A Voice from The Past Chapter 15
After a wonderful night of making love, knowing that they were going to be married, Jason began to stir. Though the night, they had changed position: Tony was now spooned behind Jason, with a protective arm lying across his stomach. The door bell began to ring, as if someone were trying to break it.
"Who the hell is that at this time of the morning?" Jason said, the ringing now waking up Tony.
"I don't know? If they keep that up, they will break the bell," Tony said.
Both got out of the bed, grabbing their boxers, then each putting on a robe. Whoever was at the door really wanted their attention - ringing the bell and knocking on the door at the same time.
"Alright," Jason hollered, coming down the stairs, with Tony following him.
Jason got to the door, just as the knocking started again. "Coming! Will you stop beating on the door?" Jason said, opening the door.
"Jason!" Thank God you're here," Stephanie said, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Stephanie! What are you doing here, Sis? How did you even know that I was here?" Jason asked.
"Oh, Jason, something has happened!" Stephanie said.
"Sis, come in here and calm down and tell me what has happened?" Jason said, taking her into the living room.
"Oh, Jason," Stephanie said, before breaking down, wrapping an arm around him.
"Come on, Steph, calm down and tell me what's going on," Jason said.
"D-dad has had a heart attack; they don't know if he will make it; mom sent me to get you. She wants you to come see him."
"No! He doesn't want to see me. I'm the last person he wants to see, and I don't believe that Mom wants me there, either," Jason said.
"Jason, please; mom wants you there. I think she didn't want to cross dad, so that's why she went along with dad kicking you out of the house. Mom loves you, and wants to see you. Please come with me to see dad," Stephanie said.
"No! Do you realize how long it's been since I have talked to either of them? When I told them I was gay, and they kicked me out of the house, they said they never wanted to see me again," Jason said.
"Jason, think about this," Tony said.
"Who are you?" Stephanie asked, looking between Tony and Jason, dressed only in robes.
"Stephanie, this is Tony, my boyf....I mean my fiancé. We are getting married in a couple of months," Jason said.
"Nice to meet you, Stephanie," Tony said, holding out his hand. Stephanie just looked at him.
"Don't do this, Sis. You come here begging me to come see dad, and you are going to treat Tony this way. Get out!" Jason said, while standing and pointing towards the door.
"Jason, don't do this; listen to her," Tony said
"No, Tony. They tell me to leave, because they find out that I'm gay, and my father said, `he didn't have a son'. So I will not go see him," Jason said, with tears in his eyes.
"Stephanie, let me talk to Jason, while we get dressed. Help yourself to anything in the kitchen," Tony said, taking Jason by the hand, and leading him upstairs.
As they get to the top of the stairs, Tony took Jason into the bedroom, closing the door and locking it.
"I'm not going to see him, no matter what you say," Jason said, taking off his robe, looking for some clothes to wear.
"Jason, listen to me. I can understand you not wanting to see him, but can you honestly say that if he dies you won't regret not going to see him?" Tony said, hugging him.
"Tony, what if I go see him, and he tells me to get out. I can't handle that again," Jason said.
"I know, baby, but I'll be there with you. I just don't want you to regret it if you don't go see him. If he doesn't want to see you, then we will leave, and I won't ever again ask you to see him. Now let's get dressed; your sister is waiting," Tony said.
Stephanie looked up as they were coming down the stairs.
"So, what do you say big brother; you going to see dad?" Stephanie asked anxiously.
"Yes, but the minute he acts like he doesn't want me there, then I will leave," Jason said.
"Okay, good; let's go," Stephanie said, getting up quickly and heading to the door.
Jason sat nervously in the car, as they headed over to the hospital, not knowing what was going to happen. Tony found a place to park, then turned to look at Jason, taking his hand in his, and bringing it to his lips to kiss it.
"Baby, I know you are worried about what will happen when you get up there to see your dad, but I will be right there; we will leave when you are ready," Tony said, leaning in and gently kissing Jason on the lips.
Stephanie somewhat angrily banged on the window of the car door. "Are you two coming in, or are you going to stay out here playing kissy face all day?" she said.
Jason got out of the car and gave Stephanie a stern look. "That's enough; you will not talk to us like that. Now let's go," Jason said.
The three walked into the hospital, with Jason walking slowly behind. Tony noticed, and stopped to wait for Jason to catch up.
"Honey, are you going to be okay? I'm sorry I pushed you into coming. If this is upsetting to you, we can leave," Tony said.
"No, I'm here; I need to see how he is going to react, but I just don't think it's going to go well. I have not talked with him in over seven years," Jason said, with a tear rolling down his cheek.
"Okay, Jason, I'm with you; remember that," Tony said, taking Jason's hand, and walking up to the door where Stephanie was standing. "Come on; let's go."
"Finally, are we going in today or not," Stephanie said, impatiently.
Pointing his finger at her, Jason said. "I told you that was enough. Let's go in."
Stephanie opened the door, and headed into the room. "Mom, how's dad doing?" she asked.
"Stephanie, did you get Jason to come?" Beth said.
"Yes, mother. He didn't want to come, but his boyfriend talked him into it," Stephanie said.
"Honey, don't mention Jason's boyfriend in front of your father. I don't want him upset," Beth said.
"Well, I guess I should just leave then," Jason said, walking into the room, still holding hands with Tony.
"Jason, please don't do this now. Your father doesn't need to be upset," Beth said.
"Then why did you want me here? You know he doesn't want to see me," Jason said.
"Honey, just talk with him," Beth said.
"Beth?" Charles said.
"Yes, honey, I'm here," She said, taking his hand. "Guess who is here to see you?" she asked.
Charles' eyes scanned the room, seeing Stephanie and a slight smile came to his lips. Then he continued around to look around the room, his eyes stopping on Jason and Tony. He looked down, and saw that they were holding hands. At that recognition, his machine started to beep a little louder, indicating that Charles is getting upset. Beth noticed, and began to rub his hand.
"Now, honey, calm down. I don't want you to get upset," Beth said.
As Charles began to speak, his voice was so weak you can hardly hear him. "What is that faggot doing here; get him out!" Charles said.
"Charles, now calm down. He came to see you," Beth said.
"I don't want to see him; you know my son died seven years ago. Get him out of here!" Charles said, his machine was really beeping now.
The doctor and nurses run into the room, ordering everyone out. Jason just stood there, watching his father slip away.
"Why? Why, couldn't he love me? We were best friends, until he found out I was gay.
"I know, sweetie. Let's go into the waiting room, and let the doctor's work," Tony said, taking Jason's hand, and leading him out of the room.
As they walked into the waiting room, Stephanie was trying to calm down her mother, as Beth looked up and saw Jason and Tony walking in, hand and hand.
"Why did you have to bring him? You could have come alone. This is your fault...
"Mom," Jason said, cutting her off. "I didn't want to come here; I know dad didn't want to see me. Tony convinced me to come see him. I wasn't coming alone, because I knew this is how dad would react. He can't accept that I'm gay. Tony and I are getting married. I would like for you to be there, but I know that won't happen. You have to know I love Tony, and with or without you, I will become his husband," Jason said, tears rolling down his cheek.
"Jason, can't we talk about this later," Beth said.
"No, we will not talk about this later. This, as you call it, is the man I'm going to marry. So I will not sweep it under the rug and act like it's not happening.
I'm leaving. I do hope that dad gets better, but I won't be back," Jason said, taking Tony's hand, preparing to leave.
As they got to the door, the doctor entered the room. "Mrs. Williams?" Doctor Cole said, with a look of gloom on his face.
"Y-yes, doctor? Is Charles okay?" Beth said, almost afraid to ask.
"I'm sorry....."
"NOOOOO!" Beth said, falling back onto the couch
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Williams. We could get him stable, but his heart just couldn't take it; it was too weak. I'll give you a minute; let me know if you have any questions," Doctor Cole said.
`Mom, this can't be," Stephanie said, hugging her mom
Jason and Tony just stood there, not believing what had just happened.
"Jason, baby, are you okay?" Tony asked, hugging him.
"I-I don't know what just happened here. I knew I shouldn't have come, but you insisted. Now look what has happened? Dad is gone. If I had stayed away, this wouldn't have happened. Why, couldn't you just listen to me?" Jason yelled, running out of the room.
"Jason, baby, wait!" Tony said, but Jason was gone.
Andy and Jimmy were sitting in the living room after the mess caused by Brett had been cleaned up. Brett had been taken back to jail, and would be there for a very long time.
"Dad, what are they doing to do about Daniel? Why haven't they found him yet?" Jimmy asked.
"I don't know, son, but we will find him. Until we do, I'm going to get you a bodyguard," Andy said.
"Daaaad! Do we have to? I don't want someone following me around all the time," Jimmy said.
"I know, but you mother and I don't want anything to happen to you," Andy said.
"That's right; will you please go along with this?" Melinda said, coming into the room. Jimmy jumped up to give her a hug.
"Oh, mom, I was so scared; I didn't want to lose dad," Jimmy said.
"I know, baby, it will be okay, but please do as your dad asks, and let the bodyguard be with you until Daniel is found," Melinda said.
"Okay, fine; I will be followed around," Jimmy said, sitting back on the couch.
"Good, the bodyguard is in the kitchen; I'll go get him," Andy said.
"Mom, this is crazy! Do you think Daniel will try something with me?" Jimmy asked.
"I don't know. We don't know this man, and we don't want to take any chances; so please, just go along with this," Mindy said.
"Okay. I just hope it won't be for long. Does he know I'm gay, and I have a boyfriend? Because I don't want to have to stop seeing Ben while this is going on," Jimmy said.
"Yes, he knows," Andy said, as Jimmy and Mindy turned around to look at him.
Jimmy could not believe the size of the man standing there - 6'3" and weighing over 280 pounds. Everyone laughed at the look on Jimmy's face.
"Jimmy, this is Samuel Gates; he will be with you until Daniel is found. I know you will not like this, but please try to make this work," Andy said.
"It's good to meet you, Samuel," Jimmy said, nervously reaching to shake his hand.
With a slight smile on his face, Samuel said, "Good to meet you, too, Mr. Cooper."
"Dad," Jimmy said, with a slight wine, "does he have to call me Mr. Cooper?"
"Not if you don't want him to," Andy said.
"Good, you can just call me Jimmy," Jimmy said, just as the door bell rang.
As Andy turned to get the door, Jimmy and Samuel sat down to get to know each other.
"Tony, what are you doing here? You look like you have been crying?" Andy asked.
"Is Jason here by chance?" Tony asked.
"No I haven't seen him. What's going on, Tony," Andy asked, opening the door to allow Tony in.
"This morning we had a visitor; it was Jason's sister. Well, his Dad has had a heart attack, and they wanted Jason to go to the hospital to see him. He didn't want to go, because you know his family disowned him after he came out. Well, more his parents then sister. Anyway, I talked him into going, and it didn't go well. When his father saw him, he got upset, and they couldn't calm him down. As a result, he passed away, I think he blames me. He left the hospital upset, I didn't know if he came here or where he went," Tony said, as he noticed the man with Jimmy.
`Tony, with Daniel still out there, we have hired a bodyguard for Jimmy. This is Samuel Gates; Sam this is my brother, Tony," Andy said.
"Nice to meet you, Sam. I'm sorry I came in here sounding like an idiot," Tony said, shaking his hand.
"No problem, sir," Samuel said.
"Tony, why don't you go to Mom's? Maybe he went there; you know how close they are," Andy said.
Tony quietly opened the front door to his parent's house. The sight before him made him catch his breath, as his Mom came in the room.
"Tony, you're finally here. What is going on? Jason came over here all upset, but I couldn't get him to tell me anything. I did, however, get him to settle down on the couch and he fell asleep," Carol said.
"Okay, Mom; can you give us a minute?" Tony said.
"Sure honey; I'll be upstairs if you need me," Carol said, leaving the room.
Tony slowly walked over to Jason, and knelt down, seeing the tear stains on his cheek. He reaches out and slowly touched the side of his face. As he gently rubbed the side of Jason's face, Jason began to stir. As he opened his eyes, and he saw Tony, the tears began to fall again.
"Tony, I'm sor....."
Tony put his finger on Jason lips. "Jason, I'm the one that's sorry. I should have never pushed you into going to see your Dad. I should have listen to you; you knew your father better than me. Can you forgive me?' Tony said, leaning in to give him a kiss.
"Tony, it's okay. I shouldn't have run out like I did. I just couldn't believe that my dad died, hating me," Jason said, breaking down again.
Tony got up on the couch, and took Jason into his arms, pulling him onto his lap, slowly rocking him back and forth. "Shhh, baby, it's going to be okay. I know you are hurting now, but I love you, and I will be here to help you get through this. It will take time, but everything will be okay," Tony said, kissing Jason on the top of the head.
