Matt rolled over and looked at the clock. It looked like he had about fifteen minutes before it would go off. He was about to relax and doze for a bit, when he suddenly realized that the lights were on. He sat up and looked around at his room, trying to figure out why the lights would be on. Then he remembered--he'd fallen asleep last night listening to Nick’s CD. He'd been so exhausted last night. Despite that, he felt great today. Maybe he'd actually gotten enough sleep for a change.

He reached over and turned the alarm off, then got out of bed. He grabbed his glasses, and went into the bathroom. They were taping today, so he spent a few extra minutes shaving, trying to make sure he did a good job. He looked at himself in the mirror. Yeah, that looked pretty good. He knew they'd fix up anything he missed in makeup.

As he stepped into the shower, he thought about Nick. He hoped his voice would be okay today. Matt would really feel guilty if Nick's voice wasn't back to normal. He wondered if they had managed to arrange a part for Nick in the show today. Maybe he wouldn't tell Nick about that until he knew for sure. He'd hate to disappoint him.

Matt suddenly realized that he was daydreaming. He had to get going, or he'd be late. He stepped out of the shower, quickly dried off, and went to find something to wear. It took a few minutes to find something he thought looked okay. They'd dress him again when he got to the studio, but he wanted to look good this morning.

He was finally satisfied with what he saw when he looked in the mirror. A glance at the clock showed him that he was a bit early still, although he'd managed to squander about ten minutes so far this morning. He grabbed his jacket, and his cell phone. He was almost out the door when he remembered to take the CD from the stereo. He'd listen to that in the car on the way to the hotel.

On his way through the kitchen, he found that the coffee wasn't ready yet. Ah well--he'd get some at breakfast. For the first time in recent memory, he felt wide enough awake to drive without his morning coffee.

Nick jumped as the phone rang. He quickly picked it up, only to hear the recorded wake up call. Brian groaned and rolled over. "It's okay Brian, go back to sleep" Nick said quietly.

Nick got up and went into the bathroom. He felt his chin, and decided he'd shave this morning. With his blond hair, it was hard to see any whiskers, but he didn't want to take the chance. He was seeing Matt today. After shaving, Nick took a quick shower.

A few minutes later, Nick was going through his clothes, trying to find something acceptable to wear. The problem was that his clothes were all scattered everywhere, and it was mostly dark in the room. He didn't really want to wake Brian by turning the light on. Finally, he managed to find some jeans that looked pretty clean. He found a sweatshirt. Underwear and socks were easy to find--his shoes proved to be a bigger problem. Eventually he managed to sort his shoes from Brian's, and found two that matched.

He went back into the bathroom to make sure he looked okay. A quick check in the mirror showed him that he looked all right. Not his best, but it would have to do. His hair was getting a bit long though--he'd have to remember to either get it cut or go for a ponytail. That brought a smile to his face, as he imagined the look on Kevin's face if he showed up with a ponytail. Or worse yet, he could just imagine Kevin's reaction if he let his hair grow like one of the Hanson boys!

He left the bathroom, found his room key (or was it Brian's?), and left. Checking his watch, he found to his surprise that he was about fifteen minutes early for breakfast. Now that was really funny--Nick was never early! He was almost tempted to knock on Kevin's door and wake him up, just to show him that miracles did happen.

At the front desk, he confirmed that they had instructions to send Matt into the dining room. Satisfied, he went there himself. The waitress quickly let him into a private room, then left to bring him some coffee. He settled down to wait for Matt.

Traffic was good, and Matt found himself at the hotel early. He'd only been able to listen to half of the CD before he'd arrived. He found a spot in the hotel's underground parking lot. He hoped that would be a good spot to park--you could never tell where fans were hiding. The parking lot looked to be pretty quiet, although those fans were still out front on the street.

Matt found the elevator, and rode it up to the lobby. When he reached the front desk, he was immediately greeted by name, and directed to the dining room. As he entered the dining room, he saw a waitress going into a door with a pot of coffee. Another waitress quickly came over and directed him to the same door.

When Matt entered the door, he found the waitress pouring coffee for Nick. "Good morning Nick" he said.

Nick looked up and smiled. "Hi Matt." Nick stood up and shook Matt's hand. "It's good to see you again."

Matt sat down at the table, and then Nick sat. The waitress had poured coffee for both of them, and left. "Ah. This is the stuff that makes morning bearable." Matt took a drink of coffee and looked up at Nick.

"Was traffic light this morning?" Nick asked.

"Huh? Oh, yeah actually it was."

Seeing the question on Matt's face, Nick laughed and said "You are early you know."

"Oh, I guess I am." The Matt remembered something Nick had said before. "Hey, if I'm early, what are you doing here? You're the one who's always late. At least, that's what you told me."

Nick giggled. "Yeah, I surprised myself this morning. I wish Kevin were here to witness it. He'll never believe me."

"I'll have to be sure to remember to tell him. That is, if I ever meet him."

"That's right--I haven't introduced you to the guys have I?" Nick smirked. "I suppose we could go up now, and wake them all up."

Matt laughed. "That's cruel Nick. Besides, they'd make you pay for that."

"You're right--I'd really pay for it. Still, it's almost worth it."

The waitress returned at that point, and took their breakfast order. When she left, Matt said, "Your voice sounds a lot better today."

"Hey, I'd forgotten about that. I really didn't feel very good last night, but I feel great this morning. Did I really sound that bad?"

"Yeah, you did. Maybe you should be careful today, and not strain yourself. I'd hate to be responsible for you to lose your voice."

Nick smiled, and quickly changed the subject. "So, is it going to be a good show today?"

"I don't know about that--they've got me in every scene this week. It's going to be a long day for me."

"You'll be okay I'm sure."

The conversation quickly turned to the various actors on the show, with Matt telling Nick what he thought about each of them. As a group, Matt got along with everyone, and for the most part they had fun on the show. By the time the food was gone, they were back chatting like old friends.

Matt was careful to keep track of the time this morning. "I think we've got to get going now Nick" he said.

Nick finished his coffee in one swallow, and said, "Okay, I'm ready."

"You know, drinking hot coffee like that isn't great for your voice."

Nick looked startled. "You sound like Brian. Come on, let's get out of here."

"Don't we need to get the bill?"

"No. I had it charged to the room. Where did you park your car?"

"Downstairs in the underground lot. I figured that was probably best."

"Sounds good. Let's go."

When Nick entered the lobby, one of the fans outside started to scream and point. Luckily, the doorman prevented her from running into the lobby. However, it seemed unlikely that he would be able to stop all of them, as the rest of the fans were starting for the lobby. Nick and Matt sprinted for the elevators. They were fortunate to find one waiting.

"That was close." Nick said. "It's nice to have devoted fans and such, but I wish they'd learn to control themselves."

Matt laughed. "Soon you'll be an old has-been like me and they'll forget you."

Nick looked really surprised. "What? You're not an old has-been!"

The elevator doors opened, and they exited into the parking lot. "You don't see a mob waiting for me do you?"

Matt was really just teasing, but Nick didn't seem to understand that. Nick looked really worried that Matt didn't think he was popular. Matt looked over, and found Nick thinking hard. "Don't worry Nick--I'm just kidding with you." Nick looked up. "Really. I'm happy with the recognition I get. I'm really not interested in being a big star. Acting is just fun, well mostly anyway, and it pays well."

They reached Matt's car. Matt unlocked the door for Nick, and then walked around to the driver's side. Once they were inside the car, Nick said, "You really don't want big fame?"

"No. It is nice to be recognized, but that's really never been my reason for acting." As Matt started the car, the Backstreet Boys CD started to play. Matt quickly turned it off and looked at Nick. "Sorry."

Nick laughed. "So, did you like it?"

"Yeah, although I haven't listened to it all yet. I fell asleep last night after a couple of songs, and the drive over here was too short to play the whole CD."

"Well, I hope you like it when you finally manage to find the time." Matt looked over at Nick, to find that Nick had a big grin. "I'm just kidding. I know you've got a lot going on."

"I do want to listen to it. I really do."

"I believe you Matt. It's no big deal."

Matt was surprised when they reached the studio gate. Someone had actually done what he'd asked, and Nick's name was on the list. It seemed that miracles really were possible today.

When they got to the studio, they were pretty much right on time. Will was there in his usual spot by the door. "Hi Matt. You look better today--no hot date last night?"

"Oh hi Will. Have you met Nick before?" Matt had discovered that the easiest way to avoid one of Will's jokes was to ignore it, and change the subject. Fortunately, introducing Nick was a good distraction. He watched as the two of them shook hands. "So, where is everyone? I was expecting Danielle to be waiting at the gate for us or something."

Will laughed. "She's around here somewhere. I think she's trying to play hard to get." Will looked at Nick. "She's been just a bit excited since she heard you were coming here today."

"Oh boy, just what I needed today." Nick said. Clearly, he wasn't looking forward to another run in with fans today.

"We had sort of a close call this morning on the way over here. It seems like Nick's fans are out to kill him or something." Matt was enjoying this.

Nick chuckled. "Yeah, or something." He looked at Matt. "That wasn't really a very close call this morning you know. I've had a lot worse."

"Lucky you." Matt said. "Come on, let's go and see if there's any coffee around here somewhere." The three of them started off toward the coffee and muffins.

As they walked past the makeup room, they heard a yelp, and Danielle suddenly appeared. "Well Matt, aren't you going to introduce us?" Before Matt had any time to say anything, Danielle continued. "I'm Danielle Fishel. I've been a big fan of yours for a long time."

"It's nice to meet you Danielle. I've watched you on the show for years, as Matt will tell you."

Danielle looked happy. Then she suddenly realized that her makeup was only half on. Bits of tissue paper were tucked into her collar and her hair was in disarray. Suddenly looking embarrassed, she said, "I guess I better go and finish in makeup. I just wanted to welcome you here today."

"Thanks Danielle. I'm sure I'll see you again a bit later."

Matt and Nick walked the rest of the way to the coffee without further incidents. They joined Will there. Will said, "So, that's our Danielle. Somehow, I don't think that went entirely as she planned."

Matt and Nick laughed. "You're right." Matt said. "I'm sure she planned something much more dignified."

They were still standing there when the director appeared. "Oh, good, you're here Matt. There are a couple of last minute changes we need to go over."

"Okay. Have you met Nick Carter?" Matt introduced them.

"Actually, Nick is the reason for one of the changes. Did you tell him about it?"

"No, I didn't want to say anything until I knew for sure." Nick looked completely confused. Matt smiled, and said, "Well, I guess I better tell you. They want you to appear in the show today."

"That's right Nick" the director interrupted. "We've cleared it with your management. Matt said you wouldn't mind. I'm afraid it's just a small walk on role, but I'm sure you won't have any trouble with it."

Nick really was confused now. He looked at Matt, and discovered that Matt looked worried. "I'm sorry. I guess I should have asked you first, but..."

Nick smiled at Matt. "No, it's okay. I don't mind--actually it will be fun."

"Well, let's go into a room, so I can show you what you'll be doing." Matt followed, as the director led Nick over to one of the conference rooms. They spent half an hour going through Nick's role in the show, and working through the changes for Matt.

From there, they went over to wardrobe. Matt was given the two outfits he was supposed to wear for the show today, and he got changed into the first one. It took longer for them to find something for Nick to wear, but he was only in one scene, which made that task easier.

It was about 11:30 when Will poked his head in and announced he was heading out for lunch. Matt and Nick finished up, and then joined him. When they got to the cafeteria, they found something that looked edible, and then joined the rest of the cast at a table. Matt introduced Nick to everyone. Danielle seemed to have settled down a bit. At least, she didn't pester Nick the whole time.

Once again, when Matt and Nick got started talking, they lost track of everything else. When Matt looked up to ask Will something, he was surprised to find that everyone else had returned to the studio.

"Where did everyone go?" Matt said.

"I don't know--maybe they got bored or something."

"I hope we're not late. Maybe we should get going too."

Matt was surprised to discover that the studio audience was already seated when they got back to the studio. Once again, he'd lost track of time while sitting and chatting with Nick. It didn't seem to matter what they talked about, time just seemed to fly by. Matt hurried into makeup, with Nick following along behind. Actually, Nick had stuck pretty close all day long now that Matt thought about it.

Fortunately, he'd done a good job shaving this morning, so makeup didn't take too long. It was a bit of a rush job. They didn't have to hurry with Nick, as he didn't appear until later in the show. One of the assistants stuck her head in the door, and told Matt he was supposed to be on stage now.

Matt jumped up, and said, "I'll catch you later Nick. It sounds like I'm late."

"Okay. Break a leg, or whatever."

"Thanks Nick. You too."

Matt left the makeup room, and made his way over to his position for the first scene. Everyone else was already there, waiting for him.

"Are you okay Matt? You seem a bit distracted today. It's not like you to be late," the director said.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Sorry."

The first few scenes went smoothly enough. The audience was laughing right on cue for a change, and once Matt got his concentration back, he felt better. It would have been nicer if he'd had more time to prepare. Normally, he'd have spent a few more hours on the script, but there wasn't enough time this week.

Between scenes, he managed to check on Nick. He was clearly enjoying watching the show, and seemed to be relaxed about his part.

Nick's part in the show today was a minor one. He was going to appear as a waiter in one scene. The scene was set in the college's recreation center. Nick was supposed to be working at the coffee bar, and serve coffee to Matt and Rider Strong.

The scene started properly, with Matt and Rider talking (or more accurately, arguing) as they approached the coffee bar. It was when Nick appeared and started to ask them what he could get for them that everything fell apart.

Someone in the audience started screaming, "Nick! Nick! Nick!" Matt looked at the look of shock on Nick's face, and started laughing. That caused Rider to start. Nick looked confused, then seeing Matt's uncontrollable laughter, joined in.

Meanwhile, there were half a dozen girls in the audience jumping up and down, and pointing at Nick. Most of the audience didn't seem to know what was going on. One of the girls started to climb down from the stands--she looked intent on getting to Nick. When Matt saw that, he grabbed Nick, and they fled backstage.

Once they were backstage, Matt burst into laughter again. Nick looked at him and said, "Okay, what's so funny?"

"You should have seen the look on your face. It was..." It took a few minutes before Matt regained the ability to talk again.

"Okay, you try it sometime. One of these days, my fans are going to go too far. They make me nervous."

"Sorry. It just sort of caught me off guard."

Now that Matt had stopped laughing, they could hear the audience. It sounded like things were getting pretty quiet out there. Matt looked out onto the set, and sure enough, it looked like the audience was under control again. "Come on, I think we should get back out there."

Nick was clearly hesitant to show himself again. Matt went in first, then turned and motioned to Nick to follow. When Nick stepped back onto the set, one of the girls in the audience started jumping up and down, obviously very excited. Nick moved further in, and found the entire audience watching him.

Oh well. "Hi. I'm Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys." Nick paused for a minute, as this announcement caused the girls to start screaming. "I was just planning on watching my friend Mathew Lawrence work today, but somehow, they put me to work instead." Nick looked over at Matt and smiled. "I'll figure out some way to repay the favor."

Matt laughed, and walked over to where Nick stood. Nick turned back to the audience, and said, "If we can get through the rest of the show, I promise I'll sign autographs for anyone who wants one. I'll even make sure Matt signs one if you want. However, we do need to continue the show."

At this point, the director walked out on stage. "That sounds like a good idea Nick." Looking at the audience, he continued, "Can we finish the scene now?" The audience looked a bit chagrinned. Nick gave the audience a small wave, and returned to his position. Matt went over to join Rider, and they started the scene again. This time, they got through it without any interruptions.

The rest of the show went well, and they actually wrapped it up a bit early. Thinking back on the shoot, Matt realized that they had only done many of the scenes once. That was a bit unusual.

As Matt left the set at the end of the final scene, he found Nick waiting for him. "You did a good job back there with the audience Nick. I wasn't sure that we'd ever get them calmed down."

"That's just practice. Kevin is really good at calming the crowd down when things are starting to get ugly. I just did what he would have done if he were here--talked to them directly, and bargained some autographs away."

"Yeah, and you sucked me into the deal too I noticed."

"Hey, why should you get off easily?" Nick laughed.

"So, what are you doing now that we're done here?" Matt asked.

"I don't know. Do you want to go out to dinner again or something? The guys are probably still at the studio."

"You mentioned before that you were tired of restaurant food all the time." Nick nodded. "Would you like to come over to my house, and meet the family for dinner? It won't be fancy, but mom can cook."

"That'd be great Matt."

"Are you sure? We could go back to Tony's if you'd rather, or..."

"No. A home cooked meal sounds much better to me. Your mom wouldn't mind would she?"

"I'm sure she'll be happy to meet you. She quizzed me about you last night. Let me call and make sure that nothing else is planned."

Matt went over and retrieved his phone from his jacket and called home. His mom picked it up almost immediately.

"Hi Mom."

"Hi Matt. I thought it was probably you. How's the show going?"

"Actually, it went pretty well. We've wrapped it up already."

"Oh good. Will you be here for dinner then?"

"That's why I called. Is it okay if I bring Nick over for dinner?"

"Sure honey. We don't have anything planned tonight. Are you going to go out after dinner?"

"Um, I don't know. I'll have to see what Nick wants to do."

"Okay dear. How long will you be?"

"We should be there in about an hour."

"Okay, we'll see you then."

"Okay mom."

Matt looked at Nick, and said, "Okay, Mom is expecting us. Ready to tackle those fans of yours?"

Nick sighed. "I guess. Come on, let's do this."

It took about half an hour before the fans seemed to be satisfied. Matt was surprised by the number of times they wanted his autograph. It seemed like all of the girls wanted to know how long he'd been friends with Nick, what they did when they got together and such. Some of the girls were really quite pushy with their personal questions. The worst was when one of the girls asked Matt whether he wore boxers or briefs.

"Excuse me?" Matt said. He was shocked by this question. He'd been asked personal things before, but this was a bit much.

Nick sort of rescued him. "Well, I can't tell you what Matt wears everyday, but today it's white Calvin Klein briefs."

Matt was really embarrassed now, and started to feel his face grow warm. Nick just sort of smirked at him, and went back to signing autographs.

Later, while they were getting changed back into their street clothes, Matt said "What was all that about boxers or briefs?"

Nick laughed. "That's become a common question. You'll get used to it."

"What business of theirs is it whether I wear boxers or briefs? And why did you tell them?"

"What, is it some big secret? I'm not quite sure where it started, but if you go looking on the web sites out there, it's one of those facts they list, like what your favorite color is."

"But, it's private!"

That got a big laugh from Nick. "Nothing is private. They want to know absolutely everything about me. I used to think it was embarrassing, but I've gotten used to it." There was a pause, then Nick said "You know, I'll bet you'll get a lot more attention now Matt."

"What?"

"Well, I told the audience that we were friends. That's news as far as the magazines and the internet goes. I'll bet you'll find reporters and fans watching you more often now."

"Gee, thanks. That's just what I need."

Nick just laughed.

On their way out, they ran into Danielle. "Hi guys. Did you enjoy the day Nick?"

"Yeah, it was interesting. Aside from those fans that is."

"Listen, a bunch of us are going out tonight. Would you like to go?"

Matt and Nick looked at each other, and then Nick turned to Danielle. "Thanks Danielle, but we've already got plans." Matt was surprised--he'd have thought that Nick would rather go out with everyone.

"Oh, that's too bad." Danielle looked crushed. Clearly, she'd been hoping to get to spend more time with Nick tonight.

"Another time perhaps. It was nice meeting you. You did a great job today."

"Thanks. It was nice to meet you too."

Nick started walking off towards Matt's car. Matt said "Have a good time tonight Danielle." She sort of waved at him, and Matt ran after Nick.

When they got into the car, and were back out into traffic, Nick said, "I hope you don't mind. I just didn't want to go out tonight. I'd much rather just hang out with you."

Actually, Matt was thrilled. "That sounds good to me. Do you want to go out after dinner?"

"Actually, I'd rather just veg out, maybe watch some TV or something. Is that okay?"

"No problem here Nick. So, did you have a good time today?"

"Yes, I did. It was interesting. I've done some acting before, but I've never had a chance to see how a TV show is done before."

That got them started talking again, and before Matt knew it, they were home.

 To be continued...
