721 Anderson Avenue. It could be in any city in the United States. It is a lowrise apartment building and I happen to be the super as well as the owner, but the residents don't know that.
It is an all male building, so as you might suspect a goodly portion of the residents are gay or bi. Those that aren't are gay friendly.
I inherited the building from my aunt a few years ago. The one thing Aunt Angie insisted on was staying up to date. So no faulty wiring or leaking pipes here. Every apartment was gone through when it was vacated by a professional crew to be cleaned and the walls were either scrubbed or repainted or both. No dark corridors and the elevator worked about 99% of the time.
I'm Jeff and I have apartment 1A. I'm easy on the eyes, but sure as hell no Adonis, and yes I'm one of the gay ones, which was probably why Aunt Angie left the place to me and not one of my brothers.
So the building is 7 floors with 4 apartements on each of the first 6 and two penthouse apartments. The one improvement I had made was to turn the roof into a patio area for everyone. It wasn't unusual to find a party there on any given weekend.
This Friday was no different. These were all working people and this was now their weekend and they were entitled to a little relaxation. I was up there because, well hell, I liked most of these guys.
Lately Andrew from 6 B had been trying to be a bit more likeable than the others. It was a little after 10 and Andrew, never Andy, was very relaxed and all over me.
"Awww comeon Jeff, just one night? You know you want to."
"Andrew you've had a bit to much to drink tonight and I don't think it would be a good idea."
"Stuck up bitch! Who are you taking to bed tonight? I bet it's Dana the little tart!"
"Andrew, whom I sleep with is none of your damned business and I might remind you of the terms of your lease. Any sexually offensive discussions or those of a harrassing or disparageing nature are grounds to have you evicted. Now why don't you head to bed and call it a night."
"Bitch, you can't talk to me like that. I'll make a complaint to the building management."
"You are of course free to do so for all the good it will do you."
We had, of course, attracted a crowd by this time. I had plenty of witnesses on my side, not that they knew I needed any. Andrew looked around and then stomped off inside the building.
"Ok folks drama is over. Relax and enjoy yourselves."
The people went back to what they were doing and I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to find the aforementioned Dana.
"I sure as hell wouldn't mind spending some time with you Jeff."
Dana was the very definition of twink and truth to tell I wouldn't mind spending an evening with him myself.
"I wouldn't mind either Dana, but now is lousy timing with Andrew and all."
"I understand Jeff,but I'm not giving up."
"Just watch your back for the next few days. I don't trust Andrew like I used to."
"Oh I will Jeff. He's such a drama queen sometimes."
"Yeah well ever since Charles moved out he hasn't been the same, more desperate I would guess I'd have to say."
"I didn't know Charles that well, don't know Andrew that well either when it comes to that."
"Well just trust me Dana. He is a different person. I think I'll be calling it a night."
"Alone?"
"Yeah alone. Maybe some other time Dana."
"I'm going to hold you to that."
I headed inside and down to my apartment. I knew those on the roof wouldn't keep things going to much longer or get to loud. I was asleep a little bit later. Along about 2 am my buzzer was being leaned on. I got up and looked out the window to see a couple of police officers at the door. Good thing I almost always wore sleep pants to bed. I grabbed a tee shirt and went and buzzed them in.
"We have a domestic voilence call placed by a Dana Mcbride."
"Apartment 4B."
I knew without even going up that Andrew had boiled over and done something stupid. I moved to accompany the officers.
"Please stay down here sir."
"I'm responsible for what goes on in this building officer and the kid is a friend of mine."
"Then at the very least stay back out of our way."
"Done."
We went upstairs together and I waited at the elevator while the officers went to Dana's door. It seemed to take forever for Dana to open his door.
"Fuck call a bus!"
That I knew wasn't good. Both officers went into the apartment and "cleared it." When I heard the ambulance siren I took the elevator back down and let them in and then took them up to the 4th floor. Dana was strapped in and on his way to the local hospital. He had been pretty badly beaten.
"Any idea who might have done this sir?"
"I have a damn good idea. Andrew Banes apartment 6B. I assume you officers know the makeup of the building?"
"Yes sir mostly gay men. Your point?"
"Mr Banes tried to proposition me earlier this evening and I turned him down. He thought Mr McBride was the object of my eye. I think you can draw your own conclusions."
"Indeed we can. 6B you said?"
"Yes."
I let the officers go up without me. I went back to my apartment and got some real clothes on and was about to head out to the hospital when they brought Andrew down.
"Sir, did you notice whether or not Mr Banes had bruised or bloodied knuckles earlier this evening?"
"He did not."
"Lieing bitch! I'll see you fired for this."
"Mr Banes you are here by served notice of eviction. You shall be out of this building within 30 days. I shall have the paperwork presented in the morning."
"You can't do that! I'll protest to the owner!"
"Again you can do so but I doubt it will do you any good."
The officers took him away and I headed for the hospital.
"Are you family sir?"
"No I'm his friend and his landlord."
"I'm sorry sir I'm not allowed to give you any information beyond the fact that he is being held overnight at the very least. You can see him tomorrow after 10 am when visiting hours start."
It was frustrating but the nurse was only doing her job. I went home and realized that I wasn't about to get any sleep this evening. I booted my computer and printed out the eviction notice. My dear Aunt had also had a policy of advising the other tenants when an eviction was being served so that any who felt compelled could speak in the evictees behalf. I printed those and stuffed them into mail boxes.
After the sun was up the questions started. I answered them all and the overwhelming reaction was that Andrew was guilty and that there didn't appear to be anyone who was going to speak up for him.
10 am rolled around and I was right there at the front desk to get Danas room number. He was in a ward so I drew the drapes around us and took his hand. He opened his eyes and looked at me.
"I must be a sight."
"I'm thinking you will be just fine. Andrew?"
"Yeah."
"The police already have him in custody. I imagine they will be by for a statement anytime now. Don't you worry about him. His eviction notice is already in his mail box.
They tell you how long I'm going to be in here?"
"They haven't told me squat."
"Perhaps I can help with that."
An older man had entered the room, obviously a doctor.
"You young man have a broken rib and multiple contusions and abrasions. In other words somebody beat the snot out of you. You're going to be here for several days at least until I'm convinced that rib is healed."
"I can't be out of work that long!"
"Don't you worry about your rent Dana, I'll have a word with the owner."
"Will you have a word with my boss too? He won't hold my spot for very long."
"Where do you work Dana? I'll go and speak to him."
Dana turned a bit red in the face.
"At Club Man......as a dancer."
"Ah,not a problem then. Julius owes me a few favors. You just concentrate on healing. Do you have a lawyer?"
"No,what do I need a lawyer for?"
"Because you are going to sue Andrew for your hospital bills, pain and suffering and whatever else the legal beagles can come up with. Plus we get a restraining order to keep him away from you."
"Jeez you're pissed aren't you?"
"Does it show? Damn right I'm pissed. I want everybody in the building to feel safe. If they don't I'm not doing my job. There will probably be someone from the offices of Clark and Associates in sometime within the next couple of days. Cooperate with them and be fully open. Doc, anything need to be put in place for when he gets out of here?"
"By the time I'm willing to release him all he will need to do is take it easy for a few more days."
"Thanks doc. Dana you need anything you know my number. I'm off to notify the lawyers and to have that word with Julius."
