Chapter Eleven
Up early as usual, I made my Twinings, then searched the video archives for old episodes of `The Amazing Thomas'. Thomas Willis, or Tarka, as we now knew him, was quite the heavy man in his 20s, when the television show was made. From looking at the old videos, I'd wager him to every bit of 21-22 stone. What a contrast it must have been for him, to be taken from his lipid cocoon and transformed into the lithe, athletic body he now sported. I wondered if he didn't feel his current body to be a vast improvement. My own transformation, though horrifying at first, is in many ways an improvement. My chimera musculature is far more efficient than was that of my human body. I have better stamina; some parts are larger...wink, wink. Anyway, I was starting the second half-hour video when a yawning, stretching Michael walked up behind me.
"Oh my God! That's `pre-Tarka'?" he asked in amazement.
"Yes, indeed it is" I replied. I could tell he was thinking much along the same lines as I.
`The Amazing Thomas', throughout its entire run, had a disclaimer stating that if anyone could ever prove that the host used some trick such as cold reading or information gathering by crew members, the BBC would pay that person £1,000,000. During the seven-year run of the programme, the prize was never collected. Thomas made it a rule that all audience members were first come, first served, and to compound the challenge, he only used random employees of the studio as ushers; none of whom were allowed to ask anything of the audience members. Sealing the deal, so to speak, he only ever arrived after everyone was seated and didn't speak to any of his crew until after taping was complete. "What is his trick?" many asked. The trick was, that Thomas Willis had no trick; he was genuinely psychically gifted. At five years old he told his mother, who was pregnant, that his brother would not be born alive. Two weeks later, the baby came early with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck; stillborn. At least that's the story from the documentary.
"I wonder if he already knows how all this is going to turn out?" Michael thought.
"Let's go check out our new work space" I said, standing up to get dressed for work.
"Let me show you something really quick" Michael said, "if you haven't already researched me." He put in a link for MIT alumni and brought up one of his published articles; but the aside is what he clicked on. `A Story of Courage and Determination' the title exclaimed. The photo was of an emaciated man in a wheelchair; very Hawking-esque, only younger. The caption read '18-year-old genius, Michael Davis, soldiers on despite his battle with Multiple Sclerosis since early childhood.' I looked up at him, and he at me for a long moment.
"My transformation wasn't voluntary either, but it probably would have been had I been asked, I damn sure wouldn't go back to that" he said. "I've researched the backgrounds of most of the people we've met. Be sure to ask Kaz about his history; he is the only voluntary transformation I've found. Not all are from situations like ours, I know you and Lukas were different altogether, but I'm kind of happy in this state at least, if not in this place."
"So, now you're trying to convince me that the Chelminsk Cabal is a good thing?" I flicked to him sharply.
"No love. Just saying that if this had never happened to us, we would have never met" he sent back with a soothing vibe, "they just inadvertently did good along the way to fulfilling their not-good plan."
I sat down at my work station and opened the file of genetic code I was to be working on this week. I stopped in my tracks. The assignment I was given was to try to isolate the source of psychic abilities. The pages of code were titled `TW92939873620'. TW as in Thomas Willis. There was no way in Hell I was going to pinpoint that DNA for them to laser out of existence. I settled in, knowing my whole week's work was going to be to not be able to find anything. I also knew I had to get the information to Tarka as soon as possible; Michael and I would be going for a "swim" later on. An hour or so into the code examination, I felt less apprehensive as I could honestly not find a physical source that could be associated with such abilities. How would one test whether a hypothesis was true or false without destroying the subject anyway? Several hours later, I stretched and bumped into Michael who was seated next to me.
"Are you about ready for lunch?" I asked.
"Sure."
In our new quarters, we didn't have a cook so we went to the kitchen to prepare our food. Diego had beat us to the punch; the room smelled wonderful. On the cooktop was a huge pan of paella; the smell of saffron, bay leaves, shrimp and chicken filled the air. It looked like he made enough for an army. After a heaping plate of this wonderful concoction and a glass of chardonnay, we decided on a quick siesta before our swim.
Back in our room, Michael decided he wanted dessert. He pulled my shorts off and crawled between my legs; licking his way from my knee to my crotch before nuzzling into the space between my thigh and my balls. I tried to turn it into a sixty-nine, but he was having none of it today. He was only out for my pleasure. He popped a finger into his mouth to wet it well, then eased it into my ass as he gently sucked both my balls into his mouth. His right hand was squeezing my cock like a lemon. He replaced the finger in my backside with his tongue as his left hand went to his own dick. Finally, he moved up and took just the end of my foreskin into his mouth; sucking it and play-chewing it, then sticking the tip of his tongue into the nozzle of bunched up skin on the end. His reward was a small dollop of precum; that only made him work harder. He jerked my skin back until it was tight then dove onto it all the way to the pubes. His finger went back inside me along with an additional one; both circling my prostate. I was leaking like crazy as his head rapidly cycled up and down my length. I put my hand on his head and opened up my feelings to him so he could feel how close I was. That made him crazed. The hand on his cock was a blur; his head almost that fast. He sent me the feelings he was experiencing and I couldn't hold back. I exploded into his throat. He pulled off enough he could catch the last shots in his mouth as he covered a small hand towel with multiple strings of cum from his own orgasm. He came up beside me and, after savoring the flavor of the semen in his mouth for a few seconds, swallowed and kissed me. We dozed off.
About thirty minutes later I woke up and dialed up Tarka on the com.
"What is the dress code for swimming with you guys?" I asked.
"Whatever you want" he said, "we usually go in the way GREG made us."
"Fantastic. If you don't mind, we'd like to come down for a swim" I said.
"Any time, my friend, come on" he replied.
"See you in a few then" I tapped the com off.
A different otter met us at the hub today. He introduced himself as Noah Dijkstra. I explained to Noah that Tarka was expecting us for a swim. He nodded and pointed the way. Tarka and Otto were busy doing underwater acrobatics. What I didn't expect to find here was the trio situated at the picnic table by the water; Kaz, Vadym and, of all people, Travis. Looking at it from the physical side it made sense. Travis' body was part Labrador retriever and they loved the water. On the mental side, it didn't make sense to me for the otters to be hosting probably enemies. We walked up and said our hellos.
"Why on earth do you have a dog here" I thought specifically to Kaz.
"Do not fret, will explain later" he replied.
"What brings you fellows up a level?" Kaz asked aloud.
"An invitation to swim" I said jovially.
"Henry, Michael, come on in, the water's fine!" Tarka yelled from the edge of the water.
"I'll join you" Travis said. We all dropped our clothes on the table and walked toward the artificial river. Michael stopped me and started rubbing my left calf. "You had a little dried cum there" he whispered, smiling.
Travis was quite an accomplished swimmer for a dog, then I noticed the webbing between his toes. We swam across to an island in the middle of the `river'.
"Have you thought about what we discussed?" Tarka asked Travis.
"I'm still not sure" he answered.
"You know what we've told you is true, your ability to sense truth and lies is unparalleled" Tarka said.
"I know. I just can't believe they're as evil as you say" Travis said "they've always treated us very well."
"Yes. You guys got the carrot, some of us, however, got the stick" Tarka said, emitting a wave of despair.
"Wait, I thought you said you were happy with your new body?" Travis said.
"And I am, but that doesn't cancel out the fact that I was basically poisoned by a cabal doctor and given medication that made me gain weight until my heart stopped working. Nor does it cancel out the fact that I had a very lucrative life, when I `died' I had well in excess of £5,000,000 in my accounts that my barrister managed to make disappear into an account tied to Ilya Rostovich. The Times wrote, "the Amazing Thomas dies destitute at his estate in Knightsbridge".
Travis flinched, as I'm sure did I. There was no staged emotion in those statements; they were directly from the heart. Travis stared into space reflecting on it for a few minutes.
"What about Kazymyr?" he said nodding his head toward the shore, "he volunteered for a new body."
"Begged, actually" Tarka said, "did he tell you the entire story?"
"He said becoming a chimera was his choice. He didn't really elaborate" Travis replied.
Michael spoke up then, "If you had the lower half of your body slowly being submerged into a vat of acid, screaming until your vocal cords could hardly make a noise, and one person offered you a choice that would stop the pain, would you ask for it? They made him beg to be transferred. He chose the vessel, that's true. He believed with the strength of a bear; he would have a better chance against the bastards. The Cabal is not to be trifled with; they are pure evil."
Travis opened his mouth to answer but nothing came out. Again, he stared into the distance; clearly affected by the scene Michael created in his mind.
"I've got to go before Simon gets suspicious" Travis said, swimming back toward the main shore.
"How can you be so sure he won't betray us?" I asked Tarka.
"I can't be. I choose to believe there is good in every person" he replied.
I swam back across shortly after Travis and went to sit with Kaz and Vad.
"Kaz, is it true what I've heard about you being tortured by the Cabal?" I asked tentatively. He looked down at the table and began flicking at specs of dirt.
"I don't really like to talk about those times" he said.
"I'm sorry. Never mind. I didn't mean to bring up bad memories" I quickly said.
"No, my friend, I'll tell you. It's how I learned to never be beholden to anyone" he said. "I was a young post graduate biology student in Ukraine, when I was approached by some men who offered me a great sum of money to come work for them. They didn't tell me what the goal of this work would be. I was happy. I bought a nice apartment, a new car; my family was so proud of how well I was doing. Then I found some files regarding some of you guys, and the plans they had to transform you into half human monsters. I was shaken. I packed my clothes into the car and fled Kiev as quickly as possible. How naïve of me. Of course, the car had been equipped with GPS tracking. They located me and took me back to the lab. When I refused to do what they asked, I was placed into a harness and hung over a vat of sulphuric acid. Slowly, they lowered me, I watched as my shoes dissolved; the screaming began when the liquid was eating through my feet. I was given choices; I could go on as I was, just missing feet. Later as the liquid stripped the flesh from my calves, they offered the choice of having my consciousness transferred into another body. To me that meant some other human would have their life stripped from them so I could use their shell; it was not really a choice. Finally, a man in the shadows said that I could be placed into an experimental body, half man, half bear. It would solve their problem of me escaping again. This body had been created from DNA stolen from me spliced with DNA of a Russian bear. The man teased me, knowing the bear was his plan from the start. `No' he said. `On second thought, I don't think I want to waste one of my bodies on you.' As he started to walk away, with what were probably my dying breaths, I begged of him, `Please, please make me a bear'. My tears sizzled as they fell into the vat. The next thing I know, I wake up in this body."
"Jesus Christ, Kaz..." I was at a loss for words, "when Michael said you did it voluntarily..."
"Yes, I guess it's debatable" he said, "Later, I found out they had transformed my boyfriend, Vadym. Their thinking was if they kept us together, we'd be happy and obey. A day of reckoning is coming."
