Chapter 1
"This shouldn't be happening" I thought to myself as we continued to kiss. His lips were so soft, as his hand on the back of my head kept me in place. I could've resisted -I should've resisted- but I didn't want to. "This is so wrong".
He was supposed to just be giving me a ride home, after running into each other downtown. Now here I am, making out with my ex's cousin, in the front seat of his Mum's car, sitting in my family's driveway. I wasn't mad about it, at all; but, I know how angry my ex would be if he found out. Hell, his anger was a major part of why we ended things.
"I couldn't help myself," he said as we separated, I was dumbfounded without a word to be spoken. "I've been wanting to do that for awhile, but never had the balls."
Even though it was dark outside, the light from the front porch made it relatively easy to see that he was blushing. Avoiding eye contact. Was he really into me?
I'd always thought that Kal was hot! A beautiful 6'1 Punjabi with a slim toned body, long fingers, gorgeous wavy shoulder length hair, light brown eyes, and darker skin than most Indians that I've met. He reminded me of a darker Imran Khan. He was also smart, witty, charming, and had great taste in music. How could this university sophomore be into a high school senior?! Sure, I was turning 18 in two weeks -and graduating the week before- but he had real options! And... I didn't even know that he liked guys!!
"Please say something, you're starting to scare me," his eyes widened with fear.
"I... I thought you were straight," was all that I could manage to say.
"Well, I'm not anymore," he chucked to himself. "Can't get you outta my head."
He did not just say that!?!
"But.. but..." I stammered, speechless.
"Go inside, it's late," he told me. "We'll talk tomorrow, I promise."
I couldn't make heads or tails over what was going on, but decided to follow his directions. He grabbed onto my hand before I opened the passenger side door, promising to text me when he got home. Then, proceeded to watch me walk into the front door of the house before driving off.
It was a typical Friday night at the house. My parents were out either partying, or swinging, or both; so I had the house to myself, as usual. Even though I rarely saw much of them, I always knew that they loved me. My Dad owned one of the biggest plumbing companies in the area, and my Mum was an English teacher at the high school. They also owned three rental properties that took up a great deal of their free time. After years of trying to have kids, they gave up and worked as much as they could to keep themselves occupied. As well as traveling all over the world. One day when my Mum was 36 (my Dad was 40), her doctor told her that she was pregnant. She was shocked, but eager to be a mother.
The first few years of my life were charmed. Mum stayed at home to raise me, while Dad worked. They took me on vacations around the world, showing me as many different cultures as possible. I was always dressed in expensive clothes, and had the latest gaming consoles and laptops. They spoiled me because they loved me. Constantly calling me their "perfect child"; probably because I rarely caused a fuss and generally kept to myself when I was home. When I started middle school, my Mum went back to work full time; she also started doing more work at the rental properties due to dad getting more and more plumbing contracts. Pretty soon there were notes on the kitchen counter telling me that dinner was in the oven, voicemails letting me know that they'd be home late, and lists of chores on the refrigerator. I didn't mind it because it gave me freedom to do what I wanted.
As long as my homework was done, and I brought home a decent report card, I got away with A LOT! Stayed up late to play video games, hung out with my best friends, and had impromptu pool parties. They never seemed to mind, as long as I was at the dinner table for Sunday dinner.
"You home yet?!" A text from my best friend Cory popped up on my phone.
"Yeh. Doors Open. About to Shower." I responded, as I walked up the stairs. I knew he'd be here before I finished washing up.
Standing in front of the full length mirror in the bathroom, I stared at my naked body. What did Kal -or any guy, for that matter- see in me? I was dark skinned, 5'10, slim bodied with no muscles (yet stronger than expected), my locks were just past my shoulders, my nerdy round glasses were noticeable, my size 8.5 feet were average. Nothing about me seemed special, but I knew I was attractive enough. If there's one thing that being the "gay fuckboi" of my high school has taught me, is that I'm definitely attractive enough. Even if I couldn't figure out why.
I was still washing my body when I heard Cory come into the bathroom. "How was the party?" he asked me.
"Nothing special," I told him. "Jessica got drunk and puked into a plant. Marco got shot down by every girl he tried to chat up. And Liam got into a fight with some kid from grade 10."
"Sounds like an exciting night to me," he retorted. "What about you? I saw you getting out of some dude's car."
"No biggie, to be honest," I was rinsing off. "Kal gave me a ride after we bumped into each other."
"Kal? As in Ravi's cousin?!" He sounded shocked.
"Yes, that Kal," I answered as I opened the curtain, and grabbed a towel from the rack. "HE said it'd be better than getting a ride from someone who was drunk."
"He's not wrong," I kept drying my body, as he leaned against the counter. This wasn't new for us. "By why was he there?"
"He wasn't," I threw the towel into the hamper then walked out of the bathroom towards my room, Cory following behind me. "His Mum has an apartment in the same building, and he stepped out for a smoke." I grabbed a pair of gym shorts and socks to put on. "When he saw me smoking, he recognized me, and we started talking. Next thing I knew we were in his Mum's car driving here." I purposely left out the kiss, I didn't want to hear his opinion about it yet.
"Did he mention you know who?" he referred to Ravi, not wanting to bring up his name again.
"Nah, surprisingly," I answered. "But we're meeting up tomorrow, so we'll see."
"Wait. What?!" He was sitting on the futon that was on the wall opposite of my bed. It was supposed to be his "bed" for when he spent the night (which was at least three nights a week), but we never kicked the habit of sharing my bed. We'd been sleep-dependent on each other since we were 5; at this point, we're just waiting until college before we quit. "But, he's his cousin!"
"I know, I know," I shrugged. "But we were talking about the new comics that released for summer kick off -"
"And you can never turn down a trip to the comic shop," he interrupted me, pointing out my bookshelf that was full of comics and collectibles.
"I'm a slut for a good storyline," I smirked.
"You're a slut in general," he rolled his eyes. "But isn't he straight?"
"I can't have friends?" I quipped.
"Aside from me and Sean? No." He nonchalantly started up the console to play a video game.
He wasn't completely wrong. I'd known Cory, and his brother Sean, since my family moved into the neighborhood when Cory and I were four years old. They lived across the street with their Mom, and quickly became my second family. We pretty much did everything together when my family wasn't traveling; sometimes he and his brother came on the trips with us. We rode the bus together, did school plays, played soccer, and hated the same hockey teams. It wasn't until we got to high school that things were different. He became more of a skater who hung out with a few of the burnouts, and I became an artsy kid who hung out with theater nerds; but that didn't really change us. Even whenI told him that I liked guys, he said that I was still his annoying brother, and that was it. Granted, he always asked my opinion of whether or not he looked good; but, I knew it was because he was always nervous when it came to talking to girls.
The dude was always a cutie, and one some days hot as fuck. He had a natural mediterranean tan, dark green eyes, an emo haircut with his natural dark brown hair covering one of his eyes. Standing 5'7, he had an average body with thick calves and a plump ass from skating on a daily basis. No matter what he wore (or didn't), he always looked good. But those hormonal high school nerves definitely had a chokehold on us throughout those years.
When I went downstairs to heat up a frozen pizza while he played the game, I kept wondering if Kal would actually text me. Sure, he'd promised me, but I was a dude who dated dudes - hell, I was a proud fuckboi - I knew better than to hold my breath. Until he did send a text.
KAL: MADE IT HOME! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU TOMORROW! ISH: SAME! THANKS FOR THE RIDE! KAL: ANYTIME! ;) KAL: WYD? ISH: HEATING UP A PIZZA FOR ME AND CORY. KAL: CORY? IS THAT MY COMPETITION? HAHA ISH: WHO SAID YOU WERE IN THE RUNNING? :P ISH: NAH. HE'S MY BESTIE. YOU MET HIM ONCE. KAL: OH! THE WHITE DUDE FROM THE SHOW? HE'S SICK ON THE DRUMS! ISH: AND SICK IN THE HEAD! LOL KAL: HE'S GOTTA BE IF HE'S FRIENDS WITH YOU. :P ISH: YOU'RE LUCKY YOU'RE CUTE. KAL: OH I KNOW. ;) KAL: GONNA KNOCK OUT. I'LL PICK YOU UP AT NOON. ISH: I HAVE A CAR. I CAN DRIVE MYSELF. KAL: NOT ON OUR FIRST DATE. KAL: GOOD NIGHT. Xx
Oh fuck! He used two x's! He must actually like me! WTF is actually happening? Wait! A DATE?! My mind started racing. What the fuck does one wear on a date to a comic shop?!
After Cory and I ate the pizza, we played a few rounds of Mortal Kombat before knocking out. When I woke up the next morning, he wasn't in bed with me. I turned to the clock, seeing that it was 9:30am; giving me plenty of time to have a cup of the coffee that I smelled from downstairs, before I started to get ready for my date.
"Hey sleepyhead," my Dad greeted me as I walked into the kitchen. He and Cory were sitting at the table wearing tank tops and boxers, sipping their coffees with their phones in hand. "Fresh pot just finished."
"Good," I groggily made my way to the counter to pour a cup of bean juice into my comically oversized mug.
"What time did you go to sleep?" Dad sounded parental.
"What time did you get home?" I turned the tables on him, as I sat across from Cory.
"Touche," Dad chuckled. He knew that I had a pretty good idea of what he and my Mum were up to the night before.
"Don't worry, Mr. G," Cory chimed. "I got him in bed at a decent time."
"Is that why I heard video game noises at 2am?" Dad raised an eyebrow.
"Background noise," Cory retorted. "An ambiance had to be created."
"You're a bad liar when you're sleep deprived," Dad shook his head. I continued drinking my coffee, watching them. "I assume you boys stayed out of trouble?" We both nodded. "The beer hasn't been touched. Didn't see any evidence of weed. No condoms lying around. I'm proud of you boys."
"Ya know," I spoke up. "I'm glad you set the bar so low. It's only up from here." They both laughed, as a notification came to my phone.
KAL: GOOD MORNING! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU LATER xx ISH: GOOD MORNING! ME TOO! xx KAL: DON'T EAT BREAKFAST IF YOU HAVENT! FIGURED WE COULD GET BRUNCH BEFORE COMICS. WOULD THAT BE OKAY? ISH" SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN. SEE YOU SOON xx
My smiling and blushing must've been obvious, because my Dad and Cory were giving me knowing looks when I put my phone down. Cory's smirk and raised eyebrow were an indication that he'd see right through my bullshit if I tried to lie or play it off. Dad seemed inquisitive, as though he was wanting to know what was going on in his son's life.
"What time is the date?" Cory kept his smirk.
"What date?" Dad perked up.
"I hate you," I glared at Cory before turning to Dad. "I'm going for brunch with Kal, then we're going to the comic shop."
"Who's Kal? Does he go to your school?
"He's Ravi's cousin!" Cory inserted.
"OH?!" Dad seemed... worried? "Are you sure this is a good idea? Given how things ended with Ravi?"
"Not at all," I answered honestly. "But you miss every shot that you don't take." I gulped the last of my coffee.
"Spoken like a true whore," Cory quipped.
"Well, the apple doesn't fall far, does it?" I loved how open my relationship with my Dad was. "Just be sure to call me at the first sign of trouble. Understood?"
"Thanks Dad," I stood to give him a kiss on the cheek, before rushing upstairs to get ready.
After showering and getting dressed in a long sleeve tee, cutoffs, and high tops, I double checked myself in the mirror before grabbing a plaid shirt to tie around my waist. I'd stopped wearing underwear during 11th grade, and simply hoped that my going commando wasn't too noticeable for a first date.
"Looking like a slut!" Cory laughed as I walked down the stairs. He and my Mum were sitting on the couch watching a romcom.
"At least I'm getting laid," I stuck out my tongue.
"Knock it off you two," Mum spoke up, cigarette in hand. "Cory will eventually find a girl."
"What makes you think I haven't?" He looked at her.
"Because, that'd require you to leave my house," she shot at him, causing me to laugh at Cory's speechless reaction.
I felt my phone vibrate in my hand. KAL: SHOULD I RING THE BELL? ISH: HELL NO! lol I'LL BE RIGHT OUT. I looked out the living room window to see his Mum's car sitting in the driveway.
"A real gentleman would come to the door," Cory spoke.
"I'm not tryna have him deal with your bitch ass," I responded, as I walked towards Mum to give her a kiss on the cheek. "I'll text if I'm going to be late."
"Love you dear!" Mum smiled. "Have fun."
"Wear a condom!" Cory yelled as I walked towards the front door. "No teen pregnancies!"
"So, where ya takin' me?" I asked Kal as I buckled my seatbelt.
"I figured a small diner downtown," I felt his eyes looking me up and down. "GIves us a chance to talk."
"I'm picking the music," was my only response.
"Sure thing, beautiful," he handed me his phone, so that I could play some punk pop over the car speaker.
The ride to the diner was very chill. We sang along to some songs, laughed at a couple of billboards, and watched as the suburban streets led into the busy downtown area. When we reached our destination, he parallel parked with ease. Which impressed me, because at the time I couldn't parallel park if my life depended on it. The diner was definitely small, but was busy enough to make it seem even smaller. There couldn't have been more than 12 tables, and at least 10 of them were occupied with patrons. The hostess instantly recognized Kal, and immediately sat us by the front window, lightly patting his shoulder while making a joke that I didn't pay attention to because I was halfway paying attention to the people walking past the window.
"She one of your victims?" I raised one of my eyebrows in a flirtatious manner.
"I'm sure she wishes," he huffed. "But nah, we're just friends. Met last year in a maths course."
"Pays to be friends with the staff," I quoted my mother.
"Exactly," he responded. "BEsides, my type definitely isn't a white girl."
"Oh? Then what is?"
"A hot dude, with locs, full lips, and a slim body." He winked at me. I felt my hole clench.
"I may know a person who fits that description." I retorted, biting my bottom lip.
"So, aside from me, what do you wanna eat?" He referred to the menu.
"Probably just an omelet and hash browns," I looked at the typical breakfast options. "What about you?"
"I usually just get a short stack and sausage."
"I bet you love sausage," I stuck out my tongue, to which he chuckled in response.
The waiter came to take our order while filling our water glasses. He seemed friendly with Kal as well. They joked about a mutual professor before we went to place our order.
"Is this your usual diner?" I asked him.
"Yeah," he looked down, kinda nervous. "I wanted to go somewhere I knew we wouldn't get stares."
"I can understand that," I responded knowing that the chemistry between a Brown dude and a Black guy being very noticeable wasn't always a good thing. We had to take homophobia AND racism into account.
"Most of the staff goes to the university, so there's a lot of overlap with mutual friends. And they've yet to kick me out when I'm studying for hours at a table."
"Can't study at home?" I asked, remembering that he lived at his Mum's apartment.
"Not since my cousins moved in. Those bastards are loud as fuck."
"How many of you are there?"
"There's my two cousins, me, and my Mum when she's in town. Zero privacy."
"That's gotta suck," even though Cory was always at my house, he still knew when to give me some kind of privacy.
"And not in the good way," he joked.
"Do you have any siblings?" This was the part where we're actually getting to know each other.
"Not unless you count my cousins," he responded. "Ravi and I always lived together until last year when we lived in different dorms. Closest thing I've had to a brother."
He mentioned his name! Sure, I understood that he was just making conversation. I knew that they were related. But, I didn't think he'd say his name before we even ate. Nor did I know they were that close. Did he know what happened between us? Was this "date" a setup to get me to speak to him again? Why did I even let myself get wrapped up in this?
Thankfully the waiter brought out our food in a pretty fast turnaround. We ate in silence as I savored the flavors of my omelet. Every once in a while we'd look at each other, making eye contact; before I'd turn my head to look out the window. People watching was a great way to distract me for the time being.
"So you gonna tell me what happened?" Kal asked after he'd finished eating his last sausage link.
"I thought Muslims weren't allowed to eat pork?" I asked him, having finished my food.
"It's vegan, not pork," he said, matter of factly. "Now answer the question. What happened with you and Ravi?"
"You're the one that asked me out," I started. "I figured you already knew before doing so."
"I asked you out because I think you're cute," he stated. "I wanted to see if there's more to you than what's on the surface. But, I also know that you dated my cousin, and he's never told me why you broke up. Just said that you moved on. So, I decided to give it a try."
"I moved on?" I was hoping that he was mistaken.
"That's what he said," he raised his hands and shrugged.
"That's funny. Considering that didn't happen until after he made sure to treat me like shit the whole time we were `together'." I used air quotes.
The waiter came back to our table to give us the bill and clear away the plates. Without even looking at the tab, Kal placed enough for both meals and a tip at the table before suggesting that we head out. I agreed and followed out of the door, onto the sidewalk. The late spring heat instantly hit us as we walked towards one of the parks, after he paid the meter.
"When you say he treated you like shit -" Kal started to ask me.
"I've never felt worse in my life. Still recovering from it, day by day." I cut him off.
"What happened?" He looked at me with concern.
"I don't know if I should tell you. He's your cousin."
"And you're on a date with me. So we've already crossed some weird lines."
"Yeah, but -"
"But what?" He stopped at a street corner, looking me dead in the eyes. I thought of how to approach this, because there was no easy way to tell him. I still haven't figured out how to tell anyone who didn't already know. Once I did, I wouldn't be able to take back the information he'd learn about his cousin. Or about me.
"I'll tell you, under two conditions," the crosswalk light changed to "go". I couldn't look him in the eyes, as we walked through the entrance of the park. "One, no interrupting with questions. You'll get as much information as I can remember. Past that, it's outta my hands."
"Fair enough. I'm a good listener," I could feel him smirk. "What's the other one?"
"You can't let him know that I told you," I stated clearly as we sat on a bench.
"Is it that bad?"
