully swung at his chin. "Ah stop it, your just trying to suck up cause you need a ride home." I smiled hoping I didn't look stupid, or my comment didn't seem out of place. He smiled at me and said. "Damn was it that obvious?" "Asshole" and I playfully pushed him backwards. We both busted out laughing and at that moment I knew that I had to be his friend. We all started carrying our things back to our cars, when I asked Brian if he needed a ride home. He looked at Chuck and asked if he was going to be able to drop him off, or should he ride with me. "I don't care" Chuck said, "just tell your brother that he's a bum. I am going to personally make him my Bitch tomorrow at work for standing me up again." We all busted out laughing. I guess it was just the thought of him being his personal bitch that was funny.

We Jumping in my truck, I asked which way? Brian gave me directions and off we drove. I asked if he was hungry, just hoping to be able to spend as much time with him as possible. "Nah, I have to get home. I'm sure by now my Mom has a list of shit a mile long for me to do." I smiled and agreed that moms can be that way. We talked as I drove and found out more about him. He was 15, loved hockey, golf, camping, and swimming. We pulled into his driveway and he thanked me for the ride. We just kind of sat there for a second. He almost looked like he didn't want to get out of the truck. I asked if he ever went to see the local hockey team play. They were IHL and for the most part O.K. He looked at me and said he loves to go, but never really gets a chance that much. He is the only one in the family that really likes hockey. Well I gave him my number and told him to call sometime. I mentioned that I had season tickets, and get kind of bored going by myself all the time. He thanked me again and got out of the truck. I watched as he walked towards the house. Letting my truck slowly back out of the driveway.

I made my way home with thoughts of Brian running through my mind. His smile, his laugh, he was really fun to be around. I walked into the house about 15 minutes after dropping him off. Making my way back up to my room to shower and clean up, my mom yelled at me. "What mom", I yelled as I was peeling my shoes and socks off. "You better get those things off now mister and start a load of laundry before your brother gets home or your not going to get to use it." True I thought. My Brother had moved out of the house several years ago, but still to this day did not own a washer and dryer. I ran down stairs with a basket full of darks and was loading the washer when mom walked in and pinched my butt. I jumped and she laughed. "Oh by the way she said, still laughing. Who is Brian?" Huh I thought, how did she know Brian? "I just met him a couple of hours ago. A guy I played hockey with today. Why?" Mom grabbed a handful of hangers and said. "He called a few minutes before you got home; his number is next to the phone." I felt that tightness again in my chest and didn't want to seem overly anxious in front of my mom. "O.K. mom thanks." I walked past the phone, grabbing his number and walked upstairs to use the phone in my room.

I sat on the bed and just shook with nervousness. I was so excited, and yet nervous at the same time. I picked up the phone and dialed the number. A voice answered the phone that sounded like it might be Brian but I wasn't sure. "Yeah may I speak to Brian please?" "This is Brian" said the voice. "Hey Buddy" I said trying to cover my nervousness. "This is Scott, my mom said you called." "Well um yeah I did. Are you still looking for someone to go to a hockey game with? Cause if you are I see that there is a home game tonight and well. I um." He paused for a second and said. "Well I am not doing anything and I thought that well." He paused and the phone went silent. "Is there a home game tonight?" He shot back. "Yeah and were playing The Lumberjacks tonight." "Hang on" I ran over to my desk and open the drawer and pulled out my stack of tickets. Sure enough, there was a home game tonight. "Tell you what, are you going to be home for the next hour?" "Yeah, why?" "Well I have to jump in the shower and clean up, then see if I can score you a ticket for tonight's game. Is that O.K?" "Sure" he said. "Great as soon as I find anything out I will call you back."

I called the box office to see if the seat next to me was open. It was, so I reserved it and jumped in the shower. I can't believe this is happening to me. I let the hot water run over my head trying to clear my thoughts and make sense of everything. I jumped out with the towel wrapped around me and called Brian back immediately. I think he was as excited as I was. We made plans, and I told him that I would be over to pick him up around 5:00. Was that going to be O.K. with him and his Family? "Sure, I already asked and they don't care. I just need to be home before 11:00." "That can be arranged, unless we go into O.T." Laughing we said our goodbyes and I hung up the phone. At that very moment I can truthfully say I never felt better in my whole life. The Adrenaline Rush that went through my body was like nothing I had ever felt before. One moment I was shaking from nervousness, now I'm.. I'm SCARED....

The sound of laughter brought me back. I jumped and looked around, there were some kids running by. I reached for my pop and took a big swig, then lit a smoke... I let my hands rub my face; I was trying to rub the numbness from my mind. As I pulled my hands back they were shaking. My minds eye caught the breaking water off shore and I felt dizzy again. I looked at my watch and realized that I had only been here 15 minutes. I closed the book and thought about that Raven. Would he stay atop my door forever?

I hope you like this 1st installment.
