Jared and Jon walked out of the park holding hands and smiling widely. Everyone they passed looked at them. Some people gave them harsh scowls while others would smile at them or else ignore them completely. They didn't care. Jon was just happy to have Jared back in his life, and Jared... well Jared was just happy that his life had meaning again.

"Guess we should hail a cab," said Jon. "That way we can get back to your place faster." Jared looked at him and could see that look in his eyes that, although he had only experience a few times, meant that Jon was going to show him the time of his life (i.e., he was going to rock Jared's world!).

"You naughty little boy," giggled Jared. "Actually, I was kinda hoping we could walk home. It's a beautiful night and now that we have no reason to hide anymore, I really want to be able to just walk along the street with you. You know, enjoy the semi-fresh air, hold hands, prologue the wait so that the orgasm is that much more intense..."

Jon stopped in his tracks. He looked at Jared, up at the sky, back at Jared, and then at a passing cab. "Intensify the orgasm. Hmmm, should we cross the street here, or wait till the next intersection?"

Jared laughed and squeezed Jon's hand tighter. "God I've missed you Jon. I love you so much."

"I love you too baby."

"Let's cross here. The next intersection is a bit busier, and people around here don't like stopping for red lights that much."

"Yeah, I've noticed."

They went to the intersection and waited for the sign to change to that most universal of symbols telling them to run for it and pray. Just as the sign changed Jon looked around. Jared didn't notice and went on across. He was almost across when he realized Jon wasn't with him. Jared turned around to see Jon just starting to cross the road.

"What's taking so long? I said we would take our time, but I didn't mean to be that slow."

"I just thought I heard someone yell my name."

Jared listened. He was about to dismiss the idea as Jon's paranoia when, low and behold, he heard in the distance a sound that was not going to be good for them.

"There they are, bring the camera!"

"Great! There goes our nice little walk."

"Forget the walk Jon, let's just get out of here. Come on!"

Jon continued to cross the street. Unfortunately, the cross signal had changed, and a car was speeding down the road, oblivious to what was happening at the intersection. The driver's only concern: getting through before the damned light changed.

Jared heard the car coming before he saw it, the street lights above were masking the car's headlights. The car was going too fast to stop, and Jon was directly in its path.

"Jesus, Jon look out!"

Jon looked up to see the car coming towards him. He froze. His legs became extensions of the pavement, his eyes locked like those of a deer on the headlights. Jared ran for him. For all he was worth he ran. Somehow he found enough mental ability to curse four lane roads.

"Move damn it," he screamed as he reached Jon. Jared bent forward, putting his shoulder into Jon's side as if tackling him out of the way of his wide receiver as he headed to the endzone. Jon went flying. Instinctively he tried to grab Jared and use the momentum to pull him clear as well.

The car scored a direct hit; Jon had been too late in his efforts. Jared was tossed up into the air. Unfortunately, he didn't go high enough to clear the cab of the car. He hit the windshield with a bone chilling crack, a splash of blood coming from his mouth and splattering across the bonnet.

By now the driver had hit the brakes, and Jared just rolled back over the cab, down the trunk, and hit the road with a dull, sickening thud. The car came to a screeching halt another 40 feet down the street.

"Jared!" Jon went running to where Jared was laying motionless on the road. The driver of the car jumped out and came running up behind him.

"Oh god! Oh my god, I am so sorry. I didn't see him, you, uh, either of you. Oh god! Oh - "

"Shut the fuck up! Just go call a damned ambulance."

The driver, a young man about 25 years old, was visibly shaking. "Uh, yeah OK. I have a car in my phone, I mean a - going."

Jon looked back to Jared and reached out to touch him, but pulled back. The angle of his leg gave away his obvious injuries.

"Oh fuck, Jared? Jared, can you hear me?"

Jared moaned in response.

"An ambulance is on the way Jared. You're going to be OK, you hear me? You're going to be O - K."

"I'm OK now Jon. Just a few - " Jared tried to get up, " Owww! Busted ribs. Fuck! Help me up will ya?"

"I think you should stay there until the ambulance gets here. You need to be checked out first."

"Get the camera rolling on this. This is big stuff."

Jon looked behind him to see a reporter standing to the side of his cameraman, the red light on the camera burning bright as the sun, contrasting the black of the camera itself.

"Jon, help me up please."

Jon looked back at Jared. There was blood coming from the side of his mouth, and Jon could hear the raspy breathing.

"No, Jared you need to stay where you are until the ambulance gets here."

"Jon, help me the f-" Jared's sentenced ended in sputtered coughs. Each ejecting a small amount of blood onto the front of his shirt.

"You see that? You have more than busted ribs, you have internal bleeding. You're waiting for the ambulance. I'm not losing you again Jared. Not after working so hard to get you back. I love you Jared, and I need you in my life."

Jared looked down and saw the blood on his shirt. "Oh fuck. Jon!"

"Jared calm down, don't freak out on me."

"I'm coughing up blood Jon. That's not good. I need to stand up. If I can stand up I'll be fine. Help me up Jon. Please, you have to help me up."

"OK, OK. You sure you want to do this?"

"Yes! Now help me up, please!"

Jon reached down and took Jared's right hand in his own and slowly began to pull him up. Jared immediately cringed and let out a blood curdling scream.

"Christ! Ooh, better try the other arm, that one's broken."

"Jared, I don't think we should try this." When Jared screamed Jon began to cry. He hated seeing Jared in pain, and this was almost too much for him to bear.

"Jon, I need to get up. I - " The sentence was cut short by a spurt of heavy coughing, producing more blood. This time though, Jared was not so quick to speak again. It was obvious to Jon that he was having trouble getting his breath back. And it was obvious to the reporter as well.

"As you can see, Jared Baines is having trouble getting his breath. He's coughing up blood and his right arm is broken. The driver of the car has gone to call an ambulance and is now returning from his car. People this has been a most horrendous event. We'll stay here live keeping you up to date on the situation.

Jon heard every word. He didn't know if he was more angry or sick; whether he wanted to tear the guy a second asshole, or vomit. He didn't take long to decide.

"What the fuck are you doing," he yelled as he turned around. "Do you have any fucking compassion in you at all? He's hurt and all you can think of is your fucking ratings! You slimy bastard!" Jon reached for the camera and snatched it away from the cameraman. He pointed it at his own face and walked away from Jared.

"Hey, get back here with that." The reporter followed, while the cameraman stayed with Jared.

"You people want a news story? I've got a story for you. Reporter beaten with his own fucking camera." Jon turned around and nailed the reporter square in the face with the camera, lens first. Blood started dripping from his nose almost immediately. When the reporter bent over Jon hit him across the back, sending him to his knees. He was about to hit the guy once more when he heard Jared's weak call for him. Jon smashed the camera on the sidewalk and went running the few feet back to his beloved.

Jon bent down and put his hand on Jared's face, trying to wipe away some of the blood that was on his cheek. "What's wrong baby?"

Jared started to cry. Jon looked at the driver of the car, then the reporter. Both of them had very somber looks on their faces. Jon's anger was replaced by fear and he too started to cry.

"Come on, Jared. Tell me what it is. Please?"

Jared tried to take a deep breath but just ended up coughing again. The force of the cough turned him onto his left side and a large puddle of blood started to leak across the pavement.

"Somebody tell me what's wrong!"

The driver and cameraman looked at each other, trying to silently decide who should give the bad news. The cameraman finally nodded, indicating he would be the messenger.

"He's... paralyzed. He can't feel his legs."

Jon looked at him, but the cameraman couldn't meet his gaze. "How? What did he?"

"When you turned to take the camera from me you hit him pretty hard in the foot. He didn't feel it. He wanted someone to squeeze his leg so I did, and... he didn't feel it."

Jon looked up at Jared's face only to see that he was out cold. He could still hear his raspy breathing, indicating he was still alive. Just thinking about Jared dying sent chills through his body.

The screech of the ambulance siren was now audible. Jon let out his breath, not realizing that he had been holding it. His two companions did the same.

"Hang on Jared, the ambulance is almost here. You're going to be fine. Trust me."

The ambulance ride to the hospital helped calm Jon's nerves somewhat. The E.M.T.s were calm. They put Jared on oxygen and checked his pulse. There wasn't much else they could do until they ran some tests.

The coffee was getting cold. How long had he been holding it again? The clock on the wall showed 11:30. It had been about 2 hours now. Jon looked over to the corner of the waiting room where the camera man was sitting. He had accompanied the reporter than Jon had savaged, although he did come over every now and then to see if Jon had heard anything.

Problem was, Jon hadn't heard anything. At least not since about 10 minutes after they went into the ER. He was worried beyond belief. He kept trying to tell himself that no news was good news, but just like you and I know, he knew that was bullshit. He wanted to know what was going on, and he wanted to know now.

"Excuse me, Mr. Brandis?"

"Huh?" Jon looked up to see a police officer standing over him. She was blonde with beautiful green eyes.

"I was just wondering if yourself or Mr. Baines are planning on pressing charges on Mr. Simms. If you don't, the state will take over anyway."

Jon thought it over. He wanted that bastard to pay for what he had done to Jared. But then his logical side kicked in. It was just an accident, and he didn't run away. Hell he even helped! If the state is going to do it anyway, why should he bother."

"I don't think we'll be press - "

"Excuse me, Mr. Brandis."

Jon spun around in mid sentence to see the doctor coming down the corridor towards him. "Hold that thought," he told the officer.

"Doctor? How's Jared? Is he OK?" Jon stopped with his wild questioning as the doctor held out his hand, indicating a time to listen.

"We've done all we can. Right now he is in no pain." The doctor seemed to stop prematurely, making Jon's stomach knot.

"I don't like the way you stopped like that. What else have you got to tell me?"

"I... think you'd better sit down first."

"I don't want to sit down, not now, not until I get some god damned answers! So spill it doc!"

The doctor looked at the officer standing behind Jon, asking her to stay around with only a look. When she nodded agreement, he took a deep breath, and began.

"Jared suffered some very serious injuries. His right arm was broken, as was his left leg. He has 6 broken ribs, 2 on the right, 4 on the left, and... he's paralyzed from the waist down. He's also partially paralyzed from his neck to his waist which would explain why he wasn't experiencing any major pain from his injuries. It's the damnedest thing I ever saw."

"I don't care about what you have and haven't seen. I want some definites here!"

"OK. He also has extreme internal injuries. Bone fragments from his ribs have ruptured his spleen, a kidney and torn his large intestine, as well as punctured his left lung to the point where we can't fix it. The end result is... we can't do anything more than make him comfortable until he passes away."

He couldn't breath. The doctor's words had knocked the wind out of him. He reached for the back of the chair he had just been sitting on but missed. He went crashing backwards into the officer who luckily was ready to catch him. She held him up until he could stand on his own two legs, albeit shakily. When the officer released Jon's arms he turned around and looked at her. His face was wet. The tears were flowing as if someone had opened up a damn, or channeled all the liquid in his body to his eyes. He was shaking badly, his once warm, loving eyes now cold, dark, and empty. Jon looked down slightly to meet the officer's compassionate gaze.

"I'm going to sue that bastard for all he's worth!"

"Um, Jonathan... Mr. Brandis. Maybe you should talk that over with Jared first. He's asked to see you."

Jon spun around, losing his balance and nearly crashing to the floor. "Where... what room?"

"215, just down that hallway."

Jon didn't even thank the doctor or the police officer. He went as fast as his shaky legs would carry him down the hallway and around the corner.

"Poor guy. After going through so much just to get him back, he's going to lose him like this."

The doctor nodded his head. "I see this too much he said. Loved ones should never have to be forced to go through this."

"Jared," whispered Jon. He don't know why he whispered, it just seemed appropriate.

"Hey babe," came the low reply, "I'm glad you could... make it."

Jon walked up to the bed. He was surprised to see that there were no plugs, needles or chords hanging from his beloved. The only thing that was there was a breathing mask Jared had his left hand extended and Jon gladly took it and squeezed gently.

"I guess... the doctor told you... huh?"

"Yeah." Jon sniffed, trying not to cry in front of Jared.

"Ain't... life a ... bitch." Jared tried to laugh, but only ended up coughing and gasping for air.

"Shhh, don't try to laugh, save your strength."

"I need - "

"Shhh, no, no. Save your strength. You need to save your strength baby."

"Jon... there's nothing that can be done. I just need to tell you some thi - no, please... please baby, don't cry."

Jon wiped his eyes and tried to compose himself. "I'm sorry Jared but, I just don't want to lose you."

"You're not going... to lose me Jon. I'll... always be with you... in your heart."

"Heh, yeah."

"Now, I need... to tell you that I don't... want to press char... ges on Mr. Simms."

"What? Jared, after what he did. Jared, he took you from me, I can't let him get away with that!"

"Please Jon. It was an ... accident. The state will deal with... him. Leave it at that."

"Jared I can't! You're going to die, I can't let him go free for that!" Jon was crying heavily, and Jared had a few tears streaming down his face.

"Jon... please. Look. I'm... ... scared. I've never had any religious... beliefs, and now... I'm scared to die. What's... going... to happen? I'm so scared." Jared could barely speak between his poor breathing and the tears that were choking him.

"You're going to go to Heaven baby."

"How do you... know?"

:"I know. I've known it all along. You are an angel Jared. You're my angel and God knows that. You're going to go to heaven and be fixing the main server for the entire kingdom." Jared smiled, eliciting a smile from Jon.

"You... think?"

"Oh yeah! I know you will. Trust me. You do trust me, right?"

Jared looked deep into Jon's once again loving eyes and smiled. "Of course I... do baby."

"Good."

"Just promise me... you won't... sue."

Jon sighed and looked into Jared's eyes.

"You can... make it my last... request."

"I promise. I won't sue."

"Thank you."

Jared and Jon sat in silence for the next few minutes holding hands. Jon would occasionally bend forward to kiss Jared's forehead, or wipe away a tear. Suddenly Jared's breath became louder and more shallow.

"Jon?"

"Yeah baby?"

"I love... you..."

"I love you too Jared. Jared?" Jon noticed that Jared wasn't breathing. "No.... Jared?" He checked for a pulse, but there was none to be found.

"Jared! NO! Jared?" Jon's face was streaked once again with tears, as his soulmate slipped away.

"No... no, no, no, no..."

"Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!" Jon bolted upright in bed. He was shaking and covered in a cold sweat all over his body. He looked around seeing that he wasn't in the hospital room anymore. He wasn't in his bed either. He was disoriented and scared, and desperately in need of Jared.

"Jon? What's wrong?"

Jon turned quickly towards the voice, and broke out into an immediate smile. Jared was coming in through the bedroom door wearing only a pair of baby blue boxers.

"Jared?!"

"Yeah," giggled Jared, "who else would it be? This is my apartment." Jared's smile seemed to light up the entire room.

"It was a dream," Jon said to himself. "It was all a very bad dream!"

"What was?"

"It was a dream! A-HAAAAA! IT WAS ONLY A DREAM!" Jon leapt out of bed and ran after Jared. He jumped into Jared's arms, nearly knocking the two of them to the floor.

"Whoa, what's this all about? And what's this about a dream?"

Jon had his face buried against Jared's chest, his arms wrapped tightly around his waist. "Nothing. I just had a very bad dream that I don't ever want to repeat."

"Must have been bad," said Jared, "You're covered in a cold sweat." He rubbed Jon's back, then ran his fingers through his hair, getting a low moan in response. Jared couldn't help but giggle. "How about we go back to bed?"

"I don't think I can sleep right now."

"Who said anything about sleeping?"

Jared lifted Jon's legs and placed them on his shoulders. He aligned the head of his penis against Jon's awaiting hole. Jared locked eyes with Jon, seeking approval to proceed. His response was a very warm, loving smile.

Jared pushed in, burying himself completely within Jon. As Jon felt Jared fill him he was overcome with a wave of intense happiness and began to weep.

"What's wrong baby? Am I hurting you?"

Jon shook his head no. "I'm just so... happy. Promise me you'll never leave."

Jared leaned down and kissed Jon on the forehead. "I promise baby. I'll never leave you, never again. You're my angel."

Jared locked his lips with his soulmate. That night, they made love for the first time of what was to be their new life together.
