A Captain's Lie
Nearly half of the team's points had been scored by Jordy that afternoon. Everytime he ran with the ball clutched firmly in his hands he felt confidant, he felt worshipped by the hundreds in the stands screaming their lungs out, he felt sexy as hell, knowing who the girls was checking him out in his tight fitting Rugby uniform. He was 17 years of age, a stubble just wanting to be seen on his strong, manly chin. He had black hair which he kept in a spiked up gelled style, not to mention his eight pack abs that the girls seem to swoon over. A lot of people said that he could have been a dead ringer for Casey Deidrick, the guy who played Chad on Days of our Lives. And to round it off, there was no greater feeling when he touched the ball down across the whitewash of the opposing team to score a try. Jordy was born to play Rugby, he felt, there was nothing he wanted more out of life than to hold that golden William Webb Ellis trophy in his hands one day as a professional.
But right here, right now, it was just another game playing for his highschool, Castleford High, against another of the school teams they usually faced in the youth league. The score 37-12 in the favour of Jordy's team with only about 3 minutes remaining. Jordy switched the ball over to his captain, Monty, who kicked it out of play in order to borrow some time. They knew they had won the game, but points difference could be taken into account especially of the opponents managed a try of their own. The referee's whistle blew sharply, indicating a direct penalty to Jordy's team, and with that, they were sure they had the game in the bag. Jordy, on the other hand, wasn't happy at all as he saw who had conceded the penalty for their opponents. He ran over to the boy who had a look on his face like the world had just ended.
"Jeez Farrow, what the fuck, man?" Jordy whispered to the boy whilst he help pull him upwards.
"Hey that bastard of yours have been on my case the entire game! Or maybe the ref didn't notice how he fucking grabbed my junk when all the scrumming was going on!" Farrow hissed at his best friend, angrily pushing him away in frustration.
"Tell me which one after this kick and I'll have a word with him, okay? Farrow?"
"Yeah whatever, go and take the penalty, everyone's waiting for you," Farrow said with a rash look in his blue eyes. Wasn't it ironic? Each and every time that his school played Jordy's in the league he tried extra hard not to concede a penalty, because he knew that as the Number 10 for his team, Jordy was the one who always took the penalties and convertions. He shook his head.
Jordy gathered the Rugby ball and placed it securely on the grass spot, where it would be more of a inconvienense for him. He already formulated the plan in his head when he saw that it was Farrow who had made the bad tackle. He took a few steps back, bent down, his abs rippling underneath his shirt, picked up a smidgen of grass, and pretended to check where the win was blowing from. He steeled himself, knowing that nothing could come from this, his team had won the game and missing this penalty on purpose wouldn't matter. He gathered his strength and kicked the ball as hard as he could. As the people in the stands was getting ready to cheer on what they assumed would be another great conversion from Jordy Dean, their best player on the field...noises of incredible disbelief could be heard when the ball narrowly missed going over the pole, incredibely, slamming against the metal bar and before tumbeling to the ground, bouncing twice and coming to a standstill. The crowd was silent. Jordy and Farrow both knew why. Jordy had never, ever in his two years in the Rugby team, missed a drop goal, a conversion, or a penalty before. The sound of the referee's whistle ended the game, and Jordy looked around at Farrow. The latter boy had tears in his eyes, which he immediately wiped away when he saw his best friend looking at him. He gathered himself and jogged with his own teammates back to the locker rooms.
After the game, all the lads comforted Jordy for missing the kick, everybody was understanding, even the captain, Monty, said that there came a time in a player's life where they had to make a mistake in the game, otherwise they wouldn't be human. Jordy just smiled and changed as quick as he could. They wouldn't be so understand if they knew the truth. If they did, he would surely have been thrown off the team. Once everyone was dressed and got into their cars to drive home with their families, Jordy stayed behind, and he quickly grabbed his BlackBerry from his pocket, typing a BBM message to Farrow.
"Dude, you sleeping over tonight? We need to talk."
It was only when Jordy and his parents were driving down the street there they resided that the reply came through.
"Yeah man, if your folks don't mind?? #askthem"
"Mom...Dad? Is it okay if Farrow spends the night?"
"Well I don't know, Jordy, there is a lot of stories doing on about that kid. I can't understand why you would want to be friends with someone like that! Did you know that he was suspended from your own school because he set one of the classrooms on fire?"
"Dad come on, that was never proven! They just assumed it was Jordy because he was the only kid in Grade 8 who carried a lighter with him!"
"Now you see, Jordy? If he carries a lighter with him, that either means he needs it to light cigarettes or pot, heaven forbid, or to do crazy and abnormal things like burning down a entire classroom! I'm sorry, son, I am just not ready to make a decision like that."
"Mom, please talk to dad?" Jordy knew that he was moving in on dangerous terratory right now, but he needed to see Farrow. Badly too.
"I'm sorry, Jordy. I'm no more convinced by this Farrow boy than you're father is."
And that for Jordy Dean, was that.
The following week, Jordy's school played another match against St Celia High, the one team who they had never been able to beat in a game of
Rugby. The previous year they narrowly lost as a last minute try and conversion from their stand out player, Zan Locke overtook the five points lead that they had over them at the time. Jordy was fit and ready to go, he had a feeling that this was going to be it. Today they were beating those bastards on their own field.
At half time things seemed bleak though. St Celia 35 - 14 Castleford High with their respective school's points being scored by Jordy and by Zan Locke respecitvely. It seemed that St Celia's boys were just more determinted to keep their undefeated recored against Castleford intact and was willing to resort to foul play to do so. There had been a couple of times in which Jordy knew that he was their main target. Brutal tackles and swipes, punches in the stomach when the scrums was going on, all "missed" by the referee. There was an minor altercation between Jordy and his team when Farrow had somehow managed to enter their locker room, and him being on another Rugby team rival to their own, had the guys on him in seconds.
"You're coming to spy on us, you little shit?" Casteford High's captain Monty yelled in Farrow's face, with such a brutality that his saliva spattered on the latter's chin.
"Monty, come on dude, he's my friend, let him go, come on!" Jordy yelled, breaking through the pack to get to Farrow.
"I don't like this, Jordy! I ain't digging this at all, my man. You should know where your loyalties lie," Monty said, still glaring at Farrow.
"Oi, back the fuck up here, Monty! Who scored all our points so far in this game! Me! Not one of you has even LOOKED like scoring! I'm fucking carrying this team on my own, which is more than I can say for you, Captain!"
The locker room was strangely silent and Monty and the rest of the team stared at Jordy in sheer disbelief. Jordy took Farrow by his arm and led him out.
"Sorry for that, dude. You know how it is," he apologised when they were out of hear sight.
"I just wanted to say, that Zan fucker who's scoring all those points for St Celia's is always guarded. That's why he's scored fucking five tries against you! You lot are shit worried about him alone and not about one of their other players! Take your focus off Zan and you'll see that he's creating chances for himself, BY USING HIS TEAMMATES! Do you think he's running through your defence by himself? Hell no! He's got two dudes next to him always, Gardner and Fourie, they are always just behind him. If you stop them, you stop Zan, and if you stop Zan..."
"...we stop St Celia scoring..." Jordy whispered. Why the fuck didn't Monty see this when they prepared for the match! Its his fucking job as captain to make sure of stuff like this!
"I'll be cheering you on, Jordy. Good luck!" Farrow said, extending out his hand in a high five gesture. Jordy looked at Farrow, so excited and a look of being full of life on his face. He slammed his hand into Farrow's.
They both felt it. It was clear as daylight. Electricity streaming through both of their hands, through the sudden warm feeling generating through their chests, reflecting through their eyes in those of the other. It, to say the least, terrorised both seventeen year old boys. They have been good friends these two years, the best...what the fuck was going on...?
"I...uhm...I gotta go, the second half is starting," Jordy said slowly, unable to take his eyes off Farrow.
"Uhm...yeah man, I'll be cheering you on...and I'll take my hand back now," Farrow said, trying to bring a little of their usual banter into the convo. This was not normal. After Jordy ran to the locker room after his team, Farrow closed his eyes and shook his head. Fuckin hell...
St Celia Highschool's supporters was booing their own players so loud, it was totally overshadowing the insane cheers and shouts from the Castleford High supporters. They were positively going crazy as their team were infront by 5 points. The score, which had been 35-14 at halftime, had now been transformed into 47-42 for some reason that the St Celia players couldn't understand. St Celia was still infront, but only by five points and a try now for Castleford would given them that MUCH desired win. They were able to easily penetrate Casteford's defence in the first half, thanks to their plan of allowing Castleford to focus on Zan, and not on the two overlapping fullbacks. But in the second half, Zan was simply not receiving any service AND in the total confustion over what was going on, St Celia had allowed Jordy and other Castleford players to score tries against them at will. Jordy was having the game of his life.
As the game neared its end, Jordy swiftly intercepted a forward pass from a St Celia player and stormed passed the St Celia defence and seeing thus is captain was wide opend, passed the ball to Monty, the captain making a running dash for the end of the field, his eyes locked to underside of the bar. Jordy quickly looked up at the the scoreboard...there was only a minute left on the clock. Monty was getting closer and closer to the whitewash...there was two St Celia players right behind him. It was as if Monty knew that he was about to be given two body slams from them because a split second before he tumbled to the ground in the attempt to stop him, he passed the ball to Jordy, who caught it with ease. There was nothing stopping him now. The two fullbacks who had tackled Monty to the ground was still struggling to get up, but with Jordy's speed, there was no way they would be able to stop him. The Castleford supporters exploded on the vistor's side of the pavillion as that long awaited victory was about to be given to them by the player they loved the most. Out of the corner of his eye, Jordy saw Farrow jumping up and down, willing him on. He was a mere few feet away from the white line...but suddenly the sound dimmed somewhat on the visitor's side. Jordy was still running as quickly as he could, but for some reason, he heard that the St Celia supporters had regained their voices...something was happening, but he didn't dare turn around. He was moments away from scoring that all important try...
The St Celia crowd ROARED as Jordy was crunch tackled just before he reached the line to score the try which would have surely won them the match. The ball flew out of his hands, safely into the arms of the St Celia captain. Jordy never in his seventeen years of living felt such an excrutiating amount of pain. He layed on his back and grabbed his leg with all the strength he could muster, only to cry a sharp yelp of pain powering through his leg when touched. In his hindsight, he heard Farrow's voice, he heard the referee calling urgently for the medics...and just before he had no choice but to close his eyes due to the shattering nerves of pain.........he saw Zan being high fived and surrounded by his teammates in celebration...
"Dude...what are you saying?" Monty stood at the right hand side of Jordy's bed with a freaked out look on his face. It was clear that Jordy was trying his damdest not to allow the tears, held kidnapped in his eyes, roll down and allow his captain to see him in a moment of weakness.
"Monty...you heard me. There is a chance I'll never be able to play again. My knee was damaged badly and two tendons was smashed. The first question I asked the doctor was when I would be able to play again. And...that's what he said."
Monty ran his hands through his hair in devistation. This was the best player that Castleford High had. If he wasn't able to play any more...
"Dude, isnt't there some kinda of surgery that can be done?" he asked, desperation in his voice.
"Monty, don't you fucking think I'd be out on the field right now if I could have been? Do you really think I want to fucking lie here doing nothing but depress myself?" Jordy shouted, those tears he tried so hard to keep inside now freely flowing over his cheeks. There was only so much a teenage boy could handle. A knock on the hospital room's door startled them, Farrow's face appeared around the door.
"Oh...I'm sorry I didn't know you had company."
"Come on in, pal. Monty was just leaving," Jordy said decisively. Monty rolled his eyes and turned back to Jordy.
"Get some rest, bud. I'll pop in again sometime, okay?" he said, his voice hoarse with emotion. Jordy simply nodded, before Monty squeezed his shoulder tenderly, walking out without so much as a glare towards Farrow.
"That captain of yours need to chill the fuck out, man. Listen, I spoke to my uncle, he is a surgeon aswell. We can let him check you out, maybe he can help you," Farrow said excitedly.
"Farrow...I've already had THREE specialists working on my leg and all of them has the same diagnosis, or whatever you call it. Neither of them think I'll ever be able to play again. That fucking Zan bastard. If I ever get out of here, I'm gonna fuck him up so bad," Jordy said with murder in his eyes. Farrow reached out and placed his hand on Jordy's stomach.
"Dude, don't. Just don't, okay? I saw the whole thing. When Monty passed you the ball that day, everyone was going crazy because we knew how fast you were. I dunno where the hell Zan got his speed from, he was more than a couple of meters behind you. Somehow he got to you and tackled you. We all thought you were gonna score," Farrow said sadly, his hand still on Jordy's stomach.
Jordy looked distinctly at the hand on his stomach. He then lifted his head and looked Farrow straight in the eyes. Farrow's eyes widened as Jordy slowly, as if in a dream, placed his own right hand on top of Farrow's. He could feel his best friend tense up, but then eventually relax with a big sigh.
"What's happening with us, bro?" Jordy whispered.
"I dunno, Jordy. I dunno. I've felt like this for a long time. You're the only person who stood by me when that class burned down. You're the only one who believed it wasn't me. We're good friends and we hang out a lot. It just...I dunno...it just happened," Farrow said, looking into Jordy's eyes all while he spoke.
"I feel the same. God help us if this gets out," Jordy said, lying his head back onto the pillow.
"That day...when we were playing you guys in the match, and when you miskicked that penalty...you did that on purpose, didn't you?" Farrow asked, not looking at Jordy.
"Uhm...what makes you think that?" Jordy answered hoarsely.
"Come on, Jordy, I'm your best friend, I think I know you better than that. You've never missed a penalty or conversation in your life. So how's it work that the one you DO miss, is the one that I gave away?"
Jordy smiled slightly and rolled his head over to watch Farrow.
"Like you said...it was the one YOU gave away. You're my best friend."
Farrow swallowed deeply and knew that whatever happened next, would define their friendship in the coming years. He carefully stood up and placed his hand on Jordy's face.
"My God...you're fucking beautiful," he said, his voice breaking.
"Ditto, dude," Jordy whispered.
Slowly Farrow leaned down and carefully placed his lips on Jordy's. Both boys moaned as it what they have been dreaming of was actually happening. Farrow deepened the kiss as Jordy carefully pulled Farrow's face towards him. The two boys were getting so turned on about the kiss that they didn't hear the door opening. It was only when...
"FUCKING HELL!"
Jordy and Farrow turned around, immediately breaking the kiss, as they watched Zan poking his head around the door.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Jordy yelled angrily.
"I just came...just came to apo...whatever. I don't talk to faggots," Zan said before closing the door.
"That's it, I'm fucking him up this time," Jordy said, trying to lift himself off the bed, but Farrow pushed him back.
"Don't worry about him, okay? He's nothing is your life. I know you're angry. But think of your Rugby career! Even if there's just a 1% chance that you can play again, you can't fuck it up!"
"The whole fucking world is gonna know now, Farrow! You think Zan is gonna stay quiet about this?" Jordy fumed.
"Hey...if people can't accept you for who you are, fuck them. Hey, I gotta get home."
"Wait!"
Farrow turned around and looked at Jordy with love in his eyes.
"What, Jordy?"
"I love you, Farrow. I do, I really do."
Jordy was speaking super fast, perhaps scared that he might lose his nerve to tell Farrow how he felt if he didn't. Farrow smiled and walked over to Jordy, leaning down and placing a kiss on Jordy's forehead.
"I love you more. Now that that's over, get some sleep, dickhead!" he said before flicking Jordy's ear, before finally leaving the room. Jordy was stunned. My God...he was gay...he never, ever thought it might happen to him. But this...the love he felt for Farrow...fuck the gay labelling shit. If that meant he was gay, then so be it. He loved Farrow with all his heart. The warmth in his chest, was suddenly replaced with hatred for that Zan bastard, the person responsible for him perhaps never playing Rugby again.
"I'm gonna get that bastard. Even if it kills me," Jordy whispered, before carefully laying his head down and closing his eyes.
Farrow was nearly home before his mother phoned him and asked if he could get them some milk and bread at the local Minute Mart. He stopped at the shop, and locked his car, walking across the road. Inside the store his phone rang again, and he inwardly groaned when it was a unknown number. He hated those. He refused to answer, but by the time his groceries was packed, the number had already called four times. Just when he exited the store, the number phoned again, and angrily, he placed his stuff down and answered.
"Who the fuck is this?"
"Farrow, its me. Gary."
"Oh my gosh...come on, who's this? Stop lying!"
"Farrow, its me! Your fucking twin brother! We were seperated because Mom caught us fooling around two years ago, remember?"
Farrow's face turned from anger into remembrance.
"Gary...dude where the hell are you, Gazza?"
"My foster family are heading to your new town. I didn't tell them you, Mom and Dad moved there when they mentioned it. My foster dad's sister lives there and its her birthday. I wanted to know if you wanna meet up sometime?"
"Gary, the courts ordered us not to see eachother for while, you know that."
"Fuck that shit! We're seventeen now, I haven't seen my twin brother in nearly three years, come on, Slugger!"
Farrow's resistance crumbled when he heard Gary's nickname for him yet again. No one ever called him that, except Gary. He closed his eyes. He didn't wanna be reminded why they had to be seperated in the first place.
"Okay, we can, don't worry. But Gazza...nothing can happen between us. We promised eachother."
"I'm into girls, Slugger, always have been! We jus messed around back then. It's over now. You know that more than me!"
"Okay, Gazza. Call me when you're here. See ya," Farrow switched off his phone and placed it back in his jeans's pocket whilst crossing the street walking to his car.
He barely had time to see the BMW blasting across the busy road before the car smashed into him. His lanky body flew upwards and came down with a thud against the pavement. His head seemed to snap back as it smacked against the gravel. A trickle of blood started to flow from his ear and nose.
The driver of the car sped off, scared to hell that someone might have a chance to get his licence plate number of to identify him. Zan looked in his review mirror to check if the police was following him. Nothing. He might just have gotten away with this.
Oh no! Jordy might never play Rugby again, and just as he and Farrow had found eachother, THIS happens! Zan has ruined Jordy's life, and now he might have ended Farrow's! What is the story behind Farrow's twin brother, Gary? And where does Monty fit into all this?
