A miserable morning greeted me as I looked out at the backyard while waiting for the kettle to boil; drizzly rain had arrived overnight making everything grey and uninviting. Ted was in front of the cartoon channel wrapped in his rug and Con was still sleeping. I made some toast and popped the plate in front of my baby, he didn't make a move to pick it up so I put a wedge into his hand and he slowly moved it to his mouth, idly licking the peanut butter off.
I sat at the table and watched the rain again, I hate this kind of weather, it dampens everyone's spirits. Eventually Conner came out scratching his bum while looking for coffee, he kissed me then Ted who was still tackling his first piece of toast.
"What's on today baby?" he asked.
"I'm meeting Di for lunch at Nan's then I am going to attempt lamb shanks for dinner," I said with a smile.
"Let John cook them babe," he suggested and gave me a wary look.
"No, I want to have a go, I've still got that slow cooker in the linen press, I haven't used it yet. I've got to get at least one meal out of it and they sound easy to cook."
"Okay have it your way, I'll look forward to it, "he smiled; I could feel him laughing to himself.
"Ted come on, get ready for school, we haven't much time left baby." I put some sandwiches into his lunch box beside the small banana and apple and noticed a small Kit Kat had made it's way in too. The longhaired lunchbox bandit strikes again, I left it there, although, I'm not a fan of sending my kid to school with chocolates.
Ted, as usual didn't move so I flicked the TV off.
"Won't be long daddy," he yelled as he ran into his bedroom to put his shirt and shorts on.
"Put a jacket in your backpack, it might get cold today."
"Yes daddy," I heard before I went out the back to see if it was already cold, a light pullover will do for him today.
"I had better get him to put his jumper on Con, it's a little chilly outside." I went up to Ted's bedroom and organized him.
When that was done I placed his lunchbox in his bag then asked Con if he was coming for the ride, he nodded yes, then went to put a top on. Shame about that because even though it was drizzly outside it was warm in the house and I kinda liked the view before he covered it.
We belted Ted up and I carefully drove off while checking we were being followed, we had Grant today, good. Turning the corner at the lights at Chapel Street I didn't see the car that screamed across the intersection but I felt its full force. It pushed our car sideways into the gutter, flipping us almost onto our side, with its nose buried under our back wheel. Ted started screaming. 'My God, Ted!' I screamed in a panic then unbuckled my belt and almost fell onto Con, who was wide eyed and seemed to be in shock.
"Help my boy, get my boy," I yelled.
I could hear talking and the back door groan.
"On my mark, one, two, three," I heard Grant yell.
Teddy was screaming for us; he was lying on his side and trying to get his belt off.
"Teddy, calm down, Uncle Grant will get you out in a minute."
"Daddy, daddy, get me out daddy."
Crunch, the sound of buckled metal came from behind and Grant's face appeared, he reached in and unlocked Ted's belt, gently holding his body in his big hands.
"Its okay captain, Uncle Grant is here, come on." He didn't seem to be hurt, only in shock.
"Grant, get me out of here so I can check him out."
"How's Conner?"
"I don't know, he looks fine but he's not talking, did you call the ambulance?"
"Yes, I can hear them coming."
I looked at my Conner, his face was white, I went to check him out and I heard a faint,
"Don't."
"Con I have to check you, are you in pain?"
"Not yet, but don't touch me."
"Why? Talk to me, fuck you."
"I heard a snap, I think my neck is broken." Tears dribbled down his face.
"I'm sorry Brent, so very sorry."My body went stone cold.
"Don't you ever say that to me Conner Richards, never. Grant, how far away is that ambulance?"
"They just pulled up with the firetruck, how are you?"
"I think I'm good but Con is not, we have to get him out fast, they will need a neck brace."
Teddy was crying still, he wouldn't calm down. I felt Grant's big arms grab me around the chest and he hauled me out through the driver's side window, which didn't exist anymore. I immediately took Ted into my arms and held him tightly. I smelt petrol and looked at the firemen.
"Petrol, I smell petrol, please, Conner is still in there," I yelled as I looked around at the twisted metal. A man was still in the other car with blood streaming from his head wound.
The firemen reacted immediately and started foaming the cars. I heard a window smash, they needed to get to Con, and the ambos dove onto him as soon as the all clear was heard. They put a collar on his neck but there was nothing I could do, except pray. I flipped my phone to ring Ray but John gently took it off me; I didn't see them arrive, thank you Grant.
They took Ted from me and started to distract him from watching Con being moved, very gently out of the car. I still held Ted's hand while I pulled a tissue out to wipe the flood of tears away from his face and took my hoodie off, to put it over his shoulders, to keep him from shivering. Gently they placed Con on a gurney and were asking him many questions as they took his shoes off and touched his feet, he flinched.
"My God, thank you, thank you," I prayed.
It was a good sign followed by a second good sign; he slightly moved his toes and fingers. After settling Con, they started on Ted who was terrified of them but they checked him out before he could scream any more, he was trying to get out of Ray's clutches.
"Daddy, daddy."
I took Ted and hugged him again as the ambos checked me over.
"Apart from some scrapes I'm okay fellas, look after Conner, we will follow you."
"Our car is over there Brent," John said.
"Grant can you deal with this?" I looked toward our now very broken car. The other driver was still being attended to but I didn't think he was badly injured. Maybe the fact he was drunk helped him survive with just a scraped scalp.
"Sure Brent, we've got it covered, see you there."
We drove very carefully towards the hospital, Ted had settled a little and I was talking to him quietly and calmly saying it was an accident, he wasn't hurt and he gets to stay home from school for the day. Dad Conner is going to be all right and now we have to go see a doctor so he can check us out just to see if everything is working properly. He seemed to go with it.
I couldn't relax as the adrenalin was still running through my body. I was holding my son and I so wanted to hold my beautiful husband. Having a little idea how the accident happened, I know I had the green light and I know I was being careful; I always am, especially, with my two most cherished people in the car with me.
They wheeled Con into emergency and he was immediately taken into the back rooms. Ray started filling out the admittance papers and got me to sign them, then a smiling nurse showed us into a cubical, she knows her job, especially when it comes to frightened little kids.
"Check my son first, I'm okay, I'm a nurse but I might have missed something with him."
"I doubt that, Mr. Walsh, but hey little man can I take your school shirt off and just check if everything is okay so you can play footy tomorrow?"
"Eh?" Ted's eyes bulged.
She looked at me and winked.
"What little boy doesn't like playing footy," she whispered as I got his shirt and shorts off. He looked unscathed to me but internal damage can be difficult to detect.
"He's fine; now for daddy, take your shirt off please." I started to protest but did what she asked.
You couldn't see much of it but the redness was forming down my right side. I never felt it but I did take the brunt of the impact. She held my right arm and twisted it every which way then pressed gently on my ribs, they hurt but not badly. I had been in more pain after my kidnapping and on a scale of one to ten this was a minus five. She strapped my body after diagnosing bruised ribs; thank God they're not broken.
I dressed and got Ted settled onto my left hip, which for some reason decided to start throbbing. I thanked her and asked about Conner but she left saying she won't be a moment. I kissed my boy's head and face, thank god he was okay. I would never forgive myself if he had been hurt badly; I wasn't even going that fast.
"He's having more tests, the X-rays are clear, no breaks, a bit of bruising, his spine is normal," she explained.
"Thank God, did you hear that Ted, dad is going to be all right?"
"Can I see him daddy?"
"Soon baby, soon."
"Your daddy is going to be alright Teddy, nurse Sandra will see to it."
We thanked her and went to find Ray and John; Grant had turned up and confirmed the other driver was drunk. He had been at an all night club, in Chapel Street, and ran the red light. The car is a write off, I wondered how Con would take that piece of news...not well I assume.
Ray hugged Ted and I, he had tears in his eyes but they were happy ones, no damage and he said; "Con is asking to see me and Ted. Could we possibly take time out to go calm him down," he grinned? I didn't need to be asked twice. He led us to where they had settled him.
His face beamed when he saw me and looked Ted over as if expecting to see him in a cast or bandages. I kissed him as I let Ted down onto the bed to crawl up so Con could hold him.
"I'm sorry I scared you baby. I heard a snap in my head but there's nothing but slight bruising. I told them I was going home with you and you are a nurse so they agreed, a few pain killers and I should be fine."
I flopped into the chair feeling a bit exhausted as Ted had his arm under Con's neck and was kissing him better. He had tears in his eyes, but Con wiped them away with his thumb.
"Well captain, you will be missing training today, so tomorrow we do two hours to make up for your slackness," Con smiled.
"No daddy I stay home with you and make you better." He giggled as Con tickled him.
"That would be so cool captain but I'm afraid your men need you more, you have to suck it up."
"Suppose so dad." He yawned.
"When did they say you could leave Con?"
"John is signing me out now, so just as soon as that's done, we can all go home to have a much needed nap; I think." He stroked my cheek, I kissed his hand, I so wanted to get into that bed and hold him.
We left the hospital feeling a little better and Ray drove us home. John had the coffee on as soon as we sat at the table.
"I'll put your shanks on Brent, they will be ready about six thirty." I thanked him.
"I told you to get John to cook them baby," Conner chuckled as I glared at him.
We talked quietly but Ted still held onto Con's neck. I got a biscuit into him then tried to tempt him with ice cream and a banana but he shook his head, indicating a flat out no.
"Conner the car is a write off, I'm sorry to say," Grant said.
"I thought it might have been, I guess nothing lasts forever," Con said melancholically like. I looked him in the eye and answered quietly,
"Love lasts forever Con, love. The car is a machine, a very important one but a machine. It doesn't have a heart and it can't love."
I kissed him on the lips, he snuggled his head into my neck and John took a sneaky photo of us three.
I held Con's hand after the boys left; he still had Ted, who had dropped off to sleep. We were all tired; adrenalin will do that sometimes, so we walked up to the bedroom and undressed Ted then placed him under the blankets. Then we stripped to our underwear and crawled in beside him. Con leaned over and kissed me deeply and said,
"Sweet dreams baby." I replied the same and we drifted off into the land of nod. It was Benny who woke us. We had slept the day away but he wanted dinner even though it was only four thirty. I slipped out of bed and rubbed my face. My brain was reliving Ted's screams and Con's silence, everything had happened so fast. My brain was still trying to process it...now for coffee; that fixes everything. Ted jumped out after me and was running down the passage to feed Ben and was putting the dried food in his bowl when John arrived.
"Good sleep?"
"The best."
"I'll just turn these shanks and leave you to it."
"There's no need John, I just did them, have a coffee with me, I think Conner is finding it hard to move," I said with a giggle.
John took the lid off the cooker and checked that I had turned the shanks the correct way, umm.
Of course his entry was well timed, he wasn't scratching his ass or balls this time, he was picking his nose.
"Get a tissue Con, child in the room." I nodded towards Ted who had claimed his royal throne in front of the TV. Benny raced in a little after and jumped on him so they played for awhile until Ben decided to go back out to do another wee.
"Brent, you need a car so for the moment I will lend you mine, Ray and I don't need two cars. Now, the insurance will only pay out the market value which I am afraid is only five hundred dollars, scrap price, and I think you should look for a new car. For now you can use mine for as long as you like." He was being very gentle and soft spoken then handed me his keys.
"John, where can I buy a new BMW with Burgundy paintwork?" I asked.
"There's a dealership in South Yarra, Brent, and we can get a good deal through Go Ship. If you want I can get Helen and Rob to order one for you but use mine for now, there's no big hurry."
"Sure John but only for a few days, we need a new car. They are safer than the old ones. My family was nearly badly injured today and I need a safer car to run my boys around in. Con, I'm sorry but it's got to be done, we can't risk Ted's health again."
"I know baby, thank you," he answered, he was still in a melancholy mood.
"Time moves on Con, people leave, people arrive, you were the most precious thing in Beth's life and she kept you completely safe. I need to keep you safe now, and our son, so if I sound a bit matter of fact, then so be it. We need a new, safer car. I need to move on and you and our son need to come with me." His glistening eyes had arrived and he grabbed me in an almighty, urgent embrace.
"It's just a machine Brent, just a car; we can get a new one for me, you and our son. I have some great memories in that car, the best was when you drove it for the first time, the look on your face was priceless." Con laughed. I remembered that day like it was yesterday, I guess it was kinda funny.
Dinner was superb, I had done a good job, well okay, John did a good job and he and Ray shared our meal. We had heaps of gravy and mashed potatoes and Ted loved the last two but the meat on the bone sort of turned him off.
Because we slept during the day it was hard to get my boys settled so I opted for Ted to jump in with us again and we put Mary Poppins into the player. Ted and Con sang along but I mostly faked my way through it, again. Ted finally drifted off so Con leant over and we made out for a bit. I rolled onto my stomach and put my arm across Ted onto Con's chest where it stayed. My nightmares were back and more than once I woke up gasping for air; I was totally knackered by the morning.
After taking a leak, I then washed my face, rubbing my left side as I went; it felt like it had a ton of weight sitting on it. All of a sudden out of nowhere I vomited, not much, but enough to get my attention as there was blood, light colored not dark, but blood just the same, fucking hell what now? I organized breakfast then sat down to have a talk to Ted to find out how he was feeling about yesterday.
"Hey baby, you feeling okay this morning?"
"Yes daddy, I was just scared for you yesterday, I sorry I cried." He looked at me.
"You feel free to cry anytime you like baby, daddy is all right, now can I ask you to do something really special and really important for me today?"
"Yes daddy."
"Will you let granddad John drive you to school this morning, dad and I have something to do today, is that okay?"
"Sure daddy, that's cool, can you promise to pick me up for practice though?"
"Of course sweetie, dad and I both will pick you up."
I walked into next door and told Ray what was going on; it could be anything but I didn't think it was very serious. He said he will get John to organize Ted and he would drive us to the hospital emergency. I thanked him and went to wake Con up, he was dozing when I got there.
"Con, can you get up soon, we have to be somewhere, there's no hurry just start moving."
"Come back to bed baby, I want you in here with me, it's so nice and warm."
I stroked his face and leant over to kiss him.
"Okay Con, you sleep some more, Ray is just taking me to the hospital," I whispered in his ear. He started to sit up but I pushed him down and added,
"I'm bleeding internally, light blood, nothing major but I need to be checked out. John is going to take Ted to school, we won't be long."
"Oh Brent what can I do?"
"Nothing, but if you want to come just shower and meet me in the family room, we have plenty of time." I smiled again rubbing at the stabbing pain in my left side.
"Okay." That worried look was on his face again.
"Just a thorough checkup Con, that's all," I reminded him.
Ted skipped out the door after saying his goodbyes to us with not a care in the world and was looking forward to telling his mates about the car crash, I somehow think he will omit the crying bit.
After talking to the triage, I was shown into a room and bloods were taken. My bruising was now starting to look angry but apart from that I felt all right. Four hours later I was given the good news I had a busted vein in my stomach, antibiotics and rest, it was probably caused by the seat belt. Con didn't speak, just held my hand as we walked out to the car and as soon as we settled into the back seat he broke. We didn't talk about it; we just held onto each other as I kissed his head whispering,"I love you," and,"I'm okay,"repeatedly in his ear.
"I'll get John to pick Ted up, you two need to rest a bit," Ray said looking at us through the rear vision mirror.
"It's okay Ray, he sort of made me promise to collect him and I believe that prick that owns his team wants him to do an hour's extra training today... bastard." I smirked at Con.
"Well he did miss training yesterday, can't let the team down Mr.Walsh," Con replied and finally smiled.
He didn't want to go to rehearsals but I insisted everything was as it should be and he had already put it off for a week even though he exercised his voice twice a day. Sometimes it sounded like he was strangling poor Benny but mostly it was just unreal to listen to.
My boys were out the front when we got back, more flowers and hugs, my ribs hurt, I rubbed my left side and it felt a little better. Davo held my hand and Phil kissed my neck while Conner felt left out. I laughed then asked about Tan and they said he was very happy and a much more relaxed boy since he and Tom had made up. I tried to lift my eyebrow but nothing happened.
"It was Tom's idea, he sat in a few times during Tan's talks with Mary and decided to forgive him. They apparently talked for ages and came to the same conclusion. They were wrong for each other as boyfriends, even though they liked one another."
"Is Shane still hanging around?"
"Yes Brent, he's smitten with Tom, would do anything for him and I think; just think, they have moved it up a notch because he's had a couple of sleepovers at Tom's and also they have a sort of spring in their steps."
"Good, I'm pleased with that, I have to catch up with them soon, Con's concert is in four weeks and I want to invite them along, you are both coming aren't you?"
"Wouldn't miss it Brent,we are so looking forward to it," Phil thanked me.
He then kissed my neck again, I felt a little embarrassed but Conner couldn't help himself, he leant over and started licking Davo's neck and moaning in the process.
"Hey get your own," Phil chided.
"Don't stop Conner, I love the way you do that," Davo moaned.
"Okay, okay, I'll stop." Phil lifted his hands up.I loved Phil's no holds barred approach to his friends; he must have had a very loving family while growing up. Some people somehow look at body contact as an offence to them nowadays; but a hug is a hug in my book, always a welcome human reaction.
"Are we going to the park?" he added.
"Yep, let's go." I took John's keys and shooed Benny out the back, throwing him a treat so he wouldn't feel left out. I should have got Phil to lick his neck too.
"Hi baby boy, how was school today, is your underwear still clean?" Con blurted out in front of his mates. Poor Ted shrunk into the background while a very stern woman tapped Con on the shoulder.
"One hundred words Mr.Richards, `I must not embarrass my son in front of his mates,' and on my desk first thing in the morning."
"But Mrs. Green, I was having some fun with my son."
"Does he look like he's having fun, Mr. Richards?"
"Well no, but he will see the funny side of it surely?"
Ted wasn't amused.
"Oh?" Poor Con said as I chuckled my way to the car.
"But Brent, she can't do that to me, I'm a rock legend."
"In her world you're not Con, just go with it and apologize to your son while you're at it." I shook my finger at him.
"I've been a naughty boy, baby, I need to be spanked," Con lowered his head but looked up with one eye.
"After you do your homework Richards and after Ted is asleep then you get your spanking."
"Are you sleepy Ted?"
"Con don't, you already tried that and he wasn't happy then either."
"Shit, sorry."
"And don't say shit."
I heard a small voice in the back seat say, "Tool."
"Teddy Richards, two minutes in the naughty corner when you get home!" I could see his eyes shut and I'm sure those fists were white.
"What's up with Conner?" Andy asked.
"Mrs. Green," was all I had to say.
"Thank God it wasn't me again," he groaned as he looked behind to check she hadn't snuck up on him.
Grant took the kids through their paces while Con, Phil and Dave went for a run. I will hold off for a few days, don't want any more mishaps.
"Are you and Sam coming to the concert?"
"Yes Brent, Sean will stay in with Bubby for the night."
"Good, it won't be a late night as it starts at six thirty, delayed telecast just in case something goes wrong, which it won't," I said confident like.
"We are so looking forward to it Brent, it's been awhile since we have seen a live concert."
"Well it's going to be a blast, did Con give you a copy of the new album?"
"No Brent, but we want to hear it live first, then we will buy it."
I sort of smirked and told Andy there was no need to buy it because Con was providing signed copies after the show in the meet and greet room, he can start on them after he does his homework.
With Con's guest list in hand a few days later; I started for Di and Marty's. Little Hope was growing, nearly crawling and Di was more relaxed than I had seen her for ages, of course she was glowing as usual fussing over Marty and me with cakes and coffee. I handed the list to Marty and he punched it into his laptop.
"Con has come up with a brilliant idea for the opening, I'm sure you will love it Brent but don't ask, it's a surprise."
"I'll tell you later Brent," Di winked, as she picked up Hope who was all gurgles and spit.
"Now what am I going to do with you on the night, are Jen and Bob going to the concert Brent?"
"Yes Di, Conner has reserved a room at the Hilton for Ray and John, they are going to babysit Ted and little Con, they could look after Hope too, you can trust them."
"Oh goody, I want to heckle Conner before he goes on stage just to put him off his game," she laughed.
"You don't mind leaving Hope with strangers?"
"Hardly strangers, Brent, uncles more like it,and she's easy to look after, change her, feed her and put her to sleep; easy."
"Cool," I said marveling in Di's change of parenting.
"And when this other little one arrives I'm sure they will get more work than they bargained for, it's a boy this time, I couldn't wait to find out the sex."
My jaw dropped and a tear dripped onto Di's white tablecloth.
"Oh my god, congratulations Di, Marty, and it's a boy for sure?"
She beamed.
"Yep, our little boy, Brenton, is about to arrive."
"No."
"Oh yes, Marty, you can pick the second name again." She tried to kiss his mouth but he was too interested in his laptop.
"Sure honey, Disney is releasing the movie on the weekend; I just got a memo from them."
"Wow, maximum exposure, Con is going to be stoked, did they use Ted's voice?"
"Yep, he has to sign up to my agency a.s.a.p. it's not big but he makes a grand for it."
"Oh my, our son, the movie star; what next?"
"Another movie, more words and a bigger contract I think Brenton," Marty added with a laugh.
"What?"
"Let me read it thoroughly and I will get back to you."
"So how far are we along?"
"Nearly two months Brent, I didn't want to announce it too early yet but I really wanted to know the sex before I did, he's coming Brent, at last her brothers are coming." She had tears in her eyes so Marty put his work aside to hug her closely. I leant over and took Hope who smiled her gummy, toothy smile at me and seemed happy. I guess she's waiting for her brothers too. We talked more about the accident and I showed them my angry bruising, which was starting to turn black, Di was very sympathetic and it had worried her.
I went to pick Con up at the Arena and he was talking to his band when I arrived. It was good to see them, they were in the middle of doing an album Con was helping with, pure rock but Con wasn't fronting it, one of the guys had a great voice so looks like they are going to star; finally.
"Did Marty tell you?"
"What Con?"
"About the movie release and Ted."He grinned.
"Yes but I hope he doesn't have to go to Hollywood, we would miss him."
"Eh?"
"He would be a magnet for those Kardashian girls Con, we may even lose him to reality TV," I chuckled.
"Did Marty tell you their other news?" I asked.
"What news?"
"A little boy is in the oven warming up." Con was all over the place with happiness.
"How long have we got before we have to pick Ted up?"
"About a half hour, Con."
"Oh, is K-mart open tonight?"
"No," I sternly said.
"But baby, I have to get some more stuff."
"There's plenty of stuff in Ted's and little Con's closets."
"But it's used, you don't think I'm going to give my new nephew used toys do you?" He put a shocked look on his face.
"No of course not, we can go on the weekend but we still have to get a car."
"Sure, I believe Helen is on to it baby, she will email out the color chart, Ted can pick from that okay?"
"Just make sure it's a reliable, safe car, that's all."
"Sure baby, leave it to your daddy." He smiled.
"Daddy?"
"Yes baby, daddy will get you organized." He leered at me; my cock stirred.
