Samual and I apologize for the very long wait for Chapter 6. Thank you for your patience.

Devon - The Next Step

Recap from the end of Chapter 5:

Riley and Sam went down to meet the cops and ambulance so they could show them where they needed to come up to. I looked into Jason's sad eyes and asked what happened. He told me he was ashamed of what happened and he refused to open up to me. I just sat next to him and held him while he cried into my chest. As soon as the cops and ambulance arrived, Jason and I were off to the hospital. Riley and Sam followed us in Riley's car. I also called Dad for help. Dad said he and Ryan were on their way.

Chapter 6 - Devon's POV:

When we arrived at the hospital Jason was immediately placed under the care of the ER nurses and doctors. I was instructed to stay in the waiting area. After the cops arrived and I answered their questions I was allowed to go in to talk with Jason. Riley and Sam were also allowed to stay with Jason while we waited for the detectives to arrive. I eagerly waited for dad and Ryan to show up. When they arrived I told dad that we found Jason on the floor in the bedroom soaking wet and in pain with nasty bruises and welts all over his chest and back and two black eyes but that Jason refused to tell me what happened just because he was ashamed. I was crying by the time I finished telling dad all about it. He told me relax and that all will be ok.

When two detectives arrived it was immediately obvious that one of them knew my adoptive dad so they came over to talk with my dad after they completed their visit with Jason. When asked him why he was there dad said, "My son's boyfriend was the one you were just talking to." While I was listening to dad visit with the two detectives a nurse came over and told me that Jason was asking for me. She escorted me to him in the ER exam room. As I went pass the dividing curtain I saw that he was still in bed covered from the waist down. His chest was exposed and bare. As soon as he saw me he started to cry which in turn caused me begin crying. His chest and back were just nasty looking but from with I gathered the damage went below the waist as well but I did not ask any questions yet. I so badly wanted to hug and hold him but it hurt him when I tried. So he took my hand and we kissed. I wiped my tears away and asked, "Are you ready to talk about what happened." He took a deep breath, looked at me and told me a voice just above a whisper, "I am just too ashamed. I cannot talk about it just yet." I squeezed his hand and told him, "Jason, I fully understand. Please know that I will be here when you are ready to talk about it." Just then the nurse and two CNA's came in to take Jason to get come X-rays.

Later that day after Jason was moved to a permanent hospital room I held his hand as I watched him sleep. I eagerly waited for him to wake up and talk with me. Dad and Ryan entered the room and the three of us had a good visit. While we visited Jason woke up. He looked at me and asked, "What happened?" I squeezed his hand and kissed him on the forehead. Dad, Ryan and I looked at each other perplexed. I took Jason's hand and asked, "What is the last thing you remember?" He got this look of sadness and fear on his face. As he looked down I saw tears running down his face. I slightly squeezed his had and he looked back up at me. With sobs he said, "I am so sorry." And then he started to have a panic attack. A nurse rushed in with a doctor right behind her. The doctor quietly gave the nurse some instructions. Within a few seconds she gave Jason an injection. He immediately calmed down and fell asleep.

The doctor told us the Jason would be asleep for a few hours. So Dad, Ryan and I went somewhere we could get something to eat and visit. On the way to the dinner I gave Riley a call to give him an update and asked, "Please tell Sam for me. I will get back with you guys with more information as soon as possible." Riley said, "I will indeed tell Sam. Like you just said, get back with ASAP. If I do not hear from you, then expect a call from me."

After we ordered our food dad said, "The University Police are treating what happened to Jason as a hate crime. They have some leads that they are looking into. They are increasing security at the dorms and have put out an alert asking students and others to come forward with any information that may be helpful. Devon, did you know Jason lived with his grandparents until they passed away last year? He is their sole heir and is living off a trust fund. His parents were cut out of his grandparent's will after they disowned Jason when he told them that he was gay. They contested the will but lost the court battle. Jason's grandparents loved him. They took him into their home as their own son." I sat there in the dinner booth shocked and asked, "Dad, do you think could Jason's parents could have done this?" He said, "Son, it is not out of the realm of possibilities." As I reflected on what I went through with my ex-parents, sadness filled my heart because of what Jason had also experienced. After we finished eating we headed back to the hospital. Dad asked, "Do you want to go home with Jason after he is discharged?" I said, "I will ask Jason. But I don't want to go that direction unless he is ready. Either way we are going to hit this situation head on!"

We arrived back at the hospital just as Riley and Sam showed up so we went to see Jason together. When we approached the room we were stopped by a police officer who was standing guard. He asked for our ID's. It was very helpful when the nurse spoke to the officer and cleared us with him. He immediately let us in the room. Jason was still sleeping. The nurse tending to him told us that he was doing fine but that we were NOT to wake him up. So we all talked in hushed tones for awhile. It was not long before everyone but me went to get some coffee. I stayed behind and held Jason's hand.

As Jason started to wake up and open his eyes, I called for the nurse. He gave me a sad but peaceful smile. I leaned in and kissed him. I turned beet red when the nurse walked in and saw what I was doing. I was encouraged when I noticed that she had a big smile on her face. As she used some of her instruments to check Jason over she asked him a few questions and then told us she was going to go find the doctor. As soon as the nurse left the room I seized the opportunity to ask Jason, "Are you ready to talk about what happened?" He looked at me and started to get visibly upset. So I grabbed his hand and said, "Hey babe, relax. You do not have to say anything." He quickly calmed down and his facial expression changed to one of peace and thankfulness. I asked, "Do you want to go back to the dorm at school or move in with Riley and me. I will stand by you whatever you decide to do and so will my family." A look of relief came to his face. He thanked me and told me that he loved me. I said, "Jason I love you too and I will do anything to keep you safe and happy." As we chatted the doctor came in and right behind him was my family. The doctor looked him over asked him about his level of pain and other stuff. The doctor said, "I am satisfied with his answers and he is improving very well. I will discharge him tomorrow." We were all elated when we received that very good report from the doctor.

I again asked Jason what he wanted to do. He said, "Well first I need some clothes to put on so I can go back to school." I smiled at him and said, "Relax, babe. I will go get some clothes for you. But will you move in with Riley and me?" Riley had a big smile on his face and was nodding, indicating his approval. Jason replied, "Thank you. Yes, I would like that very much." Riley and I told Jason that we would take care of everything. Riley called Sam and told her what was up and asked for her help in moving Jason to our room and then he made few more calls. Dad talked to the Chief of Police and the Dean of Students at the school and they both agreed to the move and told dad that security would remain on a high alert status at our dorm until further notice. When Riley and I got back to the dorm Sam was waiting for us with a gym bag that was stuffed with clothes for Jason. She told us that all of Jason's stuff had been moved to our room with the help of the building staff, football team and other friends we had. As soon as we got back to our room I took a shower and changed. Riley had to head to football practice. I asked him to thank everyone for their spontaneous help. I also asked Sam to do the same with the building staff.

I then left to go back to the hospital to be with Jason. Just as I arrived dad and some other guy in a suit came out of Jason's room. I overheard dad say to him it was nice to meet him and that we would be in touch soon. I asked dad who that was and he pointed to Jason's room and said, "Let's go in with Jason." Ryan was siting next to Jason talking about sports and other stuff. As we entered Ryan got up from his chair. Dad looked at Jason and me and said, "You guys visit for awhile. Ryan and I will be back in a few minutes." . I looked at Jason and asked, "What was that all about?" He took a deep breath and motioned to the chair next to the bed, so I sat down and took his hand. He let out his breath and began to explain. "The man in the suit is my grandparent's lawyer. He was called by the university because he is listed as my emergency contact. Devon, my parents kicked me out of the house and disowned me when I told them that I was gay. With no place to go I called my grandparents and told them what happened. They immediately took me in against my parent's wishes. They even tried to have me removed by court order. But it all backfired on them when the court granted custody of me to my grandparents. Parental rights were terminated right then and there in the court room. When my grandparents passed away last year I was their sole heir. My parents were cut out of their will. Everything has been left to me. The lawyer is the executor of the will and my guardian until I turn 25. At that point in time I will get control of 25% of the estate. But the only problem with that is if anything happens to me the trust then goes to my parents since they are next of kin. So when the university called the lawyer, he flew in and we had a little meeting with your dad. We decided to make a will for me. You are now listed as beneficiary of my trust along with your dad." I was left speechless and in shock. I was taken back by all of this and asked Jason, "Why did you do this?" His answer was simple and to the point, "I love you!" With that my eyes started to swell up with tears and so did Jason's. By the time we had composed ourselves dad and Ryan returned. Dad asked, "Devon, do you understand everything Jason told you?" I looked at him and said, "Yes and no. But I will work it out in my head soon." He chuckled. We all talked about the next step. I told Jason that with the help of the building staff and football team he was now moved into our dorm room. Dad also reminded us about his talk with the Dean of Students and the Chief of Police. We told dad that we are confident that we will be okay for now.
