The start of summer was very hectic for all of us. With classes having ended, people were busy with packing and moving off campus for break. Some were frantically running around trying to find last minute internships. Those graduating, like Karsh, were trying to get used to the idea of no longer being in school. The day after Kal's parents hosted a party to celebrate Karsh's graduation, was Sunday. The great thing about Asha and Lori not drinking at the party, was that they weren't hungover; which meant they were able to cook for family dinner. All of the guys, and our dads, managed to make our way to my parents' house, and take naps before dinner time.
Prior to dessert being served, Dig asked if I'd go on a walk with him. Given that he'd been kind of down over the past few days, I figured that it'd be a good idea for just the two of us to get some fresh air. We rarely had any privacy with the whole family being in one place over the past week. I missed our moments. We both gave Kal a kiss on the cheek when we told him that we'd be sneaking out for a bit.
"What's up?" I asked my boyfriend as we reached the park two blocks from my house. With the exception of asking to use my lighter for the blunt that we shared, he was quiet.
"You know that I love you, right?" he looked at me, while sitting on a bench.
"You okay?" I became worried, feeling the need to sit next to him.
"Answer the question," he responded. "You know that I love you?"
"Yeah, I know." Of course I knew.
"And you know I'd do anything for you?"
"What's going on?"
"I'm going home for the summer," he stated.
"I know," we discussed our plans for the summer break multiple times. I'd spend most of June in town with Kal, while he was in Bayonne. Then all three of us would spend a week, together, in Brooklyn before Dig started summer training for baseball.
"No, babe," he held my left hand, looking down at the ground. "I'm `going home'. My Pops told me it was time to get serious."
"Serious? About what?" I didn't understand.
"Going into the family business. I gotta start working for him this summer," he wouldn't look up.
"Your Dad runs a garbage company," literally. Dig was a communications major.
"Babe," he pointed his head upwards towards the night sky, thinking for a second. His eyes finally landed on mine. "My Pop's business is in Bayonne."
"I know."
"Babe, you know what I mean," he squeezed my hand. I felt dumb because I didn't get what he was saying. "My father owns a company in Bayonne. I'm the oldest son. It's my job to take over after I graduate."
"But that's next year," I pointed out.
"He wants me to start next week. Until I leave for training."
"But what about us? Our plans?"
"There can't --" he let go of my hand, looking at the ground once more. "There can't be an us."
"Huh?" I didn't hear what I thought I heard.
"I promised my Pop that I'd focus on the business."
"But what does that --"
"There can't be anything going on other than the business, and baseball."
"Say it," I found myself speaking. Realizing what was happening. "Look at me and say it."
We sat there in silence. Him looking at the ground, me looking at him. His left leg kept bouncing, his fingers rubbing his temples. I focused on his lips moving in sequence with his deep breaths.
He finally looked forward, then turned to face me. Dig stared into my eyes as we both fought back tears.
"We're done," he whispered, before standing then walking away.
I sniffled as I watched him walk out of the park, turning in the direction that led to my parents' house. Feeling as if I had an organ ripped out of my body. My chest felt heavy, my eyes were unfocused, tears ran down my face. He dumped me.
I'm not sure how long I sat on the park bench, attempting to deal with the crazy thoughts in my head; but I finally made my way back home. Dig's jeep was gone, so were a few of the other cars. I didn't want to face anyone yet. I didn't know what to say. I simply walked in the front door, and ran straight upstairs. Ignoring anyone who called my name.
After crying in the shower, I checked that no one was in the hall before heading into my room. I just wanted to sleep, but knew that I couldn't once I saw Sean and Kal sitting on the futon. They looked at me with a mix of confusion and worry as I quietly made my way around the room to put on gym shorts and a t-shirt.
"What's wrong?" Sean broke the silence.
"Nothing," I responded, sitting on the side of my bed.
"Bullshit!" He hit back.
"You put on clothes! Something's wrong," Kal stated. I would have laughed if I were in the mood.
"What happened?" Sean asked. "First Dig comes and tells everyone that him and Scooter had to go. Now you look like this. What's wrong?"
"I just want some sleep," I laid down, resting my head on a pillow. Not giving them anything else.
"That's how we're doing this?" Sean sounded annoyed. "Fine. But I'm coming back."
With Sean having left the room, I heard shuffling before feeling Kal getting into bed with me. Nothing was said. He cuddled up to my back, kissed my neck, then held me as I cried myself to sleep.
The next three days were depressing as fuck. The only times that I left my room were when I went to the bathroom, down to the kitchen, or outside for a smoke. I didn't talk to my Dad or Kal at all, and completely ignored Cory and Sean. I even made sure that my phone was on Do Not Disturb with the exception of Dig. In hopes that he'd call. He never did.
On Thursday I walked into my room, after taking a shower, to find Sean sitting on my bed with his arms crossed. He was relentless. I knew that he was mad, I was part of the reason; but, I wasn't in the mood to talk. I repeated the same actions that I did on Sunday night. Quietly getting dressed, not paying him any attention. My plan to go down to the kitchen for breakfast was halted by him standing in the doorway, blocking me in. After a few attempts to move around him, I stood with my arms crossed. Rolling my eyes.
"Move," was the only word I said to him.
"Aye! He speaks!" A smirk appeared across his face. "Now try using manners this time."
"Move, dipshit."
"Not quite. Try again," he was testing me.
"I'm hungry, I want breakfast." I stated.
"It's 1 o'clock. Breakfast is over." I rolled my eyes again, then attempted to push the former lacrosse player out of my way. I gave up pretty quickly. "We'll get food on the road."
"I'm not going anywhere with you," I didn't want to leave the house.
"The fuck you're not," he still wouldn't move. "The `rents already gave me permission to manhandle you if I've gotta. Either way you're gettin in the car."
I knew better than to fight him when he made that kind of threat. To be honest, I wasn't surprised that my parents let Sean do his "Big Brother" act; hoping that it'd make things better. I grabbed my phone, wallet, and a pair of sneakers then followed him down the stairs. The house was very quiet when we left. Dad and Kal were both at work, and I'd planned to just sleep the day away with them gone.
It wasn't until we crossed over the George Washington Bridge that I realized I had no idea where Sean was driving to. If we were heading to Brooklyn, we would've gone south. Once we reached the Bronx, I was really confused. I'd only heard stories about the place, and knew of the zoo. Something told me that Sean knew me well enough to NOT to take me to the zoo to cheer me up.
"Where are we going?" I looked over at him, tapping his thumbs on the steering wheel.
"Oh! You're talking again!?" That damned smirk appeared once more, as he reached to lower the music.
"I'm hungry," I told him. I was, but I wasn't.
"You'll eat when we get there."
"Where?! Canada?!" All I knew was that we were driving north.
"Not quite," he paused. "Connecticut."
"Connecticut?!" I was shocked. "Why Connecticut? What's --" My mother! "You're not taking me to see Mum!"
"Yup," he nodded. His eyes never left the road. "She'll be home by the time we get there."
"I don't wanna go," I pouted.
"You're already on the way," he was unphased.
"So? Just drop me off. I'll take the train back."
"You want your mother to kill me? Fuck that."
"Why are you doing this?!" I groaned.
"You won't talk to me. You won't talk to Kal. Dad is losing his shit." Pause. "Whatever happened with you and Dig --"
"Don't say his name," it was the first time I'd heard it in days. I could see Sean thinking for a few seconds, before his mouth dropped open.
"Nooo!" He figured it out.
"Yup," I dryly confirmed.
"Seriously?" He knew I wasn't lying. "I'm sorry dude."
"Mhmm," I turned my head to look out the window.
The next thing I knew, I was being woken up by Sean. After wiping my eyes, I looked around to see that we arrived at my Aunt Lisa's house. The quintessential colonial house on a plot of land that was surrounded by trees and hedges, at the end of a quiet New Haven block. The only thing that seemed different from the last time I'd visited was her new car. Along with the fresh coat of white paint on the porch railing.
We hadn't reached the front door when it opened. My Aunt gave a warm smile as the smell of her famous chicken parmesan drew me inside. I barely heard anything that either her or Sean said as I made my way through the hall from the foyer, into the kitchen. My mother was at the stove, fiddling with the knobs as she stirred a pot. My stomach grumbled.
"Is that my baby Ishmael?!" My Mum yelled, before turning around to see me standing in the doorway. "Ishmael!" her face lit up, as she frantically turned down the temperatures on the stove. "My beautiful boy!" she walked towards me, pulling me in for a strong hug. I could barely breathe as she kissed all over my cheeks.
"Ma!" I was strained. "I can't breathe!"
"Hug your mother, Ishmael," she responded. I obliged. It felt so good to hug her again. It hit me how much I'd missed having my Mum around. I teared up a bit.
"Shhh! It's okay, bambino. It'll be okay," she soothed me.
"At least you got a hug," I heard Aunt Lisa walking into the kitchen. "This one didn't even say a word."
"I smelled the chicken parm," I laughed, wiping the tears from my face.
"My cooking does that to men," she quipped as Mum and I separated.
"It also kills them," I joked as I reached out to give her a hug. She smelled of garlic and rosemary.
"Your uncle died naturally!" She chuckled, while almost breaking my back. "He would've loved to see you. You were his favorite."
"Can't. Breathe." I forgot how strong Sicilian women were.
"Aye! No killin' him til he talks!" Sean said, walking in from the hallway with my Mum's dog in his arms. "I put the bags by the stairs."
We exchanged pleasantries while my Mum and Aunt finished cooking. The two sisters raved about how much we've grown since we were kids, then discussed my cousins Chris and Stefan. Chris, Lisa's oldest son, was in Sicily for the summer learning how to properly make wine; Stefan had finished his junior year at Duke. As dinner went on they told us that we'd be seeing Stefan in the morning because he was due to fly in on the red eye. They also decided to pry into Sean's dating life, saying that he needed to "stop making excuses" for why he doesn't seriously date. He buttered them up by stating that no woman could compare to his two favorite aunts. The dude could charm paint off of a wall.
"So, who dumped who?" Aunt Lisa asked as she handed me a plate of pie.
"Lisa!" My mother looked shocked, then glanced at me while sipping her tea. I glared at Sean.
"I didn't say shit!" He raised his hands, then reached across the table to grab the plate from my aunt.
"Oh c'mon!" Lisa cried. "You're not talking. You're in your room all day. You're barely eating. If you were 14 I'd say you found out about your body. But you're your father's son, so I already know that you're fucking."
"Marone!" My mother and I let out at the same time.
"Just tell us what happened, so that we can help you."
"That's it though. I don't know what happened." I told them. "One minute everything was good. I mean really good! Then the next... I'm sitting at the park tryna figure out what was said to me."
"What'd he say, dear?" My Mum asked with sympathy in her eyes.
"I swear to God, if he --" Sean was cut off by Aunt Lisa clearing her throat.
"It's... It's what he didn't say!" I was trying to find my words. "He started talking about having to `go home' for summer. Then said he's going into the family business after he graduates. So because of that we can't be together. It was weird." And vague as fuck! I started to eat my pie.
"Is this the boyfriend from Bayonne or the Indian one?" Lisa asked. I was surprised because I'd never said anything to her about having two boyfriends. "Close your mouth and chew. Your mother already told me all about `em." Of course they gossiped. "So which one is it?"
"Bayonne," I said, swallowing a bite of pie.
"Dig," Sean added.
"Dig?! What kinda name is that? He work at a graveyard?" Lisa joked.
"You don't wanna know," my mother told her. Knowing the real reason for Dig's nickname.
"Let me get this straight. His name is Dig. He's from Bayonne. And his father wants him to go into the family business?" I nodded in response to Lisa's questions, still eating my pie. "He Italian?"
"His family's from Naples," Sean said.
"How you know?" She looked at him. "You fuckin' him too?"
"Lisa!" My mother acted shocked. She knew her sister by now.
"He was my roommate sophomore year."
"Where'd he hide his gun?" Lisa asked him. We all looked at her, confused. "Oh c'mon! You're Sicilian! You should know better!" More confusion. I'm from the suburbs of Jersey, not Sicily! "Answer me this. You met his family?"
"His brother is in our house," I answered. "Scooter's actually Sean's Little Brother. We also met his Dad a few weeks ago."
"His father," she lit a cigarette. "Old school? Lots of gold?"
"And a hairy chest to match," Sean laughed.
"There you have it," Lisa puffed her cigarette, sitting back in her chair.
"Have what?" I was even more confused.
"What are you getting at Lisa?" My mother looked at her sister.
"C'mon, Cosette! You of all people should know!"
"Know what?!"
"You remember Tommy Vitale?" Lisa asked my mother, who nodded. "Remember why Papa told you to keep away from him?"
"Of course," she nonchalantly shrugged, looking at me. Her facial expression went from calm, to quizzical, to scared. "No! He's such a nice boy!"
"So was Tommy."
"Who's Tommy Vitale?" Sean asked the question that was on both of our minds.
"Someone that your mother --"
"He's an old friend from back home," my mother cut off her sister, before standing to clear the table. "You boys go up to bed. You've had a long day and should sleep."
"But Ma!" Sean and I whined.
"Go to bed," she glared at us. We knew better than to argue when we saw that face.
I woke up to the smell of coffee coming from the kitchen. After Mum sent us upstairs, Sean and I quickly knocked out in my cousin Chris' bed. Good food and challenging conversation will do that to you. When I noticed that Sean wasn't in bed, I figured he made his way to the kitchen to have a cup of Joe. Wearing only a pair of boxers, I went to the bathroom to wash up then made my way down the stairs. Surprised that I didn't trip over the dog as he kept stopping in front of me. There were two voices in the kitchen making conversation; I knew Sean's, but couldn't quite recognize the other. I was shocked when I saw my cousin Stefan leaning against the counter that was opposite of the island where Sean was sitting.
The skinny bodied, big footed, thick glasses wearing, tall nerd that I knew in high school turned into a hunk! He was usually the tallest in the room (standing 6'3) and still wore glass; but, you could tell that he'd gained a sense of confidence over the years. He also filled out a bit, and gained some muscles. But the best thing was that he cut his fro! The dude never let anyone braid his hair, and it'd always looked messy as fuck. I knew that his mother was excited that her "baby boy" finally had a brush cut, and was letting people see his brown eyes.
"You dating wise guys now?" he asked, holding his coffee mug. His voice had gotten deeper; sounding more like an old school Italian from Brooklyn, than he did when he actually lived there.
"Huh?" I barely understood any words before my coffee.
"Let him wake up first," Sean chuckled as I walked to pour myself a cup. "Princess ain't shit until she's had caffeine. Almost bit off a dude's hand once."
"You should've set hours for my room," I quipped after my first sip.
"Hours?" Stefan asked.
"House stuff," Sean responded. This was the "normal" side of the family. The boring suburban folks.
"Right. I forgot you guys were in a frat," Stefan nodded.
"I wish I could," I caught myself saying out loud. Sean's eyes popped.
"Riiight! Your Mum said that's where you met the dude," Stefan picked up. "Which brings me back to... You dating wise guys?!"
"What are you talking about?" I sat next to Sean at the island. "Where's Mum?"
"They're at work." My cousin explained. "Now answer the question."
"What wise guy are you talking about?" I looked at him, then to Sean who shrugged.
"You seriously don't know?" I shook my head to his question. "Oh shit! You really don't know!"
"Know what?!" I was getting tired of the vagueness.
"After I got in last night, Ma filled me in on a few things," he sipped from his cup. "Mostly about you. Apparently Ish can get two boyfriends, but I can't bring home one girl!"
"Sounds like your Mum," I rolled my eyes. She was always trying to marry us off.
"Then she told me about what happened." Pause. Sip. "She can put two and two together. I can put two and two together. And we don't even know the guy!"
"Put what together? Use your fuckin' words!"
"Your boyfriend --"
"EX-boyfriend," I corrected him.
"Your EX-boyfriend is a wise guy. He's part of the family." Sean and I blinked at this statement. "You know... La Casa Nostra."
"Holy fuck!" Sean exclaimed. There wasn't enough coffee in my system for this. "Are you serious?"
"Dead ass," Stefan was confident.
"You and Lisa need to stop watching old movies," I stated.
"And you better block his number before you become a goomar." Stefan looked at me. "One gold chain is all it takes."
I tried my best to ignore whatever conspiracy Lisa and Stefan wanted to believe. Mostly because they always believe any conspiracy that didn't require actual evidence. Someone stayed single for too long, they were gay. A woman manages to keep a healthy rose bush for three years in a row, she's a witch. My boyfriend dumped me to work for his family, he's in the mob. They're crazy!
Thankfully the rest of the day was simple. The guys and I walked around New Haven for a bit, then got groceries to cook for our moms. Of course I did the cooking, but made them clean up behind me. My Mum and Aunt were very happy to have all of us together, eating a family dinner, picking on Sean whenever he asked questions about random Italian or Black idioms. You'd think that after fifteen years he'd finally understand some of them. Once dinner was over Stefan, Sean, and I headed back to Jersey. My Mum and Aunt both needed rest after having to deal with teaching rich private school kids, and I missed my own bed. I was glad that they got me out of the house. Weird conspiracies aside, I knew that my family was looking out for me.
------------------------------------------ This is the start of Ish's sophomore year. His summer is going to be a bit of a rollercoaster; then again... When isn't his life a rollercoaster? haha
Just wait... It'll be a wild ride. ------------------------------------------
