Chapter 5

I came back to my room Monday evening to find that Ethan was already there.

"Hey" I said throwing my book bag down.

"Hey" he replied flipping through a textbook.

For a while we both just sat on our beds silently. Each of us doing our own thing. My phone went off because I got a text message. It was from Bryan asking to hang out after class tomorrow. I've blown him off a lot and I figured if we never talk then he'll never leave me alone. I say sure.

"Is that Greyson?" Ethan asked, still going through his textbook.

"No it's...wait, how you do you know about Greyson?" I asked

"Blair and Paige filled me in on this guy." he replied closing his book and sitting up. "So you're seeing the star quarterback, huh?"

"No I'm not 'seeing' Greyson." I replied with air quotes "Just like I told Blair, he's not interested in me at all."

"Well from what Blair and Paige told me, you two seem to play for the same team." Ethan responded

I just rolled my eyes.

"Ok, Kendall thats fine. Don't believe me. But when you and this Greyson guy get together, I get a free pass at a big fat 'I told you so' moment." Ethan said.

The rest of the night was pretty uneventful and that topic wasn't brought back up.

Bryan and I decided to talk at his dorm. He suggested it because his roommate would be gone until Wednesday afternoon. I agreed because I felt like a conversation like this should be private. So after class I walked to Bryan's building. I made a pit stop in the lobby bathroom. One should always look amazing when talking to your ex who regrets giving you up.

I knocked on Bryan's door.

"Kendall, wow..."Bryan said looking me up and down "you look...um please come in"

I sat in his desk chair and Bryan pulled his roommate's over. I don't know why but I was feeling nervous, a bunch of butterflies were flying in my stomach. For a few seconds, Bryan and I just looked at each other.

"You're looking good" Bryan said breaking the silence. I could feel myself blush.

"So do you." I smiled.

"Tennis keeps me busy."

"How is that going?" I ask

"We've only had a couple practices so far but it's going good."

"So is tennis the only reason you decided to come to Claybourne?"

"Yes and no." Bryan replied. "I originally applied here because you were going here. But then I got accepted to UCLA with their scholarship offer so I forgot that I even applied here. Well in July, Claybourne's tennis coach called me and asked if I would consider their deal since I hadn't officially signed with UCLA. They offered my the full ride which I couldn't say no to. It was a bonus that you were going here because I really missed you and wished I could go back and undo everything."

"You told me the reasoning behind it was you didn't want to put me through a long distance relationship. Is that true or did you want to sleep with other guys?"

"It was partially true. The real reason was it being long distance but it was me who didn't think I could handle it." he replied "Long distance relationships seem so grown up and a big step. It scared me. So I thought it would be easier to be so far away and know you hate me rather than us missing each other."

Bryan reached out and grabbed my hands.

"I still love you Kendall. Did you know that I stayed away from all the parties our friends had this summer so I wouldn't see you? I don't think I could have handled seeing you and knowing you were over me."

"I'm not going to lie and say it didn't hurt when you broke up with me. You broke my heart, Bryan." I said quietly "I didn't go to any of those parties either because seeing you having fun without me. It took a lot but I thought I was close to moving on. Then I see you here and you kiss me at that party and it brings everything back."

"I honestly was surprised when you walked into that class. Then some guys on the team brought me to that party. I drank a lot and needed to lie down. That's when you walked in. I was sad because you had been avoiding me and I felt bad for ending something good."

"We were pretty good." I chuckled.

"Remember that night at Leslie's party, you were on the hammock and I was on the ground next to you and somehow you managed to flip yourself over? First your drink spilled all over me and then you landed on top of me." Bryan laughed

"You smelled like blue raspberry for the rest of the night! But that was our first kiss."

"I'd been wanting to kiss you for a while."

"I was glad you finally did it." I replied with a smile.

"I miss this" Bryan said. "I miss us"

What was I doing? I came here to hear Bryan out and then leave. Hearing that he missed me made me smile on the inside and truth be told, I had been missing him too. I didn't think I'd admit it.

"Me too" I whispered.

"So we're both here at Claybourne and we miss each other. Where does that leave us?"

"I don't know" I sighed "I need to think about it."

Bryan pulled me into him and started kissing me. I sunk into him. He was so familiar, it felt nice. Bryan had always been an amazing kisser. His tongue parted my lips and we were making out. After a few seconds, I pulled away. We just looked into each other's eyes for a little bit.

"Don't forget to think about that." Bryan said.

I gathered myself, stood up and walked out the door. What had I just done?
