Chapter 6

I think both my mother and sister were surprised to see me downstairs so early, completely ready and eating my breakfast.

"Are you sure you're feeling alright, honey?" my mother asked jokingly.

My sister just gave me an incredulous look, grabbed her usual bagel with cream cheese and headed out to my car. I knew from the look that she was really curious to know why I was up so unusually early but wouldn't say anything.

I drove to school and the whole car ride over my sister just quietly munched on her bagel and looked over at me occasionally trying to figure me out. When we reached the school, I dropped off my sister at the front. She looked at me as if expecting me to tell her but I just gave her a big grin and she left frustrated. My sister was quite odd at times. I then went to park my car in the student parking lot. I was really early so I just sat in my car. I scanned the lot looking for any signs of Colin but I couldn't see a black BMW anywhere. So I turned on the radio and started listening to music, trying to relax and think about other things.

When I saw Jake pull into the parking lot, I got out of my car. I first went to my locker to get my books then I headed to my English class. I saw Jake and Ashley had made it to the classroom so I went in and sat down next to them.

"So," Jake said, turning towards me smiling as I slid into the seat next to him

"What?" I asked innocently but well aware yet again, of where this was headed.

"Dude, are you going to ask him out today?" he replied.

I laughed. "Isn't that the same thing you asked me yesterday?"

"Yeah, I guess," replied Jake with a thoughtful look. "I can't help it that you move fast."

"Hey! I am also quite surprised by all of what happened yesterday. I never imagined seeing someone and falling so hard for them was possible in a 24 hour time span."

"It is crazy," said Ashley.

"Yeah, I woke up thinking about one person and went to sleep thinking about someone completely different. Anyways, I was thinking I might just ask him if he wants to join us for our movie night tonight."

"That's probably a good idea," said Ashley. "It will be low key and you can gauge his interest for you."

"Ooh, that should make our movie night very interesting," said Jake.

"You guys better not do anything!"

"I won't, I promise," said Jake grinning.

"Don't worry Kyle, I'll keep this kid under my eye," said Ashley giving Jake a stern look.

At that point, the teacher came into the classroom and class started. We spent the rest of the class time debating which movie we should see. Ashley was in the mood for some chick-flick while Jake and I were strongly opposed and wanted to watch a horror movie. At the end of class, we still hadn't reached a compromise with Jake and Ashley arguing over which was the best date movie while I kept trying to convince them that it wasn't a date.

Two more periods passed by without much incidence. I tried to look for Colin in the hallways between classes but I couldn't find him among all the students. After third period, I was still looking around for Colin when Bryan saw me.

"Looking for something or should I say someone?" he asked with a sly smile.

I looked at him confused.

"I heard about Colin," he said.

My eyes widened. "Who told you?"

"Jake. He told us during third period."

"Us?"

"Me and Zac."

"Damn, I'm going to kill him! He wasn't supposed to say anything!"

"So is it true that you're in love with a guy?"

"Not in love, but I do like him."

"Wow," he said then smiled. "I would never have thought you as the gay type."

"I'm not gay. I'm only interested in Colin."

"Whatever, man. I don't care about that shit. We're friends whether you're with a girl or guy."

I smiled. "Thanks, Bryan."

"Behind you."

"What?"

"He's behind you," said Bryan then walked away.

I turned around and bumped into Colin. Luckily, this time neither of us fell down.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey," he said nervously.

Then the bell rang. Shit! What bad timing.

"Um, my friends are going out to watch a movie tonight. Do you want to come?" I asked quickly as all the rest of the students in the hallways hurried to their classrooms.

Colin smiled and my heart seemed to skip a beat. Wow! He was quite charming with that smile.

"Sure," he said. "I have to get to class now though."

"Okay, want me to stop by your locker after school to give you directions?"

"Sure, see you then," he said before turning and walking to his class.

"Bye," I said as I watched him walk away with a stupid grin on my face. I was happier than I had ever recently been. Then I realized I was late for class and I ran to my fourth period. I rushed into the classroom but luckily, class hadn't started so I was able to make it to my seat without the teacher noticing.

After fourth period, it was finally time for lunch. I was headed to the cafeteria to join my friends when I ran into Rachel.

"Hey Kyle. How are you?" said Rachel with a flirtatious smile that made me groan inside.

"I'm good. You?" I replied with a fake smile.

"Looking forward to tomorrow night."

Damn. I had still to cancel the date I had asked her to yesterday. I looked at her smiling at me. How would she take it? I should have consulted Ashley about this matter. She always gave me all the practical advice about dealing with girls. However, it was also probably better to take care of the matter now before it became a bigger problem later.

"Yeah, Rachel, so about that date..."

Rachel's smile disappeared. "You don't have to say it," she said cutting me off. "I could read it on your face."

"Really?"

"Well, the look on your face when you saw me. I can tell that you don't really like me as much as I like you."

"Well, Rachel, you are an amazing girl..."

"It's okay Kyle. I kind of knew that you weren't really that interested in me and the truth is that I was actually over you. In fact, I had been looking at someone else when you asked me out."

I sighed in relief. At least I hadn't made such an ass of myself for asking a girl out and then dumping her the next day. Most girls wouldn't take that very well and I was glad Rachel was an exception.

"Can I just ask you one favor though?" asked Rachel.

"Sure."

"Can you at least kiss me once?"

"Here? In front of everyone?" I asked looking at around the busy hallway full of students going to lunch.

Rachel nodded. I thought about it and realized that a kiss would do no harm so I shrugged, stepped forward and kissed her lightly on the lips. I stepped back and saw a small smile spread on her face.

"Okay, that's enough. See you around Kyle!" said Rachel with a wave and then disappeared into the crowds of students.

She was an amazing girl no doubt. If I hadn't seen Colin the other day, I totally wouldn't have minded having her as my girlfriend. However, things were a bit different now. I sighed and continued to lunch. I found my friends sitting at our usual table, Jake next Ashley and Bryan next to Karen.

"I can't believe you told Bryan!" I hissed into Jake's ear when I sat down next to him.

"Sorry, dude, I didn't know it was confidential."

I just shook my head. "You are hopeless."

I looked over at Bryan who gave me a sly smile.

"Where's Zac?" I asked noticing he was gone.

"I don't know. He was with Jake and me in third period. He might have gone to the library or something."

I nodded. Zac occasionally went to the library during lunch to finish homework. I proceeded to eat my lunch and talk to my friends. Soon the bell rang and I headed to class. My last two classes passed by quickly as usual and I made my way to Colin's locker. He wasn't there when I got to his locker so I decided to just wait.

"Hey Kyle!" said Rachel who was at her locker which was next to Colin's.

"Hey Rachel," I said then looked over at the students coming and going trying to find Colin.

"Are you waiting for someone here?"

"Yeah, Colin," I said jerking my thumb towards his locker. "I had to pick up an assignment for him."

"Oh, he already left," said Rachel as she shut her locker. "See you later!"

"Bye," I said as Rachel left.

That was weird. I had told Colin that I would meet him at his locker after school but he hadn't waited for me. After waiting for a bit longer, thinking that he might return, I slowly walked to my car. I was a bit disappointed. I then remembered that I had his number. I decided to call him. I pulled out my cell phone and the number he had given me that I had put in my wallet. I dialed his number and after a few rings, he picked up.

"Hello?" said a voice that I immediately recognized as Colin.

"Hey Colin, it's Kyle. I missed you at your locker."

"Oh, hey, um, my parents had to pick me up so I was in a hurry."

"Okay, that's cool. So will I see you tonight?"

"Um, I actually have a project to work on that I forgot about so I don't think I can make it."

"That's okay. We can hang out sometime later."

"Yeah, listen, I have to go so I'll have to talk to you later."

"Okay, see you," I said and then Colin hang up.

I put my phone down and stared at it. I felt my heart sink. Colin wasn't coming to the movies. I had been really exciting about the prospect of us hanging out together but now it was gone. It also didn't seem that Colin was as interested in hanging out with me, which seemed a bit weird seeing that he had been looking for me last night. Maybe I had just gotten it all wrong. I got in my car and sullenly drove myself back home. This was not really turning out to be as great of a day as I had hoped.

To be continued...
