In the summer of 1957, 14-year-old Annette Funicello was undeniably the most popular member of ABC-TV's Mickey Mouse Club. After two popular turns on the Spin & Marty serials of 1956 and 1957, broadcast as part of the Mickey Mouse Club, Annette was rewarded with her own serial, to be entitled, simply, Annette.
The 19-part television serial was to be filmed over the summer at Burbank's Disney Studios, and like the Spin & Marty episodes, outdoor filming would take place at the rural, Golden Oak Ranch in Santa Clarita.
Annette was to play Annette McCloud, a friendly, but unsophisticated orphan girl from the country who was sent to live with her upper-class fraternal aunt and uncle.
Unlike with other Disney projects that she had been involved with, Annette was for the first time given input on the selection of her teenage castmates. In addition to Spin & Marty's Tim Considine and David Stollery who had already been cast as the central male leads, Annette chose to surround herself with her friends: Shelley Fabares, and from the Mickey Mouse Club, Doreen Tracy, Cheryl Holdridge, and Sharon Baird. Fellow Mouseketeer, Tommy Cole, was also given a minor role in the ensemble.
Perhaps most importantly, Annette didn't want Darlene Gillespie involved with the project. In Darlene's jealous mind, she was supposed to be the standout singer on the Mickey Mouse Club, but her Disney-produced singles and albums had gone nowhere. Despite Annette's admittedly thin voice, she was given increasing focus, as well as solo singing and dancing opportunities on the show, which only infuriated Darlene.
Two young actresses whom Annette didn't know at all were given key roles: Blonde-haired Judy Nugent was cast to play Jet Maypen, Annette's tomboy best friend. Roberta Shore would play Laura Rogan, Annette's teenage nemesis and rival. Both Judy and Roberta had been successfully working child actors almost all of their young lives.
Annette was excited about her first starring role, if only on a Mickey Mouse Club serial. Only 14, "Uncle Walt" had already discussed including her in future Disney feature films. With the majority of the female cast under well under age 16, the serial script was almost completely bereft of any semblance of actual romance. Per the script, later, as guests at a ranch, animosity between Jet and Laura would finally come to a head, and the two would fall into the swimming pool following a heated catfight. Judy, as Jet, was given the role of Annette's protector, as it would be most unseemly for Disney's most popular young star to engage in a physical altercation.
Although it was barely 25 miles in distance from Burbank to the Santa Clarita ranch, the trip took nearly an hour due to the often unpaved roads. The bigger stars of the production, Annette, Judy, Roberta, Tim Considine and David Stollery were transported in airconditioned Disney Studio cars, while the rest of the supporting cast arrived by a comfortable, rented bus.
Few parents had chosen to make the trip. Many of the young teens, despite a bevy of adults acting as chaperones, were excited for what they considered to be their first working overnight trip.
The scenes at the ranch were filmed first, including the fight scene.
