Chapter Two
Garza's authority was incontrovertible rivalling the Spanish crown at its peak, orders that were spurred from his lips were absolute. Assurance of harsh punishment towards dissent would come, and Garza was a man of his word. Rafael sat on his bed exposed, his body curled into a ball to hide his genitals. He wiped his face and leaned his head back against the wall, he let his eyelids close to escape. He heard foot steps and fear ran down his spine as the door shut, a gentle hand rested on his knee and he opened his eyes. Luis' handsome face came into view and Rafael felt a sense of relief. Luis gave a sad smile and gently covered Rafael's naked body with the sheet.
"I'm sorry." Luis' voice held regret
"For what sir?" Rafael tucked the sheet closer.
"You shouldn't be going through that." Luis replied.
"It's fine sir, I will get used to it."
"Have you ever thought about running?" the question came with curiosity.
"No... not really."
"Why not?"
"Where could I run Mr. Navarro? I have no family and I do not want the father to be hurt." Rafael said sadly.
"I see..." Luis' bit on his bottom lip. "You can put your clothes back on, Garza went to bed with a friend."
"Thank you sir." Rafael replied.
Luis stood and left, and Rafael donned his clothing. Shutting his door completely, he walked to his closet and opened the door. The metal box where he kept his photos became visible and he pushed it aside, he lifted a wooden frame and pressed it lovingly against his chest. The father and him stood in front of the plaza fountain, the water frozen by the camera. His body was wrapped in the father's warm embrace and his smile bright, he placed the frame on the pillow and rolled into bed. With a yawn he flipped the lights off and snuggled the frame to his cheek.
__
The next morning was quiet, and Rafael showered and brushed his teeth. Garza sat on his recliner having a cup of coffee and a companion from last night was heading out the door. Garza cleared his throat and waved Rafael over, without delay Rafael sat and Garza held his face.
"I'm going on business. Luis will be here in a few hours, better behave yourself." Garza's breath smelled of hazelnut.
"Yes sir."
"Good, go and get my bags ready for me." Garza lightly slapped Rafael's cheek.
Rafael entered Garza's room and began packing various shirts, ties and other items neatly into the black suitcase. Each month there were days set aside for Garza to visit Bogota. There he would check his operations and shipments to make sure they were in check. Garza would be gone for days and a fortnight at the most. With relief Rafael packed the last bag and rolled them out into the living room. Garza stood and went to his room, Rafael heard the door shut and the turn of a key. Garza came out and grabbed his bags, he kissed Rafael's neck and bit it softly. The sound of a car horn blared through the silence and Garza departed without another word.
Luis arrived an hour later with a suitcase in tow, his bright white smile on his face. What accompanied him was a rather curious sight, a small cake was in Luis' free arm and a yellow box made his pocket bulge. Rafael went and grabbed the bag and placed near the couch.
"Happy Birthday." Luis smiled and placed the cake on the table.
"Thank you sir." Rafael blushed
"I bought you a gift." Luis took the yellow box from his pocket and held it out.
Rafael took it and held it to his chest "Thank you very much."
"Are you not going to open it?" Luis asked with a frown.
"Oh yes. I will open it."
Rafael sat on a chair and carefully untied the ribbon , he opened the box and it revealed an elegant watch. It was white ceramic and cast off a natural sheen, the white face held black roman numerals and silver hands. The dial was surrounded by a light blue ring and the date was displayed on the bottom right. Rafael looked at the watch with shocked eyes and Luis took the oppurtunity to take Rafael's wrist and fasten the band with a click.
"Do you like it?" Luis smiled
"It looks expensive... but thank you sir." Rafael embraced Luis who was taken aback.
"You're welcome." Luis stroked the soft hair. "You can go to the cathedral."
"Thank you again sir." Rafael quickly put on his flip flops.
As he walked out the door he heard Luis call out "Be back by 9pm."
Rafael looked at the watch adoringly as he walked across the bridge, his usual route was blocked by a truck and he rounded a corner to find an alternative. The road became narrow and Rafael felt the buildings become unfamiliar as he walked further. Faint aromas of streetfood from the plaza nudged at his nose and he followed it. As he rounded another corner a strange odor hit his nostrils, it smelled of ash and flowers. He found himself in a neighborhood and it had a sense of familiarity. The houses were built in a colonial style and there were scant spaces between them, laundry hung from the lines above and elegant archways came every five houses. Rafael walked towards the scent and the source was shocking. Charred remains of a house looked like a post apocalyptic movie as it stood next to unscathed homes. The roof had caved in and what remained of the windows were shattered, the front door was a gaping hole. Stone steps leading to the home were covered in dead or dying flowers and a memorial like structure stood on the top step, it was completely covered with hanging rosaries and an angel stood behind it like a holy protector. The scent of flowers wafted out from the hole in the door and Rafael saw that the seeds from the flowers grew like a meadown inside, no surface was left uncovered.
"Hello are you here to visit?" a voice asked and Rafael jumped.
He turned and saw a woman in mourning attire, a black veil obscured her face and she lifted it. She had a heart shaped face with smile lines and her black hair was streaked with gray. Her hands clutched a bouquet of white lilies. She saw Rafael's expression and gave a sad smile.
"I'm sorry if I scared you."
"It's fine."
"It is beautiful isn't it?" The woman said laying down the flowers.
"What happened here?" Rafael was curious.
"You don't know?" The woman gasped "Perhaps you were too young then.... It's a sad story."
"I do not mind ma'am." Rafael smiled in assurance
"A mother and her son used to live in that house.... they were murdered and the house was set on fire. They used kerosene to keep the flame going. We did everything we could but it was too late.... everything was lost.... Many people attended the funeral and they built the memorial and someone carved that angel... Many people felt the pain and couldn't bear to return so they left their rosaries here... so that they can leave a piece of themselves for the souls to have company.... I am the only one who comes now to take care of it..." The woman wiped her tears.
"I'm sorry for your loss ma'am..." Rafael felt sympathy for the woman.
"It was painful for many people.... but Mrs. Duarte especially.... She was really close with the boy.... he called her abuelita. She used to wait here everyday hoping he would come back... She's old now and she can only make a trip every once in awhile.. but most days she sits in her home. "
Rafael felt his head have a short burst of searing pain and he quickly recovered "I am sure they'r ehappy you come to visit so often."
"Thank you. What is your name by the way?" The woman smiled through streaked make-up.
"My name is Rafael."
"Rafael? I will be sure to tell Mrs. Duarte about you." The woman smiled " A polite young man like you visiting a grave of a stranger in respects. Would you like to pray with me?"
Rafael nodded and they both knelt with rosaries in hand. The woman attempted a prayer but stopped "I cannot seem to get one in my mind. Would you mind?"
"No ma'am, I would be glad to." Rafael racked his brain and began " Oh Father, full of benevolence. I ask of you to care for the souls who have departed here. Bask then in your light and for those who mourn grant them closure and instill hope and happiness to heal broken hearts. Amen."
"Amen." The woman repeated.
The woman stared at Rafael's face and gave a bemused smile "I did not get a good look until now. I must say you're very handsome. Are your eyes truly that color?"
"Thank you ma'am, and it's a yes to your question."
The woman bid farewell and Rafael went on his way to the cathedral, as he looked back he saw the woman looking at him curiously. The cathedral gates were shut and Rafael attempted to open them, the father looked out his window at the sound of the chained lock being shaken and quickly ran out to meet him. The father looked almost alien in his formal shirt and slacks, his rosary bouncing as he sprinted to the gate. The father gave him a smile of relief as his hands fumbled with the lock. The gates swung back and the father quickly embraced him, the strong arms lifting him off his feet.
"Thank goodness you're alright." Heliodoro placed his arm around Rafael's shoulder.
"Garza left for business." Rafael said happily.
"I have food upstairs, how about we go and celebrate your birthday?"
Upon entering the father's room a nostalgic aroma filled Rafael's nostrils, various herbs and spices with a hint of tomato made his mouth drool. The father took two bowls from the cabinet and scooped a reddish stew into them, he placed the bowls on the table and poured glasses of water. Taking Rafael's hand he pulled out a chair and Rafael sat, the father sat on the other side.
"I'm sorry about this, I did not know you were coming today." Heliodoro gave an apologetic look.
"It's fine father."
"You still cannot stop calling me father?" Heliodoro gave a slight grin.
"I-Im sorry.. I am used to it is all."
"I am only teasing."
Rafael wanted to change the subject "What is this father??"
"The Spanish call it Gazpacho and the Portuguese call it Gaspacho, personally I enjoy the Spanish variety more."
"It tastes good."
"Thank you."
Rafael took another bite of the soup "Father?"
"Yes?"
"What is it like over there?"
"Portugal you mean?"
"Yes father."
"There is too much to say." Heliodoro let out a laugh.
Rafael finished the last drop of Gaspacho and wiped his mouth "Thank you for the meal father."
"It was my pleasure, I have to step out for a minute but please have some dessert."
"Desert?" Rafael heard the excitement in his voice.
"Yes, Arroz Doce (rice pudding). I will be in soon, I have to place books back on the shelves."
Rafael took a bowl from the cabinet and gently scooped the pudding into the bowl, as he tasted his first bite the flavors of cinnamon and lemon flirted with his taste buds. He wolfed down a bowl and with guilt took a second as the father entered the room.
"I see you like the arroz doce." Heliodoro walked over to Rafael and patted his head.
"It is very sweet."
Heliodoro looked at the clock "What time did he tell you to be home?"
"9, father."
"You should head back, before you go I do have another gift for you."
The father walked to his cabinet and withdrew an envelope, he passed the envelope to Rafael who opened it. Rafael looked at the 80,000 pesos inside and looked at the father with gratitude.
"I know that Garza does not give you money, so I felt you needed it."
"Thank you so much, Heliodoro." Rafael hugged him.
"Now hurry back, I do not want you to be hurt."
"I will see you tomorrow." Rafael's smile was bright and Heliodoro watched him go.
Rafael returned to an empty apartment and found Luis' things still against the couch. He called out and heard no response, as he walked into his room he heard the front door open and shut. He peeked around the corner and Luis sat at on a recliner, there was a tired expression on the handsome face and his eyes were full of anxiety. Rafael walked out into the living room and Luis gave a strained smile.
"Are you alright sir?"
"I'm fine , I had a long day."
"Where did you go sir?"
Luis gave a reluctant sigh "Places.. do not worry about it."
"Yes sir." Rafael began walking to his room.
"Rafael?" Luis called out suddenly.
"Yes sir?"
"Would you mind helping me get to your room?"
Rafael walked over and let one of Luis' arms hug around his shoulders, he then guided him down the hallway and into the room. Luis with satisfaction collapsed on the bed with his arms spread, Rafael grabbed a pillow and blanket and spread it on the floor.
"What are you doing?"
"I have to sleep on the floor sir."
"No, come and lay on the bed with me."
Rafael blushed harshly "Y-es sir."
He laid on the bed next to Luis and felt strong arms wrap around him and the sheet was pulled over them. Luis was warm and Rafael felt his heart beat, a slow steady beat. He felt Luis' hot breath on his neck and felt his heart beat quicker, a hand placed itself over his heart.
"Your heart is beating so fast." Luis laughed.
"I am nervous sir."
"Don't be, I am here to protect you." Luis said cryptically.
"What do you mean sir?"
"Good night." Luis said quickly and they both drifted.
