It was my nephew Dan standing there. I buzzed him in and opened my apartment door.

"What the hell Dan?"

"It's a long weekend so I thought I'd pay you a visit."

"Bullshit Dan. Spill it."

"Uncle Jeff, I'm over 16 now. I still want to be with you."

"That may well make you 'legal', but I told you before not until you're at least 18, if then. I meant it, Dan. Your dad know you're here?"

"He should by now."

"So no. Get your ass in here and call him."

Dan got on the phone spoke to his dad, and then handed the phone to me.

"So little brother what are you going to do?"

"Not a damn thing other than to watch out for him. You want him on the first train in the morning?"

"Up to you Jeff. You think any of the tenants would entertain him?"

"They all know he's my nephew. I doubt it like hell."

"You might think I'm crazy Jeff, but let it happen."

"WHAT!?"

"Let it happen. I know how you run that building. I don't think any of the guys there would set out to hurt him, and let's face it. He's going to do it one way or another. This is at least somewhat controlled circumstances. Let him stay until Sunday night and then get him on the late train, or the first one Monday morning."

"Ok Mike, you're his dad, so it is your call."

"Call me if there's a problem."

I hung up the phone.

"Well, you know where your bedroom is, you might as well settle in."

"And?"

"And what I said stands. We will not be getting physical for at least 2 years, if then."

"But you won't stand in my way if I talk to other folks in the building?"

"I won't say a word, but I'm sure they all remember my warning from last time."

"Last time I wasn't legal."

"I'm still betting they will all have it in mind. One thing though, I'd consider it a lot safer if you didn't go looking outside of the building."

Dan just got a bit of a smile on his face.

"Done deal."

"Something else just came to mind. We may well see a family services representative here this weekend. One of the couples is trying to adopt a child. Please don't do anything that might screw that up, like walking around in your underwear or something."

"I'd do my best Uncle Jeff."

"You have any supper yet?"

"Yeah, I ate on the train."

Dan put his bag in the spare bedroom and then headed for the door.

"Where are you headed please?"

"Up to the roof if that's alright with you?"

"Fine, I'll probably be up in a bit."

Dan headed on out and closed the door behind him. I heard him speaking to someone in the hall. When I looked out my front window, Dana was just on his way out to work.

My mind went back to that night on the roof when Dana looked at me and I nodded yes to him. I wondered now if that was going to come back and haunt me.

I decided I had better head upstairs sooner rather than later. naturally, the first one I ran into when I got there was Ken Jenkins.

"Jeff..."

"Hey, he's my nephew, sixteen and curious. Legally there's not a thing I can do."

"The kid is likely to get more than he bargains for and you know it."

"I'm sure you remember what it was like to be sixteen Ken. Indestructible and ready to take on the world. Everybody knows he's my nephew and they were given the word when he was here for a week last summer. Regardless, I know that physically, he can take care of himself. I'm pretty sure that not one of these guys is going to take him up and if they do, they're going to be damn careful."

"Hope to hell you're right."

I didn't interfere with Dan, just found myself a place to watch from. I could see that a few guys were entertaining the idea of accommodating the kid. One look in my direction and the sparkle went out of their eyes.

Bob and Ken were the next ones to stop and talk.

"He's a good-looking kid Jeff. He's not going to do anything to screw up our chances is he?"

"He's been made aware that we might well have visitors and told me he would do his best not to cause any problems."

"Guess we can't ask for more than that. We'll be picking the kid up tomorrow morning."

"Here's hoping."

The next time I looked, Dan was talking to Kevin Caine from 5D. Kevin was just barely 21 and was one of the newest tenants. He was in the local theatre company. The sparkle hadn't left his eyes, even after he noticed me watching.

I'd never been with Kevin, so I had no idea what kind of a lover he might be. As I didn't pry into the guy's lives, I also had no idea whom he might have been with to ask.

Ben Collins from 4A sidled up to me.

"I see the look in Kev's eyes Jeff. Let me put your mind somewhat at ease. Kev has always been a gentle lover to me at least."

"Thanks, Ben. That helps a little."

When I looked back at Kevin, he had a bit of a pouty face. Dan had a few more words with him and turned and walked towards me.

Dan sat down beside me.

"What do you know about that Kevin guy Uncle Jeff?"

"I haven't had any problems with him. Beyond that, I couldn't honestly tell you anything from first-hand experience even if I did know."

"I suppose that goes for everybody in the building?"

"It does, and I'd expect you to abide by that principle as well should you 'get lucky'."

"I can deal with that and it sounds like a good policy."

"So, if you're attracted why are you sitting here?"

"Just weighing my options Uncle Jeff."

"Well, not to get preachy, but weigh them damned carefully. The potential for you to get hurt is high, even with these guys."

"I can take care of myself Uncle Jeff."

"I'm not talking just physical Dan."

"I know. I've got my head on straight Uncle Jeff. I've read a bit about it all."

"Reading and experiencing are two different things, Dan."

"Sounds like you're trying to talk me out of it."

"If I thought I had a snowball's chance in hell, I'd talk all night. But, you're just like your dad. Once you get an idea into your head that's all there is."

I realized that this is exactly why Mike had said to go ahead and let it happen.

"So, is Gary going to follow in your footsteps?"

""Hell if I know, but there are 3 years to worry about that."

"That's only legally speaking. He gets it in his head and it could lead anywhere."

"I suppose so, but then at least he'll have me at home to lean on."

"Your dad hasn't been supportive?"

"Dad's been right there for me Uncle Jeff, but he doesn't have any 'first hand' experience."

"No, I don't suppose he does, and I know some of the town's residents are rather opinionated."

"Yeah, Dr Rickers for one will run his mouth at the drop of a hat."

"He's always been that way."

"And you never took him down for it?"

"Not my style. He's entitled to his opinion no matter how narrow-minded it is."

"The way you took that guy down last time I was here, I thought for sure you would have taken Dr Rickers on at some point."

"Dr. Rickers never got physical about it Dan, just verbose. The guy in the park was getting very physical about it and I needed to protect myself. Big difference."

"You have to defend yourself often?"

"Just a couple of times. I try not to let things escalate to that point, but once in a while, there's just no way around it. Well, I'm heading in for the night. Here's my spare key. Don't stay up here too late."

"I won't Uncle Jeff."

I headed down to my apartment and lay in bed wide awake until I heard Dan come in. Once I knew he was down for the night I slipped off to sleep.

A safe and Happy Holidays to you all! See you next year!
