Chapter 7
"You look a lot better than you did this morning" I said, looking at Peter the colour returning to his face. "You just missed Mum" he replied, I walked over and kissed his forehead. "I don't think she would mind, we have seen each other every day for the past week" I replied.
"How are you Marty, you look somewhat drained" Peter asked me. "Tired Pete just tired, it's been a long week" I replied still sore from my ordeal. "So your Dad, what has happened to him" he asked and I forgive him the slip.
"He is in custody, he goes in front of the magistrate today, the detective in charge said he would keep me up to date, they are strongly opposing bail" I responded. "I should fucking think so" Peter spat out.
"Pete I have been told something by my Mums solicitor today" I started, "Billy Lake did not own the clubs, or the house, they belonged to Mum" I informed him. "So what does that mean?" he asked. "I own them, they belong to me" I replied, "Fuck really, and what are you going to do with two night clubs" he asked. "Sell them, I want nothing to do with them" I added.
"Wow my boyfriend is a rich fucker" He laughed out. "I like it when you say that" I replied, "What rich fucker" he sniggered, "No dumbass, boyfriend" I replied and leant over and kissed his lips. "I love you Marty" he whispered. "Yeah I guessed that, and Peter I love you, I know I have been sort of distant on that score, but yeah I love you" I replied , and kissed him again.
"I have to talk to a friend of Mum's, the Solicitor gave me a letter from her, and she said I would get some answers from him, he lives in the North east somewhere, I have a number for him, but I don't want to disrupt someone else's life" I said to Peter. "Marty, babe, you won't find answers to questions you don't know, but if you want to talk to someone who was a good friend of your Mum, call him, what do you have to lose" Peter replied stroking my arm.
"Call him" he added.
I walked over and sat in a chair while Peter lay down to rest. I opened the letter given to me by James, and opened my mobile phone and dialled the number, the phone rang for a few seconds when a teenage voice answered.
"Hello stokes home" he informed me.
"Ermm sorry, could I speak to Terrence please" I asked
"Speaking" he replied.
"Ohh Terrence senior then" I responded.
"Okay just a second" he replied, I heard him shout down the line for his dad to pick up, a few seconds passed when an older voice began to talk.
"Hello Terry Stokes" he started.
"Yeah hello Mr Stokes, this is Martin Lake" I started.
"Oh my god, Martin I have dreamt of this day, how is Sally" he asked, and the question stunned me, how could a good friend of mum's not know she had died.
"Oh sorry Mr Stokes" he cut me off, "Please call me Terry" he told me. "Okay Terry, sorry but mum died a long time ago, I thought you would have known
"NOooooo!!"he moaned out, "How, how did she die Martin" he asked with some emotion in his voice. "She died sixteen years ago, she had cancer" I informed him, I could hear crying on the line. "Terry are you okay" I asked. "Sorry Martin, it's just I loved your mother very much, I missed her when I moved away" he informed me. "Why did you move?" I asked.
"Billy Lake, he didn't like me, I was dating her when he first came on the scene, she liked him, but he didn't like me, when he saw me as an obstacle he had me beaten up, and was told to move away or next time it wouldn't end so well, so I left" he sobbed out.
"that was about twenty, yeah twenty years ago or just over" he added. "I contacted her and gave me her permission to call her, I gave her my number if she needed me for anything, I never told her about Billy, I fucking should have, but she was stuck down there" he added. "I was gone for a few months when she called me and said she was pregnant, I thought you might have been mine, but she assured me it was that fuckers" he spat out, "Sorry Martin I don't mean to speak ill of your dad, but there is no love lost you understand" he added.
"Terry feel free, he tried to have me killed" I replied. "He fucking what" he yelled, and I filled him in on what had transpired over the past couple of weeks.
"So this Peter, he okay" he asked. "Yes Terry he will be" I replied. "Martin is it okay if I come and visit, I think we have a lot to talk about" he asked.
"Yes I would like to meet you too Terry, and for you to meet Peter" I replied.
"Would Tomorrow be to early?" he asked. "No please, that would be great, I should have the house back later today, according to the police" I added
"Your grandparents old place yeah" he replied.
"Yeah Wimpole Street number 22" I replied, "Yeah I know it"
"Okay tomorrow then" I responded.
"Yeah tomorrow" and the phone line went dead.
I sat for a couple of hours watching Peter sleep, his light snoring was music, he soothed me until I myself drifted off.
I was startled awake by Peter's mother returning. "Hey Martin I didn't mean to disturb you" she said, "No it's fine, is he still sleeping?" I asked.
"Like a baby" she replied,
"Martin the police left a message" she started
"Yeah what"
"I think you better contact them Dear" she replied. She handed me a card with a number on it for a detective John Hunter, a different one than I had been dealing with.
I opened my phone and dialled the number.
"John Hunter C-I-D" he replied
"Yes detective, this is Martin Lake" I responded. "Oh Mr Lake, okay just a sec...hmmmm, okay here it is, yes, okay Martin Lake, yes" he asked, "Yeah" I replied, "Okay I was asked to relay this to you from a fellow detective, Billy lake is on remand, and he is not local, he has been transferred, to a maximum security facility in London, his bail denied and he will reappear in four weeks' time" he informed me.
"Thank you for letting me know" I replied. "No problem" and he hung up.
"Everything okay" Pete's mum asked, "Yeah, Billy has been sent on remand somewhere in London" I replied. "Good Riddance" she spat out, and I couldn't blame her for the hate, Billy had not just ruined Peter's and my life, but hers also, twice in her case.
"An old friend of mums is coming to see me tomorrow" I informed her, "Oh Yeah who, do I know them" she asked, "No I don't think so, he moved away before I was born" I replied.
"Can you tell Pete I will be over Tomorrow, I need to sort things out at home, god knows what state the police have left it in" I said standing up and giving her a light hug, "Sure, I will as soon as he wakes up" she replied and I watched for a few seconds as my future slept soundly.
I headed off home not knowing what condition it would be in, I had company coming over tomorrow and I had to get it cleaned and sorted, just as mum would have it, I hoped Billy would go away for a very long time, the drugs business he was involved in, the testimony of the undercover officer would go a long way to convict the bastard.
I pulled into the drive way, and opened the door, the police tape had been removed, the place was a mess but manageable the dishes had been washed already and the laundry was piling up, but since most of if not all was his, the rubbish bin beckoned.
A couple of hours hard work and the house was clean, the cupboard was empty, as he lived on takeaways and crap from the corner grocery store. I would do a shop tomorrow; I still have a decent savings account he never knew about.
I went to bed just after eleven and fell into a deep sleep; I had the best sleep probably due to exhaustion and dreams of Peter and I was prevalent throughout the night, I woke just after eight with a solid hard-on, Peter definitely the cause.
I climbed into the shower, and took care of the problem, I washed the previous day off me, looking forward to seeing Peter, we had plans to make, college to get through, I was twenty in a few weeks, and wanted to start my education again but without distractions, and a move out of Sheffield was a must. Money not being an obstacle would help along way, so the sale of the clubs would be important, the house I will keep, it was my Grandparents and my Mother's home, so yeah I will keep a hold of it. That is if he goes down for an extended period.
I collected some items for Peter at the store, and headed back to the hospital, I walked in and he was sitting up reading a book.
"Hey you" I said walking in, "Hey yourself" he responded, "You look rested" he added, "As do you" I said kissing him soft on the lips, "The doctors think I should be able to go home in a couple of days" he informed me. "Just have to see some shrink first" he added. "You do as you are told, I want the boy back that I fell in love with okay" I informed him.
"I will, I just need to get out of here" he added, in a sad pathetic like tone, and I laughed at his pouting lips. And as we were laughing and joking my Mobile went off.
"Hello" I said
"Hello, Martin it's Terry, I am at the house but you are not I take it?" he asked. "Sorry Terry I wasn't expecting you until much later on" I replied.
"Oh early riser so headed off a bit early, where are you?" he asked, "City hospital, you know where it is" I asked, "It's new to me, give me the post code and I will sat nav it" he replied
And I gave him all the information he needed and the room number where he could find us, I went for a coffee and got one for Peter also, it tasted like wet cardboard with the same aftertaste and continued our conversation on what we will do when he is discharged and as we talked I heard a knock at the door and then received a shock of all shocks, as a man stood in the doorway and Christ he was an older image of me.
"Terry?" I asked and he stood there stunned as much as I was, there is no doubt in my mind what I was looking at, my Mum assured him that she was pregnant with Billy's child, but that was obviously a lie. Because standing in front of me now was my dad.
"Terry" I repeated
"She lied to me, I cannot believe Sally would lie to me" he replied and began crying, the resemblance to the man standing in front of me was undeniable, no DNA test required.
"Martin I have missed out on so much, I don't even know where to start" he said still startled to see a younger version of himself. "Terry she never even hinted, I mean I never heard your name mentioned ever, the first time I knew you existed was when I spoke to James Lloyd" I replied. "Sorry...Sorry...Martin I am so sorry, if I knew I ...I would have had you in my life...I swear on my Sons life...oh! ...wow...I have two Sons...Leo...you will like him...and Martin he is sixteen and perhaps you have more in common than you would think...he told me last year he was Gay, so perhaps you could talk to him" Terry, my Dad said.
"I would love to meet your Family...I mean if it is okay with you?" I replied.
"Leo is all I have, his Mum ran off with the milkman...believe it or not, a bit cliché but true" he responded. "And Leo is downstairs in the car" he added
"A lot to take in I just found out Billy `fucking' Lake is not my dad...good news, and I have a normal none violent...or at least I hope so anyway, dad and younger brother...still good news"
"I would like to meet him" I replied, I kissed Peter and told him I would see him in a couple of hours and headed down to meet my half-brother and he's gay to boot, times are definitely getting interesting.
